Cirque du Soleil Soars Into 2023, Enticing Fans With Thrilling Las Vegas and Disney Springs Performances

In 2023, Cirque du Soleil will continue to uplift audiences worldwide. And who knows? Maybe the performers will inspire guests to break boundaries, scale new heights, and attain personal goals in the New Year.

by BOSS Editorial | Published: January 10, 2023 | Updated: January 10, 2023 7:57 am

cirque du soleil

Breathless with anticipation, the world welcomed 2023 with fireworks, popping corks, and resolutions to have more fun and excitement in the new year. And Cirque du Soleil stands ready at attention to help fulfill that vow — and glide into your heart.

Cirque du Soleil’s world-class performance artists, often touted as the premier Las Vegas performers, delight in providing inspiration to thousands of fans — young and old, newbies and devotees — every year. These exuberant dancers, acrobats, musicians, and artists are pure creativity in motion. They effortlessly shimmer across the stage, through the air, and even under the water. Their brilliantly colored costumes celebrate the joy of movement and self-expression.

Curtain Up: Cirque du Soleil’s Las Vegas Shows Take Center Stage

Few metropolises on the planet glitter as brightly as Las Vegas. And Sin City has traditionally hosted swoon-worthy performance venues that have historically showcased mind-blowing artists and groups. Today, Cirque du Soleil steps into that tradition and steps it up with six wildly popular Las Vegas shows . Each breathtaking performance offers Cirque du Soleil’s trademark blend of high artistry, eclectic costumes, and stunning special effects and music.

Love Me Do : Cirque du Soleil Spins The Beatles

Longtime fans of classic rock kings The Beatles, and new generations yet to discover the Fab Four, will go ga-ga over The Beatles: Love by Cirque du Soleil . This sensory-rich “Magical Mystery Tour” takes place at The Mirage Hotel and Casino’s theater-in-the-round. Cirque du Soleil’s iconic Mop Tops soundtrack, winner of three Grammy Awards, sets a sonic state of mind for an epic adventure to “Strawberry Fields” and an “Octopus’s Garden” that’s been viewed by more than 10 million guests — so far.

In echoes of the psychedelic 1960s, the audience is treated to mind-bending Sgt. Pepper imagery embellished by today’s cutting-edge technology. Multicolored bubbles and electric jellyfish meander across the stage to Beatles’ music. Airborne roller skaters and aerial acrobats effortlessly slide through this 21st-century ode to The Beatles’ timeless tunes.

Cirque du Soleil Takes a Bite Out of the Mad Apple

If New York City is so nice they named it twice, the New York, New York Hotel and Casino in Vegas just may have scored a triple by hosting Cirque du Soleil’s Mad Apple. This high-powered dive into the Big Apple’s eclectic nightlife begins with cocktails served at the classic stage bar. A preperformance magic show primes fans for the main event.

And what an event it is! All the grit, gumption, spectacle, and special sauce of the city that never sleeps without any of the hassle. As the house band rolls out NYC-inspired classics, street performers, acrobats, musicians, and underground stars capture New York City’s earthy vibe. Laughs and gasps abound from the comic quips to the acrobatic flips. Take note: Because of comedy themes and adult language, children under 16 will not be permitted to attend Mad Apple . Attendees 16 to 18 can attend the performance when accompanied by an adult.

Kà at MGM Grand

Enter a world of mystery and warcraft at the MGM Grand’s 360-degree stage, where the sweeping story of Kà manifests in an epic saga of a twin girl and boy on a treacherous trek to uncover their mutual destiny. Each character’s story unfolds separately, involving life, love, and Kà, the essence that melds human lives. However, each twin is also touched by war’s battlefields.

While some of Kà ’s legendary battles take place on land, others are fought in spellbinding suspension aloft over rapt fans’ heads. Mighty warriors wield their finely tuned martial arts and acrobatic skills as pyrotechnics, interactive video, and puppetry prance through this multimedia production. Because this spine-tingling spectacle features loud noises and darkness, children younger than 3 may not attend Kà performances.

