HOW IT WORKS Most aircraft today are equipped with ADS-B transponders that transmit positional data. Flightradar24 has a rapidly growing network of 35,000 ground stations to receive this data that then shows up as aircraft moving on a map in the app. In an expanding number of regions, with the help of multilateration (MLAT), we’re able to calculate the positions of aircraft that don’t have ADS-B transponders. Coverage is subject to change at any time. CONNECT WITH FLIGHTRADAR24 We love getting feedback on FR24. Very Useful Mobile Tracking (See below for suggestions)

I will say I have been using this App for 3+ years, and I have recently just gotten a subscription. I do have suggestions for improvement starting with model variety, in specific for General Aviation and Helicopters. I do believe the model variety is very well put together for the 3D view, especially because of the most recent update implementing Infinite Flight Models(Well Done!). I came up with an idea that for helicopters, All of the helicopters in 3-D view are EC-135s, though I’ve observed on particular models like the Bell 407(B407), EC-130(EC30), Bell 412, EC-145(EC45) have their models on display on their previews, which I would like to see these models being used for their own 3-D view. There could also be more additions to expand the model pool like MD500(H500) and others. Another idea in mind, is the opportunity to allow the Aviation community to make liveries for specific aircraft, which must be approved by both the owner and the development team. This way, the model variety can stand out much further especially for popular tracked aircraft like YouTubers and any individual aircraft. (Examples; Bell 407(Med-Trans), JA789A ANA 777(BB-8 Livery), Custom private owned 3D Cessna 172)
Heads up I’m an airplane enthusiast. I love this app so dam much and I use it just about every weekend. I go to my nearest plane spotting location and use this app to see the planes on final approach and the ones on that taxiway too. This app is basically what makes plane spotting enjoyable. I do have some complaints though. For some reason there is this glitch where when a plane lands on this app, occasionally it will keep going beyond the runway even though the plane is safe in real life. It’s not that big of a deal, but I do find it kinda annoying when you are trying to find realism in the app. I also think that the prices for the memberships are reasonable, but it would be really awesome if it were a bit lower. But overall this is a great app and I totally recommend it to just about anyone who has somewhat of an interest in planes. I use it to watch my relatives fly out over the radar and like to think about what they are doing on the flight. I would love to see at least one more perk added to the basic membership just to make things better. But yes I love just about everything about this app.

Developer Response ,

Thanks for your review and feed back, very much appreciated. Regarding the Aircraft on the runway you mentioned: An aircraft’s ADS-B transponder is transmitting the position from the on board flight computer, which in most modern aircraft comes from GPS data and is very accurate. On some older aircraft (for example some older A300, B737, B757, B767 and RJ100) the position is calibrated on ground before take off and after that the current position is calculated based on speed and direction of the aircraft. When flying for some time, in wind or in circles, the calculation becomes increasingly worse, which at landing can give position calculations that are up to 10 km incorrect. Pilot Must Have

This app has gotten better with every release. If you are a pilot or a super nerd aviation enthusiast this is the app for you. If you also get the app for monitoring aviation radio communications it becomes even more fun. Watch the plane fly it’s route and monitor approach or departure frequencies and try to pick out the plane your following. I have a private pilot license and this have a backup VHF radio..sometimes I will monitor my local airport, watch planes coming over my house and listen to radio communications until they land. It’s super fun for us aviation nerds. It also helps get familiar with local approaches for IFR flying by allowing you to watch the aircrafts flight track. This can be super helpful when flying for real. Great job on the app guys!! Work on importing a higher resolution cockpit view and showing more ground details. GREAT APP!! fun app. When you fly commercially and have internet access on the flight, fairly standard these days, it’s cool to hear you own pilot work his way through heaven traffic. Now the radio monitoring app may not have all the handoff radio frequencies, but you know they will eventually be handed off to tower..:-) happy flying to all!!

Real-Time Flight Tracker | Flightradar.live | Watch Air Traffic Live

Flight tracker, flight tracking from the comfort of your own home – is that possible, how do you track flights with flightradar.live.

Below we give you some tips on how to start tracking flights using the above map.

The map displays a section of airspace. Depending on which page you have selected, flightradar.live will show you either part of Europe or an airport for flight tracking. To zoom in or out of the flight radar, you can adjust your view by clicking the “+” or “-” sign in the top left corner.

If you want to move the airspace, one click is enough; simply hold down the mouse to move the map. You can of course also view the flightradar.live flight tracker on your mobile phone. Whether you use an Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, the flight tracker information can be viewed on any device, including Internet-enabled tablets. It’s very easy to use; you can move the flight radar with two fingers, zooming in or out. Just make sure that your fingers are not too close to each other.

What flight information is displayed?

