Gold Reef City – Gold Mine Underground Tour

Gold mine underground tour – gold reef city, underground gold mine tour – gold reef city – johannesburg gold mining in its heyday..

With Ekala – indeed more than simply a set time underground gold tour.

Gold Reef City – Gold Mine History

The Gold Reef City theme park is situated on a 10Ha site which surrounds the then number 14 gold mine shaft at Crown Mines. Indeed, this 19th century gold mine produced 1.4 million kilograms of gold before closing in the 70’s.   The shaft was opened in 1897, thus only 11 years after Johannesburg was established and was part of the gold reef stretching 100 km from east of Boksburg to Randfontein in the west.   This made the Gold Reef City shaft 14 the world’s richest producer of gold, 1.4 million kilograms over its 90 year life span.   This shaft was then at its time, one of the deepest gold mines and worked by 30 000 miners.
Gold mine tour takes you back in time with a first hand look at an old mining town, as well as the vibrant life of such a gold town.
A miner’s language (Fanagalo) was developed in 1910. This then enabled the miners from different cultures and languages to communicate. Fanagolo was simplistic consisting of only 2000 words relevant to gold mining, however 25% of these were swear words.   For miners, this was a tough way to earn a living with heat, dampness, darkness and additionally the ear shattering noise of drills.   Lighting was by candlelight, thus posing a continued risk of explosion due to the presence of methane gas.
Donkeys pulled the gold laden coco pans, staying down the mine for three months before then going blind.   There is gold remaining in the mine, however the price of gold at the time mine closed, made it uneconomical to remove.   The lower levels of the mine are currently flooded – 19th level to the 57th level. Thus, underground gold tours are conducted only up to 5th level.

Gold Reef City – Underground mine gold tour

Thus travelling down a Gold Mine shaft – Gold Reef City
Gold Reef Shaft No 14, in production for 84 years – 1887 to 1971 and indeed, at its time, deepest mine in the world.   Then travel down the Gold Mine shaft (under 5 years not allowed) in a large clangy lift to level 5 ( 720 feet – 226 meters) for a guided gold mine tour.   Walk down tunnels with a hard hat and torch in hand, so experience the tough conditions that gold miners had to endure.   Experience a short burst from a miners drill, this will accordingly give you an understanding as to why miners would go deaf without ear plugs.
Then see the mine manager’s office with the miner’s identity box. This then helped identify missing miners.   Follow the coco pan tracks past the red dynamite box and get a view up a 35 degree slope with little head room and then wooden steps that lead to the surface of the mine in the event of power failure.   Once back on the surface you experience daily demonstrations of pouring molten gold into gleaming bars of bullion and traditional miner’s gumboot dances on visiting the then mine manager’s house.   Additionally see how coins were pressed in the past and a museum dedicated to gold mining.

Gold Reef City – Mining Town Theme Park

The gold mining town has been reconstructed to capture gold rush era times of the then early Johannesburg.   Comprehensive depiction of life in a turn of the century mining town. Including period houses and colourful street entertainment, hence discovering for yourself as to how the gold miners worked and played.   Staff wear period costumes and you can additionally have your picture taken in a period costume. Enjoy a beer in the saloon, then take a stroll through the animal farm or a ride on a steam train.   In addition a penny farthing cycle and a horse drawn carriage around mine village.
The international appeal of the Gold Reef City amusement and theme park with its depiction of nineteenth century gold mining life is seen daily by a large number of tourists.   Johannesburg is one of the most populous cities in Africa and is also the continents economic powerhouse.
Its history is based solely around the discovery of gold and this park brings the gold tour to life with a glimpse into the economic development of Johannesburg and its gold mining. Travel back in time with a first hand look at an old gold mining town.

Short underground mine tour

We did this Attraction as part of the city sightseeing bus tour. Cost for the mine Tours about 100 R. After the underground tour you get to watch a mock gold pour. Fun easy activity as mining is what built Joburg a good way to see some of the history.

mine tour gold reef city

Great Fun and great rides. Just needs more rides that are not scary. It was a good trip and the food selection was great in and out!😉

Wow it is nice to be at the theme Park the games are so amazing and the stuff was very friendly and helped us with our traveling bag.. Supper was amazing at Billy G it was my husbands birthday they did a mini platter for him it was very special

mine tour gold reef city

Parking was a pleasure, to get in was fast and flowed with the helpful security and cashiers. Grounds and amenities very clean all the way through the day. Although long waits for certain rides I do believe that a bit of attention needs to be given to getting people on and off rides this would cut waiting time down so in essence staff training required.