Cirque du Soleil Rocks With You at Michael Jackson: One

“Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” of the King of Pop’s electrifying show, hosted by the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

Michael Jackson: One is the fantastical tale of four young misfit travelers transformed by the supernatural touch of the chart-topper. While defeating “Smooth Criminals” who “Wanna Be Starting Something” to Jackson’s most beloved hits, fans are treated to visual brilliance, stunning lighting effects, and pulsing surround sound. Acrobatic feats, along with MJ’s impossibly slick dance moves, provide infectious energy. It’s a “Thriller” show for sure. Note: Children under 5 will not be allowed to attend the Michael Jackson: One show. Guests from 5 to 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Mystère at Treasure Island

Feats of strength. Daring derring-do. Agile acrobatics . Mystère , Cirque du Soleil’s longest-lived production, is where the magic began. Weaving the bewitchment at Treasure Island, this celebrated all-ages multimedia show explores comedy and laughter as thunderous taiko drums provide a powerful backdrop for dance, acrobatics, and plenty of classic gags. Guests of all ages enjoy never-fail comedic snippets that always leave the audience in stitches.

Mystère is fun for children of all ages. If younger than 1, children must stay on a parent’s or guardian’s lap throughout the show. Every child over 1 must have a ticket even if seated on an adult’s lap. Finally, some children may be scared by the show’s loud noises and moments of darkness.

O at Bellagio Hotel and Casino

The mesmerizing O dives deep into water’s twin roles: a fluid aquatic playground and a battleground that seems to defy the laws of physics. World-class acrobats, skilled high divers, and elegant synchronized swimmers create a distinctive type of live theater. Operatic characters and street performers are equally at home in the wet and wild environment of O .

Audiences will be enthralled by a highly charged fire-and-water conflict, a timeless aerial duet, and a meeting with a ghost ship. Note: Children 5 and up are allowed to attend all O performances. Some children may be scared by loud noises and periods of darkness.

Blue Man Group Captivates Luxor Las Vegas Audiences

Feeling blue and looking for fun and imaginative things to do in Las Vegas to pep you up? Imagine a trio of quirky azure-hued gentlemen, each with a supercharged imagination that knows no bounds. Now, give them the resources to unleash their wildly creative visions and turn them into reality. Meet Blue Man Group, the uber-popular headliners at Las Vegas’ Luxor Hotel and Casino.

Each one-of-a-kind show takes place in Blue Man Group’s custom-designed theater. A spacious stage and sophisticated lighting system set the tone for each performance. Think you’ve seen every type of drum there is? Think again. This fabled display features smoke drums synced to the music, and an astonishing drum phoenix’s expanding percussive wings add an explosive element.

Blue Man Group amazes without using musical lyrics or spoken words. Instead, these highly unconventional characters infuse each performance with comedy, music, and next-level nonverbal communication. To date, Blue Man Group has delighted more than 35 million guests of different cultures, languages, and worldviews.

Look For Last Minute Tickets in Las Vegas

Scoring tickets to popular Las Vegas shows can be a challenge. However, tickets may unexpectedly pop up shortly before a scheduled performance. Looking for shows in Vegas tonight? Cirque du Soleil fans will be pleased to learn that last minute tickets in Las Vegas are often available.

Cirque du Soleil’s Disney Springs Drawn to Life Show Brings Timeless Animation to New Generations

“When you wish upon a star …” Countless scores of children (and adults) have grown up with classic Disney animated characters. While these whimsically crafted avatars thrive in movies and memorabilia, they really come to life on the Disney Springs (formerly Downtown Disney) stage in a collaboration for the ages with Cirque du Soleil.

Cirque du Soleil and Disney Animation have mixed their collective creative juices to present the whimsical Drawn to Life . Inspired by original Walt Disney Animation Studios stories, this eclectic show presents the story of Julie, an inquisitive young lady who finds several unfinished drawings by her late animator father.

The Cirque du Soleil-Disney experience kicks it up a notch when Julie is captivated by a magical pencil. Not your everyday writing instrument, the pencil becomes Julie’s transport around a supersize animation table. As she travels, colorful Disney characters help Julie relive her favorite childhood Disney memories and gain insights into her future.

