Max and Iggor Cavalera to Celebrate Classic Sepultura Albums with 2022 “Return Beneath Arise” US Tour
The May/June trek will see the Cavalera brothers playing songs from Beneath the Remains and Arise
Max and Iggor Cavalera are celebrating the classic Sepultura albums Beneath the Remains and Arise with a 2022 US tour.
Billed as the “Return Beneath Arise” tour, the outing will see the founding Sepultura members playing a hybrid setlist of tracks from their iconic 1989 and 1991 LPs.
The tour kicks off May 22nd in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and runs through a June 25th show in Tempe, Arizona. Highlights include an appearance at Maryland Deathfest and a date at the Gramercy Theater in New York City. Get tickets via Ticketmaster .
“After Covid-19 us Metal Heads need to release our aggression with some Beneath the Remains and Arise !” stated Max Cavalera in a press release.
Iggor Cavalera added: “Can’t wait to perform our “Return Beneath Arise” tour for our North American fans. See you in the Pit!!!”
Beneath the Remains and Arise are widely considered Sepultura’s finest albums and two of the greatest thrash/death metal releases of all-time. The band was on the forefront of the transition from thrash to death metal in the late 1980s, with these two albums bridging that creative gap.
Sepultura have since forged a notable career without the Cavalera brothers, who went on to form other major bands such as Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, and Killer Be Billed. Separately, Sepultura have just embarked on their own North American spring tour .

Max and Igor Cavalera announce May & June 2022 US ‘Return Beneath Arise’ Tour
“Beneath The Remains/Arise tour is coming! Introducing on bass guitar, thrashing and blasting bass beast Mike Leon (Soulfly) and on lead guitar, state of the art, death/thrash expert, Daniel Gonzalez (Possessed/Gruesome). We’re gonna take these songs to the Metal world in the most brutal way ever! Under a pale gray sky, we shall Arise”, says Max Cavalera .
“We can only count with the illest players to step on stage with me and Max to play Beneath/Arise. So getting Dan Gonzalez from Possessed/Gruesome and Mike Leon from Soulfly was an amazing choice!… Can’t wait to hit the road!”, comments Iggor Cavalera .
“I am super excited to be a part of the revival of these classic albums with the brothers that created them, it is a great honor! These shows are gonna CRUSH, and I’m sure that we are gonna deliver these songs better than they have ever been played before to everyone who joins us! See you on the road!”, states Mike Leon .
“It would be an understatement to say that I am incredibly stoked and honored to be able to play with Max and Iggor, and the fact that we’ll be playing material from Beneath The Remains and Arise is beyond surreal to me since I grew up worshiping those albums. Max and Iggor helped change the standards of extreme Metal and those albums are still living proof of that. It’s insane to me as a fan and as a musician to be able to play these songs live, and I can’t wait to do them justice!!!”, mentions Daniel Gonzalez .
Since Sepultura’s formation over 30 years ago, the Cavalera brothers have each seen unparalleled success in the music industry. Max’s more recent work with Soulfly, Go Ahead And Die, Cavalera Conspiracy (also featuring Iggor) and Killer Be Killed, in addition to Iggor’s projects MIXHELL, Petbrick, and Soulwax, proves the lasting power of the Cavalera legacy.
It’s safe to say that the releases of “Beneath the Remains” (1989) and “Arise” (1991) completely changed the landscape of metal music throughout the world.

