MOUNT PULAG HIKING GUIDE

Gears+food+accommodation.

It is essential to have the right gears and clothes when you want to climb Mt. Pulag. Temperature can go close to the freezing point and it rains almost everyday in the mountain. Without proper equipment, the cold combined with the rain could leave you with hypothermia. We will provide a list of things to bring when you book. Meals For those who don't want to bring their cooking equipments they can cook their own meal at the homestay. Tent or home-stay? It is your call but we can arrange both. If you plan to go during the Amihan months choose the homestay.

BEFORE YOU GO

❶ Do we need a medical certificate? Yes. Without this medical certificate the National Park won't let you enter the site. You can either secure it from your doctor or get it on site from the local clinic. ❷ Is it easy or difficult? This trek is a moderate one. On Tripinas scale we would put it at 2.5/5. The trail is easy and never very steep but the weather can be really cold and wet. If you have the right gears/clothes it will be manageable. ❸ Can we camp close to the summit? There is a camp, called "camp 2" but it is has a tight carrying capacity and it often closed without prior notice. ❹ Do we need to reserve? Yes, the national park does not allow visitors without a reservation. TRIPinas will take care of this if you book with us. ❺ Is it true that a foreigner will have to pay more? Unfortunately yes, the national park charges an additional fee for non-Filipino (unless they have an ACR card). This extra fee won't get you any additional service. ❻ Which day of the week should I plan to go? All weekdays are fine, even a tour on a Friday to Saturday and a tour on a Sunday to Monday is enjoyable. But please avoid scheduling your tour on a Saturday to Sunday: on top of the fact that fees are more expensive on Saturday to Sunday, the park is usually fully booked and overcrowded with long waiting and at the end the experience is less good.

2024 First-timers Guide to Mt Pulag: Highest Mountain in Luzon (Expenses + Itinerary)

Joana Paola Gutierrez

Updated as of January 2024. I was one of those people who got delayed on their Mt Pulag dreams because of the pandemic way back 2020. But surely it was a blessing in disguise to allow the mountains to rest from tourists! So yeah , everything is cool . (Guide To Mt Pulag)

The long wait is finally over now that I was able to conquer the highest mountain in Luzon. I am excited to share with you my trip to the Playground of the Gods in this article. Continue reading below for some important tips and reminders!

Guide to Mt Pulag

Table of Contents

About Mt Pulag

Nestled 2,926 above sea level lies the famous and breathtaking “Playground of the Gods” . With its scenic view of rolling hills beneath the sea of clouds, you will surely feel like you are on top of the world. Sitting on the foothills are the Ibaloys and Kankanaey Village.

Mt Pulag is the 3rd highest mountain in the country next to Mt Apo and Mt Dulang-Dulang. Not only that it is famous for its sea of clouds but mountaineers go here to witness an exceptional view of the Milky Way Galaxy at dawn.

Did you know? The indigenous mountain of Mt Pulag is considered by locals as sacred because it is believed to be the resting place of their ancestors, people could appear and disappear. The elders suggest to ask permission to the anitos before entering so that they will not be disturbed. Otherwise, strong winds and bad climate will suddenly appear.

Trails & Difficulty

Even if Mt Pulag is the highest mountain in Luzon, it’s difficulty is fairly 3/9 . Meaning to say that the trail is easy to follow and with less difficulties compared to other mountains. The hike will take you about 4-6 hours depending on your pacing. For us we managed to climb it for approximately 5 hours and another 5 hours going back.

There are about 4 rails to Mt Pulag. The 2 famous trails are the Akiki and Ambangeg trail. Akiki is also known as the killer trail while Ambangeg trail is for beginners. For more information about the trails available, you may read more about it here .

2 Days 1 Night Itinerary + Attractions Via Travel Agency (Guide to Mt Pulag)

I highly recommend getting an arranged tour if you are traveling with a group, you may check Yamang Pinas on Facebook. A 2 days 1 Night Mt. Pulag tour costs Php3,500.00 (all included).

Side-trip at Ambuklao Dam

Our first side-trip was Ambuklao Dam which is approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes from Baguio City. Here you will see a wide range of fresh water and hills circling around it.

Side-trip at Sulfur Spring

After about 40 minutes from Ambuklao Dam is the Sulfur Spring.

The Ranger Station

Before arriving at the Ranger Station, there will be a short briefing and orientation at the DENR. You can walk around the Ranger Station to check out the village and the scenic view of the mountains. Below is a photo of me at the Ranger Station with the local kids.

We started the hike from the Ranger Station at 1:00 in the morning and was able to reach Camp 1 after an hour. After Camp 1 is another 2 hour hike to Camp 2.

Mossy Forest

Prepare yourselves for a very entertaining trek! The mossy forest is one of the best view during our Mt Pulag 5-hour hike. Honestly I think it took us about an hour for photoshoots during our descent. It’s like an Alice in Wonderland theme or Into the Woods.

The mossy forest will start after Camp 1 until Camp 2. Here you will witness how rich and indigenous Mt Pulag is.

mt pulag mossy forest

Dwarf Bamboo Forest

Subsequently, just after the Mossy Forest is the Dwarf Bamboo Forest. This starts from Camp 2 going to the peak of Mt Pulag. Before reaching the peak, you will pass by Peak 4, Peak 3, Peak 2 and the summit itself. In this trail you will also see some indigenous plants around.

Guide to Mt Pulag

The Summit & The Grassland Mountain

Mt Pulag is every hiker’s dream and it’s not hard to see why! The exceptional view of the grassland mountains will surely take your breath away. At last, after 2 years of patiently waiting, here lies in front of my naked eye one of the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I finally conquered Mt Pulag !

We were blessed with such beautiful scenery that can only be seen after working hard for it. I am proud to have been given the chance to climb this humble mountain.

DIY Expenses

Below are the expenses and fees to expect when in Mt Pulag. For DIY travelers, homestays are everywhere near the Ranger Station, just ask around. Homestays are Php500.00/pax/night.

May I ask what month is this? I mean your hike to Pulag. Thank you

Hello! It was 1st week of April 2022. 🙂

Hi, would you know if the porter fee of 1000 is only one way going up to Camp 2? Does this not include going down from Camp 2. Thanks!

Hello Alex! The porter fee includes roundtrip. 🙂

Hi Joana, are guides available around the area. Or should the climb be booked through a travel agency?

