Miami Luxury Vacations & Bespoke Travel

With an innovative, art-forward culture, cutting-edge cuisine, pastel-colored Art Deco architecture and a languid Latin flavor, Miami presents an urban luxury vacation that calmly covers all the cosmopolitan bases. And let’s not forget the Atlantic Ocean views: Miami Beach and South Beach sizzle with a giant swath of prime sand just waiting for you to dig in.

This coastal metropolis, veritably gleaming in year-round sunshine, delivers a tidy city escape frosted with a delicious icing of natural beauty and botanical treasures. An entrenched art and design scene captures the imaginations of all who visit Miami’s destination museums, wander along the street-art walking tours and polish up for the pop-up art parties of Art Basel each December. Similarly, the city’s Mid-Century Modern and Art Deco architecture, particularly with the Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive

hotels, yields luxury vacation rentals that deliver high style in retro comfort. Cuban and Asian influences are well-incorporated into Miami’s sophisticated culinary exploits, with all the celebrity chefs scrambling to open restaurants here. Local talent, too, injects major flavor enhancement. The popular food halls – like the Lincoln

Eatery – bring it all together. Post-dessert, it’s time to hang out with the beautiful, the celebrated, and the just plain fun-loving. There’s a crowd here for everyone, at the DJ pool parties, the swish rooftop bars, the neighborhood fiestas, and the hot dance clubs. Miami comes alive at night – and so will you.

The 15 Best Luxury Hotels and Resorts in Miami

When it comes to luxury lodgings, miami has a hotel for everyone—and these are the very best of them..

  • Copy Link copied

Miami has grown far beyond its reputation as a beachfront vacationland. Over the past couple of decades, it’s morphed into a sophisticated international destination and tech hub, complete with world-class art, Michelin-starred restaurants, and cultural institutions all over the city.

Miami’s hotels have evolved, too, with luxury hotels ranging from intimate retreats in sleek high-rises to a sprawling Ritz-Carlton on the beach. For AFAR’s Hotels We Love series, we’ve selected the 15 best hotels in Miami and Miami Beach—listed in no particular order—for different kinds of travelers, whether you’re in town for business or on a long weekend break in search of winter sun and vibrant culture.

1. 1 Hotel South Beach

The outdoor pool at 1 Hotel South Beach with white benches surrounding the pool and pink purple bougainvillea flowers on the right of the frame.

The pool at the 1 Hotel South Beach.

Courtesy of 1 Hotels

  • Location: South Beach
  • Why we love it: An eco-friendly jewel in South Beach with massive rooms, multiple pools, and a serious wellness focus
  • Loyalty program: Mission by 1 Hotels

It’s hard to make a splash in flamboyant South Beach, but when it debuted in 2015, the 1 Hotel South Beach managed to make a mark—not with opulence, but rather with eco-consciousness. The hotel, with its spacious Bamford spa, has become a hub for stylish, wellness-focused travelers who love its environmentally friendly features like salvaged wood, living plant walls, and bulk toiletries. The four pools include an adults-only one on the roof with ocean views, while guests have direct beach access with chairs and umbrellas. Children are welcomed with a play area on the beach and a kids club.

Rooms here are massive, with the smallest starting at 700 square feet. White and beige rule the color palette, with rattan and wood accents for a beachy feel. Also included are hemp mattresses covered in organic sheets, chalkboards instead of wasteful pads of paper, and take-home socks in place of disposable slippers. There’s a yoga mat in every room, should you feel so inclined, though you could also head down to the massive fitness complex, yoga deck, and obstacle course (yes, really).

If you’re feeling peckish, buy a snack at the lobby farm stand, or head up to the rooftop at Watr, where a menu of sushi and light entrées like hotpot rice and chicken karaage come with a panoramic view of the city. Downstairs, Habitat reimagines traditional Mexican food with a sustainable twist, plating up local grouper tacos, wood-fired steaks, and Florida Red Snapper Veracruzano. From $549

2. Faena Hotel Miami Beach

Damien Hirst's Gone but not Forgotten art installation at the Faena Miami features a large gilt wooly mammoth skeleton.

Courtesy of Faena Miami

  • Location: Mid-Miami Beach
  • Why we love it: Opulence meets fine art, with burlesque shows and two of Miami’s top restaurants

Fashion designer and art connoisseur Alan Faena first made his name in hotels with a Phillipe Starck–designed property in Buenos Aires in 2004. He brought the concept to Miami on a grander scale, creating an entire district of art and hospitality out of dilapidated art deco high rises. The centerpiece is the Faena Hotel, whose lobby welcomes guests with a sea of gold leaf and murals, leading to a gilded mammoth skeleton on the back patio. The hotel is as much an attraction as it is a place to stay, where the theater hosts sexy burlesque performances and a menu at Fuego features melt-in-your-mouth steaks by noted Argentine chef Francis Mallmann.

The 179 guest rooms keep the aura of overstated elegance, where ocean views are complemented by tiger-print throw pillows and deep red curtains. By South Beach standards, the rooms are big: Entry level accommodations start at almost 500 square feet. Faena serves to show the world that Miami has moved past its days of tacky luxury and serves as a symbol of the city’s place in the modern art world. From $665

3. Four Seasons Surf Club

A hallway at Four Seasons Surf Club, with white walls, high ceilings, and palm trees

Four Seasons Surf Club

Courtesy of Four Seasons Surf Club

  • Location: Surfside
  • Why we love it: A slice of old Miami fuses with modern luxury, with a Thomas Keller restaurant steps away

During Miami’s original heyday as a playground for wealthy northerners, the Surf Club served as a social hub where posh people basked in the sun beside the Mediterranean revival main building. Much of the original 1930 club has been restored by the Four Seasons, and a walk under the wooden beams and arched ceilings feels like a step back to a bygone era. Look for original ceiling frescoes in the lobby. Patrons revel in fine wine at the hotel’s swanky Champagne Bar outside Lido, which brings white-tablecloth fine Italian dining to the shoreline.

No conversation about the Four Seasons is complete without a nod to Thomas Keller’s Surf Club restaurant, which received one of Miami’s first Michelin stars. While the dining experience is phenomenal, the hotel’s main attraction is still its rooms. The oversize, modern spaces offer floor-to-ceiling ocean and bay views, with white marble bathrooms and fine linens. They’re the kind of place where you wake up and immediately realize you’re on a luxury beach vacation, setting a relaxing tone for the day. From $1,500

4. Mr. C Miami — Coconut Grove

A King room at the Mr. C Miami hotel, with a blue and white palette and balcony

A Deluxe King room at Mr. C Miami.

Courtesy of Mr. C Miami

  • Location: Coconut Grove
  • Why we love it: Lacquered woods and fine Italian food give this bayfront hotel the feeling of being on a Mediterranean luxury yacht
  • Loyalty program: Leaders Club (Leading Hotels of the World)

From the team that created the Bellini cocktail at Harry’s Bar in Venice and brought chain restaurants to the jet set with Cipriani, this Coconut Grove hotel is a tribute to Europe at its most refined. Here, long hallways of polished wood suggest an Italian luxury ship. The rooms have porthole windows and nautical sketches, and balconies offer semi-private outdoor escapes.

Mr. C shines on its rooftop, where a long pool offers views out over the bay and the Miami skyline. After you’ve soaked up your panorama of Peacock Park, try Bellini, the hotel’s signature restaurant. It feels a little like a 1920s Parisian cocktail bar. You can order a Bellini for nostalgia’s sake, but once seated, you’d be remiss not to have the Bucatini cacio e pepe, a silky staple that showcases how simple dishes with a handful of ingredients can still be gourmet. From $400.

5. Acqualina Resort & Residences

A white Deluxe Intracoastal room at Acqualina Resort, with city skyline views

A Deluxe Intracoastal guest room at Acqualina Resort in Miami

Courtesy of Acqualina Resort

  • Location: Sunny Isles
  • Why we love it: Full-on apartments with gourmet kitchens come with towering views of the Atlantic Ocean—and make you feel like a local

While some might balk at Acqualina Resort ‘s location in far-flung Sunny Isles, if you came to Miami to play on the beach, eat world-class food, and surround yourself in European luxury, you’ll have no reason to leave. Acqualina has gained acclaim largely due to its 1,100-square-foot guest rooms. Full kitchens with gas ranges and stainless steel appliances allow you to prepare breakfast and you enjoy it in a nook over the water. Separate dens provide for extended stays and remote work, while marble bathrooms with rain showers and soaking tubs feel like in-room spas. Each floor only has four rooms, so there are no hallways or crowded elevators.

Acqualina offers secluded pools with fountains and design touches inspired by the Cote d’Azur, offering a secluded escape from the beach-going masses. If you want to get out on the sand, stroll down the resort’s red carpet to the water, where private lounge chairs await. After a long day of sun-soaking, turn right off the lobby and linger over a long dinner at Il Mulino New York. The Miami outpost of this NYC stalwart offers house-made pastas and rich red sauces in a space that could be Manhattan if not for the tropical breezes. For a change of pace, guests can also opt for Ke-uH, a Japanese fusion concept centered around an indoor cherry blossom tree. From $750

6. Nobu Hotel

This Deluxe King room at the Nobu Hotel Miami Beach features a bathroom with neutral colors and a large walk-in shower.

A Deluxe King room at the Nobu Hotel Miami Beach.

Courtesy of Nobu Hotel Miami Beach

  • Why we love it: Japanese elegance and some of the world’s best sushi await at this hotel-within-a-hotel at the Eden Roc

The Nobu Hotel sits inside the landmark Eden Roc, the Morris Lapidus–designed gem that’s been a vacation icon in Miami Beach since 1955. Nobu offers an upscale escape from the mega-resort, where neutral-hued rooms and tranquil hallways give the aura of a Japanese onsen spa. All Nobu rooms have private balconies over the ocean or Intracoastal Waterway, with floor-to-ceiling windows and teak benches in the rain showers. The design inspires relaxation with light woods and special Nobu signature beds from Simmons.

Nobu guests have access to an adults-only swimming pool above the Eden Roc’s main pool deck. Here, the clamor of children falls silent as attendants pour complimentary champagne. Guests can also dine at the hotel’s eponymous restaurant, and while reservations aren’t automatic, they’re not hard to get if you’re staying on site. In addition to all the Nobu luxury, guests also have access to everything at the Eden Roc (so if you did bring your children, there are plenty of places to play). From $399

7. Aka Brickell

A suite at Aka Brickell in Miami, with blond wood walls and large windows facing the city

A suite at Aka Brickell in Miami

Courtesy of Aka Brickell

  • Location: Brickell
  • Why we love it: A playful lifestyle brand opens in the heart of Miami’s financial district, with two world-class restaurants on site
  • Loyalty program: Access AKA

Aka earned its reputation as a long-term-stay hotel, but with this new venture inside Brickell’s arch building, it’s a proper hotel that offers travelers a seamless blend of business and leisure. While the front desk sits on the ground floor, the hotel’s main lobby is on the 25th, where panoramic windows reveal views of the Brickell skyline, Key Biscayne, and Biscayne Bay.

Rooms offer similarly panoramic views from oversize windows, while large bathrooms have soaking tubs and brass-adorned showers, with dual sinks and bay views. Aka also offers the best opportunity of any Brickell hotel to indulge in Miami’s dynamic food scene. The 25th floor is home to Adrift Mare, where celebrity chef David Myers serves a full array of Mediterranean delicacies, including a spicy falafel salad and crispy eggplant. On the ground floor, Basque-inspired Zeru stands as one of 2023’s biggest culinary hits, where Josper-grilled steaks and fresh seafood draw power lunchers by day and gourmands by night. From $300

8. Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne

Guest room at the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, with large balcony facing ocean

A guest room at the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne

Courtesy of Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne

  • Location: Key Biscayne
  • Why we love it: A spacious oceanfront paradise with a multi-level swimming pool and an epic Sunday brunch
  • Loyalty program: Marriott Bonvoy

They call Key Biscayne “the Island Paradise,” and this Ritz-Carlton is befitting of a place with such a name. The property looms like a castle above this little island off downtown Miami. At this exclusive getaway, guests can enjoy the hotel’s private powder sand beach or walk up the shore to the palm-lined Crandon Park. Rooms all have at least partial views of the ocean, with marble bathrooms, separate bathtubs and showers, and pillowtop mattresses.

The hotel seems to double its crowd on Sundays, when Lightkeepers hosts its weekly brunch buffet. Locals flock across the causeway for this massive spread, which is best enjoyed with a table overlooking the swimming pool and turquoise water beyond. At night, Rumbar is a sexy cocktail lounge that transforms itself into theme bars for Halloween and the Holidays. Guests can also opt for dinner at Cantina Beach, a sandy coastal Mexican spot that serves some of Miami’s top fish tacos. From $375

9. The Setai, Miami Beach

A Grand Suite bedroom at the Setai, Miami Beach, with hardwood floors and beach views

A Grand Suite bedroom at the Setai, Miami Beach

Courtesy of the Setai, Miami Beach

  • Why we love it: Elegant Asian luxury with a romantic restaurant and weekly jazz brunch

The Setai offers a sophisticated alternative to the frenetic party-time energy of other area properties. It attracts numerous celebrity guests, thanks in part to its attentive and discreet service. While the hotel’s exterior may be somewhat staid, with art deco flourishes that are modest compared with other hotels built in that era, the Setai more than makes up for this in interior design. Somehow avoiding being ostentatious, the hotel still uses ultra-luxurious everything : the finest Swedish beds, deluxe Italian linens, deep soaking tubs, and lacquered wood furniture and accessories. The building also includes bookable residences, ideal for extended stays.