If you want to track a flight , you simply place the cursor over a yellow plane and the flight number will be displayed. If you click on the aircraft, a menu opens to the left of the flight radar. At the top, you will see the type of aircraft and, if you click on the image, you can view the aircraft image in full-screen mode. There may be several pictures of the same aircraft type. Below the picture, you will once again see the aircraft name and the airline.

The details in the grey area are relevant for flight tracking. Here you will find information about the route , the departure and arrival times as well as the current flight status. You will also find additional data, such as altitude, airspeed and information about the flight radar. At the very bottom you will see the latitude and longitude.

Where does the flight tracking data come from?

Plane photographed against the sun

The real-time aircraft location information shown here for flight tracking purposes is an online service provided by Flightradar24.com, which is operated by Stockholm-based sky scanner company Flightradar24 AB.

The signals emitted by ADS-B transmitters are received by ground-based ADS-B receivers and transmitted to the Flightradar24 network over the Internet for radar spotting purposes. Most modern civil aviation aircraft – and some military aircraft – today are equipped with these devices. The transmitted location data of the aircraft in question is correlated with further information about the aircraft type and route, and is displayed on a map. A view based on Google Earth has been used since spring 2013. The cockpit view makes you feel as though you’re actually inside the plane. This function was temporarily unavailable for flight tracking, but has been reinstalled as part of a complete overhaul of the entire website.

How do I get an ADS-B receiver?

By the end of 2014, based on information from Flightradar24, more than 4,000 ADS-B receivers were in use as sky scanners and providing their data to the website for flight tracking.

According to the operators, these receivers cover around 90% of European airspace as well as some regions of North America, Australia and the Middle East. The website claims (as of mid-2014) to see approximately 7 million visitors a month with an interest in flight radar information.

How current is the flight tracking data from the sky scanners?

Not all of the flights shown on the flight radar are displayed in real time : FAA regulations require a delay of approximately 5 minutes for flights whose data is provided directly by the FAA; this applies in particular to the North American airspace. By contrast, the flights whose location information is provided by ADS-B data are displayed in real time, according to Flightradar24.

There is both a free and a paid version of the scy scanner app available for Android and iOS-based devices. The paid version comes with a multitude of additional flight tracker features and is ad-free. There was only one paid sky scanner app for Windows and this was removed from the Windows Store in 2016.

Where else is flight tracker technology used?

Flight tracking technology is not only used on the mainland. A wave glider floating in the Norwegian Sea has been sending aircraft location data to Flightradar24 since September 2016.

Who is using the flight radar or sky scanners to track flights?

A lot of people find it interesting to track flights using flightradar.live . These may be plane enthusiasts or people who need the information for their hobby . Others may just want to see when a family member’s flight actually takes off.

There are many reasons why somebody might wish to use a sky scanner to track a flight and discover details about the altitude or plane.

What is a plane spotter?

Several Grumman E-2 Hawkeye in flight

You’re sure to have seen them before; the aviation enthusiasts who visit airports with cameras and large lenses . They are known as plane spotters and they are experts at flight tracking. Plane spotters may have collections of thousands of pictures of aircraft from hundreds of airlines, which have usually been taken at many different national and international airports.

Plane spotters are particularly interested in the plane’s registration , which is much like a car’s licence plate. The aim for many is to see every registration worn by each aircraft of a particular airline. This information and the aircraft type are displayed in a menu on the flight radar when you click on an aircraft. If you use the flightradar.live flight tracker, you can access the various airports quickly and easily via the menu. You will find the following flight radars, amongst others:

What is the history of plane spotting?

Plane spotting has its origins in the tracking of aircraft flights during World War II . In England, civilians in the coastal regions were asked to record the registrations of German aircraft in English airspace.

To this day, it is common in England to record only the registrations without taking any photos . Taking photos of aircraft only became widespread over time. The digitisation of photography, in particular, added fresh impetus to flight tracking. In addition to photography, the filming of aircraft also became more widespread. On Youtube today, you can find videos of most varied aircraft .

Flight tracking skills can also be applied outside of the aviation industry. Besides plane spotting, ship spotting and train spotting are also well established. These enthusiasts essentially do the same thing as plane spotters, but are interested in ships or trains.

What equipment does a spotter need?

A high-quality camera is essential if you want to take good pictures. A flight tracking camera needs to be able to focus and capture images quickly , which is important as planes travel at over 200 km/h. Bridge cameras , System cameras or SLR cameras are good options. A focal length of between 50 mm to 200 mm is recommended for photos from viewing platforms. For photos from outside the airport, the focal length should be 200 mm or higher.

You will also need memory cards and a tripod . Of course, to identify which planes are on the tarmac or landing, it is worth checking on flightradar.live. This will tell you in advance when an interesting aircraft has just left an airport in Sydney, for example, and will soon land in Frankfurt. This will allow you to plan better and mean that you will not be waiting around in vain.

