IHG made big moves in late 2022 in the world of all-inclusive resorts by partnering with Iberostar to add 70 of its beachfront all-inclusive properties to the IHG One Rewards program under a new brand called Iberostar Beachfront Resorts . There are a couple of benefits to using Choice Privileges points to book all-inclusive resorts. First, the price in points is the same for all room categories, so you can book a room with a great view or even a suite at the same price as a basic room . Second, anyone who has a Citi Premier ® Card and/or a Citi Prestige ® Card (no longer available to new applicants) will enjoy a fantastic transfer rate — Citi ThankYou Points transfer to Choice at a 1:2 ratio.

American Express Membership Rewards points and Capital One miles also transfer to Choice but at a less-desirable 1:1 ratio.

Choice Hotels offers 11 all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Dominica. You can easily search for a resort by selecting All-Inclusive Resorts in the search filtering options on Choice’s website .

There’s 1 more all-inclusive resort you can book with Choice Privileges points. Radisson Blu Punta Cana, an All-Inclusive Resort , is part of the Radisson Rewards Americas program which was acquired by Choice in 2022 . While each loyalty program is still separate (they will be integrated later in 2023), you can transfer points between them at a rate of 1 Choice Privileges point to 2 Radisson Rewards Americas points .

Bottom Line: There are 11 Choice Hotels all-inclusive resorts plus an additional Radisson Hotels Americas all-inclusive location that you can book with points, but the availability (even when paying cash) is poor.

When it comes to all-inclusive resorts, not all hotels are created equally. All-inclusive resorts can differ in the amenities that they offer on a complementary basis and the quality of those offerings can vary drastically. In this article, I’ll explain to you what exactly is meant by an all-inclusive resort and the types of things you can expect to receive for free.

What does “all-inclusive” mean at a resort?

All inclusive at a resort usually means that all or most of your food and beverages are included with the cost of your hotel stay but it could mean even more than that.  Some properties might even include other expenses such as tips, taxes, and even some activities and excursions.

On the other hand, not all your meals are guaranteed to be included in an all-inclusive package, especially at higher-end restaurants. Additionally, there’s a possibility that you might have to pay extra for premium-level drinks or access to lounges offering those premium alcoholic beverages.

Below, I will go through all of the different types of expenses you might expect to get covered at an all-inclusive resort and give you some insight based on my personal experiences with all-inclusive resorts.

What will you receive at an all-inclusive resort?

When staying at all inclusive resorts these are the things you can expect.

All-inclusive resort dining options: what to expect

Many all-inclusive resorts have a diverse line-up of different types of restaurants to choose from. Usually, at resorts like the Hyatt Ziva in Los Cabos there are a range of restaurants that specialize in different types of cuisine such as:

And then there are some restaurants that serve American-style food and just a little bit of everything. 

You can usually find one or two upscale restaurants that require a dress code so that is one reason why you should bring nice clothes even if you are heading to destinations like the Caribbean ( I’ve made the mistake before ) .

Sometimes these upscale restaurants are not part of the all-inclusive package and you may have to pay out-of-pocket for them. Some restaurants might even be located off the property (and therefore open to the public). 

Also, it’s very common to need reservations to eat at these places. Reservations can go quickly at some of these places so I’d call ahead of time to make sure that you’re in the clear before you ever arrive at the hotel. 

There will probably be a couple of smaller restaurants/stands that are located by or at the pool that serve up some snacks. At these places you can find items like pizza, burgers, nachos, etc. Also, you might come across some healthy eating establishments which might serve items like smoothies. 

Coffee shops are also very common to find along with delis.

It’s really nice whenever you can take advantage of local cuisine in the all-inclusive resort like when we were served up jerk chicken in Jamaica , but my biggest drawback to all-inclusive resorts is that it feels like you’re missing out on the local culture.

When everything is free, it’s hard to venture out into the nearby towns and cities to spend money to try out different restaurants and that’s my biggest problem with all-inclusive resorts.

How is the food quality?

It’s not uncommon for all-inclusive resorts to offer mediocre dining at most of the restaurants at the hotel.

In my experience, there is usually only one or two restaurants that I thoroughly enjoy at all-inclusive resorts and all of the other ones are for the most part mediocre.

(Note: True upscale/luxury all-inclusive resorts may have a much better all-around selection of gourmet foods .) 

Many all-inclusive resorts offer buffet restaurants which are usually pretty solid for breakfast. At these you can put together the breakfast of your dreams each morning and start your day off right. 

For other meals such as dinner, buffet restaurants can be a little less memorable.

One key to getting the most out of these buffets is to take advantage of items you can get cooked up for you on the grill or special pasta dishes you can get made. Just look for the stations with the cooks/chefs behind them — that’s usually where the good stuff is.  

At some all-inclusive resort restaurants you might have to pay extra for some of the premium dishes, such as lobster. The extra amount that you have to pay might be something like $20. If you have a hotel elite status with that hotel program they might provide you with credits for certain purchases.

For example, when we recently stayed at the Hilton Playa del Carmen we were issued several different types of credits that we could utilize at the restaurants.  

The drink quality 

When you are staying at an all inclusive resort it usually means that you will have unlimited booze for the duration of your stay. This is the main reason that many people choose all-inclusive resorts in the first place.  

While most drinks should be free, sometimes you might have to pay extra for premium wines and champagne. 

One thing that all inclusive resorts are known for are weak drinks.

So if you really want to work up a good buzz then you should request extra alcohol in your drinks. Also, if you throw your bartender a buck for your tip they will usually take care of you at the bar.  Read more about tipping at all-inclusive resorts here.

Alcohol in the room

Some hotels will provide you with beer, wine, and miniature liquor bottles in your mini-fridge and replenish those on a daily basis.

Other hotels may only provide you with drinks like beer and soda and will require you to order liquor via room service (they will just serve you “shots” of liquor).

If you have status or are staying in a premium suite, the hotel may offer you more premium liquor or champagne.

Typically, you can order alcohol 24/7 around-the-clock.

Room service

One area where all-inclusive resorts have really slacked in my experience is when ordering room service. At first glance, the deal sounds too good to be true — unlimited room service on a complimentary basis?

