Trek Dual Sport Review

Unlike other bikes from Trek, the Dual Sport does not seen a lot of change from year to year. It’s a bike that is great at nothing, but good at everything, which makes it a great bike for mixed terrain trail riders. In this Trek Dual Sport review we’ll compare the Dual Sport to Trek’s FX and Verve hybrid bikes. We also compare specs across all 2022 Dual Sport bikes in the lineup.

The Trek Dual Sport is a hybrid bike. It comes with 40mm gravel tires, but is capable of holding a 2.1″ mountain bike tire. However, don’t get any ideas that the Dual Sport is capable of hitting mountain bike trails, because it’s not. The front fork is limited to a maximum of 63mm of travel. A hardtail bike with such limited travel will not be comfortable on chunky trails, placing it firmly in the hybrid bike category.

Trek Dual Sport 1 vs 2 vs 3

There are only three bikes in the Dual Sport lineup for 2022. In recent years Trek has offered a Dual Sport 4, but with the changes made to the drivetrain from the 3 down, there was no longer a need for a 4 this year. This is the first year the Dual Sport has had a genuine overhaul, and the changes are for the better overall.

2022 Trek Dual Sport 1 Review ($689 USD)

The main components to look for on a bike are the groupset, drivetrain and fork if the bike has suspension. The groupset determines how reliable and accurate your shifting will be, and if the chain remains tensioned while riding on rough terrain.

Groupset : The 2022 Trek Dual Sport 1 comes with an entry level groupset from Shimano that includes an Altus derailleur in the rear and Tourney up front. There is no clutch to keep tension on the chain, which means when the trail gets rough expect the chain to slip. This problem is easily resolved with a $14 chain guide/tensioner like this universal one on Amazon .

Drivetrain : The drivetrain gives you plenty of range for climbing hills, as well as low end gearing to go fast. With bikes moving to simpler drivetrains, it’s not surprising to see the 2022 Trek Dual Sport 1 make the change to a 2×8 drivetrain from a 3x in 2021 and older models. There is so much crossover on a 3x setup that you aren’t getting a true 24 speed bike. With the move to 2x there is less chance for crossing the chain and less duplicate gearing.

Fork : The front fork suspension is the weak point on the Dual Sport 1. It is equipped with the SR Suntour NEX fork. The fork features 63mm of travel and a 100x5mm quick release.

2022 Trek Dual Sport 2 Review ($789 USD)

Groupset : The 2022 Trek Dual Sport 2 gets a slight upgrade from the 1 when it comes to the groupset. The front and rear derailleur are Acera and Altus, respectively. You still don’t get the benefit of a clutch, which means a chain guide/tensioner is a must have upgrade. It is amazing how this part part costing less than $15 can eliminate your chain jumping gears and slipping, but the bike doesn’t come with one from the factory.

Drivetrain : You get more range making the upgrade from 1 to 2. The Dual Sport 2 drivetrain is 2×9 with an 11-36T cassette. The additional range will help cyclists living in extremely hilly or mountainous areas.

Fork : The fork on the 2022 Dual Sport 2 gets a hydraulic lockout added to the same SR Suntour NEX that comes on the one. Lockouts on front forks are usually worth the upgrade, but don’t expect a lot of life out of this one. After owning four bikes that have the SR Suntour NEX with lockout, I’ll never buy another. All four of the forks broke after six months of use. The lockout either stays locked and your fork is useless, or it breaks and doesn’t lock anything out.

Don’t expect your warranty to make the claim process easy. Your local bike shop cannot fix everything. In other words, you are forced to work directly with SR Suntour. My experiences with them have been awful unless you’re a full time bike mechanic that speaks in part numbers.

2022 Trek Dual Sport 3 Review ($979 USD)

It’s rare for the best value bike to also be the top of the line bike, for any model. That’s the case with the 2022 Dual Sport 3.

Groupset : The biggest upgrade to any bike in the lineup is the groupset on the 2022 Trek Dual Sport 3. It comes with Shimano Deore, and it includes a built-in clutch. That means your chain stays in place while pedaling over rough terrain. The reliability and accuracy on any groupset improves when it has a clutch.

Drivetrain : Another great find during this Trek Dual Sport review is the 1×10 drivetrain included on the DS 3. With 1x drivetrain you are getting easy and simple shifting so your focus can stay on the trail. The 11-46T cassette offers plenty of high and low end range, too.

