Which cruise brand is best for you? A guide to the most popular lines

Thinking about booking your first cruise? The sheer range of choices can be daunting. There are more than two dozen lines marketing to North Americans — no two alike.

The list of brands includes everything from giant companies such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line, which are household names, to lesser-known small operators such as Windstar Cruises.

Some of the brands — Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line, in particular — operate massive vessels that are like giant floating resorts with deck-top water parks and other over-the-top amusements . Others specialize in intimate, boutique hotel-style ships.

Some lines, such as Carnival, are aimed at a budget crowd. Others operate vessels that are as luxurious as any upscale resort found on land. A few small luxury players such as Regent Seven Seas Cruises have ships with lavish suites that'll cost you as much as $11,000 a day .

Where should you start your search for the perfect cruise for you? Below, you'll find our quick guide to some of the most popular cruise brands. As you'll see, it's not meant to be an in-depth review of the lines. It's just a short overview — enough to give you a sense of which particular cruise operator might best appeal to you.

With just four ships, each holding fewer than 700 passengers, Azamara is one of the smallest players in the cruise business. But it has a loyal following of travelers who appreciate the upscale ambience of its vessels, the inclusive amenities it offers (including gratuities and alcoholic drinks) and its destination focus.

The line prides itself on offering longer stays in ports, including multi-day visits. Its ships have an intimate, boutique-hotel feel. Pricing is higher than at the big, mass-market lines but not quite as high as you'll find at luxury lines.

Carnival Cruise Line

The self-described "fun ship" line is the king of short, affordable, fun-focused cruises from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Mexico and beyond.

The choice of roughly one in five cruisers, Carnival Cruise Line' s ships are notoriously lively, flashy and packed with fun features such as water parks with multiple waterslides. Just don't expect anything too fancy .

Celebrity Cruises

Designed to be a cut above mainstream options such as Carnival while remaining relatively affordable, this Miami-based "premium" line is known for some of the most stylish big ships at sea.

Expect high-end design, cutting-edge art and trendy restaurants. In short, Celebrity aims for sophisticates, not the party crowd (although it's not a luxury product).

Celebrity's four newest ships, Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Apex , Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent, feature "infinite veranda" cabins that are open to the sea in a way we haven't seen with other ocean ships. They boast a glass wall that opens from the top to create a balcony-like effect.

Crystal Cruises

This much-beloved luxury line recently restarted operations under new owners after shutting down for 18 months. For years, it was considered the ultimate luxury cruise operator, and our take after sailing on Crystal Serenity after its relaunch is that the line is even better than before. Initially, Crystal has returned to operations with just two ships. But it recently announced plans to expand rapidly with four more ships over the next six years.

A storied line with roots that go back to the 1800s, this three-ship brand is perhaps best known for its 2,695-passenger flagship, Queen Mary 2. The ship lives up to its billing as a true ocean liner with semiregular, transatlantic service between Southampton, England, and New York.

Cunard fans love the line's relatively formal vibe (including nightly dress codes) and other nods to ocean liner tradition, including evenings with ballroom dancing. A fourth Cunard ship called Queen Anne is set to debut in 2024.

Disney Cruise Line

Meet-and-greets with Disney characters, Disney-themed shows and the most extensive kiddie fun zones on the high seas are just a few of the family-friendly allures of a Disney cruise . If you're a Disney fan, nothing quite compares.

If Disney isn't your thing, well, this probably isn't the line for you. The biggest downside of the brand? As with Disney's parks on land, it doesn't come cheap.

Holland America

Tradition long has been a touchstone for this storied line, which dates to 1873 and is known for carefully crafted, globe-circling itineraries on midsize ships.

However, Holland America has been shaking things up in recent years with lively new venues such as B.B. King's Blues Club. Couples and retirees are the market for this line. Families with kids might want to look elsewhere.

MSC Cruises

A giant of cruising in Europe, Switzerland-based MSC Cruises is making a big play for North Americans with newer, bigger ships sailing year-round from Florida to the Caribbean and Bahamas. It also offers sailings from New York City.

Like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, MSC Cruises operates big, resort-like vessels that appeal to a broad audience. Among the highlight of its cruises in North America are stops at its new private island in the Bahamas, the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve .

Norwegian Cruise Line

Multistory waterslides, ropes courses and even go-kart race tracks are among the gee-whiz attractions atop Norwegian Cruise Line 's giant, resort-like ships. The vessels also are packed with eateries, bars, casinos and showrooms.

The brand is known for its entertainment, including big Broadway shows such as "Beetlejuice." If you're looking for a Las Vegas-style resort at sea, this is your line.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania has carved out a niche with relatively small, upscale ships that offer a significant upgrade from mass-market vessels but aren't quite as fancy (or pricey) as luxury offerings.

Its seven ships feature a relaxed, country club-like ambience and inspired dining that appeal to a mostly older crowd.

Itinerary-wise, Oceania is known for destination-intensive voyages that typically are 10 nights or more in length, with some globe-circling trips as long as 180 days.