To bring this engaging story to life, Cirque du Soleil employs innovative set design and newly generated Disney animation. Cirque du Soleil’s trademark bold costumes set the stage for the characters’ stunning choreography and dizzying acrobatics. A Disney-inspired original score serves as a fitting backdrop for the fast-paced action. This Disney Springs show is fast becoming a “must see” destination for Disney World-bound families.

Cirque du Soleil’s Acclaimed 2023 Shows Combine Creativity and Artistic Brilliance

As the Cirque du Soleil 2023 lineup takes shape, the troupe’s beloved Las Vegas shows and Disney Springs performances continue to draw appreciative audiences. Inquiring about last minute tickets in Las Vegas could bring a windfall of open seats to shows with scarce available space.

Rest assured, even with all this pageantry on display, Cirque du Soleil isn’t resting on its laurels. The Montreal-based creative team is constantly brainstorming new, otherworldly enchantments. Nearly 400 talented craftspeople and creative specialists use diverse resources and harness the power of their imaginations to bring each new show to life. In the process, they’ll transform their dreams into electric stage experiences that will engage and inspire their audiences. And the fans will always be their focus.

Cirque Du Soleil is Coming to Chase Center From August 23-27, 2023

tour 2023 cirque du soleil

Cirque du Soleil returns to the Bay Area with one of its most enchanting arena productions, Corteo. The show makes its stop at Chase Center on August 23–27, 2023. Tickets for Corteo are available on Monday, December 19, 2022 and can be purchased here . Cirque du Soleil returns to the San Francisco Bay Area for the first time in three years with one of its most enchanting arena productions, Corteo. Directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, Corteo first premiered in Montreal under the Big Top in April 2005. Since its creation, the show—hailed as “glorious” and “breathtaking” by the San Francisco Chronicle—has amazed over 10 million spectators, in 20 countries, on 4 continents. Corteo will be presented at three venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area—SAP Center (San Jose) from August 9–13, 2023; Oakland Arena (Oakland) from August 17–20, 2023; and Chase Center (San Francisco) from August 23–27, 2023. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality. In a Cirque du Soleil first, the stage is central in the arena and divides the venue, with each half of the audience facing the other half, giving a unique perspective not only of the show, but also a performer’s eye view of the audience. An atmosphere like never seen before in Cirque du Soleil arena shows. The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. This sets the tone for the poetry of Corteo.

Tickets for Cirque du Soleil’s Live Country Experience in Nashville are Now Available

The new touring show, in collaboration with Universal Music Group Nashville, will be premiering in Nashville in July 2024.

Nashville, December 4th, 2023 – Cirque du Soleil recently announced its newest touring show creation in collaboration with Universal Music Group Nashville to premiere in Nashville in July 2024.  The Live Country Experience imagined by show designer and creative director Amy Tinkham promises to be an acrobatic, one-of-a-kind, live performance celebrating the soul-stirring melodies of beloved country legends and contemporary stars.

“There is nothing purer at heart than a Country Song in its honest expression of humanity. Values of family, love, hard work, incredible challenge and strength, fantastical dreaming, true delight, and unadulterated fun, all of which connect deeply with Cirque du Soleil. Stories that come from down to earth hardworking people are the root of Country Music, and similarly, stories that come from the streets of the world are the root of Cirque du Soleil,” added show director Amy Tinkham.

The pursuit of lifting the human spirit through artistic authenticity is a shared passion of Cirque du Soleil and Country Music, and this project is a love letter to those common aspirational ideals. The show’s storyline will follow two songwriters as they travel through time, taking inspiration from country’s classic heart-wrenching melodies to contemporary chart-topping powerhouse vocals on their search for what makes the perfect country anthem. Cirque du Soleil and country music fans will be wowed by amazing acrobatics, aerial acts, hand to hand and demonstration of extreme strength while highlighting the vibrant world of Country music that echoes the rich legacy and diversity of the genre.

The show will premiere in Nashville on July 2, 2024, until July 28, 2024, before going on a North American tour. Tickets are now exclusively on sale to Cirque Club members and to the public on December 6, 2023.

