What is Cruise Control with brake function? Is this automatic distance controlled cruise control, where the car applies the brakes when you approach a car in front? Or is is BMW speak for standard cruise control? On my recent test I was approaching a car in front and the car would have driven into the back of the car in front had I not braked. With the green button adjacent to the hazard light switch I thought this was the control for the warning on getting close to the car in front.  

When you enable the cruise control it is an adaptive cruise control in fact. It will read the distance to the car in front via the camera and it will adapt its speed by breaking/accelerating alone. When/if the traffic comes to a stop, the car will slow down by itself till a complete stop and it will start by its own when the traffic moves. If the car is standing still more than a few seconds the automatic brake will kick in and the car will only move if you will accelerate. The adaptive cruise control can be turned off and only a regular CC can be enabled, via settings.

I am looking at the brochure specs for 2019MY, the Classic model does not appear to have cruise fitted, whilst the Sport & the Exclusive have “cruise control with brake function” to fit cruise as an option to the Classic requires the “Driving assistant pack” which includes “Active Cruise Control” so I’m a touch confused is the standard cruise on the Sport & exclusive is actually Active cruise or not. The car I had on test a 2018 car had cruise but would have rammed the back of a car in front had I not intervened! I suspect that “Cruise control with brake function” is not active or adaptive, but what is the “brake function”?  

Cruise with brake will slow you down going down a hill to keep to the set speed . Without it the car could go over the set speed . Adaptive cruise will adjust the speed to keep the distance from the car in front . Hope this helps.

Active cruise control is the following - "As well as maintaining a set speed, the camera-based active cruise control system regulates the distance from the vehicle in front on busy roads and motorways. The system operates between 18 - 87 mph." Hope this helps.  

I have a 2022 F60 with the driver assistance package but not the adaptive cruise control with stop and go. What what I need is to find out if my Mini could be retrofitted have the ACC.

Which Used Mini Cooper Trim Is Right for Me?

The 2018 Mini Cooper has three trims: base, S, and John Cooper Works. The base and S trims are available in all three body styles: two-door hardtop, four-door hardtop, and two-door convertible. The John Cooper Works trim is available only in the two-door hardtop and two-door convertible body styles.

The base trim comes well-equipped, and the base engine easily handles most daily driving needs. The S trim has a much peppier engine. Performance-minded shoppers will want the top-of-the-line John Cooper Works trim. In addition to a 228-horsepower engine, it comes with a sport exhaust system and a sport-tuned suspension.

When it was new, the Mini Cooper was available with several option packages, so you may find models with additional features. For instance, the Premium package adds a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and a panoramic sunroof, while the Technology package features an 8.8-inch display and navigation.

• Mini Cooper base: The base trim comes with a 134-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a six-speed manual transmission, synthetic leather upholstery, a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, enhanced smartphone integration, six speakers, Bluetooth, a USB port, automatic climate control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic headlights, a rearview camera, and parking sensors. This trim comes in all three body styles. A six-speed automatic transmission is available.
• Mini Cooper S: The S trim also comes in every body style, and it features a 189-horsepower turbocharged engine paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission or an available six-speed automatic. Sport seats, driving modes, and LED fog lights are standard.
• Mini Cooper John Cooper Works: The performance-oriented John Cooper Works trim has a 228-horsepower turbocharged engine and a six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic is available. Its standard features include a sport exhaust system, a sport-tuned suspension, and Brembo brakes.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the two-door 2018 Cooper the highest rating of Good in five crashworthiness tests. Properly equipped 2018 Coopers earned the second-highest rating of Advanced for front crash prevention. Base trims equipped with the Fully Loaded package received the second-lowest rating of Marginal for how well its headlights illuminate the road. All other trims received the worst rating of Poor.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not performed crash tests on the 2018 Mini Cooper.

What's New for 2020?