This France-based line is a specialist in expedition cruising , a type of cruising that involves traveling to remote, hard-to-reach places on small, hardy vessels that carry their own landing craft.

Operating a fast-growing fleet of tough but upscale expedition ships (none carrying more than 264 passengers), Ponant is known for voyages to places like Antarctica and the Arctic.

If you're looking for waterslides and laser tag, this is not the cruise line for you.

Princess Cruises

Popular with middle-aged couples, retirees and multigenerational families, the "Love Boat" line's ships aren't as flashy (or big, for the most part) as those of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, and that's just the way its customers like it.

Princess Cruises ' customers also like its wide range of itineraries, including voyages in Asia and Australia, as well as closer-to-home places like the Caribbean. It's long been one of the dominant lines in the Alaska cruise market.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

This Miami-based luxury line operates some of the most opulent vessels at sea, including three recently unveiled Explorer-class ships billed as the most expensive luxury vessels ever built on a cost-per-berth basis.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises is particularly known for some of the most over-the-top suites at sea (including some bigger than the average American home ), some of the most inclusive fares in the cruise business and high levels of service. The only catch: You'll pay a pretty penny for it. Rooms on Regent ships start at around $1,000 per person per day and can cost as much as $5,500 per person per day.

Royal Caribbean

For megaresort fans, there's nothing quite like a Royal Caribbean vessel.

The line's biggest ships are more than 20% bigger than almost any others afloat (only MSC Cruises has ships that come close in size) and feature every type of amusement imaginable, from rock climbing walls and surfing pools to Broadway shows and ice skating rinks.

Families, in particular, will love this line, due to all the family-friendly activities and venues on its vessels. Royal Caribbean ships sail everywhere in the world, but the line's heaviest presence is in the Caribbean and Europe.

Another leader in luxury cruising, this seven-ship brand offers all-suite vessels, top-notch service and elegant cuisine.

As with other luxury lines, Seabourn offers a wide range of itineraries around the globe. It also recently jumped into more adventurous, expedition-style cruising with two new 264-passenger vessels designed to operate in polar regions such as Antarctica and the Arctic.

Silversea Cruises

Exquisite service, refined dining and well-appointed accommodations are hallmarks of this Monaco-based luxury line with 12 vessels. Silversea Cruises is also known for its industry-leading array of off-the-beaten-path itineraries.

Its growing fleet of small expedition ships will take you everywhere from the Arctic to Papua New Guinea in style.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Fans of upscale hotel chain Ritz-Carlton will feel at home on one of this line's yacht-like vessels. Or, at least, that's the idea.

The cruising arm of Ritz-Carlton has been in operation for just a bit over a year, and the jury still is out on where it ranks in the pantheon of luxury cruise brands. The line notably struggled to get off the ground after years of construction delays for its first and only ship.

Dubbed Evrima, the line's only operating ship is a 298-passenger vessel designed to appeal to Ritz-Carlton regulars with an elegant, residential look. A second, bigger ship called Ilma that's already open for bookings debuts later this year.

This fast-growing line has dominated the world of river cruising for North Americans for years, and in the last few years, it's become a significant player in upscale ocean cruising as well. Viking 's 80 river ships operate on just about every major river in the world, and its 10 ocean ships (up from just one in 2015) can be found in a growing number of destinations, too.

Viking is known for impeccably designed vessels with modern Scandinavian interiors and offering unusual, port-intensive itineraries. They also operate with a mostly all-inclusive format, as Viking long has subscribed to a "no nickel-and-diming" philosophy. Just don't bother booking the family. Kids under 18 aren't allowed on Viking.

Virgin Voyages

This relatively new cruise line, backed by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, is reinventing mainstream cruising with a hipper, more inclusive, younger vibe (though not too young; its ships are adults-only). Think tattoo shops, karoake booths and no upcharges for tips or eateries.

Virgin Voyages ' first three ships ( Scarlet Lady , Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady ) have suites by acclaimed designer Tom Dixon. Destinations include the Dominican Republic, Mexico and a private beach club in the Bahamas, as well as parts of Europe and Australia.

Windstar Cruises

If the idea of sailing on a big ship makes you cringe, small-ship specialist Windstar could be the answer.

Its six vessels carry just 148 to 342 passengers — fewer than fit on a single big-ship lifeboat — and are wonderfully intimate.

Romantic types will love Windstar's three vessels with sails — a relative rarity. Foodies can choose one of the James Beard-themed cruises, which include market tours and cooking demonstrations with a James Beard Award-winning chef.

The survey for the 2024 Readers' Choice Awards is open, vote now for your favourite places, hotels, airports, cruise lines, travel fixers and more.

Cruises are booming right now, buoyed partly by the popularity of domestic seacations that hauled in first-time sailors. So much so that Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ 34,000-mile world trip for 2024 sold out in just over two hours, while the adults-only Virgin Voyages, which aims to throw cruise stereotypes overboard, rose to first place in Large Ships. And we’ve brought back last year's new category showcasing the expedition cruises – small, often sustainable vessels with a shoal of scientific experts onboard – that follow in the wake of adventurers such as Sir Ernest Shackleton.