New Acts and Finale Added to Drawn to Life at Disney Springs in 2023

As part of its continuing evolution, Cirque du Soleil’s Drawn to Life has added new acts and a new finale to the show in Disney Springs.

Cirque du Soleil’s Drawn to Life opened in Disney Springs in 2021, featuring aerial artists, acrobatics, and more incredible feats from the company. In 2023, Cirque du Soleil has updated the show to add in new acts so that new and returning fans alike can enjoy the updated experience!

Drawn to Life New Acts

Drawn to Life introduced three new acts featuring in sprin 2023 acrobatics, aerial artists, and even a “flying” guitarist. The new acts include:

  • Icarian Games:  Paying tribute to Disnyey’s animated forests, and forest creatures, this act features “a pair of Ethiopian artists performing acrobatic feats in which one lies on his or her back and uses his or her legs and feet to toss the other performer in the air.”
  • Dream of Colors:  During this act, aerial hoop artists take to the air in a tribute to the ink and paint animation artists. The act features “dramatic colors ‘painted’ by human trapeze artists on a suspended wheel.”
  • During the Rhythmic Gymnastics act, a “flying” guitarist now joins the group

Additionally, new musical composition was added for each of these exciting updates.

Drawn to Life tells the story of Julia, a 12-year-old who discovers a gift left by her late animator father — a letter urging her to complete a drawing he had not finished. Julie is brought into a world of wonders, where drawings from her childhood come to life, with Disney animated characters as her guide. As she continues on the quest to complete her father’s journey, she begins to imagine new possibilities and strives “to animate the story of her future.”

New Finale to Celebrate the Second Anniversary

For 2023, Drawn to Life is celebrating its second anniversary! In December 2023, the show introduced a new finale. The updated ending features a “swing-to-swing act with artists who soar across the stage between two swings performing new awe-inspiring stunts, acrobatics, and choreography.” The act represents a “culmination of the show’s story,” which focuses on the heroine Julie, and her father, a Disney animator. The artists onstage perform in costumes inspired by the art and drawings of costume designer Philippe Guillotel.

“The new finale Swing to Swing act celebrates the completion of the triumphant journey of Julie as she finishes the lines started in an animation left to her by her father to forever link them to one another,” said Justin Sullivan, artistic director for  Drawn to Life . “The daring acrobats in the number are kaleidoscopic animated renditions of Julie and her father soaring, flying, and swinging through the air in a touching and thrilling display of amplitude, connection, and skill.”

Cirque du Soleil’s Drawn to Life has shows 5:30 PM and 8 PM Wednesdays through Saturdays, and Sundays at 1:30 PM and 4 PM. 2024 tickets are available now and can be purchased here.

Thanks to Disney for hosting us at a media event where we were able to get a preview of the new acts added to Drawn to Life.

A MAGICAL ENCOUNTER

CAVALIA TOURING CALENDAR

OPENS APRIL 19, 2017

Discover our Cavalia show

Cavalia, the first and eponymous production of the Canadian company, began its world tour in the summer of 2003. Conceived by Normand Latourelle, one of the co-founders of famed Cirque du Soleil, Cavalia is an innovative mix of equestrian and performing arts, multimedia and special effects, perfectly integrating acrobatics, dance, aerial stunts and live music.

The show – often labeled as an equestrian ballet – combines advanced technology and the fundamental relationship that humans have developed with horses throughout time, a precious bond that enabled us as humans to build bridges between cultures, to expand civilization and now to produce the purest form of art, one created through kindness, patience, and love.

Delightful, thrilling and poignant, Cavalia is a harmonious celebration of beauty and nature encompassing imagery that whisks the spectator’s imagination around the earth over land and sea. Cavalia is an epic equestrian adventure, transporting the audience into virtual environments.

The White Big Top

The White Big Top under which Cavalia presents its marvelous procession accommodates up to 2,000 spectators. The impression is that of a majestic white cathedral or a fabulous castle, its four towers extending 99 feet high. On a 160 feet wide playground, which allows for and protects their freedom of movement, the horses express themselves with grace and power, while interacting playfully with the artists.

