We continue to move through a congested darts season and the next tournament on the agenda is the European Championship in Dortmund. We’ve taken a look at this one and given you our predictions for the event.

History, Location and Format

The 2023 European Championship is the 16th running of this event and is held at the Westfalenhallen in Dortmund, Germany, between the 26th and 29th October. The event was originally devised as a way of getting the top 32 from the European Tour events to all compete at the same time against one another.

The original 2008 tournament was held in Frankfurt and has since been held in Germany 11 times, Belgium three times, with one appearance each in the Netherlands and Austria.

All four hostings of the European Championship were, of course, won by the GOAT, Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and other multiple champions include Michael van Gerwyn (four times) and Rob Cross (twice).

The defending champion is Englishman Ross Smith, who defeated Michael Smith 11-8 in the 2022 final, for his first major televised title.

There are 32 players taking part in the event, with the top 32 in the European Tour Order of Merit prize money qualifying, from the 13 European Tour events over the season.  The draw bracket is fixed, with the #1 seed Dave Chisnall playing #32 seed Chris Dobey and so on.

First round matches are played over a bet of 11 legs, climbing all the way to best of 21 in the final.

There is no more in-form player in the darting world right now than Luke Humphries.

The 28-year-old Englishman has long been seen as a stellar talent on the tour but has struggled to carry over those performances on to the televised events.

That all changed for the former youth World Champion at the recent World Grand Prix, where ‘Cool-Hand’ Luke finally got over the line, with a brilliant 5-2 win over Gerwyn Price.

That victory was no fluke and you get the feeling it’s only a matter of time before Humphries starts winning the big events regularly. His consistency has been brilliant over the last couple of years, regularly making the semi-finals of televised tournaments and I think he can go back-to-back here in Dortmund.

Talking of Germany, one man who simply loves it here is England’s Rob Cross, who is a two-time winner of this very event.

The 2018 World Champion has had an up and down few years but is on the up again and had his last major win in this very event back in 2021.

The World number nine showed his form at the Masters, where he reached the final and ‘Voltage’ also made the quarter-finals at three other major events this season.

Cross picked up his first win of the season at the European Darts Grand Prix back in May, which was again held in Germany. Perhaps it’s something in the water here?

Seeded five in the order of merit, Cross looks to have a favourable draw and if he can get past Gerwyn Price in the quarter-finals, who knows?

Luke Littler already possesses an aura and stage presence that gives him a leg or two head start against most players - but not Michael Smith.

Bully Boy has won three of their four meetings so far this season and this could possibly be another ideal time to face the Premier League table-topper.

Littler did average 107 in a stunning semi-final win over Luke Humphries in Birmingham but that was the only time he surpassed three figures in his last 10 matches in all competitions, while he's 'only' managed it twice in 15 games.

This isn't to say he's on a bad run by any means, but these aren't the same astronomical levels he was producing regularly in March and if Smith brings a high level to Rotterdam, then we could see a very minor upset.

The St Helens ace also boasts a higher 180 per leg ratio than Littler this season so I'll back him to complete an opening match double.

Gerwyn Price is making the 'averages are just a guide' motto look truer than ever as he continues to slip further behind the top four despite boasting the second highest seasonal average.

The Iceman's 103.26 average against Michael Smith last week wasn't enough to prevent a 6-3 quarter-final defeat and he's now eight points behind fourth-placed Nathan Aspinall.

With just five rounds before the play-offs, Price is quickly running out of time to keep his title hopes alive and will need to win at least two of the remaining nights just to stand a chance.

Statistically he's been performing well, but a mixture of catching opponents at the wrong time and lacking the killer instinct at the key moments has cost him dear. In fact three of his five defeats in this competition have come in deciding legs.

His average of 115.74 against Ricardo Pietreczko en route to a European Tour final at the weekend served as a reminder of the kind of levels he can produce and I'll back him to get the better of Rob Cross.

What Voltage is lacking in unstoppable firepower he makes up with in consistency but another mid to high 90s performance must be pounced upon by a desperate Price.

Verdict : 3-6

Peter Wright's play-off hopes have long gone but he'll surely feel some motivation to get some more points on the board and make the campaign look a little less embarrassing.

Snakebite's objective from this forlorn position has to get into double figures and he will view this match with Nathan Aspinall as one of his most 'winnable' opportunities in the remaining five weeks of the regular season.

Their seasonal averages aren't too dissimilar and although The Asp did register a mammoth average of 113.14 on the European Tour at the weekend, his results have generally been down to his grit and battling qualities rather than high octane performances.

Wright has lacked those attributes but the 109 average he produced in defeat to Gerwyn Price a fortnight ago was the peak point of his general improvement over the past month or so and he can push Aspinall close in a hard-fought encounter.

