Ahoy! 'Monsters of Rock' cruise hits the high seas

In Larry Morand's former life, he was a tour manager for some of the world's biggest hard rock bands like Poison and Ratt. Today, he's not just taking the band on tour—he's hitting the open seas and bringing the fans.

And unlike in previous years, this time everyone gets a backstage pass.

Morand is producer of the five-day "Monsters of Rock" Cruise , an ocean excursion that's scheduled to leave Miami for the Bahamas this weekend. It promises plenty of "fun, sun and rock star debauchery."

"The people on the cruise know how to handle their partying," he said in a CNBC in an interview. But this is still rock 'n' roll, and therefore it's still a nonstop party, he adds.

Working in the music industry since college, Morand has seen it all. He started in the early 1980s as an intern for the late Ronnie James Dio, who in his heyday fronted for groups like Black Sabbath and Rainbow. Dio, a heavy metal icon, and manager-wife Wendy became mentors to Morand.

From a castle to the high seas

Now 51 with a family at home, he said he's been "looking for an out" from the grueling work and long stretches away from home as a rock tour manager. He calls that "a younger man's game."

Four years ago, Morand hooked up with cruise industry veteran Mike London, and the Monsters of Rock Cruise was born. The tour is based on the old Monsters of Rock annual festivals, which once regaled rock listeners at England's Castle Donington .

As it turns out, touring the ocean is a lot more work than driving cross-country in a tour bus. Yet this is just a 5 day tour, and for Morand and the bands on board, the beautiful backdrop of Miami and the Bahamas makes it seem easier.

This year's lineup includes more than 30 classic hard rock artists like Night Ranger, Cinderella, Queensryche, Lita Ford, Tesla, and Extreme.

Although these rockers can't fill large arenas like they used to, they can still play to a sold-out ship. The tour is using one of the largest cruise ships in the world, the MSC Divina , and more than 3,400 rock fans paid around $1,000 for the privilege of rocking out to classic acts.

On board, the fans get a chance to really connect with their favorite rockers, something they might not get a chance to do at a traditional music festival.

"There's a great vibe on the ship," Morand said. "The bands bring their families, and the fans have become friends off the ship."

"Theme cruises are a great idea," said Monty Mathisen, managing editor of Cruise Industry News, who expects such geatways will help make the cruise industry even more popular. In 2015, he's projecting 23 million people will go cruises of various sorts.

Morand is moving full steam ahead, trying to get a piece that action by creating niche experiences for willing fans. He already produces a progressive rock cruise, a Moody Blues cruise and even a craft-beer-lovers cruise. Next year he plans to create some 'Hysteria on the High Seas' when he sets sail with one of the biggest selling rock bands of all time, Def Leppard.

"Sky's the limit", Morand said of this new chapter of his career.

Monsters Of Rock Cruise Announces Biggest Lineup Ever

Monsters Of Rock Cruise – the four-day, four-night voyage out of Miami this February 22-26, aboard the NCL Pearl – has announced its biggest line-up ever in its five year history. This year’s cruise, appropriately titled Shredders From The Deep, will feature 40+ bands including headliners Tesla, Steve Vai, Extreme, Sebastian Bach, Queensryche, Helloween and Y&T, plus guitar fantasy camps, pre-cruise events and more.

This year’s cruise itinerary includes pre-parties on February 20 and 21 (complimentary to all cruisers with entertainment/location TBA), visiting the private island of Great Stirrup Cay and the cosmopolitan resort meccas of Nassau and Paradise Island in the Bahamas, plus a full day of Metal mayhem at sea. The Monsters Of Rock Cruise: Shredders From The Deep will transport fans back to the era when Metal wasn’t just a music genre, it was a way of life. The final artist line-up for the 2016 Shredders From The Deep cruise include headliners Tesla, Steve Vai, Extreme, Sebastian Bach, Queensryche, Helloween and Y&T. Joining the headliners is an epic array of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal artists featuring: Michael Monroe, Gotthard, Doro, Lynch Mob, Vixen, Dangerous Toys, Kingdom Come, Armored Saint, Saigon Kick, XYZ, Killer Dwarfs, Metal Church, Hardcore Superstar, Akira Takasaki of Loudness, Jeff Scott Soto, Gus G of Ozzy Osbourne, Uli Jon Roth of Scorpions, Joel Hoekstra of Whitesnake, Helix, Michael Angelo Batio, Vinnie Moore, Madam X, Tyketto, Anvil, Hellion, Dio Disciples, Lilian Axe, Soto, D-A-D, Heavy Mellow, Brandon Gibbs, Paradise Kitty and The Kix.