Hello Raymond! Guides are limited in the area as well as the number of visitors, you can expect it to be fully booked on weekends. If you wish to go without a Travel Agency, it is best to contact the DENR in advance for reservation. To avoid the hassle might as well book with a Travel Agency. 🙂

Hi Joanna, couple of questions, do you leave your other stuff/bags at the homestay when you hike up to Mt Pulag? If you’re staying at the homestay, do you still need to bring blankets, towels & utensils or will all these be provided?

Hey Charlie! 🙂 Yeah we leave our bags at our homestay and bring only water and gadgets with us. Blankets and utensils are usually provided.

hello, I could like to climb DIY. How to apply at Denr office in advance?

Mt Pulag 2023 – Hiking Guide and Tips

mt pulag tour package 2023

Mt Pulag In A Glimpse

As the third highest in the Philippines and the highest of them all in Luzon dubbed as the “Playground of the Gods”, Mt. Pulag has arguably been in any hiking or outdoor’s enthusiast’s bucket list. It stands at 2,926 MASL and its width spans across the provinces of Ifugao, Benguet, and Nueva Vizcaya. The easiest and less technical way to reach the summit in 4-5 hours from its jump-off, Ranger Station, at Kabayan, Benguet for the Ambangeg Trail. This trail is perfect for beginners. The other routes, Tawangan and Akiki, pose extra challenges with assaults and technicality but said to have more beautiful and raw trails. They say the best and most ideal time to hike is during summer when there is less to no typhoons yet.

mt pulag tour package 2023

According to UNESCO , Mt Pulag is formally called as Mt. Pulag National Park and is a site of National Integrated Protected Areas Programme (NIPAP). The park is filled with impressive floras and faunas you’ll see along the trails.

Our Climb – May 23-24, 2023

mt pulag tour package 2023

I was still so excited to climb Mt Pulag even though that was going to be my third time already. A lot has changed since I first reached its summit (such as the need to prove you’re healthy and fit to climb it) and there are more home stays available now in the Ranger Station, its jump-off. Circa 2014/2015, we used to just camp out in the cold, cold night in our borrowed tents that we pitched right after we arrived from a rugged trip through the rough roads to Kabayan, Benguet.

mt pulag tour package 2023

Nonetheless, every experience is different and you will never experience the same destination twice. That’s what I said in my Instagram post, or implied. Hehe.

I went for the third time because my second attempt to summit it failed. We were all drenched as we reached Camp 2 in February 2023. It was raining nonstop and a typhoon was said to have fallen that day. We didn’t continue and we said we’d come back in May.

mt pulag tour package 2023

And we made it happen in May. This time, I went again with my boyfriend and I am so happy I did it. Plus, another set of friends came too, who are some of the best I have, which became another motivation to push through.

For this trip, we went on a weekday (Monday-Tuesday) because having experienced a weekend climb, I didn’t want to climb again with heavy traffic of people on the trails waiting for their turns to take photos on the summit. We want to fully experience Mt Pulag. As a freelancer, I can easily arranged my schedule but the others had to take work leaves (But I guess it was all worth it because we had clearing!)

mt pulag tour package 2023

Last time, we arrived at Ranger Station at around 4pm already instead of 10am as per our itinerary because of the long line of groups who will do the orientation at the DENR Station. Just imagine how big the crowds are during weekends! This time, fortunately, as what we expected on a weekday, we arrived, took lunch, and had a quick rest at around 11am at our homestay.

mt pulag tour package 2023

It was cold, foggy, and sometimes drizzling the whole afternoon and most of us slept. There was no signal at all in where we stayed at and we had to find a connection nearby. This was okay because we were able to just talk to each other and unplug.

mt pulag tour package 2023

The next morning, we started our hike at 1:00am. The whole hike was cool, not too chilly, and we were sweating as we trekked. As we almost reached the summit, we were greeted by one of the most beautiful sunrises ever. The layers of mountains were breathtaking. The skies were clear and the sun gave us warmth to comfort us from the cold. There were less groups at the summit and the experience was truly enjoyable.

Now that the story’s is done, sharing with you here our itinerary and some more tips especially if it’s going to be your first time hiking Mt Pulag!

From transportation, homestay, meals, and guides, he arranged it all and we just paid. You can contact him on Facebook if you’re interested in hiking Mt. Pulag – Greg Galicia.

However, if you want to do it yourself, you should contact the Kabayan Municipal Tourism Office directly at [email protected] or call at 09667221842 for the guide and transportation arrangements and find a homestay to book at the Ranger Station. Table of Contents

The sea of clouds during the morning is the biggest draw of Mt. Pulag. A vast and ethereal sea of cotton clouds hovers slowly over the mountains of the Cordillera every morning. One wouldn’t imagine it possible, but this mountain makes it plausible given you brave its cold and challenging trails.

Mt. Pulag in Kabayan, Benguet

A popular weekend destination for travelers and mountaineers, Mt. Pulag ceaselessly amazes everyone with its surreal panoramic vistas. For the fifth time around, after hiking Akiki-Ambangeg trail in 2016, the Ambangeg trail in 2017 and 2019, and the Tawangan trail last 2022, I once again visited the rooftop of Luzon last February 2023 on a spontaneous trip!

Where is Mt. Pulag?

Rising at 2,926 meters above sea level, Mt. Pulag is the highest peak in Luzon and the third in the country after Mt. Dulang-Dulang in Bukidnon (Adventure HERE ). Located in Bokod, Benguet, Mt. Pulag National Park borders the provinces of Benguet, Ifugao, and Nueva Vizcaya with the tripoint at the very summit.

Mt. Pulag in Kabayan, Benguet

Mt. Pulag has four (4) trails of varying trail lengths and difficulties and as follows:

  • Ambangeg Trail – is the most accessible and easiest trail leading to the summit. Often dubbed as the Artista Trail , this trail is around eight (8) kilometers long and with only a 500-meter elevation gain from the Babadak Ranger Station. (Difficulty: 3/9, 3-4 hours to summit, doable in 1-2 days)

  • Akiki Trail – dubbed as the Killer Trail because of the almost never-ending sharp ascents from Eddet River until one reaches Saddle or Camp 3. The hike commences at the Akiki Ranger Station of Tujakap in Brgy. Duacan in Kabayan, Benguet. Trail length is also the same with Ambangeg at eight (8) kilometers long but with a 1,700-meter elevation gain (Difficulty: 7/9, 10-11 hours to summit, doable in 2-3 days)

Mt. Pulag in Kabayan, Benguet

  • Ambaguio Trail – is the longest trail of them all and starts in Ambaguio, Nueva Vizcaya. The trail length is around twenty-four (24) kilometers long and with an elevation gain of 2,400 meters.
  • Tawangan Trail – is a leech-infested trail that starts in Kabayan, Benguet. This trail is the most preserved since even locals hardly pass by through here. The trail length from Kabayan has an elevation gain of around 1,300 meters.

