The Khan El Khalili Bazaar – There’s No Market Like It

Khan El Khalili bazaar is located in the Islamic district of Cairo. It is said to be the oldest open air market in the Middle East. No trip to Cairo is complete without a visit to this bazaar, and for this reason, it is included in almost all of our Cairo tour packages .

When people think of Egypt, they typically think of the pyramids and other similar attractions such as the Sphinx, but the truth is, there is so much more to see in this ancient land of the pharaohs. Khan El Khalili is in fact a prime example.

More people visit the bazaar than any other attraction in the country, but this is of course because the bazaar is equally as popular between tourists and locals alike.

A Brief History of Khan El Khalili

Located in the Islamic district of Cairo, Khan El Khalili bazaar was originally built to serve as a mausoleum for the Fatimid royal family, and was at that time a part of the Great Eastern Fatimid Palace which was built in 970 CE.

By the 14th century when the first Mamluk sultan ruled the country, Egypt had been ravaged by the Black Death. Nonetheless, it continued to act as a major trade center, and as a result, several commercial properties were constructed. By 1389 the original Fatimid cemetery had been destroyed in order to make way for a large caravanserai.

The original caravanserai can still be seen at Khan El Khalili to this day although most shoppers have little interest in the colorful history of this charismatic bazaar. Instead, most locals are only interested in securing the best possible deals, in a place where haggling is the order of the day.

Most Egyptian package tours include a tour of Khan El-Khalili bazaar and if not our flexible packages can be tailored to include a guided tour of the bazaar. However, our many years of experience have shown us that many tourists prefer to explore the market by themselves during their stay in Cairo. For this reason, most of our Egypt tour packages include at least a few days in Cairo.

The original bazaar built by El Khalili was demolished and then rebuilt in 1511. The trading hub was built complete with massive gates and several perpendicular streets, in much the same was as many other Ottoman era market places. While the  Khan El Khalili  market was originally built for the sale of luxury goods, vendors selling other wares soon began making an appearance.

Khan El Khalili Bazaar as it Stands Today

The market is famous for clothing, spices, traditional jewelry and perfumes. The items are of high quality which is part of the reason that this market has survived for so long.

The  Khan El Khalili  bazaar is far from being a tourist trap even though there are plenty of souvenirs available. However, many of the high quality clothes; fabrics and other items that are made by local artisans often prove to be the best souvenirs since they are a part of Egyptian culture, and as such, they are bought daily by the countless locals shopping at the bazaar.

A Full Day of True Egyptian Culture

The Khan El Khalili bazaar is a great place to while away an entire day. The sights and sounds are enduring examples of true Egyptian culture that has been thriving for hundreds of years.

For a break from the heat, there are plenty of coffee shops along the street. Egyptians like their coffee strong, so be prepared for quite a jolt from their favored drink, but also prepare for some of the most exotic tasting coffee you’ll ever have. If you do favor a cup or two of quality Arabic coffee, be sure to visit Fishawi’s Coffee Shop. This coffee shop has been open since 1773, making it the oldest coffee shop in all of Egypt.

Understanding the Workings of a Souk

The Khan El-Khalili souq is a great place to enjoy traditional Egyptian crafts, buy souvenirs and bargain with local sellers.

Open air markets such as Khan El Khalili and the other markets in Old Cairo are called a “souk” in Arabic.

You’ll find these types of markets in all Middle Eastern countries, but as already mentioned, the Khan El Khalili Bazaar is one of the oldest; biggest, and certainly most famous of them all.

The tradition of buying and selling, haggling and bargaining among the crowds has being going on for centuries already.

Many tourists often tend to feel somewhat intimidated by the whole process of having to haggle for better prices, but the truth is, once you become accustomed to it, it can be a really fun experience.

Bargaining and haggling is more than just a consumer activity in Egypt. It’s a great way to socialize and meet new people, keeping in mind that haggling is always done in a good natured way with plenty of smiling and laughing.

Top 10 Tips for Shopping in Khan El Khalili

If you are planning a trip to Egypt , a tour of the Khan El Khalili Bazaar is a must. This open-air shopping market has been in operation for centuries, since the 1300s! Once you step inside, you can find everything from basic groceries to simple souvenirs to pricey Egyptian silver and more. Shopping in Khan El Khalili is definitely an adventure, and it connects you to millions of people who’ve done the same for centuries before you.