New this year to the cruise are Guitar Fantasy Camp at Sea Shredder Clinics, available to all passengers aboard the cruise for free as part of the cabin fee. Clinics will be given by Steve Vai, Vinnie Moore (UFO), George Lynch (Dokken and Lynch Mob), Gus G (Ozzy Osbourne), Michael Angelo Battio and Akira Takasaki (Loudness), with more instructors to be announced. Instructions to reserve these complimentary clinics will be given to cruisers a few weeks before the cruise.

According to cruise spokesman, Larry Morand, “The clinics are designed to give our passengers the opportunity to hone their guitar skills in an up close and personal experience with some of rock’s greatest shredders. Fans don’t just watch the artist perform, they make music with the artists.” In addition to all instruments being provided, artists in each clinic will be giving away an autographed guitar to one lucky fan in attendance.

In addition to the performances and clinics, the cruise will feature over-the-top special events only experienced on this voyage, including: Artist Meet & Greets, Monsters Rock & Roll Formal, Monster Gong Show Karaoke, Rock Star Dating, and Cooking with Rock Stars, and a “So You Think You Can Shred” Guitar Competition, with more events to be announced. As an added bonus, TV personalities and cruise hosts Eddie Trunk and Don Jamieson from VH1’s That Metal Show will moderate the intimate on board artist Q&A’s. Rounding out the spectacular celebrity line-up are radio personalities Luc Carl from XM’s Hair Nation, along with San Francisco bay area radio host Nikki Blakk.

2014 Monsters of Rock Cruise Announces Lineup

Ready to return to the high seas with your favorite rock bands of yesteryear? The 2014 Monsters of Rock Cruise has just announced the lineup.

The Cruise's third-annual outing, scheduled from March 29 through April 2 next year, will play host to a long list of hard-rock and heavy-metal stalwarts from the '80s and '90s, including a bunch of returning acts like Tesla, Y&T, Great White , Firehouse, Eric Martin of Mr. Big and drummer Carl Palmer, best known for his stints in Asia and Emerson, Lake & Palmer .

But that's just a fraction of the confirmed roster, which you can see here ; passengers will also be treated to performances from the surviving original members of Ratt , the original lineup of Winger (playing the band's debut record in honor of its 25th anniversary), Cinderella , Slaughter and former Motley Crue singer John Corabi, plus many more.

The price of a cabin on the Cruise has yet to be announced, but organizers have also revealed that the ship's journey -- which begins in Fort Lauderdale, Fla,. and will make room for a stop in Nassau -- will also include a detour into "a special secret location that's been christened Monster Island." Ahoy, rockers!

Monsters of Rock Cruise – February 2012

Along with DC4, the legendary Hollywood hellraisers, Odin, (featuring Jeff and Shawn Duncan from DC4) have been added to the bill, capping off a stellar year of return performances for the band, which formed in 1983. On both bands being asked to take part in the festivities, drummer Shawn Duncan says, “It’s an honour for DC4 to be recognized and included on this bill as we support our new album, ‘Electric Ministry.’ And, as for Odin, does this mean we’ve finally ‘made it?,'” he asks. “I mean, it’s not that million dollar cheque I was counting on but this sure ain’t bad, either!”

Both bands join Cinderella, Tesla, Kix, Keel, Stryper, Lynch Mob, UFO, Y&T, Firehouse, Black N’ Blue, Faster Pussycat, Bang Tango, XYZ, Mr. Big’s Eric Martin, John Corabi of The Scream and Motley Crue, Helix, Rhino Bucket and Night Ranger on the three day trip.

It all began one special day in August 1980 at Castle Donington, Leicestershire, England…Seven Metal Bands and thousands of rabid fans converged on the soggy turf of Donington Park and became part of rock history as a legendary event was born…the  Monsters of Rock !

Fast forward to February 2012…Now you can become part of music history , as the tradition of the Monsters of Rock is reborn, this time in the Bahamas aboard a luxury cruise ship.
