mediterraneo wine & food and travel 2023

The first international trade fair in the Mediterranean II EDITION

The beauty, the goodness, the value.

Italian food and wine and tourism companies meet foreign companies and international operators in the sector (buyers, importers, distributors, trade agents, travel agents, representatives, wholesalers, restaurateurs, hoteliers) at one of the most important exhibition centers in the Mediterranean Basin: Mostra D'Oltremare in Naples.

The Location (Mostra D'Oltremare)

Mostra d'Oltremare, inaugurated as the Triennial Exhibition of Italian Overseas Lands on May 9, 1940, was and is a large, protected and safe park, unique in its kind. Mostra d'Oltremare stands at the center of an articulated system of activities that embrace multiple sectors and involve, both directly and indirectly, companies, associations, institutions, professionals, and consumers. It is a multifunctional urban park of about 720,000 square meters, with a prestigious urban and environmental heritage, which brings together, in perfect harmony, architecture, greenery and initiatives of various kinds.

A big opportunity

The Participation in the 2nd Edition of the MEDITERRANEAN WINE & FOOD AND TRAVEL international trade fair represents for Italian food and wine and tourism companies, and for foreign companies, the most important global trade fair event ever held in the Mediterranean area. The fair proposes, as a first initiative, the aggregation of Italian companies from various regions and foreign companies from various countries. In fact, the event includes an exhibition area intended for Italian companies - within which to promote and relaunch the MADE IN ITALY brand (starting from the South) - and an area intended for foreign companies.

The Best Food Destination in the US, According to Tripadvisor Users

The travel platform analyzed millions of reviews from the past year to determine the best places to travel in 2023.

Maria Yagoda is a senior editor at Food & Wine, where she has worked for five years, specializing in restaurant and travel coverage.

mediterraneo wine & food and travel 2023

If most of your travel revolves around eating, this news is relevant to your interests. Tripadvisor, the digital travel platform, surveyed millions of user reviews from the past year to name the best places to travel in 2023, and one category focused specifically on the best food destination in America.

This year, New Orleans landed the number one spot for the U.S. — and with good reason. The city is full of restaurants worth getting on a plane for and boasts a rich, centuries-old food culture you can't find anywhere else. On the international list, Rome was named the best food destination in the world, and we think that checks out. (You can see the full list of top-ranked food destinations here .)

Lara Hata / Getty Images

"We saw a resurgence of travel demand in 2022, and the outlook for this year is bright," Sarah Firshein, the head of editorial at Tripadvisor, shared in a statement. "Long-haul trips have made a comeback, and we're seeing a lot of Americans excited to plan trips to Asia and the Pacific region for the first time in several years. Cities like Paris and London, which may have taken a backseat to less populous destinations throughout the pandemic, are back on travelers' minds, while places like Alaska and Cuba are also piquing a lot of interest."

Notably, the platform named Cuba the number one trending destination for 2023, and Fes, Morocco, was named the "best place for culture."

We have our own predictions about what travel will look like this year , too. Expect a resurgence in train travel, off-beat food trails, and all-inclusive resorts.

Have passport, will travel for food? Foodie travel is for those of us who understand life is too short to eat bad food. Think of it this way, our favorite dinner deliveries are international: pizza, Thai, Indian, Chinese, Mexican. But there’s nothing like having it straight from the source. Instead of ordering tacos for takeout, go on a food tour through Oaxaca and try the Mezcals exclusive to the region. Have paella on a sandy beach in Spain or get to know the many faces of French and Italian cuisine through food and wine travel. If there’s one thing culinary travel teaches us, it’s that there’s a binding cultural thread in food. We learn about the people, their customs, their access to ingredients, and the ingenuity behind cooking techniques, some of which can even seem primitive. But once you taste a country’s authentic cuisine, and not the over-salted knock-off versions served in tourist traps, you’ll never be the same.

Troubled times for wine in 2023: global production and consumption shrinking.

In 2023, the world wine production declined by 10% to reach 237.3 million hectolitres. Most major wine countries experienced a very difficult year. France regained its position as the world’s biggest wine producer. Wine consumption worldwide also declined. It reached 221 million hectolitres in 2023, which is a decrease compared to 2022 with 2.6%. Equally, the world's vineyard surface area shrunk in 2023, but only modestly, with 0.5% to 7.2 million hectares. Thanks to the decline in both production and consumption, the market is still in balance but has suffered significant inflationary pressure.

John Barker, director general of The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), presented today the estimates for the wine industry in 2024. (All numbers given here are preliminary estimates by the OIV.)

World Wine Production — shrinking

The world’s total wine production declined dramatically in 2023, shrinking by 10% from 2022 to reach 237.3 million hectolitres (Mhl). This is a two-decade-long trend. In 2004, the world's wine production reached around 295 Mhl. Today, it is around 20% lower.

The volume in 2023 is the lowest wine production since 1961. The picture varies from country to country, but most big wine producers saw a decline. Some countries experienced very dramatic declines.

