Main Requirements in Applying for a Schengen Malta Visa Tourists

1. Visa Application Form – this must be completed and signed

2. 2 Passport-sized Photo – recently taken with white background

3. Valid Passport  (Original and a Copy) – with at least two blank pages that and is valid 3 months upon your return. Include a copy of your bio page as well as those with stickers and stamps.

4. Old Passport(s) – with all pages attached, if applicable

9. Proof of Financial Means

• Bank Certificate or Bank Books – must be original
• Bank statements, credit card statements for the last 3 months
• Income Tax Return
• For minors: proof of means of parent or guardian

10. Proof of Socio-professional status

• Certificate of employment and leave of absence if employed
• DTI or SEC Certificates , ITRs, Financial Statements for Self-Employed
• Proof of Enrollment and Leave of Absence if a student
• For retired persons, proof of pension
• Letter of employment and income of spouse if unemployed but married
• If unemployed and single, any proof of regular income

11. Proof of Will to Return

• An employment contract or SS Contributions (if relevant)
• Titles of Real Estate Properties

Steps on How to Apply for Schengen Malta Visa

STEP 1: Gather all the documents you will need.

STEP 2: Go to the nearest Visa Application Center. There’s no need to book ahead. Submissions are from 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM, Mondays to Fridays. Don’t forget to bring your document and your payment.

In 2019, 34,765 Malta Schengen visa applications were processed by Maltese embassies around the world. 6,830 of these were rejected. There was no data on how many applications were processed in the Philippines.

Applying for a Malta Schengen Visa from the Philippines

If you are residing in the Philippines, either as a national of the country or you have a visa to live there permanently, you will need to apply for a visa if you are planning on visiting Malta.

It’s easy to apply for your visa from the Philippines. All you need to do is submit your application and supporting documents to VFS Global in Manila and Cebu. Once you have done that, your application will be sent to the Embassy of Malta in Beijing for processing.

You can apply up to 3 months before your departure date. Applications generally take a minimum of 15 days to be processed, although it could take longer. As a general rule, you must apply well ahead of your trip to allow your application to be processed in time.

Types of Schengen visas offered at VFS Global in the Philippines/the Embassy of Malta in Beijing

There are different types of visas you can apply for and you must apply for the correct one. This will depend on how long you are going to Malta for and why you are going there.

Visas are available as either:

• Short-stay – for a maximum of 90 days
• Long-stay – for over 90 days

There are several categories of visa:

• Tourist – for vacation, cruise, sightseeing and other recreational activities
• Business/conferences/training – a business visa is required for conducting business or commercial activities. e.g., meetings, conference, training, trade fairs etc. Please note, this visa is only available if you are not being paid for work. If you are planning on undertaking paid work in Malta, you will need to obtain a work permit (see the embassy’s website for more information)
• Visiting family and friends – for the purpose of traveling to Malta to visit family members or friends
• Transit (seafarers) – for seamen to join a ship that is (or will be) in a Schengen port, land to join another ship that is (or will arrive) in a Schengen port, or land due to sickness, repatriation, holiday etc ( see VFS Global’s website for more information)
• Sports, cultural, professional – if you intend to engage in any type of sporting/cultural/professional event
• Employment – if you want to work in Malta
• Study – if you want to study or take part in on-the-job training
• Family reunification – for those who wish to join their spouses, children and parents who are residents in Malta
• Transit visa – if you are catching a connecting flight in Malta on the way to a different destination and not leaving the international zone of the airport

How Can I Apply for a Malta Schengen Visa from VFS Global in the Philippines?

To help you apply for your visa, there are 6 steps to follow:

• Step 1 – Know your visa
• Step 2 – Complete your application form
• Step 3 – Make an appointment
• Step 4 – Prepare your documents and submit them to the visa application center
• Step 5 – Track your application
• Step 6 – Collect your passport

The first thing to do is to know which visa you need to apply for. Go to VFS Global’s website and click on: “Visa types”:

Go to VFS Global’s website again and click on: “Visa types” (as above). You will find the application form by clicking on whichever visa you plan to apply for. You will then be able to download the form to your computer:

There is no need to book an appointment at this particular VFS Global office. You simply walk into the office during the available hours:

Step 4 – Prepare your documents

Whichever visa you are applying for, you need to be aware of the required supporting documents because they are different. Take the time to look at the checklists which are available on VFS Global’s website before you start to prepare your documents. You will need to sign the appropriate checklist to confirm you have submitted the relevant documents when you visit VFS Global.

You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents, so don’t forget to do that too!