Unfortunately, the room service food is often a step down from what the restaurants offer in terms of the options and quality. This isn’t always the case, but I’ve been to resorts that seem to serve up their most basic offerings for in-room dining and it’s just not very impressive. 

For that reason, I try to avoid relying on room service at all-inclusive resorts.

Lots of resorts put on daily activities like learning how to make a lei, going on a history walk, or sunrise yoga. These type of activities are usually included in the price.

Most all-inclusive resorts will not include your excursions but it all just depends. If you want to do some type of motorized water sports such as waterskiing, parasailing, or anything out on a boat you will typically have to pay for that.

The good thing is that there is usually some type of office at the hotel that you can book all of your tours and activities through which is very convenient. The bad news is that those tours are not always going to be the cheapest so you need to compare prices.

But some resorts like The Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa   will offer you some activities included with your all inclusive package booking. There, you could book excursions like going on hikes, ATVs, horseback riding, and several others.

Other hotels may offer a romantic getaway package. I’ve seen couple packages with excursions like a sunset dinner cruise.

Spa treatment

Spa treatment is usually not included in an all inclusive package. Some hotels may offer special packages where you can receive spa treatment but it is not the standard.

At those resorts that do offer spa treatment you might get something like one hour long treatment allowed per day or you might just be limited to an introductory massage treatment.

The quality of the spa can vary greatly. Some resorts might be known for their spas while others have some less memorable spa treatments to offer. Make sure you do look at reviews of the spa online before you shell out a lot of money. 

Cabanas and daybeds by the pool

If you are staying at an all inclusive resort with a nice pool then you will have a few different options to choose from for lounging around the pool.

There should be plenty of rows of free spots for you to lounge on but there also will typically be daybeds and cabanas that you can rent. The cabanas are typically not included in a package unless you book a specific type of room or suite then they may be a part of that package. Other times, you may be offered a discount or priority based on your room.

Tip: The best chairs by the pool get taken very early at a lot of hotels. Sometimes you may need to wake up before sunrise and run down to the pool to put something on the chair to reserve it. I have seen people use items such as books, t-shirts, and towels — it all just depends on what you have and what you are comfortable with.

Entertainment

All-inclusive resorts are known for offering daily and nightly entertainment. I’ve seen everything from a Michael Jackson show, a comedy bit, a magic show, and a movie night under the stars.

These special events are usually free for all guests so they are included in your all-inclusive package. 

Items in the gift shop will virtually never be complementary or included in your package. In fact, gift shops at all-inclusive resorts are notoriously overpriced so be weary about purchasing anything like a bathing suit or sunscreen from those.

Airport transport

Many all-inclusive resorts will offer you complementary transportation to and from the airport. It is not uncommon for them to have a shuttle or large van that scoops up guests at the airport and takes them directly to the resort free of charge. This can be an easy way to save around $50 or $100 depending on where you are.

As you can tell, the all-inclusive resort experience can be very different depending on which resort you choose to stay at. You should typically always get your free food and beverages but when it comes to things like activities, spa treatment, and other special features that is going to depend on the property.

In the past, many believe that all-inclusive resorts were at a disadvantage because of the inability to upsell and generate additional revenue. But the expectations of travelers today have increased and changed. Guests are more willing to splurge on exclusive excursions, activities, and luxury services beyond their all-inclusive package. They want to venture offsite and explore their surroundings, and they’re willing to pay extra for it.

“Today's all-inclusive guests are more than willing to make spontaneous travel purchase decisions for customized regional experiences and top-tier ancillaries,” wrote Dan Skodol , vice president of data science and analytics for Cendyn, in a Hospitality Net article.

This “resort-within-a-resort” concept — where guests who book an all-inclusive package are willing to pay more for deluxe accommodations and exclusive access to special luxury amenities — is a way to upgrade an all-inclusive experience and gain more revenue.

Everything is taken care of for you so you can simply focus on doing very little: You don’t even have to decide what time to eat breakfast; you simply have to show up when invited.

However, this isn’t everyone’s idea of the perfect vacation. Some would rather spend their vacation navigating newly discovered streets, map in hand, approaching anyone in sight, and generally immersing themselves in every aspect of the local culture, regardless of how exhausting it may seem (to them it’s not!).

Who else is coming along?

Another factor to consider is your traveling companion(s). If it’s just you and your partner taking the trip, and you’ve enjoyed vacations together in the past, then you will have a good idea of how the two of you will want to spend your time. However, if you’re traveling with a group of people and think you might appreciate some space during the trip, then again, this is something to think about. Will you be able to spend time alone if you want to (or need to!)?

Will you be taking children with you on vacation? If so, then you might very much appreciate an all-inclusive vacation. Most resorts cater to families in some way shape or form. There will probably be an abundance of entertainment for the kids, and you can rest assured that they are being looked after by professionals employed to do just that. Be sure to ask the resort or your travel advisor ahead of time as to what is offered for the kids.

If you’re still unsure, it might be possible to combine an all-inclusive vacation with a few days of comparative independent travel. For example, some travel companies will provide a few days in a city for travelers to do their own thing, and then arrange travel for them to an all-inclusive resort for the remainder of their stay.

On the plus side, with an all-inclusive vacation, all travel is usually arranged for you, which means that once you arrive at your destination airport, all forward and return travel will be arranged for you. This can be hugely helpful if you’re visiting a country where public transportation is limited or notoriously difficult to access.

What’s my overall travel budget?

As for cost, don’t assume that everything advertised on an all-inclusive deal is included. It could be that you will need to pay extra for certain water sports or more specialized excursions. This is another question that should be asked directly with your travel provider.

Am I ok with the food and drink that will be provided?

And last, but certainly not least, what about food and wine? If staying at an all-inclusive resort, the cuisine will almost certainly be plentiful, but it also may be a little generic; for example, to cater for the masses, the hotel won’t be able to offer those specialties you would perhaps be able to get off the beaten track. But you certainly won’t go hungry – and food and drink will likely be available round the clock.

If you’re a foodie, definitely ask the resort or your travel provider what the menu will look like during the duration of your trip. If your vacation includes advanced bookings at a variety of restaurants or bars, be sure to ask exactly what those are and check the menu, and reviews, ahead of time. This is especially important for those with dietary restrictions.

Should I book an all-inclusive trip?