Years ago, I had the chance to do the famed Mt Pulag hike which is one of the best weekend getaways from Manila … and boy, it was amazing!

At that time, I have never climbed a mountain before so I was a bit hyped and anxious about the trip — of course, we were going on the easy trail, but I have heard of people saying that it can still be a challenge… Nonetheless, I wasn’t planning on backing down from it, especially because I was set on seeing this view:

Mt Pulag Hike: Sea of Clouds

Some travelers have been unfortunate on their hike because they are usually greeted by rain; but since it was April at that time and it was freaking hot in Manila and the Philippines all over, I had high hopes that I would see this view.

Here’s how my experience went!

Table of Contents

Mt Pulag Hike

Mt. Pulag towers 2,922 meters above sea level. It is the highest peak in Luzon and the 3rd highest mountain in the country in which a large part is regarded as a National Park!

The mountain also has over hundreds of documented plant species and wildlife, some of which are the Philippine deer, cloud rat (4 species of them), “ bowet “, and the long-haired fruit bat.

There are 4 major trails to the summit, namely for Benguet: the Ambangeg (for beginners), Akiki (challenging, takes about 10 hours), and Tawangan . If from Nueva Vizcaya, the Ambaguio trail.

Some people often combine the trails such as Akiki-Ambangeg, totaling to about 16km in total.

Since we were beginners, we took the Ambangeg trail (takes around 4 to 6 hours) .

» Best Season to Do Mt Pulag Hike

It’s highly recommended to do your hike around November to March, a season wherein there is less rain.

» Tour Companies for Pulag

You can definitely DIY the hike to Mount Pulag, but as with any hiking experience, it’s best to do it with other people to ensure your safety — as well as for hassle-free planning. For this trip, we decided to go with a tour company called Travel Factor .

Other tour companies that you can check out are: – Yamang Pinas – Tanawin Travel & Tours – Harkours

» What to Bring

With our tour company’s guidance, we were told to bring the following…

  • Sleeping Bags and Sleeping Mat To protect you from the cold and to give you comfort from the hard ground
  • Water Bottles 2-3 liters per person should be enough. (Bring more of course if you get thirsty rather quickly).
  • Flashlights or Headlights
  • Backpack If you don’t have a rain-proof one, make sure to wrap your things inside in plastic; just in case!
  • Snacks for the hike Lots of it! Consider packing energy gels too that are great for replenishing carbohydrates (usually taken by runners)
  • Gloves, scarf, bonnet/cap …anything to heat you up! They weren’t kidding when they said that it’s gonna be chilly during our Mt Pulag hike — and I tell you, it was MORE than chilly. It was ice cold!! (I’ll tell you more about this later on.)
  • Hat To protect yourself from the heat during the Mt Pulag hike.
  • Clothes. Preferably rain-proof jacket, rain-proof pants. RAIN-PROOF EVERYTHING.
  • Extra clothes for layering.
  • Rain Gear Again, another just in case, and definitely no umbrellas. If you don’t have ‘rain gear’, you can use trash bags.
  • First Aid and Medicines If you are prone to motion sickness, best to pack up Bonamine for the drive up the mountains.
  • Hiking Shoes …and hiking poles if you have those. Not really required; only for your ease.
  • Extra Footwear A light one; a slipper for example. Just in case your shoes accidentally get ruined.
  • Lots of Plastic To put your trash into, clothes, etc. etc. Don’t throw any of these away in that mountain of course!
  • Eating Utensils

Now can you tell me what’s missing from this list?

….yep, you’re right. A tent. Your meals.

I haven’t included it because Travel Factor will provide it for us — for you! This is one of the perks that you’ll get to experience when you book your Mt Pulag hike with them. More than that, their package also includes the round-trip journey, bus/jeep fare, meals, insurance, and more!

But of course, you might have to share a space in the tent assigned to you with another person(s); so if you want total privacy, please do bring your own to set up and carry.

What to Do & What to Expect

Tip 1: pack light and right.

Mt Pulag Hiking Trail

This is common knowledge, but I feel the need to reiterate it because some hikers just seem like they’re going to elope given the number and size of their bags on this regular hike.

Sure, that much packing and preparedness will help strengthen your chances of survival if you get lost in the mountain (let’s hope that doesn’t happen)… but for simple hikes such as this Mt Pulag hike, it’s best to contain yourself. And by that, I mean: just pack light and only the essentials.

I considered myself to as out-of-shape back when I did this hike, but I managed with a medium-sized day pack (not even those hiking backpacks) and it all contained the things that I needed. I didn’t need a porter either (someone who could carry your things for you) .

But of course, it’s best to let go of your pride and hire a porter if you know that you can’t manage long hours of hiking with your bag on your back.

– – –

TIP 2: Brace yourself for the ride up

Philippines Jeepney Ride

The image might not make sense to you, but hear me out: the jeepney ride is to die for. Not.

The thing is, the first few hours to Mt Pulag will be blissful, just like your voyage from Manila to Baguio with Victory Liner: hello to flat and well-cemented roads!

But say goodbye to it because as it goes high up to the DENR station, it’s gonna get bumpy!

I hardly get dizzy or nauseous on trips no matter how serpentine or ragged the drive could be, but… this one got me. I got dizzy at one point and it was horrible! So as a precaution, it’s best that you take a pill of Bonamine, sleep before the voyage, or pray that in time, they fix those roads.

FEES ( taken care of by Travel Factor) . Entrance fee: – Non-Philippine residents – US$ 15.00/person (Php720~) – Philippine Residents – Php100.00/person . Camping fee: – Non-Philippine residents – Php50.00/person/day – Philippine residents – Php50.00/person/day . Green tax for Philippine/Non-Philippine Residents: Php25.00/person . All hikers are required to take licensed or trained tour guides.

TIP 3: Listen & follow well

DENR Orientation

A requirement before going through the hike: a brief stop at the DENR station to attend a required orientation briefing.