Documents include:

• One (1) completed and signed visa application form duly filled in legibly in English
• Two (2) passport-size photographs on a white background, which must be no more than 6 months old
• Original and one (1) photocopy of your passport – only pages with visa stickers or stamps need to be copied, as well as the passport’s extension date if applicable. Your passport should be valid for at least three (3) months upon return to the Philippines. It should contain at least 2 blank pages
• Documentation on former travels abroad should be provided if available e.g. former passport(s) with all pages attached
• Proof of travel – roundtrip airline ticket reservation with Passenger Registration Number (or booking number) and travel itinerary
• Detailed day-to-day itinerary of the planned trip
• Proof of accommodation for the whole duration of the intended stay. Hotel reservation or hotel voucher (to all Schengen states of destination)
• Proof of travel medical insurance – valid for all Schengen States and covering any expenses which may arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment or death during the stay. Minimum coverage of 30,000 euros
• If you are joining a cruise, please provide your booking certificate and the ship’s itinerary
• Proof of financial means – bank certificates, bank books, recent personal bank statement, credit card statement or balance over the last three months, income tax return. If the applicant is a minor: proof of economic means of parents or legal guardians
• Proof of socio-professional status – if employed: certificate of employment, certificate of leave of absence. If self-employed: DTI/SEC registration of business, income tax return, business financial statement. For retired persons: proof of pension or other regular income. If student: proof of enrolment, certificate of leave of absence if traveling during the school year. For unemployed adults: letter of employment and income of the spouse and marriage contract certified by National Statistics Office (if married); any other proof of regular income (if single/divorced/widow/widower)
• Proof of will to return – employment contract or social security contributions (if relevant), copy of real estate property-title deed etc. Proof of family ties in the Philippines (e.g. marriage certificate)
• For minors (under 18) – Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) clearance, Affidavit of support and consent of both parents or legal guardians (notarized and legalized by Department of Foreign Affairs. Birth certificate of the minor certified by the National Statistic Office (NSO) and photocopy of passport of parents/legal guardians
• For non-Filipino applicants who have valid residence status in the Philippines  – Alien Certificate Registration (ACR) and re-entry permit valid for 3 months after return
• Proof of relationship – invitation letter and host’s passport
• Proof of sponsorship

If you’re planning to obtain your flight reservation for visa without paying for the ticket, all you have to do is follow the 3 simple steps below:

• Visit the Visa Reservation website to choose the right package
•  Submit the travel details and make the payment online
• Receive flight itinerary in email

Submitting your documents

On the day of your appointment:

Submit your application and include the following:

• Duly filled out and signed Schengen visa application form
• Duly filled and signed document checklist
• Original passport/s
• Supporting documents (see above)
• Proof of fees payment (cash only)
• Enclose all above documents in a long brown envelope with your name, passport number and contact numbers written on the upper left corner

Also at the center, you will pay the visa fee (see below) and provide biometric data which is where your fingerprints and photograph will be taken.

Visa fees are non-refundable even if your application is rejected. You can pay in cash only in Philippine Pesos. Aside from the visa fee, you will also need to pay the service fee and shipment fee (see below).

Once you have handed in your application to VFS Global, it will be sent to the Embassy of Malta in Beijing to be processed. The embassy may contact you to attend an interview if they need more information about what you have stated in your application. They may ask you questions like:

• Have you been to the Schengen area before?
• What do you do in the Philippines?
• What are you going to do in Malta?
• Do you know anyone in Malta?

Don’t panic about this questioning. Simply be truthful with your answers.

Once a decision has been reached, your passport will be returned to VFS Global and you can collect it in person or have it returned via courier for an additional fee.

The decision will be either:

• Approved – your visa will be attached inside your passport
• Rejected – this would be for a specific reason

Visa applications can be rejected for any number of reasons including:

• Missing documents – you must provide all the required documents. It is important to do this to avoid a rejected application
• Your intent to return home is not clear – you must make it clear to the visa office that you intend to return home. You are not allowed to remain in a country without a visa
• You gave false information – it is not a good idea to do this because the embassy will find out and it could affect your ability to travel abroad in the future
• Invalid passport – if your passport is invalid in any way such as it is not valid for 3 months after you return home, you must get a new one before applying for your visa

MALTA SHORT-TERM VISA FOR PHILIPPINE PASSPORT HOLDERS

What’s surprising is that Malta is a popular tourist destination and known for its warm climate and breathtaking landscapes. With its beautiful weather in a paradise, it serves as locations for major film productions such as Troy, 007: Casino Royale, Davinci Code, Count of Monte Cristo, Captain Phillips, Assassin’s Creed, and Game of Thrones. Name it! The archipelago is home to fantastic places, vast History, friendly climate, and amazing culture one should visit.