So, as you can see, there are several factors to consider when deciding whether an all-inclusive vacation is right for you. Think about how you want to spend your time away, and what memories you want to create while you’re there. And whether you decide to go all-inclusive or independently, you will leave knowing that you’ve done your research, which should go some way to ensuring you have a great trip!

What do ‘all-inclusive’ vacations really include?

You’ve seen the ads, read the brochures for the hotels, cruises and vacation packages — all billed as “all-inclusives.” But the term ”all-inclusive” has become confusing, and — some would argue — misleading. Does an all-inclusive trip really mean it includes all costs, and is it really an affordable alternative to an a la carte vacation? After all, few of us really like going to our wallets and purses every five minutes when we travel. Most of us would presumably like to pay one fee that covers all of our costs when we travel. But does it ever work out that way? First, some history. For most of us, the term “all-inclusive” began in 1950 with Club Med, which claims to have invented the vacation package. The first Club Med village was on the Spanish island of Mallorca. where the all-inclusive vacation on a remote island was quite an adventure.

The first enthusiastic supporters were single people looking for something different and fun and where they could meet other like-minded individuals … and travelers even helped to wash dishes! But the concept was a simple one: Pay one fee, one time, and your vacation package was covered: airfare, your accommodations, your meals, your drinks and all your activities. Remember the famous Club Med “beads”? Members wore them around their necks as continually shrinking necklaces, which soon turned into bracelets as beads were removed to pay for drinks.

Club Med: Today, the all-inclusive approach continues at Club Med, where many of their locations have gone from a singles-only experience to appealing to families. For example, at the Club Med Cancun Yucatan, the prices for a seven-night “all-inclusive” vacation at Club Med Cancun Yucatan start at $1,400 per person. On the surface, that’s definitely affordable. What's included:

• Accommodation
• All meals, plus wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner
• Open bar and snacks served at specific times during the day and night — alcoholic beverages
• Sports activities with provision of equipment and/or tuition for beginners and/or advanced by qualified instructors, and include kayaking, snorkeling, golf, tennis, archery, flying trapeze, volleyball, dance, water aerobics, swimming, accompanied hikes

All-inclusive, right? Not necessarily. Here’s what your Club Med vacation in 2008 doesn't include:

• Champagne, VSOP and XO spirits, some premium brands, select wines and canned/bottled drinks
• Sports tuition and special courses (scuba diving, horse-riding, tennis, etc.) and green fees. Scuba diving at Club Med Cancun Yucatan is $129 for one tank, and $189 for two tanks
• Baby Club Med for babies from 4 to 23 months old. Baby Club Med for a week is anywhere from $300-$390
• Petit Club Med for children from 2 to 3 years old
• Club Med spa packages

But there is some good news: In Europe, at the Club Med Opio en Provence prices start at $883 per week. But in response to the record-high euro-to-dollar exchange rate ($1.56), Club Med has just announced a fixed $1.35 to 1 euro exchange rate at all European properties through 2008. That relates to anything purchased on the property (souvenirs in the gift shop, spa treatments, excursions, etc.).

Sandals: In recent years, the all-inclusive vacation package has exploded throughout the Caribbean. For example, there’s Sandals: Here are some price examples: Sandals Montego Bay between now and April 10, $330 per person/per night; between April 11 and December 31, $309. Sandals Royal Caribbean: between now and April 10, $338 per person/per night; from April 11-December 31, $307. Sandals Grande Ocho Rios, The Manor: now through April 10, $348; April 11-December 31, $338. Sandals Inn: now through April 10, $268; April 11 through December 31, $247. What's included:

• Overnight accommodations
• Breakfast buffet, lunch and dinner at any of 11 restaurants per resort (restaurant examples at Montego Bay include Bayside Restaurant, casual indoor/outdoor; Oleander Room, Jamaican restaurant, requires evening attire; Cucina Romana, casual Italian; Tokyo Joe’s Japanese, over the water; and OK Corral, beach grill by day and Tex-Mex by night.
• Premium brand alcohol
• Scuba diving for certified divers and other water sports
• Golf (Jamaica/St. Lucia only)
• Hotel taxes, tipping and gratuities, airport transfers
• Butler Service in top-category suites
• Basic wedding packages (includes wedding consultant, location, documentation, one 5x7 photo, a cake, officiant, sparkling wine and hors d’oeuvres, breakfast in bed, bouquet and boutonnière)
• Unlimited use of all amenities and exchange privileges between resorts (free shuttle in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay)

What's not included:

• Red Lane spa treatments (sample prices: $120/50-minute massage,  $110/50-minute facial)
• Non-basic wedding packages (sample prices: Bride’s personal dressing assistant, $75; private car transfers to/from airport, $50 each way: rehearsal dinner, $75 per guest)
• Private canape cruise (newlyweds and 4 guests), $750
• Off-property tours and excursions (sample price at Montego Bay: Black River Safari/Y.S. Falls, $83/per person; Chukka ATV Safari, $72; Chukka Kayak Tour, $100)
• Scuba diving for noncertified divers, $70

In Mexico, there's Karisma Resorts (El Dorado Royale, A Spa Resort, Riviera Maya): Rates range from $160-$367 including the “Gourmet Inclusive” experience with full concierge and 24-hour room service (per night, per person, including taxes and service fees).   What's included:

• Accommodations
• Welcome glass of champagne
• All meals and Gourmet Bites. Options include a fondue restaurant, a restaurant featuring “culinary theater” — dishes prepared in one of five open kitchens, and 24-hour room service. All seven Gourmet Inclusive restaurants have full a la carte service.
• Unlimited local and selection of international premium brands. Alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages.
• Minibar with beer, water, soft drinks refilled once a day.
• Daily and nightly activity program.
• Bicycles provided to ride around the premises.
• Nonmotorized water sports: paddleboats, kayak and snorkeling gear.
• Scuba clinics in the pool. 13 swimming pools, one of which is a natural saltwater pool.
• Two hard-surface lighted tennis courts. Rackets and balls provided free of charge. Restrictions apply at night.
• Taxes and gratuities included.
• Live music and shows.
• Shopping tours to Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Reservation required.