U.S. News Announces the 2023 Best Cruise Lines

Virgin Voyages earns its first No. 1 ranking in the Best for the Money category.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. News & World Report, publisher of Best Hotels , Best Vacations and Best Travel Rewards Programs , today released its annual rankings of the Best Cruise Lines .

The 2023 rankings highlight 17 cruise lines to help every type of traveler find the cruise that’s right for them. For the first time, Virgin Voyages takes the No. 1 spot in the Best Cruise Lines for the Money ranking, offering the best value among cruise lines. U.S. News considered the overall cruise line quality and average base fare per night, as well as extra benefits such as free gratuities, Wi-Fi access and all-inclusive package options. Carnival Cruise Line, known for its budget-friendly fares and frequent sales, and Celebrity Cruises, which offers a more upscale experience at reasonable rates, rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

For the ninth consecutive year, Disney Cruise Line is the Best Cruise Line for Families . The family-oriented line offers ships with character meet-and-greets, themed dinners, nighttime fireworks, waterslides and more. Royal Caribbean International comes in at No. 2, thanks to its onboard amenities that cater to guests of all ages, while Carnival Cruise Line ranks No. 3, offering family-friendly perks like water parks, basketball courts and ropes courses on its ships.

"After more than two years of sailing restrictions and limited voyage options due to the coronavirus pandemic, cruisers and cruise lines are excited to be on the seas again,'' said Nicola Wood, senior travel editor at U.S. News. "The Best Cruise Lines rankings evaluate a variety of cruise types, making it easy for travelers to find the best options that fit their budgets, cruising styles and desired destinations."

U.S. News ranks cruise lines in six categories: Best Cruise Lines for the Money, Best Cruise Lines for Families, Best Cruise Lines for Couples, Best Cruise Lines in the Caribbean, Best Cruise Lines in the Mediterranean and Best Luxury Cruise Lines. The rankings follow a comprehensive, transparent methodology that factors in expert evaluations of ship quality, traveler ratings, health assessment results and more.

Best large-ship cruise lines

1. Royal Caribbean

Best for active families Royal Caribbean operates some of the most innovative ships in the world, along with the biggest — Icon of the Seas (debuting in 2024). There are plenty of “wow” moments, from skydiving simulators and zip-lining to dazzling ice shows, high diving displays and a bar that glides up and down between decks. The youth programme, Adventure Ocean, is one of the finest at sea, whether you’re travelling with babies or adrenaline-hungry teens — and the Ultimate Family Suite has a slide between two floors.

Best for glamour and tradition Cunard’s three Queens offer the epitome of elegance at sea. The flagship Queen Anne launches in 2024; the first time since 1999 that Cunard has had a four-vessel fleet. This is the line to choose if you love dressing up, ballroom dancing and the sense of sailing on a ship that turns heads in every port. A transatlantic crossing between Southampton and New York on Queen Mary 2 is on many a traveller’s bucket list, harking back to the golden age of transatlantic liners.

3. P&O Cruises

Best for Brits P&O’s fleet sails from Southampton all summer, with fly-cruises in winter in sun-soaked destinations including the Caribbean and the Canaries. Two ships, Arcadia and Aurora, are aimed at adults only, while others are ideal for families, thanks to the first-rate children’s clubs. The line’s Food Heroes, including chefs Marco Pierre White and José Pizarro, and wine expert Olly Smith, often join special themed cruises. Iona was the biggest ship ever built for the UK market and comes complete with dazzling entertainment venues, a cookery school and its own gin distillery. In 2022 it was joined by sister ship Arvia.

4. Marella Cruises

Best for spa Marella’s friendly, informal cruises are affordable and all-inclusive, with a wide range of departures to join its ships from regional airports in the UK . In summer 2023, the family-orientated Marella Voyager became the latest member of the fleet. Spa fans should go for Marella Explorer or Marella Explorer 2, both of which feature a superb spa by Champneys, the only seagoing venture for the wellness brand. Otherwise, expect high energy entertainment aimed at British tastes and a friendly vibe.

5. Celebrity Cruises

Best for contemporary style Celebrity offers an upmarket, elegant experience on 14 ultra-modern ships featuring high-tech entertainment and a wide choice of dining venues. Celebrity Edge and its younger sisters, Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Beyond, are perfect for a younger audience looking for buzzing nightlife, while their five predecessors come with the lovely feature of a 2,000 sq m lawn on the top deck, the perfect spot for lounging in the sun with a glass of Pimm’s. Upgrade to The Retreat for perks including Kelly Hoppen-designed accommodation and access to Luminae, an exclusive restaurant for suite guests.

6. MSC Cruises

Best for the full big-ship experience Italian-owned MSC operates big, glitzy ships with Swarovski crystal staircases aimed at an international audience looking for lively entertainment and high-end shopping. The line grew even more in autumn 2022 with the launch of the 6,774-passenger World Europa, MSC’s longest, tallest and biggest ship. The MSC Yacht Club is a ship-within-a-ship, with access to an exclusive lounge, sun deck area and restaurant, and is well worth the upgrade. Look out for offers in the school holidays; MSC does some great deals for families.