The dining at Setai is also luxurious. Jaya offers upscale South Asian cuisine served among twinkling lights floating atop a reflecting pool. On the weekend, the space transforms into a live jazz stage, where music accompanies a sprawling brunch buffet. From $975

10. W South Beach

This living area of a suite at the W South Beach features hardwood floors, a large white couch, a pink carpet, and a large table made of light wood.

The living area of a suite at the W South Beach.

Courtesy of W South Beach

  • Why we love it: Andy Warhol art in the lobby, a secluded jungle pool, and craft cocktails in the Living Room

The W South Beach owns one of the largest collections of original Andy Warhols outside a museum, lining a lobby that announces itself as exceptional as soon as guests walk in. The art alone makes this hotel worth a visit, even if you’re not spending the night. Venture just past the Warhols and you’ll step into the W’s signature Living Room bar, where fresh juice cocktails and high energy fill the bar on weekends. Upstairs, the guest rooms are contemporary havens with white walls and floors and pops of coral and green; many have balconies with ocean views.

The W’s pool is its signature, where verdant foliage surrounding the deck suggests a jungle swimming hole. That remote ambiance is occasionally disrupted when A-list DJs stop by for impromptu sets, or when renowned local chefs man the grill at one of the W’s frequent backyard barbecue events. From $599

11. Carillon Miami Wellness Resort

Carillon Miami Wellness Resort offers apartment-style accommodations with kitchens.

Carillon Miami Wellness Resort offers apartment-style accommodations with kitchens.

Courtesy of Carillon Miami Wellness Resort

  • Location: Miami Beach
  • Why we love it: One of the best spas in the city, with all-apartment accommodations

Plenty of luxury hotels pay lip service to their “wellness” offerings. The Carillon , however, makes it nearly impossible to leave without feeling healthy. The resort resembles a massive spa, from the jasmine-and-citrus scented lobby to the soft linens in guest rooms. Each one is a one-bedroom apartment, where you can cook your own healthy food and savor it on your balcony.

While the balmy environs are rejuvenating, the big draw at Carillon is its spa, a multi-level masterpiece where you can choose from an array of treatments. Immerse yourself in a warm water chamber shaped like an egg, or undergo sensory deprivation in a private lounge. After your day of pampering, head into Tristan Brandt’s Michelin-starred Tambourine Room, where a French tasting menu awaits. For something more casual, head to the beachside pool and order a fresh pressed juice or organic salad. From $699

12. JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa

The living room of the Orchid Presidential Suite at the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa, with abstract art and large couch

The living room of the Orchid Presidential Suite at the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa in Miami

Courtesy of JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa

  • Location: Aventura
  • Why we love it: Miami’s coolest water park, plus one of the city’s most popular golf courses and a top-notch steakhouse

The JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa has gained acclaim for its championship golf course, which also hosts the Miami Dolphins’ annual charity tournament. It put itself on the family travel map with its addition of Tidal Cove, an onsite water park that combines a chichi Miami pool scene with the high-speed fun of careening waterslides. So you can live like a kid for a few hours, with the added advantage of grown-up beverages.

After your wet and wild fun, retreat to Bourbon Steak, chef Michael Mina’s outpost filled with prime beef and rare bourbons. Guests can also sample new American fare at Corsair Kitchen and Bar, a more casual spot perfect for lunch between rounds. For a nightcap, enjoy a cocktail at Soff’s Lobby Lounge, a dark leather-clad space designed to transport guests back to Miami of a century ago. Then wake up in the morning for your tee time at Turnberry, where only hotel guests and club members are allowed to play. From $335

13. Biltmore Hotel

  • Location: Coral Gables
  • Why we love it: a destination resort outside the city with an epic pool and lush golf course
  • Loyalty program: I Prefer (Preferred Resorts and Hotels)

George Merrick’s original Mediterranean revival masterpiece still stands as one of Miami’s grandest hotels, a tribute to fine design and intricate detail. The Biltmore opened in 1930, and despite the Great Depression still thrived as a winter getaway for the elite. Its 18-hole golf course is a big reason why; most guests here have also booked a tee time. If golf isn’t your game, lounge by the Biltmore’s sprawling lagoon pool. During its original years, the 600,000-gallon pool was a celebrity hangout for the likes of Judy Garland and Johnny Weissmueller.

The rooms have kept pace with the times, though you’ll still find nods to the old days like gold trim, velvet upholstery, and framed fine art. It’s a level of early 20th-century luxury rarely found in South Florida and adds sophistication to any Miami vacation. From $299

14. The Goodtime Hotel

  • Why we love it: Detailed Floridian design everywhere from the lobby murals to the rooms, and one of the top pool parties in Miami

In Miami, there is a fine line between “scene” and actual luxury. The Goodtime Hotel is the odd Instagram darling that also offers a high-quality experience, from its Ken Fulk–designed interior to its lively rooftop pool. Murals of Old Florida swampland line the lobby, with tributes to alligators and ibises throughout the hotel. Pink pinstripes dominate the decor, creating a sort of Florida fantasyland across Goodtime’s seven stories.

Rooms run a little small, though the beds are plush and the bathrooms colorful. It’s not the kind of hotel where you lounge in your room, though, not with poolside massages and glasses of champagne downstairs. The pool is especially lively on the weekend, when DJs like David Guetta and Steve Aoki host splashy parties that last into the night. Just off the pool, Strawberry Moon serves grilled Mediterranean cuisine that’s both flavorful and light enough to leave you confident to walk around the pool deck in your swimsuit in the morning. From $199

15. Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove

A suite living room at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove in Miami, with zigzag a blue and white carpet, large white sofa, and floor-to-ceiling windows

A suite living room at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove in Miami

  • Why we love it: Coconut Grove’s most underrated bar sits on the ground floor, welcoming guests to the Grove’s most luxurious digs

The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove plays perfectly into the neighborhood’s tropical bohemian vibe, while still maintaining the brand’s standards for luxury. Each room comes with its own balcony looking out over either Biscayne Bay or the leafy neighborhood below, with fine rattan furniture and floor-to-ceiling windows. Bathrooms are spacious escapes into white marble with oversize tubs and separate showers.

Downstairs, guests can kick back in the Commodore bar, which feels like a rum running ship’s captain’s chamber with a roaring fire and large leather furniture. Its ambience is different from anything else in Coconut Grove, offering a fine alternative to the area’s collection of funky local bars. Next door, Isabella’s serves grilled meats, fresh pastas, and local seafood in an outdoor tropical garden. From $349

Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club

Four Seasons brought new life to The Surf Club , which originally opened in 1930 in Surfside, just south of Bal Harbour. Architect Richard Meier’s glassy building added 77 rooms and suites to the historic club, and designer Joseph Dirand’s interiors bring the colors of nature indoors. Beige walls and warm-toned marble echo the sand outside, while green and blue accents recall the palm trees and Atlantic Ocean, visible from most rooms through their floor-to-ceiling windows. After a day sunning at the beach or pool, guests can dine at Le Sirenuse , the first-ever international outpost from the restaurant at the legendary Amalfi Coast hotel.

Living room at 1 Hotel South Beach

1 Hotel South Beach

Reclaimed woods, organic linens, and a massive living wall: 1 Hotel’s commitment to sustainability permeates every facet of this jumbo-sized oceanfront resort. But going green never comes at the expense of luxury. Its 425 airy rooms and suites average an impressive 700-square-feet each, among the largest in all South Beach, and guests in the sprawling accommodations sleep on grey-toned oak beds topped with cotton mattresses. In the bathrooms, Carrara marble soaking tubs and rainfall showers further solidify this eco-friendly resort as anything but roughing it. Scattered throughout the U-shaped property, four pools cater to different crowds. Families head to the oversized center pool, for example, while lap swingers exercise in the Cabana Pool. The most epic views, though, come from the 18th-floor pool, adjacent to the hotel’s rooftop bar. The adults-only space has 360-views of the ocean to the east and the downtown Miami skyline to the west.

Living room at The Villa Casa Casuarina

The Villa Casa Casuarina

Built as a private mansion in 1930, Casa Casuarina’s Old World architecture and Greco-Roman statuary convinced fashion designer Gianni Versace to purchase the villa in 1992 while on vacation in Miami. He spent the next three years—and over $32 million—renovating and expanding the house into a gilded palace. After the designer’s untimely murder, the so-called Versace Mansion changed hands several times before reopening as a luxury boutique hotel, first in 2014, and again— following extensive restorations—in December 2017. Now, the ten baroque-style suites, with trompe l'oeil walls, frescoed ceilings, and leopard-print furniture, offer guests an exclusive and intimate glimpse into the life of the style icon. JS tip: Don’t miss taking a dip in the pool; it's comprised of over a million mosaic tiles, many of them 24-karat gold.

Living room at Faena Hotel Miami Beach

Faena Hotel Miami Beach

Argentine hotelier Alan Faena collaborated with costume designer Catherine Martin and director Baz Luhrmann—the Oscar-winning power couple behind dazzling films like Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby —to create this Mid-Beach resort . The result? A retro-glam masterpiece chock-a-block with theatrical accents, like a 24-karat gold wooly mammoth skeleton from Damien Hirst. In the 169 eye-catching rooms and the oversized lobby, dubbed “The Cathedral,” red and gold abound, with pops of turquoise to remind you that this Gatsby party is in Miami and not West Egg. Each floor features dedicated, around-the-clock butler service, and guests enjoy access to a 22,000-square-foot spa, a serene beachfront pool, and two of the buzziest restaurants in Miami: Los Fuegos , Argentine griller extraordinaire Francis Mallmann’s love letter to wood-fired meats, and Pao , an Asian fusion hotspot from chef Paul Qui.

Pool at Fontainebleau Miami Beach

Fontainebleau Miami Beach

This balcony-clad, crescent-shaped resort in Mid Beach feels more like an ultra-luxe cruise ship than land-lubbing hotel. Since 1954, it’s dominated the Miami hotel scene, and not just in size—though, at 1,504 rooms, Fontainebleau is the city’s largest hotel. It’s also been Miami's perennial paragon of style and star power. Early on, Marcus Lapidus’s iconic Art Deco design attracted Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley. Nowadays, the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Sean Combs, and Gwyneth Paltrow can be seen lounging at one of the resort’s 11 pools, dining at one of its seven restaurants—including a Hakkasan and Scott Conant’s Scarpetta —or partying at its nightclubs. Guests looking for a more relaxing experience could easily spend their whole vacation at Lapis, Fontainebleau’s 40,000-square-foot spa.

The Miami Beach EDITION

Ian Schrager’s sceney resort draws design-conscious sun seekers, including a fair share of A-Listers, to its 294 rooms and bungalow-like suites in Mid Beach. They come for the 1950s glamor vibes—like white marble floors and golden mosaic-tiled columns—and plentiful entertainment options. There’s a restaurant from Jean Georges Vongerichten, a tranquil spa, and an underground nightclub complex, Basement, which has its own bowling alley and ice-skating rink. Outside, there are two stunning pools lined with lush tropical plantings and a hidden hammock garden called “the Sandbox.” And that’s saying nothing of one of the prime reasons anyone travels to Miami: the beach. EDITION sits adjacent to 70,000 square-feet of pristine white sand.

St. Regis Bal Harbour

With the Atlantic Ocean at its back door and Miami’s swankiest retail mecca across the street, St. Regis Bal Harbour might be the beach town’s most strategically located hotel. More than $1 billion went into its opening back in 2014, and in the ensuing few years the 27-story resort has cemented itself as an opulent escape for the high-rolling fashion set looking for some beach time. The Yabu Pushelberg-designed interiors exude elegance-and-chill with varying shades of gray, tan, and slate-blue, and crystal and beveled-glass mirror accents nod to Miami’s Art Deco heritage. Each of the 243 rooms and suites open to 210-square-foot balconies overlooking the sea. Below, two infinity pools—one for families, one for grown-ups—and the Zen-like Remède Spa beckon guests returning from shopping sprees.

luxury travel miami

Acqualina Resort & Spa

With its colossal yellow portico, marble columns, ornate fountains, and abundance of chandeliers, Acqualina looks like what the Doges of Venice would have built if only they’d had more money. The 51-story Mediterranean-inspired resort in Sunny Isles is a palazzo on steroids, but the opulent design from Isabel Tragash never feels over the top. The 98 residential-style rooms and suites, done in soothing tones of gray and cream, are a measure of understated elegance. But it’s the attention to service and unparalleled waterfront access that sees guests return year after year (a staggering 50 percent of guests are repeat visitors). Acqualina is the only resort in Miami without a public boardwalk separating it from the beach, and its five pools and landscaped grounds extend all the way to the sand. Kids can spend their days at the family-friendly Beach Club Pool, the dedicated sandcastle zone and life-sized chess board, while grown-ups can relax, cocktail in hand, at the adults-only Tranquility Pool.

Are you in South Beach? Or is it Shanghai? Hard to tell at The Setai , an exceedingly stylish beachfront resort with teak floors, lacquer furniture, and bronze and dark stone accents. Either way, you won't care. Most of the resort’s sophisticated 135 suites—they’re all suites—occupy a blue-glass skyscraper, although a few are in an adjoining heritage Art Deco building, AKA the circa 1937 Dempsey Vanderbilt Hotel. All feature Duxiana beds, black granite baths, and Acqua di Parma amenities, and suites in the new tower have jacuzzi tubs as well. For relaxation, there’s an indulgent spa with treatments from Paris-based Thémaé, but the real attraction are the three-in-a-row infinity pools which are maintained at a precise 75, 80, and 90 degrees, respectively.

Mandarin Oriental, Miami

From its exclusive location on Brickell Key, a small island of luxury condos just offshore from Brickell and Downtown, Mandarin Oriental, Miami gives guests a commanding view over the city’s glassy skyline and Biscayne Bay. Take it all in—with a Pisco sour and ceviche in hand—from the terrace at La Mar by Gastón Acurio , the hotel’s buzzy restaurant from the popular Peruvian chef. Away from the tourist crowds of South Beach, the Mandarin has traded Art Deco design for the brand’s signature Asian touches, and the hotel’s 326 rooms have a decidedly urban feel. But fear not, beach-lovers: this is Miami, after all. The hotel’s plush tri-level spa opens onto a rounded pool deck where steps lead down to a 20,000-square-foot man-made, private swath of sand.