Tamarijn Aruba (all-inclusive family package): Between April 1 and April 18, rates start at $388, per room, per night. Kids up to 18 are free, so that means you can have four people a night at this rate. (Essentially all-inclusive here means it includes two kids as well.) What's included:

• Overnight accommodations for two adults and two children up to 18.
• All meals and snacks — restaurants include buffet at Pelican Terrace Restaurant; Red Parrot Oceanfront Restaurant, a la carte; Coco Grill & Bar, open-air snack bar; Cunucu Terrace Oceanfront Restaurant, buffet; Ginger, fine dining/Asian restaurant; Palm Grill Oceanfront Restaurant, a la carte; Paparazzi, Italian restaurant; Window on Aruba at Divi Aruba, fine dining.
• Beverages at eight bars, including alcohol (beer, wine and any liquor that’s available at the resort — these won’t be top-shelf, but include brand names).
• Tamarijn Aruba and Divi Aruba facilities — activities include T-shirt painting, face painting, arts and crafts, basketball, movies, pool games, beach games, bingo, scavenger hunt, snorkel clinic, tennis clinic, soccer tournament, snacks and more.

Shorter stays, of less than seven nights, qualify for a $250 spa credit as well as the cruise. What's included:

• Overnight accommodations in a beachfront junior suite
• All meals including a Japanese, Italian, French fine dining and Jamaican grill café, pool grill, dessert café, and premium-brand cocktails, wine at lunch and dinner
• 24-hour gourmet room service
• Land and water sports, including instruction and equipment rental; recreational activities
• One complimentary pedicure and manicure

This includes one child stays free and a second child 3 to 16 years old pays $54 (kids under 3 free). What's included:

• Accommodations in a Queen Superior room
• Three meals and afternoon tea, beer, wine and house drinks at five restaurants and five bars

Riviera Maya (Occidental Grand Xcaret): Family Escape package: Rates start at $114 for adults and $60 for children (ages 3-12) for travel between May 1 and August 31, 2008. What's included:

• Unlimited meals at 10 bars and 11 restaurants, snacks, premium alcohol, juice and soft drinks
• Supervised activities, sports, SCUBA classes, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, sports pool, volleyball, beach soccer, Ping-Pong, darts, tennis, basketball, horseback riding, and merengue, bachata and salsa classes, yoga, aerobics.
• Daily entertainment and activities programs for children and adults are also part of the package as well as nightly shows and live entertainment.
• One complimentary day pass to Xcaret Park (valued at over $185 for a family of four).
• Use of the on-site gym, sauna, whirlpool, steam room
• Spa services (beauty salon, massages, treatments)
• Car and scooter rental
• Excursions to: Tulum, Xel Ha, Chichen Itza and nearby attractions
• Golf course nearby
• Business and meeting center
• Wedding and honeymoon programs
• 24 hour medical attention
• Currency exchange

Alternatives to traditional all-inclusives There are a number of different vacation options that are now considered all-inclusives. This includes culinary vacations and spas.

Tuscan Way at Casa Innocenti (culinary option): Wine tour around Tuscany with master chef Carlo Innocenti at La Locanda del Prete for 1/2 week (3 nights/4 days): $1,280 at current exchange rate. One-week wine tour (10 wine tastings) with sommelier Romeo Innocenti at La Locanda del Prete: $2,880 at current exchange rate. Book now and get 10 percent off: $1,152 for 1/2 week at La Locanda del Prete, $2,592 for one-week wine tour What's included:

• Six nights accommodations at Casa Innocenti, a medieval house, the highest of the village, next to the village Castle (12th century A.D.). 45 minutes from Siena, two hours from Florence
• All meals and wine, including local wine tasting in Montalcino
• Four hands-on cooking courses in Tuscan country cooking from master chef Carlo Innocenti, with wine included
• Five guided excursions to nearby villages of Monte Amiata, the Etruscan sites of Pitigliano, Sorano, Sovana, the soothing springs of Saturnia, the village of Montalcino (famous for its Brunello wine), and the Renaissance town of Pienza
• 4-night and 5-night tours begin on “Day 1,” which is a Sunday. On the last day, departure is after breakfast.

Rancho La Puerta: Weeklong packages start at $2,795. Although this upscale resort claims to be all-inclusive, its central feature of a cooking school (La Cocina Que Canta) is NOT included. What's included:

• All gourmet, organic meals (no alcohol)
• 50+ different classes each week: cardio, yoga, Pilates, tai chi, dance, and many other traditional strength, stamina and flexibility disciplines
• Through the month of August, intensive yoga ashram/Eastern spiritual study will be included.
• Spa treatments (sample prices: facial $85/50 minutes, massage $50/35 minutes)
• Personal training sessions
• Cooking classes at La Cocina Que Canta — hands-on classes, $75 per person for 3.5 hours. Demonstration classes, $35 for 2.5 hours

Mohonk Mountain House, N.Y.: Midweek “Spa-tacular” vacation package starts at $308 per person, per night. Available through June 27, 2008. Year-round getaway package available Sunday through Thursday nights through March 2009. Rates begin at $240 per person, per night, based on double occupancy. What's included:

• Three meals daily prepared by award-winning chefs
• Afternoon tea and cookies, served daily from 4 – 5 p.m.
• Indoor heated pool, fitness center/classes, yoga/meditation, guided hikes, tennis, mid-week golf, lake swimming, boating, ice skating, X-country skiing, snowshoeing
• Children and teen programs
• Spa services (sample price: hot stone massage, $125/65 minutes, facial, $140/70 minutes)
• Rock climbing (starts at $223  per person for a half-day and $324.00 for a full day)
• Weekend golf: Day visitors and overnight guests pay $24 for 9 holes and $29 for 18 holes
• Caving, horseback riding, carriage rides, mountain biking, fly-fishing

Deerfield Spa, Poconos, Pa.: Two nights (minimum stay), from $360 to 595. Mini-Week (5 nights, Sun-Fri): from $800 to $1,275. Weekly (7 nights, 8 days): from $850 to $1,420. All weekly stays include one free $70 massage. All mini-week stays include $150 worth of personal services. What's included:

• Unlimited exercise classes (Pilates, yoga, aerobics, dance, tai chi), two gyms, outdoor heated pool, hiking on the Appalachian Trail
• Three meals a day plus two snacks
• Evening activities: line dancing, belly dancing, step, evening yoga, evening Pilates, bingo, Texas Hold 'Em
• Free massage if you stay a week
• Includes 17 percent surcharge, so no tipping allowed
• Special programs throughout the season, including cooking classes, nutritional and health expert consultations, dance week, fall foliage hiking
• All facilities are open 24/7 at Deerfield, including its heated (to 84 degrees) outdoor pool, outdoor hot tub, sauna, gyms, outdoor sport court and living rooms
• Spa services (massage: $70/50 minutes, facial: $110/50 minutes)
• Airfare and transfers
• This is not a place to go for alcohol. It’s all low-cal, healthy cuisine.