Mt. Pulag is a protected area so by all means, listen, follow, and respect nature as it is. We have polluted Manila enough so let’s not pollute this place as well, okay?

Basically, you just need to abide by the reminders that they tell you. Some examples: (1) no spitting, (2) no shouting, (3) no taking or reckless touching of plants, (4) stay on the trail, and more.

TIP 4: Gear up!

Baba Lak Ranger Station: Mt. Pulag National Park

After another rocky jeepney ride up, you’ll come to the second stop: Baba Lak Ranger Station , and in here, you can prepare for your hike. (We also had lunch here, c/o Travel Factor.)

If I may impart an important tip that you should do before starting your Mt Pulag hike: go and abuse the restroom .

If you gotta go, then go! It’s hard to find a good spot during the hike to ‘relieve’ yourself so it’s better now than later. It’s actually a sub-par toilet (excuse me, I meant dirty) but it’s better than the one high up in the mountains. You’ll see what I’m talking about later on in this post.

Also, eat and pack some energy here. There are small sari-sari stores around this area so if you forgot to bring water (important!) or snacks along the way, buy them here. After that, gear up: wear the proper hiking clothes, secure your bags, and hire a porter if you must. It’s not so much, costing around Php300 for the porter.

TIP 5: Pack enough water

Spring Water : Mt. Pulag

I know that I’ve already said it above, but I’ll say it again: 2-3 Liters of water per person should be enough for a one-way hike up.

And please, if you have read/heard people say that there are clean water springs up the mountain…. please don’t put so much trust in that advice especially if it is summer because the springs along the trail were dry (they are always marked with a signpost like this) .

During our Mt Pulag hike, there wasn’t that much water in it, not even a drop — a muddy drop maybe, but basically: NILL.

They said it hasn’t rained for a while, so go figure! Still… even if you went here on a good season and you’re picky with the water you drink, then it’s better to bring your own.

If you rather plan on using the spring water, take note of the signage: don’t take a bath there (then again, who takes a bath in the middle of the trail road?) and don’t wash your clothes/shoes/utensils there either.

TIP 6: Take a rest

Mt Pulag Hike Trail

Like I’ve already mentioned, my friend and I were both in bad shape when we did this hike and we often needed some time to catch our breath!

Remember that you’re human, so it’s okay to admit that you have your limits. Don’t be scared if people are passing you by during your Mt Pulag hike when you feel that your body badly desires a break — because sweetie, it’s not a race.

You’re going to reach the top sooner or later; it doesn’t matter, so do take your time . But don’t abuse it okay? Taking more than 6 hours to do the Ambangeg trail is overkill. I think we only took around 4 hours of hiking up to our camping spot.

And oh, just another reminder: whenever you pass someone, especially a local from the tribes, say hello/hi/good morning/good afternoon as a sign of respect. And also, do take the liberty of enjoying the view, enjoying your drink, enjoying your snack… and yes, of course, harassing your camera. Click away like mad!

There are a lot of good views, sceneries, and flora that are worth taking pictures of. But again, don’t take too much and take all of your camera’s capacity because the view up the summit of Mt. Pulag is going to be way better!

TIP 7: Prepare for the “5-star” toilets

Hiking Trail Toilets

Since this section is also about ‘what to expect’, then yes. Expect THIS kind of toilet.

This is part of a true hiking experience, ladies and gentlemen. So you better be ready for it!

TIP 8: Be camping-equipped

Camping Grounds Mount Pulag

By the time we reached these camping grounds, we weren’t at the top yet — but the surrounding view was already breathtaking!

We arrived here around 5PM, right on time to see the sunset! We took pictures, socialized, and ate; but, we slept early too in order to prepare for our early morning hike to the top.

Again, no need to bring tents because Travel Factor gives them to you. But let me just say it again: the important things you should bring are a sleeping bag and a mat . The sleeping bag will help you in the cold and the mat will help protect your body as a whole from the hard ground.

We made the error of not bringing mats and did our bodies ache the morning after!

TIP 9: Don’t underestimate the cold

Mount Pulag Sunset

Just… DON’T.

This was another error on our part (we kept making errors, haha!). We were thinking that since it was summer anyway and heck, we’re in the Philippines… then it wouldn’t get too cold, right? A jacket and some pants would do it, right?

Come nighttime and early AM we were shivering like little puppies in the cold. It was crazy!

We layered up for sure, but it was still damn cold. We didn’t bring gloves or scarves either so thank goodness we packed a lot of socks. We doubled it up on our feet and even wore it like gloves for added heat! Some people just ended up staying awake because of the cold. Yep… It was that bad.

Take note of this: we went up to Pulag in the heat of the summer but it was still darn cold in the evenings (actually even during the day) so how much more if you were hiking up here during the rainy season, right?

We really could have never imagined that it would be that cold up there. I mean it makes sense because it’s not like we’re all accustomed to such temperatures, but still, I think we reached 2 degrees that night! …And it even felt colder than that as the night went on.

TIP 10: Be careful & leave no trace — take only pictures!

Mount Pulag Sunrise Walk

By 3AM, we all set out for a hike to the top to witness the sunrise and the sea of clouds (if we were lucky!) . It wasn’t a problem to sleep early because we were exhausted, but it was a bit hard to wake up.

As for the scene, it will be relatively pitch black so you should arm yourself with a good flashlight; better if it’s a headlamp so you don’t need to carry it around. This is pretty important because the trails up the mountain are steep and narrow.

As you can see from the photo above, the small white specks at the bottom are the flashlights of the hikers below us who were also making their way up to the summit.

…and then finally, after a couple of hours, we reached the top and saw a magnificent sunrise!

As for the sea of clouds? …unfortunately for us, there wasn’t much.

And I blame you, summer . Anyhow, we still did see a sea of clouds, but it was a bit far from where we were. I still loved the view and I couldn’t stop taking photos — which should be the only thing you “take” from the mountain! (Remember to stay on the trail and never leave your things and trash behind).

Pulag Mountain Sunrise

There were definitely a lot more pictures that we took, but I think this is enough for this post!

All in all, despite not seeing a lot of the famed sea-of-clouds at Mt. Pulag, we’ve got NO regrets. We absolutely enjoyed the hike and the views alone were phenomenal. It had also been a while since we last did a nature trek, so this was definitely refreshing for us!