This is a fun place to take younger kids on a visit to Jozi . It is in the heart of the old mining town and focused around the mining history of Jhb. Lots of fun rides and lots to do

My wife and I stayed at the Gold Reef City Hotel with my son and his two daughters aged 9 and 11. The rooms were wonderful and the meals at Barneys Restaurant on site were so good we ate all our meals there. The rides were amazing and considered by my son and his daughters to be equal to those at the theme park in Paris we took them to last year with the added bonus of little or no queues, A unique feature here is the possibility of visiting a gold mine to learn about the extraction and processing of this mineral Would add that the staff at the hotel came to our rescue after we stayed too long at Johannesburg Zoo and missed the last hop on hop off tour bus to get back to the hotel. Thankfully the zoo staff were able to contact the hotel who then arranged for a taxi to collect us.

Near the mine manager's station is a board with rows of 10 holes across and down. Miners placed a peg in a hole for each cocopan filled – most of the men in the early days could not read or write and this was a way around the problem. One cocopan takes 1 ton of rock, and that produces 4 grams of gold.

"Thousands of men have died in this mine, for that gold. In the mid-1900s, 1 500 men died in a methane explosion," adds Mohapi.

There is still gold in the mine, but at the current gold price, it is not profitable to mine. When the mine closed, people showed an interest in buying sections, to open a disco or a restaurant, but mine management was against it.

"So now from the 19th to the 57th levels, the mine is flooded," says Mohapi. What this in fact means is that the water at those levels is no longer pumped out. Normally 2 000 litres of water are pumped out each hour.

Once above ground again, take in the gold-pouring display. 12,5 kilograms of 88% rough gold and 12% silver is poured into a gold bar mould. And you can take it home . . . if you can pick it up with two fingers on your first attempt.

But the gold is just one aspect of Gold Reef City. Go early because there's a lot to do: a turn-of-the-century gold mining town has been re-created on the site, with its charming wood and iron buildings now housing shops and restaurants.

goldreefhotel.jpg

There's the SA Mint where you can buy gold and silver jewellery, watches, medallions and coins, and watch a press making Kruger Rands. There's Gemstone World, the Glass and Crafte Shoppe, the Gumboot Bar Shop and Tobacconist, and there's the town square. Here you can get off your feet and enjoy a five-piece band called Unity, playing throughout the day, while you eat your hamburger.

If you're feeling smart, take in the Hands-On Science Centre, where you can test yourself on various machines and experiments. If you're feeling brave, go on one of 28 rides including the ferris wheel, the earthquake tunnel, miner's revenge, the tower of terror and the river rapids.

For a different experience, hire a penny farthing bike and take a spin around the village.

Gumboot dancing, which the miners began early in the century and which became very competitive between different mines, can be enjoyed in three daily displays at points throughout the town.

If you're feeling you need to get off your feet, take the train which runs around the perimeter of the town. Or hop on one of several horse-drawn carriages that canter around the place.

On the lower terrace of Gold Reef City is the Gold Reef City Hotel with 73 rooms in Victorian decor. The nearby 60-person chapel is popular for weddings, with its beams, alter, pews and organ, originating in the first Dutch Reformed Church in Johannesburg.

On this level you'll also find the Odin Bioscope, showing old-time movies, and the Musical Hall of Fame, exhibiting musical instruments and artefacts. Further down the street you'll find Arms & Outdoors, Craftsmen with Disabilities, and Classic Profiles, a hardwood craftsmen store.

The younger kids are catered for at this level too: there's a farmyard, stables and funfair.

Gold Reef City

Crown mines' no.14 shaft, useful information, description.

Gold Reef City started a theme park about the gold fields and their history. It included an open-air museum with many historic buildings of a 19th century mining town. Then they added a lot of rides, restaurants, a hotel, and even some casinos. Finally, the owner changed, and it is now operated by Tsogo Sun Gaming , who actually do only casinos and hotels. For them, even the theme park is just a by-product, the mine tour is the by-product of the by-product. It seems they are a little uncomfortable with the mining heritage, and somehow streamlined it. Also, they do not actively promote the underground tours, and they are only an add-on on any normal visit. This makes it very expensive if you just want to see the mine. It is necessary to pay the park fee plus the underground mine tour fee to see the mine.

They do not sell any tickets at the entrance any more, which is probably the result of the pandemic. The only way in is by booking online, and as a result, there are no accurate open hours or fees given any more. The website is not very helpful, the details about mine tours are very hard to find and incomplete. We suggest you follow the second link which is a youTube video which gives an impression on what to expect on the tour.

Gold Reef City was built on the grounds of the former Crown Mines . The Crown Mines are among the earliest and most important workings along the Main Reef of Johannesburg. The buildings and part of the mine, mine shaft no 14 to be exact, are included in the park. The tour starts with an audiovisual presentation of the history of the town and mine. A modern day school boy is introduced into the history by an old weathered gold miner. Then several buildings which once belonged to the mine are visited, for example, the Oosthuizen house. Finally, there is an underground part of the tour at a depth of 75 m. Visitors are equipped with a helmet and a miners lamp with its big battery pack, which is quite realistic. Then the tour goes down the shaft with a cage , a mine elevator, to the 75 m level. This shaft is called mine shaft no 14 , but actually, it was the 13th shaft, they skipped this number due to superstition.

The underground tour is quite new and was created artificially for undisclosed reasons. The mine once reached a depth of 3,293 m. Twenty years ago the top level of the mine, which is 220 m below the surface, was used for the underground tours. The new tour now uses a level which was actually never mined. This is not really a problem, as such an underground tour is always more like a museum than like an actual mine. However, the rocks at the 75 m level were not mined because they do not contain gold, so the tour will not show you a gold ore bearing vein. Nevertheless, they try.

The tour explains the structure of the Crown Mines with an old mine cross-section. The show mine was later added to the historic sign in red, which looks a little weird. The tour shows how the ceiling was supported with iron bolts, how light was produced 100 years ago with mercury lamps, how boreholes were drilled for explosives, and how the ore was filled into mine carts and transported out of the mine. The carts were pulled out an inclined plane, and not with the cages, which were used for miners and material.

All in all we were not impressed by the underground tour, it is not worth the money. While the underground tour is not so spectacular, the following gold pouring definitely is. Molten gold is poured into a form, to create a gold bullion. There are very few gold mines on Earth where you can experience this live.

However, if you are not interested in the theme park or are dumped by the gambler in your family while he loses all your money, this is not worth the money.

Gold Reef City’s History

The Gold Reef City theme park is located on the premises of an old gold mine, Crown Mine’s shaft number 14. The park’s theme is focused on the gold rush era in Johannesburg, which started in 1886 in the Witwatersrand. Many prospectors flooded the area and shaft number 14 opened in 1887. Crown Mines shut shaft 14 down in 1971. The gold rush era led to the establishment of Johannesburg, the City of Gold or Egoli.

Who Created the Gold Reef City Theme Park?

Ben Schutte and the Krok brothers created the theme park in 1987. It started as just a mine tour, but they introduced thrilling rides. When apartheid ended in 1994, the park expanded because of the expanded market.

Gold Reef City Theme Park Rides

To do the thrill rides at Gold Reef City theme park, you must be at least 1.3 meters tall. For some rides, children under the height requirement can do the ride as long as an adult accompanies them.

Thrill Rides

The adventurous ride at the theme park includes:

  • Raging River Rapids:  The only ride restricted to children under 1.1 meters. It’s a scenic ride through several caves and old waterfalls while skimming on raging rapids.
  • The Jozi Express:  This ride moves you across treetops and mine dumps with stunning views of Johannesburg and its city centre.
  • Runaway train : This train increases your adrenaline by speeding down the train tracks of Thunder Mountain.
  • Tower of Terror : This terrifying ride takes you up slowly before you drop 50 meters at a speed of approximately 100 km/hour into an open mine shaft. Not for the faint-hearted!
  • Dreamboat : This is not a leisurely boat ride! The boat swings higher and higher until you experience it flying at a 180-degree angle.
  • Golden Loop:  Another rollercoaster ride! This one speeds up to 85 km/hour in 3 seconds before taking you through a loop and back.
  • Anaconda : The Anaconda is one of the most popular rides at Gold Reef City theme park. Although the ride is short, you slither along various twists and turns at high speeds – just like an Anaconda.
  • The High-Flying Maverick : If you’ve ever wanted to pilot a plane, this is the ride for you. This ride is all about speed, twists and turns!
  • The log ride : At first, you float along gently before climbing Thunder mountain, accelerating, turning and dropping. You will get wet with this ride.

Not all rides are open every day. If there is a specific ride you want to try, rather phone ahead to make sure it is working when you want to visit.

