Loreena’s sound is hard to pin down, but with 14 million records sold worldwide, it’s most definitely a popular one.
Canadian born and of Scottish and Irish decent Loreena abandoned her earlier dreams of becoming a Vet when the allure of music came to her. Unusually, she developed a passion for Celtic music, no doubt spurred on by her Scottish heritage, and began to play the Celtic Harp publically, busking round Toronto in order to raise enough money to advance her music.
It was here that Loreena began to develop her unique sound. She is generally considered a world music artist but is usual because of the extensive research she does on the areas where the music she is emulating comes from. In a way her music becomes folk music as the entire history of the place she is emulating becomes entwined in the music. For example, her research in the Galicia, the Celtic area of Spain, led to ‘The Mask and The Mirror’ an album that intertwined the Arabic and Celtic sounds that merged together in the area.
She has toured worldwide with the likes of Mike Oldfield and her music has been used in popular films like Ever After, all of which has helped to build her profile to the point where a number of her albums have turned multi-platinum. It’s not often a world music artist sells this many records, but the depth and history that is contained within her music has obviously helped it to resonate with a broader audience than previously thought possible.
Live reviews
Loreena McKennitt has the voice of an angel. Each time I hear her my breath is taken away. I have listened to recordings over and over again, and never grow tired of the crystal clear soprano that resonates right through me. For this reason, I was desperate to see her perform live. Goodness me, I had no idea that she was such a talented multi-instrumentalist as well.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on tickets for a really intimate venue and I was right at the front. Watching her fingers dance across the harp was something that you could never grasp from a recording, and was really worth witnessing in person. Her style is extremely unique, and she even put a new spin on her own music, mixing things up to surprise the audience. It’s great that she dedicates herself entirely to the music and the story that she’s telling, watching her facial expressions, movement, and the way she carries herself offers a whole new level of meaning to each and every track. When she performed the Lady of Shallot, everyone was singing along, and she even stopped singing intermittently to allow the crowd to join in. The way that McKennitt chatted so informally to the audience was great, as we were able to see snippets of her personality that don’t translate in her music. After seeing the concert, now whenever I listen to her recordings, it takes me back to that fantastic evening.

My Sister and I drove to Calvin theater in Northampton MA October23,2015 From North Kingstown RI. We both were very excited to finally see Loreena Mckennitt again! The Last time we saw her was 8 years ago at the Providence Performing Art Center in Rhode Island. She is my favorite Artist and I would Travel anywhere to see her on Tour. Calvin theater was perfect to see her play. The concert was sold out and people were waiting in line to hopefully see her if there were any no shows. She was excellent, and very intimate with the crowd. She told us stories about her life and she has a great Since of humor. Her singing was beautiful and the other two Musicians complemented Loreena"s style. She did two encores and ended the Concert with my favorite song Full Circle! Yet it did not end there, she actually came out to see her Fans. I finally got to Meet her and I am still on a high 4 days later. I hope she tours again someday cause I miss her already! Thanks Loreena for coming to the USA. Hugs and kisses, Donna Diorio
Supierior. Authentic. Organic with electricity.
Experiencing Loreena for the first time live was such a pleasure and a dream come true. Beyond that my experience included my youngest adult child, Azure, and excellent seats which definitely enhanced the experience. Azure grew up on Loreena and plays harp, among other instruments. Loreena and here band mates are excellent talents. Nothing touches the voice of Loreena. Her voice enters my heart and never leaves. Thank you to Loreena, Caroline and Brian. May the long time sun shine upon you...
This was a lovely show Loreena did several tracks from Lost Souls and 'Ages past, ages hence' was really outstanding. Concert was more upbeat than expecting and almost rocky in places but all the better for that. Of course, Loreena's trademark style, Celtic with hints of the middle east and Spain for this tour, was evident. Her background chats are also a nice, personal touch. The band are very accomplished musicians and hang together brilliantly. All in all, an uplifting experience which is what music is all about.
The show was absolutely fantastic. Classics like Dante's Prayer, Annachie Gordon, Stolen Child, Bonny Portmore and many others. This trio performance was like they were playing in your living room, very interesting narrations of Irish famine, Yeats and stories of Loreena's travels throughout the years. Having broken a string on her harp, Loreena was entertaining with her jokes also. Look forward to seeing Loreena play when she comes to the UK again.
The candlelit stage was the perfect setting for Loreena McKennitt's beautiful, magical, mystical, ageless music. She told wonderful stories of the history of the Celts to lead into each of the songs. As an early childhood educator, I was especially pleased with the segue into the song, The Stolen Child, as she spoke of the need to encourage and allow children to play outdoors. I highly recommend anyone to partake of the woman's beautiful music.
Absolutely a great show..We came from Oshawa to see her.Loreena rocks..and weve been fans for years......the show in Kingston on Friday was great....the venue too was really fantastic, Loreena stayed thro the intermission to answer questions from the audience. So happy we got tickets and will be on the watch out for further shows in or around our area. Thank you Loreena !!!!!
Danke.
I traveled from Ct to finally see Loreena in her last concert in Nov. and it was fantastic! It completes my bucket list unless she resumes her concerts in the future. She’s my favorite artist and now that the world is in pandemic mode, her music makes being isolated much more bearable. Thank you Loreena
Loreena is an exceptional singer and such a good person.
Thanks for this wonderful experience and human sharing.
Salle Pleyel is a good place, even in low category the sound is good.
My only regret is that I dont have much money to get better places or to go toi Lyon toi see her!

