The Legacy of the Kelly House

The Colonial-style Kelly House has been a point of pride for residents of the Philadelphia neighborhood of East Falls for decades. The stately brick home was built around the time of Princess Grace’s birth in 1928 and sits on 69 acres of land with garden areas. Now, though, Philadelphians have another reason for celebration: the home is back in the hands of the family who made it famous. With his acquisition of the home in 2016, Prince Albert II of Monaco has endeavored to recreate the warm environment where both he and his mother, Princess Grace, made beautiful memories throughout their lives. In an interview with People in 2018, Prince Albert stated “The house was very beautiful and very special to our family”. If the walls of the Kelly house could talk, they’d have quite the story to tell.

The house was built by Grace’s father, John B. Kelly, a prominent Philadelphian businessman (maybe you’ve heard of Kelly for Brickwork?), politician and three-time Olympic gold-medalist in rowing. Grace literally grew up in the house that her father built with her siblings Peggy, John Jr. (or Kell), and Lizanne before moving to New York to pursue her acting career. The house, with its many nooks and crannies, provided a refuge for the quiet Grace, who sometimes needed a break from her boisterous family. Once her sister Lizanne locked her in an upstairs closet as a prank, but Grace stayed in there for hours, contentedly playing with her dolls–she was probably pleased with the peace and quiet! The house continued to play a prominent role in Grace's life as her fame grew. The fever pitch of its notoriety was when Prince Rainier III visited the home in 1956 and announced his and Grace’s proposal, with film crews on hand to capture the momentous day. The formal dining room where this moment was captured was truly fit for a Prince (and future Princess)! Even after moving to Monaco, Princess Grace made it a point to return to Philadelphia and bring her children to the place she grew up. In an interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today Show , Prince Albert fondly recalls trips to the Kelly House because they meant that he didn’t have to share a room with his sisters–a big thrill when he was young, a sentiment which many of us can surely empathize with.

However, after Princess Grace’s family sold the home in 1973, it was purchased by a lady named Marjorie Bamont who lived there for more than 40 years and the home sadly fell into disrepair. When it was put back on the market in 2016, Prince Albert II knew he had a chance to obtain a crucial piece of his mother’s legacy and submitted the winning bid for the property. Owning the home was exciting, but this was only the first step; he had big plans to restore the home to its former glory.

Prince Albert II wanted to recreate the house how he–and his mother–had known it. He worked with designers and family members, poring over old photographs of the home's interior and tracking down original furniture pieces when possible. Some of the house’s most unique features had stayed miraculously intact even as it passed among multiple owners. One upstairs linen closet door was used to document the heights of the Kelly children each year, including Grace’s beginning in 1931 when she was two years old. This door was never painted over and the marks remained. Some other memorable features were lovingly recreated, such as the in-home bar with a rowing theme, a reference to John B. Kelly’s and Kell's prowess in the sport.

There were a lot of possibilities for this restored property; there was talk of making it a museum, and it surely would have attracted Princess Grace fans from all across the globe. However, Prince Albert II opted for a more private option, using the house as a residence for his family when they visit the United States, as well as office space for the Prince Albert II Foundation. . Princess Grace often fretted about her children’s privacy in the inevitable paparazzi spotlight, and it is clear that this value of privacy was instilled in her children as well. However, with the clamoring of much popular demand, when the renovations were completed in 2018, Prince Albert II gave the Today Show an exclusive tour of the house, giving the country a window into part of his family history. This piece included a 3-D tour of the upstairs of the house, which includes Princess Grace’s childhood bedroom.

Though it may be a private residence, the Kelly House still has a prominent place in Philadelphia history. A historical plaque outside broadcasts its significance to all who pass, and travel guides for the region note the walking and biking trails that offer the best views of the well-known house. True to his philanthropic spirit, Prince Albert II has opened the house up to local causes. In 2021, a Philadelphia animal shelter filmed a piece there that was used as part of the annual Broadway Barks benefit, an event that raises awareness of adoptable shelter pets across the country. Prince Albert II told Today that preserving the house was important because “it’s a big part of our family’s history.” With the restoration efforts, the Kelly family can keep the spirit and passions of Princess Grace alive for generations to come.

Kelly House in its many guises has been home to the Kelly family for over 900 years and reflects the lives of a Devon Squirearchy.

The present house was developed around a medieval hall which was extended through the 16th and 17th-centuries. In 1742 Arthur Kelly was prosperous and confident enough to add the present elegant Georgian house with its fine view.