Via Rail Canada: Even some train trips can be considered all-inclusive: Consider this three-day trip between Toronto and Vancouver (or vice versa), stopping in the resort town of Jasper in Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies. Includes meals and sleeping car. For travel through May 31, a double bedroom for the three-night journey in either direction with one stopover in Jasper is about $1,211 per person plus tax, when purchased at least five days in advance. This represents a savings of 37 percent for regular fares.

• For passengers traveling in premier Silver & Blue Class, the ticket is all-inclusive — breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the ticket price
• Sleeping compartments with down duvet bedding, bedding and shower access
• With the three-day trip, you can choose to either go the whole way in our fell swoop, or break the trip up — VIA Rail does not charge extra for getting off at one stop along the way and getting on one of the next trains that comes through.
• Alcoholic beverages, which includes fine wines and regional beers

And then, the subject of cruises. Historically, a cruise was always considered “all-inclusive.” For the price of your cabin, you got all your meals, all your activities on board, your entertainment etc. Not anymore ...

Yes, if you restrain yourself and have only water with every seated meal on your ship, then it’s possible to still make the argument that cruises are all inclusive ... but these days, other than scheduled meals and some entertainment, just about everything on a cruise ship is a revenue center for the cruise line — the bar (yes, even soft drinks), the signature restaurants, the ice cream, the activities on board, and ,of course, let’s not forget the spa, the shore excursions ... for example: Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas An “all-inclusive” eastern Caribbean cruise (Miami; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Miami, Florida) can start at $599 per person (for an inside room). What's included:

• Meals (buffet and dining room)
• Nightly entertainment, pools
• Beverages, including soft drinks, bottled water and alcohol
• Spa services
• Shore excursions
• Tipping your waiter, head waiter, dining room steward, bus boy, table captain, cabin steward, butler, maid, pool boy
• Dining beyond the dining room or buffet
• Johnny Rockets '50s-style restaurant, $3.95 per person. Portofino Italian Restaurant, $20 - $25 per person (including tip). Chops Grille, $25 per person. Ben & Jerry’s, pay per ice cream

Here’s the bottom line to protect yourself before you decide to take an “all-inclusive” vacation: 1. Watch out for the dreaded asterisk. And there’s almost always going to be one. The asterisk should tell you what’s NOT included in your deal. 2. But don’t depend on the asterisk to practice full disclosure. Call ahead and arrive at a mutually agreeable definition of terms from the travel provider as to what they will and will not include.

3. You can sometimes negotiate your own definition of all-inclusive. It’s called bundling, and this often works at resorts ... for example, instead of going to your wallet every time you make a phone call, use the Internet. You can ask the resort/hotel to bundle the charges into a one- time fee (many times broken down as a daily charge) for unlimited local and domestic long-distance charges as well as Internet and WiFi. A number of hotels and resorts do this for about $10 a day. Sure beats $18 a day for Internet, $1 per local call, $1 per 800 number call and all those long-distance phone charges.

Believe me — at $1.50 per drink plus mandatory tip in some cases, the charges add up on a cruise for Diet Coke! 4. Last but never least, if you are on an all-inclusive vacation and the travel provider did not disclose the charges that are NOT included ahead of time, you have rights. You can dispute the bill, either directly with the travel provider or with your credit card. But the key — as always — is to be responsible enough to demand to know the NOT INCLUDED charges and services before you ever make the decision to do an “all-inclusive” vacation.

The specifics of each package can vary depending on the resort, but the main idea is that you won’t have to worry about any additional expenses once you arrive at your destination.

If you book a package holiday, this can include an all-inclusive hotel, transfers, and flights.

Why Choose an All-Inclusive Trip?

One of the biggest benefits of an all-inclusive vacation is the convenience factor. Everything is taken care of for you, so you can relax and enjoy your trip rather than worrying about planning meals or activities. This especially appeals to families or groups, as coordinating meals and activities can be a hassle.

Another benefit of all-inclusive vacations is that they offer excellent value for your money. By bundling everything together, you can often save money compared to booking each component of your vacation separately. Plus, you can budget more easily since you know the total cost upfront.

Are All Inclusive Resorts Worth it?

Whether an all-inclusive resort is worth it or not depends on personal preferences and travel style. Sometimes all-inclusive packages include deals where kids go free and under 2’s are almost always free. This can save you even more money!

However, if you would prefer to explore and experience the local culture may find that all-inclusive resorts can be too insular and disconnected from the local community.

Some all-inclusive resorts may be too crowded and noisy or offer limited options for dining or activities. Regarding the cost of all-inclusive packages, they are often higher than if you were to book their accommodation and activities separately. Another option which I sometimes do is to book the all-inclusive hotel on Booking.com and then organise transfers and flights myself.

What’s Included in an All-Inclusive Package?

As mentioned, all-inclusive packages typically include accommodations, meals, drinks, and activities. Depending on the resort, accommodations can range from hotel rooms to private villas. Meals are usually served at on-site restaurants, including buffets, à la carte dining, and snacks throughout the day.

Drinks are also included and can range from non-alcoholic beverages to alcoholic drinks like beer, wine, and cocktails. Some resorts may have restrictions on which drinks are included, so it’s important to read the fine print.

Activities can vary widely depending on the resort and location. Some all-inclusive resorts offer water sports like snorkelling and kayaking, while others may have golf courses or spa treatments included in the package.

Cruises can also be all-inclusive. You will get flights and transfers plus unlimited food on the ship. Some cruises also have some excursions in the price, but you can almost always participate in things going on on the ship for free such as movie nights, shows and kids clubs.

Going ‘All Inclusive’ as a Family

All-inclusive holidays can be an excellent choice for families, as they offer a wide range of activities and amenities that cater to both children and adults. 

