Let the city guide you. You don't have to put much effort into finding what to do or where to go in a city like Nagoya. Kick off your trip from Nagoya Castle and end it walking the Nakasendo Kiso Valley.
"Nagoya meishi" is the way Nagoyans define their cuisine. The range of dishes includes miso-flavoured pork cutlets, fresh local seafood and, naturally, the misonikomi udon: thick wheat noodles boiled in miso broth with leeks, chicken, and other ingredients. Spoil yourself with one of the best unagi dishes in the entire country.
When visiting Nagoya, you will find plenty of cafes ranging from small local places to big coffee shop chains offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you are a cake lover, you will not have problems finding a cafe serving delicious cakes: try Café Gentiane JR Nagoya Station, they serve the cutest animal-shaped desserts in the city.
Bars & Nightlife
The best nightclubs dot the Sakae and Nishiki precincts, where bars and clubs regularly host world-famous DJs and musicians. Here, you can choose to go to a local bar, the so-called "izakaya", and spend your time with the locals or opt for a more international bar if you don't feel too confident with your Japanese skills just yet.
As its size and status suggest, there are plenty of shopping opportunities in Nagoya, particularly in the Sakae district. Located next to Nagoya Station you'll find the Meitetsu department store for high fashion boutiques, designer and accessory outlets. Other malls, which also double up as places for entertainment, include Central Park, located beneath the TV towers, and Osu Shopping Arcade on Niomon Street. On the mornings of the 18th and 28th of each month, close by Osu Kannon station, the fun-to-browse-through Osu Flea Market takes place with its mishmash of genuine antiques.

Nagoya (名古屋) is the capital and largest city of Aichi prefecture, in the Chubu region of Honshu, Japan. It is Japan's third-largest incorporated city, the fourth most populous urban area and one of the country’s leading industrial cities. It is also one of the nation's major economic centers. Nagoya now ranks as one of the nation's economic powerhouses, and is home to the head offices of Toyota Motor Corporation, Brother Industries, Daido Steel, Makita, Denso Corporation, INAX, Suzuki Motor, Honda Motor, Noritake, NGK Insulators, Olympus Optical, Yamaha and many others. Unlike other parts of Japan, which borrowed heavily for elaborate and expensive public works projects in the bubble years of the 1980's, Nagoya held to a pay-as-you-go philosophy, and has not been as adversely affected by the post-bubble recession as other major centres.

With over two million inhabitants, Nagoya () is Japan's fourth most populated city after Tokyo , Yokohama and Osaka . It is the capital of Aichi Prefecture and the principal city of the Nobi plain, one of Honshu's three large plains and metropolitan and industrial centers.
Nagoya developed as the castle town of the Owari, one of the three branches of the ruling Tokugawa family during the Edo Period . Much of the city, including most of its historic buildings, were destroyed in the air raids of 1945. The Toyota Motor Corporation maintains its headquarters just outside of Nagoya.

One Day in Nagoya
A history and culinary adventure in 24 hours
Nagoya is often overlooked by many first time visitors. Despite the fact that it's a capital city of a prefecture in central Honshu island, Aichi, and that it's the 4th most populated city in Japan, with a location not so far from Kyoto and Osaka, Nagoya is often forgotten by visitors aiming to visit those two of Japan's biggest cities.
In fact, Nagoya has a long and rich historical and cultural values—leaving numerous important places worth a visit when you're in town. Good news is, all those places can be explored in just one day.
Nagoya Castle
Start the day at the city's main attraction: the castle. The historical complex consists of several buildings and parks, so it's just natural to spend a half day here. Nagoya Castle was built during Edo Period as the residence of one of the branch family of the ruling clan, Tokugawa. It's then no wonder that the castle became one of the biggest in Japan, that made the town surrounding it, the city of Nagoya, became the 4th largest in the country.
The castle keep is currently under renovation and is scheduled to reopen in 2022, but visitors can still enjoy the beauty of the attraction as well as its history throughout the moats that surround the inner castle area, as well as the extensive parks. Also in these green spaces, visitors can spot amazing ninja performances where the actors can be asked to take photographs together after the show.