The Cavalia Village includes six tents: the White Big Top, the Rendez-Vous VIP tent, the General Admission Entrance tent, one artistic & warm-up tent, the stables and the staff cafeteria.

FEET INTO THE SKY

The White Big Top is 110 feet high (30 metres) or the equivalent of a ten-story building.

A 210 foot-wide screen (70 metres) serves as a backdrop for the projections and special effects.

FOOT-WIDE STAGE

The stage is 160 feet wide (50 metres), the equivalent of the width of a regulation NFL football field.

CREW & STAFF

150 people are required to erect the tents and work on the preparation of the site. The set-up takes 12 days, while the tear down is completed in three days.

The White Big Top seats 2,000 spectators per show, with an adjoining General Admission tent and VIP Rendez-Vous Tent. The temperature inside our White Big Top is controlled to create the best environment for our guests. Whether you are under the White Big Top, The General Admission tent, the Rendez-Vous VIP tent or the stable tent, all areas are at a comfortable temperature all year around.

AN EXTRAORDINARY VIP OUTING

The best of Odysseo before, during and after the show. Access to the private RENDEZ-VOUS VIP Lounge 90 minutes before the show, during the intermission and after the show.

Cirque du Soleil coming back to Toronto with ECHO

Latest Videos

The Big Top is coming back this May, as Cirque du Soleil returns to Toronto with their brand new show ECHO .

Debuting their latest original production, the 51st in the world-renowned circus company's history, for the first time in Canada ECHO will feature all of the thrills, magic and wonder that Cirque is known for — but they have a few new tricks up their sleeve.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alexandre Humbert (@alexhbrt_)

The new show, created by Cirque performer-turned-director and choreographer Mukhtar Omar Sharif Mukhtar will feature a brand new set including a huge 23-foot-cube (I can only begin to guess what it'll be used for,) covered with wild visual projections.

The show tells the story of a woman who, alongside her dog, explore the connection between humans and animals and the power of actions to shape the world through a series of never-before-seen acrobatic feats, soaring aerialists and other death-defying tricks.

The Canada-wide tour of ECHO kicks off in Toronto with their debut show on May 8 under the Big Top at 2150 Lakeshore West near Humber Bay Shores Park it Etobicoke.

The Toronto leg of the tour will run until July 21, and tickets are already available through the Cirque du Soleil website .

7 Major Events in the UK 2023

Can you feel it in the air? Walk the narrow streets of London and the atmosphere seems alive with history.

Cirque du Soleil logo

Britain has lived and breathed for thousands of years, but there's something special about 2023 that makes us catch our breath. There's a lot going on hereabouts, and nobody wants to miss a moment of it. Here are some of the moments that took our breath away this year. As this year comes to an end, we celebrate the myriad of things to do in London that makes the city whole.

1. Timely News

Scotland's greatest (formerly) living poet, Robert Burns, was born on January 25, 1759. His modern admirers honor his life's work with Burns' Suppers, an annual celebration of the best laid schemes o' mice an' men. At venues all over Scotland, revelers join up for haggis, turnips, potatoes, and a lively typsy laird.

The traditional Olney Pancake Race takes place in Olney Market Place, Buckinghamshire, every Shrove Tuesday in February before Ash Wednesday. This race got its start in 1445, when a local woman had to run across town because she was late to church.

Now, 600 years later, the Pancake Race is for all the women who've lived in town for at least 6 months and ends with English pancakes for all, no matter who wins.

Well Dressing Day happens at odd times and places all over Britain, mostly in May. It's a going thing in Derbyshire and Staffordshire, when festive crowds gather to dress their local well with garlands of spring flowers to give thanks for the gift of water.

June 17 is the King's Birthday, which has been an official holiday in the Sceptered Isle since the Tudors were on the throne. These days, the event sees royal foot guards and marching bands brightening up the streets of London with a parade that members of the Royal Family, like King Charles III, never miss.

Tickets always sell out fast, but there's no charge for gathering on the Mall and cheering for His Majesty and the Union Jack.

