Note: Duty/VAT/tax is not included in any international shipping charges. Customers outside of the U.S. are responsible to pay their country's duty/VAT/tax at time of FedEx delivery.

RETURN POLICY

We accept returns or exchanges if you are not satisfied with your order. Please read below for rules, exceptions and miscellaneous information.

• Call Lightravels ® , LLC within 7 days from receipt of your order to obtain our Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA), along with shipping instructions. Unauthorized returns will be refused.
• Freight charges will not be refunded.
• Custom orders may not be refunded, returned or exchanged.
• You are responsible for return freight and insurance. We strongly recommend that you ship via UPS or FedEx and please insure your return, as we are not responsible for return shipping damages or loss.
• NOTE: If you removed the shrink wrap from around the map, you must add bubble wrap in it's place, in order to protect the front of the map and frame. Be sure to fully protect the front of map!
• Products must arrive in brand new condition and must not have any punched holes in the map from the light pegs or any other object.

Upon receipt of the returned product we will:

Send out the item for exchange or issue a refund, less the shipping charges. All refunds will be paid either by Lightravels ® , LLC check, and mailed to you within 2 weeks from receipt of returned product, or a credit issued on your credit card. There is a 20% restocking fee for returned products, which will be deducted from your refund.

Items received as gifts may be returned for a full store credit, not including the original or return shipping charges.

NOTE: In the event your product was DAMAGED DURING SHIPPING, we will replace your item immediately (upon receipt of your returned, damaged map) at no additional charge to you. Call first please for RMA and shipping instructions! Please note that you are required to properly repackage the map (using all polyfoam corners, both shipping boxes, and if the shrink wrap was opened, then to add bubble wrap all along the front of the map) when returning it. Should the map come back to us with more damage than when you received it, and we determine the cause was due to improper re-packaging on your part, then we will charge 20% - 50% of the map cost to cover the extra damage sustained.

SHIPPING POLICY

SHIPPING COMPANY: Lightravels ® , LLC only ships via FedEx service and will email the customer their tracking number upon shipment.

TRACKING, DELIVERY CONFIRMATION, AND SIGNATURE: It is the customer's responsibility to provide the correct shipping address for their order.    Lightravels ® , LLC does get delivery confirmation from FedEx but does not require a signature.  It is the customer's responsibility to contact Lightravels immediately if they would like to pay additional to require a signature upon delivery.

DAMAGED ITEMS: Lightravels ® , LLC insures your shipment with FedEx and will work directly with FedEx should anything get damaged during transit.  The customer must contact Lightravels within 48 hours of delivery should anything arrive damaged.

LOST ITEMS: Lightravels ® , LLC recommends that the customer tracks the package to know what day the delivery is scheduled.  Lightravels ® , LLC is not responsible for packages that are lost after FedEx has delivered them.  If a package is shown as delivered but is missing, Lightravels recommends the customer checks with family members and neighbors to determine if someone else has the package.  If the customer lives in an apartment, they should also check with their office as the package may have been left there depending on the complex.  If the package shows delivered but is unable to be located by the customer after delivery, then it is the customer's responsibility to work with FedEx on filing a claim. Please note that FedEx insures lost items for the amount of the order, not to exceed $100.00. 

We offer a 6 month limited warranty on our light box components from the date of purchase. Should your map not light up correctly during the 6 months, and it is determined that this was not due to abuse or neglect, we will send you the appropriate replacement parts at no charge. The frame, shadow box and pegs are not included in the warranty, except should you receive your item damaged during shipping. Please see Return Policy above for instructions on damaged goods.

For an additional fee, some products can be delivered next day depending on availability and destination within the contiguous 48 states. Orders received by 6pm (PT) Monday through Thursday will arrive the next business day. Orders placed on Friday after 6pm (PT) through Sunday will arrive on Tuesday.

Eligible items can be exchanged for a refund of the merchandise value within 30 days of receiving an order or seven days for Quick Ship upholstery items. An original receipt or gift receipt is required, our stores will not accept returns or exchanges without a receipt or proof of purchase. We will issue a refund in the form of the original payment or with a gift card. Shipping charges may be applied to your refund amount.

The Earth at Night

The Night Earth map is a fascinating tool that allows us to explore and understand the impact of light pollution on our planet. By providing a visual representation of the Earth's surface at night, the map reveals the areas that are brightly lit and urbanized, as well as those that remain unlit and remote. It showcases the stark contrasts in urbanization and population density around the world, demonstrating how cities tend to concentrate along coastlines and transportation networks.

One of the map's notable features is its ability to highlight the differences between brightness and population density. While certain regions may appear to be the brightest, they may not necessarily be the most heavily populated. The map visually portrays this phenomenon, offering insights into the patterns of human settlement and development.

Moreover, the Night Earth map uncovers the vast expanses of our planet that remain thinly populated and unlit. Antarctica emerges as a completely dark expanse, reminding us of its isolation and otherworldly beauty. Similarly, the interior jungles of Africa and South America, deserts in various parts of the world, and the remote boreal forests of Canada and Russia all exhibit limited illumination, reflecting the challenges faced by people in these regions when it comes to accessing electricity and infrastructure.

In addition to its informational value, the Night Earth map is aesthetically pleasing, allowing us to appreciate the planet's beauty from a unique perspective. It presents a captivating view of Earth's light pollution and serves as a reminder of the complex relationship between human activity, population distribution, and the natural environment.

The Night Map

Two versions of the images are available:

• The main image of the Earth at night (2012) was captured by NASA using the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite. It took over nine days in April 2012 and thirteen days in October 2012, during 312 orbits at 824 kilometers (512 miles) to capture the whole Earth. This satellite uses the “day-night band” of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe dim signals such as gas flares, auroras, wildfires, city lights, and reflected moonlight.
• The original image from 2000 was created by NASA using data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) 's Operational Linescan System (OLS) , originally designed to view clouds by moonlight.

While the original image consisted of 87.970 images, the map from 2012 comprises 349.525 images, therefore adding a grand total of 437.495 images for this map.

Roadmap and day satellite images, obtained from different sources, are also available for reference.

The detailed images of the cities were taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. These have been obtained from the Image Science and Analysis Laboratory, NASA-Johnson Space Center. "The Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth" .

Further information can be obtained from the Earth Observatory article Bright Lights, Big City , and NASA's Visible Earth website.

The 3D map was created using Cesium via OpenLayers and ol-cesium , with extensions from ol-ext . This uses imagery from OpenStreetMap , Thunderforest , Bing Maps , and Mapquest . Geocoding is supported by Nominatim via ol3-geocoder . The GDAL - Geospatial Data Abstraction Library library was used for the conversion of the projection of map images. The Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis (Northern Lights and Southern Lights) data is sourced from NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . The clouds layer is obtained from OpenWeatherMap . Hosting is provided by x10Hosting .

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

Elektrozavodskaya

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!