Max + Iggor Cavalera Announce U.S. Tour Celebrating Two Classic Sepultura Albums
Iconic metal frontman Max Cavalera ( Soulfly , Cavalera Conspiracy , ex- Sepultura ) and his drummer brother Igor "Iggor" Cavalera (Cavalera Conspiracy, ex-Sepultura) will tour the United States this summer with a celebratory set of classic Sepultura material in honor of the Brazilian band's classic albums Beneath the Remains (1989) and Arise (1991).
Both Cavaleras were founding members of Sepultura. Max departed in 1996, followed by Iggor a decade later. Max started Soulfly in 1997 and has since moonlighted in Killer Be Killed and Nailbomb. Iggor, who also played in Nailbomb and Strife, started Cavalera Conspiracy with his brother in 2007.
See the Cavalera brothers' upcoming tour dates down near the bottom of this post.
The Cavaleras revealed in a statement on Monday (March 7), "Announcing the 'Max & Iggor Cavalera 89/91 tour' — celebrating the legendary albums Beneath the Remains and Arise ." It continued, "The original founding members of influential RIAA gold-certified Brazilian heavy metal legend Sepultura, Max and Iggor Cavalera, will celebrate the legendary albums Beneath the Remains and Arise by performing a hybrid setlist exclusively with songs from both albums, throughout the United States, in May and June of 2022."
The Cavaleras prepped concertgoers for the retrospective U.S. trek in 2020 when Max said, "We are just paying tribute to our old records. We played [1996's] Roots for a while, and last year, we did a lot of Beneath the Remains and Arise together, and that was great."
He added, "Those records are so iconic; they're masterpieces of that era. So we're gonna do more of that."

MAX And IGOR CAVALERA Announce Fall 2022 U.S. Tour Leg of Celebration of SEPULTURA’s “Beneath The Remains” And “Arise” Albums
Former SEPULTURA members Max Cavalera and Igor “Iggor” Cavalera have announced the fall 2022 leg of the “Return Beneath Arise” U.S. tour. “Return Beneath Arise” sees Max and Igor performing select tracks from SEPULTURA ‘s seminal “Beneath The Remains” and “Arise” albums.
The trek will kick off on September 28 in Pomona, California and end on October 29 in Santa Ana, California.
“Return Beneath Arise” Tour dates:
At the time Max said: “ ‘Beneath The Remains’ / ‘Arise’ tour is coming! Introducing on bass guitar, thrashing and blasting bass beast Mike Leon ( SOULFLY ) and on lead guitar, state-of-the-art death/thrash expert Daniel Gonzalez ( POSSESSED / GRUESOME ). We’re gonna take these songs to the metal world in the most brutal way ever! Under a pale gray sky, we shall arise.”
Regarding what fans can expect from the show, Max said: “It’s all about the music. These records were created around the songs’ pure power and raw aggression. To me, special effects would take away from that. It’s just us jamming, no gimmicks. We play a little different night to night, but we give it all at every show, and I like feeling completely exhausted at the end of the night.”
Max also expressed his joy at once again making music with his brother: “We had a hard patch and didn’t speak for 10 years, but it is so good to be back with him, hanging out and playing music,” he said. “There’s a magical genetic thing that happens when we play together. We create raw, primitive music that we get to experience with the audience.”
In 1996, Max exited SEPULTURA after the rest of the band split with Max ‘s wife Gloria as their manager. Igor left SEPULTURA in June 2006 due to “artistic differences.” His departure from the band came five months after he announced that he was taking a break from SEPULTURA ‘s touring activities to spend time with his second wife and their son (who was born in January 2006).