Dogs on leads are welcome. Over 50 plants are labelled.

Poison in the Garden Every Sunday & Monday between April 1st till July 1st. 10.30-4.30pm

Poison in the Garden: £5 per adult; children under 14 free. No pre-booking required. Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Tours are available for groups of 10-25 for Poison in the Garden. There are over 50 poisonous plants listed in the garden, and still more to discover.

A tour generally takes about an hour and consists of the exterior and ground floor of the house, and contains detail of the history of the buildings and the family. Should your members have an interest in any particular aspect please let us know and we will see what information we have available.

We can manage a maximum of 25 people on a tour. Should your numbers exceed this we would need to split the group in two.

We have limited facilities for disabled people. We have ramps available for access to the ground floor of the house, and the tea room, which also has a large threshold on its approach. We have no auditory or visual aids at present. Particular dietary needs could be met with prior notice.

£20 per person, with a minimum fee of £200. This would include a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits. Other refreshment could be provided if required at an additional cost.

We are situated in the parish of Kelly, some 4 miles south of the A30 dual carriageway close to Devon’s western border with Cornwall, near Lifton. Our website has detailed directions from Exeter and Cornwall via the A30

Hey, come on in. We’re at my home in Beverly Hills, California. It was purchased from the Broccoli family who created James Bond, so the house has so much incredible Hollywood history. This is the entrance vestibule. I love this mirror, because it looks like chewing gum. This is actually an exhaust pipe. My favorite window in the house. A gift from one of my favorite artists, Katie Stout. Cabinet by Belgian artist Patrick Schols. The kitchen. Our fridge wallpapered with family photos. My espresso machine and my backup for when this one becomes problematic. Foster puppy. This room used to be the courtyard. We recreated the railing from photos of the original house from the 1920s. Set out each day in a different direction, and whatever your interests, you will experience new delights. To the East lies Tavistock and Dartmoor, to the West Launceston and its castle, the Tamar Valley with its mining heritage, Bodmin Moor and Jamaica Inn. Cornwall’s dramatic North coast is within easy reach, or to the South the Maritime City of Plymouth, and a softer coast line.

If outdoor activities are your thing there are a wide variety of walks and cycle trails, as well as a climbing barn close by, sailing at Roadford and Siblyback reservoirs, and of course surfing on the North coast of Cornwall.

We have limited facilities for disabled people. the ground is uneven and there are a number of steps in places. We have ramps available for access to the ground floor of the house, and the tea room, which also has a large threshold on its approach. We have no auditory or visual aids at present. We have successfully accommodated visitors in wheelchairs last year, and would be happy to discuss particular points with anyone prior to your visit to see if we are able to provide for their needs. Particular dietary needs could also be met with prior notice.

The Live With Kelly and Ryan cohosts have been living in an extravagant penthouse on the Upper East Side of Manhattan since 2013. The longtime couple purchased the townhouse on East 76th Street for $27 million from fashion mogul Luca Orlandi and his wife, supermodel Oluchi Onweagba .

Kelly and Mark moved into the gorgeous 7,796 square-foot mansion after the TV star pointed out that their former home on Crosby Street in SoHo felt a little crowded. By the time they put the home on the market in 2015, it sold for $20 million, though the original asking price was $24.5 million.

According to the New York Daily News , the house was built in 1882 and features five bedrooms and six bathrooms.

Looking for a change of scenery following her divorce, Kelly Clarkson purchased this stunning Toluca Lake, CA home for $5.4 million in 2021.

Built in 1036, the 4,946 square foot home sits on just over 1-acre of land and offers 5 bedrooms, each with ensuite, and 7 bathrooms.

The great room lives up to its name – providing a plethora of entertainment space, an elegant stone fireplace, and French doors that overlook the backyard.

Not far from the great room, you’ll find the chef’s kitchen with stainless appliances, double ovens, glass-front cabinetry, and a dark wood island with seating.

It seems having plenty of gorgeous dining spaces is priority for Clarkson and fam – in addition to two formal dining rooms, the residence also features a octagonal breakfast nook.

Okay, so prepare to meet the mother of all master suites – not only does this space have a stunning fireplace, but it also offers a sitting area, midnight kitchen, 2 walk-in closets, and an office.

While most celebs typically go all out luxury for their big cabin homes, Kelly and fam had a more rustic vision for their Montana spread – this 1-room cabin!

While there’s no denying the space is a bit lacking on square footage, it seems Clarkson and her family always enjoy their time at the cabin.