7. Princess Cruises

Best for multigenerational groups In early 2022, Princess Cruises took delivery of its newest ship, Discovery Princess — the fifth and final Royal-class ship — to enhance an already young and modern fleet. Princess is known for its glitzy entertainment, glamorous (but not overly formal) dress-up nights and its impressive dining choices, not least Sabatini’s, an Italian restaurant on each ship. Princess pioneered the concept of Movies Under the Stars, with a giant screen on deck, and the impressive technology of Ocean Medallion, a wearable device that does everything from opening your cabin door and having food and drink delivered wherever you are, to locating your family around the ship.

8. Fred. Olsen Cruises

Best for imaginative itineraries Fred. Olsen has a loyal following of mature British cruise fans who come back regularly for the friendly service, imaginative itineraries and traditional feel of the line’s four ships, all of which have a sleek, classic profile. The Olsen Art Studio was recently unveiled on its newest ships, Bolette and Borealis, offering destination-themed classes such as painting the northern lights in Norway and embroidery sessions on the island of Madeira, which is known for its needlework.

9. Norwegian Cruise Line

Best for families Round-the-clock razzle dazzle is the vibe on Norwegian’s big, brightly coloured ships, which feature everything from original Broadway shows to waterslides, an outdoor nightclub and the longest go-kart track at sea. For thrill-seekers, Norwegian Prima has the world’s first free-fall dry slide at sea. Each ship offers multiple restaurants, many of them included in the fare, and the family entertainment is unrivalled. For a peaceful retreat from the action, upgrade to the suites in The Haven.

10. Holland America Line

Best for a traditional cruising experience Holland America Line’s sleek, stylish ships embrace maritime traditions and appeal to a more mature traveller who enjoys fine food and imaginative itineraries. Its latest ship, Rotterdam, is the seventh to carry the historic name — first used in 1872 — for the line. The newest ships have a superb live music scene, thanks to partnerships with BB King’s Blues Club, Rolling Stone and Lincoln Center Stage. Holland America sails all over the world but is especially strong in Alaska, where it offers a range of land tours and train journeys in conjunction with its cruises.

Best for luxury Silversea’s 13 ultra-luxurious, all-inclusive ships attract affluent, active travellers who enjoy the line’s Italian flair, fine dining and the attentive service on board. Alongside sister ship RMS Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary operated a transatlantic route from 1936 to 1949 under the short-lived depression-era partnership between the Cunard and White Star lines, followed by continuing service through 1967 for Cunard. Its tenure included service as a troop carrier between Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom during World War II. The years at sea were not without mishap; Queen Mary suffered a near-capsizing roll in 1943 and ran aground in 1949.

Since 1967, the ship has been permanently moored in Long Beach, California, adjacent to the Carnival cruise terminal. Before the age of grand ocean liners waned, SS United States entered the market as the largest liner built entirely in the U.S., as well as the fastest transatlantic ship, with an average speed of over 35 knots during its maiden crossing in 1952. Often called the "Big U," the ship still holds the westbound speed record for transatlantic passenger service, known as the Blue Riband.

The U.S. government helped finance a portion of the construction, ensuring that the ship could easily be converted into a troop carrier or hospital ship if the need arose. The United States was retired from service in 1969 but stood at the ready as a reserve ship for the U.S. Navy until 1978.

Since then, the fate of the ship has been uncertain, with a long string of ownership changes and failed schemes to bring the ship up to current operational and safety standards for cruise ships, position it as a permanently docked hotel or even sell onboard condominiums. The ship has narrowly escaped the scrapyard more than once.

Today, the cruise ship -- most famous for American engineering -- rests in Philadelphia under the ownership and care of the SS United States Conservancy, awaiting a potential new life as a waterfront attraction and museum.

Queen Elizabeth 2, though built as an ocean liner, became famous more as a hybrid craft that brought together the best of a traditional ocean liner and a modern cruise ship -- ideal for its pioneering annual world cruises.

Following the ship's career of almost four decades and more than 5 million miles that included service as a troop carrier in the Falklands War and a massive conversion from steam power to diesel, Cunard retired QE2 in 2008. After almost a decade out of public use, QE2 opened as a luxury hotel in Dubai in 2018.

While not having quite the same name recognition as our top four ships, the original Carnival Mardi Gras holds a significant spot in cruising history as Carnival's first cruise ship.

As the era of ocean liners ended, those ships were up for grabs by companies ready to cash in on the concept of cruising for cruising's sake. Enter Carnival, which purchased Empress of Canada, an ocean liner launched in 1960. It gave the ship a new lease on life in 1972 as Mardi Gras, the first "Fun Ship."

Its sister ship, Empress of Britain, became Carnival's second ship, sailing under the name Carnivale. It was not until 1982 that Carnival launched its first purpose-built ship, Tropicale, which heralded the era of new cruise ships and a phasing out of the old converted ocean liners.