In this article, learn more about how to apply for a Malta visa from the Philippines, Malta visa appointment booking, processing time at the Malta visa application center, flight itinerary for a Malta visa, hotel bookings for a Malta visa, Schengen travel insurance for a Malta visa application, and Malta visa application process in the Philippines.

Who is eligible to apply for a Malta short-term visa?

Important documents to prepare.

1. Online Visa Application Form duly filled out and signed by the applicant.

2. Two current biometrical passport photos (35-45 mm width) – have your passport photo taken. The embassy is very strict on their photo specifications. Fortunately, they have a  page  on their official website dedicated to explaining this. Bring at least two copies or more, just in case. One photo should be glued to the application form. The second photo will be returned to you.

• Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or contact lenses, or a head covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons.
• The subject should have their mouth closed  (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows).  

After which, paste your photo on each of the electronic visa form that you completed online  (1 original and 1 photocopy of the form).

3.   Original Passport and a Photocopy of it as well as the Bio Page– The embassy requires that your passport is valid for at least another three months on the date the visa application is submitted. It also must have two empty pages for them to stamp your passport. If you have renewed your passport, bring your old one/s with you. These are needed especially if you have previous overseas trips.

4. Proof of travel/ Travel plan (travel destination, route, proof of accommodation, and itinerary) – a copy of the roundtrip airline booking with dates and flight numbers specifying entry and exit from Malta. With the necessary documents needed, this should clearly state the purpose of your travel. You just need to show a flight itinerary from the Philippines that should cover your entry and exit to and from Malta and to all Schengen countries of destinations, including your exit and entry from MANILA TO MANILA (EX. MANILA-MALTA-SPAIN-MALTA-MANILA). 

• If applying as a Tourist:
• A cover letter addressed to the Malta Embassy Consul. If you are a first-time traveler to Malta, please submit an informal declaration through a cover letter explaining your willingness to return to the Philippines before the expiration of your visa: What exactly will be an incentive for you to return to the Philippines, and can you submit proofs for these circumstances?
• Your day-to-day itinerary – be specific in indicating the place you will visit and the tours you will join or take. 
• Proof of accommodation or Hotel reservations – you would need to show hotel bookings, but this does not mean that you must pay for your hotel reservations this early. You can check via Booking.com, Airbnb, Agoda, or simply an apartment. 
• If joining a cruise , please provide your booking certificate and the ship’s itinerary.
• Flight reservation – Reservation ONLY . Do not pay for your flight reservations until your visa is approved. You can avail of my services for a dummy ticket so that I can assist you with your flight reservations. Get a flight reservation here . 

B. If without a Sponsor:   In cases where the applicant, and not the inviting party, will be responsible for his/her own expenses, s/he should provide evidence that:

• the accommodation has been obtained for the entirety of the stay in Malta
• s/he is in possession of funds totaling at least 48 Euros for each day of the applicant’s visit in Malta (such as Bank Certificates, Bank statements, Bank Books, Latest Income Tax Return, Business Permit, Employment Certificate, SEC registration)
• Department for Social Welfare Department (DSWD) Travel Clearance – If a child (minor) is traveling without the parent(s) having legal custody, a travel permit may be necessary. Please contact the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) after you receive the visa.
• Affidavit of Support and Consent of both parents or legal guardians (especially of the non-traveling parent) notarized and legalized by the Department of Foreign Affairs
• Birth Certificate of the minor certified by the National Statistic Office (NSO)  
• Photocopy of passport of parents /legal guardians
• Proof of economic means of parents/legal guardians

5.  Travel Insurance  –  the coverage must be applied during the entire duration of the trip in Malta and must be valid for all Schengen countries. Coverage sum must be AT LEAST EUR 30,000 (Php 2.5 million or USD 50,000). I highly recommend Pioneer Insurance which you can avail yourself through me. 6.  Proof of vaccination – Vaccines that are recognized are only those that are registered by the European Medicines Agency (EMA): Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson.

7.  Proof of Funds or Financial Capacity  –  these documents are necessary to prove that you can either support yourself or your sponsor can cover your expenses financially during the whole duration of your travel. 

• Bank statements  – must show records of the past six months. A bank statement shows your transactions in your account at a specific period. It will show debits (withdrawals, payments, taxes, service fees) and credits (deposits, interest earned.) Bank Statements can also be seen online especially if you have a registered account. There is no signature for the manager or a bank officer.
• Bank Certificate  – it is  a confirmation by the branch manager  or a bank officer that you have an existing account in their bank. It shows the account number, the type, and other details such as the opening date of your account, your account balance as of the date of request, and your average daily balance. 
• Other proof of income  (supporting documents) – although it is not really required, you can submit invoices and pay slip equivalent to prove that you earn enough to support this trip financially.
• If applying as a Tourist or as a Visitor with a Sponsor  – this means that your host and/or sponsor (family, friend, partner, or fiancé) pledges to take full responsibility to cover all the expenses that you will incur during the whole duration of your travel.

