Majestic Princess Itineraries

Majestic princess review, review of majestic princess.

The 2017-built Majestic Princess cruise ship is the 3rd Royal-class vessel in the Princess Cruises fleet, together with the fleet mates Royal Princess (2013), Regal Princess (2014), Sky Princess (2019), Enchanted Princess (2021) and Discovery Princess (2022). From the same class is also the P&O UK ship Britannia (2015).

The vessel (IMO number 9614141) is currently UK- flagged (MMSI 232002990) and registered in Southampton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Majestic Princess cruise ship

The 3560-passenger ship Majestic Princess is among the largest liners. The liner carries the Chinese name - Sheng Shigrave; Gong Zhu Hao on its hull, chosen by Carnival Corporation's Chinese employees. It is translated as “Grand World” (or “Grand Spirit”).

Signature features of sister-ships Regal and Royal include multiple dining venues; cantilevered SkyWalk; multi-story atrium; outdoor cinema Movies Under the Stars; adults-only Sanctuary complex. Tai Chi at sea, ballroom dancing, Chinese satellite TV channels and subtitled Hollywood movies are among the Chinese experiences of “Princess Class”, rolled out to the local cruise market.

Princess Cruises announced on February 8, 2016, on Chinese New Year, that its first cruise ship designed and built specifically for the China market, Majestic Princess (盛世公主号), is also the fleet's first vessel with the company's new livery design.

Also on February 8, 2016, the new ship reached a significant construction milestone when Majestic Princess “floated out” in its building dock at Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. The ship met the ocean for the first time and the occasion was marked by a traditional ceremony.

Majestic Princess was scheduled for delivery on April 4, 2017, in Civitavecchia-Rome . The ship (homeported in Shanghai China ) offers many of the same special features as Regal Princess and Royal Princess . Among those are a multistory atrium serving as a social hub; a top-deck glass-bottomed over-the-ocean SeaWalk (extending 28ft beyond the ship's edge), Princess Live! (interactive studio), Chef’s Table Lumiere (private dining room).

Majestic Princess has new venues created specifically for China's cruising market.

Decks and Cabins

Majestic Princess staterooms (1780 total, in 38 categories) include 350 Suites, 1088 Balcony and 342 Inside cabins, in 38 categories. The ship has no Oceanview cabins. Most outside accommodations (1438) have private step-out balconies. The ship also has 36 wheelchair-accessible cabins. The largest are the Balcony Suites (470 ft2 / 44 m2 plus 210 ft2 / 20 m2 terrace).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

There are many for-fee dining options onboard Majestic Princess, but guests who would rather not pay are offered enough quality and variety to satisfy. Those who prefer tradition can choose between the three main dining rooms.

Princess Cruises new ship design (Lido restaurant)

World Fresh Marketplace is the buffet option, providing a more casual vibe. Passengers who want to have lunch in their swimsuits can take a burger from Trident Grill or a slice at Prego Pizzeria. Indoors, Alfredo's features delicious calzones, salads and thin-crust pizza.

Majestic Princess boasts two new restaurant concepts - "Harmony" and "La Mer" (Bistro Sur La Mer/in 2023 replaced with "The Catch by Rudi").

Harmony is a modern specialty restaurant with a sophisticated Chinese dinner menu by Michelin-star chef Richard Chen.

Itineraries

Majestic Princess itinerary program was initially based on year-round Asian cruises - from China to Japan and South Korea, with roundtrip departures from homeport Shanghai China .

Following the Coronavirus crisis in 2020, for season 2021-2022 Majestic Princess cruises along the US West Coast (California) and Mexico Riviera with 7-day roundtrip itineraries from homeport Los Angeles .

In 2018, the ship had scheduled two 14-day Grand Asia cruises between Shanghai and Singapore . Available to both Chinese and international cruise tourists, these 2018 itineraries visit South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Japan, including a late-night visit to Hong Kong . The first cruise departs Shanghai on February 25, the second departs Singapore on March 11.

During season 2018-2019 (September 2018 through March 2019), the ship was homeported in Sydney NSW Australia . This made it the ever-largest Princess vessel to operate on the Australia-New Zealand market. After the Australian deployment, the ship returned to China. During the inaugural Australian season, Majestic Princess had scheduled a total of 16 itineraries to South Pacific Island destinations (Fiji, NZ, Tasmania), plus 2 repositioning cruises - southbound (Shanghai to Sydney) and northbound (Sydney to Hong Kong).