Mardi Gras changed ownership and names several times before its eventual sale for scrap in 2003 after 42 years in service. In December 2018, Carnival announced the revival of the name Mardi Gras for its largest ship built to date, set to launch in 2020.

Known for its appearances in most episodes of television series "The Love Boat," the original Pacific Princess sailed around the globe from 1975 to 2002, operated by Princess Cruise Lines. As the popular TV show fueled the explosion of the cruising industry, the ship also became well known.

Before it was dubbed "The Love Boat," Pacific Princess first was operated by Flagship Cruises with a singular purpose of cruising between the United States and Bermuda between 1971 and 1975 under the name MS Pacific.

As with many famous cruise ships, Pacific Princess' years at sea were not always smooth sailing. In 1998, crew members reportedly used the ship in a drug smuggling operation in the Mediterranean. Its final voyage as Pacific Princess was in 2002, when Princess replaced the vessel in the fleet with the former Renaissance Cruises' R Three , which still holds the name Pacific Princess.

sinking of Costa Concordia remains one of the most tragic moments in the history of modern cruising, serving as a strong reminder of why safety onboard cruise ships must be a priority.

On January 13, 2012, Concordia hit a rock off Isola del Giglio, northwest of Rome, creating a 160-foot gash along the port side. With crippled propulsion and electrical systems, the ship took on water, listed badly to the port side, then eventually grounded itself on its starboard side, resting precariously near a 260-foot-deep crevasse.

All but 32 passengers and crewmembers onboard survived the harrowing wreck and almost six-hour evacuation. Captain Francesco Schettino was subsequently imprisoned for manslaughter.

Costa Concordia was eventually salvaged and sold for scrap.

Also counted among the infamous cruise ships of recent years is Carnival Triumph, which gained notoriety for a 2013 cruise during which an engine room fire resulted in massive systems failures and loss of power off the coast of Mexico. Lights and air-conditioning ceased to function, and sewage flowed through passenger areas of the ship, earning the ill-fated trip the nickname "The Poop Cruise."

Triumph was eventually towed to safety in Mobile, Alabama, after drifting without power for four nights in challenging conditions. While docked there undergoing repairs, Triumph sustained hull damage when high winds tore the ship loose from its moorings. Damage from both incidents was eventually repaired, and Triumph returned to service.

In 2019, Triumph received a massive refurbishment to become the second Sunshine-class ship, complete with a new name: Carnival Sunrise .

Royal Caribbean has long been famous for its vessels, which are marvels of ship-building engineering. Much of the fleet has held top size rankings among modern cruise ships, but Oasis of the Seas ushered in a new era of size, capacity, entertainment and design, making it one of the most memorable vessels sailing the world's oceans today.

With a gross tonnage of more than 225,000 tons, Oasis has a crew larger than many cruise ships' passenger counts -- more than 2,400. The crew serves more than 6,000 passengers at maximum capacity, a record for passenger ships when Oasis made her maiden voyage in 2009.

The innovative above-the-water design includes the world's first park at sea with more than 14,000 live plants and unique architecture featuring two towers of balcony cabins on either side of the ship, facing both outward toward the sea and inward toward the opposite tower with empty space in the middle. This design creates seven decks of open-air balcony cabins with blue sky overhead and views of public spaces below.

With those towers, combined with the rear-facing Aqua Theater, the ship has one of the most famous profiles in modern cruising history -- at least until the next big innovation comes along.

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas will be the world's biggest new cruise ship.

Cruising is one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism, with passenger numbers projected to reach 37.2 million by 2025, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Cruise lines are responding to this growth by building new (and often, larger) vessels with all the bells and whistles, including technological advancements that are more environmentally friendly and create the capability to use alternative fuels.

U.S. News has compiled this roundup of new cruise ships that have just set sail or are scheduled to launch later in 2023 and in 2024, plus a preview of new ships coming in 2025 and beyond. The list includes everything from expedition and luxury yacht-style vessels to reimagined ships and megaships – plus the debut of a brand-new cruise line.

Oceania Vista: May 2023

Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Vista is the first ship in Oceania Cruises ' new Allura class and the line's first new ship in 10 years. Carnival Venezia: May 2023

Originally built for the Chinese cruise market in 2019, Carnival Venezia first sailed throughout Asia under the Costa Cruises brand. It headed to Europe in 2020, then was reintroduced as a Carnival Cruise Line vessel in 2023. The rebranded ship, now homeported in the U.S., features Carnival's "Fun Italian Style" concept, with Venetian-style artwork and the Piazza San Marco atrium – not to mention Italian-inspired beverages and dishes at venues like Frizzante, Amari, Marco Polo, the Canal Grande Restaurant and La Strada Grill.