Every Christmas, market towns all over the UK host special Christmas markets on their High Streets. Market stalls are decorated with festive bunting and garlands of traditional Christmas wreaths. Almost every site has games and entertainment for the whole family, including plenty of things to do with kids .

Larger venues even have ice skating rinks set up, where the most athletic and brash can try their luck on at a triple-axle to holiday music.

2. Coldplay's Music of the Spheres Tour

The world-famous British minstrels of Coldplay have been celebrating the end of the pandemic since 2022, when the band launched an epic two-year-long tour around the world called Music of the Spheres.

Starting in Costa Rica in Spring 2022, they made their way to Europe and played dates on the continent all year long, finally dropping by Wembley Stadium for nine nights in August. The show hit the road for, among other places, South America, Australia, the United States, and Indonesia before promising to return to the British Isles before the scheduled end of the tour in 2024.

Watch for them to wrap up in Croke Park at three shows that recently set a record for the fastest sell-off of tickets in Irish history.

3. Hot Tickets — New Attractions & Experiences

There's no end of things to see and do in London. Once the capital of a global empire, it now benefits from that legacy with attractions from all over the world.

Remember, the Fifth of November with the Gunpowder Plot experience at 8-12 Tower Hill, London EC3N 4EE, where you can relive what should actually have been a terrifying scheme by radical sectarians to blow up Parliament with an immersive VR experience and snacks.

Guy Fawkes' Day has become a tradition in Britain, and cosplaying as the one hero who can foil the 1605 plot makes it all worthwhile, somehow.

If you’re scared of heights, you and the kids might not get to the top of the Cutty Sark Rig Climb. It’s open to the public at King William Walk, where the Sark has been moored since 1954. Helmets and safety harnesses are must-haves for all climbers, the way they totally weren't for the sailors who originally manned ye olde crow's nest back in the day. The focus is on fun for everyone.

They say Gotham City is supposed to be DC Comics' version of New York, but if that's the case, why is the insane asylum in London? Come along and visit the dark side of the DC universe at the Arkham Asylum immersive experience.

It was originally supposed to open in time for Halloween 2023. Unfortunately, bad luck has seen it delayed to the end of the year, which is more time to go properly mad and get fit to be tied with the Joker.

4. Foodies Rejoice — New Places to Eat, Drink, and Be Merry

Daphne’s in South Kensington has gone all out for the Christmas holiday. Merging a wintry English aesthetic with the gaudy grandeur of an Italian festivale, this upscale dining spot is adorned with tasteful white lanterns, giant glass chandeliers, and mountains of ornaments and floral arrangements in the fireplace dining room.

We haven't tried the tiramisu (yet), but the atmosphere alone makes the visit worthwhile.

The Ski Lodge at The Montague on the Gardens has always been London's premiere winter haven. It has a darling Swiss chalet aesthetic straight off a box of Swiss Miss and a spacious wooden deck out back, but they've gone all out for the 2023 season.

Dropping real snow on the deck, this combination restaurant/hotel has made a pine forest out of its garden, where you can get a piping hot chocolate or try the mulled wine.

Did you ever read Dickens and think, "This book is pretty good, but it would be better if it was set in a glamorous New York loft with lots of extra seating and some Dean Martin music playing softly for atmosphere"? If that describes your teen years, we've found the place for you at The Little Scarlet Door in SoHo.

This cozy hotspot is a warm and inviting little nook that's tucked in a cranny you'd never find without a local friend to show you where it's at. Beyond the scarlet red door, there's a gigantic Christmas tree and stockings all hung up with care in the hopes that an after-dinner crowd of about 12 will be there.

5. Accommodation — New Places to Rest Your Head

Kinloch Lodge is the kind of place people save up their whole lives to someday spend a weekend in. This rambling 16th-century manse tucks itself into the heather around scenic loch Na Dal, Isle of Skye, in a scene begging to be painted by Bob Ross. The beds were built by hand when Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne, and they're big enough to fit your whole life in them.

Every room has a panoramic view of the loch, and you're never far from rustic ghillies and moors and probably a couple of cabers to boot. There’s also a masseur who can give you a high-intensity relaxation session.