The Signature trim, available on the Hardtop model, adds extra features such as a seven-speed automatic transmission, LED headlights and fog lamps, and Mini's Active Driving Assistant, which includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and automated emergency braking. A cloth and faux-leather upholstery package in a two-tone black and gray theme joins the options list, as do new 18-inch two-tone wheels with run-flat tires.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2020 Mini Cooper Hardtop / Convertible starts at $24,250 and goes up to $34,750 depending on the trim and options.

We recommend the Mini Cooper Hardtop three-door with the Iconic package. Ringing in at $30,500, this configuration gives you the sportiness for which Mini is known and a vehicle that's well equipped. With the three-door, you have two rows of seating and limited space, but let's face it, no one buys a car called Mini for the space. The Iconic package comes with leather upholstery, Apple CarPlay integration, and heated seats. The bigger engine costs another $4000, and the Convertible costs another $5000, but a well-equipped base model gives you everything you need while retaining the Mini character.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The standard engine is a turbocharged 134-hp 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, which provides plenty of pep in this small, lightweight vehicle. All of the Minis in this line come with front-wheel drive and the brand's signature go-kart-inspired handling. These Minis are responsive and quick regardless of the engine, but S models come with a turbocharged 189-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder. With the larger engine, the S proved to be a little more than a second faster than the 1.5-liter engine in our zero-to-60-mph test, clocking in at 6.2 seconds. We found the automatic transmission shifts well, but the manual transmission is still our favorite. The firm suspension lends itself to enthusiast-oriented driving, which can make the Mini Cooper exciting, but it can be unforgiving on rough roads.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The three-cylinder engine in the entry-level Mini Cooper three-door, five-door, and convertible rings in the same EPA-estimated fuel efficiency for each model. That engine registers highway fuel economy of 36 mpg. With the three-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual, we managed 38 mpg during our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test route.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Mini's interior is charmingly quirky, but at the cost of user-friendliness. Rear-seat passenger space is tight in the Hardtop and Convertible models, but front-seat occupants will find little reason to complain. The Convertible model's power top will fold flat in 18 seconds to unlock the joy of unlimited headroom. Too bad its trunk is tiny. Hardtop models offer far more practicality inside their hatchback bodies. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and heated front seats come standard on the Mini Cooper, and a leather interior is optional. The Hardtop model's trunk also is quite small, offering room for just three carry-on suitcases in our testing. But drop the rear seats, and there's room for 12. The five-door Hardtop offers more space for cargo with the rear seats folded, but the Convertible offers less.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The base model of the 2020 Mini Cooper is scantily equipped and requires you to spend a lot more in order to get a little more technology. It comes standard with Bluetooth connectivity and a 6.5-inch infotainment screen nestled in the signature Mini circular center console. SiriusXM satellite radio, an 8.8-inch display, Apple CarPlay integration, and wireless phone charging are all optional.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have tested the 2020 Mini Cooper, but the 2019 model was an IIHS Top Safety Pick . The 2020 Mini Cooper comes with standard automated emergency braking and offers adaptive cruise control and park assist. Key safety features include:

Message: Cannot Activate Cruise Control

I had "Cannot Activate Cruise Control" message on the display today. Tried it a couple of times before it would work and activate. Has anyone seen this before or ideas what would cause this?  

Going to slow? There is a minimum speed you have to be going before you can activate it.  

Minimum set speed of 20 MPH in my case (UK)  

Do you have active cruise? I find this fails sometimes when there is low sun or bright light directly on the car, camera cannot get a fix on any objects ahead.  

No its standard cruise control. I was doing about 70mph in sixth gear. It's quite happy working at 30 mph on roadworks near me. Normal operating conditions. It has worked multiple times since. I was worried it was a sign of impending doom. No other warning lights and everything works normally. Odd.  

It just happened to me again now. Normal speed, two messeges: … keep your distance … cannot be activated Any idea?  

The only thing I have seen deactivate standard cruise is when any of the anti skid systems kick in, so when driving through large puddles or on icy/slippery surfaces. I suppose it is a good idea for this to happen as they car wants you to take control.