Resilient Lady: May 2023

Virgin Voyages' third adults-only ship , Resilient Lady , debuted with its MerMaiden voyage sailing the Greek islands in May 2023. MSC Euribia: June 2023

The new space features floor-to-ceiling windows, indoor and outdoor areas, and Big Band at Sea: a 19-piece in-house group of musicians and entertainers. MSC Euribia can accommodate up to 6,327 passengers.

Viking Saturn: June 2023

The 746-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur will be Regent Seven Seas Cruises' third Explorer-class vessel when it launches late this fall. The line's signature Regent Suite – coming in at an impressive 4,443 square feet – has also been redesigned by Miami firm Studio DADO.

A few additional standout spaces include the art nouveau design of the Observation Lounge (located at the bow of the ship) and the reimagined Serene Spa. The stunning new Compass Rose is the ship's main dining room. Meanwhile, the onboard art collection is also notable: Seven Seas Grandeur will set sail with the first Fabergé egg at sea.

Celebrity Ascent: November 2023

Icon of the Seas is the first Icon-class vessel in the Royal Caribbean International fleet – and the first new class of ship since 2014. Sun Princess will have many new attractions when it launches in early 2024. When Queen Anne launches in spring 2024, it will be Cunard Line's 249th ship since the company's inception in 1840, and the line's first new vessel in 14 years. The 3,000-passenger ship will feature a fresh, modern design, yet still give a nod to the Cunard's art deco past.

Once on board, guests will discover new entertainment venues like the Bright Lights Society show bar and more wide-open spaces throughout the ship, as well as Cunard 's first two-story theater. New international dining options include Japanese restaurant Aji Wa with sushi and omakase menus, plus Indian cuisine at Aranya. Queen Anne also offers an extensive health and wellness program in collaboration with health group Mareel that features a large thermal suite, a spa pool and a top-deck wellness studio.

Utopia of the Seas: July 2024

Utopia of the Seas will be Royal Caribbean's sixth (and final) Oasis-class ship when it debuts in summer 2024. The line's Ultimate Abyss – a dry slide with 10 stories of thrilling twists and turns – will now stretch an additional 43 feet, making it the longest dry slide at sea.

Explora II: August 2024

Fans of Disney Cruise Line will find many familiar venues, attractions and restaurants on the new Disney Treasure, sister ship of Disney Wish . However, there will also be plenty of new features, including the theme of the ship: adventure. The Grand Hall, inspired by the movie "Aladdin," is designed with dark shades of blue, turquoise and gold and features a golden statue of a magic carpet with Aladdin and Jasmine.

Plaza de Coco replaces Disney Wish's "Frozen" dining experience with a two-night Mexican, "Coco"-themed theatrical dinner show. Meanwhile, "Disney The Tale of Moana" – a Broadway-style production based on the film "Moana" – will be exclusive to Disney Treasure. Adults will also find new lounges, such as the Jungle Cruise-themed Skipper Society and the Periscope Pub, which is inspired by "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." Disney Treasure can carry up to 4,000 passengers.

MSC World America: Spring 2025

MSC's new futuristic ship – and sister ship to MSC World Europa – will be based in Miami and sail the Caribbean. The LNG-powered, 6,762-passenger ship will offer more than 420,000 square feet of public space and many of the attractions found on World Europa, such as the MSC Luna Park Arena and World Galleria. There will also be more than 30 dining venues, bars and lounges, as well as the line's private enclave, MSC Yacht Club.

Oceania Allura: June 2025

Oceania Allura will be the eighth ship in Oceania's fleet, the second vessel of the line's Allura class and the sister ship to Oceania Vista. The 1,200-passenger Allura will offer the same upscale amenities as Vista, as well as a new Chef's Studio and one of the highest space-to-guest and staff-to-guest ratios in the cruise industry. Allura is scheduled to debut in June 2025.

Star Princess: August 2025

Star Princess is scheduled to set sail in 2025 as the sister ship to Sun Princess. The 4,300-passenger, LNG-powered ship will offer the same features as Sun Princess, including the Dome, the Piazza and the line's Signature Collection Suites. The vessel will also have 29-plus restaurants and bars.

Star of the Seas: Summer 2025

Royal Caribbean plans to introduce Star of the Seas – the second Icon-class vessel and sister to Icon of the Seas – in summer 2025.

Disney Cruise Line: 2025

Disney purchased the former Global Dream from Genting's Dream Cruises in 2022, when it was still being built at the German shipyard MV Werften. Disney plans to base the ship in Singapore for at least five years, offering Disney vacations to the Southeast Asian market. When it launches in 2025, the vessel will be the line's seventh ship and is expected to carry 6,000 passengers. Another newly built, currently unnamed Disney ship is planned to debut in 2025, as well.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 2025 and beyond

The third Prima-class ship is expected to be approximately 10% larger than the first ship in the class, Norwegian Prima (143,535 gross tons). The following ships for the line are anticipated to be even larger, with the fifth and sixth Prima-class vessels (debuting in 2027 and 2028) weighing as much as 171,000 gross tons.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity's fifth Edge-class ship will be more eco-friendly, thanks to the addition of a new tri-fueled engine model and the capacity to store three different kinds of fuel, including methanol. The effort toward net-zero emissions and more sustainable cruising is a partnership between Royal Caribbean, the French shipyard Chantiers de L'Atlantique and the technology firm Wärtsilä. A debut date for this ship has not yet been announced.

