Monkey World
Monkey World is not a zoo but a primate rescue centre. The 65-acre park is home to more than 250 monkeys, chimpanzees, orang-utans, gibbons and lemurs.
Longthorns, Wareham, BH20 6HH ( Google map ) Tel 01929 405414 www.monkeyworld.org
Visiting the park helps to support the centre’s rescue operation – It does not receive any outside funding, and yet is known as the world’s biggest primate rescue centre of its kind, assisting governments worldwide to stop the black market trade in endangered primates.
There’s plenty to do at Monkey World. There are regular keeper talks throughout the day. The keeper often has food to bring the primates closer. There are three adventure playgrounds, the largest being the Great Ape Play Area at the far end of the park and a couple of cafes. Many picnic areas are situated throughout the park.

Daily itinerary
Day 1 - Arrival at Kushiro
Meeting at the Tokyo Haneda airport 2 hours before our flight to Kushiro, Hokkaido. I recommend to arrive to Tokyo a day or two earlier and settle down in one of Haneda airport hotels just inside the terminal (At Terminal 2 there is Haneda Excel Hotel Tokyu; and at Terminal 3 there is The Royal Park Hotel Tokyo Haneda). Arrival to Kushiro airport on recommended flight (will be sent to the group). You can arrive via Osaka or other cities, but arrival time to Kushiro airport should be no later than 13:00. Upon arrival to Kushiro your guides and drivers will meet you and transfer to our first afternoon photoshoot with Tancho – red crowned cranes until sunset. Just after sunset transfer to our hotel at Tsurui area. Discuss upcoming adventure with your tour leaders at delicious Japanese dinner and soak in traditional and world famous Hokkaido onsen bath.
Day 2 - Tsurui
Today we devote for bird photography. We catch in our compositions the graceful dance of cranes in different locations around Tsurui starting sunrise at the bridge with the views of the steaming river. We continue to Crane Sanctuary to photograph a graceful Tancho Tango around their feeding time. Images your will take are like traditional Japanese ink paintings! There is also a chance we will spot Shima Enaga – cute long tailed tit which recently became a symbol of Hokkaido. And Ural owls hiding in the woods. Just after the quick lunch we proceed to Kusharo lake to photograph whooper swans.
We continue into Akan National Park on the island of Hokkaidō, Japan. Around lake Kussharo we will find lots of minimalistic scenes of single trees. Besides that you can photograph graceful whooper swans at sunset with golden light behind. They spend winter here at hot springs bathing in warm waters of Kussharo lake.
Day 3 - Rausu
We drive to Rausu. From here you can see Kuril islands already! Our main goal in Rausu will be to photograph Steller sea eagle. We take a sea excursion with local bird specialists. Get ready your telephoto lenses to catch magnificent eagle in action! For sunset we plan to visit Notsuke peninsula where you can spot Sika deer and foxes. Another activity is to spot the largest owl in the world in the night – Blakiston’s fish owl. There is one particular lodge that specialise on it’s spotting. Settle in Rausu for one night.
Day 4 - Lake Mashu
Today we have a wonderful sunrise sea cruise into the open ice of Hokkaido! Many Steller’s sea eagles come to sit on the ice and fish, as well as white tailed eagles. You will have at least 2h + opportunity to photograph these beautiful birds very close as they so get used to the fishing boats! Just after the cruise return to hotel for breakfast and packing. Departure towards Biei though magical Hokkaido landscapes.
Arriving to Biei in the evening. Settle down in our hotel in Biei for next 2 nights
Day 5 - Japanese single trees
These are the days we spent most of the time with classical minimal style Hokkaido compositions. We visit iconic “Christmas tree”, Seven stars trees and several other less known spots. Images of Japanese single trees in the snow always remind me of an oriental writing, and they are perfect when printed and framed on the wall.
Day 6 - Sapporo
Sunrise at the famous Christmas tree! We continue exploring Hokkaido by driving further south from Biei towards Sapporo. At sunset we photograph torii gates on top of the rock in the water. Get ready your ND filters to make long exposures, timeless images.
Day 7 - Yudanaka
Transfer from Sapporo city to Chitose airport for the flight departing 10 a.m. from Chitose to Haneda by ANA. Just upon arrival to Chitose we take the train ride to Yudanaka (shinkansen + local train), which will allow us to reach “snow monkeys town” in just 3 hours from Tokyo. Settle down for 2 nights in Yudanaka in traditional Japanese inn with beautiful onsen hot springs.
Day 8 - Japanese macaques
Departure schedule.
20-28 January 2025 - guided by Daniel Kordan
We highly recommend that you get a travel and medical insurance. Your own domestic medical insurance and private health scheme will not cover you whilst you are overseas.
The tour is always dependent on weather, as the weather can indeed be highly unpredictable. Likewise, wildlife sightings dependent on favourable conditions and there is no guarantee that they will appear on a given day.

Renowned landscape photographer, Daniel Kordan, is an explorer at heart. Having realized his passion for photography and traveling at a young age, he now spends his time sharing his vision and the many wonders of the world with people all around him.

2020 Japan Winter Wildlife Photography Tour
February 11th - 27th, 2020
Encounter and photograph the wild and mystical wildlife of Japan, including the charismatic “hot tubbing” snow monkeys (Japanese macaques) in central Honshu. These fun-loving monkeys are curious and human-like, playing, chasing, and even throwing snowballs at each other like little children in a snowball fight.
We’ll travel north to the island of Hokkaido where bird life dominates the winter landscape. The elegant Japanese crane will dance in and out of our lenses while one of the world’s largest raptors, the Steller’s sea eagle, performs in the sky above us. We’ll also have great opportunities for red fox and deer.
Soak in the onsen next to a playful snow monkey, photograph a pirouetting crane, or just simply have tea at one of the many traditional charming ryokans. Japan will be an unforgettable experience—join us in 2020! If you have time, join us on the Snow Leopard Tour pre-Japan.

2020 Japan Winter Wildlife Photography Tour Travel Plans
Tuesday, February 11
Depart US/Canada for Tokyo
Wednesday, February 12 (D)
Arrive in Tokyo any time of day via Narita (NRT) airport. You’ll be met at the airport and guided to the shuttle for a ten-minute ride to the ANA Crowne Plaza Narita .
Enjoy the hotel’s tranquil garden setting or take advantage of the facilities, including a fully equipped health club, indoor swimming pool, and spa with traditional Japanese massage to combat jetlag. Tonight we’ll gather for a group welcome dinner.
Overnight ANA Crowne Plaza Narita
Thursday, February 13 (B)
Today we’ll visit and have lunch in the nearby Narita Village. Narita is known for its famous Narita-san Shinsoji Temple and colorful pagodas. We’ll meander along the quaint, winding old streets lined with wooden restaurants and shops displaying traditional crafts, foods, and souvenirs. After a full day, take the evening to relax.
Overnight at the ANA Crowne Plaza Narita
Friday, February 14 (B, D)
After a good night’s sleep, we’ll travel five hours via private coach to Jigokudani Yaen National Park (Snow Monkey Park). The name Jigokudani, translates to “Hell’s Valley” to describe its eerie atmosphere of steam and boiling water bubbling from the frozen ground. The ominous steep cliffs and wild forest add to the mystery and magic that snow monkeys call home during the winter months.
We’ll observe and photograph monkeys soaking up the watery warmth of hot springs among a snowy, wintery landscape. The snow monkeys, or Japanese macaques , are the only monkeys in the world to live so far north.
We’ll spend three nights at the Korakukan Inn , a rustic mountain inn nearest to the beautiful Jigokudani Yaen National Park in the mountains of the Yudanaka Onsen in Nagano. There are indoor and outdoor hot spring baths for both women and men, and snow monkeys frequently visit the outdoor hot spring baths! There are also two family baths which can be reserved for private use. The snow monkey hot springs can be seen from the hotel’s outdoor hot spring baths.
Saturday, February 15 – Sunday, February 16 (B, L, D)
While staying at the Korakukan Inn, we will take daily walks (10-15 minutes) into the nearby Jigokudani Yaen National Park to photograph the approximately 160 snow monkeys residing there. These intriguing primates love to put on a show for their human admirers. You’ll no doubt witness snowball fights among siblings, territory disputes among the males, babies clinging to their mothers, and other monkey antics. You can get very close to the monkeys as they walk around and sit in the trees or steamy hot springs. This park is between hills, so you’re walking in a very natural environment through the valley.
We’ll overnight at the Korakukan Inn.
Monday, February 17 (B)
In the morning, we’ll enjoy one last visit with the iconic snow monkeys. In the afternoon, we drive back to Tokyo and fly to Kushiro, located on the northernmost island of the Japanese archipelago, Hokkaido.
Upon arrival, we have a short transfer to our accommodation for the next two nights–the ANA Crowne Plaza Kushiro . Adjacent to Kushiro’s Fisherman’s Wharf, our stay at the Crowne Plaza promises to be a memorable experience of high quality of service and elegance. Every room has spectacular views of the harbor and its natural surroundings.
Tuesday, February 18 (B, D)
Today is dedicated to photographing the various birds in the Tsurui-Ito Tancho Sanctuary (Tsurui-mura Reserve). We’re sure to be entertained by the leaping, pirouetting, and trumpeting Japanese (red-crowned) cranes as they carry out their mating rituals. This infectious behavior often spreads through the flock in waves leading to a thrilling display. We can expect to see flocks of 100 or more of these birds at ranges of 30 feet or less.
The red-crowned crane is one of the largest birds in Japan. Because of their red heads, their Japanese name is Tancho (“tan”= red, “cho” = top). These magnificent birds are considered a symbol of luck and longevity.
Other feathered friends we’re sure to encounter include white-naped cranes, white-tailed eagles, and black-eared kites.
We’ll spend another night at the ANA Crowne Plaza Kushiro.
Wednesday, February 19 (B, D)
Today we continue photographing the various birds in the Tsurui-mura before heading out in the evening on our private charter bus to Lake Akan.
We spend the next two nights at Lake Akan Tsuruga Wings Resort Spa . The hotel is renowned for its beautiful views, warm hospitality, sophisticated interiors, and luxurious hot springs facilities.
Thursday, February 20 (B, D)
We consider Lake Akan Tsuruga a “take a breather” location. Enjoy an impressive buffet breakfast and have free time to shop, relax in the hotel’s luxurious hot spring facilities, or explore around this beautiful photogenic village. The main street is lined on both sides with folk art stores and restaurants.
This area is home of the Ainu native people. Watch Ainu dances and listen to the traditional Ainu Jew’s harp, known as the mukkuri, at the Onne Chise in the center of the village. Plan to have a portrait photo shoot with local Ainu in traditional clothing.
We’ll meet up for a mid-afternoon photography workshop and gather again for dinner.
We overnight at Lake Akan Tsuruga Wings Resort Spa.
Friday, February 21 (B, L, D)
After breakfast, we drive to Lake Kussharo by private bus.
Each year hundreds of whooper swans winter in eastern Hokkaido, principally on Lake Kussharo, after migrating from Siberia and northern Mongolia. Although much of the lake is frozen in winter, it’s fed by hot spring water, creating warm temperatures.
The winter white colors of snow and ice make for an excellent backdrop for photographs of these migrating birds.
We spend two nights at Pension Papilio , a quiet inn in the forest with hot spring baths and western-style rooms.
Saturday, February 22 (B, D)
As early morning steam rises from the geothermal hot spots in and around the lake, throngs of whooper swans arrive for their morning feeding. We’ll be there to photograph them in the snowy landscapes around Lake Kussharo. We can expect to catch them landing on the ice, their large black feet spread behind them, as well as in other fanciful and beautiful poses.
Overnight at Pension Papilio
Sunday, February 23 (B, D)
After an early morning shoot with the swans, we’ll pack up and head to the easternmost portion of Hokkaido island, the Shiretoko Peninsula , where we’ll base ourselves out of the town of Rausu for the next two nights. En route, we will stop to photograph the Notsuke Peninsula , a great place to find sea eagles, foxes, and deer.
The Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO world heritage site, and surrounding waters offer a prime example of the interaction of marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Many migratory and threatened seabirds make their home on the ice pack here each winter. We are drawn to the peninsula to capture images of the immense Steller’s sea eagle . These majestic birds have wingspans of over two meters and are one of the heaviest birds in the world weighing in at five to nine kilograms (11 to 20 pounds).
Overnight Rausu Daiichi Hotel , known for its ceramic owls which light up with candles at night, Japanese style, and open-air hot spring baths. As night falls, there is even the possibility of visits by wildlife including deer and fox.
Monday, February 24 (B, D)
We are getting up early (5:00 a.m.!) for an icebreaker boat ride to the edge of the ice pack.
We’ll depart from the port in Rausu followed by playful trail of various gulls, and head out as the sun works its way up over the Northern Territories occupied by Russia. Once at the ice pack we’ll be greeted by numerous Steller’s sea eagles and smaller white-tailed eagles eager for their morning fish breakfast.
Watch these magnificent birds quarrel and fight in the air above you. We’ll be out on the water for approximately 2.5 hours before heading back to port (boat ride is weather dependent, ice conditions can vary).
The afternoon is dedicated to photographing the surrounding Rausu area on the southwest corner of the peninsula facing the Nemuro Strait.
We spend a second night at Rausu Daiichi Hotel.
Tuesday, February 25 (B, D)
For those who can’t get enough of birds on ice, take an optional (extra fee) 5:00 a.m. icebreaker boat ride back out to the ice pack for more eagle photography. We’ll be back at port in time for breakfast and to pack up our things and slowly make our way back to the city of Kushiro via the Notsuke Peninsula.
We spend the night at the ANA Crowne Plaza Kushiro adjacent to Kushiro’s Fisherman’s Wharf. The classic exterior houses a spacious atrium lobby and 180 of the largest guest rooms in Kushiro. The rooms are specially designed for comfort, each of which boasts spectacular views of the harbor and its natural surroundings.
Wednesday, February 26 (B, D)
Today we fly back to Tokyo via Haneda airport.
In the afternoon we’ll take a guided tour in the nearby area by foot or local train. We will be staying in the heart of Tokyo with many, many camera stores to explore. Also nearby are Shinjuku Central Park, Shinjuku Imperial Gardens , Meiji Shrine, Odakyu store, and the fashion ward.
At a farewell group dinner we’ll reminisce over an amazing trip filled with wildlife, hot springs, and good company.
We will overnight at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Tokyo, Shinjuku-ku , located in Shinjuku, a thriving business, shopping, and entertainment district.
Thursday, February 27 (B)
Today we bid goodbye and fly home. Flights can be booked for any time and the hotel will provide limousine bus transfers to either Narita or Haneda airport.

Accommodations for 2020 Japan Winter Wildlife Photography Tour
February 12 -13, 2 Nights ANA Crowne Plaza Narita Located near the airport, complimentary shuttle, bilingual front desk staff, indoor pool, sauna and fitness center.
February 14 – 16 , 3 Nights Korakukan Inn For three nights we’ll stay in a Japanese ryokan. A ryokan is type of traditional Japanese inn that originated during the Edo period. You will find traditional matted floors (tatami), sliding doors, and futons. Most of the ryokan are family owned, basic accommodations.
Korakukan Inn has 12 traditional Japanese-style rooms. The rooms are rustic, yet charming and afford us the luxury to come and go as we please from the monkey park avoiding the 1.6 mile long walking trail. We will store our main luggage and only take a small overnight pack and camera gear to this Inn. The walk can be icy, mostly flat with a couple inclines. We will take the walk slow and our overnight packs will go by 4-wheeler to the Inn. We suggest ice cleats to prevent any falls. Shared bathrooms. Private rooms are very simple with futons on floor. Traditional dinners with mixed western breakfast/Japanese. Lunch is noodle soups with mountain vegetables or spaghetti. This lodge is the best area to stay in to see the monkeys. Helpful Information for 2020 Japan Winter Wildlife Photography Tour
Passport and visa.
You must have a valid passport and an onward/return ticket for tourist/business “visa free” stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for the entire time you’re staying in Japan, and one blank page is required for the entry stamp. Please visit the US Department of State – Bureau of Consular Affairs for the most up to date entry requirements.
VACCINATIONS
Vaccinations are not required for entry into Japan.
CAMERA GEAR
We’ll send a list of suggested camera gear to bring, and Dan will phone each guest to discuss gear prior to departure time.
What to Bring
- Heavy Socks
- Slip-resistant, waterproof winter boots/shoes (spikes/traction aids would be good for bottom of boots/shoes to walk in icy conditions)
- Waterproof jacket/winter coat (Gore-Tex)
- Thermal wear
- T-shirt/long sleeves for layering
- Hand and feet warmers (Hotties)
- Spare batteries for cameras (cold will deplete a charge quick)
- Plug adapter for Japan
- Small overnight bag for Korkukan Inn
Japanese yen
Expect sub-zero temperatures in Hokkaido. It’s very warm inside buildings, so bring layers. Daylight is from 7:00am to 5:00pm. We’ll be photographing from dawn to dusk, taking breaks for meals and to warm up. It could be cold in the mornings!
ACTIVITY LEVEL
Each guest must be able to walk short to moderate distances, carry their own camera gear, and at times walk on ice / inclines. When we arrive at the snow monkey park on the third day, there is an approximate 1.5 mile walk to Korakukan Inn. The walk is mostly flat and not too difficult, but it could be icy, so ice cleats are a must! For easier travel, while at this inn only, we’ll transfer some of our belongings into smaller bags and leave our larger bags behind in a safe storage area. This is really the only area where there will be a fairly long walk. Also access from the Inn to the monkey park can be icy and has inclines (a short distance to walk).
Most of the other locations have minimal walking and the bus can get close to photography areas.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
The Japanese are very quiet and reserved—a very giving group of people. There is not an actual word for “no” in their language; they find it’s too impolite to say. Japan is very clean and safe. When you get out of the cities, especially in Hokkaido, you’ll swear you’re in Minnesota in the winter! There are a lot of dairy farms, and snowmobiling, ice fishing, and wildlife can be seen all around. We’ve had many great opportunities to photograph birds, foxes, and deer on past trips.
We did two photo tours to Japan in 2014 and one tour in 2016. Everyone really enjoyed staying at the Lake Akan resort. However, the drive from the resort to the whooper swans is a long bus ride. So we will still visit Lake Akan—it has its own draws—but have also added a family-owned ryokan, Pension Papilio, which is closer to the swans. We’re including a little more time on Notsuke Peninsula, a great area for photography. On the return to Tokyo, we’ll stay closer to the ‘city action’ and within walking distance to the electronic district where all of the big camera stores can be found. Our early flight back to Tokyo gives us the afternoon to walk around with a guide in the camera district. If you wish to spend an extra night in Tokyo, we can help to book accommodations if needed.
We’ll have private bus transfers between locations. There is a fair amount of driving on this trip, but it is needed to see the different wildlife and birds Japan has to offer.
Internal flights are included between Haneda Airport and Hokkaido. It is a large plane, so there are not usually any carry-on issues. There are two airports in Tokyo: Haneda and Narita. Both are international. Make sure you fly into Narita (NRT) on arrival day, but you can depart from either airport.
Beds will range from a futon on the floor at Korakukan Inn, to low beds, to normal North American style beds. Internet is available throughout the trip.
Onsens are natural hot spring baths. They are found all over Hokkaido. Men and women have separate areas to bathe; all are nude. Some inns will have private baths available. Onsens vary from extremely nice and fancy to basic cement rooms (some indoor, some outdoor). The nicest one we’ll have the opportunity to visit is at Lake Akan. We suggest trying them out! They sure warm you up after a long day outside.
In some of the more remote areas, the inns will serve Japanese food with minimal options. Usually there is enough variety for everyone to find something they like; many have hot soups which are delicious. If they mention western style food, this usually means Italian (pasta or pizza). Both tea and coffee are served everywhere including in vending machines, hot in a can! We’ll eat some meals at low tables sitting on the floor and others at standard tables. Most will be standard. We did not include some meals so you can explore on your own. Also, when we travel to the Snow Monkey area, we will stop at a convenience roadside stop. They are everywhere in Japan along the highways and have lots of options for food and also gift items as well as clean bathrooms (everything is clean in Japan!!). It is usually easier for everyone to choose what to eat at these stops.

Check the itineraries of our photography tours to Japan. You will have a great chance to capture the beauty of every city and landscape of the country.

