Paula Fuga sings “Tribute to Aretha Franklin,” plans a tour with award-winning album

paula fuga tour 2022

Hawaiian singer-songwriter Paula Fuga said she’s always been drawn to “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin’s personality and music and looks forward to her “Tribute to Aretha Franklin” concert at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Aug. 13.

“I love that she was a voice for female empowerment,” Fuga said.

“I grew up singing along to her music…She was magical, and I carry her love and light in my heart…” The Nā Hōkū Hanohano winner for “Female Vocalist of the Year” in 2021, Fuga will be accompanied by a 10-piece band in the tribute concert, including a three-piece horn section and three of her favorite Hawai’i vocalists — Keilana Mokulehua, Maile and Lana Kei.

“Paula Fuga’s Tribute to Aretha Franklin,” presented by Subaru Hawaiʻi, starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater.

Fuga, born in the rural Hawaiian community of Waimanalo, has a soulful voice and made her own strides toward becoming Hawaiʻi’s woman of soul with her song “Rain On Sunday,” also the title of her 2021 award-winning album.

Both Franklin and Fuga sang in church choirs.

Fuga recently sang with Jack Johnson in a “Benefit for the Kōkua Hawai’i Foundation” featuring Tavana and Mike Love. She has also sung with Ben Harper, and Ziggy Marley.

Fuga embarks on her Mainland tour the weekend after the Maui show.

Fuga said she was able to witness Aretha Franklin performing in a show in 2017, about a year before Aretha passed. Fuga said she’s honored to share the songs sung by Franklin.

“The two Aretha Franklin songs I love most are “Daydreaming” and “All the Kings Horses.” I love them because she actually wrote them and to me they are the most interesting songs in terms of musical arrangement, harmonies and lyrics,” Fuga said. “They are more complex than most of her songs and I love it.”

“She possesses an uncommonly gorgeous voice and holds notes that wrap around a listener like a mother’s embrace.” — Variety

“Paula has an amazing strong voice that is melodic and sweet and paints the picture of island life” – AU Review

“Hawaiian Queen of Soul” — Maui News

Exquisite vocals, powerful lyrics and gorgeous melodies have earned Paula widespread critical praise and made her one of the most sought-after live performers in Hawai‘i. She is a songwriter of depth and passion, praised for her intense emotion with a personal style that resonates deeply with audiences around the world. It is almost impossible to peg her into a single music genre. With a beautiful disposition, sweet island vibes, R&B, and Jawaiian roots reggae in the mix, her music has been called modern Hawaiian soul.

Her first release Lilikoi earned her the Na Hoku Award (Hawai‘i’s “Grammy”) for Most Promising Artist of the Year. Her music has continued to blend tradition, innovation, and originality, featuring soul, reggae, and jazz–infused melodies, seamlessly mixing English and Hawaiian lyrics, with Paula on ‘ukulele and backed by a 2-3 piece band.  She was honored in 2022 with Nā Hōku Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year along with Contemporary Album of the Year for her recent release Rain on Sunday .

In 2021, she signed with Jack Johnson’s Brushfire record label, and released her first album under that label Rain On Sunday , featuring her single with Johnson and Ben Harper If Ever .

She has toured extensively with Jack Johnson, and recorded with reggae royalty Ziggy Marley – both are featured on her EP release Misery’s End. Paula dedicates much of herself inspiring the youth in Hawai’i and across the world, sharing her story of perseverance and hope. In 2019, she was selected for a  coveted Juried Showcase spot at the Western Arts Alliance (WAA) conference.

Always expanding her professional horizons, in 2023 Paula made her theatrical stage debut as Fairy Godmother in Cinderella at Honolulu’s historic Diamond Head Theatre and launched her production company Mana Wahine Productions.

At an early age, she faced the vulnerabilities of living homeless in Hawai‘i, seeing the destruction caused by drugs and violence. In middle school, Fuga began with poetry as a platform to express her experiences, and blossomed into a songwriter when she began playing ‘ukulele in high school. She is one of four performers in Hawai‘i (with Jake Shimabukuro, John Cruz, and Alfre Woodard) in the Turnaround Arts program of the Hawaii Arts Alliance in partnership with Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

Says Paula: “We want to take Hawaii to the world, show the aloha spirit to the world, loving and welcoming and inviting. We’re all connected by one ocean, even though it has many names, we’re all on this one earth.”