Honmaru Goten
The main keep may be closed (you can still take photos in front of it, though), but visitors' thirst of history will still be catered by the castle's palace, Honmaru Goten. The building, which used to be the residence of shoguns, was just renovated—transforming itself to be Nagoya Castle's main attraction. Inside this wooden architecture constructed using traditional technique, visitors can dig deeper on the life of imperial family members and their royal guests, along with intricate paintings and relics scattered around the corridors and Japanese tatami rooms with paper sliding doors.
The New Honmaru Goten Palace
Tracing down every corner of the newest face of Japan's most extravagant palace, where imperial palace members resided in Nagoya...
Osu Kannon Temple
After done feeding the history geek inside of you, it's time to see more of the city's religious side. One of the most popular attraction would be the blazing red Osu Temple . This Buddhist temple which was built during Kamakura Period was actually located in nearby Gifu Prefecture, and replaced to its current site due to constant attack of flood. The main object of the temple is a wooden Kannon statue carved by Kobo Daishi, an influential Japanese Buddhist monk. Osu Temple's front yard is locals' favorite spot to sit around while enjoying the architecture of the building and interacting with a flock of birds.
Osu Shopping Arcade
Immediately next to the temple, lies a very busy network of shopping arcades . You can find fashion stores, shoes stores, accessories stores, toy shops, anime stores and everything related to J-Pop, restaurants, cafes, street food stands, you name it! This would be the perfect place for you to have lunch today, or maybe just get some snacks (my recommendation would be matcha ice cream) to go while walking around and shopping.
Later on, just before it gets dark, head to the city's port area. Located on the south side of the city, Nagoyako is one of Japan's largest port area that consists of a theme park, an aquarium, a museum, shopping centers, and restaurants. This is an open space directly facing the water, a place so perfect for people who have had enough of a big city's buzz and its intimidating buildings. I'd really recommend you to stay until the sun sets, which can be enjoyed from the park area just south of the aquarium. The natural beauty will be complemented by the buildings around the area that will all be illuminated by colorful neon lights just after the last sunlight disappears.
Dusk at Nagoya Port
A short yet amazing trip to Nagoya-ko, Nagoya's port area which is popular with locals, with a variety of visitors and activities..
Nagoya Station
Whether you'll be heading to the next city or going back to your hotels, you might end up your day at Nagoya Station . It's the heart of the city, with lots of stores and restaurants crowding both the inside and the outside. There are also lots of food options to the west and the east of the station, making it a perfect place for you to wrap up the day with some local specialties!
If you ask me to pick one out of so many signature dishes in Nagoya, I'd undoubtedly choose Tebasaki for my short one day visit. This chicken wings dish is unlike any other, as it is deep fried and served with a very rich spices sensation! Tebasaki is best enjoyed with local beer or sake.
Tebasaki - the spices still linger on me even until now...
Getting there
Nagoya is less than 2 hours from Tokyo or Osaka by bullet train, making it a good choice for visitors on the Japan Rail Pass.

Minnesota travel agent under fire again for canceled trips, customers stranded
Mn travel agent leaves many stranded in costa rica.
A Minnesota travel agent left about 71 travelers stranded with no accommodations in Costa Rica. In March, the same travel agent left some Minnesotans stranded in Florida after cruise booking issues. FOX 9's Karen Scullin has the latest.
(FOX 9) - The stories about Minnesota travel agent Monica Faulkner just keep piling up.
First, a group of cruise passengers say they were left stranded at the dock in March after she apparently didn’t book the trip for them, even though they had paid.
Now, there is chaos in Costa Rica after her travel group lands in the country with no place to stay, and an Aruba group of travelers just found out their Mother’s Day trip was suddenly canceled.
This past Saturday, Minnesota travel agent Monica Faulkner took a group of about 71 travelers to Costa Rica.
Even though the group paid in full, the travel agent apparently hadn’t put their money down on accommodations. At some point, Faulkner had called a liaison in Costa Rica at the last minute to find property owners who would take her group to various condos, AirBnB’s and other places.
A Costa Rica property owner told FOX 9 the whole thing was so odd, but she figured the hotel must have been overbooked, so she was happy to help. But she noticed Faulkner was kind of avoiding the group she brought with her.
"She [Faulkner] was like ‘don’t say anything to these people," Costa Rica property owner Jennfier Little said.
Then Faulkner signed a lease with Little and handed over her passport as collateral with a promise to pay for two nights in two days, which would be on Monday. They set up a meeting spot, but Faulkner didn’t show up.
"We heard she might have been abducted, then we heard she was at the hospital, then we heard all this stuff," Little said.
Little even went to the luxury condo she had booked for her and her family and knocked on the door. Faulkner wasn’t there, and she had the door slammed in her face, she said.
On Wednesday, the property owners were told to meet Faulkner again for payment when Little said Faulkner demanded her passport back. Little and her husband refused, but Faulkner grabbed it anyway.
Little recorded video of Monica on the phone, supposedly trying to send her the money owed.
"PayPal, Zelle, Venmo, none of that was going through," Little said. "Then other people she owes money, $3,051 – they sent her an invoice on PayPal, and that’s when she started acting like she was going to pass out."
Meanwhile, the travelers who were put into the last minute accommodation were kicked out because Faulkner had not paid the property owners. Some of them flew home, while others paid extra to stay.
But it wasn’t just Costa Rica. FOX 9 was told by other travelers set to vacation in Aruba that their trip was suddenly canceled two weeks before they were set to leave.
After receiving no confirmation or room numbers from Faulkner, the travelers called the hotel they had reservations at to find out more, and found out they were never booked. The travelers allegedly paid Faulkner at least $2,500 each for a room.
"I gave him [the hotel] the name of everybody in my party, and they said no one has a room under their name. I’m like that’s crazy because we gave this lady a total of $5,600," said Antionette Steele.
On Sunday, Faulkner called some of the Aruba traveling party saying the trip was canceled, while others just stopped getting communications all together. Another woman who was set to go on the Aruba trip, Renee Pepper, said Faulkner’s number was going straight to voicemail and she wasn’t responding to Facebook messages.
Little received all but $125 returned, she believes because she had her sign a lease.
Others in Costa Rica were more trusting and are currently out well over $10,000. They tried to file court papers to stop Faulkner from leaving the country, but she reportedly left on Thursday.
No one on the Aruba trip has yet to receive any money back.

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines
The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.
By Christine Chung
The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.
“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.
The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.
Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.
Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.
Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.
Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.
There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.
Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.
Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.
When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.
Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.
The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.
Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.
The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.
Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.
Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.
The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.
For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.