Brazilian-born brothers Max and Igor Cavalera together co-founded the thrash metal band Sepultura in 1984 in Belo Horizonte. Max Cavalera was their lead singer and rhythm guitarist until 1996 when he departed the band. Igor Cavalera played drums for the band until 2006 when he left the band. He was the sole remaining original member.
Sepultura helped usher in the second wave of thrash metal from the late 1980s to the mid-90s with their first handful of albums. Together, they created two of Sepultura’s best-known and to this day, most popular albums – Beneath The Remains (1989) and Arise (1991). These two albums were highly influential to thrash metal of the day and are now widely considered to be classic albums.
Max and Igor began celebrating Beneath The Remains and Arise in 2018 when they embarked on a European tour. It took four more years to bring the tour to the U.S. with the Return Beneath Arise 2022 Tour. The U.S. shows, many of which have sold out, have created massive anticipation from the fans to see these two albums celebrated when many fans weren’t even alive when they were released.
Young Joliet, Illinois thrash metal band Backlash was formed in 2014. This four-piece group has recently released their debut album, Colossus just last year in 2021. I must admit that I had never heard of Backlash before I saw them perform on this night. In fact, I didn’t even know I was going to be seeing them at all. They weren’t on the roster for the show as of 24 hours before the show. This happens quite often and usually, it ends up being a disaster when a band is added last minute. I’ve been reviewing and shooting shows and bands from around the Chicagoland area for over a decade now and have never run across Backlash until now. I’m glad I did because this young band impressed the Hell out of me.
They seemed like a well-polished heavy band. Their music sounded incredible. They were very heavy, exactly the kind of metal I’m a fan of. I’m a big thrash fan and their sound caught my ear. In fact, I went home after the show and listened to their CD on Spotify and you should too. Backlash is a band that I will be keeping an eye on and I feel they will be going somewhere. Check them out.

HM is a two-piece, stoner/doom metal band from the wilds of the New River, Arizona desert. There are a couple of interesting facts about this band. First, they perform live as a two-piece band. There is only a guitar and drums, but no bass. I found this to be very curious. I thought they would sound terrible without the bass sound for their low-end, but I was mistaken. They actually sounded pretty good.
Secondly, the frontman and vocalist, Igor A. Cavalera is the son of Max Cavalera ( Sepultura, Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy fame). I also found this to be very interesting because the musical ability didn’t fall very far from the tree. In the studio, Igor A. handles all the guitar, bass, and vocal duties while Johnny Valles handles all the drums.
For a two-person band, they were pretty heavy. I loved their funky, doom-laden riffs with shrieking vocals. As I said, the musicianship definitely runs in the family.

I’ve seen Warbringer live several times now and I just can’t say enough about this band. I feel they are one of the best and one of my favorites of the new generation of thrash metal bands out today. They seriously kill it every single time and every single show. Their aggression and brutality as a band is second to none. I’ve seen them as openers and as the headlining band themselves, which is where they belong IMO. But opening for a band such as Cavalera Bros. gives them much-needed exposure to crowds that might not have had the chance to see how good they really are.
Led by frontman John Kevill, who also IMO is probably the best thrash vocalist in the game right now. He is the only original member left in the band. Kevill is also one of the band’s chief lyricists. His stage presence is undeniable and can work a crowd like no one I’ve ever seen. He can turn a low-key audience into a crazy, moshing crowd in no time. As good as their music is I really believe it would not be the same band without John Kevill.
Now, Warbringer’s music is absolutely nothing to scoff at. They are one of the top few heaviest thrash bands performing today. Warbringer as a band is everything I love about the thrash genre at this time. Their music is precise and each member’s musicality is as good as it gets. It may sound as if I’m gushing about this band but I think it’s truly deserved. With Adam Carroll on rhythm guitar, Chase Becker on lead guitar, Chase Bryant on bass, and Carlos Cruz on the drums, they each operate on the highest level like a well-oiled machine.

MAX AND IGOR CAVALERA
After the previous acts, especially Warbringer, the crowd was fit to be tied while waiting for Cavalera to take the stage. On this night, The Forge’s security personnel were earning their money whilst dealing with all the crowd surfers during the show.
Upon seeing Max and his brother take the stage, literally, all Hell broke loose in the audience. As they led into the title track for “Beneath The Remains” the crowd was unstoppable. It was such a treat to hear these classic songs being played one after the other from this classic album. “Inner Self”, “Stronger Than Hate”, and “Mass Hypnosis” are just some of the highlights from an album that’s nearly perfect top to bottom. Of the two classic albums performed on this night, Beneath The Remains is my favorite of the two.
Following “Primitive Future”, the final song from Beneath The Remains , they went right into the title track “Arise” and we’re now into songs from that album. Standouts included “Dead Embryonic Cells”, “Murder”, and the Motorhead cover “Orgasmatron”.
Seeing the two founding original members of Sepultura play most of the tracks from that band’s two greatest albums was something I’ll never forget and will probably not be able to see again. Magic happened on this incredible night to a near-capacity crowd and I was there to see it. I can die happy now.