The Best Hotels in Miami

From glamorous beachfront resorts to breezy eco-luxe havens.

By Irenie Forshaw

luxury travel miami

With its golden sandy beaches, palm tree-lined streets and bustling clubs, Miami is a popular vacation spot – especially as much of the US battles through the bone-chilling winter months. Each year, thousands of travelers flock to its sunny shores to sip cocktails by the pool and indulge in some R&R. And while the city is famed for its nightlife – partying ‘till the break of dawn’ in the words of Will Smith – it’s still essential to have somewhere comfy to rest your head, even if only for a few hours. Luckily, Miami is home to an array of luxury hotels that can hold their own among the very best in the world. From glamorous beachfront resorts to breezy eco-luxe havens, we’ve compiled a list of the city’s top accommodations that are a cut above the rest.

The Setai, Miami Beach

the setai miami beach

Situated steps from the ocean, this all-suite hotel is one of the most enviable addresses in Miami. The Setai is a short walk from Lincoln Road where you’ll find plenty of gourmet restaurants, bars and boutiques. Location-wise, it doesn’t get much better than this.

The property is comprised of two buildings: an Art Deco masterpiece and a contemporary 40-story tower. Interiors are stylish yet discreet with an Asian-inspired aesthetic (think clean lines, dark teak wood and cozy lighting).

A major draw is the Valmont Spa where you can indulge in an array of treatments from detoxifying mud wraps to signature facials. There’s also a nice selection of restaurants including Jaya (a celebration of cuisines from across Asia) and the Ocean Grill (which serves an assortment of fresh seafood).

If it’s glitz and glamour you’re after, this is a top contender. The striking lobby sets the tone: Expect enormous crystal chandeliers, gleaming marble floors and dramatic mirrored walls.

When it comes to dining, you’re in for a real treat. Grab a casual bite at the hotel’s blue and white-hued Greek eatery, Atlantikos, or head to La Gourmandise in the lobby for authentic French cuisine. The Miami Beach Edition

the miami beach edition

Located in the trendy Mid-Beach area, The Miami Beach Edition is surrounded by stylish bars, eateries and upscale condos. It’s a popular spot with celebs; Leonardo DiCaprio has been snapped here a few times.

The hotel is home to 294 guest rooms and suites including 28 secluded oceanfront bungalows. Interiors are pared back and comfortable; floor-to-ceiling windows let the views take center stage while marble bathrooms and fine linens add a touch of luxury.

Be sure to book a table at Matador – The Miami Beach Edition’s signature restaurant developed by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten (the vibrant menu showcases the flavors of South America, the Caribbean and Spain). The resort also has two pools, direct access to a private beach, and, in the basement, a 2,000-sq-ft ice skating rink.

Our favorite accommodation is the Bungalow Penthouse. If it’s privacy you’re after this is ideal; the suite features a wraparound balcony with panoramic ocean views, a dedicated elevator and secluded rooftop plunge pool. Count us in.

1 Hotel South Beach

1 hotel south beach miami

Eco-conscious travelers will love the next entry on our list; 1 Hotel South Beach features a 300-ft green wall bursting with almost 12,000 varieties of local plants and several electric charging points so you can bring your Tesla.

Occupying an entire block on Collins Avenue, the oceanside resort is ideally situated at the point South Beach meets Mid-Beach. This means Miami’s famed clubs, bars and restaurants are within walking distance, but it’s just quiet enough to feel like a tranquil haven away from the madness.

Rooms are breezy and laid-back. The cream-and-blue color scheme nods to the coastal location while rustic wooden furnishings add to the beach vibe. That’s not to say the hotel forgoes luxury: Expect Calacatta marble tubs, soft cotton robes and seriously comfy king-size beds.

Dining at 1 Hotel South Beach is centered around sustainably sourced ingredients; enjoy vibrant Mexican dishes on the outdoor terrace at Habitat, grab a healthy plant-based option at the P1nthouse or head to the rooftop restaurant – Watr – for Japanese-influenced cuisine with gorgeous ocean views.

Top Suite: Sky Penthouse

We adore the Sky Penthouse – a sprawling two-story suite with four bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms and a 5,300-sq-ft rooftop terrace dotted with day beds. Booking this exclusive accommodation comes with an array of extra perks including round-trip airport transfers, a dedicated concierge and two treatments at the spa.

Fontainebleau Miami Beach

fontainebleau miami

Since welcoming its first guests in 1954, Fontainebleau Miami Beach has carved out an enviable reputation as one of the biggest and best hotels in Miami, serving as the backdrop for countless movies from Scarface to The Bodyguard.

The iconic resort is located in the heart of ‘Millionaire’s Row’, steps from the ocean. Spread across two newer all-suite towers and two original buildings, the sprawling hotel features 1,504 guest rooms – many with breathtaking sea views.

It would be easy never to step foot outside the resort; dining options are plentiful spanning everything from popular Cantonese eatery Hakkasan to chef Michael White’s elegant Italian restaurant, Mirabella. The resort is also home to an expansive spa and celeb-hotspot nightclub, LIV.

Top Suite: Sorrento Penthouse

If you really want to push the boat out, book the Sorrento Penthouse. Covering almost 10,000 sq ft, the pièce de résistance of the multi-level suite is its private rooftop terrace complete with a Jacuzzi.

acqualina miami

If you’re looking for an oceanfront location without the crowds, Acqualina is a safe bet. The Mediterranean-style resort is nestled among Miami’s northern beaches on the shores of Sunny Isles Beach, a short drive from Bal Harbour Shops .

This is somewhere you can really relax and unwind: Aqualina has four swimming pools, and an impressive 20,000-sq-ft spa with expert therapists on hand to carry out an array of Ayerverdic-inspired treatments.

The resort also has some wonderful al fresco dining spots including Il Mulino New York – a romantic Italian eatery (expect white tablecloths, red roses and a pretty outdoor terrace with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean).

Top Suite: Grand Deluxe Three-Bedroom Suite

Of the 98 rooms at Acqualina , the Grand Deluxe Three-Bedroom Suite is the most opulent of all. With its marble floors, glittering chandeliers and billowing white drapes, you’ll be enveloped by a sense of calm from the moment you step through the door.

Four Seasons at The Surf Club

Four Seasons at The Surf Club

Another equally glamorous hotel in a quieter part of town is Four Seasons at The Surf Club . The iconic property is located on a nine-acre stretch of beachfront in the tranquil residential community of Surfside (you can still reach the bright lights of South Beach in about 20 minutes).

Since opening its doors on New Year’s Eve 1930, The Surf Club has catered to a glamorous crowd; Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor and Alfred Hitchcock are among its star-studded clientele. The legendary members-only club closed its doors in 2013 and, four years later, Four Seasons took over the property, restoring the original clubhouse and adding a 12-story pair of gleaming glass towers.

As well as a palm-fringed champagne bar, the hotel is home to several restaurants including the casual al fresco eatery, Winston’s, and chef Thomas Keller’s Michelin-starred The Surf Club Restaurant (located on the historic Surf Club property).

When you’re not relaxing in a cabana by the pool, there are plenty of activities to fill your time from private airboat tours of the Everglades to deep-sea fishing and snorkeling in the Florida Keys.

Top Suite: Marybelle Penthouse

The top key is the 7,200-sq-ft Marybelle Penthouse – named after the yacht Harvey Firestone and his peers sailed on when they discovered the land on which The Surf Club is built. What really sets this suite apart is the sizeable rooftop terrace and private in-room spa treatment area.

Mandarin Oriental Miami

Located on Brickell Key – a man-made island off the shore of downtown Miami – this waterfront retreat boasts stunning views across Biscayne Bay. This is the place to stay if you’re looking for a secluded haven away from bustling South Beach.

As those who have stayed at a Mandarin Oriental property will expect, the hotel is seriously luxurious; expect stylish, modern décor with lashings of marble and contemporary artworks dotted throughout. Chef Gaston Acurio’s glamorous Peruvian restaurant feels right at home here (request a table out on the terrace for a memorable evening dining at the water’s edge).

It’s well worth whiling away an afternoon at the spa where guests can indulge in an array of treatments – our favorite is the hotel’s signature Celestial Black Diamond Infusion Facial which utilizes 111SKIN’s potent anti-aging products to leave you with a dewy glow. Mandarin Oriental also built its own private stretch of white sand; peppered with swaying palms, umbrellas and sunbeds, it’s every bit as idyllic as Miami’s famed beaches – sans the crowds.

Top Suite: Oriental Penthouse Suite

For the best views of the skyline, book the Oriental Penthouse . Set across the top floor of the hotel, the opulent abode features a balcony running the entire length of the suite and a state-of-the-art media room.

Faena Hotel Miami Beach

Faena Hotel Miami Beach

Last but by no means least on our list of the best resorts in Miami is this wonderfully extravagant hotel in the heart of Mid-Beach. Argentine hotelier Alan Faena brought in movie director Baz Luhrmann and his wife, Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin, to oversee the renovation. Interiors are colorful and flamboyant; gilded columns sit alongside accents of red velvet and elaborate murals.

Best of all, the hotel features its own theater which hosts acclaimed cabaret performances and concerts (there’s live music at the Saxony bar, too). It’s also a major dining destination; be sure to book a table at Argentine grillmaster Francis Mallman’s restaurant.

Elsewhere, you’ll find a 20,000-sq-ft spa, the Tierra Santa Healing House, which features an enormous hamman (you can also book in-room treatments from the comfort of your suite).

With five bedrooms, multiple balconies, a kitchen and living room complete with a grand piano, it doesn’t get much more opulent than this. Decorated with custom furnishings by Frank Pollaro, unique artworks and more than a touch of leopard print this eccentric suite promises an unforgettable stay in Miami.

The 10 Best Hotels in Miami Beach

Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club

With balmy temperatures year-round and a thriving Latin cultural scene, visiting Miami Beach almost feels like leaving the U.S. However, no passport is required to experience the city’s dazzling white sand, turquoise-blue waters, and colorful Art Deco architecture.

The seven-mile island along the Atlantic Coast has something for everyone, from the party-until-the-wee-hours-of-the-morning nightlife of South Beach to the more serene and family-oriented North Beach. Then, there’s the Goldilocks compromise of Mid-Beach right in between, with a laidback atmosphere by day and a livelier vibe by night.

With dozens of hotels to choose from — with many as eclectic as the city itself — this guide breaks down some of the best accommodations in Miami Beach. As a hotel aficionado and South Florida frequenter, here are some of my top choices, with help from T ravel + Leisure’s staff editors and readers, as well as top picks from our World's Best Awards winners.

Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club

Also available to book at Expedia.com and Hotels.com

Four Seasons at the Surf Club, at the northern end of the island, is a tranquil beachfront oasis in the otherwise busy commotion of Miami Beach.

It's one of the pricier options on our list.

This World’s Best Awards winner for five years running (taking home the number 1 spot in 2023) is among Miami Beach’s most luxurious and secluded properties. The hotel stands out not only for its decorated history among Hollywood’s elite, but also for its transformation into a welcoming destination for families, couples, and full-time residents.

The 77 guest rooms and suites offer floor-to-ceiling views of the Atlantic Ocean, Biscayne Bay, or the city alongside the contemporary style (and comfort) of French designer Joseph Dirand. Throughout the hotel's public spaces, from the stunning Champagne Bar to a library's worth of coffee table books, guests are encouraged to relax for a while and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. With “Serenity Lawns” and beachfront gardens perfect for a sunrise stroll, we like how Four Seasons at the Surf Club never feels overcrowded.

The Details:

  • Distance from Airport: 15.6 miles from MIA
  • Pet Policy: Pets allowed, free
  • Parking Fee: $55 valet per night
  • Resort Fee: $49 per night
  • Starting From: $615 per night

The Setai, Miami Beach

Also available to book at Hotels.com and Expedia.com

We’re into The Setai’s minimalist aesthetic, with Asian-style decor and Art Deco accents; it’s an ideal South Beach address for those looking for privacy.

This is the place to stay if you’re seeking deep tranquility with the buzzy vibe of South Beach outside your door; just know that it’ll come with a higher price tag.

As an all-suite enclave with 151 keys across 40 floors, The Setai somehow feels like a true hideaway in one of the busiest parts of Miami Beach. A two-story, zen-inspired lobby welcomes guests into this World’s Best Awards winner, where Beyoncé and Madonna have also happened to vacation. Polished attendants ensure guests have everything they need for a day of relaxation across three pools — one cold, one warm, one hot — and a gorgeous stretch of private beach.

If catching up on sleep is on the agenda in between partying, this is the place to do it. King-size beds are dressed in Frette linens with handmade Swedish Duxiana mattresses. Meanwhile, bathrooms have double vanities, soaking tubs, and rainfall showers, plus bath amenities by Palm Angels. And we didn’t even mention the decadent Valmont Spa.

  • Distance from Airport: 11.9 miles from MIA
  • Parking Fee: $49 valet per night
  • Resort Fee: None
  • Starting From: $975 per night

Faena Hotel Miami Beach

Also available to book at Tripadvisor.com and Hotels.com

Whimsical decor and extravagant luxury provide guests with a certain “wow” factor that we think sets Faena apart from other Miami Beach hotels.

Faena is as much a luxury resort as it is a contemporary art exhibit – which is contrary to what you'll get with more traditional hotels.