LPGA Major Exemptions on the Line for Augusta National Women’s Amateur Champion

AUGUSTA, Ga. — While every member of the 72-player field at this year’s Augusta National Women’s Amateur will be working to etch their name in the history books at one of golf’s most historic venues, that isn’t everything that’s on the line this week in Augusta, Ga.

Not only will the champion receive the coveted trophy and be exempt into the next five editions of the ANWA so long as they remain an amateur, but they’ll also be invited to participate in some of the most prestigious events in women’s golf on the LPGA Tour, receiving exemptions into four of the year’s five major championships.

The first event the ANWA winner will get to tee it up in is The Chevron Championship, which is set to begin in two weeks on Thursday, April 18. It’s the second year that the tournament will be contested at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas having been held at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., in its previous 51 editions.

Emilia Migliaccio, who made the 36-hole cut on the number on Thursday, was one of six amateurs in the field at The Chevron Championship in 2020 and fondly remembers her experience competing in the LPGA’s major, a moment that was made even more special by whom she got to play alongside in the first two rounds.

“After getting the exemption, I wondered who I was going to be paired with,” remembers Migliaccio. “It ended up being my college teammate, Jennifer Kupcho. It felt like we were back trying to qualify for Wake Forest. I remember we were both struggling, but then we fought back and made the cut. It was really memorable for me because that was my fourth major, but the first one I made a cut in.”

As one of the top-ranked amateurs in the world during her collegiate heyday, Migliaccio was more than used to competing on some of golf’s biggest stages, having done so plenty of times throughout her career. But the experience of teeing it up in a major alongside the world’s best players is something that cannot be recreated, even in the most storied of amateur tournaments. So Migliaccio is grateful that the ANWA winner will get that opportunity and will be hoping that she can mount one of the largest comebacks in Augusta National Women’s Amateur history to have that chance come the end of the final round.

“I know it would mean so much to every player in the field to earn an exemption into an LPGA major,” Migliaccio said. “There’s already so much that comes with winning ANWA, but to go from teeing it up with the best amateurs in the world to the best professionals just two weeks later, it’s just such a special opportunity. So much credit goes to Chevron for wanting to grow the game and to show off top amateur players on a major stage.”

Rachel Kuehn hasn’t had nearly as much experience as her Wake Forest teammate when it comes to playing in majors, but she does know what it’s like to battle against the Tour’s most talented. The now 22-year-old played in the 2023 Amundi Evian Championship last July, and while she ultimately missed the cut at Evian Resort Golf Club, it was an invaluable glimpse behind the curtain for the aspiring professional golfer.

“I had a great experience at Evian. I didn't play great, but being around the best players in the world was so special,” said Kuehn. “To go out and get a chance to play for an exemption into another major is a really cool opportunity for everyone in the field. It gives you a chance to evaluate where you are and where you want to go.

“Like my parents harped on when I was growing up, every experience, you should never take it for granted. When I was playing in the Evian, I tried my hardest to soak it all in and enjoy the week and learn from everyone that I got to play practice rounds and tournament rounds with. You don't know how often that's going to happen and how many chances you're gonna get to play in major championships.”

Currently sitting in a tie for second at 3-under with 18 holes at Augusta National Golf Club left to play, 16-year-old Gianna Clemente will be contending on Saturday in Georgia as she works to add the Augusta National Women’s Amateur title to her laundry list of incredible achievements.

As a 14-year-old in 2022, she Monday qualified for three straight LPGA Tour events and has played in one additional LPGA Tour tournament and two Epson Tour events since that same year, gaining plenty of knowledge about the professional ranks very early on in her young career. And she’ll lean on some of that experience as she works to win a title on Saturday at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

“It’s very important,” Clemente said when asked if she’ll rely upon her past success against professionals in the final round. “It can be a little bit intimidating. Obviously, Augusta National is very intimidating. Just reminding myself that I've been in these situations before, and I felt these nerves before. It's really important to draw some confidence off that.”

But having yet to play in a major championship, a goal that every little girl dreams of accomplishing when they pick up a golf club for the first time, Clemente’s eyes sparkled with anticipation at the mention of the opportunity to earn four LPGA Tour major exemptions with a victory. And having already had a taste of what it’s like to play on the biggest stage in women’s golf, you can be sure that Clemente will be doing everything she can on Saturday to make her dream a reality and find herself in the Chevron Championship in just a couple of weeks.

“It would be an honor. I would absolutely love to do that. Obviously, I have a lot of work ahead of me still left to make that happen,” said Clemente. “I've played in three LPGA events, and none of them were majors, but it was such good experience. I had a great time in all of them, and it was just so fun. I would love to be able to do that again.”

Here's what you should know about the Key Bridge collapse

Officials recovered the bodies of two construction workers who were on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday morning after a 984-foot-long cargo ship collided into a pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called the collapse Wednesday " a global crisis ."