At the back of the room, you’ll see Clarkson’s bed as well as two additional cots for her children and a small dining table.

In the front of the cabin, the space offers a bit of extra cozy rustic charm in the form of a wood burning fireplace as well as a small kitchenette.

Blackstock was ordered to pay $81,000 per month in property fees.

Clarkson had reportedly considered selling the ranch following the breakup, but has continued to maintain ownership of the land as of 2023.

Located in Encino, an upscale, celeb-filled neighborhood in San Fernando Valley, Kelly Clarkson paid $8.5 million for this farmhouse-style mansion back in 2018. The custom-built home boasts 8-bedrooms, 11-bathrooms, and 9,839 square feet of living space, which is actually a major downsize from her last pad (you’ll see what we mean here shortly).

The charming abode has tall ceilings as well as wood beams made from reclaimed wood, handcrafted vintage barn doors, and custom blended brick floors. A kitchen spacious enough to facilitate an island is typically what everyone wants, right? Well, it was definitely something miss Clarkson wanted, because she has not just one, but three islands in her kitchen (it’s okay, take a moment to reflect on that, drool over it a bit, we’ll wait).

If you’re feeling envious over the kitchen, however, then the master suite is sure to have you turning an even deeper shade of green, since the spacious sleeping quarters has its own lounge, fireplace, patio space, and even a walk-in closet with – get this – two freakin’ built-in islands!

Update: Kelly listed this home in May 2020 for a staggering $9,995,000 – well over $1M more than she paid. Then, about a month later, in June 2020, we got some context as to why she listed it. She and her husband/manager announced their plans for a divorce.

Located beside Old Hickory Lake on a peaceful cul-de-sac, Clarkson purchased the estate back in 2013 for $2.8 million and completely overhauled the place, adding in lots of custom touches to make it her own.

Kelly Clarkson was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. Growing up, Clarkson was raised Southern Baptist and was even the youth group leader at her local church. Her singing talent was first noticed while she was in 7 th grade at Pauline Hughes Middle School.

A choir teacher by the name of Cynthia Glenn heard Clarkson singing in the hallway of the school and asked her if she would audition for the school’s choir.

HOME TOUR: Kelly Hoppen's private residence

With such an abundance of remarkable design talents in the world, far be it from me to play favorites. But the fact that I'm an admirer of Kelly Hoppen is not one I've ever kept secret. I've never been afraid to tell you she's my girl crush. And recently, I doubled-down on that and revealed to the object of my affection exactly what is in my heart. Yes, when I had the "pinch me I must be dreaming" experience of interviewing the award-winning designer about her soon-to-be-released latest book, Kelly Hoppen's Essential Style Solutions for Every Home, I told Kelly how much I love her. Right to her face.

Having changed the current of the design industry with her singular East Meets West style - defined by a subtle fusion of clean lines and neutral tones intuitively balanced with an opulent warmth - Kelly Hoppen CBE, MBE is one of the most sought-after designers of our generation. Her diverse portfolio includes exclusive commercial properties, private homes and jets, superyachts, and five-star hotels. Kelly's brand partnerships are equally prominent (think Restoration Hardware , de Gournay , Loloey and more if you want to get a feel for the caliber we're talking here.)

But before we examine her passion project, the design of her own home, let's discuss the awards. You see, an Order of the British Empire is arguably the "royal flush" of awards; royal, indeed, as it is endowed by The Queen herself... just like a knighthood. MBE - which stands for Member of the Order of the British Empire - is awarded to someone for making a positive impact in their line of work. It is the third highest ranking Order of the British Empire award. CBE - which stands for Commander of the British Empire - is the highest ranking Order of the British Empire award. It too is given to people to recognize a positive impact they have made through their work.

Kelly Hoppen has received both.

She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2009 for her services to interior design, and in 2020, Hoppen was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her service to the GREAT campaign (the UK’s international brand marketing campaign, which works closely with UK businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and high-profile figures to promote the best of the UK abroad).

Though I've swooned over - and covered - Kelly's work through the years, I was especially jazzed when I got word that she'd done her own home. My great expectations were not only met, but exceeded . And so, it is with pleasure that I bring you "The Auction House," Kelly Hoppen's 9,000 square-foot, 6-bedroom, 6-bathroom private residence in London - a true homage to her extraordinary gift for interior design.