Faena has that Hollywood movie set magic, and for good reason. "The Great Gatsby" director Baz Luhrmann and his wife, Oscar-winning designer Catherine Martin, helped shape the reimagination of the property several years ago. Yes, that’s a woolly mammoth skeleton decked out in 24-karat gold inside a temperature-controlled glass cage near the beach.

Thankfully, Art Deco style and bold Hollywood glamour coexist with genuinely luxurious digs and white-glove service. From bright turquoise velvet drapes to plush Deco area rugs, the 179 rooms and suites are every bit as opulent as the public spaces. Each floor has its own butler, too.

Our World’s Best Awards winner houses the Tierra Santa Healing House, Faena’s sprawling 22,000-square-foot spa. It features one of the largest hammams on the East Coast (and you can bet you’ll find us there). Indulge in one of the shaman-inspired treatments or body-healing rituals after a nosh at Los Fuegos, Argentine super-star chef Francis Mallmann’s open-fire BBQ restaurant.

  • Distance from Airport: 11.2 miles from MIA
  • Pet Policy: Pets allowed, $250 nonrefundable deposit per stay and $25 per night
  • Parking Fee: $60 valet per night
  • Resort Fee: $45 per night
  • Starting from: $500 per night

The Miami Beach EDITION

A minimalist but chic approach to design is the star of the beachfront Edition — but there are amenities galore here, too.

With an ice skating rink, nightclub, and five F&B establishments, this 322-room property is a self-contained destination in and of itself; smaller boutique lovers take note.

The Ian Schrager-designed hotel toes the line between mid-century decadence and restrained modernity with an expansive, all-white marble lobby and original mosaic columns. It’s all beautifully done in a stylish, minimalist way. Speaking of lobbies, the Edition has one of our favorite scents in any hotel, a Le Labo-customized fragrance that’s a signature offering.

Basement, a subterranean entertainment space, is one of the most talked about amenities, as is the bowling alley and ice skating rink. Of course, this Mid-Beach property is right on the ocean, too. If you never left the hotel, no one would blame you – we wouldn’t want to take off the fluffy hooded robes, either. Even better, this World’s Best- awarded hotel can be booked using Marriott points.

  • Distance from Airport: 11.3 miles from MIA
  • Pet Policy: Pets allowed, $300 fee (including $150 cleaning fee) per stay
  • Parking Fee: $45 valet per night
  • Starting From: $399 per night

1 Hotel South Beach

1 Hotel South Beach is an eco-friendly, luxury utopia with a private beach and a stellar location (and it’s even a solid option for families with a kids’ club).

With over 400 rooms and the amenities of a sprawling resort, 1 Hotel manages to be an effortlessly chic retreat — but there’s no hiding that it’s massive.

A World’s Best Awards winner, 1 Hotel South Beach doesn’t just say it is eco-conscious. This carbon-neutral property has a LEED Silver certification and interior elements made with reclaimed materials. (The house car is also an electric Audi).

Every one of the 425 rooms and suites features driftwood walls, hemp blend-filled mattresses, recycled pine headboards, and clothes hangers created from recycled paper. Say goodbye to expensive bottled water, too, as every faucet in the hotel has Triple Clear Water filters – drink from the tap to your heart’s delight.

The 1 Beach Club deserves a call out for its design, bringing a sense of island paradise to the heart of Miami Beach. It’s a certifiable oasis with palm trees swaying in the breeze and birds chirping amongst the foliage. If that wasn’t enough, we’re very into the pool deck and bar located 18 stories up above the water.

  • Distance from Airport: 11.7 miles from MIA
  • Parking Fee: $58 valet per night
  • Resort Fee: $55 per night
  • Starting From: $449 per night

The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach

We think the recent $90 million renovation breathes new life into the Ritz, cementing its status as a classic oceanfront luxury hotel in the heart of South Beach.

The 376-room property is right on the corner of Lincoln Road and Collins Avenue, so it's embedded in the (sometimes touristy) South Beach scene.

While fully outfitted with modern amenities, The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach embodies mid-century modern glamour as a 1953 original design by Morris Lapidus. Architecture enthusiasts may even notice the nod to an ocean liner, with curved lines and balconies similar to that of a ship’s deck. The expansive pool area, in a unique cross shape, offers plenty of loungers and umbrellas, plus some seating alcoves with chairs. We’re also big fans of the sturdy wood seats with thick padding (any high-end hotel that doesn't have plush cushions on top of its loungers just doesn’t cut it). With a Ritz Kids Club, spacious rooms, and ample facilities, this is also a family-friendly resort.

  • Distance from Airport: 12 miles from MIA
  • Pet Policy: Pets allowed, $150 per stay
  • Starting From: $599 per night

Soho Beach House

Soho Beach House Miami

As one of the more boutique-y properties on this list, Soho Beach House has all the exclusive Miami Beach amenities (rooftop pool, library, and spa, just to name a few) one could want, with an intimate footprint of fewer than 50 rooms.

Non-Soho House members must sign up for Soho Friends , a $130 annual membership that gets you into Soho House accommodations around the world, among other perks.

While Soho is known for its whole "private membership" charade, guests at this Mid-Beach property have access to all the amenities — without a full-fledged membership. The Beach House features a 100-foot private pool with loungers (along with a second pool on the roof), and a private beach with beds that come with fully-stocked coolers of Evian, coconut water, and fruit. Even better, we love that it’s all complimentary for guests.

Inside, with a shabby-chic design, expect a refined yet charmingly jumbled aesthetic. There’s a library, screening room, and Soho’s famous Cowshed Spa, with a salon that harkens back to the days of old-school barbershops. The courtyard Italian restaurant Cecconi's serves world-class Venetian cuisine.

  • Distance from Airport: 10.9 miles from MIA
  • Pet Policy: Service animals only
  • Resort Fee: None, but non-Soho House members are charged an additional $130 per stay (Soho Friends membership valid for one year)
  • Starting From: $450 per night

The Betsy Hotel

Also available to book at Hotels.com and Tripadvisor.com

We like the unique architecture and history of this boutique hotel, merging two iconic properties right in the heart of South Beach.

If you want to be within a stone’s throw distance of the bars, restaurants, and shops in the Art Deco District, this is the place to be. That said, Ocean Drive can get particularly touristy.

The Betsy is tailored to a more grown-up crowd even though its Ocean Drive address might say otherwise. There are books everywhere here, from the dedicated hotel library to a personal collection in each room. Jazz evenings and literary events take place throughout the year. There is a lot of history at The Betsy, too, which opened in 2009 after a multimillion-dollar restoration of the property developed by architect L. Murray Dixon. In 2016, the hotel combined with the storied Carlton Hotel to become one larger (but still not too big) property.

Best of all, the hotel is a couple of blocks removed from the raucousness and beating pulse of South Beach, yet offers the same excellent beachfront views and all the interesting people watching you can handle.

  • Distance from Airport: 11.4 miles from MIA
  • Pet Policy: Pets allowed, $150 fee per stay
  • Resort Fee: $40 per night
  • Starting From: $349 per night

The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort

Also available to book at Expedia.com

Far from the action up north in Bal Harbour, The St. Regis is about sophisticated luxury with an air of privacy and exclusivity; a 30-minute drive gets you into the commotion.

It’s a little sleepy this far north in Miami Beach, so just expect that you’ll be trading in late-night outings for Louis Vuitton boutiques.

The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort, near North Beach's dual Bay Harbor Islands, is a peaceful enclave that offers what travelers have come to expect from the brand — an eye toward attentive service (there aren’t many other properties that give you a dedicated butler no matter which room you book).

We like how the 216 rooms and suites evoke a sense of calm with neutral tones and textures. Balconies use glass partitions so as not to obstruct any views, and even base-level rooms are larger here than at some competing luxury hotels; a deluxe room with one king bed is 650 square feet. Guests can relax beside two pools — an adults-only "tranquility" pool, and one for families — as well as on the 1,000-foot white-sand beach.

  • Distance from Airport: 15.7 miles from MIA
  • Pet Policy: Pets allowed, $100 fee per stay and $20 per night
  • Starting From: $589 per night

Carillon Miami Wellness Resort

Carillon Miami Wellness Resort

With the largest spa in South Florida and fitness classes galore, this all-suite property knows how to do wellness right.

If you’re looking to go off-property, Carillon’s residential location isn’t the most interesting; Uber a few minutes down to the action in South Beach or north to the upscale enclaves of Surfside or Bal Harbour.

Carillon is an all-suite beachside retreat in the northern section of Miami Beach. It’s among the best for all things wellness , with dozens of workout classes, an impressive two-story rock climbing wall, and even a dedicated wellness concierge. We appreciate how the hotel’s wellness program is actually led by a medical doctor, combining Eastern and Western practices for holistic health. Clearly, if you’re looking to detox and truly unwind — and perhaps ignore the rest of the Miami Beach scene — this is the place to do it. Families will also love all the space that the accommodations provide; each one- or two-bedroom suite includes a separate bedroom and living space, including a full kitchen. It feels more like a high-end Miami Beach condo than a Miami Beach hotel.

  • Distance from Airport: 13.4 miles from MIA
  • Pet Policy: Pets allowed, $250 fee per stay
  • Parking Fee: $40 valet per night
  • Starting From: $495 per night

Know Before You Go

No need to rent a car.

If you plan to stay in Miami Beach for the duration of your trip, a car isn’t really necessary. (Also, parking at any of these properties doesn’t come cheap). It’s easy to grab an Uber from Miami International Airport with the ride taking between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. Ride-hailing is also readily available once you’re on the island. There’s even a free trolley that makes occasional stops along Miami Beach.

It can get expensive during peak season

Miami Beach is known to get pricey during certain winter weeks, with events such as Art Basel bringing international crowds — causing hotel rates to soar. In addition, it may be wise to avoid peak periods around college spring break in March and April.

Don't be afraid to explore beyond the touristy sites

Ocean Drive is great for its beaches , sights, and people watching, but it’s probably best to eat and drink elsewhere. The popular strip’s dining establishments (especially in the South Beach area) tend to be high on price and low on quality.

How We Chose These Hotels

These Miami Beach hotels were selected taking into account both reader and editor favorites, Travel + Leisure World’s Best award winners (see the 2023 winners here), as well as writer Chris Dong's personal experience visiting Miami Beach (as a former snowbirding New Yorker) on numerous occasions over the past ten years.

And, as always, the hotels selected for all of our roundups adhere to our core T+L Hotel Values to ensure we are offering readers with the highest-quality recommendations possible.

The 14 Most Luxurious Beach Hotels in Miami

From beachside concerts to a neon-lit bowling alley, these are the ultimate oasis spots under the Miami beach sun.

There are close to 185 hotels in the 15.2 square-mile area that makes up Miami Beach—an astonishing 60 percent of which are located in South Beach, a design mecca with original Art Deco buildings that line Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue—with more coming soon, including ones from the likes of Aman and Bulgari .

With so many choices, selecting a hotel seems like a Herculean labor unless you know how to look. “When choosing a hotel in Miami, it’s best to determine how you want to feel during the stay,” says Misty Belles, an executive at luxury travel consortium Virtuoso . “Are you there as a couple, with kids, or with friends? Do you want to see and be seen or hide away and relax?” Miami has many options for either and many things in between. Just make sure that the property has the services and amenities you’re looking for. “For instance, if the beach is where you plan to spend your days,” Belles says. “check that the hotel has a designated section for guests with food and beverage service.”

Still unsure? We have you covered. Here are the 14 best beach hotels in Miami.

Acqualina Resort and Residences

acqualina resort spa

Let’s start off with a gorgeous oceanfront Sunny Isles property designed for sunbathers who prefer to be far from the disco din of Miami Beach proper. With its three pools and private beach, it’s the place to take a much-needed chill pill.

1 Hotel South Beach

1 hotel south beach

If you like your luxury beach hotels eco-friendly, then this is the place for you. The holy trinity of green-living buzzwords—organic, reclaimed, and sustainable—is fully represented here in the bedding, food offerings, and furnishings. Enjoy the view of infinity with an exceedingly small carbon footprint.

Fontainebleau

fontainebleu miami

This is where James Bond famously stayed in Goldfinger . With a pedigree that cool, there’s really nothing else to be said.

Faena Hotel

faena miami

This was the most-discussed hotel for several years leading up to its opening in 2015, and it would turn out to be totally worth the hype. Almost a decade later, it’s still the buzziest, most decadent beachfront properties in Miami. You know you want to take a selfie in front of the golden woolly mammoth sculpture by Damien Hirst.

the setai miami beach

Known for its mixture of East Asian aesthetics housed in an Art Deco skeleton, it is a feast for the eyes, and a luxurious one at that.

The Miami Beach Edition

miami beach edition

The Edition opening was another one people were glued to. The brainchild of real estate magnate and Studio 54 co-owner (and codefendant) Ian Schrager, this Collins Avenue lodestar features a signature scent of black tea and bergamot and a neon-colored bowling alley.

the palms hotel spa

It’s not just a clever name. While walking from the hotel to the beach, you’re constantly under a canopy of palm branches. Located in north Miami Beach, this is the place for you if you’re looking for peace and quiet.

Nikki Beach

nikki beach miami

OK, this one isn't technically a hotel, but after one night here, you won’t want to leave. The South Beach Nikki Beach is a classic. Since it opened in 1998, the storied day club has been a destination for snowbirds looking for a proper Miami release with its beachfront location and resident DJs.

Four Seasons at the Surf Club

four seasons surf club miami

For all the children of history, the Surf Club is a mecca. Among its most famous guests were the duke and duchess of Windsor, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, the shah of Iran (OK, maybe not a selling point), and many more. The Joseph Dirand–designed hotel residences ain’t too shabby either.

Mondrian South Beach

mondrian south beach

It’s South Beach without being South Beach. Located on the Bay of Biscayne side, it’s a Marcel Wanders–designed haven from the hubbub of its oceanside neighbors, a few minutes’ car-ride to the east. It’s where you stay if you want to come home from the beach—not live at it.

Nobu Hotel at Eden Roc

nobu eden roc

The Rockwell Group took inspiration from Japanese design—neutral colors and silk cherry blossom wallcoverings—for the calming interiors of this Robert De Niro–backed ode to chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Obviously, aside from the beachfront, the culinary sitch is the main draw here.

Soho Beach House

soho beach house miami

Hoping to find Annabelle Bronstein’s membership card in the loo? Try your luck here at the Miami outpost of the buzzy British collection of private club hotels. We hope your English accent is better than Samantha Jones’s.

W South Beach

w south beach

The 400 rooms here are huge, and all come with balconies and jaw-dropping views. There are dozens of Warhols on display, and celebrity-spotting is like shooting fish in a barrel. All that before you even get to your chaise on the beach.

The Betsy Hotel

the betsy hotel

The interior design is more Savannah than Miami Beach, and the vibe is less Spring Break! and more “Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?” which makes it stand out from the competition.

The Ultimate Luxury Miami Travel Guide

Miami is full of culture, great food, and shopping, and most importantly, it has unbeatable weather. it’s no wonder that miami is a mecca for glamorous beachgoers and vacationers..

luxury travel miami

Miami is unlike any other place in the world, as it is both an important business destination and a perennial spring break (and year-round vacation) favorite. With the beach and the city at your fingertips, it’s easy to get lost in the seemingly endless choices. However, we’ve made it easy for you in our luxury Miami travel guide by rounding up the best luxury hotels to stay at, the restaurants you really shouldn’t miss, and incredible experiences to keep you busy when you’re not soaking up the sunshine.

The Best Luxury Hotels in Miami

The faena .

luxury travel miami

Argentinian hotel proprietor and real estate developer, Alan Faena, pays homage to the 1947 Saxony building — a treasured trend-setting hotel back in the day — in his Faena hotel on South Beach. A tribute to the glamorous 1950s, the decor is a lively combination of glitz and glam, with a spirited South American touch. From the moment you walk in, you are mesmerized by the vibrant colors, the chic and daring hints of animal print, and the classic Miami Art Deco aesthetic. Filmmaker Baz Lurhmann, of Moulin Rouge, and his wife, an Academy Award-winning costume designer, joined forces with Alan Faena to design the gorgeous property, and theatrical flourishes abound.

The rooms are spacious, each uniquely decorated with royal reds and decadent design. Each floor has an assigned butler who will take care of everything from making reservations to waking you up with a fresh pot of coffee. While all of the rooms are luxurious, the most sought-after overlook the crystal-clear water and seemingly endless sand of Miami Beach. If you’re traveling with a group, book the 14,507-square-foot, five-bedroom, nine-bathroom Penthouse Suite.

During the day, lounge poolside under the iconic red and white striped umbrellas and enjoy some R&R. If you want to stick around the hotel for dinner, Faena’s restaurant, Los Fuejos , is known for its incredible steak. What else would you expect from an Argentinian hotelier? After dinner, head to The Living Room for a cocktail. You just might end up dancing on the tables, but, luckily, your room is right upstairs. No matter the length of your stay, do not leave without going to the hotel’s dreamy spa, Tierra Santa Healing House . The 22,000-square-foot sanctuary houses one of the largest hammams — a Turkish steam bath — on the East Coast. The haven is much more than a run-of-the-mill luxury spa. It offers body-healing rituals and treatments created by shamans. The state-of-the-art facial treatments use quality skincare lines such as Naturopathic and Biologique Recherche. A treatment at Tierra Santa Healing House is not only for the body but also for the mind and soul.

The Setai

luxury travel miami

The Setai on Miami Beach is as posh as it gets with a rich history dating back to the 1930s. The classic Art Deco hotel sits in the heart of South Beach. Its beautiful Asian-inspired design and enormous rooms are just part of the allure. Not only is the beach — with its attentive beach attendants — right outside your window, but it offers not one, not two, but three sparkling pools.

With a five-star rating to uphold, the concierge service at The Setai is always available to make your stay seamless. The culinary offerings are impressive, too. Chef Vijay Veena brings traditional culinary techniques to Jaya , the hotel’s modern Asian fusion restaurant. You can expect delightful dishes inspired by the cuisine of Thailand, Vietnam, India, Japan, China, and Korea.

Valmont Spa at the Setai uniquely incorporates traditional Swiss medicine. Valmont skincare products are renowned worldwide for their deft blend of luxury, pioneering technology, and the finest Swiss ingredients. The spa includes four private suites that can each accommodate two guests. Each room has a private bath and steam room overlooking the ocean. All of the treatments are heavenly, and the signature facials using Valmont products are superb and deliver immediate results.

Mandarin Oriental

Mandarin Oriental Presidential Suite Balcony

Mandarin Oriental in Brickell Key has a view of both water and city, reflecting the feel of Miami. Perfectly located in between South Beach and downtown Miami, Mandarin Oriental is a perfect spot for exploring all that Miami has to offer. It’s an excellent choice for anyone traveling on business or wanting to avoid the party scene, as its location allows for a more quiet and private setting.

Mandarin Oriental has high ceilings, plush couches, and Asian-inspired decor throughout the hotel. The spacious, contemporary guest rooms have gorgeous views — each has a balcony and a stylish marble bathroom. In addition, it offers a three-level spa and fitness center, a private infinity pool, and bayside dining.

Miami Beach Edition

luxury travel miami

One of the trendiest hotels in town is the Miami Beach Edition . But don’t let that deter you. It is still sophisticated but with a more youthful, fun edge. For instance, there is an ice-skating rink and a bowling alley. Not to mention, an underground nightclub for anyone that wants to hit the dance floor.

The rooms have sleek wood finishings, which contrast nicely with the soft, neutral tones and modern design. For an upgraded experience, you may want to reserve one of the 28 private oceanfront bungalows. On the other hand, you can never go wrong staying in the over-the-top penthouse suite. World-renowned chef, Jean-Georges Vongertichten’s Matador Room fuses inventive dishes from the Caribbean with Spanish, Latin, and South American fares. Inside, there is an intimate atmosphere courtesy of dimmed, romantic lighting. The Matador Terrace has long tables, a slick bar, and is illuminated by candles and charming fairy lights. Lastly, The Matador Bar brings you back in time to the glamorous 1950s. It feels as though Marilyn Monroe could be sipping champagne at the end of the bar.

Though the 1 Hotel group has opened its doors in major cities like New York and Los Angeles, the 1 Hotel on South Beach is iconic, as it is the renowned hotel group’s first location. It has dreamy, minimalist decor with reclaimed wood elements and a serene all-white color scheme. The zen pool area has stunning ocean views, making for a great place to relax and recharge. If you feel like some movement, the hotel has a SoulCycle studio on-site as well as a top-of-the-line gym.

There are multiple dining options in the hotel, each with a signature style. Habitat , run by Chef Jose Mendin, features classic Mexican fare with a twist. Head down to the restaurant in the morning for some killer lemon ricotta buttermilk pancakes or in the evening for some sensational tacos. Health nuts will love Plnthouse for a smoothie bowl or a freshly squeezed juice post-workout. For something a bit more sophisticated, try Wave at the Beach Club. An incredible sea-to-table concept, it boasts delectable seafood and signature cocktails.

Bamford Wellness Spa at the 1 Hotel offers holistic treatments, services, and learning opportunities that stimulate the mind-body-spirit connection. If you’ve been spending too much time in the sun, the After Sun Recovery massage will soothe and nourish burned skin. Looking to indulge in a few different treatments? Check out the spa packages, like the four-hour De-Stress treatment. The combination of the Body Scrub, B Silent Treatment, Organic Facial, and a 24K Collagen Face Mask is guaranteed to help you unwind.

Miami Restaurants You Won’t Want to Miss

Cecconi’s .

luxury travel miami

Situated in the ground-floor courtyard of Soho Beach House, a hotel and members-only club on Collins Ave, Cecconi’s is excellent any time of day. It offers classic Italian fare and a sprawling wine list in a cozy, chic setting. Make yourself at home as the locals do on the couch seating and admire the sunset, lit up even more so by Edison bulb lanterns. Although the setting is exquisite, the food is what we’re here for. The all-day menu boasts great family-style plates. For example, regulars love the whole branzino, the chicken paillard, and the truffle pizza with goat cheese and zucchini blossoms.

Tucked behind lush and colorful greenery in Miami’s Art Deco District, Casa Tua offers an experience that feels like dining in a private villa in Tuscany. The restaurant is located in a historical estate with several elegant and differently styled rooms, each with a unique character. Tables in the garden are the hottest seats in Casa Tua. The chef’s table — seating up to 22 guests — is a semi-private room with a more intimate setting where you can watch the chefs prepare mouth-watering Italian dishes. The main dining room is the library, which has comfortable booth seating and showcases works from world-renowned artists. In addition, a discrete upstairs lounge is reserved for its member’s club.

Though the menu changes seasonally, you can’t go wrong with any of the pasta dishes, the burrata with heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil, or the branzino. Casa Tua also offers a raw bar featuring several types of caviar and oysters. Be sure to save room for the warm chocolate meltdown on caramelized banana and vanilla ice cream. It’s worth it.

Occupying a restored 1940s bungalow in the heart of Miami’s Design District, Mandolin Aegean Bistro is a fan favorite. It showcases incredible Mediterranean fare, but it’s not just the delicious food that will transport you to the Greek isles. The bistro is decorated with pops of blue and has beautiful foliage. Founded and run by husband and wife duo Ahmet Erkaya and Anastasia Koutsioukis, Mandolin has its own garden and on-site bakery. The menu was designed for family-style, shared plates. Some of our favorites include a sampling of the mezzes with grilled pita bread, the Greek village salad, grilled octopus, and grilled lamb chops over orzo pilaf.

luxury travel miami

KYU is Miami’s new it restaurant, and it’s almost impossible to get a reservation, so be sure to plan ahead. Located in the hip and edgy Wynwood Walls area of Miami, KYU is a slick, sophisticated Asian-fusion restaurant. Inside, you can watch the chefs busy cooking wagyu beef brisket, the ultra-popular fried chicken, and the best roasted cauliflower you’ve ever tasted (seriously). You will end up placing a second order, mark my words. The crispy tuna and hamachi tartare are crowd-pleasers, but if you’re an adventurous eater, the chef’s tasting menu showcases a fantastic selection of chef Michael Lewis’s favorite dishes. Top off your meal with the coconut cake and the dark chocolate s’mores cake with bourbon banana ice cream.

Amara at Paraiso

For dinner with a view, there’s nowhere better than Amara at Paradiso , overlooking the water from a prime spot in Edgewater. It’s the perfect spot for a sunset dinner with friends accompanied by a bottle of French white wine and a few dozen Island Creek Oysters. Not only is the ambience great and the view spectacular, but the food — prepared by award-winning chef and restaurateur Michael Schwartz — is delicious. The grouper ceviche plated in a coconut milk broth is refreshing and a great starter, along with the charred octopus. But our favorite main dish is the bone-in ribeye served with a side of grilled Japanese sweet potato. Finish it off with the dulce de leche flan and an espresso from Panther Coffee .

Things to Do When You’re Not at the Beach

luxury travel miami

Because Miami has both the beach and the city, there are countless ways to spend your time. If you’re looking to do some shopping, make your way over to the Design District. Here, a myriad of luxury shops (Gucci, Tom Ford, Dior, Louis Vuitton, to name a few) awaits you. Another area known for its luxury shopping is Bal Harbour, located at the tip-top of Miami Beach. And be sure to check out Wynwood, a centrally located arts neighborhood famous for its street murals and trendy restaurants, which have made it a popular spot to grab a bite to eat.

luxury travel miami

In addition to the hotel spas mentioned above, Miami has some other lovely spas well worth considering. For example, The Spa at The Miami Beach Edition , The Spa at the Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club , Acqualina Spa by Espa at the Acqualina Resort all offer sensational treatments.

luxury travel miami

Art aficionados make a pilgrimage to Miami Art Basel , an annual art fair that’s worth planning your trip around. The party scene that week is also wild — it’s unlike any other time of year in Miami. In addition, Miami is home to several museums of note. One of our favorites is the Pérez Art Museum — an enormous 200,000-square-foot modern art museum and one of the city’s most popular. Finally, Don and Mera Rubell have collected artwork since they got married in 1964, and they share their vast collection with Miami in the Rubell Museum . It houses one of the most extensive private contemporary art collections in all of the US.

Explore Outdoors

luxury travel miami

Itching to get out and enjoy some fresh (albeit humid) air? The Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden spans a whopping 83-acres and showcases an impressive collection of rare tropical plants. On the other hand, if you want to get out on the water, Golden Yacht Charters offers a fleet of various types of yachts to choose from.

South Beach is synonymous with here-to-be-seen nightlife and the beautiful people who flock to it. While there are too many nightspots to name, a favorite of ours with some extraordinary history is The Villa Casa Casuarina , formerly known as Gianni Versace’s Mansion. Who wouldn’t want to toast to Gianni’s legacy in the very courtyard he dined in. The Villa Casa Casuarina has its own fantastic restaurant, Gianni’s , or you can opt for Sushi by Bou — an exclusive, high-end omakase experience — all in the beautiful environs of the mansion.

For a late-night out, LIV nightclub showcases some of the most in-demand and popular performers. For example, Calvin Harris has graced the LIV stage on more than one occasion.

luxury travel miami

There is certainly a notable cocktail culture in Miami. New places are popping up in every nook and corner of the sprawling city, so the choices feel almost endless. Grabbing a cocktail at The Living Room at The Faena Hotel is always a good option. An ode to the glamorous 1950s Miami Beach, The Living Room hosts live jazz performances and serves specialty cocktails. It’s the perfect place to sink into the plush leopard-printed couch and go back in time. An up-and-coming cocktail lounge is Bar Bevy at the popular Swan restaurant in the Design District. It’s a collaboration between mogul-producer Pharell Williams and night-life legend David Grutman.