Many all-inclusive resorts have kid’s clubs and activities, allowing parents to relax while their children are entertained. Plus, with meals included, families don’t have to worry about the hassle of finding kid-friendly restaurants or dealing with picky eaters.

All Inclusive Vs Half Board

There is a big difference between all inclusive and half-board. Half board typically means you will get 2 meals a day (breakfast and dinner). Some resorts will also let you swap dinner for lunch. Drinks are not usually included in half-board packages, but at some resorts they are. All-inclusive means everything is included, including 3 meals a day, snacks and drinks.

Sometimes at resorts, you can choose what board breakfast you have from bed and breakfast to half board to full board and all inclusive.

All-Inclusive Vs Full Board

All inclusive and full board are different. Full board means you will be treated to 3 meals each day. This doesn’t normally include drinks but at some hotels and resorts it does. All inclusive means you will also get drinks and snacks throughout the day and at meal times.

All Inclusive City Breaks in Europe

All-inclusive city breaks in Europe are hard to come by unless it’s a city by the sea. All-inclusive City breaks to these coastal cities in Spain are common. With a city break, you’re more likely to get a package holiday including flights, transfers, a hotel and breakfast. EasyJet Holidays is my go-to for this and Tui has just started Tui city breaks!

Best All-Inclusive Holiday Companies in Europe for Families

TUI is a well-known travel company that offers a wide range of all-inclusive vacations across Europe.

The Pros and Cons of All-Inclusive Resorts

Let’s be honest: all-inclusive resorts can be a bit polarizing. Some love them and return year after year (or dream about it); some find the entire idea of such a packaged vacation abhorrent. It’s true that there are a lot of pros and cons to all-inclusive resorts, and it can be hard to decide whether the experience they offer is worth your hard-earned money and precious vacation time.

For those who are unfamiliar, an all-inclusive resort is one where the vast majority of your expenses – accommodations, food and drink (including alcohol), some activities, and more – are all included in the price of your vacation. While off-property excursions, some top-shelf liquors, spa treatments, and other special exceptions may apply, for the most part, you pay one per-night price and don’t have to worry about taking out your credit card for the rest of the trip. All-inclusive resorts are often located in tropical destinations, most commonly in the Caribbean and Mexico, but can be found across the world.

As I’ve shared before , for a long time, this kind of vacation didn’t hold much appeal for me. I looked at the pros and cons of all-inclusive resorts and saw mostly cons, plus they didn’t fit my vision of myself as a traveler , not a tourist . (Ugh, early 20’s me was a travel snob .) My perspective changed, however, when M and I decided to spend a long weekend at an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic to celebrate my 30th birthday. I won’t say that I was fully converted into an all-inclusive resort fangirl – the following list of pros and cons is very honest and based on my own experience there and elsewhere – but I definitely came to understand the value and appeal of indulging in this sort of vacation.

If you’re considering traveling to an all-inclusive resort, check out the list below to see if it’s the right choice for you. I hope these points will help you visit the tropics in the best way possible!

PRO: They’re beautiful and feel like the epitome of taking a vacation.

This is probably one of the most attractive qualities of all-inclusive resorts. They’re designed to feel like paradise, and most of them succeed to at least some degree. Most Caribbean all-inclusives are filled with some combination of swaying palm trees, lush green vegetation, bright tropical decor, picturesque beaches, and lovely pool areas. They want you to feel like you’ve stepped off the plane and into a dream, one where the stresses of home melt away as you’re surrounded by everything that a tropical beach is supposed to be.

We certainly felt that on our island getaway in Punta Cana. Everything, from our room to the beach to the common areas and restaurants, was beautiful and beautifully decorated. It felt special and romantic and exotic, which was just what we were looking for. It’s hard to feel glum in a place that’s designed to emulate paradise.

CON: The food often isn’t great.

On the other hand, one of the biggest complaints against all-inclusive resorts is that the food is often just so-so. Because everything is included, there’s no higher price tag for higher-quality menu items like you’d find in a restaurant. Thus, there’s not really much incentive to make any particular dish – or the food offerings in general – stand out.

(To be fair, some people have the same complaint about the food on cruise ships. It may depend on the cruise line and your own personal tastes, but personally I have found that cruise food far surpasses the food at all-inclusive resorts.)

While we couldn’t complain much because it was included in the price of our room, the quality of the food was one of M’s and my few disappointments on our trip. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t really wow us or have much flavor. It was simply fine .

PRO: All-inclusive resorts can be a cost-effective way to vacation.

One of the great things about booking a stay at an all-inclusive resort is that you have a near-complete vision of your vacation’s cost before you even step on the plane. When so many of your major expenses – lodging, food, activities, and often even airfare – are already paid for, the chances of you exceeding your vacation budget or encountering a surprise major expense are low. Sure, you might spring for a massage or book a jet-skiing adventure, but for the most part, you don’t have to worry about fitting a bunch of variables into a budget over the course of your trip.

Depending on the island, kind of resort, and time of year, all-inclusive resorts can also be very economical. It’s not unusual to see prices lower than $150 per person per night, which is a pretty good deal when you consider that that includes all food, alcohol, activities, and your room. (That means a couple could take a week-long vacation for just over $2,000, excluding airfare.) Granted, you can always pay a little more for a better room, better amenities, a better resort, or a more upscale island/location, but it’s nice to know that you can book a tropical vacation and not break the bank.

CON: It’s not easy to authentically experience much local culture.

If you’re looking to immerse yourself in a local culture, learn more about another country, or practice your language skills, an all-inclusive resort may not be for you. These places are designed to be a world unto themselves, and plenty of people who visit them don’t set foot off the property for the duration of their stay. Honestly, there aren’t many reasons why you would need to leave apart from going on an excursion or just wanting a change of scenery.

In addition, most of the guest-facing staff speak English by default because of the international (and largely American) clientele. Signs are in English, there are a lot of familiar food options, and you can usually pay for souvenirs and other incidentals with American dollars. At many resorts, it can feel like you’re just visiting another part of America that happens to have palm trees and a few splashes of local color or patterns in the decor.