9.  Proof of Civil Status  – Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Death Certificate of the spouse, etc. These documents must be issued on security paper (SECPA) by the Philippine Statistics Authority, see   http://www.psaserbilis.com.ph . 

Note:  The birth certificate does not need to be authenticated by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs.

10.  Evidence of your rootedness in the Philippines  – Evidence of deep-rootedness a.k.a. strong family and social ties to your home country, is  one of the most critical requirements when applying for a Schengen Visa . It is what the Consul will look for in your visa application. So how do you prove that you are firmly established in the Philippines and that you will go back to your home country?

• Employment or Work contract and bank account statements or payslips showing the transfer of your last six-monthly salaries 
• Certificate of Employment which should include the employer’s full name, complete address, telephone number with area code, details regarding the position, income, and employment duration
• Approved letter of approved leave signed by your employer (Leave of Absence letter)
• Optional : Signed No Objection Certificate which states that your employer has no objection for you to travel to Malta and that they have approved your leave request
• Most recent Income Tax Return 2316 (ITR) 
• Optional  Supporting Documents: › Government Mandated Contributions – SSS, Pag-ibig, Philhealth Contributions › If with existing loan – SSS Loan or Pag-ibig Salary loan
• DTI Business Name Registration Certificate
• Barangay Business Clearance
• Mayor’s Business Permit from your Municipality where the business address has been registered
• Business activity of your company for the last 6 months – invoices and bank transactions

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Apply for Malta Schengen Visa

If you are residing in the Philippines, either as a national of the country or you have a visa to live there permanently, you will need to apply for a visa if you are planning on visiting Malta.

It’s easy to apply for your visa from the Philippines. All you need to do is submit your application and supporting documents to  VFS Global  in Manila and Cebu. Once you have done that, your application will be sent to the  Embassy of Malta in Beijing  for processing.

You can apply up to 3 months before your departure date. Applications generally take a minimum of 15 days to be processed, although it could take longer. As a general rule, you must apply well ahead of your trip to allow your application to be processed in time.

If you are applying for a Malta Schengen Visa , there is no Embassy of Malta in the Philippines. The nearest embassy to apply for a short-stay visa is at the Embassy of Malta in China, but the good news is, you don’t need to go to the embassy in China to lodge all your documents. It’s much more convenient to lodge them at VFS Manila as they already have a proper system to process this.

Malta is a party to the Schengen Agreement. This means that U.S. citizens may enter Malta for up to  90 days for tourist or business purposes  without a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date. You need proof of sufficient funds and a return airline ticket for entry. Safety and Security

Credible information indicates terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Europe. European governments are taking action to guard against terrorist attacks; however, all European countries remain potentially vulnerable to attacks from transnational terrorist organizations. Malta’s open borders with members of the Schengen zone allow the possibility of individual terrorists entering/exiting the country undetected.

CRIME: The most commonly reported crimes are simple assault , pick-pocketing , and petty theft . While armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides are not as common as in some major U.S. cities, they do occur. Criminals focus on areas and establishments frequented by tourists.

• Secure your valuables, and be aware of pick-pockets and purse snatchers.
• Theft of unattended property is a very common problem.

Nightclubs: You should be careful in the Paceville nightclub area, where excessive drinking, large crowds, and interaction with heavy-handed bouncers can lead to violence , including some that appears to be racially-motivated . Criminals have drugged some travelers at bars and robbed and assaulted them.

Victims of Crime: Report crimes to the local police by dialing 112 and contact the U.S. Embassy at (+356) 2561-4000.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not occur on a regular basis.  Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field.  In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities.  First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities to provide urgent medical treatment.  U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .  

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Your U.S. passport will not help you avoid arrest or prosecution .

• Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Malta are severe .
• Malta’s laws on the rights of arrestees are different from the United States. For example, once you have contacted a lawyer, you lose your right to remain silent.

Judicial Proceedings for Criminal Offenses in Malta: Trials typically last five to seven years and are characterized by lengthy and sometimes unpredictable delays between hearings. Foreign nationals can expect to be denied bail while a court case is ongoing, which can result in lengthy periods of pre-trial detention ranging from several months to several years. Obtaining no-fee legal aid can be a slow and difficult process, delaying already lengthy judicial proceedings.