Best Luxury Hotels In DownTown Miami

We review the best luxury hotels in DownTown Miami. These include EAST Miami, Four Seasons Hotel Miami, W Miami, Mandarin Oriental Miami, SLS Lux Brickell, InterContinental Miami, Hyatt Regency Miami, Kimpton EPIC Hotel Miami, Hotel Beaux Arts, Autograph Collection, and Aman Miami.

If your hotel is situated in DownTown Miami, consider renting a car as using taxis or uber can be expensive to get to and from landmarks and Miami beach (A cab to south beach is 25 dollars for a one-way trip), and public transport in Miami is not great. That said, some hotels may charge for parking, so parking costs can cancel out savings from rentals.

1. EAST, Miami

EAST, Miami is Swire Hotels’ first venture into North America, following the openings of EAST in Hong Kong and Beijing. This superb hotel is Centrally located within a 15-minute drive from the Miami International Airport and is situated on top of Brickell City Centre. The hotel is conveniently connected to popular districts such as Wynwood, the Design District, and South Beach.

EAST, Miami offers an irresistible mix of hip venues, high-tech gadgetry, and hot shops. It takes the modern luxury concept in a decidedly cool direction. Miami’s buzzy Brickell neighborhood feeds the 352-room hotel’s intoxicating energy. At Quinto La Huella, a wood-fired parrilla turns out grass-fed Uruguayan rib eyes next to locally sourced grilled vegetables.

Take a dip in the fifth-floor pool, or head to Sugar, the Zen rooftop bar and garden for magnificent Miami views. Also, on the top floor? Tea Room, a hidden speakeasy-style lounge that will transport you to Hong Kong for the evening without ever leaving the building.

The advice from our Virtuoso travel agents is to book a Bay King room with a wraparound, east-facing balcony for views of Miami, Biscayne Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean.

2. Four Seasons Hotel Miami

Set in the vibrant area of Brickell, Four Seasons Hotel Miami is situated near Miami’s most celebrated neighborhoods and features 221 guest rooms, including 39 suites with views of Biscayne Bay and the city skyline.

The hotel boasts an award-winning steakhouse, EDGE Steak & Bar; a two-acre pool terrace with lush landscaping and private cabanas; exclusive Equinox access, offering an extensive range of fitness amenities, group classes, and spa; and a multimillion-dollar art collection throughout the hotel, featuring works by Latin American artists, paying tribute to the area’s Latin influences and culture.

Wherever you are in the world, Four Seasons hotels are consistently one of the best hotels in that city or resort. There isn’t a Four Seasons loyalty program , so you will never be able to book a free stay by racking up and redeeming points, or by collecting points on your credit card and spending them at a Four Seasons hotel. It can’t be done. But you can get discounts at Four Seasons hotels and benefit from special rewards at Four Seasons hotels for no extra cost by booking your next stay via our luxury travel concierge .

Escape to W South Beach , featuring large guest-room suites with oversize private balconies and striking ocean views. This luxury oasis is within walking distance from world-class shopping, dining, and nightlife.

Take a dip in the pool at WET or soak up the sun on the full-service beach, SAND. Fuel up at FIT, a state-of-the-art fitness center, or play tennis or basketball on the rooftop at SWISH and SWING. Detox and relax at AWAY Spa. Dine-in style at RWSB or Mr. Chow. Experience true mixology at Irma’s at the Grove or Living Room Bar.

4. Mandarin Oriental

Located on Miami’s exclusive Brickell Key, Mandarin Oriental, Miami offers sophisticated serenity in an urban resort setting. Select one of four distinctive dining experiences: Peruvian cuisine at La Mar by Gastón Acurio, cocktails with a view at MO Bar + Lounge, sushi, and light bites poolside at Oasis Pool Café and pisco punches and Peruvian tapas at YAKU by La Mar.

Luxuriate in the tri-level, 15,000-square-foot spa offering yoga, spa treatments, and soaking tubs overlooking Biscayne Bay. The hotel is ideally placed within walking distance of Brickell City Centre, with shopping, dining, entertainment, and cultural destinations.

5. SLS Lux Brickell Miami

Guests are welcomed to the SLS Lux Brickell Miami by a ceiling of digital artwork, a long green carpet, and a spiral staircase leading to the African-safari-inspired SAAM lounge.

These art installations are just some of the cool and quirky elements of this Philippe Starck-envisioned hotel, the centerpiece of Miami’s of-the-moment Brickell neighborhood. Beyond the eye-catching public spaces, the 124 rooms enhance the senses, their black and white palettes softened by pink walls. Other highlights are Fi’lia, Ciel Spa, and a rooftop deck with two pools.

6. InterContinental Miami

Built around Henry Moore’s famous sculpture, “The Spindle,” the luxury InterContinental Miami hotel lies along the DownTown waterfront, with the city’s business center and with famous beaches both within easy reach. This is usually considered the best InterContinental in Miami.

Although this is a five-star hotel, there is a lack of soundproofing, and you can hear noise from the corridor and the next-door room, which can be a problem for light sleepers. The hotel also has an extra “service fee,” a similar concept to the Resort Fee in Las Vegas. As long as you pay this mandatory $15 USD extra per day, you can use the spa, gym and get 2 bottles of water every day.

Book a Club InterContinental room and experience luxurious Miami hotel rooms along with exclusive Club amenities. These spacious rooms feature modern decor, contemporary in-room amenities, and access to the Club InterContinental Lounge. Located on the 29th floor of the InterContinental Miami hotel, the Club InterContinental Lounge offers a place to enjoy hot breakfast in the morning and hors d’oeuvres and drinks later in the evening.

Options a bit limited if you are expecting a full American breakfast. During happy hour, you can enjoy alcoholic cocktails there while taking Miami’s excellent views from floor 29.

There is a rooftop pool at this InterContinental on the third floor, which means that around noon the taller buildings surrounding the hotel start blocking the sun. There are about 40 pool chairs available next to the pool, plus a couple of daybeds that need to be booked separately. The on-site Bluewater Café is open until 10:00 pm.

The fitness center is right next to the pool, a compact gym with weight machines, a couple of treadmills, exercise bikes, and a free weights area.

7. Hotel Beaux Arts, Autograph Collection

Hotel Beaux Arts, Autograph Collection is a modern private hotel ascending 39 stories above Miami’s majestic skyline. Located in the same modern all-glass skyscraper as the JW Marriott Marquis Miami, the boutique hotel boasts innovative technology, contemporary design, an intimate setting, exclusivity, and first class services.

Recently named to Marriott’s Autograph Collection of hotels, this private retreat is replete with the finest features, including famed chef Daniel Boulud’s new Mediterranean-style restaurant Boulud Sud, Mariano Bartolome Indoor Golf School, Enliven Salon and Spa, virtual bowling, and indoor basketball court. The hotel is within minutes of Port of Miami, the AA Arena, and upscale dining. Guests are greeted and receive personalized check-in to one of 44 guest rooms and suites featuring complimentary Wi-Fi, iPad, iLLY Espresso machines with complimentary espresso, lavish bedding, and top of the line entertainment systems.

8. Kimpton EPIC Hotel Miami

The gorgeously renovated Kimpton EPIC Hotel is an excellent base camp from which to explore Miami. This glamorous, flirty city loves showing off its outdoorsy side. Miami’s tropical climate inspires alfresco activities day and night, all year long. Relax in a spacious cabana by the two sky-high pools, enjoy dinner and drinks alfresco at the Area 31 restaurant, walk barefoot on nearby hidden beaches, go kayaking and boating, or visit open-air attractions like artsy Wynwood.

9. Hyatt Regency Miami

There are two Hyatts in Miami, and neither are desperately exciting, although they are solid choices, particularly if you are a World Of Hyatt member. The Hyatt Coral Gables is a reasonable property with well-appointed rooms, some with a balcony overlooking the pool area, but if you want to stay in DownTown, choose the Hyatt Regency Miami , which can be found next to one of the trendiest neighborhoods in Miami, known as Brickell.

This DownTown Hyatt has a great location near the American Airlines Arena and has great views. The Hyatt Regency’s iconic white towers overlook the Miami River, and the hotel is connected to the James L. Knight Center. This ideal location puts you steps from the Miami Riverwalk and close to the Port of Miami. Shop the Brickell City Centre or Bayside Market Place, explore Little Havana, or tour the Frost Museum of Science.

At the time of writing, the hotel rooms here need refreshing, although the current furnishings are more than adequate. Elite members get free water bottles in the room, and the breakfast here is extensive with custom eggs & omelets. The gym and pool are adequate, but the whole hotel is next to a busy drawbridge. You can hear boats passing even up high, so if you are a light sleeper, this proximity and noise should be considered. There is also a rather disappointing Regency Club lounge at the Hyatt Regency Miami.

10. Aman Miami

Aman, one of the most exclusive luxury hotel brands in the world, is opening a hotel in South Beach in 2023. While this hotel isn’t open yet and isn’t in DownTown Miami either, we felt we had to include what will be one of the best hotels in Miami. According to the Miami Herald , the two-building Aman Miami project will include an Aman hotel and Aman-branded residences. It will be built on the Versailles Hotel’s former site at 3425 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach.

Aman currently has two US locations – Amangani in Wyoming and Amangiri in Utah and is expected to open a New York hotel in late 2020. While this hotel will not be one of the best hotels with club lounges in Miami , it will definitely be a new bucket list hotel in the sunshine state of Florida.

Miami Stays In Its Luxurious Lane Photo Courtesy of Lou La Vie

For people who appreciate luxury travel, Miami offers more than the allure of glitz and glam, sunshine and sand. From exotic vehicle rentals to awe-inspiring spas, South Florida provides an abundance of lavish experiences that will satiate your desire to live large.

Acqualina Spa by ESPA, Photo Courtesy of Acqualina Resort & Spa

For the serenity seeker Relax and unwind at Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Acqualina Spa by ESPA . The luxury spa at Five-Star Acqualina Resort & Spa is a Mediterranean retreat set on the pristine beaches of Sunny Isles. It’s the quintessential destination for those wanting a serene tropical escape. The 20,000-square-foot spa emanates pampering, starting with stunning oceanfront views from the beautiful terrace — it has a spa pool and grand amenities like a Roman waterfall and dry-heat Finnish sauna. Go all out and book an after-hours private spa experience, complete with a custom-designed treatment for two in your suite and a romantic candlelit dinner on the pool deck.

For the car enthusiast Rev up your weekend by taking a teched-out Audi or a head-turning Rolls Royce for a spin. Think “Rent the Runway” on wheels at Lou La Vie , the company that lets you borrow all the horsepower you could ever dream of. Customers can live out their full-throttled fantasies in the latest exotic roadsters and luxury car models — from the Lamborghini Aventador and Corvette Stingray convertible to the Rolls Royce Ghost — for a single day or several months.

Lou La Vie will deliver a vehicle right to you and take you for a quick test drive before tossing you the keys. In addition to premium car loans, membership specials include track rentals and exclusive VIP event access to the showroom, which doubles as an art gallery.

Bal Harbour Shops, Photo Courtesy of Bal Harbour Shops

For the elite shopper Known for its luxury stores and ambience, legendary Bal Harbour Shops is a fashionista’s mecca. Fun fact: When it opened in 1965 on what was once World War II army barracks, Bal Harbour Shops became Florida’s first exclusively high-fashion shopping center. At 45,000 square feet, the two-story, open-air mall is now home to more than 100 couture stores, including Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Hublot and Alexander McQueen.

After a day of retail therapy, indulge your gastronomic senses at an upscale eatery like Stephen Starr’s ode to sublime Japanese, Makoto , or his French brasserie, Le Zoo .

For the food and wine aficionado On the ground floor of downtown Miami’s Epic Hotel, you can actually pull up and dock at the property’s marina right in front of the restaurant Zuma . As you enter, the stellar service and dramatic décor set the stage — see expansive Japanese rice panels extending from above and floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping water views.

Chef Rainer Becker’s modern take on sophisticated Japanese cuisine is inspired by informal izakaya -style dining in which alluring takes on tataki, sashimi and robata grill items are continuously brought to the table.

Zuma is also known for its impressive wine selection — 365 varieties of wine and more than 80 sakes. Hailed as a place for celeb sightings, you might find yourself dining next to the likes of David Beckham, Will Smith or Gwyneth Paltrow.

Miami Private Tour History

Influential History

Miami’s history is an intriguing tapestry steeped in diverse cultures originating with indigenous tribes, including the Tequesta and Seminoles, founding Mayaimi’s native roots. The late 19th-century South Florida real estate boom was initiated by Julia Tuttle, the only woman to found a US city in 1896, transforming Miami into America's Riviera. Prohibition reinforced its notorious influence previously tied to pirates like Blackbeard. Following the revolution, Cubans emigrated to the area accompanied by their vibrant traditions contributing to a unique dialect, the "Miami accent". Due to its location and strength in trade, the city has the largest concentration of international banks in the US. Incorporate history into your Miami Private Tour.

Miami Private Tour Architecture

Eclectic Architecture

Miami's architectural landscape, shaped by Art Deco, Miami Modern (MiMo), and Mediterranean influences, inspired the moniker, ‘Billion Dollar Sandbar’. Post-hurricane redevelopment birthed the Art Deco movement, giving Miami Beach a historically renowned collection featuring buildings with vibrant pastels and intricate geometric motifs built between 1923-43. The ornate Mediterranean Revival style is prevalent in neighborhoods like Coral Gables, while Opa-locka has the Western Hemisphere's largest Moorish Revival collection. Affluent Coconut Grove, known as The Grove, is the oldest continuously inhabited neighborhood. Incorporate architecture into your Miami Private Tour.