In 2018 (April through July) the ship was homeported in Keelung Taiwan for 3-4-night roundtrips (short breaks and longer itineraries) to ports in Japan and China. Following the Taiwan-based program, the liner returned to Shanghai, and then was deployed in Australia (September 2018 through March 2019).

For winter season 2024-2025, the ship was slated to debut in the Caribbean (14-day roundtrips from Fort Lauderdale Florida USA /Jan-Feb 2025). Prior to the Caribbean deployment (Dec 2024-Jan 2025) were scheduled several voyages around South America - leaving from Los Angeles, visiting ports in Mexico, Panama, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and ending in Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale.

Majestic Princess Wiki

The vessel's powerplant includes four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 46F, 2x 12V and 2x 14V) with combined power output 62,4 MW (83,700 hp). The propulsion system is based on two azipods with combined power output 18 MW (24,000 hp).

The ship has Fincantieri Monfalcone yard/hull number 6232, volume 144216 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 11277 tons, LOA length 330 m, beam 38 m (max width 47 m/including the Navigation Bridge's wings), max draught 8,6 m.

Fun facts: It takes 3 million man-hours to build a Royal-class liner. For its construction are used 37,000 tons of steel. For instance, about 12,000 tons of steel were used for constructing the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles . The paint used for the vessel is 95,000 gallons (360,000 L), which is two times more than the quantity consumed for Golden Gate Bridge (re-painted annually). The electrical cables wiring the whole vessel are long 2484 ml (4000 km) which is enough to link NYC with LA .

After Ovation of the Seas ( Royal Caribbean ), Majestic is the world's second cruise vessel specifically designed for Chinese passengers. It even has an alternative name in Mandarin - "Sheng Shigrave; Gong Zhu Hao" (meaning "Grand Spirit").

On July 10, 2015, was held vessel's keel-laying ceremony at Fincantieri's Monfalcone shipyard . With the first keel block laid officially started the construction. The liner was delivered on March 29, 2017. The ceremony was attended by Micky Arison ( Carnival Corporation 's Chairman), Arnold Donald (Carnival Corporation's CEO), Stein Kruse ( Holland America 's CEO), Jan Swartz (Princess Cruises and Carnival Australia's President). Giampiero Massolo (Fincantieri's Chairman) and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri's CEO). It was mentioned at the delivery ceremony that between 1990-2017, Fincantieri has built 77 cruise ships (of which 54 between 2002-2017), plus other 30 vessels under construction .

On November 3, 2016, the sistership's construction officially started with the steel cutting ceremony at Fincantieri's shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia . Fun fact is that in the period 1990-2016, Fincantieri constructed a total of 101 cruise ships.

On May 25, 2017, started the 37-day long relocation cruise from Europe to China (Civitavecchia-Rome to Shanghai via Suez Canal ). The voyage featured the cultural exchange program "Telling the Chinese Story along the Silk Road Sea Route". The repositioning cruise featured numerous themed onboard events and live performances, among which were the "Ansai Youth Waist Drum" and "Luochuan Youth Yangge Dance" teams, "China National Orchestra", "China National Opera And Dance Drama Theater". This absolutely unique onboard enrichment program was enjoyed all the way to China by the ship's lucky 6500+ passengers. Along the reposition itinerary, the ship called at a total of 22 "Silk Road" ports in Greece, Egypt, UAE, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China (Xiamen was the ever first Chinese cruise port visited), Taiwan, Japan, South Korea. For the list of ports of call see in the "inaugural cruise itineraries" tables that follow.

On July 9, 2017, in Shanghai China was held the vessel's christening ceremony lead by the Chinese godparents Yao Ming (Houston Rockets' basketball legend) and his wife - Ye Li. Yao Ming is an 8-time NBA All-Star with Houston Rockets and inductee into NBA Hall of Fame. The godfather-godmother couple established "The Yao Foundation" following the 2008 earthquake that devastated China's Sichuan Province. The organization built a total of 23 primary schools in the region and also extends sports education to the region's youth through basketball-related projects. The ship's naming ceremony was attended by Wang Hong (Baoshan District's party secretary and Shanghai International Cruise Business Institute's general director), Arnold Donald; (Carnival Corporation's President and CEO), Jan Swartz (Princess Cruises' and Carnival Australia's group president), as well as Chinese travel agent partners and Chinese media representatives.