But also we have time to visit the Kiso Valley, Nara, or experience a day with monks in Koyasan including a tea ceremony. And a day tour to photograph the snow monkeys of Jigokudani . And of course, we don’t forget about the main spots around Fuji Five Lakes as the shrine Chureito Pagoda .
Autumn Photo Tour
As before, we do a tour in the main cities and nature spots. During the fall, we also come to the famous landscape of Nikko Valley . And a visit to the Unesco World Heritage of Shirakawa-Go . There we will spend a few days capturing fall colors and visiting autumn leaves festivals. Both trips have a departure from Narita Airport in Tokyo.
Japanese Alps Photo Tour
Discover Japan during winter with our two trips during January & February. Join both tours and get a 500€ discount!
In our Japanese Alps photography tour, you will capture the magic of Shirakawago or Gokayama. Also, we will have time to photograph snow monkeys at Jigokudani Park, hidden torii gates, and waterfalls… an epic adventure that of course also includes Mount Fuji photo sessions.
Hokkaido Photo Tour
During the Hokkaido photography tour, you will enjoy beautiful minimalistic landscapes . Also, Hokkaido offers you the best Japanese wildlife photography trip . We will do a full circle around the northern Japanese Island. A different tour than any European winter tour, like a Norway trip. A tour to capture the red-crowned cranes and whooper swans, and the unique nature of the northeast island of the country.
Inside a Japan Photo Tour
Do you doubt when to do a Japan Photo Tour? As specialists in trips to Japan , we can suggest the best season for your workshop. We have prepared different routes to photograph the main spots. So you can enjoy the beauty of Japan during spring, autumn, or winter .
Autumn & Spring are based on a round trip around the main cities in Central Japan. We will visit the regions of Hakone, Yamanashi, Tochigi, Nara, or Aichi as examples. During these trips, you will be able to take pictures of Tokyo & Kyoto. But also the Snow Monkeys, Koyasan, Osaka. Both have different itineraries, as each season has different things to offer.
Also, all our Japan Photography Tours have included some nights in an Onsens or Ryokans . This way, you can experience also the traditional Japan. Not only when we visit the Torii Gates or the temples & sanctuaries around the spots.
Best season to visit the Land of the Rising Sun
What do you want to see on your next Japan Photo Tour? Japan can be enjoyed all year, but each season has different things to do. If we need to define our group:
- Spring we focus on Japanese Culture and the cherry blossoms
- Autumn on the nature of central Japan.
- Winter on minimalistic landscapes and typical villages.
But all have much more things to do, check our itineraries and write us if you have any doubts about which one to choose.
Private Photo Trips
As an international operator, we also organize handmade Japan Photo Tours . Our photographer guides and locals guides will help you to create your trip. So you can choose to do any similar itinerary that we show you here. Or we can prepare a special itinerary for you in a private photo workshop.
Also, we will choose special accommodations ( like hot-spring or Onsen ). And define all characteristics you will prefer for your holidays in Japan.
Any of our tours are for everyone interested in visiting sightseeing photogenic scenes . We also go to far locations from the tourist spots of Japan. Even if you are not a photographer, we will bring you to hidden gems. For example, we can suggest places in the Shikoku, Kanazawa, or Kyushu regions.
We customize your private photography tour to visit your favorite spots at the right time. Thanks to our experience, we will offer you infinite possibilities to choose from during your next trip to Japan. If you are a photo lover, you will the photo opportunities that Japan has. But also if you do not need to capture with your camera you will experience breathtaking moments and capture Japanese architectural masterpieces.
Write to us, and we will prepare a perfect private photo tour. We can include the top locations we have in mind or discover new ones according to your wishes. Choose your favorite city, spots, or Prefectures and we will help you to create the best itinerary for you.
Why the trips are not by train with the Japan Rail Pass?
As we look to be at the right moment in the perfect place, moving by car it’s the cheapest and most comfortable way. Also, as our trips are based on groups of 4 persons with a guide, we move with small vans around Japan. This way we can adapt the schedules to our own interests. If we decided to use the JR Pass and travel by Shinkansen bullet train, we not will have the same freedom.
Can you take pictures in Japan?
For sure, you can take photos in all public places in Japan. You just need to ask for permissions if you have commercial purposes as in most countries of the world. And like other places, you can find the international signs that could tell you to not take photos. If you are not sure, kindly ask a local. Take a look at our gallery of Photos in Japan!
Can you travel now?
Yes, with the actual situation enter to Japan is possible for almost all countries. You can keep your seat now as bookings are going fast!
You will need to travel with an official travel agency and get the ERFS certificate. We have our own local agency in Japan, so with us, travel to Nippon is easy!
Which currency is used?
In Japan, the currency is the Japanese Yen.
Don’t think that you can pay everywhere with a credit card in Japan. Although you can’t pay in euros , you can convert once there to the Japanese Yen at the same airport. We suggest changing around 300-500 euros or dollars and use your travel credit card there.
How much money will you need for your trip?
You should plan to spend around ¥3,000 ($28) per day on our photo tours in Japan , which is the average daily price based on meals that are not included.
Why is food so cheap ?
It´s because the purchasing power and standard of living of the Japanese are very high. You can buy a decent meal with a low budget . As a basic necessity, Japanese cuisine is relatively inexpensive compared to the level of life in Japan.
Do I need a Visa to enter?
To enter Japan you need a passport and a visa unless you are from a country that is visa-exempt . In case you need it, the Japanese government is going to introduce the e-visa. In case is not currently implemented, you will need to visit the Japanese embassy or consulate to apply for a visa .
What month is the cheapest fly?
According to different flight searches, the cheapest months to take a flight to Japan is from January to April. Although in March is cherry blossoms, you can find economic flights. The high season is summer, so even in November-December, you can find good deals.
Why is tipping rude in the country?
The Japanese culture is based on the belief that the price includes already good service . This way, pay extra can be considered insulting. Respect the cultural rules, even if it looks strange for you. Simply be polite , and say thanks to the waiter or waitress after enjoying the service.

Well-used and complete photography tour, with good photography scenes
Andrew Teakle
The spring tour through Japan was absolutely full of wonderful photographic opportunities and great camaraderie. With only four participants we all got to know each other well and got to see the most beautiful sites. Eduardo was easy-going with good humour (and excellent music taste) and tremendous photographic experience. The accommodations were excellent and this has to be the best value Japan Cherry Blossoms tour on the market.
This Japan tour was not only well organized, but also a lot of fun. We had a great group of photographers with a lot of camaraderie and humor visiting great sites, we would never have found without Eduardo’s fine insight. Highly recommended!
PhotoWorldTour’s JapanSakura tour was both a highlight and a sustained happy pill. In the course of a few days, we traveled in Spanish through large parts of Japan’s most beautiful areas. Eduardo – as well as his lucky mascot Missifou – is the best tour guide I’ve had. Relaxed, funny and so democratically oriented that we called him “our glorious leader” without being the least bit ironic. We stayed in good hotels and got up before sunrise to get the best possible photos. Then a small pause before the next image sequence..etc. Collectively, we covered larger parts of central Japan in a way that we certainly wouldn’t have been able to do without his knowledge. This was fun, simply 🌹
Andreu Ferrer
Private trip with wide freedom of movement. Eduardo’s professionalism turns any request into something easy and any problem into a trifle.

I did two Greenland trips with World Photo Travels and I was absolutely impressed by the outstanding service provided by the company's founder Mike Reyfman. Both times the planning and expectations for the adventure were very well communicated and executed. Mike provided sufficient pre-departure information and helpful tips for the participants to properly prepare for the sailing photo tour in the Wild North.
Everything was handled perfectly during the trip. The boat, the crew, the guides, and the itinerary they chose were excellent. Everybody did their best to make the most out of the trip. It was a great Arctic adventure with comfortable onboard accommodations and elaborate cuisine. There were two photo guides so we had plenty of opportunities for one-on-one feedback and professional help and tips to boost our photography skills. The shooting locations and times were carefully selected; the guides and the boat captain worked as a team choosing the best route and navigation to give us paramount vantage points for shooting.
World Photo Travels is not just about photography but the experiences, the people, great social time, and lots of fun!
Svalbard 2023
Great trip. Mike worked constantly with the crew and expedition guides to maximize our opportunities at all times of day and "night" - photo opportunities 'round the clock in the Arctic midnight sun - even waking us for 0-hour zodiac excursions. Can't say enough about the ship crew and the tour leads in making it the best trip possible.

A boat river tour to see long-nosed monkeys, one of 'world's ugliest animals'
To see long-nosed monkeys from the state of Sabah in Malaysia, guests can take a boat tour on the Kawa Kawa River.
The boat would stop for about 15 minutes so that guests to see and take photos of these animals from afar, in the wild.
Pablo, a boat driver, said this type of monkey-watching tourism has existed for more than 10 years.
"Long-nosed monkeys and other animals live naturally in the riverside forests, without human impact," he said.
Proboscis monkeys live mainly in trees, looking for their own food. Favorite foods are leaves, flowers, seeds and insects. Because the leaves do not have many nutrients, monkeys use them all day to eat, making their bellies bigger. In addition, this species has the ability to chew cud like a cow.
Male monkeys have larger noses than females, which can be up to 18 cm long. The long nose is what attracts mates during the breeding season.
Thanks to its nose, proboscis monkeys can make loud cries and howls.
At about 5 years old, female monkeys will enter their reproductive period. Baby monkeys encounter many difficulties and can become prey for crocodiles, lizards, eagles, and pythons.
In addition, they are also hunted by humans. Today, the number of proboscis monkeys has decreased significantly and are listed as an endangered animal in the Red Book.
According to local people, this monkey is quite shy. When they sense danger, they often hide in the bushes and turn their backs.
Visitors are not allowed to get close to th e species and can only watch them from the boat, at a distance of about 7-10 m.
The scenery along the riverbanks still retains its wild landscape with dense tropical forests.
Panoramic view of the Kawa Kawa River winding between green forests.
The journey to see long-nosed monkeys usually lasts nearly two hours. It usually takes place 75 km from Kota Kinabalu city, capital of Sabah state. The package tour price is 280 ringit (US$59) per person, including a boat, a car from the city, a tour guide, meals and travel insurance.
There are currently no direct flights from Vietnam to Kota Kinabalu. Visitors arriving in Kuala Lumpur can fly to Kota Kinabalu via Malaysia Airlines, which has daily flights there.