Fork : An upgrade to the front fork puts this bike’s price tag over $1,000, so it’s an understandable move neglecting it. The 2021 Dual Sport 4, retired in 2021, came with a shifter lockout. It would have been nice to add that to the 2022 Dual Sport 3, especially since it’s still an SR Suntour NEX known to have problems.

Dual Sport vs FX vs Verve

Comparing the three most popular hybrid bike models from the largest bike manufacturer in the world is inevitable. Before diving too deep, these three bikes (Dual Sport, FX and Verve) may all be hybrid bikes, but they were all designed for completely different types of usage.

I love riding a bike designed for a specific usage. For example, I ride my road bike in the road, ride my gravel bike if there’s gravel, and my mountain bike on the trails. If I am riding just to get some exercise, I ride my FX 3. (Read: Trek FX 3 Review ).

The Dual Sport is not a bike I would ever choose to ride when compared to my other bikes. My gravel bike will be faster than the Dual Sport on gravel trails, and my mountain bike more capable on rough trails. A commuter will choose the Verve over the Dual Sport because the riding posture is more upright to better see traffic.

Overall, the 2022 Trek Dual Sport is an excellent bike for cyclists that do a lot of mixed trail rides. It’s a great bike to explore a new trail on because no matter what you come across, its capable of handling it. It’s great at nothing, but really good at everything. The

Let me now explain the most important features of the Trek Dual Sport bikes and compare them.

Frame and Geometry

All Dual Sport bikes come with an aluminum frame and are available in S-XL sizes but with forks made of either steel, aluminum, or carbon.

Trek Dual Sport has relatively aggressive geometry compared to other hybrid bikes.

They have a relatively aggressive geometry (compared to the Trek FX and Trek Verve ), so you can sit in a more aerodynamic position. It’s more suitable for faster-paced rides.

But it’s not as aggressive as on road bikes. But still, it might take some time to get used to.

Remember that the Dual Sport bikes don’t have low-step or step-through options.

Wheels and Tires

The wheel size on the Dual Sport Gen 4 was 700c , but the newer Gen 5 uses 650b wheels with wider tires.

Dual Sport’s high-volume 50mm tires make them suitable for off-road terrain. Thanks to lower pressures, they can also better absorb bumps and vibrations, contributing to a more comfortable ride.

However, they have higher rolling resistance , so you won’t be able to reach the same high speeds on paved roads as you would with road bikes or hybrid bikes like Trek FX .

Remember, only the Dual Sport 3 has tubeless-ready wheels but doesn’t come with tubeless-ready tires . Therefore, you may need to swap them later if you wish.

The Dual Sport Gen 5 has removed the 3X groupsets, which were overly complicated without significant benefits. Instead, they use 2X and 1X drivetrains that are simpler to use and maintain, as well as lighter.

Dual Sport frames come with mounts for kickstands, racks, and fenders , making it easy to install these accessories. These mounts are located on the front fork, top tube, and rear triangle.

Lastly, Dual Sport bikes come with slip-on grips , while the top-tier model, Dual Sport 3, has ergonomic lock-on grips that are easier to install, more comfortable, and help alleviate pressure on your hands.

So, which Trek Dual Sport bike is the best?

I believe the Trek Dual Sport 2 provides the best value for your money. This is due to its use of hydraulic disc brakes and lower weight than the Dual Sport 1. While the Dual Sport 3 is even lighter and uses better components, I don’t think it’s worth the extra $200. However, you should consider it if you prefer a 1X drivetrain, as the Dual Sport 2 has a 2X drivetrain.

I own a 2021 DS2, and I wouldn’t want to ride on towpaths, bridleways, or even some footpaths (those that remain due to lack of maintenance) alongside UK A roads without the front suspension. It really helps absorb the impact, preventing discomfort in my hands and wrists. Additionally, I can choose to lock the suspension if needed.

My review to bike.

Because I cherished my Dual Sport 1, I also purchased a Dual Sport 3. Excellent bike for light trail use and city commuting. Over bumpy city streets, the front suspension keeps my wrist from breaking, and the lockout is ideal for turning the power down. The gearing is made simpler with a 1x drivetrain, and the range is ideal for most urban and light trail use. Although wearing climbing equipment makes me work a little harder, this is not necessarily a bad thing.

Great Purchase

To go out and exercise together, my wife and I each purchased one. Now, the bikes practically beg us to ride them every day. For us, this was a wise investment. Our future holds more Trek bikes, I think! It is robust, portable, and adaptable. It is ideal for road biking.