Hiking Mount Pulag: A Complete Guide to Luzon’s Highest Peak

Have you ever thought of getting lost in the mountains or in caves, where there are endless routes you can take but you can’t seem to find your way out? There are multiple stories we can hear about this, stories of miracles by following a light. A magical light which they followed and found their way out. On our climb to Mt. Pulag I thought this would happen to me. Well, it did, and I saw lights to find my way back, only literally.

Table of Contents

About Mt. Pulag

At 2,926 masl, Mt. Pulag is the highest mountain in Luzon and the second highest in the Philippines. It is one of the most picturesque mountains in the whole country with multiple trails to choose from to get to the summit; Ambangeg Trail (easy trail), Akiki Trail (killer trail), and Tawangan Trail (bloody trail).

Dubbed as “Playground of the Gods”, Mt. Pulag is known for its sea of clouds, grasslands summit, and the cold temperature. The hike from the ranger station to the summit via Ambangeg Trail would take 2 hours for hardcore hikers and up to 10 hours (according to our guide) for beginners.

Pre-Hike Journal

Baguio city.

The night before going to Kabayan, my friends and I had dinner at the Good Taste restaurant and bought our camp food at the public market. We based our meal plan on what we could find at night in the public market. For our camp food, we bought rice, salted eggs, tomatoes, onions, string beans, and a sinigang mix.

Baguio City Public Market

At 10:00 the next day, we arrived at Dangwa Terminal and looked for public transportation going to Bokod or Kabayan, Benguet. Jeepneys and buses bound for Bokod or Kabayan either leave at 1:00 pm or 2:00 pm so we decided to board the van going to Bokod, which only leaves when it gets full. The one-way fare was Php 250 and we were the first passengers.

After 30 minutes of waiting for more passengers, we were forced by time to ask the driver how much it costs to hire a private van transfer from the terminal to Kabayan, so we could leave the terminal already. We were worried it would take hours to get all the seats full that we could not hike to Camp 2 on the same day. So we hired the van for Php 6,000, left the terminal at 11:30, and dropped by Mt. Pulag – DENR for orientation at 13:00.

Mt. Pulag – DENR

Mt. Pulag DENR

After a 30-minute orientation, we paid for the camping and entrance fees. They sell souvenir items like caps, shirts, gloves, etc. and we bought matching caps and also gloves.

After buying food in the nearby carinderia that sold rice for Php 20.00, we left for the ranger station at 14:20.

Babalak Ranger Station

Mt. Pulag Babalak Ranger Station

We reached Babalak Ranger Station at 14:40 and paid the fees for barangay maintenance, environmental and cultural heritage, and a guide/porter.

We also rented two 2-person tents for Php 900 and fixed our things for the porter before starting the hike to Camp 2.

Hike Journal

Babadak ranger station.

Mt. Pulag Babadak Ranger Station

Ten meters from the Babalak Ranger Station is the Babadak Ranger Station. I initially thought it is the same building, only old and new but when I studied their signages, the new building is spelled as Babalak and the old one as Babadak. I am still curious about the difference between them, or if Babalak and Babadak are the same and Babalak is supposed to be the new building for the ranger station. But there are different fees paid at both buildings and the new building looks more like a barangay hall.

So anyway, we started hiking from the Babadak Ranger Station at 15:40. The trail at the beginning was full of pine trees, similar to the Echo Valley in Sagada. For the first 10 minutes of hiking, the trail is still accessible by motorcycle. We also passed by teenagers who lived in the area, who seemed like they were going home from an outing.

Mt. Pulag Pine Trees

It took us 45 minutes of hiking to get to Camp 1. The hike was relatively smooth and easy. There were barely any uphills until the uphill near Camp 1.

Mt. Pulag Camp 1

We reached Camp 1 at 16:25, took photos, rested for 10 minutes, and left for Camp 2. It was a transition from a mossy forest to a bonsai forest on the trail, which looked really nice. The trail is very well-established; it is impossible to get lost even without a guide. It is also an easy hike. The terrain is beginner-friendly.

Mt. Pulag Mossy Forest

At 17:30, Marielle and I arrived at Camp 2 earlier than the group so we could set up camp while the sun was still out. But we were mesmerized by the grasslands just above the campsite so we took photos instead. When we were done taking photos, Kuya Ryan, our guide, already set up our tents for us.  Thank you, Kuya Ryan!

mt pulag tour package 2023

Camps 1 and 2 have comfort rooms, but I feel it’s better to bring a trowel and do your business properly in the forest if allowed.

The hardest thing for us wasn’t actually hiking but cooking dinner because we only had charcoal for cooking. We had a butane stove prepared but we couldn’t find a screw-type butane gas for it when we went to the public market, so we decided last-minute to use only charcoal for cooking at camp.

At the orientation, it was mentioned that a campfire is not allowed at Mt. Pulag, so we asked at the Ranger Station if using charcoal for cooking is allowed, and they said yes.

Mt. Pulag Camping

Kuya Ryan suggested we cook by the guides’ shelter and when they heard we could not start a fire from charcoal, they offered the butane stove they were using upstairs. We used the butane stove for cooking rice and while the rice was cooking, we still tried to use the charcoal for frying our smoked fish. It was really hard to start the fire, possibly due to lower oxygen at higher elevations, or the charcoal we bought just wasn’t easy to ignite. But to keep the fire going, we had to continuously fan the charcoal.

At around 20:00 to 21:00, we finally got to eat a well-deserved meal; rice, smoked fish, salted egg salad, string beans stir-fry, and a sinigang mix soup. We cooked everything we planned to eat until the next day. We actually regret having this much food for camping at Camp 2 because it took a lot of time to prepare. We could’ve just had cup noodles or canned goods but since we thought of including the guide in our camp meals, we opted for well-cooked food. Turns out, guides eat early and bring their own food so they were already sleeping when we tried to call them for dinner.

The Hike Before Dawn

We started hiking at quarter to 04:00. There wasn’t much to see hiking before sunrise because it was really dark. Although it was memorable when I almost got lost when I deviated from the usual route in the grasslands.

It started when I asked permission from Kuya Ryan if I can be ahead so I can sweat and be warm. He said to follow the lights from the other group ahead of us. The group in front of us was kind of fast that they also didn’t need to rest from Camp 2 to the summit. When I caught up and saw their lights turning right, I found a trail straight uphill. I immediately thought it was a shortcut and if you know me well, I definitely take uphill shortcuts without second thoughts. So I went uphill instead of following the other group that turned right going around the hill.