Take a vacation to Japan on one of our three Japan Photography Expeditions. These three itineraries offer travelers searching for the perfect Japan nature photography tour three options to choose from. Step outside Tokyo for picture-perfect views of Mount Fuji and photos of curious snow monkeys. Journey through Hokkaido for memorable pictures of the northern island's must-see wild birds and animals. Or combine the two into one of the best Japan Birding and Wildlife Photography Tours you'll ever find. The first tour, our Beyond Tokyo - Mount Fuji and Snow Monkeys Winter Photography Tour is a 5-day itinerary that takes you outside Japan's bustling capital to capture on film two of Honshu's most celebrated natural wonders: Mount Fuji and its surrounding area, and the adorable Snow Monkeys of the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. The tour begins with a Mount Fuji Photography Tour in the picturesque Fuji Five Lakes region, which offers some splendid views of the iconic mountain and other beautiful nature scenes. Each of the lakes has its own natural charms, including towns with preserved Edo-era buildings and groves of ancient trees covering the hilly landscape. After, we travel to Yudanaka Onsen in Nagano, stopping over at Matsumoto to see the imposing Matsumoto Castle, and again at Obuse, which preserves the woodblock print artworks of the Edo-era artist Hokusai at the Hokusai museum. Finally, at Yudanaka Onsen, we visit the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. The snow monkey is also known as the Japanese macaque and can be photographed bathing in a natural hot spring. The second tour is our Charms of Hokkaido Birding and Wildlife Photography Tour - a 9-day Hokkaido trip carefully crafted to contain some of Japan's most famous wild birds and animals. The tour begins in Tsurui - a town in the Kushiro region known as the top spot for viewing the Tancho Red-crowned crane. Find that perfect picture of this elegant and iconic bird in feeding or roosting grounds at Tsurumidai, the Ito Tancho Crane Sanctuary, and Otawa Bridge. The tour continues to Lake Kussharo: a large lake in the Akan-Mashu National Park where the gorgeous white Whooper swan can be seen roosting near a local open-air hot spring. We explore around Mount Iou - a local active volcano - before proceeding to the Notsuke Peninsula to search for the Ezo Deer and Hokkaido Fox. Next, in Rausu on the Shiretoko Peninsula, we look for Blakiston's Fish Owl, one of the largest owls in the world and a sacred bird to the indigenous Ainu people. We also take a nature cruise to view the assorted variety of sea birds that can be seen off the coast of the peninsula. In Aidomari, which is the furthest point up Shiretoko you can travel by car, we can see the colorful Harlequin Duck among other sea birds of the region. We take cruise off the coast of Nemuro for more opportunities to see the countless native birds of the area. Over Lake Furen we can find the enormous Steller's Sea Eagle and White-Tailed Eagle in large groups around the brackish lake. After, we explore the Kiritappu Wetland - a Ramsar Site that hosts cranes, ducks, swans, and other local birds in winter. And if, while reading, you feel like you might like to try both, than the final tour is the best choice for you. Our Hokkaido and Beyond - Birding and Wildlife Winter Photography Tour, is a perfect combination of these two itineraries, including both the experiences on Honshu island with Mount Fuji and the Snow Monkeys, as well as the best birds and wildlife of Hokkaido - the Red- Crowned Crane, Whooper Swan, Steller's Sea Eagle, Blakiston's Fish Owl, and countless more of Hokkaido's collection of wild birds. Choose one of our professionally crafted Japan Photography Expeditions, and take in the beautiful nature and wildlife of Japan through the lens of your camera. Our tours include comfortable transportation on one of our private coaches and the assistance of an expert Japan birding guide. Please browse our itineraries for more information.

The Adventure Begins
After meeting at Tokyo Haneda Airport, we waste no time in Tokyo. We drive directly for Mt. Fuji ( a must see and photograph for anyone visiting Japan). We will photograph the snow-capped world heritage site FujiSan, at the best golden hour spots. We will tour around the Fuji five lakes stopping to film in the Sea of Trees Jukai the forest on the northwestern flank of Mount Fuji. The forest is 30 square kilometers of hardened lava laid down by the last major eruption of Fujisan in 864. The trees and plants grow in natural volcanic planting pots and peat moss, in a volcanic forest there is no soil. The forest is extremely photogenic, especially in winter with few visitors and school trips. The forest is very dense and the porous lava absorbs sound, adding to the solitude.

After shooting sunrise on Mt. Fuji and breakfast we depart for Suwa Taisha Grand Shinto Buddhist Shrine Complex, it is said to be the oldest shrine complex in existence across Japan. There are over 10,000 Suwa shrines across Japan, and we will visit the head shrine and photograph its precious national treasures, plus we will surely film Shinto maidens and priest in their traditional wear. Then we will drive under an hour and enter the world of the Samurai at Matsumoto Castle, locally known as Crow castle or Kurasu-Jo, due to its grandeur poised black exterior. Built in 1504, it’s unique architectural design does not exist elsewhere in Japan, having both a secondary donjon and turret adjoined to its central keep. While photographing the interior of this original samurai castle, we will practice our low lighting techniques, which Blain will explain. A little over an hour drive from Matsumoto, we enter Snow Monkeys territory in Jigokudani Joshinetsu-Kogen National Park, where you will have up-close and personal encounters with wild Japanese macaques as they relax in the hot springs to fight the cool winter temperatures, and some active monkeys are always horsing around. The Japanese Macaque is the most northern-living nonhuman primate; they survive the snowy winter climate by soaking in the warmth of the healing hot springs, also in the region are volcanic steam vents keeping them warm on those cold nights in the trees.

After breakfast at our huge leisure lodgings in Akano and check out, we drive through Hokkaido's eastern alpine route to the Pacific Coast for birding and other wildlife encounters plus winter wonderland landscapes, and you will have a chance to meet locals that is reminiscent to Alaska's yesteryears. Birding: The Steller’s Sea Eagles are huge and beautiful and one of the most fierce birds of prey on our planet natively they feed on pack-ice in the rich fishing waters of Japan's north. We will board our chartered vessel to photograph the Steller’s Sea-eagle in their natural feeding ground on pack ice. The white-tailed eagle which is smaller and native to Japan also feeds on pack ice next to the Steller's sea eagle; tensions are high when fishing and the white-tailed eagle hold there own with the much larger and legendary sea eagles. You will have hundreds of spectacular images of eagles clutching fish in their talons in flight and while feasting, and film some eagles in strife. The area is home to the largest herds of Sika deer on our planet, and we will also photograph the red-tailed fox, white-tailed eagle, black kite, golden eagle, and many other subarctic species. Sunrises and sunsets are extraordinarily beautiful on this stretch of coastline.