Miami Private Tour Lifestyle

Authentic Lifestyle

Miamian's enjoy an active lifestyle centered around culture, sports, and the outdoors. Miami Beach is reputed as one of the worlds' most glamorous for its nightclubs, beaches, historical art deco buildings, and shopping. The Miami Open, Art Basel, the Winter Music Conference, the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, Calle Ocho Festival, and Fashion Week attract millions annually. Enjoy beach lounging or water sports, exploring the Everglades, tropical cocktails, Latin music and the Wynwood Walls outdoor graffiti museum. Four-seasons of professional sports delight fans with football, baseball, hockey and basketball, along with championship golf and tennis. Incorporate lifestyle into your Miami Private Tour.

luxury travel miami

Delectable Dining

Miami's food scene is a journey through global gastronomy, distinguishing the South Florida style as Floribbean cuisine, a unique blend of Caribbean, Latin American, European and American culinary traditions. Must-try dishes like the Cuban sandwich, ceviche, Key Lime Pie, and stone crab claws epitomize the city's delectable offerings. Recognized in 2023 as Bon Appétit's Food City Of The Year, Miami's food trucks serve everything from gourmet burgers to traditional Arepas, while celebrity chef-driven restaurants and iconic landmarks like Joe's Stone Crab and Versailles, enhance Miami's reputation as a culinary gem. Incorporate dining into your Miam Private Tour.

luxury travel miami

Natural Landscapes

Miami’s Atlantic Ocean sea-level elevation shapes its tropical monsoon climate boasting a distinctive natural environment. Everglades National Park offers a glimpse into a complex "river of grass" biosphere of mangroves and marshes, home to American alligators, Florida panthers and exotic birds. Biscayne National Park engenders snorkeling and diving opportunities to glimpse manatees, explore coral reefs, and historic shipwrecks. Identifying seashells or cruising the various waterways out to the Gulf Stream educates about the native coastal ecosystem. Miami also has over 80 urban parks, while Banyan trees, palms and live oaks line quiet residential streets. Incorporate landscapes into your Miami Private Tour.

luxury travel miami

Unforgettable Excursions

Adventures abound pre- and post-embarkation from PortMiami, the world's busiest cruise port, or flying its gateway between the US and Latin America. Seafarers enjoy deep sea fishing, soaring through the Everglades via airboat, viewing the reef from a glass bottom boat, or diving for shipwrecked pirate treasure. Discover the archipelago islands of the Florida Keys along the 113-mile Overseas Highway, each known for natural beauty, a relaxed vibe and world-class snorkeling. Accessible by luxury yachts, private jets, or scenic drives are resort towns like West Palm Beach or Bal Harbour, with Bimini the closest of the Bahamas Islands. Incorporate excursions into your Miami Private Tour.

The Formula One Miami Grand Prix 2024 features some of the world’s best racers, including Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen (who is considered the favorite to win), Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, Mercedes Team’s George Russell and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen — just to name a few.

F1 Miami Grand Prix happens at the Miami International Autodrome at the Hard Rock Stadium Complex starting on Friday, May 3 with race day on Sunday, May 5 at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. ET. Last-minute hotel bookings for the race in South Florida are still available on sites like Expedia , Hotels.com and Agoda .

Popular on Variety

Below, check out some of the best hotels to stay at for the F1 Miami Grand Prix in May.

Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino

Is the best hotel in South Florida inside of a gigantic electric guitar? We think so. Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida is the height of luxury, style and comfort, thanks to its grand design, speedy and friendly service and overall attention to detail. Located about 15 minutes away from Miami International Autodrome at Hard Rock Stadium for the F1 Miami Grand Prix, Seminole Hard Rock is a great location to stay for the race — either by Uber or the hotel’s own car service. You can also just stay-in for premium restaurants with world-class chefs and dining experiences, 24-hour room service, an impressive rock memorabilia collection, exciting and thrilling gaming options, like blackjack, slots, poker and roulette, and luxury pools with cabanas and a relaxing and top-notch spa and wellness center. The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is truly a marvel!

Another really good option is the W Miami , which is located about 21 minutes away from Miami International Autodrome. It offers spacious and premium rooms, while the hotel’s amenities are top-notch pools, a spa and gorgeous rooftop terrace. It’s also about a 5-minute walk from Brickell City Centre for luxury shopping and restaurants.

JW Marriott Miami

The JW Marriott Miami is located in Downtown Miami and serves as a easy location to get just about anywhere in South Florida. In fact, it’s about a 23-minute drive from the hotel to Miami International Autodrome for the Miami Grand Prix, which it’s also centrally located to shops, restaurants and bars in Downtown Miami. As far as amenities, the JW Marriott Miami offers a spa and wellness center, gym, swimming pool and game room with bowling, video games and even a bar.

Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort

Located about 22 minutes away from Miami International Autodrome, Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort features great views, while it’s situated at Sunny Isles Beach. If you’re planning on hitting the beach when in South Florida (and why shouldn’t you), this hotel and resort is a very good option — thanks to its cozy rooms, relaxing spa and wellness center, premium location, very friendly staff and spectaular beach experiences.

Four Seasons Hotel Miami

The Four Seasons Hotel Miami is a five-star hotel with exceptional service, rooms and amenities — including spa and wellness center, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, gym, luxury dining and around-the-clock room service. The hotel is located in Downtown Miami, which is about a 25-minute drive to Miami International Autodrome for F1 Miami Grand Prix.

Hilton Garden Inn Miami Brickell South

Although it might not be as premium as other hotels on this list, the Hilton Garden Inn Miami Brickell South does offer clean and comfort rooms that’s located in Coral Way — which is about 20 minutes away from Miami International Autodrome for F1. It offers two swimming pools (indoor, outdoor), a fitness center, a business center and even guest laundry — which is ideal if you’re traveling with kids.

Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort

Although it might be further away from Miami International Autodrome (about 35 minutes away), the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort is located on the beach for gorgeous views and Downtown Fort Lauderdale for shopping, restaurants and bars. It offers 24-hour room service, a salon and spa, two swimming pools, beach access, game room and tennis courts for a relaxing and comfortable stay.

A collage of the Hard Rock Hotel, Diana Ross performing at Carbone, and an image of the JW Marriott Turnberry

In its third year, the outrageous glitz of the Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix has only grown. For hardcore Formula fans, the sprint race run prior to the main event — a first for Miami and only one of six on this year’s F1 calendar — is a source of added excitement. But for those more interested in the revved up atmosphere than the standings of the Constructors Championship, Magic City is preparing for its best showing yet, on and off the track.

Here’s a look at the best new everything to see and do in the brightest and brashest town in America during race week, starting May 3.

Where to stay

Image of the JW Marriott Turnberry Cascata Pool

While big things are in the pipeline — an Aman, a Bulgari and a Rosewood to name a few — nothing new and worth recommending will be open by the time the lights turn green. If you were thinking of heading to your favorite 5-star inn on Miami Beach, be prepared to fork it over: it’s $2,150 for a night at the Setai , $2,563 a night at the W South Beach and don’t even try Faena — they’re out of rooms. But you didn’t want the commute up Collins Avenue anyway. Instead, target crash pads closer to the paddocks at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami Gardens, Aventura and Fort Lauderdale.

You can also book at the 685-room JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa , just 20 minutes from the track. It’s hosting an F1 pop-up, featuring a collection of race memorabilia, and some exclusive dining and spa options for race fans. It’ll set you back roughly $1,132 a night with a four-night minimum.

Where to eat

The Carbone Beach supper club exterior shows a marquis sign

Restaurants are shifting into top gear this week, so make your reservations yesterday. One of the flashiest dining experiences happening over the weekend will be Carbone Beach , a so-called “Supper Club on The Sand.” Over four nights, meals masterminded by Mario Carbone will be accompanied by surprise performances (in the years past Andrea Bocelli, Wyclef Jean and Nas have all shown up). You’ll also be in fast company; boldface names like Travis Kelce , David Beckham, LeBron James, Derek Jeter, James Cordon, Serena and Venus Williams have raised a glass here — not to mention billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Ken Griffin and Stephen Ross. It’s going down at a new waterfront venue at 22nd Street and Collins Avenue this year. Oh, did we mention that it’s $3,000 per ticket?

A painted image of the unopened Lafayette Steakhouse

You can also book a waterside table for brunch or dinner at Casadonna — a coastal Italian-inspired restaurant developed in partnership with Groot Hospitality and Tao Group Hospitality. Visualized by designer Ken Fulk, the restaurant is housed in the same Mediterranean revival building as Miami’s historic Women’s Club, within the city’s burgeoning Edgewater neighborhood. Better yet? Park your yacht for the venue’s Dock and Dine service. (Because it even F1 weekend in Miami if you’re not on a boat at some point?)

Short of that, let Michelin be your guide. New stars were just awarded, and while L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon remains the only 2-star spot in the city, three restaurants just received a star for the first time. They include: EntreNos , a contemporary hub by chefs Evan Burgess and Osmel Gonzalez in Miami Shores; Shingo , a Japanese restaurant by chef Shingo Akikuni in Coral Gables; and another Japanese nigiri favorite, Oga wa , by chef Masayuki Komatsu in the Little River area.

For something completely new, try Lafayette Steakhouse in Brickell. It’s soft opening during race week in the space formerly occupied by El Tucán (it’s now operated by Mr. Hospitality Miami, the group known for the sexy, theatrical dining rooms at Queen Miami Beach and Marion Miami). Lafayette promises prime cuts and the “glitz and glamor” “of a bygone era.”

Where to play

Image of a baseball cap from the Reserve and a woman drinking water from a bottle while taking a break from padel.

Off-track, the best place to find a F1 driver isn’t yachting Monaco or lounging at Amanpuri — it’s on the padel court. Lando Norris, George Russel, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz are just a few racers who are also active players. At last year’s race, the Williams Team took the opportunity to play at billionaire Wayne Boich’s Reverse Padel club at the Miami Seaplane Base. Now you can get in on the action at the brand new Reserve Miami Design District club. The club will be opening its courts for public bookings throughout F1 week. Score.

Where to buy

Image of a waterfront balcony at the Raleigh estate.

If you’re into cars and not into income taxes, you might consider settling down. The Miami curious should head to the sales office of the Raleigh , the city’s most anticipated real estate project. A complete overall of a 1940 Art Deco gem (formerly owned by Tommy Hilfiger) adds a new 17-story glass tower to the property. Designed by starchitect Peter Marino and developed by Michael Shvo, the tower has 40 residences serviced by that forthcoming Rosewood hotel. But it’s the penthouse that’s turning heads — and you’ll need a Max Verstappen-sized income to step inside. The roughly 13,000-square-foot, full-floor penthouse here is asking “over $150 million,” according to Shvo, who expects the project to be completed in 2026. If that’s a bit rich for you, three-bedroom residences start at $10 million. Oren and Tal Alexander’s Official brokerage will be handling sales.

Where to party

Image of the interior of the E11 club.

Singer Marc Anthony is crooning the National Anthem at the race, but that’s just the start. A-list performances are popping up everywhere. After a day at the track, head to Hard Rock Live , where Puerto Rican rapper Don Omar, and Ed Sheeren are performing. Meanwhile, DJ Kaskade is spinning at the Hard Rock’s Guitar Pool.

And of course no Magic City visit is complete without a VIP stop at LIV Miami at Fontainebleau Miami Beach . Formula 1 weekend guests can expect live performances from top DJs and renowned artists, including Black Coffee (May 2), John Summit (May 3), Bizarrap and DJ Khaled (May 4).

Downtown at E11even Miami , the “ultra-club” is expecting its second biggest weekend of the year (after Art Basel) — “this is when Europeans come and drop $50,000 on a table,” an insider tells us. On May 3, 50 Cent is kicking the late-night party, followed by Afrojack on May 5. The club is even offering a $111,000  “Winner’s Circle” package, which comes with four nights at the Gabriel Hotel, dinner for 11 guests at the Giselle rooftop restaurant and that $50,000 table. That’s one way to empty your tank.

Luxury Airbnb High-Rises Are Reshaping Miami’s Skyline

Image may contain Architecture Building Penthouse Desk Furniture Table Chair Balcony Bed Indoors and Living Room

West Eleventh residences, a luxury building in downtown Miami slated to break ground this summer, promises “endless indulgences.” It will feature an entertainment center, food hall, and a resort pool with private lounges—no amenity is spared. But these condos are designed to lure more than just Miami residents. The tower is part of a new trend in which developers build apartments made for Airbnb , allowing them to be rented 365 days a year. The project even boasts the short-term rental platform as a branding partner.

The concept of an apartment complex built for Airbnb appears to have won over investors: West Eleventh’s 659 units are nearly sold out, at an average price of about $800,000, says Ryan Shear, managing partner with Property Markets Group, the tower’s developer. Buyers can choose to live there full-time, but their condo fees pay for a concierge who handles the logistics of renting their units out for short-term stays on Airbnb, from check-in to cleaning.

Miami is ground zero for a new experiment in urban development catalyzed by Airbnb. More than 10 condo buildings are in development or already open in the city that, like West Eleventh, will offer sleek apartments designed to be easy for owners to rent for short-term stays either occasionally or full-time. A January report from ISG World, a Florida-based luxury real estate firm, shows nearly 8,000 units that could become short-term rentals slated for construction for downtown neighborhoods in Miami. The developers aim to enable hosting without the grunt work—and passive rental income that truly doesn’t require a property owner to lift a finger.

For travelers the resulting package may sound like a familiar concept: the hotel. But it marks a push into a new type of stay for Airbnb. The platform started as an affordable way for travelers to stay in spare bedrooms, but it developed into a neighborhood-transforming behemoth stuffed with sleek, whole-home rentals decked out to draw luxury travelers, spring breakers, and bachelorette parties.