Situated in a residential area in London, the property was a dream of Kelly’s that finally became a reality. The ancient auction house was a blank canvas for the designer. Characteristics of her world-renowned style - an elegant play of material and texture, and her beloved neutral palette of taupe, whites, beiges, and grays complemented by beautiful pops of green, bronze, nickel, and rose gold - were employed throughout the entire project. Each area is as inviting and intriguing as the next, imbued with luxury while staying true to Kelly’s laid back lifestyle. Iconic and vintage furniture can be seen throughout, as well as bespoke pieces designed by Hoppen herself.

Poised atop a sleek set of up-lit stairs, the entrance hall is tastefully accessorized and decorated with flowers and black & white photographs. A round mirror Kelly found at the Les Puces flea market in Paris and an imposing photo of Muhammad Ali are among the items from her private collection that adorn the walls. "The bespoke light in my entrance hall is the result of a discussion with Herve Langlais and Galerie Negropontes at PAD London," says Hoppen. "It is a great addition to the entrance and draws beautiful vertical lines that emphasize the height of the ceiling. The soft curves of the metal around the delicate round paper shades are, to me, the perfect balance."

The driving force behind the seductive living room Kelly designed was her love of hosting large gatherings. Stunning wooden floors laid in a herringbone pattern strike a perfect color tone that took six months' effort to achieve. Wooden arches were added to the impressive pre-existing columns, bringing a sense of monumentality.

The stunning upholstery pieces in the seating area are Kelly's own designs, as are the bespoke bubble lights above them. The golden disk floor lamp is a sculpture called "Ribot" by DeCastelli .

A modernist Le Corbusier armchair demonstrates Hoppen's love of iconic design pieces; she had it upholstered in linen... one of her declared favorite fabrics.

Naturally lit during the day, the character-filled dining room overlooks the living room and kitchen. By night, it is illuminated by a bespoke linear pendant, Kelly's own design. The stone table is an astounding 6 meters (over 19 feet!) in length... a testament to the homeowner's love of entertaining a crowd.

Sleek rotating lacquer shutters give way to a cozy TV room.

The lustrous powder room is watched over by a glass owl that is very special to Kelly; it's been part of her personal art collection for years.

"Grouping objects with a common theme always creates impact," states Hoppen in her new book. She proves it here with a verdant arrangement placed beneath the open staircase.

The master bedroom - designed around everything Kelly dreams of - is sensual, luxurious and breathtaking. Delicate dangling bedside light pendants from Ochre are framed by clever ribbed walls that add symmetry to the room. The sultry chaise longue, designed by Kelly for her e-commerce store, adds to the relaxed ambiance of this sumptuous space.

Her spacious, dreamy walk-in wardrobe is decorated with oversized black & white photographs, a pair of vintage chairs, and two India Mahdavi stools which are utilized as accent tables in this instance.

For her showstopping master bedroom ensuite, Kelly designed a freestanding tub in collaboration with Australian bathware designer Apaiser . Crafted in reclaimed marble and inspired by the petals of a lotus flower, this one-of-a-kind statement piece is placed on an elevated marble platform that's lit from underneath for maximum impact. International contemporary artist and lighting designer Niamh Barry was brought in to design the amazing chandelier; the loops surround the bath in light for a cocoon-like feel.

"Contrary to what many people think, I am by no means allergic to color and I love the extra dimension that cleverly selected accents can bring to a space," says Kelly. This guest bedroom features burnt orange - one of her favorite hues - as well as a life-sized Mickey Mouse - the result of a collab between Hoppen and celebrated French "pop sculpture" house Leblon Delienne .

As strikingly designed as the rest of the house, this guest bedroom is dressed in Kelly Hoppen’s beautiful hospitality range, including her luxurious and sophisticated collection of hotel fabrics in collaboration with the textile brand Richloom .

"Give the connecting areas in your home the same design consideration as any other space," advises Kelly. "Although they are not usually somewhere to linger, they are passed through frequently and this should be a pleasant experience."

Once again collaborating with Apraiser, Kelly designed this marble bathtub, and named it Origami after the Japanese art that inspired it. "I love the Eastern influence and the statement it makes," she says. The ceramic side table is from Sé London .

The downstairs bedroom is embellished with French antiques Kelly obtained on Lillie Road; a chandelier of white plaster and rope from French antique dealer Gwenola Pilard at Quindry, and lacquer bedside tables from Dorian Caffot de Fawe.

Kelly's personal residence is in every way an embodiment of her in-demand style. In this ambitious project, she's brilliantly fused the Eastern principle of simplicity with the Western taste for lush, luxurious finishes and textures. No wonder Kelly feels so at home here. It's so "Hoppen."