Princess Cruises Royal-Class ship design

Majestic Princess' Asian itinerary program (from homeport Shanghai) started on July 11, 2017. In 2018, the liner had scheduled two 14-day "Grand Asia" itineraries between Shanghai and Singapore . Both cruises visit ports in Korea, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, with longer port times. The first "Grand Asia" cruise departs from Shanghai on February 25, 2018. The 2nd "Grand Asia" voyage leaves from Singapore on March 11, 2018.

Managed by Costa Asia, Majestic Princess passengers of Chinese origin were able to use their Alipay accounts to pay for onboard services and products. The 2017-signed partnership between Carnival Corporation and Ant Financial Services Group (subsidiary of Alibaba/China's biggest online trading company) enables Chinese cruise passengers on all Carnival Corp ships in Asia to use the Alipay mobile payment platform for onboard services and products (shopping, tours/excursions, food, drinks, etc). These expenditures are added to the passenger's cabin folio, then cleared via his/her Alipay account on a nightly basis.

"Love Boat" cruise 2022

On November 4, 2021, was announced "The Love Boat"-themed cruise on Majestic Princess scheduled for 2022-Q1.

The 7-day roundtrip from Los Angeles/San Pedro (February 26 thru March 5) visits three Mexican Riviera ports - Puerto Vallarta , Mazatlan , Cabo San Lucas .

Hosted by Jill Whelan (1968-born American actress who played "Vicki Stubing"/Captain's daughter in the TV series), the voyage will also feature as special guests The Love Boat actors Cynthia Lauren Tewes ("Julie McCoy"/Cruise Director), Bernie Kopell ("Adam Bricker"/aka "Doc"/Cruise Ship Doctor), Fred Grandy ("Burl Smith"/aka "Gopher"/Reception Purser) and Ted Lange ("Isaac Washington"/aka "Isaac"/Bartender).

The voyage will be a tribute to Gavin MacLeod (1931-2021) who played "Captain Merrill Stubing" (in the series) and served as Princess Cruises' brand ambassador in the period 1986-2021.

Onboard special activities include:

  • Sailaway party, 1970s-themed Disco Party (on pool deck), vows renewal /group ceremony (on top-deck)
  • Q&A sessions, cast photos, trivia games, themed merchandise
  • Birthday celebration honoring Gavin MacLeod
  • "Love Boat" themed dining menus and cocktails
  • "The Love Boat" episodes (at the outdoor theater and on all cabin TVs)

Inaugural itineraries 2017

In October 2015 was officially announced, that the Princess Majestic ship would be deployed in Asia. After its launch in 2017, the ship operated a series of Spring 2017 Mediterranean cruises, then was repositioned from Europe to Asia via Suez Canal . The cruise ship was based in China for year-round roundtrip itineraries from homeport Shanghai, China . During summer the ship operates on roundtrip Australia-New Zealand and South Pacific Islands cruises from homeport Sydney AU , with Australia-Asia relocation cruises.

Majestic Princess cruise itineraries include ports in Japan (Yokohama, Nagasaki, Kobe) and South Korea (Busan) and Hong Kong (China). In January 2017, the vessel successfully completed sea trials off Italy's coast.

The "Inaugural Cruise" (maiden voyage) started on April 4, 2017. The 5-night Adriatic Sea itinerary left out of Venice to Civitavecchia-Rome. The ship operates on 7-, 14-, 21- and 28-night long Mediterranean Sea itineraries departing from the ports of Barcelona Spain, Piraeus (Athens) Greece and Rome Italy, before the relocation to Asia through Suez Canal.

  • April 4 ("Inaugural Cruise") - the 5-day Maiden Voyage is a round-trip out of Rome (port Civitavecchia) visiting Kotor (Montenegro) and Corfu (Greece).
  • The ship's 2017 cruises in Europe (between April 9 and May 14, 2017) were available for booking on December 3, 2015.
  • The other two largest Princess ships Royal and Regal were also deployed in Europe in 2017, respectively, in the Mediterranean Sea (Royal) and Baltic Sea (Regal).