France regained its position as the world’s biggest wine producer and actually increased the volume by 4%. However, both Italy and Spain, the number two and three, saw very significant reductions in wine production, minus 23% and 21% respectively.

The decline is mainly due to the extreme climate conditions that several countries experienced, including rains, floods, fires, etc., and the ensuing problems with vineyard diseases.

World wine production 2023

Of the top ten countries for wine production, only France, the USA, and Portugal increased output.

It is worth noting that these changes mean that the USA has significantly narrowed the gap to “the big three” (France, Italy, and Spain). Next year (2024) will show if this is a permanent rapprochement or if it was temporary. Following those, we have the traditional southern hemisphere “gang of four”, Chile, Australia, South Africa, and Argentina, which are close to each other in wine volume, but Germany is catching up on them.

The world’s three biggest wine producers, France, Italy and Spain, together only have a hair’s breadth from making half of all the world’s wine.

The world’s top ten countries with the biggest production of wine are:

  • France, 28 Mhl, +4%
  • Italy, 38.3 Mhl, -23%
  • Spain, 28.3 Mhl, -21%
  • USA, 24.3%, +9%
  • Chile, 11 Mhl, -11%
  • Australia, 9.6 Mhl, -26%
  • South Africa, 9.3 Mhl, -10%
  • Argentina, 8.8 Mhl, -23%
  • Germany, 8.6 Mhl, -4%
  • Portugal, 7.5%, +10%

World Vineyard Surface Area — shrinking

The world’s total acreage of vineyards declined moderately, by 0.5% to 7.2 million hectares. Even if a loss of 0.5% may seem modest, the decline in “wine production capacity” is a trend that has been going on for more than twenty years since a peak in 2003. The global vineyard acreage was then just over 7.8 million hectares. Almost 8% has been lost.

Spain remains the biggest country with almost one million hectares. France is second; China is third and Italy is number four.

The world’s top ten countries with the largest vineyard area are:

  • Spain, 945 Mha (million hectares), with a declining ten-year trend and a decline in ‘24
  • France, 792 Mha, stable trend, decline in ‘24
  • China, 756 Mha, uncertain trend, stable ‘24
  • Italy, 720 Mha, slightly upward trend, stable in ‘24
  • Türkiye, 410 Mha, strongly declining trend, decline in ‘24
  • USA, 392 Mhl, significantly declining trend, stable ‘24
  • Argentina, 205 Mhl, declining trend, decline in ‘24
  • Romania, 187 Mhl, declining trend, decline in ‘24
  • Portugal, 182 Mhl, declining trend, decline in ‘24
  • India, 180 Mhl, growing trend, growth in ‘24

The EU countries have 45% of the world’s total acreage and five of the top ten countries. The six biggest countries represent 56% of the total.

It should be noted that these numbers include all vineyards, including those producing grapes for other uses than wine, such as raisins and fruit juice.

World Wine Consumption — shrinking

The world’s wine consumption follows the same negative trend: global wine consumption declined in 2023.

The world’s wine consumption reached 221 million hectolitres (Mhl) in 2023, which is a decrease of 2.6% compared to 2022. This is also a long-term trend. Consumption reached a peak in 2007 when it reached around 250 Mhl. It is now down around 12% from that level.

OIV estimates that the decline in consumption is due to the covid effect and inflation, leading to higher consumer prices.

World wine consumption 2023

Most countries have only seen moderate changes in consumption. The exceptions are China, where wine consumption dropped by a quarter, and Romania, where it increased by one-fifth.

The USA remains the world’s biggest wine-consuming country. It is followed by the big European wine-producing countries France, Italy and Germany. Then we have the UK, Spain and Russia.

World wine consumption, major countries, 2023

But this is not the end of the bad news for the global wine industry.

World Wine Exports and International Trade — declining

Wine exports saw a decline in both volume (-6.3%) and in value (-4.7%) in 2023 compared to 2022.

The OIV also tracks another interesting number that they call “the market internationalisation index”. It indicates how much wine is consumed in country other than where it was produced. In other words, it is another way of looking at domestic consumption compared to exports; an illustration of wine globalisation. It is also something that sends a message to wine producers: “export markets are increasingly important”.

The “market internationalisation index” has seen a rapid increase, meaning that more and more wine is consumed somewhere else than in its home market. Twenty-four years ago, in 2000, the market internationalisation index was around 27%. Well over two-thirds of all wine was consumed on the “home market”. Twenty-one years later, the index had reached 48% - almost half of all wine is consumed in another country than where it was produced.

But the last two years, 2022 and 2023, have seen a decline in the internationalisation index. In 2023, it was 45%.

There is no obvious explanation for this. Small harvests or inflationary pressures would likely affect both domestic and international markets, so the answer is probably not there. The OIV pointed to one possible explanation: destocking, particularly in the North American market. Have (primarily) US importers bought too much wine in the two first covid years (2020 and 2021) that they are now releasing into the market, and thus need to buy less from abroad? Possibly. We will see what happens over the next few years.

Some good news for the world wine industry after all

The numbers paint a bleak picture of the world wine industry in 2023. However, there are some bright spots.