Customs and Currency Restrictions: Malta customs authorities may enforce strict regulations concerning currency restrictions and temporary importation into or export from Malta of items such as firearms , antiquities , or any item that might be deemed to have resale value. It is advisable to contact the Maltese Embassy in Washington, D.C. for specific information regarding customs requirements.

• Malta’s customs authorities encourage the use of an ATA (Admission Temporaire/Temporary Admission) Carnet for the temporary admission of professional equipment, commercial samples and/or goods for exhibitions and fair purposes. The U.S. Council for International Business issues and guarantees the ATA Carnet in the United States.

LGBTI RIGHTS: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Malta.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance: Very few public or private spaces in Malta are wheelchair accessible. Public transportation and most sidewalks or footpaths, including road crossings, are not accessible for those with mobility challenges. Many apartments lack elevators.

Medical care is available from private and government clinics and hospitals. The quality of medical care in Malta is at U.S. standards; however, customer service standards are lower, there are cultural differences with regard to communication, and there may be long waiting times for non-urgent medical care . Medical specialists are few. Private hospitals generally offer better customer service, shorter wait times, and more amenities. Mater Dei is Malta’s main government hospital. Though it offers full service, including a modern emergency room and trauma facilities, it can be crowded and difficult to navigate.

The U.S. Government does not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas . Most overseas care providers only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

If traveling with prescription medication , check with the Government of Malta and its Medicines Authority to ensure the medication is legal in Malta . Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

TRAFFIC SAFETY AND ROAD CONDITIONS: Maltese drivers may drive more aggressively and with less caution than visitors anticipate. Roads flood easily and are often narrow, winding and congested, with poor visibility around curves.

• In Malta, automobiles drive on the left-hand side of the road.
• Buses are the primary means of public transportation.
• Taxis are safe but expensive and are not metered . Agree on the charge with the driver in advance .

The Malta Visa Application for Filipino

FOR TOURIST OR BUSINESS

• One (1) completed and signed visa application form duly filled in legibly in English.
• Two (2) passport-size photographs on a white background,which must be no more than 6 months old. Glue one photograph on the designated space of the application form.
• Original and one (1) photocopy of the applicant’s passport(only pages with visa stickers or stamps need to be copied, as well as the passport’s extension date if applicable). The applicant’s passport should be valid for at least three (3)months valid upon return. It should contain at least 2 blank pages. Former passport(s) with all pages attached.

Proof of travel :

• Copy of the roundtrip airline booking with Passenger Registration Number (or booking number) and travel itinerary.
• Airline itinerary should cover your entry and exit to and from Malta and to all Schengen countries of destinations, including your exit and entry from MANILA TO MANILA (EX. MANILA-LONDONSCHENGEN-LONDON-MANILA).
• The ticket should prove that the stay in the Schengen area does not exceed 90 days. It is recommended not to buy the ticket until the visa is granted.Detailed day-to-day itinerary of the planned trip.

Proof of Travel medical insurance coverage;

• From an accredited Insurance Company
• The insurance must cover CO V I D1 9 on the entire period of intended stay, valid for all Schengen States and covering any expenses which may arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment or death during the stay.
• Minimum coverage of 30,000 euros.

Proof of financial means of the applicants :

• If applicant is a minor : Proof of economic means of parents or legal guardians

• Certificate of employment

For retired persons: Proof of pension or other regular income

If student:   Proof of enrolment - Certificate of leave of absence if travelling during the school year

For unemployed adults :

• If married : Letter of employment and income of the spouse and marriage contract certified by National Statistics Office
• If single/divorced/widow/widower : any other proof of regular income

Proof of will to return :

• Copy of employment contract or social security contributions ( if relevant ).
• Copy of real estate property- title deed ( if relevant )
• Proof of family ties in the Philippines ( e.g. marriage certificate )

For minors (under 18) :

• Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Clearance
• Affidavit of Support and Consent of both parents or legal guardians (especially of the non-travelling parent) notarized and legalized by Department of Foreign Affairs.
• Birth Certificate of the minor certified by the National Statistic Office (NSO)
• Photocopy of passport of parents/legal guardians.

For non-Filipino applicants who have valid residence status inthe Philippines:

• Copy of Alien Certificate Registration (ACR)
• Re-entry permit valid for 3 months after return
• PERSONAL APPEARANCE NEEDED.
• If the checklist states that you need to provide the original document, please bring the original copies when you submit your application. Otherwise, we will not be able to accept your application.
• *For those documents which are mentioned to be “ notarised ” pertains to “notarised or authenticated by Department of Foreign Affairs”.