Paula Fuga embraces evolution, shaped by dreams and life lessons

‘Growing” is a great title for a record album or a concert tour, but for Paula Fuga it’s a way of life. Growing is what she is doing, personally and professionally, as an entertainer, recording artist and Polynesian businesswoman.

“I’m growing. I’m learning. I am learning from my mistakes and making better decisions. It’s just a beautiful period of time,” Fuga said during a light breakfast of fruit slices and toast at the ‘Alohilani Resort in Waikiki.

“I experienced exponential growth last year with all the things that I was a part of. Opening for Jack Johnson at the Waikiki Shell in that slot right before him instead of the first slot of the day, that was big growth for me. To play at Maui Arts & Cultural Center and headline the MACC. … That was a huge period of growth for me as well. I know now that I can do anything. If I want to play at any venue, I can book that venue and plan my own concert there, and I love that feeling. I love having this feeling of empowerment.”

Fuga’s evolution continues this week in Waikiki with shows on Saturday and Aug. 13 at the Blue Note Hawaii. In September, she departs on her “Aurora Tour” with her band — Brad Watanabe (bass) and Ethan Capone (keyboards). They’ll play one night at Global Roots Sonoma at Rohnert Park, Calif., followed by three shows in Alaska. Fuga had visited Alaska before, but this will be the first time she’ll perform there.

“I was supposed to go and visit the native community in Alaska, and because of the pandemic it got canceled, so this is sort of like a makeup trip, and I’m just really excited. I haven’t been there for many years, and it’s always so nice to connect with a native community and share (cultures).”

She’s also working on her first movie.

“I had this movie in my head for 20-something years. And in 2021, I said, ‘Hey, this is the year I put this movie in writing.’ I found a writing partner who helped me do research, helped me gather my thoughts, created bullets of my timeline and my story.” Fuga realized when the script was finished that she didn’t know anything about filmmaking, so she assembled a team of people who did: Hawaii film industry veterans Gerard Elmore, Christopher Kahunahana and Mitchel Merrick.

“The story (of the movie) is pretty amazing,” Elmore said. “We were doing a commercial with Paula for Subaru, and we invited her to the (Honolulu International) film festival to see some of ’Ohina shorts that were happening there. She saw two of them, and then we talked story two days later and she said she was inspired to make her own film.”

“We assembled a team and we assembled the budget. … and it’s from dream to action in two years, (which is) really quickly.”

“If you know her long enough, she talks about magic,” Elmore added. “She’s magic, and if she can think it and dream it, it will happen.”

Another key to Fuga’s long-term growth is her ability to reflect on what’s important, and act accordingly. Her debut album, “Lilikoi,” was a finalist in several categories at the 2007 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, and she was surprised and disappointed when the producers of the show did not invite her to perform.

She set the disappointment aside and focused instead on her gratitude for her supporters, making lei for the 20 people who bought tickets to the show. (Incidentally, she won a Hoku for most promising artist that night.)

In any setting and situation, Fuga adapts gracefully when circumstances require. She didn’t have any “girly-looking shoes” in 2010 when she went to the White House with a group celebrating Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month, so she wore slippers as usual — big slippers.

“(I) never had sandals, I was wearing oversized OluKai slippers because I used to get them big in case I stubbed my toe. I’m a size 11, but I was wearing like a size 12 or 13 slipper, and I actually stepped on Barack Obama’s feet when I went to go hug him. My big slippers stepped on his big foot. He was cool about it. He said, ‘Don’t worry about it.’ ”

Fuga’s natural authenticity doesn’t surprise Native Hawaiian musician Kawika Kahiapo. He said it’s who she is. Speaking as a friend and mentor for almost two decades, Kahiapo described Fuga’s life as “one of triumphs” going all the way back to her childhood.

“She was one of the (homeless) families on the beach in Waimanalo years ago getting arrested. Anyone who knows her backstory knows that she took adversity by the horns and kicked it in the ass,” he said. “Now that she’s getting some prominence, I think her narrative is that she wants to continue to give back.”