Here are 10 tips from the ages that will help you navigate the wheeling and dealing that goes on in the Khan El Khalili Bazaar.

1. Haggling is expected and encouraged

Haggling the price is expected, so everything you see in the Khan El Khalili bazaar is marked up. Nothing will be priced at what it is worth, because the seller expects you to bargain. So go in ready to spend some time scoring great deals. The key is to keep a smile on your face and have a good sense of humor. Start with the lowest offer you have in mind, and work up from there. A good rule of thumb is to aim to pay no more than one third the listed price. And don’t be afraid to walk away – many vendors will go lower when you return later.

2. Take cash with you

Most of the shops in the Khan El Khalili bazaar are just stalls set up by craftsmen or local farmers, or similar people. They don’t often have the ability to take cards. It’s a very good idea to have cash on you. While getting Egyptian pounds is a good idea for saving some money (because prices will be rounded up to accommodate dollars or euros), you don’t have to. The stalls do accept all forms of currency.

3. Try to avoid going inside a shop, unless you’re after something specific

A common tactic for vendors is to convince you to enter their shop instead of just browsing outside, where they are better able to pressure you into purchases. If you don’t see what you want outside, keep moving – chances are you’ll find it just a few shops down.

4. Keep in mind that tourist souvenirs are usually made in China

If you want an authentic Egyptian product, you’ll need to shop in areas where tourists don’t flock. Many, if not most, of the souvenir items you’ll find in the Khan El Khalili bazaar are made in China. Think of this as a really fun experience, a place to find some amazing street food, and a place to see Cairo culture, and you’ll have an awesome time.

5. Walk away from the Khan El Khalili bazaar to get a taxi

If you need to taxi away from the Khan El Khalili bazaar after shopping, don’t hail a taxi right outside. The taxis know that tourists are looking for rides, and will often charge more to those they pick up from right outside the marketplace. Walk a bit away, and then hail a cab. This will save you money so you can bargain some more in other stores.

6. Don’t skip a break at one of the coffee shops in the bazaar!

Inside Khan El Khalili, you’ll find dozens of coffee shops that offer a break from the haggling. This is an absolute must. It’s a tradition in Egypt, the same way tea time is in England, to enjoy a delicious coffee during a break. You’ll get the best people watching in the world as you enjoy tasty drinks and some pretty good food, too. This is really the moment where you’ll feel immersed in the culture of the bazaar, so don’t skip this.

7.   Know what you want to make the most of your time

The Khan El Khalili Bazaar is divided into districts, and each district is for a specific type of ware or good. For example, spices are sold in one district, carpets in another. Copper is in a different district from silver, and antiques are in a different district from scarves. You can find everything in the bazaar – perfume, stained glass, handmade clothing, shoes, ancient artifacts, gold, and just about anything else you can name.

If you want to just walk in and wander, you can, but it would take days to explore it all. If you want something specific, head to the right district.

8. Plan your trip around a carnival or cultural event

If you’ve been to the bazaar before and want a new experience, plan your trip around a local celebration. There are carnivals in Muizz Street, tannoura dances that take place at Wekalet El-Ghouri, and many traditional Sufi celebrations that occur during Mawlid Al-Hussein. This will make the Khan El Khalili bazaar an exciting place with even more energy than usual. You’ll have the chance to see some of Egypt’s current culture, as well as ancient celebratory rites that will amaze.

9. Eat Hamam Mahshy at Farahat

If there’s one place in the Khan El Khalili bazaar that visitors must not skip, it’s Farahat Restaurant. They are known for the famous dish, hamam mahshy, or stuffed pigeon. This dish is found all over Egypt, but it’s considered the best right here. You can get a meal for about nine U.S. dollars, so go ahead and indulge in this must-see during your day of bargaining and sight-seeing.

10. Make a plan for your experience in the market

The Khan El Khalili bazaar is a huge area, with multiple streets and districts, and it could take days to see it all. Many people want to know just how long they should expect to be in the market, and to that, the only answer is: as long as you want! If you expected to enjoy a small side trip of souvenir shopping, think again. To avoid getting caught up spending way more time than you wanted to, it’s best to have a plan. Give yourself a time limit and start heading out of the bazaar when you want to move on.