MAX And IGOR CAVALERA Re-Record SEPULTURA's 'Schizophrenia' Album
CAVALERA , the band featuring former SEPULTURA members Max and Igor "Iggor" Cavalera , has become synonymous with extreme metal music, a name that to this day still holds the highest regard, a family legacy built upon decades of musical aggression. In 2023, Max and Igor achieved what some would say was an impossible feat; they revisited their earliest SEPULTURA releases, "Morbid Visions" and "Bestial Devastation" , and re-recorded them with bone-breaking intensity. A risk that few would dare to even attempt, yet they artfully and prolifically attained their trademark raw sound by means that could only be described as magic or time travel.
It seems that the ball would not stop rolling as now they are entering the final chapter of their early-days trilogy. SEPULTURA 's "Schizophrenia" is an iconic album in terms of early thrash and death metal, a household name for those of us invested in extreme metal. This was the point where the Cavaleras refined their dark, dingy, speed-influenced songs, into something a bit more mature, developed, and technical. Decades later, they have once more unlocked the asylum that is "Schizophrenia" , opening the doors to that banished, twisted recording which will be unleashed unto to world on June 21 via Nuclear Blast Records .
The first taste of the reissue comes in the form of the live music video for the single "Escape To The Void" . Fans will enjoy footage filmed by Costin Chioreanu and Olivia Chioreanu from the band's chilling performance at 013 Venue in Tilburg, Netherlands in 2023.
Max Cavalera states: "The Third World Trilogy is finally complete with 'Schizophrenia' , 'Bestial Devastation' and 'Morbid Visions' , all three Brazilian underground gems! To me, 'Schizophrenia' is the ultimate death/ thrash experiment! I was inspired to take on the world and this recording shows my commitment is relentless! This one is for all the generations to enjoy! Play at max volume!"
Igor comments: "1987 was a very progressive year for metal, with releases like CELTIC FROST 'Into The Pandemonium' , VOIVOD 'Killing Technology' and BATHORY 'Under The Sign Of The Black Mark' , so it was no surprise on how we approached 'Schizophrenia' pushing our boundaries from a black/death metal sound to a more thrash metal aesthetics. We still had some ideas from 'Morbid Visions' and some new songs. I'm very proud of the songwriting and even more proud of our re-recordings."
CAVALERA 's "Schizophrenia" track listing:

No stranger to collaborations, the Cavalera brothers enlisted Travis Stone ( PIG DESTROYER ) on lead guitars, and that choice becomes obvious within the first song. The full lineup would consist of more Cavalera alumni, as Igor Amadeus Cavalera ( GO AHEAD AND DIE , HEALING MAGIC ) once more brought his talents on bass to the fold. Thundering and thrumming the low end with brute force, it is clear that the double Iggor and Igor combination is a rhythm section to be reckoned with.
It should come as no surprise that the CAVALERA brothers always felt that these songs deserved a fresh take with modern production. From April 15 to June 5, 2023 the band re-recorded the album at Focusrite Room in Mesa Arizona. Mixing and mastering was handled by Arthur Rizk ( SOULFLY , GO AHEAD AND DIE , TURNSTILE ).
"Schizophrenia" 's album cover has obsessed and fascinated fans for decades. The brothers left no stone unturned and no detail unnoticed, also revisioning the original cover artwork of the album, restored in hand-painted watercolors by Eliran Kantor .
This summer, CAVALERA will be traveling across Europe and the U.K. on their "Third World Trilogy" tour. The trek will kick off on June 12 in Leichester and will make stops in Wroclaw, Oslo, and Barcelona before ending in Switzerland on July 21.
CAVALERA is:
