History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

Carnival Panorama refurbishments 2023-2024

Carnival Panorama's first drydock was in 2023 (December 2-23) conducted at Vigor Shipyard in Portland Oregon USA .

Due to propulsion system/machinery issues, CCL canceled six Mexican Riviera cruises (scheduled departures from Long Beach/Los Angeles on Nov 11-18-26, Dec 2-9-16) to allow the drydocking. To fix the issue, Carnival Panorama entered drydock at Vigor Shipyard on December 2nd. The project also included a complete technical overhaul.

Curiously, due to Columbia River's air draft/bridge restrictions (in Portland OR), before the drydocking, the ship remained docked in Victoria BC Canada (November 21-26) where most of its funnel/smokestack was removed.

A major drydock refurbishment project for the ship is currently scheduled for 2024 (September 9-October 12) to be conducted in Singapore (by either Sembcorp or Damen).

Inaugural cruise itineraries 2019-2020

Bookings on Carnival Panorama were opened on March 21, 2018. The "Inaugural Cruise" was offered as a special voyage (3-day mini cruise) from Long Beach to Ensenada Mexico (December 11-14, 2019). Next tables show the ship's maiden voyages as call ports times as prices per person (USD, based on double occupancy Inside Cabin fares).

3-day Inaugural Cruise - prices started from USD 275 pp.

7-day inaugural Mexican Riviera cruise - from USD 680 pp

A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.

Among the ship's standout amenities is the Sky Zone – a trampoline park that offers dodgeball and basketball games, toddler bounce sessions and more. Other unique Carnival amenities found on the ship include a suspended bicycle in the air called SkyRide, a sprawling water park, the Cloud 9 Spa and an open-air recreation area and ropes course.

Dining options on board are just as diverse. In fact, there are more than a dozen dining venues aboard Carnival Panorama, including multiple Guy Fieri eateries, a sushi restaurant, a steakhouse, a seafood eatery and more.

Carnival Panorama offers the line's typical range of accommodation classes (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) along with Family Harbor and Havana staterooms and suites. Havana Cabana Suites feature rain showers and patios equipped with hammock chairs, along with exclusive access to the Havana Bar & Pool. Meanwhile, Family Harbor accommodations are located next to the ship's Family Harbor Lounge and afford guests special perks, such as a free evening of babysitting and complimentary kids meals in the onboard specialty restaurants.

Sailing from Los Angeles , the ship cruises to destinations in Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas . It also departs from Singapore for transpacific voyages.

Upcoming itineraries

The map for this itinerary is not available at this time.

I've sailed on the Carnival Panorama 3 times with more trips planned this year. I keep going back for the cheap prices, fun activities, and great food.

  • I've cruised on the Carnival Panorama three times, which sails year-round to Mexico.
  • On my most recent cruise, I spent $437 for my own interior cabin during a seven-night sailing.
  • I keep coming back for the fun waterslides and wide variety of dining and activity options.

I'm a big fan of cruises and have sailed on Norwegian, Princess, Holland America, and Carnival. But I keep coming back to the budget-friendly Carnival Panorama for its cruise along the Mexican Riviera.

panorama cruise line

I love to cruise , especially from my home base on the west coast to Mexico. I've boarded Norwegian, Princess, and Holland America ships, but my favorite vessel remains the Carnival Panorama.

The Carnival Panorama sails the same itinerary year-round from the port of Long Beach in California to Mexico including stops in Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, and Mazatlán.

And while I've sailed a similar itinerary on Holland and Princess, I find that the Carnival Panorama offers a similar experience for far cheaper and doesn't skimp on activities, dining, and exciting places to visit.

I recently sailed on Panorama with a friend, though I've also cruised solo and with my spouse. Here's why I love this budget-friendly vacation and keep coming back.

I always find the Panorama crew and officers to be warm, friendly, and excited for each sailing.

panorama cruise line

As a frequent cruiser , I really missed sailing when COVID-19 halted most forms of travel.

My first Panorama cruise since the shutdown took place in September 2021 and I got a little teary-eyed when the ship's officers and captain lined the atrium steps to welcome guests back on board.

It was so good to be back on a ship, and I've now sailed 11 more times since then, with a handful of sailings booked in the coming months — including on the Panorama.

I particularly enjoy Carnival's "welcome aboard" deck parties, which are a beloved tradition on embarkation day and I feel the excitement of cruising from the moment I step onboard the Panorama.

In my experience, the Carnival Panorama is consistently affordable, and I think selecting an inside cabin is the best way to save money.

panorama cruise line

I have booked a variety of cabin sizes on the Carnival Panorama, but I find an entry-level inside stateroom offers enough space and amenities, and choosing one is the best way to trim my overall budget.

On my most recent week-long sailing, I vacationed with a friend and we each booked our own separate inside cabins for $304 plus taxes and fees, for a total of just $437, not including alcoholic beverages. That's $62 per night.

While inside rooms start at just 185 square feet — compared to ocean view cabins that start at 230 square feet — I thought it was comfortable. Even when I've shared an inside room on past sailings, the size never bothered me since I spend most of my cruising time outside on the decks and only use my cabin to sleep.

Most cruise lines charge a single supplement for solo travelers but Carnival doesn't.

panorama cruise line

Unlike other cruise lines, there was no single supplement to sail solo in my stateroom. This not only saved me money but precious square footage as my single cabin came with just one bed, as opposed to the usual two. This meant I had more room to spread out and I never felt cramped.

I didn't have ocean views, but I appreciated the fact that I had no outside light shining through to interrupt my afternoon nap.

In addition to the bed, my room came with a large closet, a desk with storage beneath it, a TV, and a bathroom.

Unlike other cruises I've experienced, my Carnival Panorama bathroom always comes stocked with plenty of towels.

panorama cruise line

Like other cruise ships I've experienced, my cabin bathroom was petite, but included a shower stall, a sink with mirrors above, a storage shelf beneath, and so many towels I was never wanting for more.

The water slides are one of my favorite things about Panorama, and what I think sets it apart from other ships.

panorama cruise line

Carnival has so many onboard activities for all ages, but my all-time favorite thing to do on a sunny sea day is slip down the water slides. Panorama has two main slides, both of which I find to be thrilling. There is also a kiddie slide and a splash pad for little ones.

Since there are only two slides for all ages, I've seen it get busy and have had to wait in line, however I enjoy it so much, I never mind.

I'm a beach bum at heart so after a few rides down the slides, I always head to the pool deck.

panorama cruise line

Panorama has two main pools on the Lido deck.

Beach Pool is centrally located and surrounded by lounge chairs and cabanas, including seating within the pool. I enjoy this pool early morning and late evening, when it's a bit quieter without the DJ and impromptu dance parties.

The Tides Pool is at the back of the Lido deck and I find it tends to have a quieter vibe compared to the deck party atmosphere midship. I usually go to this pool for a mid-afternoon dip.

It can be tough to secure a deck chair beside the pool on sea days, but I've never seen a line form to enter the pool or thought it felt overcrowded once inside.

After the pool, I visit SkyRide, a suspended cycling ride that circles the upper decks of Panorama. It's free and a great way to take in panoramic ocean views.

panorama cruise line

My spouse and I also love SkyRide, but I made sure to make time for it when I sailed more recently with my friend, too.

The sit-down cycle follows a suspended track above the upper deck where guests pedal their way along the track at their own pace. I have yet to see a big line form for this free attraction that is offered all day on port days and sea days alike.

One of my other favorite included activities is the ropes course.

panorama cruise line

I'm also a fan of the ropes course on the top deck, another free activity that technically offers great ocean views, but I'm usually more focused on the view of my feet and making sure I don't wobble.

I think it's a fun but challenging course, and while I found it intimidating at first, once I gained my confidence, the ropes earned a spot on my must-do list whenever I'm on the Panorama.

One of the main reasons I keep coming back to Panorama is the great selection of dining included with the base cruise fare.

panorama cruise line

Panorama has a wide variety of complimentary dining for all tastes.

The all-day buffet in Lido Marketplace rotates between roasted turkey to grilled fish and everything in between. The buffet operates morning through late night, so I tend to eat breakfast and dinner here daily.

Vista Restaurant offers fine dining without an upcharge.

panorama cruise line

While I usually opt to eat at quick-serve venues like the buffet because I like to graze, a few times during the week I'll have dinner at the main dining room, Vista Restaurant.

They serve a fine dining menu with even more variety to choose from and I think the kitchen does a particularly nice job with the glazed baked salmon.

Once a week, guests can also enjoy lobster tails for no extra cost. On other cruise lines, lobster is usually a significant upcharge, ranging anywhere from $10-30.

My favorite lunch on Panorama is Guy Fieri's restaurant, Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse. It costs extra for dinner, but is included for lunch on sea days — a secret most cruisers don't know.

panorama cruise line

As one of celebrity chef Guy Fieri's eateries, cruise guests know to go here for pulled pork, beef brisket, sausage, cold salads, and a variety of Fieri's signature sauces. My favorite is the brown sugar and bourbon sauce for sweet-meets-tangy perfection.

In the evening, this barbeque joint has an a la carte upcharge, ranging from $10 for finger foods to $30 for apps and an entree, but seasoned cruisers like myself know this specialty restaurant offers a free lunch spread on sea days. Anyone can take advantage of this and no reservations are required.

I always look forward to espresso drinks from Java Blue Café, which also has a nice selection of pastries and sweets.

panorama cruise line

I'm not much of a dessert person, but every time I sail on Carnival's Panorama, I stop by Java Blue Café for my favorite espresso drinks.

Even without a sweet tooth, I still find myself stopping to stare at the pastry selection, which have an a la carte upcharge, but are modestly-priced for the huge portions, in my opinion.

Expect to pay between $1-$3 for treats. Favorites I've tried include the carrot cake and a dulce de leche cupcake.

I'm always amazed by the fact that Carnival has its own brewery at sea.

panorama cruise line

I'm always delighted to find a brewery in the middle of the ocean. Carnival has breweries onboard its ships, either in Fieri's smokehouse or at the RedFrog Pub & Brewery.

On the Panorama, I have made it a point to try some of their always-available offerings, like amber ales and IPAs. My personal favorite so far has been the limited-edition golden ale made in celebration of Carnival's 50 years at sea.

Beer is included in the Cheers! beverage package, or a la carte starting at $6.50 for a 10-oz glass.

There's so much entertainment and nightlife onboard the Panorama, I'm never bored.

panorama cruise line

Throughout the day, guests will find trivia tournaments, bingo, dance-off competitions, and various live music performances, all included for no extra charge.

My favorite way to spend the evening is in the Liquid Lounge, where three times each week a different stage production includes popular music and a dance team. Dancers and singers perform hits from Stevie Wonder, Adele, Simon & Garfunkel, and other Top 40 selections.

Another favorite nightlife venue of mine is the Panorama Atrium with its rotating roster of musicians. This cocktail space might have a solo musician one hour, a blues guitarist the next, or my personal favorite, the rock violinists who combine pop and classical music.

I particularly love Havana Bar, a cozy club for karaoke or dancing.

panorama cruise line

On the back of the Promenade deck is Havana Bar, a sleek venue where karaoke competitions take place, but I like to visit when the Latin band performs. The dance floor quickly fills for a night of heart-racing beats.

There's no charge to enjoy the band or to sing karaoke, so I pop by randomly when I'm walking in that area of the ship.

But sometimes I just want to chill at the adults-only section of the ship.

panorama cruise line

Panorama has so many great activities night and day, which is why I keep coming back to this cruise ship. But sometimes I want a break from the buzz, and that's when I head to the Serenity deck. This is a quiet place just for adults to escape the crowds and party vibe. Serenity Adult-Only Retreat has tons of lounge chairs, daybeds, cabanas, and secluded hot tubs all free for use night and day. I think it's a great spot to work on my tan or to chill out and watch the sunset. This area is tucked away from the pool deck on its own little upper deck at the front of the ship, so I find it's always free of busy crowds and music, and it's easy to find a space to lounge.

I appreciate all the little things the crew does to delight guests, such as surprising guests one morning of the cruise with towel animals lining the pool deck.

panorama cruise line

I think one of the best surprises during a week onboard Panorama is waking up to find towel animals taking over the pool deck.

Similar to the towel animals room stewards provide in the cabins, crew members set them up throughout the pool deck area on all the chairs to greet the morning crowds.

I always get a kick out of seeing the dozens (hundreds?) of animals set on their sun loungers, and it's also fun to watch as families with kids see the towel animal party for the first time.

I think Panorama is about having as much fun or quiet time as you like, both onboard the ship and while in port.

panorama cruise line

One of the best things about Panorama is how packed the itinerary is for those looking for activities day and night — but knowing it's not necessary to do all the things.

I enjoy pool deck parties and waterslides and joining a trivia challenge, but I also really appreciate taking time out to simply enjoy an ocean view for a few quiet hours on my own.

I also like that the ports of Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, and Mazatlán don't require pricey excursion tickets since there's so much to do within walking distance. While it's possible to spend $30 and up to go snorkeling or take a tour, I haven't found the need for this.

Instead, I walk to the cultural centers, enjoy the beach for free, and simply take in the sights.

Ultimately, the variety and value offered by Carnival's Panorama keeps me coming back for more. I can't wait for my next sailing.

panorama cruise line

Sailing on the Panorama is ideal for me year-round, with sunshine always on offer in the Mexican Riviera.

Between the varied itinerary offerings and ship amenities, time and again I have found that Panorama has something for everyone. It's a special cruise and one I know I'll be back to soon.

We got an early look at Carnival’s first new ship in nearly two years

Gene Sloan

This is a heady week for cruise fans on the West Coast.

In a rare development, the region is becoming the year-round home to the newest, snazziest vessel from cruise giant Carnival , the world's biggest cruise line by number of ships.

Christened on Wednesday in the Los Angeles area by Wheel of Fortune's Vanna White, the 4,008-passenger Carnival Panorama is the first new Carnival ship to be based on the West Coast in two decades. It'll sail weekly to the Mexican Riviera out the Port of Long Beach through at least 2021.

Typically, big North American cruise lines such as Carnival initially base their newest ships at the giant cruise hubs on the East Coast — Miami , for instance, or Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades. The West Coast traditionally has drawn older vessels. But things are changing.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

Carnival Panorama's deployment comes as Norwegian Cruise Line's second-newest ship, the two-year-old Norwegian Joy, begins sailing to Mexico out of the Los Angeles area, too. That said, Norwegian Joy only will remain in the city for a few months during the winter before moving to Seattle to sail to Alaska.

But with the Carnival Panorama's year-round deployment to the Los Angeles area, cruise fans on the West Coast now will be able to experience one of the cruise world's latest and greatest vessels at any time of the year, without getting on a cross-country flight.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

For Carnival regulars, Carnival Panorama will look familiar. As I saw during a short "shakedown" cruise over the weekend in advance of its first regular week-long sailing, Carnival Panorama has roughly the same footprint as the line's last two vessels: Carnival Horizon and Carnival Vista. All three of the ships are part of the same Vista Class-series that began rolling out in 2016.

Still, Carnival Panorama has a few new twists, including the first Sky Zone trampoline park on a cruise ship and Carnival's first onboard cooking classroom. Here's what to expect if you book a voyage.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

The first Sky Zone at sea

Yes, you now can add a trampoline park to the list of things you can find on a Carnival ship. Filling a two-deck-high interior space in the middle of the vessel, Carnival Panorama's Sky Zone is an at-sea version of the 200-plus Sky Zone parks found across the United States, Canada, Mexico and nine other countries.

Located near the ship's tween- and teen-clubrooms, it has two padded trampoline areas where you can jump around, and also take part in games like jousting on a balance beam or shooting baskets while bouncing. There's even trampoline dodgeball and, on one end of the room, a climbing wall augmented with interactive game elements.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

On first sight, I was a little underwhelmed by the space, which is relatively modest in size at about 3,000 square feet. But after tumbling around a bit during a test session with other cruise writers, I was sold . This place is a hoot, in large part because it offers all sorts of interactive silliness like a tug-of-war game where the loser goes flying into a big padded cushion (as I learned the hard way in a faceoff with the guy from CruiseRadio.net ; I did beat the writer from CruiseCritic.com ).

Of course, I'm not the target market for this. Sky Zone clearly is a feature aimed at kids, including the littlest ones. Some of the bouncy attractions aren't super hard core, and that's the point. You can have a wonderful afternoon here playing around with your four-year-old, who will absolutely love it.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

In a nod to the youngest Carnival cruisers, Sky Zone offers one-hour "toddler time" sessions exclusively for children ages six months to 5 years, accompanied by an adult. The fee is $5 per child and $5 per adult. There also are exclusive sessions for children ages six to 14, as well as passengers 15 and older. The latter two sessions are priced at $12 per person, including a pair of Sky Zone socks.

If jumping with the lights on is too ho-hum for you, the space also hosts nighttime, all-ages "blacklight glow parties" where you wear a custom glowing T-shirt as you bounce around. (These sessions cost $18, including the shirt, which you can keep.)

Carnival regulars, take note: The trampoline park fills the space that houses the Imax Theatre on Carnival Horizon and Carnival Vista. So, no Imax film-watching on this ship.

A familiar array of deck-top attractions

Sky Zone isn't the only kid-friendly play area on Carnival Panorama. As is typical for Carnival ships, the top decks of the vessel are covered in family-focused attractions including one of the WaterWorks waterparks that are now standard on Carnival vessels and one of the line's signature SportSquare areas.

The WaterWorks waterpark plays to the family market with two massive waterslides called Kaleido-o-Slide and Twister, and a kiddie splash zone dominated by a 300-gallon dump bucket known as the PowerDrencher. While not quite as over-the-top as the recently unveiled Blaster waterslide on Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas (now the longest waterslide on a cruise ship), the 455-foot-long Kaleido-o-Slide definitely ranks among the top waterslides at sea .

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Like the WaterWorks area, the SportSquare on Carnival Panorama will be familiar to Carnival aficionados. It's home to a suspended-in-the-air, pedal-powered SkyRide (something that first debuted in 2016 on Carnival Vista and is now on three ships), a suspended-in-the-air ropes course, a basketball court, miniature golf, miniature bowling, ping pong tables and other outdoor games.

The top decks of Carnival Panorama also have two pool areas and an adults-only Serenity retreat area with padded loungers, day beds, hot tubs and a full bar. In short, there's a ton to do up top and, unlike on some lines, it's all open to passengers at no extra charge. Carnival has (thankfully, in my opinion) resisted the trend of big-ship operators carving out whole sections of deck-top areas for the exclusive use of passengers staying in suites or willing to pay hefty access fees.

Lively, engaging entertainment

If you've booked Carnival Panorama for a quiet getaway, you've made a terrible mistake. There's nothing quiet about this ship, as is the Carnival way. The overall vibe is "loud and lively," with an interior area that revolves around a bustling bar zone and casino; live musicians seemingly playing around every corner; and lots of interactive (and noisy) activities.

Audience participation is a big part of the Carnival shtick, and silliness reigns. On my short shakedown cruise , the lounge entertainment included such audience-engaging inanity as an embarrass-your-wife-on-stage "Love and Marriage Show" and often hilarious karaoke sessions.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Up by the pool, the interactive hijinks got even wilder with prime sunning hours interrupted by such larks as a raucous poolside dance-a-thon and a hairy chest contest. Yes, Carnival is that line. Both drew standing-room-only, hooting-and-hollering crowds.

This is all par for the course at Carnival. If the above sounds like your worst cruising nightmare, Carnival is not the line for you . On the flipside, many vacationers love this, and it isn't by accident that Carnival now carries one out of every five cruisers worldwide.

Of note, Carnival Panorama's main theater, the 930-seat Liquid Lounge, houses two new-for-Carnival production shows, Broadway Beats and Rock Revolution. Both are old school cruise ship shows involving a dozen or more performers dancing around to a continuous blast of ever-changing tunes, with no storyline to speak of. They're a far cry from the more sophisticated production shows rolling out in recent years in main showrooms on Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean ships .

Carnival's first cooking classroom

The cooking-class craze that began taking off a few years ago on high-end ships finally has spread to the most mass-market of lines – and in no small way.

Located on Deck 4 not far from Carnival Panorama's main restaurants, Carnival's first-ever cooking classroom, dubbed Carnival Kitchen, is a seriously tricked out venue complete with nine state-of-the-art, marbled granite cooking stations for two and a dedicated dining area.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

The space will be home to more than a dozen distinct classes where you can learn to make such classic Carnival dishes as a warm chocolate melting cake. There also will be courses in sushi rolling, pizza making and pie baking. Classes will last one to two hours and cost $30 to $59 per person.

I got to sit in on the very first class to be held in the room, a lesson in apple pie making, and even helped with a little stirring. I found the instruction simple enough, so even the most cooking-challenged traveler can keep up. The flipside is that serious amateur chefs may find it a bit basic (usually the case with cruise ship cooking classrooms).

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

The new Carnival Kitchen's dining area will be used in the evenings for demonstration classes that include a themed dinner. This effectively gives Carnival Panorama one more restaurant than exists on the other ships in the Vista Class — and a very exclusive and intimate one at that. As with regular classes during the day, the evening class-and-dinner experience will be limited to 18 people at a time.

Signature Carnival restaurants

Other than the addition of Carnival Kitchen, the array of dining options on Carnival Panorama is identical to what's found on the line's last new ship, Carnival Horizon.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

That includes two large main restaurants and a casual buffet that are included in the fare, as well as versions of Carnival's signature extra-charge steakhouse, Fahrenheit 555, and Italian-serving Cucina del Capitano (if you're a Carnival fan, you know this as the place where waiters sing and dance between courses). The latter two venues have flat fees of $38 and $15 per person, respectively.

The ship also has one of Carnival's a la carte Bonsai sushi restaurants (now on 10 ships) and the line's fourth Ji Ji Asian Kitchen ($15 per person). Other extra-charge locations include two venues that are only making their second appearance on Carnival ships: Bonsai Teppanyaki (priced at a flat $32 per person) and the a la carte Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, a venue created in partnership with The Food Network's Guy Fieri. Both outlets debuted in 2018 on Carnival Horizon.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

The Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, notably, has its very own in-house brewery you can see behind glass walls — something still relatively rare on cruise ships. It makes Carnival's house beers including Parched Pig West Coast IPA and Parched Pig Toasted Amber, not just for the Pig & Anchor but for several other drinking venues around the ship.

The quality of the food (and drink) on Carnival ships always surprises me, given the budget pricing of the brand, and Carnival Panorama is no exception. Despite being one of the industry's lowest-cost operators, Carnival manages to pull off one of the best steakhouses at sea in Fahrenheit 555, and even the no-extra-charge main restaurants get the basics right.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Carnival ships, including Carnival Panorama, also have what may be the two best quick-serve poolside dining venues at sea: The BlueIguana Cantina and Guy's Burger Joint. BlueIguana is a Carnival knock-off of Chipotle with yummy made-to-order burritos and tacos. Created in partnership with Guy Fieri, Guy's Burger Joint offers burgers that beat anything you'll find around the pool on other mass-market ships and even most luxury vessels. Why can't other cruise lines get this sort of stuff right?

A crowded ship

As is typical for Carnival ships, Carnival Panorama has a bit of a cramped feel — at least compared to other big new ships operated by the likes of Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean.

Carnival has packed 2,004 cabins onto the vessel, which measures about 133,500 gross register tons (a measurement of interior space). That's 37 more cabins than the first vessel in the Vista Class series and far more cabins per gross register ton than you'll see on other big new vessels such as Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Encore and Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas .

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Indeed, the "space ratio" of Carnival Panorama (a measure of the amount of interior space available per passenger) only is around 33. The space ratio of Norwegian Encore, by contrast, is around 42. The space ratio of Symphony of the Seas is around 41.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

One of the ways Carnival keeps its prices low (and they truly are low; Carnival is a top choice for budget-conscious cruisers) is by jamming a lot of people on its ships. So, at one level, it's hard to complain about this. But I definitely noticed the crowds on the shakedown sailing.

Bottom line

With its straight-out-of-the-shipyard newness, wide array of fun-focused deck-top attractions and many interior restaurants, bars and showrooms, Carnival Panorama is the new ship-to-beat in the year-round cruise market in Southern California — at least for those who like big, bustling megaships .

While a few other relatively new megaships (such as Norwegian Joy) make an appearance in the area each year, they typically only stay for a few weeks or months while on their way to other destinations such as Alaska .

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

That said, Carnival Panorama still is a Carnival ship. If you haven't liked Carnival vessels in the past, you're not going to suddenly fall in love with this one, even if you're a West Coaster looking for something new and snazzy out of the Los Angeles area.

The self-described "Fun Ship" line has a huge following, but it's not for everyone. This is a line that is all about fun in a very brash way, with entertainment that at times is as low brow as the line is low-cost.

What it costs

In general, Carnival ships are among the most affordable at sea , and Carnival Panorama is no exception. The vessel will be operating seven-night voyages to the Mexican Riviera out of Long Beach that start at $474 per person, not including taxes and fees of $116.64. That works out to just $84 per night per person with taxes and fees for a package that includes your lodging, transportation and meals.

Carnival Panorama also will operate a single six-night sailing and a single eight-night sailing to Mexico out of Long Beach over the 2021 holiday period that start at $609 and $1,039 per person, respectively.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Keep in mind that, as is typical for cruises, the starting fares above are "based on double occupancy," which means pricing is based on two people staying in a cabin, each paying their own fare. A single traveler occupying a cabin will pay more.

The fares above also are for the least-expensive, windowless "interior" cabins. There are quite a few cabin categories on Carnival ships, including bigger balcony cabins and suites, at a range of price points. In addition, pricing for cruises fluctuates week-by-week depending on demand, just as it does with flights. The lowest fares are available during off-season months such as September. You'll pay more for more popular times of the year.

(Photo by Gene Sloan/The Points Guy)

Fares also don't include extra charges you ring up on board. While meals at several onboard restaurants are included in the fare, some higher-end venues on Carnival Panorama come with an extra charge. Just like at most land resorts, you'll also pay extra for drinks. Most beers at Carnival Panorama bars run from $6.25 to $6.75, while wine starts at $8 per glass ($28 for the least expensive bottle).

One other thing for which you'll need to budget is the automatic gratuity charge that Carnival adds to bills, which runs $13.99 per person, per day for most cabins. Suite passengers pay more.

(Editor's note: TPG always tries to pay full price for travel its staff takes and usually doesn't inform companies in advance of our plans to review. But there are times when — especially with cruise lines — we need to work with travel providers to gain early access to products before they go into regular service. To attend this three-night "shakedown" sailing of Carnival Panorama, which came in advance of the ship beginning its regular weekly schedule of seven-night trips, TPG paid a negotiated $199 rate to be on board. This is roughly in line with the starting rates of the ship on a per person, per day basis. TPG also paid all costs to get to and from the vessel.)

Carnival Firenze cruise ship arrives at new home in Long Beach

The Long Beach Cruise Terminal has a new resident — a 1000-foot-long, 5,200-guest cruise ship by the name of Firenze .

The Carnival cruise ship arrived Tuesday after traveling from Europe to Long Beach , which will be its permanent home base as it sails year-round, offering multi-day cruises to the Mexican Riviera.

The Firenze is an Italian-inspired ship that is named after the city of Florence. It was originally part of a fleet of cruise ships belonging to Costa Cruises, a popular cruise line in Italy, and a subsidiary of Carnival.

It was built and delivered to Costa Cruises in December 2020, but in June 2022 , it was announced Firenze would be coming stateside as part of the company’s “ Costa by Carnival ” initiative, alongside its sister ship, Carnival Venezia, which calls New York City home.

Both cruise ships feature Italian-themed restaurants, bars and entertainment, and unique Italian-inspired design and architecture.

It’s the third Carnival cruise ship to sail from Long Beach to Baja Mexico and the Mexican Riviera, joining the Carnival Panorama and Radiance ships. Firenze is the largest of the three and has the highest maximum passenger capacity of more than 6,500 combined guests and crew.

The ship is over 323 meters long with 135,300 gross tonnage, a measurement of a ship’s total internal volume, and has more than 2,100 passenger cabins, according to its  specification page .

Firenze’s maiden voyage —from Long Beach, at least — will take place on Thursday, with an “Italian-inspired” inaugural event and naming celebration being held the day before at the Carnival Cruise Terminal.

Carnival Cruise Line executives will be on hand, as well as actor Jonathan Bennett, known for several holiday romance films and his portrayal of Aaron Samuels in the classic teen-comedy “Mean Girls.”

Bennett is a longtime Carnival cruiser and even honeymooned on one of its ships, Carnival officials said. He sailed the first voyage of Venezia last May and has been given the unofficial title of Firenze’s “godfather.”

Firenze will offer several different itinerary options, with cruises ranging from three-day quick tips to seven-day excursions.

Cruises can be reserved by phone or online at  carnival.com .