When I reached the top, I tried to wait for the lights that went around the hill to show up, but there was none. The trail also got scattered; it was hard to find the established path in the dark. I still waited for the lights to show up for a few minutes until it became foggy and I couldn’t see the bottom of the hill anymore. It was creepy enough to see the fog at the bottom of the hill, what more if it thickens and covers the whole hill, so I decided to turn back.

It was still really dark and I couldn’t find the route I came from. It was scary for a few minutes not knowing the way until I saw a group of lights from afar, on the trail. I was flashing my light to them from the top of the hill. They knew I was not on the trail so they stayed where they were so I could follow their lights back. It took me 5 minutes to find the trail downhill and was very thankful for that group who didn’t mind waiting for me to find my way back.

When I caught up with Kuya Ryan and the rest of the group, it turned out I was also right. It was a shortcut and Kuya Ryan said he estimates I would reach the summit from Camp 2 in only 40 minutes if I didn’t turn back.

It was 04:40 when we reached the summit. Sometimes there are two confusing paths you could choose from while navigating the trail, but they will meet on the other end. Kuya Ryan mentioned there was only one path where you could easily get lost in. It was the path to Akiki Trail near the summit and Kuya Ryan said it would be hard to find you if you get lost in there.

Mt. Pulag Marker

The sunrise was amazing and the sea of clouds also showed up. We were incredibly lucky for our first time hiking at Mt. Pulag. We spent hours at the summit, taking photos and admiring the sunrise, sea of clouds, and layers of the Cordillera mountains. It was Tuesday and there were several people who shared the summit with us and I could only imagine what it would be like if we hiked during the weekend. It would be really crowded.

Mt. Pulag Sea of Clouds

Hiking back, we could finally appreciate the beauty of the grasslands surrounding us. Every part of the Ambangeg Trail is a feast for the eyes, from the pine trees, mossy forest, bonsai trees, to the grasslands. I finally understand why even non-mountaineers would want to hike Mt. Pulag.

Mt. Pulag Grasslands

Kuya Ryan also had a trivia for us on our hike back. Did you know Ambangeg, the name of the easiest trail to the summit of Mt. Pulag, means lots of ghosts, or in Kuya Ryan’s words “madaming mumu”? It was definitely something to ponder while hiking, was it because of the mossy forest or the vast grasslands? Good thing I didn’t know about this when I almost got lost on the shortcut earlier. The fog and the darkness were creepy enough, it would be the worst to add a ghost in the fog in my imagination.

At 07:20, we made it back to Camp 2. We ate breakfast, rested and/or slept for an hour, and headed back at 09:00 for the van at the jump-off point we were supposed to meet at 12:00. We took our time hiking back, taking lots of pictures in the mossy forest and resting at Camp 1 for almost an hour.

Post-Hike Journal

We reached the van by 12:00 and made a side trip to Badekbek Sulfur Spring at Daclan, Bokod, Benguet, before heading back to Baguio City.

All you need to know

As per orientation, there are water sources along the trail, from Camp 1 to Camp 2, but potability is not ensured.

Transportation

From Baguio City, you can hire a van or ride public transportation to Kabayan, Benguet. We happened to bargain a semi-private van transfer for Php 6,000 for a round trip cost from Dangwa Terminal to Kabayan, Benguet. Other people have also recommended hiring a monster jeep but it is more expensive at Php 9,000 round trip.

For public transportation, you can either go to Dangwa Terminal or Slaughter House and here are the one-way fares:

At Dangwa Terminal Van to Bokod : Php 250 (Only leaves until full) Jeep to Kabayan : Php 100 (Leaves at 1:00 pm)

At Slaughter House Bus to Kabayan and Vice Versa : Php 100 (Leaves every 9:00 am and 2:00 pm)

The tricky part about riding public transportation is that you have to get off at Mt. Pulag DENR for orientation, and it is roughly 20 more kilometers to get to the Ranger Station. What I would do if I took public transportation to DENR is to hitch a ride to the ranger station from other groups you meet at the orientation. Our van driver had also mentioned you can ride a habal-habal from DENR to the ranger station for Php 500.

Hiking Fees

Mount Pulag National Park DENR Bokod, Benguet Entrance Fee: 175 Camping Fee: 50

Babadak/ Babalak Ranger Station Kabayan, Benguet Barangay Maintenance Fee: 30 Environment & Cultural Heritage Fee: 150 Guide Fee: 1,200

Extras Porter Fee: 1,000 Tent Rental: 450 x 2

Sample Expenses

  • It’s best to spend the sunset at the summit and sunrise at the tower site near Camp 2. The sea of clouds will be nearer from the tower.
  • Ber months are the coldest months for hiking, and proper layering of clothes is needed.
  • If you’re buying food, butane gas, and other hiking stuff last-minute, Dangwa Terminal is just in front of the public market so it’s very convenient.
  • Mt. Pulag – DENR and Ranger Station is open for hikers all week long.
  • If you’re going to spend overnight at Camp 2, the cut-off for hiking is 5 pm.
  • You can prepare everything at the last minute if you’re hiking during weekdays, but you have to secure your slot at DENR and book a homestay (if opted) if you hike during the weekends.

Happy hiking!

Mt Pulag DIY Travel Guide (via Ambangeg Trail)

When I think of hiking, Mt Pulag is the first thing that comes to mind.

Mt Pulag is widely known for being the third highest mountain in the Philippines and the highest in Luzon. It is famous for having a view of a sea of clouds.

Having it on my bucket list, my friends and I planned to climb it.

How To Get There (Step-by-Step Guide)

*If you’re starting from Manila to Mt Pulag, simply ride any bus heading to Baguio.

Travel Tip: You can book Victory Liner tickets to Baguio online with 12Go Asia.

First, ride a van to Kabayan

From Baguio, ride a van going to Kabayan for 120 pesos. On the way, you will have a short break and stop by Jang Jang Eatery for breakfast and a much-needed bathroom break.

Behind the restaurant, you can find this hanging bridge. Pretty awesome. Below is an almost dried-up river. We took hundreds of photos here!

mt pulag

After a hearty meal, you’ll be on your way. Don’t forget to tell the driver to drop you off at the DENR station

Then, register at the DENR

At the DENR office, register and pay the 200 pesos DENR fee. You will then be asked to watch a video orientation regarding the dos and don’ts when hiking Mt Pulag.