A summer trend: Drones

These colourful, buzzing unmanned aerial vehicles (also known as UAVs) have become ubiquitous. From amusement park stalls to discount stores. What is behind the trend for drones ? For one thing, these remote-controlled aircraft are cheap to buy and easy to handle even for beginners after a little practice. Discount stores have some small drones on offer from around € 30. Larger aircraft with a built-in camera retail for upwards of € 100.

However, there is no such thing as unlimited freedom in the sky! To avoid run-ins with the police, there are a few rules that must be observed as the whirring UAVs can present a nuisance to some.

What is allowed?

Drones weighing up to 30 kilograms may be flown without a permit . However, privacy must be protected .

What are the most important points to bear in mind when handling a drone?

As the drone pilot, you should maintain visual contact with your drone at all times . Heavy drones (in excess of 500 g) can cause major damage if they should crash. We therefore recommend checking with your insurance company to make sure you have adequate coverage. Remember, drones are not a toy. Therefore, do not allow children below the age of 14 to use a drone unsupervised. The wind is another factor that is all too often neglected. If an insufficient distance is maintained from humans or animals, a sudden gust can quickly present a hazard and cause a crash.

What should be avoided when using drones?

Drones should not be permitted to fly within a radius of 100 m from large gatherings . Particular caution is also required in the vicinity of airports . The flight-tracking sky scanner on flightradar.live is helpful in connection with this. This flight radar allows you to track flights as they happen and take timely security measures. Drone cameras should only be used for photographing landscapes and close friends, especially if the captured photos or videos are later to be published on social media.

For more information about drones and what is and what is not allowed, visit: wikipedia.com .

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was March. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

Search cheap flights with KAYAK. Search for the cheapest airline tickets for all the top airlines around the world and the top international flight routes . 'Roughest landing': Watch video of plane bouncing off runway as it attempts to land at LAX

live plane travel

A Boeing 747 operated by Lufthansa Airlines ran into a couple of bumps as it landed at LAX Airport in Los Angeles.

Video footage of the landing, captured by Airlines Videos Live , shows the aircraft skidding on the runway and then bouncing off the ground as it attempts to land. The plane then takes off again, flying for a few minutes before successfully landing.

"What? Whoa, whoa, whoa," the commentator of the livestream could be heard saying. "We're getting that go around. Holy moly. Wow. That is the roughest landing I think we've ever caught on our broadcast."

A Boeing 747-8 Lufthansa flight was scheduled to land around 1 p.m. ET at LAX after a more than 11-hour flight from Frankfurt, Germany, LAX's website shows.

Columnist: Another Boeing plane issue? Don't fall for the headlines.

No injuries reported

Lufthansa Airlines, in an email statement to USA TODAY, said that Flight LH 456 from Frankfurt to Los Angeles had a "rough landing" Tuesday. 326 passengers and 19 crew members were on board the flight and no injuries were reported.

The airline said the plane later flew back to Frankfurt following "an assessment by the cockpit crew, a consultation with the technical department on site and in Frankfurt and an initial visual inspection," where it will undergo further inspection. Lufthansa did not specify if the plane flew back empty or had passengers on board.

Airline Videos Live captures planes as they take off and land at LAX Airport. The livestream was created in 2019 by Los Angeles TV News photojournalist Kevin Ray, according to the YouTube channel account description .

While Boeing incidents have been in the news in recent months after a series of high-profile incidents , aviation experts maintain you shouldn't worry about flying .

“We don’t have to worry that there’s something systemically wrong with aviation,” Clint Balog, an associate professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, previously told USA TODAY.

Live streamer captures the moments a jumbo jet aborts landing at LAX Airport

By Lesley Marin

April 24, 2024 / 9:50 PM PDT / KCAL News

For the last three years, Kevin Ray has streamed hundreds of planes taking off and landing for his nearly 800,000 YouTube subscribers.

Not much can shock him.

"Whoa! Whoa! We're getting a go-around. Holy moly," Ray said on Tuesday afternoon.

Ray was at LAX Airport when he witnessed a Lufthansa Airline Boeing 747-8, which can carry up to 400 passengers and crew, attempt to land. It hit the runway hard and then bounced forward before the pilot rejected the landing and booked it back into the air.

"Almost looked like it was gonna hit in the front part and when see that kind of stuff that is concerning," he said. "That is the roughest landing I think we ever caught on our broadcast."

While it may have looked rough and dramatic, two aviation experts said it wasn't dangerous.

"It was terrible landing a real clunker but there's nothing dangerous about it because those airplanes are built to take it," retired pilot Barry Schiff said.

Captain Laura Einsetler flies similar wide-body planes in and out of LAX.

