Tour overview

The sacred Narmada River, the lifeline of Central India, is worshipped as Narmada maiyya or Maa Rewa. One of the seven holy rivers of India, it is the only one which has the tradition of being circumambulated from source to sea and back, on a pilgrimage or yatra. Being the longest west-flowing river, the Narmada parikrama is an incredible journey of about 3,800 km. The journey usually starts at the river’s source at Amarkantak in the Maikal Hills in Madhya Pradesh, goes along its southern banks, all the way to its mouth at Bharuch in Gujarat. At Bharuch, Mithi Talai is the point where the Narmada joins the Arabian Sea. Pilgrims take a motorboat from the southern to the northern end and begin the return journey along its northern bank. Pilgrims can, however, start from the mouth of the river, or anywhere in-between, but they must complete the circuit and return where they began. It is believed that in order to reap the benefits of this yatra, the river must always be kept on one’s right. There are other strict rules, and a number of formalities to follow on this pilgrimage. Motivated by prayer, pledge, or penance, this long parikrama is said to accelerate the process of self-awareness and spiritual growth, bring pilgrims peace, and fulfil their material and nonmaterial wishes.

Pilgrimage is spiritual bliss for the soul. In India, according to Hinduism, pilgrimages are journeys one must embark upon. The sacred Narmada River is the lifeline of Central India and is worshipped as a mother. Since ages, people are following the tradition of circumambulating around the river from its source to sea and back. The west-flowing river is said to be ideal for spiritual exercise, on a pilgrimage or yatra. Spanning for over 15 days, the Narmada Parikrama tour package is designed meticulously to help devotees complete this sacred journey with ease. The well-planned itinerary covers almost all the holy sites and offers a soul-soothing experience. Embark on the arduous pilgrimage to seek the blessings of Maa Narmada.

The Narmada Parikrama, also known as the circumambulation of the Narmada River, is a sacred pilgrimage undertaken by devotees in India. The Narmada River, considered one of the holiest rivers in Hinduism, flows through the central part of India, primarily through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.

The Narmada Parikrama is a tradition that involves walking the entire circumference of the Narmada River, covering a distance of approximately 2,600 kilometers. Devotees undertake this pilgrimage as an act of devotion and to seek spiritual blessings. The journey typically begins and ends at a significant point along the river, such as Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh, which is considered the source of the Narmada River according to Hindu mythology.

During the Narmada Parikrama, pilgrims walk along the banks of the river, visiting various temples, ghats (bathing places), and sacred sites associated with the Narmada. Along the way, they offer prayers, perform rituals, and immerse themselves in the spiritual atmosphere of the region. The pilgrimage is often seen as a test of endurance and faith, as devotees navigate through diverse terrain, including forests, hills, villages, and towns.

Throughout history, many saints, sages, and devotees have undertaken the Narmada Parikrama, seeking spiritual enlightenment and purification. It is believed that completing the circumambulation of the Narmada River grants immense spiritual merit and blessings.

Today, while the traditional foot journey remains popular among devotees, modern transportation options allow for variations in the pilgrimage, such as traveling by vehicle to key points along the river. However, for many, the traditional practice of walking the entire circumference of the Narmada River continues to hold great significance as a profound spiritual endeavor.

Uttarvahini Narmada Parikrama Yatra

Uttarvahini narmada parikrama.

Narmada river is among the 7 holiest rivers in Hinduism. The importance of the Narmada River as sacred is testified by the fact that the pilgrims perform a holy pilgrimage of a Parikrama or Circumambulation of the river. The Narmada Parikrama, as it is called, is considered to be a meritorious act that a pilgrim can undertake. It is considered very auspicious when a river flows in the North direction. Narmada river flows in the North direction near Garudeshwar – Tilakwada to Rampura. Hence termed as Uttar Vahini Narmada Parikrama. It is said that doing this Uttarvahini Narmada Parikrama is as auspicious as doing the whole Narmada Parikrama by way of walking. It must be done in the auspicious Chaitra month (by way of Hindu calendar).

This Uttarvahini Narmada Parikrama is considered very easy as against the whole Narmada Parikrama which takes more than 3 months to walk. This Uttarvahini Narmada Parikrama is also known as ‘Uttarvahini Panchkoshi” Narmada Parikrama. By way of a rule whilst doing Narmada Parikrama – it should be observed that Narmada Maiyya should always be on the right hand side. Our Uttarvahini Narmada parikrama starts at Rampura village and ends at Tilakwada. Narmada was born from the sweat of Lord Shiva while doing ‘Tandav’ dance. That is why Narmada is said to be the daughter of Lord Shiva. It is also said that, ‘Narmada ma jetla kankar etla badha j Shankar’ – ‘All pebbles in Narmada River are the form of Lord Shiva