This is one of the most amazing attractions in Cairo , partly because of the many things you can buy, partly because of the cool buying experience, and partly because you’re connecting to an ancient tradition!

Khan El Khalili – The Complete Guide to Egypt’s Most Famous Bazaar

When khan el khalili was built and who built it.

Established in the 14th century, the Khan El-Khalili market in Cairo has been always an important spot for cultural and economic activity.

Built by Emir Dajaharks Al-Khalili to be a large market complex on the site of the Za’afran Tomb, which is the burial place of the Fatimid rulers of Egypt. This building was part of the process of reconstruction started under Sultan Barquq (ruled 1382-1399) to help the city recover from the devastating ravages of the Black Death throughout the 13th and 14th centuries.

Today the market has been modernized remarkably, but there are still portions of the old construction that display the original Mamluk style architecture, which featured great archways and vaulted ceilings. The market has several restaurants and cafés spread throughout where you can take a break from shopping.

Khan el-Khalili

khan el khalili tours

Are you looking for a historical and cultural experience in Cairo? Look no further than Khan El Khalili Street! This old market has been around since the 14th century and is filled with shops, restaurants, and more. Here’s what you need to know about this unique destination.

Khan el-Khalili (Arabic: خان الخليلي) is a famous bazaar and souq (or souk) in the historic center of Cairo, Egypt. Established as a center of trade in the Mamluk era and named for one of its several historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has since become one of Cairo’s main attractions for tourists and Egyptians alike. It is also home to many Egyptian artisans and workshops involved in the production of traditional crafts and souvenirs. The name Khan el-Khalili historically referred to a single building in the area; today it refers to the entire shopping district.

The site of Khan el-Khalili in Fatimid times (10th-12th centuries)

Cairo was originally founded in 969 CE as a capital for the Fatimid Caliphate, an empire which by then covered much of North Africa and parts of the Levant and the Hijaz. Jawhar Al-Siqilli, the general who conquered Egypt for the Fatimids, was ordered to construct a great palace complex to house the caliphs, their household, and the state’s institutions. Two palaces were eventually completed: an eastern one (the largest of the two) and a western one, between which was a plaza known as Bayn al-Qasrayn (“Between the Two Palaces”). The site of Khan el-Khalili today was originally the southern end of the eastern Fatimid palace as well as the location of the burial site of the Fatimid caliphs: a mausoleum known as Turbat az-Za’faraan (“the Saffron Tomb”).57  Also located here was a lesser palace known as al-Qasr al-Nafi’i (today the site of the 19th-century Wikala of Sulayman Agha al-Silahdar).

Under the Fatimids, Cairo was a palace-city which was closed to the common people and inhabited only by the Caliph’s family, state officials, army regiments, and other people necessary to the operation of the regime and its city. The first attempts to open the city to merchants and other outsiders took place in the later Fatimid period, on the initiative of powerful viziers. Between 1087 and 1092, Badr al-Gamali, the vizier under Caliph al-Mustansir, undertook the task of enlarging the city and building the stone walls and gates that still partly exist today. At the same time, he also opened the city to the common people, but the decision was quickly reversed. Between 1121 and 1125, al-Ma’mun al-Bata’ihi, vizier under Caliph al-Amir, undertook many reforms and construction projects, including the creation of a mint, known as the Dar al-Darb, and of a customs house for foreign merchants, known as the Dar al-Wikala. These were placed in a central location not far from the current site of the Madrasa of al-Ashraf Barsbay (15th century). This introduced foreign trade into the heart of the city for the first time.: 199 (vol. II)

Development of Cairo as economic center (12th-14th centuries)

Cairo was only definitively opened to all people under the rule of Salah ad-Din (Saladin), who dismantled the Fatimid Caliphate in 1171 and embarked on the construction of a new fortified Citadel further south, outside the walled city, which would house Egypt’s rulers and state administration. The old Fatimid palaces in the city were opened up to redevelopment. This ended Cairo’s status as an exclusive palace-city and started a process by which the city became an economic center inhabited by everyday Egyptians and frequented by foreign travelers. At the same time, the nearby port city and former capital of Fustat, until then the economic hub of Egypt, was in a slow decline, further paving the way for Cairo’s ascendance The main axis of Cairo was the central north-to-south street known as the Qasaba (now known as al-Muizz Street), which ran between the gates of Bab al-Futuh and Bab Zuweila and passed through Bayn al-Qasrayn. Under the Ayyubids and the later Mamluks, this avenue became a privileged site for the construction of religious complexes, royal mausoleums, and commercial establishments. These constructions were usually sponsored by the sultan or members of the ruling class. This is also where the major souqs of Cairo developed, forming its main economic zone for international trade and commercial activity thereafter