Kahiapo said Fuga was one of the first to answer the call for local entertainers to play at Iam Tongi’s American Idol concert at the Turtle Bay Resort in May. Fuga said she “just wanted to make sure (Tongi) had the proper homecoming, because he’s from the North Shore, he’s from Kahuku, and he should have his event in Turtle Bay.”

“After I got involved to help with it, Kawika hit me up and asked me to play. I was like, OK, but I didn’t want any of the spotlight. This is about young Iam, and his success in ‘American Idol,’ and just being an amazing role model for our kids here in the islands. Here, if you have a dream, you can do it, no matter what it is … no matter what you look like, no matter how you start out in life. I love that.”

Multi-instrumentalist Tavana said watching Fuga take her music to national audiences made him proud.

“Watching her over the years be able to tour with Jack (Johnson) has been great because obviously a lot of us local kids, we don’t really get a chance to shine in that way. To be able to see her have that opportunity was a really a proud moment, (for me) as a Polynesian man to see a Polynesian woman be able to experience some of that top-shelf performing on that kind of a platform is just so wonderful. It seems that she’s just slowly been going up and up and up and hasn’t really stopped.”

In those fellow musicians, Fuga has powerful allies as she navigates an industry where female entertainers can be judged as much on looks as on their talent.

“There’s a double standard when it comes to men and women in the entertainment industry,” she said. “Men are more accepted when they’re big, when they’re overweight, and it kind of blows my mind. That’s one definite thing I notice.”

Looking forward to the Blue Note this weekend, Fuga plans to have a “confessional” booth set up in the gift shop. Fans can leave private messages for her about their personal concerns and life challenges, topics that can be difficult to share at a public meet-and-greet.

“It’s always a struggle to share time to spend with fans. Sometimes they have to leave right when the show ends, before I come out to meet and greet them,” she said.

But to those who miss such an opportunity, she says, leave your contact information and she will reply.

Looking long term, Fuga is committed to focusing on her health and wellness.

“I want to continue to grow and heal and become the best possible version of myself. I never really did go full throttle and focus on my health and well-being, so this period of my life is, I know how important it is. I want to be mobile for the rest of my life. I want to be healthy, and I want to have a strong body because there’s a lot of things I want to accomplish in life. I’m not done living my life to the fullest.”

paula fuga tour 2022

Praised for her originality in song composition and ability to stir the deepest emotions with spellbinding and soulful vocals, Paula Fuga has established herself as one of Hawai’i’s most respected live performers.

At an early age, she faced the vulnerabilities of living homeless on the beach and seeing the destruction of drugs and violence. Despite having overcome such adversity quite successfully, she is living her career with much gratitude and humility. Fuga relentlessly strives to inspire youth across the world, sharing her story of perseverance and hope. She makes countless efforts to participate in various community projects focusing on protecting the environment and spreading the fundamental values of her native Hawaiian culture. Fuga is an artist on a mission and music is her vehicle.

Starting off as a poet, she bloomed into a songwriter when she began playing the ukulele in High School, studying under master instructor Roy Sakuma. Upon the release of her debut Album Lilikoi,  Fuga was awarded the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Most Promising Artist.

Since the release of her latest recording, the EP “Misery’s End,” which featured guest appearances by Ziggy Marley and Jack Johnson, she has headlined the Alma Surf Festival in Sao Paolo, Brazil, performed with Jack at Madison Square Garden and the Sydney Opera House Forecourt.  She was featured on the song “Love Will Find a Way” with Nahko Bear and Trevor Hall for the album of her life long collaborator and guitarist, the musical genius Mike Love.  She was honored to be a part of the 52nd Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, performing alongside the Hawaiian cultural icon, Kaumakaiwa Kanakaole for the winning group, Hula Halau O Kamuela.  She is among distinguished artists honored to perform for the President, having been invited for the 3rd time to the White House in Washington, DC.

Currently, Fuga continues to widen her fan base as she embraces different genres of music with her signature entrancing vocals. She plans to keep traveling the world as she lives out her dream and shares her gift with a message of love.