On my 30th birthday trip, M and I were surprised to see that the lack of local culture extended to the food offerings. We knew that the resort would probably be pretty insular, but I figured there would at least be plenty of Caribbean fare. (Your girl could live on beans, rice, and roasted pork.) Imagine my surprise when we arrived to find that the restaurants on site were Italian, French, hibachi/Asian fusion, and Mexican. Aside from a few dishes at the all-day buffet, the rest of the food had nothing to do with the place we were visiting.

PRO: All-inclusive resorts are a low-stress way to vacation.

If you’re looking to escape the stresses of daily life, there’s not much better than jetting off to a place where you don’t really have to think about anything. You can sit back, relax, grab a drink, and enjoy the beautiful scenery without carrying a wallet or having any responsibilities. At an all-inclusive resort, everything is taken care of for you, making it easy to just relax.

It’s very freeing not to have to carry a purse or a wallet, make a reservation for dinner, or worry about traveling from one place to another on a jam-packed itinerary. Really, all you have to do is figure out whether your next hour will be spent by the pool, on the beach, grabbing food, or doing an activity. Even people traveling with their kids can find some moments of bliss, as lots of resorts offer childcare and children’s programming to give parents a break.

M and I spent hours reading on the sand, taking romantic walks along the water, and popping into restaurants when we felt peckish. The only stress I felt all weekend was when I looked at a restaurant menu and tried to figure out what to order… though M will tell you that that’s pretty much par for the course with me.

CON: They might not be a good fit for adventure travelers or non-drinkers.

Although staying at an all-inclusive resort can provide a nice respite, adventure travelers and those who like to be on the go may find themselves getting bored after a couple of days. As I’ve said, relaxation is the name of the game, and while resorts offer optional excursions and other activities, they’re not usually bursting with new experiences and exciting things to do.

Upon our return from the Dominican Republic, M and I agreed that a long weekend was the maximum amount of time that we would personally want to spend at an all-inclusive resort. Despite our intentions to take it easy, we didn’t even make it through the first full day without feeling the itch to explore. Happily, our long walk along the shoreline led us to a deserted section of beach with beautiful water, and returning there before dawn to watch the sunrise on our last day ended up being one of my favorite memories from the trip. We appreciated the opportunity to relax and did our best to stick to that plan, but spending any longer in one place without much to do would have had us going a bit stir-crazy.

Additionally, part of the appeal of an all-inclusive resort is that you can drink as much alcohol as you want at no additional charge (with the occasional rare exception for very expensive liquors). You don’t need to be a heavy drinker (or drink alcohol at all) to enjoy an all-inclusive resort, but you may not end up saving much money compared to just staying somewhere where everything is a la carte. The free-flowing booze can also result in quite the party atmosphere on some resorts, so make sure to check reviews of the places you’re considering if that’s not your scene.

PRO: They’re good for families and groups.

Just like cruises , all-inclusive resorts can be a great fit if you’re looking to travel with extended family, multiple couples, or another big group. Staying together at a resort gives everyone the freedom to have fun within the same confined space, meaning that you can spend as much or as little time together as you want and easily regroup when needed.

Also, because rooms come at different price points and configurations, all-inclusive resorts can accommodate a variety of budgets and group dynamics. Families can take advantage of the childcare options mentioned above, and there are activities available to suit a variety of interests. Finally, staying together in one place means that you don’t have to worry about transporting a big group from one destination to another, with the exception of the airport. (And even that can usually be easily arranged through the resort.)

CON: All-inclusive resorts may have a significant negative impact on the local community.

A final, major downside of booking an all-inclusive resort vacation is that the money you spend there may not be doing much good for the local community. In fact, you may even be adversely affecting it.

All-inclusive resorts have come under fire for everything from poor working conditions for local staff through low wages and short-term contracts to negatively impacting the environment thanks to water/food waste, pollution, and high energy consumption. Because there isn’t much motivation to leave the resort (and, in fact, you’re incentivized to stay because you’ve already paid for all the amenities), tourist dollars don’t make it out to small businesses in the surrounding community. Many resorts are also owned by multinational corporations, meaning that more money flows out of the country than staying in it to improve the lives of the citizens who are hosting you.

I’m not shaming anyone who chooses to stay at an all-inclusive resort, but it’s important to understand the greater impact of our tourism choices, particularly in low-income or vulnerable communities. Luckily, there are some ways to counteract these disadvantages:

• Tip generously , especially servers and housekeeping staff, as this money goes directly into their pockets and therefore to their families.
• Leave the resort occasionally to patronize local restaurants, and buy your souvenirs from shops in town rather than on the resort property.
• Book optional excursions directly through local vendors rather than through the resort.
• Upon your return, consider making donations to nonprofit organizations doing good work in the communities you’ve visited.
• Finally, and this should go without saying, but be kind, courteous, and respectful to the staff on the property. Greet them when you pass and thank them when they provide you with help or service. Learn and use a phrase or two of the local language, compliment the beauty of their country, and generally show appreciation for the privilege of your vacation and the work they’re doing to make it great. Staff can often be ignored or treated like they’re invisible – or worse, like servants – by guests, so showing that you acknowledge and appreciate the work they do can go a long way.

So there you have them: my list of pros and cons of all-inclusive resorts! I hope that these points are helpful as you decide whether or not a resort stay is right for you. Just remember, though, that like any group of hotels, all-inclusive resorts are not all created equal. Do your research ( or have Full Life, Full Passport do it for you! ), read reviews, fully investigate any travel deals , and go with your gut. Above all, though, don’t let yourself be travel-shamed . It’s your money, your time off, your vacation, and your decision on how you choose to relax and see the world.

One thing to keep in mind is that some countries, Cuba for instance, don’t have necessities that we don’t think twice about. Toothpaste (I ask my dentist if they would donate a box or two), soap, toothbrushes, toys, school supplies, simple drugs (ibuprofen, acetaminophen) pantyhose for the waitresses, working gloves for the gardeners, etc etc. Those simple things to us are like gems to them. They appreciate goods sometimes more than a tip. So when you are packing your suitcase leave a few things behind and pack some well needed goodies!

An all inclusive vacation is a choice you make . They are a simple vacation that is worry free when staying at a 4 star resort or better . I have been on 8 or more of these vacations and have enjoyed them all . Research a resort you may wish to go to through trip adviser and actually view the resort through youtube .