Verdict : 6-5

Michael van Gerwen got his Premier League campaign back on track in Birmingham with his first nightly success since week four but the home fans in Rotterdam won't be too happy with the fixture list on Thursday night.

Luke Humphries has won their last two meetings - including that astounding 8-1 battering in a European Tour final in March - and Cool Hand seems confident against any opponent right now as long as it isn't Luke Littler.

But it could be worse. Humphries isn't quite operating at the same levels from earlier in the campaign and he's only averaged 100+ in two of his last 15 matches in all competitions and in none of this last eight. Even in the Premier League - where he's averaging 101.59 for the season - he's failed to register three figures in any of his last four matches across the last three weeks and he's only picked up one win during that time.

MVG's success in Birmingham wasn't exactly explosive and he was fortunate to catch Nathan Aspinall, Michael Smith and Luke Littler on 'off days' as far as their matches were concerned.

The Dutchman hasn't averaged over 100 in any of his last seven games and in his last 15, he's managed it three times. So neither player is coming into this at their best.

So with this in mind, I'm going for Humphries to battle his way through and also fire in the most maximums given his far superior maximum per leg rate this year.

TV GUIDE: Here's how to watch 2024 European Darts Grand Prix live

From Friday April 19 to Sunday April 21, the action descends on a European Tour staple of Sindelfingen for the European Darts Grand Prix . The fourth Euro Tour tournament of the year will be broadcast by PDC TV as well as DAZN and Viaplay outside of the UK.

As usual with Euro Tour tournaments, the European Darts Grand Prix consists of three tournament days. The afternoon sessions start at 12 p.m., while the evening sessions start at 6 p.m.

The first round will take place on Friday, while the top-16 seeded players will enter for the second round on Saturday. The third round will be played on Sunday afternoon, followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and final on Sunday night.

German Darts Championship Preview, Dates and Predictions 2023

The 2023 German Darts Championship is the final event on this season’s PDC European Tour. It’s the last opportunity for someone to grab a title and this year’s edition returns to Hildesheim at Halle 39. The tournament will be played from October 13th-15th.

The 13 European Tour events serve as qualifiers for the European Championships. The top 32 players on the Order of Merit, which is based on the prize money earned from the European Tour events, go forward to the next edition of the European Championships at the end of the month.

So there is some big ranking money up for grabs and some added pressure on those players who need to go deep in this draw to try to reach those European Championships.

Defending Champion Michael Van Gerwen will naturally be in the leading pack of contenders, along with recent World Grand Prix Darts title-winner Luke Humphries who has reached six European Tour Finals this season.

Other major names in the field include Michael Smith, Gerwyn Price, Jonny Clayton, Peter Wright and Dave Chisnall all of whom have won European Tour event titles this season. Martin Schindler is the highest-ranked German player in the field.

The first four rounds of the tournament are the best of 11 legs, while the semi-finals go up to the best of 13 and the Final is a best-of-15 fixture.

2023 German Darts Championship Draw & Prize Money

The PDC European Tour events are fast-paced tournaments, squeezed into three days of action. So punters will have plenty of darts betting odds and predictions to pour over as the tournament marches on.

Following the standard format, there will be 48 players taking part in this PDC European Tour event – 16 seeds and 32 qualifiers. 32 players fight it out in the First Round, with the winners of those matches moving ahead to face one of the Top 16 seeds in the Second Round.

So there are no potential clashes between seeded players until the Third Round.

The 2023 German Darts Championship winner collects £30,000 on the night, out of the overall prize pot of £175,000.

Reigning champion

The defending champion is Michael van Gerwen who beat Rob Cross 8-5 in last year’s German Darts Championship final. MVG enjoyed fairly smooth progress throughout the field, helped by a walkover in a scheduled quarter-final against Peter Wright. Van Gerwen beat Dimitri Van den Bergh in the semis before claiming the title against Cross. It was the Dutchman’s third German Darts Championship title.

Van Gerwen has won four PDC European Championship titles during his illustrious career and has already done more than enough this season to get to qualify for the next edition. His one title on this season’s European Tour came at the Belgian Darts Open in early May.

About the German Darts Championship

The German Darts Championship was inaugurated in 2007 and was pulled after just three editions. It returned in 2012 as a tournament on the PDC European Tour and the first edition of the renewed event was won by legend Phil Taylor who beat Dave Chisnall in Berlin.

The tournament then moved to Hildesheim in 2013 where it has remained for a decade. No other player besides Michael van Gerwen and the retired Phil Taylor has managed to win the German Darts Championship on more than one occasion.