Los Angeles Commuter

Due to the Dual Sport 3 XL becoming available for purchase just a few days before I received mine, my review may be a little biased. After extensive research, I spent a few months looking for bikes but was unable to locate a single 3 XL, the bike I knew would best suit my requirements. I found one in Santa Monica thanks to good luck. It’s a stunning bike, all black with red accents. Love how simple it is to shift gears with your right hand, how responsive and smooth the breaks are, how fast and smooth the ride is, and how the shocks keep you from being injured on the jerky LA roads. The seat is undoubtedly designed for use with padded shorts, so I’m going to either buy some padded riding shorts or a new one. Due to the roughness of the streets in Los Angeles, I opted for the 3 instead of the 1. I’m aware that my bike will be damaged because I love to ride and don’t hold back. A side note: Helens Bike Shop’s staff is outstanding.

Trek Dual Sport 1 Vs 2 Vs 3

The lineup for the Dual Sport category for 2022 only includes three bikes. Trek has offered a Dual Sport 4 in recent years, but this year there was no need for one due to changes made to the drivetrain from the 3 down. The Dual Sport has undergone a real overhaul for the first time this year, and overall the improvements are positive.

2022 Trek Dual Sport 1 Review ($689 USD)

The groupset, drivetrain, and fork, if the bike has suspension, are the three main parts to check for in a bicycle. The groupset controls your shifting’s precision and dependability as well as whether the chain holds tension while you’re riding over unforgiving terrain.

Groupset : The Trek Dual Sport 1 from 2022 has a Shimano entry-level groupset with an Altus derailleur at the back and a Tourney up front. Because there is no clutch to maintain chain tension, expect the chain to slip when the going gets tough. With a $14 universal chain guide/tensioner like this one from Amazon, this issue is easily fixed.

Drivetrain : The drivetrain provides you with plenty of range for tackling hills as well as low end gearing for accelerating quickly. It’s not surprising that the Trek Dual Sport 1 in 2022 will switch from a 3x drivetrain in 2021 and older models to a 2×8 drivetrain. Fork : The Dual Sport 1’s weakest component is the front fork suspension. The fork on it is an SR Suntour NEX fork. The fork has 63mm of travel and a 100x5mm quick release.

2022 Trek Dual Sport 2 Review ($789 USD)

Groupset : When it comes to the groupset, the Trek Dual Sport 2 in 2022 receives a slight upgrade from the 1. The names of the front and rear derailleurs are Acera and Altus, respectively. As a result, a chain guide/tensioner is an essential upgrade since you still lack the benefit of a clutch. Although the bike doesn’t come with one out of the box, it is amazing how this less than $15 part can stop your chain from slipping and jumping gears.

Drivetrain : By moving from 1 to 2, you gain more range. A 11-36T cassette and a 2×9 drivetrain make up the Dual Sport 2 drivetrain. The increased range will be beneficial to cyclists who live in very hilly or mountainous areas.

Fork : The same SR Suntour NEX that comes with the one is combined with a hydraulic lockout in the fork of the 2022 Dual Sport 2. Don’t expect this lockout to last very long, even though front fork lockouts are typically worth the upgrade. I won’t ever purchase another bike after owning four with the SR Suntour NEX lockout. After being used for six months, all four of the forks broke. Your fork is useless if the lockout remains locked, or it breaks and leaves nothing unlocked.

Expecting your warranty to make filing a claim simple is unrealistic. Nothing can be fixed by your neighborhood bike shop. You are compelled to collaborate with SR Suntour directly, in other words. Except if you’re a part-number-speaking full-time bike mechanic, my interactions with them have been terrible.

2022 Trek Dual Sport 3 Review ($979 USD)

For any model, it’s uncommon for the bike with the best value to also be the best bike overall. That applies to the 2022 Dual Sport 3.

Groupset : The groupset on the 2022 Trek Dual Sport 3 is the biggest improvement to any bike in the line-up. It has a built-in clutch and is equipped with Shimano Deore. That implies that even when pedaling over uneven ground, your chain will remain in place. Any groupset with a clutch has increased dependability and accuracy.

Drivetrain : Another fantastic discovery made during this Trek Dual Sport review is the DS 3’s 1/10 drivetrain. With a 1x drivetrain, shifting is quick and easy, allowing you to keep your attention on the trail. The 11-46T cassette provides a sizable high and low end range as well.

Fork : Given the price of this bike, which would increase with a front fork upgrade, neglecting it is a reasonable choice. With a shifter lockout, the 2021 Dual Sport 4 was discontinued in 2021. Given that the 2022 Dual Sport 3 is still an SR Suntour NEX, which is known to have issues, it would have been nice to include that.