Here, you can also buy some souvenirs and shirts. If you want to wear that “I survived Mt Pulag” shirt for the photoshoot at the summit, go for it. My friends bought theirs and wore it to the peak.

If you don’t have tents, you can also rent some here.

Afterwards, visit the Ranger Station

From DENR, ride a habal-habal to the ranger station. The usual fare is 500 per person.

We were quite lucky since we found a van on the way to the Ranger Station. We paid 350 pesos each.

Once you arrive at the Ranger Station, you’ll be paying for the guide, camping, and entrance fees.

It’s time to start hiking!

After eating lunch, we started hiking. We chose the Ambangeg Trail since it’s the easiest and the shortest trail to the summit.

Hike to Camp 2 will take 4 to 6 hours depending on how fast you can walk while another 1-2 hours from Camp 2 to Mt Pulag’s summit.

There are two other trails namely Akiki Trail and Tawangan Trail. If you want more challenge try these.

On the way, we passed by berries, saw vegetable terraces, and tons of trees. As a girl who grew up in the mountains, I’d say the trail was quite easy. There were only a handful of steep areas.

Talking with our guide, we found out that most of the language spoken near Mt Pulag is Kalanguya, Kankanaey, and Ibaloi.

I only know how to speak Kankanaey so when I heard him talk to other guides in Kalanguya, I was in awe. It sounds a bit like a combination of Ibaloi and Kankanaey.

Rest in Camp 1

During the trek we noticed the sceneries changing, from pine trees to bonsai-shaped trees.

Our guide told us that we had entered the montane forest which has a collection of various flora, mosses, and the weirdly shaped trees. After two hours, we finally reached camp 1.

The plants here were so pretty, some I know of and some I’ve never seen before.

While resting, we played some cards and moved on after 20 minutes of rest.

On the way to camp 2, we observed that there are more mosses and bonsai-shaped trees.

The landscapes were too good to pass. For all those Instagram worthy shots, here are some of the best places to take a picture.

There’s nothing better than taking a photo of these fantastic tree roots! Careful though, you might trip.

We set up our tents, ate some snacks, and went on to find the best spot to watch the sunset.

Just a few meters from the campsite, there is this part where the mossy forest meets the dwarf bamboos. It’s crazy.

We hiked a small hill to get a better view of the summit and there it is.

A word to describe it? Bald. And that’s where the name Pulag came from – the local term “Pul-ag” meaning bald.

We reached the ranger station after almost 4 hours.

We rested, ate lunch and then said our goodbyes to our guide.

After hearing that the group who came before us rented a jeepney going back to Baguio, we asked them if they still had some space. They said yes, but their supposed departure was two hours later.

Because we got too impatient, we chose to walk down the road to the DENR. We’ll ride when the jeep passes by. But that didn’t happen.

Long story short, we walked for two hours hoping that we’d reach the DENR office by then.

We didn’t. We kept asking locals if the DENR office was near, each gave us different answers.

One said, “Yes, just 30 minutes more”. Another said, “You’d have to walk for another 2 hours”.

Eventually, we got too tired and tried to hitchhike a private vehicle. A kind driver took pity on us and let us ride his van.

Salamat manong.

We tried giving him some money for the gas as payment, but he declined. If we continued our descent to the DENR office, it might’ve been nightfall before we reached it.

Day 2 – Depending on your guide, you might have to start your trek at 10 PM or 12 midnight to reach the summit just in time for sunrise.

Tips and Reminders

  • Recently, medical certificates are required to ensure that you are in good health before you can start hiking. Be sure to bring one.
  • It gets colder as you reach the summit. Temperature can reach zero levels, especially from December to February. Bring a thick jacket. Layer your clothes.
  • There are a lot of hikers during the weekends and holidays. It is better to hike during weekdays when there are fewer people.
  • Plan ahead. Often the mountain is fully booked due to its popularity, contact PASU to reserve your slots.

Call Mt Pulag National Park Management  on the following numbers: 09199951316, 09196315402, 09103010423

Hello Johanes!

Thank you for this! Out of all the Mt. Pulag guides I’ve read, I think this is the most helpful and straight to the point. May I ask several questions? I am a first time hiker and am currently deciding with 4 other friends if we should DIY or if we should get a tour.

1.) We are going there via private van with driver. What time do you think we should depart Manila? 2.) How much food did you bring and what meals did you cook yourselves/buy? 3.) Are the guides/ porters easily available at DENR or Ranger’s Station? Should we buy/cook food for them as well?

Hope to hear from you soon! Thank you!

Hi Diane! Thanks for taking the time to read my blog 🙂 1. If you’re coming from Manila, it’s best to start early. Around 12-1 AM will do, so you can begin hiking early to Pulag. 2. Haha. Good question. My friends and I bought cup noodles. We brought some baon for the first day, bread and budget meals. On the second day, we simply poured hot water into the cups. 3. Guides and porters are available at the Ranger’s station. There’s no need to buy/cook food for them, but there’s nothing wrong with sharing, too. 🙂

' src=

Hi. I’m planning to do a DIY climp too. Your blog is a huge help.I’d like to ask if there’s a nearby clinic from the DENR Office where I can have my physical exam for the medcert? Thanks a lot. 🙂

Hi Gerone, I’m not sure if there’s a nearby clinic. It’s best if you get your medcert before going to Mt Pulag.

' src=

hello, I just like to clarify if camping is allowed in mt pulag? I thought they banned camping at mt pulag due to environmental reasons?

' src=

Hi Ms. Johanes. Itatanung ko lang po kung magkanu po ang rental ng tent sakaling wala kaming dalang tent at kung meron din po bang narerent na cooking set po doon? Salamat po.

Yes. Last time na pumunta kami, may rent ng tent. Price is depende sa size. I think 300 and above ung rentals. Sa cooking set naman, I’m not sure kung merong for rent. 🙂

' src=

>hi maam. Diba pwde ka rin mag home stay sa ranger station.. Instead of pitching a tent.. May idea po kau magkano room dun.? Tnx

' src=

hi! thanks for the informative blog. may i ask how much yung rent ng jeep papuntang ranger station?meron bang rent for two way ride? and how much? thanks in advance!

' src=

Look at those sea of clouds! I’d love to visit Mt Pulag sometime.