Fun fact is that this Princess ship has a namesake - the 2013-launched "Majestic MAERSK". The vessel is among the world's largest container ships (capacity 18,340 containers) and operated by MAERSK Line.

The following tables show the ship's Inaugural cruise itineraries with call ports, port times and USD prices per person (based on double occupancy inside cabin).

Majestic Princess activities 2023 daily schedule onboard + entertainment

Below is the Princess Patter (aka daily schedule of Princess cruise activities ) from 3 days of a 7-day cruise on the Majestic Princess in 2023.

Every cruise on the Majestic Princess and every other Princess cruise ship has onboard activities led by the entertainment team.

Below will show you an example of an entertainment schedule of onboard activities on the Majestic Princess!

Of course, your cruise may (will!) vary, but this is just to give you an idea of what kinds of things you can expect, what time you may be able to expect certain activities, and more!

Onboard activities offered on sea days will be different from port days.

Because you will be on a cruise ship all day long, sea days will have more activities throughout the day!

Because most people tend to get off the cruise ship on port days, there will be less activities offered while the cruise ship is in port.

But as soon as the Majestic Princess has started sailing, you can expect entertainment activities to get started!

You can stay on the cruise ship during port days if you want. It’s not required to get off.

The daily schedule of Majestic Princess activities

When you are on the Majestic Princess, you will get a daily activities schedule every day.

On the day you get on the Majestic Princess, it will be in your cabin when you arrive.

princess cruise activities schedule on embarkation day

More of inside a Princess cruise ship cabin: cruise ship bathroom

For the rest of the days of the cruise, a paper version of the schedule will be delivered to you every evening by your stateroom steward (aka housekeeping person).

This daily activities schedule used to officially be called the Princess Patter, although nowadays it’s simply a schedule of “Princess event listings.”

princess cruise daily activities

Also on the daily schedule of cruise activities you will find the hours of things around the ship.

The hours of certain things may change based on whether the Majestic Princess is at sea or in port.

The hours are on the back of the Princess Patter.

More about a Princess cruise:

  • Princess cruise food in the dining room
  • Princess cruise wifi

Journeyview on the Princess app

Another way you can see what’s going on around the Majestic Princess is by using your Princess app.

The Princess app can be useful for a number of things, and one of those things is to see the onboard activities schedule!

On the Princess app, the onboard cruise activities will be under “journeyview.”

You may be able to start to see this before you even get on the cruise ship.

While you can look at it before you get on the cruise ship to start to give you an idea, it’s very likely that what you see before you get on the cruise ship in journeyview is not completely updated.

So just keep that in mind.

And if you don’t see something listed that you believe is an activity during every cruise, it could just be that it hasn’t been added yet.

The cruise activities can change even during the cruise, so you can expect that it’s very possible that it can change if you’re looking at it before the cruise.

princess cruise ship activities on journeyview

Bookmarking activities on the Princess app

If you are starting to see cruise activities listed in journeyview, you may notice that it appears that events are “filling up.”

It’s possible to “bookmark” an activity.

But that is all it is.

It is a “bookmark” for your reference.

majestic princess onboard activities reservation

An event that appears to be filling up just means that many people have shown interest in the activity and have bookmarked it.

It does not mean people are making reservations.

That is not how you make a reservation for any of the activities.

And in fact, you don’t need to make a reservation to attend most activities on a cruise ship.

There may be very special circumstances in which you do need to do something in advance for very special activities, but this is not normal.

In general, even if you see on the Princess app that an event is “full,” you can still show up.

Likewise, you do not need to bookmark an event in order to show up to an activity.

More below for the day-by-day schedule of cruise activities of the Majestic Princess!

Majestic Princess activities schedule

This is a Majestic Princess daily activity schedule from May 2023.

There’s embarkation day, a sea day, and a port day.

No 2 cruises will be the same!

While your cruise will be different, you can also make note of the hours in port and hours or various activities around the cruise ship.

I don't understand why people join a long queue to embark a ship, esp in the rain.  There are lots of nice cafes nearby to have a drink and rest until the queue gets smaller.

The buffet, the buffet, all you can stuff yourself with, hehehe 😋

She sure is in Sydney, but not for long.