Across the length of Chile, stretching 2,650 miles (4,265 kilometers) from north to south, more than 40 national parks have been established in the past century, protecting many endangered species, wild landscapes, and natural wonders. Collected below are images of several of these parks, from Lauca National Park, in the altiplano of Chile’s far north, to the dramatic mountains of Torres del Paine National Park, in the southern Patagonia region.

Winter Wonderland Photography Tour & Workshop
12 photography days, tour #1 – jan 27 (fri) – feb 8 (wed) & tour #2 – feb 15 (wed) – 27 (mon), 2023.
This photography adventure takes us to the best Japanese winter wildlife locations in Japan, at exactly the right time to capture the images of a lifetime. We’ll visit the adorable Snow Monkeys in Nagano for the first three days of each tour. For the latter nine days, we travel to Hokkaido to photograph the majestic Red-Crowned Cranes, Whooper Swans, Seller’s Sea Eagles, White-Tailed Eagles, Ezo Deer, and possibly foxes. There are also some Landscape photography opportunities during the tour, but if you want to photograph the incredible landscape in Hokkaido, also consider our Hokkaido Photography Landscape Adventure .
We stay in four of the six hotels for two or three nights running, meaning you don’t have to uproot every morning. This also gives us the opportunity for structured workshop sessions as time allows.
Details of Your Photography Adventure
Arrival – tour #1 jan 27 (fri), tour #2 feb 15 (wed).
The majority of our guests travel in from overseas, so we include the first night before the tour starts in your package to ensure we’re all in town ready to start bright and early the following morning. For those that arrive in time there is an optional meet-and-greet dinner on the first evening of the tour.
Snow Monkeys (days 1, 2, 3)
On the first morning, we start the tour by heading out to Nagano, north-west of Tokyo, for three days photographing the adorable Japanese Macaque, affectionately known as the Snow Monkeys. These amazing primates are one of the Japanese mainland’s biggest attractions for the winter wildlife photographer. By the evening of day three, we make our way to Tokyo Haneda airport where we spend one night, and then go to Hokkaido early on the morning of day four. This marks the start of nine days in eastern Hokkaido photographing some of the most breathtaking winter wildlife in the world.
Red-Crowned Cranes (days 4, 5)
In Hokkaido, we spend two full days photographing the Red-Crowned Cranes, in a number of locations around Kushiro and Akan. We’ll also visit the Otowa “Sound of Wings” Bridge at dawn on two mornings, with fingers crossed for low temperatures and no wind, in the hope that we’ll get river mist and frosty trees on at least one of the two days.
Whooper Swans (days 6, 7)
We spend two days photographing the Whooper Swans at Kussharo Lake, as they warm themselves in the hot spring waters that flow into the lake. We’ll also aim to capture the swans taking off and landing, working on panning techniques, as well as environmental shots of the swans in their beautiful setting.
Mashuu Lake and Iouzan (Sulphur Mountain) (days 6, 7)
While at the location where we’ll shoot the Whooper Swans, and go to see if we can catch the swans flying over the lake in the beautiful soft morning light. We also have a short shoot at Iouzan (Sulphur Mountain!) for some surreal landscape opportunities.
Sea Eagles (days 8, 9, 10)
We head over to the Shiretoko Peninsula and the port town of Rausu, where we spend three days going out on a boat at dawn to photograph the awesome Seller’s Sea Eagles and White Tailed Eagles on the sea ice. Very occassionally, we are treated to a visit by a pod of Orcas.
Notsuke Peninsula & Shinto Shrine Visit (days 8, 9, 10)
While we are staying in Rausu for the Sea Eagles, we’ll make time at least once to drive out to the Notsuke Peninsula to photograph the Ezo Deer and Hokkaido Fox that we often find there. We also pay an optional visit to the local Shinto Shrine in Rausu, where we receive a traditional Shinto blessing, and have the chance to take photos and ask questions about the shrine and the Shinto religion.
Shiretoko National Park (days 11, 12)
Then on the way around to the Utoro side of the Shiretoko Peninsula, we will make stops along the way to photograph the landscape and birch tree groves. Just outside of Utoro we’ll make a stop at the Oshinkoshin Falls, and possibly make our way into the Shiretoko National Park for a walk out through the woods in the hope of spotting some Ezo Deer or perhaps even a woodpecker.
Return to Tokyo – Tour #1 Feb 8 (Wed), Tour #2 Feb 27 (Mon)
After a steady short morning shoot on Day 12, we head over to Memanbetsu airport and go back to Tokyo at in the afternoon, usually by around 5pm.
Workshop Sessions
Depending on weather and the group’s energy levels, at a number of locations, we set time aside for a workshop session and group discussions for those interested in participating.
NOTE: You will receive a detailed itinerary and information to help you prepare for your tour shortly after making your reservation.
Your Host – Martin Bailey
Your host and tour leader, Martin Bailey, is British born though now a Japanese citizen, having lived in Japan for over twenty-eight years. A professional wildlife and nature photographer, Martin is also fluent in Japanese both written and spoken, and his knowledge of the locations we visit and subjects we photograph is unrivaled, making us the perfect choice for your Japanese photography adventure.
Martin has been visiting Hokkaido every year since 2003, and the 2023 tours take us into our seventeenth year of amazing workshops. We continuously refine the Itinerary and locations visited based on previous experience and feedback. These tours just get better and better.
Additional Information
Accommodation & meals.
We stay in a mix of traditional Japanese hotels and western-style hotels, with great food, sometimes buffet style, though often meals prepared specifically for our group. We’ll note if you have any food preferences (allergies, vegetarian etc.) and make changes as possible to suit your needs. Many of the hotels have relaxing hot springs baths to relax after a day out shooting.
For the entire tour, we use a large bus with a professional driver that stays with us the entire time. The bus provides ample luggage space and every participant has a double seat, which means you can put your camera bag right next to you on the seat, for easy access to your gear when a photo opportunity arises. On occasion, we shoot from the bus windows, and the bus size provides everyone with an open window on either side as well.
Full-Time Tour Conductor
To ensure that all of the tour logistics run like clockwork we travel with a full-time conductor on hand throughout the tour. This means we never have to wait for our keys at hotels, and all meals are ready for us when we arrive. We are also able to negotiate much better meals for western tastes that most Japan tours are able to provide. The tour conductor works closely with Martin which frees him to concentrate on working with the group and gives you more time to concentrate on your photography and enjoying your Japan experience.
Who is this Workshop for?
- Anyone with a love for wildlife, nature and landscape photography, and that can handle a bit of cold weather
- Anyone that wants to improve their photography while shooting the photographs of a lifetime
- In general, tuition assumes at least a basic understanding of photography and your equipment, but photographers of all levels are very welcome, from complete beginner to professional photographers
- You’ll need an SLR camera or recent mirrorless camera, and lenses up around 400mm (or 35mm equivalent) though ideally, you’ll have two camera bodies, so that you don’t have to change lenses during fast-paced shooting, like when photographing birds in flight. You’ll receive advice on all gear necessary after signing up and Martin is always there to answer any other questions you might have
What is included in the Package?
- Accommodation on Sunday night before we kick off the tour
- All accommodation and meals during your tour
- Flights from Tokyo Haneda airport to Hokkaido and back
- A chartered bus with driver (and lots of luggage space) to transport us safely and comfortably around Japan for the entire trip
- A representative from our Tour Operator partner travels with us throughout to ensure all the logistics run smoothly, which also frees up Martin to give full attention to the group
- Admission fees to planned facilities and excursions, such as the crane center and chartered boat to photograph the Eagles
What is NOT included in the Package?
- Your flight or travel costs to the meeting points in Tokyo or back home after the tours
- Hotels while traveling prior to or following the tour/workshops (although we can help with booking your Tokyo hotels for one or two nights before and/or after the tour as necessary)
- Evening meal on Sunday evening before the tour starts
- Beverages or additional items ordered during meals
- The cost of the optional Shinto blessing in Rausu
A Word on Insurance
Our Tour Operator carries standard insurance necessary by Japanese law but you are strongly advised to arrange the following insurance:
- Travel Insurance — If you fall sick or have an accident during the course of the trip, you will miss part of your tour, and possibly incur hospital fees and other expenses that can mount up. We strongly advise you to take out travel insurance for yourself for the entire length of the trip in advance of departure
- Cancellation Insurance — This is often included in your Travel Insurance, but if for any reason you have to cancel your tour, cancellation insurance can help you recuperate your costs
- Note that travel and cancellation insurance usually has to be bought within 10 days of booking the tour or less. Please check on this as soon as you book.
- Camera Equipment Insurance — We also suggest that you insure your photography equipment and belongings if not included in your home or travel insurance. If you already have your gear insured, double check that you are covered for international travel too, if you are visiting Japan from another country
Influenza Vaccinations
You do not need any special vaccinations for Japan, but you are strongly advised to ensure that you’ve had an influenza shot for that season by no later than two weeks prior to coming to Japan. These tours coincide with the flu season here in Japan, and we would not like you to lose valuable photography days in bed or risk infecting the rest of the group if we can help it. Vaccinations are not 100% though. It’s good practice to wash your hands and gargle with water when you get to your hotel, especially after traveling on public transport.
Guidebook PDF
After you sign up, you will receive a PDF document to help you with your preparations. This will contain details on recommended camera gear, cold weather clothing, and advice on Japanese etiquette to help make your stay in Japan as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. There is also a detailed itinerary, maps and hotel phone numbers etc. to leave with your loved ones while you’re away.