Peter Wright, Dave Chisnall and Gary Anderson have all reached two Finals, each winning one and losing one of their respective appearances.

Ich werde weiter weinen, aber diese Trophäe ist meine», schrieb Schindler in der Nacht zum Montag nach seinem 8:5-Finalsieg über den Waliser Gerwyn Price auf Instagram. Der Erfolg von Riesa war für den 27-Jährigen der erste Titel auf der PDC-Tour - und dann gleich auf der European Tour, die medial immer größere Beachtung bekommt.

Schindler hat sich mit dem Coup auch an Landsmann Gabriel Clemens vorbeigeschoben und ist nun die deutsche Nummer eins. «Ich wollte immer einer der besten Darts-Spieler der Welt werden. Und wenn du auf der European Tour einen Titel gewinnst, bist du einer der besten Spieler der Welt», sagte Schindler, der nun in der Weltrangliste als Nummer 22 direkt vor Clemens (23.) steht.

Noch auf der Bühne von Riesa war «The Wall», wie Schindler genannt wird, in Tränen ausgebrochen. Mit dem Pokal in der Hand kauerte er nach der Siegerehrung in der Ecke. Schindler war völlig überwältigt.

Price stichelt

Ex-Weltmeister Price nannte Schindler zwar einen fantastischen Spieler, konnte sich aber eine Spitze in Richtung des Titelgewinners nicht verkneifen. «Ich bin niedergeschlagen, dass ich verloren habe. Aber ich denke, wenn dieses Spiel in Wales stattgefunden hätte, hätte ich gewonnen», sagte der «Iceman», der früher Rugby-Profi war. Noch während Schindler seinerseits über den Premierentitel sprach, verließ Price die Bühne.

Der in Hessen lebende Schindler ist nach Max Hopp (2018) und Ricardo Pietreczko (2023) der dritte Deutsche, der ein Event auf der European Tour gewonnen hat. «Es ist so brutal. Ich spiele die Tour seit etwa siebeneinhalb Jahren. Ich habe einen geilen Pokal», sagte Schindler. «Das hätte ich mir nicht erträumen lassen. Aber ich habe viel dafür gearbeitet.»

U 1 und U 3

Bis 25. April, jeweils sonntags bis donnerstags ab 22 Uhr Wegen Sanierungsarbeiten sind die Linien U1 und U3 nicht wie gewohnt unterwegs. Bis 21. April entfällt der Halt in Berlin-Wannsee für alle Züge der Linie RE1. Des Weiteren werden in der Nacht 20./21. April 2024 einige Züge zwischen Berlin-Charlottenburg und Werder (Havel) umgeleitet. Die Halte Berlin-Wannsee, Potsdam Hbf, Potsdam Charlottenhof und Potsdam Park Sanssouci entfallen für diese Züge. ... bis 26. April Die Züge des RE1 auf der Verbindung Brandenburg Hbf in Richtung Frankfurt (Oder) mit allen Zwischenhalten entfallen im Abschnitt zwischen Berlin-Charlottenburg und Berlin Ostkreuz. ... Bis 05. Mai entfallen einzelne Züge zwischen Cottbus Hauptbahnhof, Eisenhüttenstadt und Frankfurt (Oder). Darts - strausberger martin schindler holt überraschenden titel auf der european tour.

Der deutsche Darts-Profi Martin Schindler hat überraschend einen Titel auf der European Tour erobert. Der Strausberger besiegte am Sonntagabend in Riesa im Finale Favorit Gerwyn Price aus Wales mit 8:5 und sicherte sich seinen ersten PDC-Titel.

Schindler ist nach Max Hopp und Ricardo Pietreczko erst der dritte Deutsche, der ein Turnier auf der European Tour gewinnen konnte. Mit dem Sieg übernimmt Schindler den Platz als deutsche Nummer eins vom früheren WM-Halbfinalisten Gabriel Clemens.

Angefeuert vom sächsischen Publikum kämpfte Schindler sich im Finale nach 0:2-Rückstand zurück und zog am "Iceman" vorbei. Unter anderem gelang ihm beim Stand von 6:4 ein Zehn-Darter. Nach dem verwandelten Matchdart brach der "The Wall", wie Schindler genannt wird, in Tränen aus und sank auf die Knie. In der Weltrangliste stieß Schindler auf Rang 22 vor, unmittelbar dahinter liegt Clemens.

Auf dem Weg ins Endspiel hatte der 27-Jährige im Halbfinale den Engländer Chris Dobey 7:3 besiegt. Eine Runde zuvor überstand er beim 6:5 gegen Danny Noppert (Niederlande) einen Matchdart. Für den Turniersieg erhielt Schindler 30.000 Pfund (rund 35.000 Euro) Preisgeld.