The queue was shorter at the front, and we were in the dining room just after noon.

First day in port for the season means delays via border force. Boarding started just after noon and all were aboard by 4. Check-in is rapid now that covid is out of the way.

Just backing-out now. Time to be cruising!!

Thanks Chez,

We will have to compare notes vs Brilliance.

We'll be on the Majestic on Tuesday and have a few questions please.

Do they have Australian power points or do we need to bring adapters?

Is the inside temperature cool? I'm just starting to pack today and not sure what to pack. We've found HAL's ship's dining rooms to be on the cool side.

Someone's who been on a longer cruise may know this. Does Princess still have designated formal/dressy nights?

Thanks for any information and enjoy your cruise 😃

Does Princess still have designated formal/dressy nights?  Yes. As a guide, a 7 day cruise has 2 formal nights. Not everyone dresses to impress. Thanks for any information and enjoy your cruise 😃

Around 11. We only did that to make sure we were under cover if it rained. Check-in was advertised as open at 1pm, so we hadn't complaints in waiting. It was much easier than the first of season last year.

We had a great view from 6Head at The Rocks, watching and gazing, waiting to join on Tuesday for a back to back. Thank you Sydney for a lovely hospitality while we're here!

Outlets vary by cabin type. Each cabin will have a single Aussie outlet, plus a minimum of 2 x USB-A sockets. There are also US & Euro socjets, so if you have a pon adaptor, you gain an extra outlet.

The inside temperature is pretty neutral.

Princess still has formal nights. You should get two, with the 2nd one also having a white & gold theme.

Kyiv under attack, mayor says

For the first time since September, Ukraine’s capital has been the target of a Russian attack.

Kyiv came under air attack this morning and big explosions were heard, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

There was no immediate information on if there were any casualties.

Strong explosions were heard on in the left bank of the capital. Preliminary, air defence was working against ballistic (missiles).

Air alerts for Kyiv and a nearby region were announced just minutes before the explosions were heard. City authorities urged residents to stay in shelters.

Closing summary

That’s all from today’s shorter-than-usual Ukraine live blog.

Here is a summary of the day’s main events so far:

Blasts were reported across Kyiv on Saturday morning, as the city came under Russian attack for the first time since September

A former Nato secretary general has put forward a proposal for Ukraine to join the military alliance but stripped of the territories occupied by Russia

The UK’s Ministry of Defence says Russia is ramping up its attempt to weaponise history

Trains carrying cargo in Russia’s Ryazan region were derailed Saturday morning due to “unauthorised interference”

Russian train derails after ‘unauthorised interference’

Trains carrying cargo in Russia’s Ryazan region were derailed on Saturday morning because of “unauthorised interference”, the Associated Press reported Moscow’s rail operator MZhD as saying.

Russian law enforcement said 15 train carriages had been derailed south-east of the capital, while MZhD reported the number as 19.

Several Russian media outlets also reported that an explosion was heard in the vicinity on Saturday morning, although this could not be independently verified by AP.

Russian officials have previously blamed pro-Ukrainian saboteurs for several attacks on the country’s railway system since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022, although no group has claimed responsibility for the damage.

Kyiv has not commented on Saturday’s attacks.

Russia intensifying weaponisation of history, says UK

In its daily intelligence briefing, the UK’s Ministry of Defence says Russia is ramping up its attempt to weaponise history.

It reports :

Russia’s State Archive Agency has published a collection of documents “On the historical unity of the Russians and Ukrainians”. It opens with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s July 2021 article on the subject, immediately followed by his address on the situation in Ukraine given on 21 February 2022, the eve of the invasion. The book features 242 documents ranging from the 11th century to the 20th century, which are used to justify the Kremlin’s current policy and support the claim that foreign subversion turned Ukraine into “anti-Russia”. The documents are accompanied by Putin’s interpretative comments. Last week former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ostensibly wrote an article on the history of Russo-Polish relations. He accused Poland of conducting an aggressive revisionist “Russophobic” policy, warning this could lead to the destruction of Polish statehood and threatening that Russia and Belarus are able to provide an adequate military response if necessary. The weaponisation of history by the Russian leadership is intensifying, aimed at inculcating anti-westernism in the minds of the Russian population and intimidating its immediate western neighbours.