“Music is my first love. Love is my first language.” – Paula Fuga

She is one of four performers in Hawai‘i (with Jake Shimabukuro, John Cruz, and Alfre Woodard) in the Turnaround Arts program of the Hawaii Arts Alliance in partnership with Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

She has toured extensively with Jack Johnson, and recorded with reggae royalty Ziggy Marley – both are featured on her EP release Misery’s End. Paula dedicates much of herself inspiring the youth across the world, sharing her story of perseverance and hope. She is an artist on a mission and music is her vehicle. In 2019, she was selected for a  coveted Juried Showcase spot at the Western Arts Alliance (WAA) conference. During the pandemic, Paula focused her attention on her much-anticipated second full-length album, Rain on Sunday, which is her debut album on Jack Johnson’s own Brushfire Records and Republic Records, due for a June 2021 release.

Says Paula: “We want to take Hawaii to the world, show the aloha spirit to the world, loving and welcoming and inviting. We’re all connected by one ocean, even though it has many names, we’re all on this one earth.”

Doc10 Unveils Its Lineup, Led by Chris Smith’s ‘Devo’ Movie (EXCLUSIVE)

devo documentary sundance film festival

Chris Smith ‘s “Devo” will open the ninth edition of Chicago’s Doc10 documentary film festival on May 2.

The film, which premiered at Sundance 2024, charts the life of the art-movement-turned-band Devo from Akron, Ohio, through archival footage of the band and candid sit-down interviews with band members. Smith (“American Movie,” “Tiger King”) follows the band on their journey from Dadaist, Kent State radicals to unlikely icons of 1980s MTV. Currently celebrating their 50 years of De-Evolution Tour, Devo band members will join Doc10 in a live, virtual Q&A moderated by WXRT’s Marty Lennartz.

In addition to “Devo” Doc10 will screen: Lea Glob’s “Apalonia Apalonia,” Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine’s “Copa ’71,” Angela Patton and Natalie Rae’s “Daughters,” Lana Wilson’s “Look Into My Eyes,” Johan Grimonprez’s “Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat,” Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” Stephen Maing and Brett Story’s “Union,” plus Jesse Moss and Tony Gerber’s “War Game.”

The 2024 edition of Doc10 kicked off on March 27 with an early festival preview screening of Amanda McBaine and Moss’ Apple Original docu “Girls State,” which premiered at Sundance in January.

The festival will also feature a special bonus screening of “Porcelain War,” about three Ukrainian artists who find inspiration and beauty as they defend their culture and their country during the Russian invasion of their country. Winner of this year’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize for Documentary, the docu is part of a Doc10’s Spotlight on Ukraine special screening and discussion.

Of the 11 docus heading to the festival this year, nine made their world premieres at Sundance 2024.

Glob’s “Apalonia Apalonia” premiered in 2022 at IDFA and was shortlisted for for an Oscar this year. Although the film has distribution via Grasshopper Film, it has not been shown at a theater in Chicago.

“I like a mix,” says Kaufman. “Both films that were highly acclaimed from the last year, but also those that people are going be also talking about at the end of the year.”

“War Game” will serve as the festival’s closing night film. A docu-thriller chronicling a “war game” simulation that took place in 2023 with prominent experts role-playing parts in a scenario inspired by the Jan. 6 Capitol Riots, will also feature a post-screening panel conversation that will include directors Moss and Gerber in addition to film subjects Steve Bullock (former governor of Montana), Heidi Heitkamp (former Senator of North Dakota), retired Major General Linda Singh, and National Security expert Elizabeth Neumann.

“One of this year’s main themes is perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable forces, and a yearning to fight for one’s dignity and self-worth,” says Kaufman.

Doc10 co-founder Steve Cohen adds: “The wide range of themes in this year’s Doc10 lineup is what makes for truly great nonfiction cinema. Relive lost moments of sports history, delve into the world of the extrasensory, explore the eccentricity of ‘Devo,’ be inspired by the story of Christopher Reeve. And of course, we end with a suspense-filled political thriller depicting just what’s at stake in this critical election year.”

Of the 80 films the fest has programmed since 2016, 26 have been shortlisted or nominated for an Academy Award. “Navalny,” a 2022 selection, was the third Doc10 film to win the Oscar for best documentary feature, following “Summer of Soul” (2021) and “American Factory” (2020).

This year’s festival will be presented at two Chicago venues, the Davis Theater and the Gene Siskel Film Center. All directors are scheduled to attend the festival in-person or virtually.