"The national economy and the world's economy depends on the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country," Moore said.

Here's what you should know:

• The victims: The six people who are presumed dead were from Mexico Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr, the superintendent of Maryland State Police. Two bodies were recovered and have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala. The two workers were filling potholes on the bridge and were later found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water, Butler said. The FBI is handling notifying the victims' families, Butler said.
• Recovery efforts: Authorities are pausing search efforts for the four other workers who are presumed dead, because additional vehicles are encased in concrete and other debris, making it unsafe for divers, Butler said. Once salvage operations clear the debris, divers will search for more remains, he said.
• The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, according to the agency's chair Jennifer Homendy. During a Wednesday news conference, Homendy said there were 21 crew members and two pilots on board the Dali cargo ship when it crashed into the bridge. She also said a senior NTSB hazmat investigator identified 56 containers of hazardous material, and that some containers are in the water. The agency received six hours of voyage data from the ship and the investigation could take 12 to 24 months to complete, Homendy said. She emphasized that NTSB will not analyze information collected or provide conclusions while on scene of the collapse.
• Looking forward: Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will not be "quick or easy" but that it will get done. He said there are four main focus points ahead: reopening the port, dealing with supply chain issues until its reopening, rebuilding the bridge and dealing with traffic issues until the bridge is rebuilt. Biden  pledged the full support  of the federal government in the response and recovery efforts. His administration has already conveyed a sense of urgency to open up federal funding to remove debris and ultimately rebuild the bridge. Maryland has submitted a request to the Biden administration for emergency relief funds "to assist in our work going forward," Moore said Wednesday.

It's almost impossible to place people on the bow of ship due to the unstable structure, fire official says

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said Wednesday that the cargo ship's bridge structure and containers at the bow remain unstable.

"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very dangerous, to place people on the bow of that boat right now," Wallace told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.

"Naturally, we're still very cognizant of the fact that there are hazardous materials on board the vessel itself," Wallace said, alluding to the National Transportation Safety Board saying earlier that 56 containers were carrying hazardous materials.

Wallace said his team is relying heavily on aerial recognizance, including drones. "That's the only way we're able to see in," he said.  

He added that the aerial surveillance has "been able to really assure us right now we have no [chemical] reactions on board." 

"It's just utter devastation," NTSB chief says of the bridge collapse site

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the site of the Key Bridge collapse "devastating."

"It's pretty devastating, certainly, seeing not just what's going on with the cargo containers, but just looking at what was a bridge span — three bridge spans that is pretty much gone. It's just utter devastation," she said at Wednesday evening's news briefing.

She added that she is thinking of families who lost loved ones and those who are waiting to reunite with their lived ones.

NTSB interviewed the Dali's captain and some other crew members today, agency chief says

The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the ship's captain, his mate, the chief engineer and one other engineer today, according to Chair Jennifer Homendy.

The two pilots on board the Dali at the time of collision will be interviewed tomorrow, she added.

Cargo ship's voyage data recorder is basic when compared to an airplane's, NTSB chair says

The voyage data recorder on the cargo ship Dali was a "newer model" but is considered basic when compared to that on an airplane, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"But it is very basic compared to say, a flight data recorder, where we would have 1,000 parameters," she said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The NTSB chief investigator Marcel Muise added:

"It's not a ship-wide system recorder, so most of the sensors that are being recorded are from the bridge. So things like GPS, the audio, rudder feedback, rudder commands are recorded on there. But not engineering, the temperature of each cylinder, power distribution sensors."

There were no tug boats with Dali at the time of the collision. That's normal, NTSB chief says

There were no tugs with Dali when the cargo vessel collided with Baltimore's Key Bridge, which is normal protocol, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Remember: At 01:26:39 on Tuesday, Dali's pilot made a general very high frequency (VHF) radio call for tugs in the vicinity to assist, the NTSB investigator Marcel Muise had said.

"The tugs help the vessel leave the dock, leave the port and get into the main ship channel. And then they leave. Once it's on its way, it's a straight shot through the channel. So there are no tugs with the vessel at the time. So they were calling for tugs," she said.

NTSB chair says she saw some containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said she did see some of the 56 containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water.

When asked how many

When asked how many containers of hazardous materials were in the water, Homendy said:

"I did see some containers in the water, and some breached significantly on the vessel itself," she said. "I don't have an exact number, but it's something that we can provide in an update."

Homendy said that a preliminary report should be out in two to four weeks.

Bridge did not have any redundancy, unlike the preferred method for building bridges today, NTSB chair says

Baltimore's Key Bridge did not have any redundancy, which is included in the preferred method of building bridges in the present day, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"The bridge is a fracture critical," she explained. "What that means is if a member fails that would likely cause a portion of, or the entire bridge, to collapse, there's no redundancy. The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in, whether that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. This bridge did not have redundancy," Homendy said.

There are 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the United States out of 615,000 bridges total, she said, citing the Federal Highway Administration.