With total production dropping significantly in 2023, one might have feared a potential shortage looming. But the parallel drop in consumption negates that. Production and consumption are still in balance, with production exceeding consumption by 5-10%. This difference is needed to satisfy the demand for other uses, such as vinegar production and distillation.

From a producer perspective, the price evolution has also been positive. The average export price for wine reached a record 3.62 euros per litre, an increase of 2% from 2022. Some countries have fared particularly well. Both France and the USA have almost doubled the average export price over ten years. For France, it is now 9.4 euro/l, and for the USA, it is 5.5 euro/l. Most other big exporters have seen a similar evolution over the last ten years. With the exception of Canada.

This is, of course, a clear illustration of the inflationary pressure on the wine industry. And it is, of course, less good news for the consumers.

Srn member links, léoville las cases launches bordeaux's futures campaign with a big price drop—will the wines entice buyers.

The 2023 vintage is strong but not a blockbuster and merchants are increasingly questioning the en primeur  process

  • Mitch Frank ,
  • Cassia Schifter

The premise of Bordeaux en primeurs is fairly simple: The top wineries of the region sell futures the spring after harvest, while the wines are still aging in barrels. They get cash up front to help them cover production costs. The négociants —as well as the retailers, restaurants and consumers they sell the futures to—get first dibs on the wine, theoretically at a lower price than when it’s bottled and released two years later.

There’s five numbers that shatter this concept however—2022, 2021, 2020, 2018 and 2017. According to Liv-Ex, a London-based marketplace that tracks collectible wines, the current prices of the top 500 Bordeaux estates from those five vintages are all below their futures prices. Only the 2019 vintage has proven a worthwhile investment for Bordeaux consumers.

So do the châteaus need to change their approach if they hope for the 2023 vintage campaign to succeed? And will they?

Bordeaux May Not Need Futures Anymore

For several years now, there has been growing evidence the top names in Bordeaux see futures less as a sales campaign and more as a marketing opportunity that allows them to set their price benchmarks. Prices have continued to climb, despite the ups and downs of the global economy. At the same time, château owners are reducing the amount of wine they release as futures. Once they were desperate for cash flow—now they have enough money to age the wine and sell most of it years later, when demand is higher. Château Latour left the futures process entirely in 2012.

Despite the rising prices and diminishing returns, the négociants have continued to buy futures each year. Their motivation has been to hold on to their allotments from the top wineries.

But the négociants may not be able to play that game any longer. Their inventory is at record levels. The pandemic and its aftermath have hurt their bottom lines. And château owners seem to have finally realized this. “The négociants don’t have the money,” one prominent estate director in the Médoc told Wine Spectator . “They are not going to buy their allotments to hold stock this year. That is absolutely clear.”

James Molesworth, Wine Spectator senior editor and lead taster for Bordeaux, weighs in on the wisdom of buying futures .

Do Consumers Need Bordeaux Futures Anymore?

The early buzz from Bordeaux is that the 2023 wines are potentially outstanding, but also hetergeous. It's another mixed bag of a vintage. There’s also word that this year’s campaign will be efficient and prices will come down. Will they drop enough to entice American consumers who no longer need to buy Bordeaux, when there are hundreds of outstanding luxury wines available from regions like Burgundy, Barolo, the Rhône and California? That’s the big question.

While some industry insiders suggested prices could fall dramatically, others offered a word of caution. "For Château Beychevelle , the primeur price is always, and will remain, the cheapest the market can get. So in 2023 our price will be lower than 2022," said Philippe Blanc, general manager of Beychevelle. "But what it will not be is 30 to 35 percent lower, as expected by some of the trade. We have a fair idea of a price that is absolutely acceptable and that our clients would not reject."

In coming weeks, Wine Spectator will report and analyze the latest releases from Bordeaux, compare them to past vintages available now and see how sincere the châteaus are in their plans to woo back wine consumers.

April 30: Léoville Las Cases and Pontet-Canet Start the Campaign

The campaign entered like a lion bearing discounts— Château Léoville Las Cases released its 2023 futures at €138 per bottle ex-négociant, a 40 percent decrease on the 2022 release price of €230 per bottle. Leading U.S. retailers are offering the 2023 for $181 a bottle, $2,172 a case, a 50 percent decrease from the 2022. That puts the wine, which has not been reviewed yet, well below recent vintages on the market.

Château Pontet-Canet has been aggressive on pricing in recent years, but the winery released its futures at €66 per bottle ex-négociant, down 26.7 percent on the 2022 release of €90. Leading retailers are offering 2023 futures at $91 a bottle, or $1,092 per case, a 27 percent decrease from the 2022s.

Is this a sign of a serious effort by Bordeaux to offer value? That depends on whether other top names follow suit.

2023 Futures Prices

These estates represent a selection of leading wineries. Retail prices are an average of trusted retailers we follow. Prices for the 2023s are listed alongside the current prevailing retail price for Bordeaux's recent vintages, so you can measure where the wines are vis-à-vis those currently on retail shelves.