Participant Testimonials
An exceptional photo journey.
MBP Japan Wildlife Tour was truly an exceptional experience. From the country & culture to the camaraderie of the cohort, this trip was the best. Martin provided the most organized & varied photo opportunities – Not to be missed!
This tour truly delivers a Hokkaido Winter Wonderland Workshop!
From the moment we all met at Haneda Airport, the trip was ‘flawless”. The organization and execution of the entire trip was meticulous and well thought out, the hotel accommodation plush, and the local cuisine exquisite.
Martin’s eloquent skill in the Japanese language, and having excellent mastery of the local environment meant he was able to deliver the very best of Hokkaido for both wildlife and landscape photo opportunities.
I had always struggled with the intricacy of exposure and I never shot in full manual mode, Martin’s insight on these topics is ingenious, suffice to say, after the trip, I now only ever shoot in full manual mode. Martin’s tutoring meant I came away from the Hokkaido tour with many 1st class photos of Japanese Red-Crowned Cranes, Eagles, Ezo Deer and a sound understanding of photography. This tour truly delivers a Hokkaido Winter Wonderland Workshop
We improved our ability to capture birds in flight!
We particularly wanted to improve our ability to capture birds in flight during this trip, and we have certainly achieved that. Using back button focusing helped us to improve, as did a clearer understanding of our cameras’ auto focus features. Thank you Martin. Photographing the eagles taking fish from the water was an experience we will never forget, and just one of many highlights.
Martin’s passion and enthusiasm for running the trip was clear!
Many thanks for organising and running such a good trip – I have now been on many wildlife photographic trips, and this rates as one of the very best. Martin’s passion for the subject and clear enthusiasm for running the trip was clear to everyone. And Martin’s technical knowledge of photography is second to none. Many, many thanks.
Everything ran so smoothly even when things weren’t going to plan!
Your organisation and contact before the tour was unlike any other and very impressive, and continued throughout the tour. Everything ran so smoothly (even when things weren’t going to plan!) The variety in wildlife and landscape was also brilliant and having the chance to go back to the same places over a couple of days and in different conditions really gave me the chance to improve on my skills. Your workshops were also really helpful and I have definitely noticed an improvement in my images over the two weeks – some of the images I’ve taken are unlike anything I thought I was capable of before the trip!
Martin organizes and runs a great tour!
Martin organizes and runs a great tour. I attended the 2016 Winter Wildlife Tour. I love going on tours that offer the chance to photograph a variety of subjects. This tour provided non-stop photo opportunities. The highlight for me was watching and photographing the White-Tailed and Steller Sea Eagles. Martin also exposes his guests to Japanese culture which was a great experience.
Exceeded my expectations on all levels!
The Snow Monkeys & Hokkaido Tour and Workshop exceeded my expectations on all levels. The wildlife was amazing, the Japanese winter wonderland was beautiful and on top of that we got a glimpse into japanese culture. The whole tour was perfectly organized by Martin and his wonderful crew which relieved us from all the tedious bits and pieces that come along with such a journey. The icing on the cake is Martin’s way to share knowledge and to give lessons on how to photograph in snow and the existing weather conditions. The tour is quite demanding and certainly no vacation but it is worth every effort.
Your commitment to helping your clients is without equal!
Truly, Martin, I have been participating in workshops for many years with some of the world’s best, but your commitment to helping your clients realize their full potential as artists — in preparation, image capture, and post-capture interpretation — is without equal.
Martin is an excellent teacher. Very patient, and with a wonderful sense of humour!
Martin is an excellent teacher. Very patient, and with a wonderful sense of humour. He knows Japan, particularly Hokkaido, because he’s lived here for over 26 years, and has chosen excellent locations, none of which disappointed – no small feat considering how reliant on weather we were. He’s well-organized and if anything didn’t go according to plan I certainly didn’t notice a glitch in the matrix. But for a guy who’s so easy-going he can really march his troops, and we were up at some lunatic hours, one morning my alarm went as early as 4:00am. Thank God you can get coffee in the vending machines. If you’re looking for a relaxing holiday, this isn’t it, though the food, sake, and abundant hot springs took the sting out of the early mornings and long hours.
Very professionally planned, organized and executed!
I was so impressed with the 2014 Hokkaido winter wildlife tour that I also joined the 2015 Hokkaido Winter Landscape tour. Both tours were truly outstanding. On the wildlife tour, the quantity of cranes, eagles, snow monkeys, etc., far exceeded expectations. The weather presented us with some challenges but plans were quickly adjusted to provide an extremely productive and rewarding photo tour. The tour/workshop was very professionally planned, organized and executed.
Similarly, during the Landscape tour, all efforts were made to provide us with interesting locations that would be appropriate for the existing lighting and snow conditions. Such planning and execution would not be possible without Martin’s in depth experience in Japan and particularly in Hokkaido. As MB photography podcast listeners would agree, Martin is extremely knowledgeable on the technical and artistic aspects of photography and he is always eager to educate and provide assistance to all participants, regardless of skill levels. It should also be mentioned that the Japan tour operator support, transportation, lodging, meals, onsen, etc., all contributed to a unique, enjoyable, Hokkaido photographic experience —Highly recommended!
Martin maximises photographic opportunities for participants
I have taken photography workshops in Australia, France, USA, the Falkland Islands, the Subantarctic and Japan and Martin Bailey is the best tour leader I have encountered. The organisation of his tour was second to none and Martin makes sure that he maximises the photographic opportunities available to his tour participants.
Not only did we visit the best photographic locations, I also learned new camera and post-processing techniques resulting in images which have won in photography competitions and been included in the Photographic Society of America’s PID Interclub Best of the Best for 2016. I would highly recommend Martin as a tour leader.
You made us feel more like family than clients
Liz and I wanted to once again say thanks for a terrific tour with the snow monkeys and the wildlife of Hokkaido. We enjoyed all aspects of our time with our special group (the very early mornings somewhat less) and especially your instruction and mentoring all along the way. The tour conductor’s constant oversight ensured an effortless trip for us and made us feel more like family than clients. As a business owner, I know how much work and effort goes into setting up the logistics for a trip such as this, as well as the effort required to make the field work come together seamlessly. I commend you for your tireless efforts throughout our journey in Japan.
Martin’s organization was meticulous and his Japanese language skills were key!
I highly recommend Martin Bailey’s Hokkaido tour, in particular, because Martin is not only a responsible, knowledgeable, forthcoming and nice guy, but also a superb photographer himself, who knows all the right places.
Martin’s organization was meticulous and his Japanese language skills were key, from getting us from Tokyo to Hokkaido (and back) as well as to the different photo shoots and hotels (via bus), everything went smoothly and without a hitch. The hotels were very nice and the food plentiful and good to excellent.