Ex-Nato chief proposes Ukraine joins without Russian-occupied territories

Patrick Wintour

A former Nato secretary general has put forward a proposal for Ukraine to join the military alliance but stripped of the territories occupied by Russia.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen has long worked alongside Andriy Yermak , an adviser to the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, particularly ahead of the last Nato summit in Vilnius this year that ended with no invitation for Ukraine to join.

The two men are again broadly discussing Ukraine’s place in a new European security architecture, including practical questions around the extent of Ukraine’s Nato membership.

Rasmussen, who was Nato’s secretary general between 2009 and 2014, said a plan for partial Ukraine membership would not symbolise a freezing of the conflict, but would instead mark a determination to warn Russia that it cannot prevent Ukraine joining the western defensive alliance.

Nato will hold its 75th anniversary summit in Washington next summer, and the issue of Ukraine’s future membership is bound to be a big topic.

Last week, the European Commission recommended that formal EU membership negotiations should begin with Ukraine in a move its president, Ursula von der Leyen , described as a response to “the call of history”.

But will Ukraine actually end up becoming a member?

Dermot Hodson, the author of Circle of Stars: A History of the EU and the People Who Made It, has written a piece for the Guardian attempting to answer that question:

Analysis: Ukraine signals readiness for a long war

Dan Sabbagh

Ukraine’s counteroffensive has stalled, with progress on the two principal axes on the southern front modest since it began on 4 June. Kyiv’s forces have advanced about 10km south of Velyka Novosilka and 9km south of Orikhiv and there appears no prospect of a breakthrough as the weather turns.

Last week, the reality was acknowledged by Gen Valerii Zaluzhnyi , the commander-in-chief of Kyiv’s military. “Just like in the first world war, we have reached the level of technology that puts us into a stalemate,” he said in an interview with the Economist, while in a related essay he added that the war, after nearly 21 months of fighting, “is gradually moving to a positional form”.

Ukraine has been unable to break through dense Russian minefields, now laid to a depth of 15 to 20km, Zaluzhnyi said. The Zemledeliye remote truck mine laying system can lay down football fields of mines far faster than dismounted Ukrainian sappers can remove them, and the fear is that with more time Russia can develop a system of deep trenches beyond its existing fortified positions.

“We all hoped we would make more progress than we have,” said Yuriy Sak , a former adviser to Ukraine’s defence ministry. “By now we were hoping we would be in control of Tokmak,” a strategic town on the road to Melitopol, which still lies 20km south of the furthest Ukrainian advance. Breaking Russia’s land bridge at Melitopol would require an advance another 70km south-west.

Here are some of the latest images coming through from photographers in Ukraine:

Ukrainian naval drones sank two small Russian landing boats in Crimea, the Reuters news agency reports, while troops braced for further Russian assaults in the east, particularly the shattered town of Avdiivka.

The news agency could not independently verify the report of the attack on Vuzka Bay in the west of Crimea, which one Ukrainian military analyst said was a significant strike and loss for Russia.

There was no immediate comment by Russia, which seized and annexed the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 and whose Black Sea Fleet is headquartered in the Crimean city of Sevastopol.

An initial report from Ukraine’s military intelligence said the two small, amphibious Russian ships had been hit overnight.

A Friday evening update from Ukraine’s military intelligence agency said the attack had been carried out by naval drones. It identified one landing craft as an Akula class vessel, the other a Serna class.

The agency said:

The results of intelligence conducted on 10th November 2023 near Vuzka Bay in temporarily occupied Crimea show that after an attack by naval drones, two small Russian landing ships have been destroyed As a consequence of the attack, both vessels went to the bottom, the Akula straight away and the Serna after attempts to save it.

Opening summary

Hello and welcome to the Guardian’s live coverage of the war in Ukraine .

Two loud explosions have been heard in Kyiv, local media has reported, with the mayor, Vitali Klitschko, urging residents to stay in their shelters.

Air defences were targeting ballistic missiles near the capital, Klitschko wrote on Telegram , adding that several emergency calls had been made but that no victims had so far been found.