"It's possible it was a higher, faster approach into the airport, and we can't tell just how far into the runway they were touching down, so it could have been a contributing factor," she said.

Einsetler explained that a landing rejection and go-around are some of the many skills pilots are ready to use at each touch down.

"Once in a while you see a non-routine operation like a difficult landing," Schiff said. "The pilot salvaged and there are procedures for doing just that.

The flight eventually made a smooth landing in the end, but the initial rejection left an impression on Ray.

"I'll probably never see something like that every again, which is good," he said.

Airlines must cough up cancellation cash and can no longer hide fees under new federal rule

A federal rule announced Wednesday will require airlines to quickly give cash refunds — without lengthy arguments — to passengers whose flights have been canceled or seriously delayed, the Biden administration said.

“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them — without headaches or haggling,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement.

The rule from the Transportation Department says passengers who decline other reimbursement like travel credits are to get cash refunds.

Image: Salt Lake City travellers

It applies when a flight is canceled or has a “significant change,” the administration said.A “significant change” includes when departure or arrival times are three or more hours different from the scheduled times for domestic flights or six hours for international flights, and when the airport is changed or connections are added, it said.

Passengers are also to get refunds when their baggage is 12 hours late in delivery for domestic flights.

The new rule comes after promises to hold airlines accountable after major disruptions that made travel hell for passengers, including the 2022 Southwest Airlines meltdown , which resulted in almost 17,000 significantly delayed or canceled flights and a missing baggage nightmare.

The Transportation Department said that the new rule means refunds are automatic and that "airlines must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops."

Also announced Wednesday was a rule requiring airlines to more clearly disclose so-called junk fees upfront, such as surprise baggage or other fees, the department said.

It said that rule is expected to save fliers around $500 million a year.

The surprise fees are used so tickets look cheaper than they really are, and then fliers get the unwelcome surprise of fees on checked bags, carry-on bags or reservation changes — or even discounts that are advertised but apply to only part of the ticket price, officials said.

Airlines will also have to tell fliers clearly that their seats are guaranteed and that they don't have to pay extra to ensure they have seats for flights, according to the Transportation Department.

Airlines for America, an industry trade group, said that its member airlines “offer transparency and vast choice to consumers from first search to touchdown” and that they do offer cash refunds.

The 11 largest U.S. airlines returned $10.9 billion in cash refunds last year, an increase over $7.5 billion in 2019 but slightly down from $11.2 billion in 2022, the group said.

“U.S. airlines are providing more options and better services while ticket prices, including ancillary revenues, are at historic lows,” Airlines for America said.

Left out of the federal changes announced Wednesday are those involving "family seating fees," but the Transportation Department said in a statement that "DOT is planning to propose a separate rule that bans airlines from charging these junk fees."

Travelers have complained to the Transportation Department that children weren’t seated next to accompanying adults, including in some cases young children, department officials said last year.

Fees on bags specifically have made up an increasing amount of airline revenues, the Transportation Department said Wednesday in announcing the new rules.

A Transportation Department analysis found that airline revenue from baggage fees increased 30% from 2018 to 2022, while operating revenue — which is from the flights themselves — increased by only half that amount, the department said.

CHP takes suspect into custody after 2 lengthy standoffs on 91, 710 freeways

KABC logo

COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect was taken into custody following two lengthy and bizarre standoffs in Paramount and Compton that caused major traffic jams on Friday.

The suspect was apprehended on the westbound 91 Freeway in Compton after California Highway Patrol officers surrounded his van and pulled him out of the vehicle shortly before 7:50 p.m.

For more than an hour, the man refused to surrender as his van was cornered between officers and the freeway wall.

Prior to the standoff, CHP officers slammed into the van after the suspect led them on a brief chase on shredded tires down the 91. At one point, officers fired what appeared to be less-than-lethal rounds that shattered the van's windows.

From then on, officers tried to get the suspect to surrender as traffic began to back up on the westbound 91. However, the suspect used a tire and cardboard to cover the broken passenger window to prevent officers from seeing him.

There appeared to be some communication between the suspect and officers during the ordeal.

The standoff didn't end until officers - some carrying shields - approached the van from both sides and pulled the suspect out of the vehicle.

live plane travel

The incident began when the suspect, who was accused of kidnapping a woman, led authorities on a chase that ended in a standoff just off the 710 Freeway at Alondra Boulevard in the Paramount area. That standoff led to the closure of the southbound 710 just before 5 p.m. and caused traffic in the area to come to a halt.

The suspect eventually got out of the van when no patrol vehicles were behind him, but he returned and later got on the 91 Freeway.

Long Beach police says a woman initially reported she had been kidnapped, but as officers continued to investigate they reported no kidnapping occurred.