Afterwards, you'll be allowed to melt into a puddle by the stone fireplace with a flagon of mead. Spare a kind word for Clan McDonald, which has protected the land from Sidhe since the wee early days of the lairds.

A quaint French country house is the ideal of rustic luxury for many modern British city-dwellers, if only the closest one wasn't inconveniently located in France. However, the Belmond le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons is in Oxfordshire and is such a faithful reproduction of the French cottage style that it actually flies a Tricolor flag.

This heavyset stone building dates to the 15th century, when English kings actually spoke French, and it luxuriates in exposed ceiling beams bigger than a ship's keel and a stone fire pit in the great hall that's worthy of Sir William Marshall.

Book a room in the Provence wing and you'll retire to your chamber past rows of ivy climbing over mortarless stone walls that were laid before America was discovered.

6. New Ways to Discover the Great Outdoors

The Lake District is as far from London as it's possible to get without being Scottish, and the landscape here couldn't look less like a concrete city jungle if it was trying. Mountains jut above the Cumbrian moors with blankets of green turf seeming to cling to their lower layers as if the grass was reluctant to let the mountains rise.

The lakes are crystal-clear, unlike the poems of Coleridge, who spent a good deal of his creative life here. You can walk, you can hike, you can even take a mountain bike over parts of this World Heritage site, but be careful, the locals love the place as much as we do, and they're fiercely protective of what they call "one of the only places left."

The River Thames is the iconic artery of Britain, flowing as it does through the capital, showcasing the diverse London architecture along its banks and carrying zillions of dollars worth of commercial traffic out the estuary every day. But where does it start?

Officially, the Thames begins flowing from Thames Head, a little pond near Kemble in the Cotswolds. That's not it at all, however, and there's actually a little tiny spring a few miles away that you can fritter a happy afternoon away looking for.

It's a silly mission, but it takes you around the horse paddocks, over the dales, through Mrs. McGinnis' flower beds, and into a lovely scenic country stroll in a place where the passers-by still call you "deary" when you wave. Pro tip: If you actually find the spring, don't tell anyone where it's at. We don't want to spoil the adventure for the next folks.

7. England on the Screen 2023

How quintessentially British is "Enys Men," the new film currently playing in theaters all over the UK? Well, there's no plot, it's set on the Cornish coast, and the main character doesn't have a name. This is the follow-up to Mark Jenkin's 2019 film "Bait," and it's a bleak, windswept period piece set in the days before May Day 1973.

The movie is 100% atmosphere, with dramatic sweeping shots that have been richly saturated in color and blocked by a cinematographer who might be a poet in his spare time. This film is all about the elements on the harsh Cornish coast, the same place the Lusitania was lost, and the mood is pure bangers-and-mash Britain.

Hugh Grant once said all British comedy revolves around a hapless man trying not to be horribly embarrassed in public. In that vein, imagine you've checked into a quaint rural B&B, only to be seated across the breakfast table from your long-estranged husband and his new girlfriend, who kind of looks like a younger version of you.

That's the conceit that drives "She Is Love," a sort-of comedy from Jamie Adams. This film was among the select few chosen for the BFI London Film Festival, and it's worth a date-watch with somebody special if you're close to one of the theaters where it's showing.

Embrace the English Experience

There's so much to see and do if you're lucky enough to be in the UK in 2023. From the major events in 2023 that have drawn hundreds of thousands to the holiday-centered events in the UK and scenic treasures far afield, you don't have an excuse to be bored in historic Albion.

If by chance you do have some time on your hands and you're looking for a spectacular event in London you can take the whole family to see, come and see us in person at our shows in London in 2023 and beyond. Revel in one of our whimsical performances, an acrobatics- and music-filled menagerie of awe and wonder.

High-flying Acrobatics

Cirque du soleil goes country at new state fair of texas show in dallas.

Cirque du Soleil Alegria Alegría

High-flying Cirque du Soleil (seen here in the show Alegría) will add some twang.

Cirque du Soleil, in partnership with Universal Music Group Nashville, will unveil a new country-themed show called Songblazers , which will come to Dallas during the State Fair of Texas, taking place at the Music Hall in Fair Park, September 25-October 20.