The attack came after a long period of calm in the Ukrainian capital. Air defences last downed a missile in Kyiv on 21 September with the falling debris wounding seven people, including a child.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian naval drones sank two small Russian landing boats in Crimea, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency said. The attack, which could not be independently verified, sank an Akula class vessel and a Serna class vessel.

The Ukrainian military said the boats were crewed, and loaded with armoured vehicles. “Boats like this are quite a significant loss,” Andriy Ryzhenko, a military analyst and reserve officer, told Radio NV. “They allowed for the transport of a tactical landing force and equipment relatively inconspicuously.”

In other key developments:

Russian forces are fighting to surround the war-battered frontline town of Avdiivka and capture a strategically located factory nearby, a Ukrainian military spokesperson said . Oleksandr Shtupun said Ukrainian forces were repelling Russian assaults on the large chemical plant and that the facility was under their control.

A military analyst, Serhiy Zgurets, writing on the website of Espreso TV, said Russian forces sought to exploit Ukraine’s focus on Avdiivka by attempting to retake areas they had lost near Bakhmut to the north-east. Russian forces seized Bakhmut in May, but Ukrainian troops have since retaken nearby villages.

Russia’s military said its forces had thwarted a Ukrainian attempt to forge a bridgehead on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River and on nearby islands in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine , killing about 500 Ukrainian soldiers in the past week. “On 9 November, personnel from a motorised rifle company in the Russian military grouping ‘Dnipro’ under the command of Senior LieutenantLt Zolto Arsalanov destroyed servicemen from a unit of Ukraine’s 36th Marine Infantry brigade as they were trying to gain a foothold on the left bank of the Dnipro River,” the defence ministry statement said. The claim could not be independently verified.

A European Union plan to spend up to €20bn ($21.4bn) on military aid for Ukraine is meeting resistance from EU countries and may not survive in its current form, diplomats have said , according to Reuters. Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, proposed in July that the bloc create a fund with up to €5bn a year over four years as part of broader western security commitments to bolster Ukraine. But as EU defence ministers prepare to discuss the plan in Brussels on Tuesday, diplomats say multiple countries – including EU heavyweight Germany – have voiced reservations about committing such large sums years in advance.

Hungary’s prime minister said he did not support moving forward on negotiations on Ukraine’s future membership of the EU , signalling again that his country could pose a major roadblock to Kyiv’s ambitions to join the bloc, which must decide unanimously on the admittance of new countries. “The clear Hungarian position is that the negotiations must not begin,” Viktor Orbán said.

Ukrainian and Russian officials said they had agreed to send a Ukrainian teenager, who was taken to Russia during the war last year, back to his home country , in accordance with his wishes. Bohdan Yermokhin, a 17-year-old whose parents died years ago, would be reunited with a cousin “in a third country” on his 18th birthday later this month, with a view to then return to Ukraine, the Russian children’s rights ombudswoman, Maria Lvova-Belova, said in a statement on Friday.

Russian artillery and drone attacks on Friday killed three people and damaged an unspecified infrastructure facility, power lines and a gas pipeline in the Dnipropetrovsk and Kherson regions of Ukraine, local officials said . Both regions have come under regular shelling by Russian troops in occupied territory on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River.

Ukraine’s presidential chief of staff said he hoped a conference on joint Ukrainian-US weapons production would be held in December in the US , Kyiv’s most important supplier of military assistance. “There was a very important agreement between President Zelenskiy and President Biden,” Andriy Yermak said of the Ukrainian and US leaders. “Next month, I hope, a conference will be held in the United States dedicated to joint [weapons] production of Ukraine and the United States.”

A French court rejected an appeal from the Ukrainian government and ruled that Ukrainian billionaire Kostyantyn Zhevago should not be extradited over accusations of embezzlement, a court spokesperson said . Zhevago, who controls London-listed iron pellet producer Ferrexpo, was arrested at a French ski resort in December 2022 at the request of Ukraine, which wants him for alleged embezzlement involving a now-collapsed bank. Zhevago has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Russia is under no obligation to say where a Ukrainian volunteer soldier convicted and jailed for trying to kill two civilians is being held, the Kremlin said . Human rights groups have demanded that Russia provide information on Maksym Butkevych, whose family and lawyers say they have been unable to establish his whereabouts since August. Butkevych was arrested last year, when his unit was captured on the frontline, and sentenced in March to 13 years in prison.