Rides for The Less Adventurous Visitors

The theme park offers slower, more relaxing rides for those who are not thrill-seekers. These rides include:

  • Giant wheel:  This is the largest Ferris wheel in South Africa and features 21 gondolas. It moves at a speed of 11 km/hour.
  • Mermaid:  Beautiful coral shells spinning and turning on the ocean floor.
  • Lazy boats : Slowly and gently float along in a boat while enjoying the jungle around the stream. Beware of getting wet!

The Giant Wheel at Gold Reef City theme park

Rides for Small Children

The kiddies area has some slower and safer rides for toddlers, including

  • bumper cars
  • spinning tea cups and saucers
  • the golden wave – spinning baskets lifting in the air
  • balloon wheel, a mini Ferris wheel
  • the pit stop where kids can try driving a cute little car
  • shongololo – a rollercoaster for the little ones
  • a carousel ride with horses.

Did you know? South Africans call giant, green centipedes Shongolos.

Gold Reef City Theme Park Activities

You can find a map of the rides and activities in the Gold Reef City theme park  here . If you’re not into thrilling rides, Gold Reef City still has many other activities to take part in, including:

Museums Inside Gold Reef City Theme Park

You’ll love visiting the theme park if you’re a history buff. There are several historic buildings and experiences to visit at the theme park.

Underground Mine Tour

You can spend the day learning about Johannesburg’s mining history by doing an authentic underground mine experience while seeing a live gold pour. You can purchase your ticket for the Gold Reef City underground tour when you collect your ticket at the entrance of the park. You’ll get a special armband indicating that you’ve paid the fee for the gold mine tour.

The mineshaft for the underground mine tour

The Gold Reef City gold mine tour takes place between 9:30 and 16:00 on the days the park is open. As part of the underground mine tour, you will go 75 metres down an open mine shaft to experience the cold air in the mine and touch the rocky surface below.

The experience includes you sieving through water and pebbles to have a gold-panning experience looking for your own nuggets of gold.

Train Museum

The park also has a unique train museum with one of the world’s last bullion coaches. Before it was retired, the bullion coach carried gold between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban from 1911 to 1967. It contains sleeping quarters, bathroom and kitchen facilities.

Museum Houses

Other museums include the historical mine or heritage houses that depict life in the early 1900s in Johannesburg. The museum houses in the park include the Oosthuizen House museum , which is the perfectly restored family home of Emily Oosthuizen. Emily and her family moved to South Africa during the gold rush in South Africa. When you visit the house, you can see how they lived, went to school and enjoyed music lessons.

Olthaver House - Childs room

Another museum house is the Olthaver House , the original Mine Manager’s residence. This house has an authentic bioscope showing what life was like during the gold rush era in South Africa.

Crush Museum

The Crush Museum displays photographs showing visitors how the miners lived and worked in the 1800s.

The Gold Reef City Heritage Tour

To make the most of your time at the theme park, consider doing the Heritage tour with an experienced guide . Your tour guide will take you to three museum houses, do the underground mine tour and witness the gold pouring.

Games at the Gold Reef City Amusement Park

Throughout the park, you can find stalls offering a variety of games, from catching a frog, popping a balloon or throwing balls into bottles or other vessels. If you are successful, you get a cute, soft toy! The games are fun; you can pay for these using cash or a credit card.

The 4D movie experience must not be missed! The experience will stimulate all your senses with sensory elements, such as water squirts, gusts of wind and leg ticklers. The seats are hydraulic and move around. You’ll feel like you are part of the movie you’re watching!

Other Facilities at The Gold Reef City Amusement Park

The Gold Reef City Store

The theme park also offers several other facilities:

  • Parties:  You can have a kiddies party here. Imagine how the kids will enjoy all the rides and activities the park offers.

  • Unique souvenirs:  They will automatically take your photo while you ride the Anaconda, Tower of Terror, Jozi Express, Shongololo, Raging River Rapids and The Log Ride. You can immediately buy a printed photo and even get a download link to your digital photo. You can have your photo printed on a key ring, fridge magnet or thermal mug.
  • Other souvenirs : The 4D Theatre Gift shop sells various souvenirs, from toys to clothing.

Places to Eat

You won’t go hungry at the theme park as there are many restaurants and food stalls to choose from, including a Wimpy, Panarotti’s, Barney Restaurant and Bar. Fast food options include Sausage Saloon, Chip & Dip and Mochachos.

Little shops sell snacks like cotton candy, sodas, and candy. There is a lovely little ice cream stall near the central train station, but you can find ice cream shops throughout the park.

Jozi, the City of Gold, Joburg, Egoli …  No matter what you choose to call South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg has many faces and an indomitable spirit, shaped by its short but rich history – from its early gold-mining origins and the scars of apartheid, to uprisings, democratic elections and its growth as an African finance and business hub.