I love that you talked about how cost-effective it is to stay at an all-inclusive resort which can give us an idea of how much you should prepare for our vacation before we even go there. I hope that I can find a historic lodge with an all-inclusive so that we can already have a budget in place for our trip. In my experience working for more than a decade in the travel industry, to get the best deal on a cheap all-inclusive vacation, the best time to book a hotel is early. Or alternatively, play chicken and see if you can score a last-minute deal. Because prices fluctuate based on demand times, prices for our selected properties might be higher during peak season (also known as high season). For instance, you will see a spike in all-inclusive resort rates as well as airfares during times when people are looking for warm winter getaways and during spring break.

On the other hand, prices below our max budget may be found during the off-season, where you might face a higher likelihood of inclement weather. While it may be tempting to snag the lowest rates of the year, remember to look at all the angles. Shoulder season is the sweet spot between pricier rates and the lower cost of the off-season.

After or in between treatments, relax at any of this spa resort 's six pools. They're all great, but we might recommend The Secret, an adults-only pool open until midnight. Looking to get some activity? Let the kids have their pirate ship (it's a feature of one of the pools, as are water slides)—if you want to ramp things up yourself, just go to the well-equipped fitness center attached to the spa.

What Is Accessible Tourism?

Accessible tourism is defined as all-inclusive tourism and travel. This means that people with or without disabilities have equal access and enjoyment of touristic activities and travel in general. 

According to Simon Darcy and Tracey J. Dickson, authors of the article A Whole-of-Life Approach to Tourism: The Case for Accessible Tourism Experiences , “ Accessible tourism enables people with access requirements, including mobility, vision, hearing and cognitive dimensions of access, to function independently and with equity and dignity through the delivery of universally designed tourism products, services, and environments.” This also includes seniors and those traveling with children in strollers.

The three dimensions of accessibility are physical access, sensory access, and communication access. 

• Physical access for those with physical disabilities that require wheelchairs, walking aids, or handrails
• Sensory access for those who have sight or hearing impairments 
• Communication access for those who have impairments involving speech, vision, and hearing

Accommodation makes up a big part of tourism and travel. Therefore, as a vacation rental owner, you have a significant role in creating these equal opportunities. By providing the right services and design in your vacation home, you can be part of a positive shift in sustainable and responsible tourism while attracting new guests. 

Examples of Accessible Vacation Rentals

So, how can the hospitality sector adapt to accessible tourism ? What changes can we make as individuals to ensure an equal and inclusive experience for all? 

While the first step in creating accessible tourism is a change in mindset, another extremely important factor is universal design. Stephen Cluskey , CEO of Mobility Mojo, a company that helps hotel groups improve their accessibility, defines this as “the design of products and environments that are usable by everyone to the greatest possible extent, without the need for adaptations.” 

The ADA states that entrance doors should be at least 32 inches wide. If the path to the entrance door requires a stairway, a stable ramp (or a lift) should be built with a slope no greater than 1:12. A ramp longer than 6 feet should have railings between 34 and 38 inches high.   

Regarding the entrance door, handles should be operable with a closed fist and not higher than 48 inches. If there is an alternative accessible entrance, there should be signs clearly indicating this to the guests. 

Furniture behind the entryway should be cleared to ensure easy access. 

For an accessible vacation rental bathroom, ensure that the doorway is at least 32 inches wide and that there is a 36-inch-wide path to the shower, sink, and toilet. 

Toilet seats are recommended to be 17 to 19 inches high with grab bars behind and around them. The sink rim shouldn’t exceed 34 inches in height and the faucet should be operable with a closed fist. Ensure that soap dispensers, towels, and toiletries are within reach and also usable with a closed fist. 

Walk-in showers should be equipped with handles, seating options, and a detachable showerhead. 

Add a large mirror in the room that allows full visibility. 

If possible, lower kitchen countertops for those who are not able to reach high surfaces. By removing floor cabinets, you can facilitate access to the counter. However, you can also consider investing in cabinets that allow toe kicks for people in wheelchairs. 

Install an ADA approved wall oven that opens from side to side. This is useful for anyone with mobility issues. While adding enough space under the kitchen sink and cooking areas, it is also recommended to set up a tilted mirror above the stove to allow full visibility. 

Take advantage of today’s advances in technology by researching new devices that can help improve the overall experience of your guests. 

Like all other rooms in the vacation rental, the accessible bedroom entryway should be at least 36 inches wide. Start off by making the bed accessible and allowing enough space for pathways between all furniture. 

To make it easier for people with disabilities to get in and out of bed, the recommended height is 20 to 23 inches from the floor to the top of the mattress. Add bed rails or grab bars for support and put any bedside light switches or lamps at an easy reach.

To minimize the risk of injury, avoid carpet flooring or materials that are slippery and remove unnecessary clutter. Double-check that all wires are attached to the wall as this can be a hazard for those using a wheelchair. 

Windows should be placed 35 inches from the floor and equipped with lever handles. For the visually impaired, make sure that closets and cabinets are well-lit.

While the list is endless, here are some more examples of ways to provide accessible tourism as a vacation rental owner: 

• Walking-stick holders for seniors and those who need support when walking
• Wheelchair access and barrier-free paths 
• Elevators to all floors 
• Special parking areas
• Improved communication and translators for those who are hearing or voice impaired
• Availability of assistive devices like wheelchairs, memory aids, and pill organizers
• Access to screen readers
• Having a trained staff that can help with accessibility issues

Why Is Accessible Tourism Important?

First and foremost, accessible tourism is crucial because it is a human right for everyone. As a society, it is our social responsibility to provide accessibility in tourism. The World Health Organization indicates that 15% of the global population has some disability. That’s 1 billion people who have experienced disadvantages when it comes to traveling. 

Accessible tourism is also beneficial to the economy because it’s an exceptional business opportunity for destinations to expand their range of tourists. By catering to a much wider audience, business owners can attract new clientele. 

While there’s still a long way to go before achieving universal accessibility in tourism, the advances and positive changes that have been made in the past few years show that society is going in the right direction. With the collaboration of tourism stakeholders (which includes governments, tourism organizations, businesses, and tourists), we can work towards becoming a more equal and inclusive sector.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality . 

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT. 

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT. 

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017. 

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT. 

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET. 

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com . 

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.