Martin answers questions regarding choice and use of equipment, photography in general, and provides advice on the challenges of photographing the different locations etc. At the moment I can’t think of anything else – besides the 2010 tour and the challenge of selecting my favorites from 2009. 🙂
The teacher we know from the podcasts is even better in person!
My time at your snow monkey workshop in Jigokudani was so much fun! Thank you for all you taught me – exposure, composition, color management, Lightroom processing, workflow and more. The teacher we know from the podcasts is even better in person!
You developed a terrific itinerary!
I want to thank you for a wonderful trip to Japan. You developed a terrific itinerary that included traditional lodging and food, fantastic opportunities to take pictures of snow monkeys, Japanese Red-crowned cranes, Sea Eagles and much more. I would also like to commend you on what I consider your natural ability to teach. I learned so much on this trip.
Martin was always available to answer photographic and cultural questions
I have been on many photographic tours and workshops in recent years and would rank MBP Snow Monkeys and Hokkaido Tour and Workshop as one of the very best. The trip organization was excellent with very good pre-trip information and help throughout the trip. Martin knows exactly where to be and when to be there to get the best shots. He was always available to answer photographic as well as cultural questions.
I think photographers of all levels would benefit from this tour/workshop. I particularly enjoyed the introduction to Japanese culture and cuisine, a wonderful bonus to an exceptional photographic experience. In comparing trips to photograph Japanese wildlife in winter I also found the Martin Bailey trip to be an excellent value for what was provided.
This tour ranks among our very best!
Martin Bailey’s Winter Wonderland Photography Tour was an outstanding experience. We have participated in a significant number of photo tours and this one ranks among our very best. We returned with an amazing number and variety of quality images. Martin worked very hard to put us in the right place at the right time to get everything possible from the trip. An added dimension was the quality of the instruction and his concern with everyone getting the benefit of his experience with suggestions for camera settings and compositions. The food, accommodations and cultural experiences exceeded what we expected.
I’ll go anywhere with you Martin!
The helpful tour operator, Yukiko, is definitely the best guide one can have on this planet “fullstop”. I am very happy to meet Martin in person, who gave me back my motivation about photography, even with being on the field again. Taking great shots of White-tailed eagles , Steller’s Sea Eagels and Blakiston’s Fish owl is good enough for making this trip a very successful one, however all the workshops and Martin’s on the field instructions about photography in general, made this trip an unbeatable one , I’ll go anywhere with you Martin. After 8 years of photographing wildlife, I just started to shoot “manual” and started to get wonderful results thanks to Martin’s excellent lectures and tips. CU again Martin!
A memorable and rewarding experience!
I participated in the MBP Tour and Workshop in Nagano and Hokkaido in Feb 2011. I had little Wildlife photography experience prior to the Tour. However, my understanding and appreciation of this facet has grown considerably because of my participation. The itinerary, the organisation, the photography mentoring, the wildlife, the scenery, the accommodation, the food, the cameraderie within the group, all added to the fun of involvement. Martin’s friendliness, approachability, knowledge of photography and Japan and the language, ensured a memorable and rewarding experience, that I would recommend to anyone interested.
Great Tour from the first until the last moment!
Great Tour from the first until the last moment. A great group with a high understanding of photography, and great organization. Martin gave us great teaching in Manual Mode, Lightroom and Color Management etc. Even the experienced Photographer can learn something.
The hotels were very good and it was great experiencing a bit of Japanese culture!
Excellent tour which I would recommend for anyone interested in improving their photographic skills and the opportunity to see some wonderful wildlife. A real privilege. The flexibility of the tour enabled us to see cranes performing beautiful dancing whilst it was snowing which I shall never forget. Being at the various locations for a few days was great as not only did it give the opportunity to improve on taking photos but gave a small appreciation and understanding of the animal’s behaviour and hence look out for more specific shots to take. The tour was well organised, ran smoothly to Martin and the Tour Operator’s credit. The hotels were very good and it was great experiencing a bit of Japanese culture and food again. Thanks for a memorable tour.
A delightfully rich, rewarding and enjoyable experience!
Martin’s Hokkaido Tour and Workshop was a delightfully rich, rewarding and enjoyable experience both photographically and culturally. Martin’s fluency in Japanese, in-depth knowledge of the locations, friendly nature and extensive photographic knowledge and skills (which he willingly shared) make him a great guide, teacher and companion. Thanks to Martin’s expert assistance and advice together with spectacular locations and vantage points, I came home with some of the best photos I’ve ever taken. And I’m now shooting confidently in manual – which, I discovered, is important with wildlife than can move rapidly!
Highly recommended!!!
Attending MBP Workshop 2011 was a unique experience and great introduction to Japanese culture and wildlife. The workshop was well organised and gives the photographer great freedom. Highly recommended!!!
The tour exceeded all expectations!
The Snow Monkey and Hokkaido Photography Tour exceeded all expectations. Martin is very generous with his photographic knowledge and technical assistance – but never obtrusive. I was already shooting in manual mode, but returned home with far greater camera skills and the ability to manually control the shots that I wanted. For the first time I had images of a high enough quality to enter in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The tour was also excellent culturally with many memorable traditional Japanese meals….and baths!
Martin’s passion for photography is infectious!
Martin’s passion for photography is infectious. Whether you’re standing in the dark, at minus 15 degrees, wearing nearly every item of clothing you brought, waiting for a sunrise, or sitting on the floor in traditional Japanese attire over dinner (with beer), you are inspired by his enthusiasm, knowledge, and desire to help you master your craft. This trip was a magical blend of opportunity and expertise. If you’re looking for a unique insight into the photographic opportunities of Japan wildlife and landscape, this is the perfect trip! Martin’s trips will book quickly as word spreads – don’t miss out.
Unbelievable photographic opportunities, outstanding food and superb company!
Unbelievable photographic opportunities, outstanding food and superb company made for a truly memorable experience. I shot some of my best images ever! Thank you Martin!
A cornucopia of great photography locations, people, learning and fellowship!
The Martin Bailey Hokkaido experience is a cornucopia of great photography locations, people, learning, and fellowship. It was as much a cultural experience as it was a photographic one. Martin’s command of the language and familiarity with the locations ensured a hassle-free trip. It was an amazing experience to be surrounded by encouraging colleagues in a non-competitive environment with unrestricted access to such a competent and approachable teacher.
2011 Update: This was my third time on the tour and definitely not my last. That should speak bundles.