The show, which will make its debut in Nashville in July, is initially scheduled to go to eight different cities, including Sugar Land (August 1-11), Austin (August 14-18), and San Antonio (August 21-25).

With the 33-show Dallas run coinciding with the State Fair of Texas, each ticket to Songblazers will include free admission to the Fair.

This is the first time since 2013 that the organization now known as Broadway Dallas has hosted a show during the State Fair.

The production, which pays tribute to the legendary and modern trailblazers of country music, charts the journey of two main characters as they forge their own path to country recognition.

Songblazers pays homage to the trailblazers of country music's past while embracing the talents of contemporary artists. Per usual with Cirque du Soleil shows, audiences will witness acrobatics, aerial acts, and displays of strength.

Sam Williams, grandson of country pioneer Hank Williams and the son of outlaw legend Hank Williams Jr., has created a new song, "Carnival Heart," specifically for the show.

“We are thrilled to venture into the dynamic world of country music," said Duncan Fisher, President of Touring Shows at Cirque du Soleil, in a statement . "It’s incredibly exciting to fuse together the acrobatic artistry of Cirque du Soleil and the soul-stirring melodies of beloved country rhythms."

Tickets will go on sale at 10 am on March 25 for Club Cirque members and Broadway Dallas patrons. The general on-sale starts on March 28 at cirquedusoleil.com/songblazers .

Movie Review

Crime film laroy, texas is a lightweight-but-enjoyable fargo clone.

If you go by the movies, life in small towns can either be quaint and neighborly, or drudgery where even the smallest change to the daily routine can be cause for excitement. The latter is certainly the case in LaRoy, Texas , where a case of mistaken identity leads to the small Texas town having more crime than it’s seen in its entire existence.

Ray (John Magaro) is a sad-sack character seen as a pushover by the most important people in his life: His former beauty queen wife, Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson), and his brother Junior (Matthew Del Negro), who manages the hardware store where they both work. Early in the film, Ray is shown evidence that Stacy-Lynn might be cheating on him by wannabe private detective Skip (Steve Zahn), bringing even more misery into his life.

While sitting in a parking lot, lamenting his horrible life, one night, Ray is approached by a man with an envelope full of money and a request to kill a man. Although initially taken aback, Ray decides to take the job if only to bring something different and exciting into his life. The real hitman (Dylan Baker) doesn’t take kindly to someone stealing work from him, and Ray soon finds himself in several situations that upend his world completely.

Written and directed by Shane Atkinson, the film is a lightweight but still enjoyable take on a Fargo -esque story. The fact that Ray has three separate elements with which to deal – his cheating wife, the seemingly ever-present Skip, and his inadvertent entry into the world of crime – gives Atkinson different avenues into which to channel the story, which keeps the film from becoming repetitive.

He also upends expectations at multiple points in the film, from the excellent opening scene to the climactic sequence. While some of the characters adhere to storytelling conventions, several take detours that keep the film from relying too much on Texas stereotypes. Ray especially keeps viewers on their toes, as just when it seems he’s becoming predictable, he makes an unanticipated choice.

The film does get bogged down a bit in the middle section after an initial jolt of energy that comes with the set-up of the story. Stacy-Lynn and Junior are both mostly one-note characters whose importance to the plot doesn’t help them much. The real hitman, after making a great first impression, recedes into the background too often. The few times he does pop up make you wish his role called for him to be in more scenes.

Magaro is good casting for this role, as – much like he did in Past Lives – he plays the well-meaning guy who is overshadowed by others in a way that makes you root for him and hate him at the same time. Zahn has the type of face that allows him to easily play the comic relief, but he’s also good in more earnest moments. Baker makes the most of his relatively limited screentime; if only had had more.

LaRoy, Texas doesn’t do enough to be a completely absorbing crime thriller, but with a few good performances and a story that’s familiar but still surprising, it has more highs than lows. With a deadly crime spree the most interesting thing to happen in this small town, it might be worth visiting again.

LaRoy, Texas is now playing at Galaxy Grandscape in The Colony; it is also available on demand at home. It will screen as part of the USA Film Festival on April 19.