An important factor in the development of Cairo’s economic center was the growing number of waqf institutions, especially during the Mamluk period. Waqfs were charitable trusts under Islamic law which set out the function, operations, and funding sources of the many religious/civic establishments built by the ruling elite. Funding sources often included the revenues of designated shops or other commercial establishments. Among the early and important examples of this institution in Cairo’s center was the complex of Sultan Qalawun, built in 1284–85, which included a madrasa, hospital, and mausoleum. A part of the complex’s revenues came from a qaysariyya (a bazaar or market complex made up of rows of shops) that was built in front of the nearby Ayyubid-era madrasa of al-Salih. This qaysariyya was a prominent early example of the purpose-built commercial structures that came to be erected in Cairo under the Mamluks as part of a waqf. Qalawun’s qaysariyya had a front on the Qasaba street while some of its shops were reached by an inner alley off the main street.

Present day

The Khan el-Khalili today is occupied by local merchants and traders and is significantly geared towards tourists. Shops typically sell souvenirs, antiques and jewelry. The adjoining goldsmiths’ souq is still important for locals. 81  Although less widespread than in earlier days, many crafts workshops continue to operate within the bazaar (usually in the courtyards or upper floors of buildings) and in the surrounding districts, manufacturing some of the products sold here or exported elsewhere.

In addition to shops, there are several coffeehouses (Arabic: مقهى, romanized: maqha), restaurants, and street food vendors distributed throughout the market. The coffeeshops are generally small and quite traditional, serving Arabic coffee and usually offering shisha. One of the oldest and most famous coffeehouses is El Fishawi’s, established in 1773. 109

Midan al-Hussein and al-Hussein Mosque, on the eastern edge of Khan el-Khalili The Khan al-Khalili proper is delimited by al-Muizz Street to the west, al-Muski Street to the south, and the Mosque/shrine of al-Hussein to the east, with its northern boundary less clear. In reality though, the bazaar area spreads beyond these limits and is closely integrated into the surrounding districts.[8] For example, al-Muski street, which runs perpendicular to al-Muizz street and cuts across the south end of Khan al-Khalili, continues over a long distance and functions as a major souq street frequented by locals for much of its length.

In addition to the important Mosque and shrine of al-Hussein, Al-Azhar University and the Al-Azhar Mosque are also nearby. The monumental area of Bayn al-Qasrayn is also just northwest of the district. Some of its historic Islamic buildings were once maintained with the help of revenues from designated shops and commercial buildings in the area

Khan el-Khalili

Originally built on the site of an old mausoleum, local and foreign merchants have been trading at Khan el-Khalili souk since the 14th century. It is Egypt's most famous market.

Located in the heart of Islamic Cairo, near the Medieval walled city of the Saladin Citadel , the Khan el-Khalili market was built on the old burial site of the Fatimid Caliphs , who founded Cairo in the 10th century. Trading in the souk dates from the 14th century, but its elaborately-carved monumental gates and grid-like alleyways were constructed in the 16th century under Egypt's last powerful Mamluk ruler.

While the souk is no longer strictly divided into specific trading areas, the gold merchants, coppersmiths', and spice vendors' districts remain quite distinct. Throughout the rest of the bazaar, stalls are full of  colourful lanterns, candles, jewellery, perfumes, musical instruments and other handicrafts  - you can pretty much find anything you could possibly want within its walls!

This is a great place to shop for souvenirs - most vendors speak some English and you can try out your haggling skills and a few words of Arabic (see our  General Information on travelling to Egypt for tips)! Even if you don't want to buy anything, the market is an incredible place to walk through and experience the craziness of daily life in Cairo . Most stalls are open from around 9 am until well after nightfall - although some may be closed on Friday mornings and Sundays.