“On a handful of winter’s nights close to the solstice of December 2021, my musical friends and I wove this miscellany of music and spoken word,” writes Loreena in the new album’s liner notes. “…I sought to incorporate elements of the oral traditions found in many cultures – to capture, inspire and reconnect us with our past, while offering a reminder of the people of those times and what their manner of communication meant in their lives and might mean still.” ~ Loreena

Loreena McKennit visits Cincinnati on her first tour in half a decade
This week, WYSO music director Juliet Fromholt spoke with Canadian singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Loreena McKennitt. McKennitt performs on Thursday, November 2, at the Taft Theater in Cincinnati as part of her Visit Revisited Anniversary Tour, which commemorates her 1991 album, The Visit . A blend of folk and new-age influences, The Visit won Best Roots and Traditional Album at the 1992 JUNO awards, and remains among the singer’s best-known albums. In the interview, McKennitt spoke with Juliet about returning to touring after a hiatus, and recounted stories of recording The Visit . She also discussed the environmental themes of some traditional Irish folk songs, and reflected on the connection between her music and her civic life.
In 2018, Loreena McKennitt felt that she needed to take a break from music. “I just felt that I needed time out to reassess whether or not I should continue on with my career,” she said, “There are other priorities and issues in the world.” McKennit said she worried about environmental destruction and the erosion of democracy around the world. Yet, when she left her Ontario farm this year and began playing for live audiences again, she knew it was the right decision. She compared the feeling of sharing music to the feeling of sharing a meal:
“It’s quite gratifying... I feel that preparing the music is a bit like preparing a meal for friends—it’s not complete until you’ve actually invited the friends over for dinner, and hopefully they like some of what you have to offer.”
McKennitt’s November 2 performance in Cincinnati is part of the North American leg of The Visit Revisited tour, which will continue to the United Kingdom and Europe in Spring 2024. This year marks the 22nd anniversary of her fourth album, The Visit , which she released on her own Stratford, Ontario-based Quinlan Road record label in 1991. The album features original songs as well as traditional songs of the British Isles, like “Greensleeves” and “Bonny Portmore.” McKennit told Juliet that she initially never planned for “Greensleeves” to be part of The Visit . In fact, the song was recorded several years earlier, during a session for her 1989 album, Parallel Dreams . She told the story of the recording:
“That track has such a funny history. It was never a song I intended to record. I was working on an artist development project in 1988 with PolyGram. We were recording four other pieces, and the engineer had to take a phone call. There were about three or four of us on the studio floor, and just to bide time, I said to them, ‘I wonder how Tom Waits would do “Greensleeves”.’ So we started messing around. The engineer was keeping half an ear out for what we were doing, and when he got off the phone, he said, ‘Why don’t we just take a version of that?’”
McKennit said that the spontaneous “Greensleeves” recording exemplifies the ephemerality of creative inspiration. She told Juliet, “There are times where there is a kind of channeling or a visitation aspect to it, that you can prepare yourself for the circumstances that you might be creative—but you actually can’t go and force yourself to do things after a certain point. You have to let the moment fuel your inspiration.”
While McKennit stressed the unpredictability of musical inspiration, she also emphasized the social value of folk music traditions, some of which can be traced centuries into the past. She told Juliet that while modern communications technology allows for instantaneous flows of media and information, it also has contributed to the decline of music-making as social activity.
“Long before radio, television, and the internet, poetry and folk music were means by which people could tell their histories and their stories. It really stitched them together. I think in contemporary times, we’ve swung way to the other side of the spectrum…. There can be a dilution and a fracturing of those traditions, and what is most concerning to me is breaking down those cultural expressions of spending time together— doing something together, like singing together, playing music together, just for the love of it.”
Often, McKennit added, folk songs can be surprisingly relevant to contemporary social and political issues. She gave the example of “Bonny Portmore,” a traditional Irish folk song that tells the story of a great oak tree that was used for shipbuilding after it fell in 1760. She said that the song resonates in our age of global warming and globalization.
“People were lamenting the cutting down of this one tree, but I think there was a greater reflection on the decimation of the forest that took place all over Europe, including Ireland, for ship building—this is the empire building of England… That’s still such a contemporary concern.”
Loreena McKennit’s latest release is Under a Winter’s Moon (Live at Knox Church, Stratford, Ontario / 2021) , which came out in 2022. She told Juliet that her next album , The Road Back Home , is slated for release in spring 2024. The album is a collection of traditional Celtic music, recorded with Celtic band The Bookends. For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic
The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.
The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.
The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.
The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.
For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