Choosing a new bike is always a tricky job and, when it comes to a choice between the Trek Dual Sport and Trek FX, it’s even harder because both bike ranges are such good value.

So, I’m going to give you a head-to-head side-by-side blow-by-blow account of these two bikes. I’m going to highlight some of the key features of the two and we’ll look at which bike is best for you depending on what riding you do (or plan to).

There are a number of models in both the Dual Sport and FX ranges, so we’ll take a look at the different options and I’ll give you my number one bike from each.

If you need an answer more quickly than that, then I’d recommend the following:

Trek FX 3 Disc – if all your riding is going to be on smooth pavement or road, you like going fast and you’re considering commuting to work by bike Dual Sport 2 – if most of your riding will be on smooth pavement or road, but you’ll also be heading out occasionally for some off-road trails with looser gravel or mud surfaces

If you’ve got a little extra time to dive into the detail, let’s take a look now.

Trek FX review and recommendation

If all of your bike riding is on smooth pavements or roads, then a hybrid bike is the ideal choice for you. Trek are well known for making great quality bikes that are good value for money and their FX range of hybrid bikes is both extensive and very exciting.

There are over a dozen models in the FX range. These cover the full spectrum of different frame shapes (men’s/unisex, women’s and step-through), different frame materials and a wide range of components. This takes the FX all the way from being an entry-level machine with good components and a low price up to a slick carbon-fiber bike that gives many semi-pro road bikes a run for their money.

We’ll take a detailed look at the six main models (FX 1 through 6) and the differences between them, so you can see how they stack up against each other. If you decide that the FX is the bike for you then you’ll be able to use this comparison to choose the model that works best for you and your riding style.

The Trek FX 1 is the base model. Common to all the FX bikes it’s distinguishing feature that sets it apart from the Dual Sport range is the rigid front fork. You may be wondering if you need front suspension on a bike? Here’s the deal. Front suspension will add weight to a bike and up the price, so only go for it if you really need it. Do you need front suspension? Well, if you’ll be doing all of your cycling on smooth pavement or road, then I’d say no you don’t. The job of suspension is to level out the lumps and bumps in the road surface so that your hands, wrists and arms don’t get shaken to pieces. If there are no lumps or bumps, then choose a bike that doesn’t have it.

Moving up a level to the FX 1 Disc and you start getting some tasty features (for not very much extra money as well!) Most importantly, you get disc brakes rather than the linear-pull brakes on the FX 1. Linear pull brakes use brakes that squeeze against the wheel rims to slow you down. They work okay, but can be negatively impacted (i.e. won’t slow you down as fast) when conditions are very wet, or muddy, or your wheel rims are damaged or have a buckle. Disc brakes are (in my opinion) far superior to linear pull as they aren’t affected to the same extent by these factors and have awesome stopping power.

For me, the range really starts getting exciting when you reach the FX 2 Disc . This model brings upgrades to a number of the components and notably the brakes. The mechanical disc brakes of the FX 1 Disc are replaced here with hydraulic disc brakes. Same awesome stopping power and a big reduction in the weight. Check out the bike weights for the FX1 Disc and FX 2 Disc and you’ll a staggering 2lbs cut from the FX 2!

The FX 3 Disc continues the upgrades and here’s where the bike gets transformed from a leisure hybrid to a serious commuting machine. Many upgrades are evident, particularly with the front forks which swap out to carbon fiber (rather than alloy). That gives a twofold benefit. Firstly you have a weight reduction but also carbon fiber has more flex to it than alloy, so will soak up some unevenness in the road surface making for a more pleasurable riding experience. The FX 3 Disc is my recommendation from the FX range based on the components list and price.

FX 4 Disc brings in more upgrades and the one I really like is one that you can’t even see on the pictures. With the FX 4 Disc, Trek have done away with the front derailleur. This is a big trend on modern bikes and gives a bike that is simpler to use (you’ve only got on gear shifter to worry about), easier to maintain (there’s less to go wrong!) and lighter (fewer cogs and, of course, no front derailleur). Oh, and I love the color on this one.

FX Sport 5 and FX Sport 6 take you on a journey into semi-pro road biking, but without the uncomfortable hunched riding position and drop handlebars. These are carbon-fiber frame bikes with a corresponding big drop in the bike weights – check out the FX Sport 6 which is only 20lbs! These models are smooth to use and a delight to pedal on. Go as fast as you want for mile after mile, with a massive smile on your face.