Eating & drinking

After tiring yourself out exploring the shops and stalls, you won't need to go far for a well-earned break. The souk is also home to a number of restaurants, street food vendors and small but very traditional coffeehouses - called maqha in Arabic . Frequented by locals and tourists alike, here you can sit down and enjoy an  Arabic coffee  - often brewed with spices like cardamom - or a  karkade , a sweet hibiscus tea, and  smoke shisha  from a  hookah . The most famous, and probably the oldest, of these cafes is  El Fishawi , open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week since opening in the mid-1700s.

A complete contrast to the desert calm of Egypt's ancient monuments, this historic souk is well worth a visit to immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Cairo . Just remember - like the rest of the capital city, it is a labyrinth of chaotically competing sounds, sights and smells - take a deep breath and go for it!

Tracing the Past: Khan el-Khalili Bazaar's Rich History

Khan el-Khalili Bazaar is not just your run-of-the-mill marketplace; it stands as one of the world’s most historically significant sites.

In 1382, Emir Djaharks el-Khalili, who held the prestigious position of Master of the Stables during Sultan Barquq’s reign (1382-1389), embarked on a transformative endeavor. He razed the Fatimid family mausoleum nestled in the heart of the city, replacing it with an expansive khan , also known as a caravansary , which was subsequently named Khan al-Khalili.

Over time, the name expanded to encompass the entire district.

So, what exactly is a caravansary?

It was a vital pitstop along trade routes , serving as an inn and rest house for weary merchants. Typically designed as a square layout , it featured structures enclosing a central courtyard.

The ground level boasted rooms facing the courtyard, serving as storage spaces for trade goods and animal stalls. On the outer side, rooms with openings facing the streets transformed into shops for displaying wares.

Above, the upper level became living quarters for the merchants.

In the 15th century, under the rule of Sultan Qaitbay, Khan el-Khalili flourished as a pivotal foreign trade hub .

Interestingly, the famous novel “Midaq Alley” by Naguib Mahfouz , the 1988 Nobel Prize Winner for Literature, unfolds within one of the bazaar’s evocative alleys.

Mahfouz’s masterpiece vividly portrays the denizens of Midaq Alley in 1940s Cairo, from Zaita the cripple-maker to Kirsha the cafe owner. Their tales, encompassing greed, love, and escape, mirror the alley’s vibrant microcosm on the cusp of modernity.

For those with an adventurous palate, consider trying “hamam mahshy,” a culinary adventure that involves savoring stuffed pigeon.

Should I visit Egypt during Summer?

The high season for tourism is all year with winter and spring being peak season for cultural travels with lots of sightseeing. Weather in Egypt is perfect for many kinds of tourism, and if coming in June, July, and August, head for the seaside resorts. Those months are very warm with temperatures that can reach around 45C. and the humidity is about 70 to 80%, but it is bearable with the sea and large swimming pools nearby. So the period of the high summer season is also a bit busy as hotels fill up with tourists from all over the world looking for a bargain, lots of sunshine, diving, snorkeling, etc. It is also a primary vacation time in Europe. If you come in the deep summer season you can still enjoy it because you can always sightsee early in the morning and go again at night when the sunsets. What is the dress code in Egypt?

Egypt is a Muslim country and the dress code is towards the conservative side, especially for women. That being said, we are used to seeing travelers from all over the world. My suggestion would be to wear light clothes and not to wear short shorts, short skirts and alike to avoid the occasional unwanted stare. But it's really up to you. When you visit religious places (synagogues, churches, and mosques) you do need to cover your shoulders and wear over the knee dresses, if you are planning to wear one of course. If you plan to attend the Nile dinner cruise, there is no need for formal wear unless you want to make that night a special night! Also, you will be sharing this experience with other travelers so you can dress however you feel most comfortable.

What is the best Nile River cruise?

There are many Nile cruises. Not to name one but your choice depends on many things to put in mind such as the number of nights you want to spend on the cruiser, your budget, and the standard of the Nile cruise. We recommend you choose a 5-star luxury Nile cruise, and if you are looking for a private Nile River cruise you can choose Dahabiya cruises, it is only for the small-group tour, about 15 people. Most cruises have. There is another way of cruising the Nile, which is the Felucca boat. It is traditional and charming but it is cheap as long as it will be ok to sleep on the deck exposed to mosquitos and most of these boats do not have a toilet

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