' src=

just wanna ask about med cert na 100? iba pa un sa papagawa mo here in manila or yung mga pupunta dun na walng med cert?

Open na po mt pulag ngayong December?

Travel Guide to Mt. Pulag, Philippines DIY Itinerary

1. Witness the Sea of Clouds

What this place is famous for is its “sea of clouds” which can be usually seen in the early morning. You’ll have to endure waking up early (or not sleeping at all) and trek for four hours to get to the top. It’s a challenging experience, but reaching the summit plus a breathtaking view will make it worth it!

Camping is surely a great experience, especially when done with your family or friends.  You can camp near the ranger station during the weekends but the weekday option is more amazing. You’ll get to sleep at Camp 2, which is just 2-3 hours from the peak. Socialize with fellow campers, too. Who knows? You might meet your destiny.

3. Take Nothing but Pictures

When you reach the top, take a lot of pictures and be proud of your success. It will undeniably be beautiful, especially with the view of the sunrise and the clouds. The management, however, warns you of taking selfies along the way, as it might be dangerous. You could take unlimited ones when you reach the top. P.S. Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footsteps (Don’t litter!)

Here are the expenses you might incur during your trip.

  • DENR Fee – PHP 175
  • LGU Fee – PHP 150
  • Guide Fee – PHP 120 – 150
  • Camping Fee – PHP 50 (for Camp 2)

First Timer’s Guide to Climbing Mt. Pulag

Every year, I like doing something new. So, I decided to conquer not just any mountain but the playground of the gods, Mt. Pulag. However, I was unsure if my less-than-enthusiastic hiking background would measure up. Despite my initial doubts, I embraced the challenge. In this post, I’ll share my journey as a first timer in Mt. Pulag.

It’s essential to note that this post reflects my experience camping at camp 2, which may differ from experiences arranged by tour operators. As most package tours are typically scheduled on weekends, you’re likely to stay in one of the homestays in Kabayan, Benguet.

Hiking Mt. Pulag

Mt. Pulag stands as the third highest peak in the Philippines, soaring to 2,928 meters above sea level. This majestic mountain features sea of clouds, vast grasslands, enchanting mossy and pine forests, and serene dwarf bamboo-covered slopes. In response to the ecotourism concerns due to continued influx of visitors, rules for climbing Mt. Pulag changed significantly in the last couple of years.

First Timer’s Preparation for Mt. Pulag

Honestly, I was a little worried because my experience in mountain climbing was limited to short and easy treks like in Osmena Peak, Cebu . Not only that, I don’t have the necessary hiking gears and survival kits. I don’t even have a hiking shoes. Thanks to my mom’s ukay ukay finds and borrowed stuff from my friends. These gave me about 75% chance of surviving the extreme temperature in the mountains. Lol!

Day 1 (Journey to Camp 2)

Baguio city to the ranger station.

We arrived in Baguio City at around 4 in the morning. After breakfast, we rode a monster jeep that took us to the DENR office. The whole trip was rough, and the zig zag path was unbearable. Good thing, the fantastic views of the cordillera mountains and the river offered a magnificent respite.

After a brief orientation at the DENR office, we continued the journey to the ranger station. When we arrived, there were a lot of mountaineers gathered around the place. We had lunch, and we immediately prepared for the climb.

Ascend to Mt. Pulag Camp 2

The journey up to the camp 2 was rewarding and exhausting at the same time. There was no heavy rainfall along the way, but the trail was challenging for first timers. I was expecting a walk-in-a-park climb, but certainly this one was not. This was supposedly the easiest trail. Lol! Thank God I prepared for this climb. I ran every weekend for two months to condition myself.

mt pulag tour package 2023

I decided not to take tons of pictures just so I can savor the moment. I promised myself that I would preserve this experience well in my memory. Though I was exhausted, I still managed to stop and marvel at the views. It is not every day that I get to see this wonder.

We reached Camp 2 extension at around 5 in the afternoon. I was dead tired that I wanted to sleep in our tent right away. Travel Factor coordinators prepared our dinner as soon as we get there. They know we were hungry and exhausted.

two friends inside a camping tent

I fell asleep after eating. I woke up in the middle of the night because of my urge to pee. The problem was I am afraid to go out alone. I don’t know where the hell was the latrine. I went out and walked a few meters away from the tents and did what I had to do. Sorry, Mount Pulag. My bladder can only take up 1 liter of urine.

Day 2 (Sea of Clouds and Sunrise at Mt. Pulag)

The summit assault.

There are four major trails up the summit: the Ambangeg, Akiki, Tawangan and the Ambaguio trail (from Nueva Vizcaya). For beginners, the Ambangeg trail is the best option. We got up at around 3 in the morning. This way we will reach the summit in time to witness the famous sunrise and sea of clouds. I was praying hard because I know the weather up there is extremely unpredictable. The month of March is considered as the start of summer but getting a bad weather, and zero visibility are not impossible.

a group of mountaineers

Everything around us was pitch black. The hike was tough, as usual. We hike on rocky, wet, slippery and steep ground. The headlamp was really of great help because your hands will somehow support your balance. I struggled on the first hour. It was extremely cold and dark. I wasn’t able to wear my glasses because I think it will be useless when it gets foggy. My eyesight is poor when it is too dark.

a group of mountaineers in Mt. Pulag

We finally reached the summit after two hours. We could see the sea of clouds and the stars through the dark skies. Unfortunately, an hour had passed but there was no sunrise. It started to rain and I almost cried. We were there, close to heaven, but we did not witness the majestic sunrise and the sea of clouds. The odds were not in our favor.

Descend via Ambangeg Trail

With temperature plunging as low as 5 degrees Celsius,  TF coordinators instructed us to trek down to the campsite. The local tour guide said that the weather looked bad, so we had to leave if we don’t want to freeze to death. I didn’t want to leave yet because I was hoping for the rain to stop. But it didn’t.

We arrived at the camp back from the summit after almost two hours of trekking. Fog was covering the entire area, no sunlight and the temperature was excruciatingly cold. We had breakfast, and we packed our things. At 9 in the morning, we were instructed to break camp. The goal is to LEAVE NO TRACE.

mt pulag tour package 2023

I was disappointed but still grateful to Mt. Pulag. I was inspired by its vastness, grandeur and beauty. Though I did not witness the sunrise and the sea of clouds, this was one of the most memorable moments in my life. At least now I have more reasons to come back. Mt. Pulag, please wait for my revenge climb!