Trek Dual Sport review and recommendation

Combine a light bike with great components, a front suspension fork and all-terrain tires and you get a bike that is at home on smooth pavements as well as on off-road trails. You also get the Trek Dual Sport.

The Dual Sport comes in seven different models, comprising 4 men’s/unisex bikes and 3 women’s specific bikes. Let’s take a look through the four main models of unisex bike (the Dual Sport 1 through 4).

The Dual Sport 1 kicks off the party with a bike that is great fun to ride and will put a smile on your face. Front suspension to smooth out the trails and any bumpy road surfaces. Disc brakes to give you awesome stopping power. Go anywhere all-terrain tires that give you confidence when you’re cornering on loose surfaces.

Dual Sport 2 takes it up a gear with a number of great component upgrades. The best one for me is the locking front suspension fork. Front suspension is only needed when you’re on a lumpy surface. On smooth surfaces it can make for a bouncy ride and will soak up some of the leg power that you want to transfer into spinning those wheels faster. Locking the suspension allows you to have the best of both worlds and it’s a feature that I always choose. That’s why I’ve made the Dual Sport 2 my choice for the top spot in this range.

Dual Sport 3 brings more upgrades, notably the 2×9 drivetrain from Shimano. Smooth performance when you’re grinding up hills or blasting down the other sides.

Which brings us to Dual Sport 4 , the cream of the crop. The lightest of the range with the best set of components, this gives plenty of mid-range mountain bikes a good run for their money…and will totally blow them out of the water on smooth pavement! There are weight reductions all over the place, but particularly with the drivetrain, where the front derailleur is removed entirely. There’s also a remote locking system for the front suspension – a switch on the handlebars makes this a breeze to use when you’re speeding along.

Conclusion – which one to go for?

This is where the rubber finally meets the road (or trail) and you get to hit ‘Buy Now’ at long last!

So, how do you choose? Well, if all your riding is on smooth surfaces, then go for the Trek FX. If you want the best of the best and you like going fast, then choose the FX Sport 6.

If you do most of your riding on smooth surfaces but also like to head out on the trails from time to time, then go with the Trek Dual Sport. A true hybrid, the Dual Sport bikes are excellent on smooth pavement and fully capable of delivering on gravel or muddy trails. Dual Sport 2 is the one I’d go for here.

Idaho. if you don't live there, chances are you're limited to how much time you have to ride there. Us too! That's why we put together the Idaho Bucket List Dual Sport Tour.

Our first observations during the tour were that the roads are well marked throughout Idaho, and there are many interpretive signs along the way to help you learn the history of the area in detail.

The tour begins in McCall, a small inviting resort town on the west side of Idaho. Nice restaurants, all types of accommodations and great views onto Lake Payette. For campers, the state park camping facilities on the north end of town are state-of-the-art. And since day one offers two loop options, there's no need to pack up and leave until day two.

Day one provides two options to visit Idaho's Hells Canyon Scenic Overlooks. The south option takes riders out to Horse Mountain and Sheep Rock, while the north option takes riders to The Seven Devils and Hells Gate overlooks, then provides a back road route back to McCall that includes a don't-pass-this-up stop at a hot spring.

If you're an iron man you can attempt both routes in a single day, or if you have more time you can do them both over two days.

The afternoon portion features a ride to the top of the world as you make your way up Railroad Ridge to 10,400 feet for a look at the 13,000 foot high Chinese Wall. This is the highest elevation you can take a motorcycle to in the State of Idaho, though very few people do it. The road up is a steep two track and includes 100 feet of fist sized rocks to navigate. Only intermediate and experienced riders should attempt this. The best way to navigate these five miles is in first gear at a steady speed of 15 mph. Anything faster will cause excessive shifting which can lead to stalling. Anything slower will cause a tip over if speed is not maintained through the more rugged sections. Eyes up, arms relaxedit's time to rumble!

Then it's north for an overnight stop in Salmon.

The final leg of the day is on the Elk City Highway out to Kamiah (kam-ee-eye). This road is an awesome stretch of pavement that puts US12/Lolo Pass to shame. You'll love it!

The stop at Kamiah provides two nights in the same place so there's no need to pack up to move on until day five.

Interpretive signs along the route tell the story of Lewis & Clark's expedition in this area.

A section west of The Smoking Place Camp is lovingly referred to as the' boulder pit' or 'bike eater'. Smooth granite rock jets out at heights of up to 1.5 feet, making it tricky to navigate. If this makes you uneasy, get off the bike and work as a team with another rider to walk each bike over this section one by one.