(Image: City Sightseeing)

Wondering where to start exploring this gritty metropolis? Simply hop onto City Sightseeing’s red bus – the easiest, most convenient way to see everything this multicultural melting pot has to offer.

This is a tale of two cities: no visit to Jozi is complete without a trip to Soweto – originally created as the Southwestern Townships, but now part of the greater metropolitan municipality. If your time is limited, dip into the  City Sightseeing route  of your choice. But to get the full picture, set aside a day or two for three interlinking tours: the  Johannesburg Green Tour , the  City Tours  and the  Soweto extension tour .

Suburban bliss

Start your itinerary in the commercial hub of Rosebank, with the circular Green Tour. Hop on at STOP 1 near the Gautrain station and  The Zone @Rosebank  mall, and soon you’ll be looping through some of the city’s prettiest, leafiest suburbs. In summer, you’ll quickly understand why Johannesburg has a reputation as one of the world’s largest urban forests.

mine tour gold reef city

Simply sit and watch the world go by from the open-top bus, or hop off at stop 2,  Zoo Lake , where you can hire a paddle boat and row to the island with its many species of waterfowl. Stop 3 is at the sprawling  Johannesburg Zoo  (residents nearby can famously hear the lions roar), while the  Ditsong National Museum of Military History  (stop 4) has displays and artefacts relating to all the wars South Africa has been involved in.

Stop 5 is  Constitution Hill , home to South Africa’s proud Constitutional Court and a former prison complex – now a museum – where famous struggle leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Joe Slovo and Albertina Sisulu were once incarcerated.

Urban impressions

For an authentic taste of inner-city Jozi, use Constitution Hill as a springboard for the next part of your adventure: City Sightseeing’s City Tour. The historic  mining district  is your first destination (a href="https://www.citysightseeing.co.za/en/joburg/mining-district-walk">STOP 10 ) on this route. From here, it’s on to the central business district and Africa’s tallest skyscraper, the  Carlton Centre  (STOP 11), once home to the glamorous five-star Carlton Hotel. Hop off and head straight to the deck at the top – the views will make for a lasting Joburg memory.

mine tour gold reef city

The  James Hall Museum of Transport  at stop 12 ties together a century of transport history. Then, it’s on to  Gold Reef City  (STOP 13), with an underground gold-mine tour, a popular theme park, two hotels, restaurants, movies, entertainment and more.

Sights of Soweto

From Gold Reef City, either continue on your City Tour, or hop on the live-guided  add-on minibus tour to Soweto  for a three-hour snapshot of arguably the world’s most famous township. Soccer fans will immediately recognise the iconic Zulu clay pot-shaped FNB Stadium.

Marvel at the enormous Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the world’s third-largest medical facility with around 3 200 beds; reflect on apartheid and its tragic human toll at the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum in Orlando West; and then take in the colourful Orlando Towers (hop off here if the idea of bungee jumping, ziplining or abseiling appeals!).

The Soweto tour also takes you to Vilakazi Street,  Soweto’s most visited thoroughfare , to walk in the footsteps of two former residents and revered South African Nobel Peace Prize winners: former president Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

More city sights

The Soweto tour ends back at Gold Reef City, from where you may resume your City Tour. Stop off at the  Apartheid Museum  (stop 14). Exhibitions, photographs, film footage and artefacts chronicle the rise – and fall – of this odious system of institutionalised segregation.

mine tour gold reef city

Continue to the SAB World of Beer in revitalised Newtown (stop 15). Hop off for a beer tour – and toast hard-won democracy.

From here, there are two more stops: the fascinating  Origins Centre  at the University of the Witwatersrand (the world’s only museum of modern humankind; stop 16), and The Grove (stop 17), a must-visit on Saturdays when the trendy Neighbourgoods Market is in full swing.

Easy access

City Sightseeing’s red bus tours and Soweto add-on offer an easy, safe and relaxed way to see the City of Gold. For added convenience, there’s a  free shuttle service  from certain hotels in Sandton and Melrose to the Rosebank ticket office.

Buy your tickets online and save. Your one-day ticket (R180) and two-day ticket (R280) both include all stops on the Green Tour and the City Tour, as well as the hotel shuttle.

Add the Soweto component, and your one-day combo including all stops comes to R430 and the two-day combo to R530.

The  3-for-1 Kids’ Special  (valid on weekends, public holidays and school holidays, from 1 May to 8 October) allows two kids under 18 to hop on free with a paying adult.