That’s been great for Airbnb’s bottom line, but it angered many locals, who complain about rising home and rent prices as well as trash, noise, and dangerous parties the guests can sometimes bring. These downtown Miami buildings—an experiment in a new type of almost-hotel—are underway as cities around the world look to restrict short-term rentals to combat rising housing costs. They could perhaps offer a way around regulations that have blocked short-term rentals and their hosts in some places, and create new types of properties for guests, rather than eating away at the current housing supply. But in this untested experiment, some housing experts say it’s possible built-for-Airbnb developments could also end up reducing the supply of new housing for long-term residents.

Jesse Stein, Airbnb’s global head of real estate, says the company doesn’t see these developments as a reversal of the type of unique stays that come from checking in with a host instead of a concierge. “You’re still staying with a host,” says Stein. “We don’t view it as a hotel. We still view it as an individual home.”

Stein says the fact that purpose-built Airbnb condos have sold quickly shows how many people want the opportunity to become short-term rental hosts. “This proved the concept that there is tremendous demand for a flexible lifestyle,” he says. More hosts means more bookings and fees for Airbnb, which is trying to sustain its growth and reported 2023 revenue was up 17 percent over the year before.

The short-term rental business is already booming in Miami, helping to make the city a testing ground for new ideas like the Airbnb towers. It’s home to the fourth-fastest-growing market for Airbnb in the US, according to AirDNA , which tracks the short-term rental platform. Winters with perfect summer weather and burgeoning art and tech scenes provide plenty of reasons to visit. Living in Miami part-time has always been common for snowbirds, and the city also has lots of real estate investors from Latin America and Europe.

Developers are racing to hone and own the concept of built-for-Airbnb towers, with a glut of short-term rentals already selling units or preparing to enter the market in Miami in the next few years. There’s The Rider at Wynwood , a 146-unit rock-and-roll-themed condo development, which would allow owners to list their apartments for short-term rentals without restrictions. The units are on sale for $600,000 to $1.8 million.

Scattered throughout downtown Miami and neighborhoods around it are other plans for developments, including the Elser Hotel and Residences , NoMad , Smart Brickell , Domus Brickell Park , and The Crosby . There’s also District 225 , another project Airbnb has partnered with that has also sold out, which offers a resort-style pool, a bar, and coworking space.

Harvey Hernandez, a founder and CEO of Newgard Development Group, the developer behind two projects in Miami, says these condos provide a better option for investors than buying conventional apartments or single-family homes to rent short-term, which can be complicated by nosey neighbors or strict condo rules.

One of his projects, called Natiivo Miami , is due to open this summer. The building’s 440 apartments sold out more than three years ago at an average price of $800,000, Hernandez says. Marketing materials promote the flexibility of being able to use the condos for short-term rentals, calling them a vision “of what it means to live on your terms. To live free.” These buildings don’t have a partnership with Airbnb, but they are offering similar flexibility in renting on short-term platforms.

Hernandez has opened a Natiivo in Austin and is selling units for another planned in nearby Fort Lauderdale. He has another Miami project underway, the sold-out Lofty Brickell, that will feature luxury short-term rental-friendly units at higher prices. He sees this as a concept that can work outside of Miami, too, calling it a “new trend in the marketplace, of people owning assets that they can monetize.”

“Everyone wants to buy a place, own it, and have someone else pay for it,” Hernandez says. The Austin condos, which already opened, are listed on Airbnb for as much as $1,000 for a weekend stay in a two-bedroom apartment.

Airbnb has been dogged for years by claims that it is contributing to increasing housing costs. It’s unclear whether building apartment blocks to serve the platform will feed such claims. The projects could be seen as a pressure valve that diverts some investors away from eating into the housing supply by converting full-time housing into short-term rentals. But they also arguably could pull investment that could be used to build new year-round housing. “Is it potentially exacerbating housing affordability issues if those developers are catering to short-term rentals when they otherwise would be building housing for locals?” says Mark Thibodeau, a professor of real estate at Florida International University. “That’s an argument that is potentially worthwhile to consider. The opportunity cost of building short-term rentals might be housing for long-term residents.”

Another open question is whether there will be demand to fill these buildings with out-of-town guests. If most or all apartments in the Miami projects are listed for short-term renting, thousands of new vacancies will come online. Short-term rentals in Miami are generally occupied 57 percent of the time, according to AirDNA , with an average daily rate of $282—data that suggests a flood of premium apartments might not be hosting renters 365 days a year, even if the building allows for it.

“It is untested—basically, you buy a large hotel room,” says Eli Beracha, professor and director of the Tibor and Sheila Hollo School of Real Estate at Florida International University. Plus, the city could always change rules around rentals. “People need to be aware that some of those projects, even though they’re designed for Airbnb and approved for Airbnb, some of the rules can change.”

That’s what happened to some New York Airbnb hosts. For years, they listed properties, and even purchased some of them, with the idea of getting passive short-term rental income. But the city cracked down on these rentals —many of which were illegal under a long-standing but rarely enforced law—leaving people without the option to host. New York City enacted a law last year with such strict parameters for short-term rentals that it immediately knocked some 15,000 off of Airbnb’s site.

Even though the results from Miami's experiment in Airbnb buildings aren't in yet, similar projects are already popping up elsewhere. Stein says Airbnb is also working with a developer in Hawaii for a similar flexible living and short-term rental listing condo project. But the test for this idea comes as more of the buildings open for guests.

“We’re still in the pilot stage of this,” Stein says. “We aren’t even in the top of the first inning, we are still in warmups.”

How to visit Miami on a budget

Priscilla Blossom

Apr 27, 2024 • 8 min read

luxury travel miami

If you don't have far to travel, Citi Bikes can be a great way to see the sights in Miami while keeping costs down © lazyllama/ Shutterstock

With its ever-growing skyline and mansion-laden private islands, Miami can come across as a playground for the rich. But does it really require a hefty bankroll? It just depends on what kind of vacation you're looking for.

Sure, you can spring for the Fontainebleau at $400 a night, but you can just as easily find a SoBe hostel or even a standard hotel room for a fraction of that price. And while there are plenty of James Beard Award-winning restaurants to choose from, some of the city's top dining experiences can be enjoyed for $20 or less.

Budget-conscious travelers can also get around Miami without going broke and still have a great time. There are several public transit options available to those with a smidge of patience, and they offer the chance to people-watch and get a glimpse of a Miami that most tourists don't even notice. And when it comes to free experiences, the city is chock-full of them if you know where to look.

Here's how to enjoy Miami on a budget.

Daily Costs in Miami

  • Hostel room: $30–90
  • Basic room for two: $150–300+
  • Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): $80–200+
  • Public transit ticket: $2.25
  • Cafe con leche: $2–4
  • Sandwich: $15
  • Dinner for two: $40–60
  • Beer at the bar: $8

Average daily cost: $175

An arial view of Miami Beach in June, with dark gray rain clouds looming in the sky

Plan to visit in peak hurricane season if you can

If your vacation time is flexible and you're feeling brave, lucky or both, consider looking for flights in August or September. While hurricane season starts up in June, it really takes off during this period. Coupled with the return of the school year, the intense heat (August is especially roasty) and the near-daily afternoon showers, it's also the cheapest time to visit Miami. The good thing is that hurricanes don't just appear overnight. If one does make its way to the city, you'll have time to make alternative plans.

Also, be aware that even when Miami is shown in the trajectory of a hurricane, by the time it finally reaches the city, it's often much weaker than initially anticipated. This means you might just experience a full day of high winds and rain but not a full-on hurricane, with the bonus being that the weather is generally quite pleasant (cool, dry and sunny) post-storm.

Find out the best time to visit Miami for your perfect vacation

Shop around for your flight (MIA isn't always the cheapest)

Booking your flight as early as possible is always recommended, but that's not the only way to save. While Miami International Airport (MIA) has plenty of flight options, it can actually be pricier than the next closest airport: Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL). Yes, it's a bit of a hike from Miami, but it's always wise to keep an eye on flights for both airports.

Bonus: the Tri-Rail is accessible from FLL, which you can use to get down to Miami if you've opted against renting a car.

Orange-and-green trolley buses are waiting to pick up passengers at Brickell Trolley Bus Station in Miami

Use free public transit options when available

As a major commuter town, Miami is best-traversed from the comfort of a rental car. However, if you're not looking to wander too far from your hotel or hostel, you might be able to get away with using public transit. Moreover, Miami has several free public transit options to choose from (and the rest are relatively low-cost as well).

City of Miami Trolleys run in a variety of Miami neighborhoods, including Wynwood, Coconut Grove, Little Havana and Allapattah. Other areas of Miami-Dade run their own free trolleys, from Miami Beach to Coral Gables.

If you find yourself downtown, the cheapest way to get around is undoubtedly the totally free-of-charge Metromover . It's slower-moving than the Metrorail (the city's somewhat limited but still-useful train option), but it can give you some excellent views of the city and Biscayne Bay. You can take it anywhere from the Adrienne Arsht Center to Museum Park (home to the Pérez Art Museum Miami and Frost Museum of Science ), Bayside Marketplace to Bayfront Park , and as far south as Brickell (home to plenty of high rises, restaurants and bars).

Want to explore further? Take the Metrorail and head south to Coconut Grove (you'll need to transfer to a bus or Uber to get close to the shops and restaurants); South Miami or Dadeland (another popular shopping center); or north to Allapattah, a historically lower-income neighborhood currently seeing a bit of a gentrification-based renaissance and now home to attractions like Superblue and the Rubell Family Art Collection .

Hit the ground running with our Miami transportation guide

Rent or borrow a bike to get around

While Miami is not known for its huge biking culture, it's still a solid way to get around a smaller neighborhood. And don't worry, you don't have to bring your bike along with you.

Citi Bikes are the local rent-a-bike option. They're readily available all across Miami Beach and all along the coast on the mainland from Little River down through Wynwood, Downtown, Brickell and to Coconut Grove. At $7.95 per hour (or $24 per day), it's a relatively inexpensive way to see the city up close, sans parking headaches.

Oh, and finally, check if your hotel has a bike-borrowing system – you'd be surprised how many offer this as an amenity.

Skip the ocean view hotel rooms

Sure, an ocean-view room can be worth it, but is it always necessary? Clearly not. And if you're on a tighter budget, you'll likely want to shop around and stay at either a hostel or a smaller boutique hotel. Any hotel with ocean (or skyline) views will generally upcharge anywhere from $30–80 for the scenic outlook. Save that money for Miami's other attractions. You can always try to book a hotel that has rooftop access so you can still snag some great views (and great selfies) without the extra cost.

People are sitting on or walking up the stairs of the Pérez Art Museum in Miami

Take advantage of free museum days

Miami is home to a plethora of museums, and over the years, they have become increasingly accessible and affordable. The Pérez Art Museum, Gold Coast Railroad Museum , The Wolfsonian  and The Bass are just some of the museums offering free days at least once a month.

If your travel dates don't align, there are plenty of other museums that are free year-round, including the Institute of Contemporary Art , the Frost Art Museum and the Lowe Art Museum . Travelers with disabilities can also enjoy certain museums free of charge, from HistoryMiami to MOCA NoMi (with free sensory days once a month at the Miami Children's Museum ).

Grab any necessities at your nearest grocery store

Pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS are a dime a dozen in Miami, but beware of those located in touristy areas like South Beach , as their prices tend to be higher. So where can you go to get a better deal? No doubt you've heard the locals sing the praises of Publix. Find your nearest store for lower prices on necessities including deodorant, sunscreen and toothpaste. Depending on where you are in town, you can also pop into Sedanos or Winn-Dixie for even better prices.

Venture into your nearest Latin food-by-the-pound spot...

Of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention where to get cheap eats in the Magic City. While you might want to flex your credit card for a night at one of the city's many award-winning restaurants, you can still eat well without going broke at the nearest Latin food-by-the-pound restaurant. Don't be confused by the name, though; these places aren't always weighing your food. What they are doing is loading up a styrofoam container to the brim with all sorts of yummy goodness – the kind that's also excellent reheated.

Get your fill of Cuban cuisine like arroz con pollo (chicken and rice) at Palacio de los Jugos , or venture into a Nicaraguan eatery called a fritanga to taste delicious gallo pinto (a rice and beans dish), carne asada (grilled marinated steak) and fried cheese.

A street-food stand has many metal containers filled with different Latin foods such and empanadas and rice dishes

...or pick up legit Latin food from a street vendor

If you're looking for something a little less dense, you can always check out local street food vendors to see what cheap, tasty treats they've got. Yes, some food trucks nowadays sell fusion foods that are pricier than you might expect, but many remain reasonably priced. El Bori  is a food truck serving up delightful Puerto Rican bites like empanadillas (turnovers), cheese dogs and alcapurrias (fritters) for under $10. Smaller food carts selling Colombian arepas de choclo (sweet corn cakes) are often a staple at tourist hot spots and local events, and you can usually grab something yummy for around $5.

Seek out free festivals, art crawls and more

The party is always on somewhere in Miami and, more often than not, you won't even have to pay. If you're on the beach and seeking cheap nighttime activities, check out the Miami Beach Culture Crawl on the third Thursday of the month. It features different activities each month, from backstage tours to exhibition openings and more. Viernes Culturales in the Little Havana neighborhood is another arts and culture crawl where you can check out vendors, dance to live music and really get a taste of Cuban-American cultura . Speaking of which, Calle Ocho , which takes place every March, is one of the largest music festivals in town, and it's free of charge.

Music lovers should also be aware of the WALLCAST Concerts and the  SoundScape Cinema Series staged just outside of the New World Symphony . And don't forget all the farmers markets, author events at places such as Books & Books , and more totally free events going on year-round.
