This summer saw Gabriel honoured with the Silver Clef award for his outstanding contribution to music.

He said of the accolade: “I’m delighted to receive the O2 Silver Clef award. I’ve always believed the role of music goes way beyond entertainment, and I’m convinced that sound and light have a critical role to play in therapies and healing in the future.

"It’s wonderful to see Nordoff Robbins using music to reach young people, who otherwise would feel much more isolated and vulnerable, and giving them a means of expressing their emotions."

peter gabriel european tour dates

Peter Gabriel has today announced a UK and European tour for 2023.

The man himself said “It’s been a while and I am now surrounded by a whole lot of new songs and am excited to be taking them out on the road for a spin. Look forward to seeing you out there.”

Those ‘new songs’ are from his forthcoming album i/o and as well as this new material, i/o The Tour will see PG delving into his amazing back catalogue of music, with “hits, fan favourites and the unexpected”.

Gabriel will be joined by regular band-mates Tony Levin, David Rhodes and Manu Katché. The 22 shows in Europe will kick off in Krakow, Poland on 18 May 2023, with dates in Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, and the UK before wrapping in Dublin, Ireland on 25 June 2023. The tour will then continue in North America in the late summer/fautumn (dates to follow).

There is no further information on the i/o  album right now, other than the title and the fact that it’s confirmed!

Tickets for i/o The Tour go on sale on Friday 11 November at 9am (O2 priority starts tomorrow at 9am).

18 album covers that look similar to other album covers, including genesis:, scott weiland – ‘12 bar blues’ (1998).

The late-great Stone Temple Pilots singer's debut solo album features a blue-tinged image of Scott on the cover.

John Coltrane – ‘Blue Train’ (1958)

From the image to the font, Scott Weiland's '12 Bar Blues' is a homage to jazz legend John Coltrane's landmark 'Blue Train' album from 40 years earlier.

Anthrax – ‘Kings Among Scotland’ (2018)

The thrash metallers' 2018 live album 'Kings Among Scotland', which captures their 2017 show at Glasgow's Barrowland Ballroom, came with this visually striking animated sleeve.

Kiss - ‘Rock and Roll Over’ (1976)

The Anthrax sleeve is an overt parody of the aesthetically vibrant animated cover to Kiss's fifth studio album 'Rock and Roll Over'.

The Clash - ‘London Calling’ (1979)

The seminal cover to The Clash's 'London Calling' features a black-and-white image of bassist Paul Simonon smashing his Fender Precision Bass at the Palladium in New York City. It was created by designer Ray Lowry.

Elvis Presley - ‘Elvis Presley’ (1956)

With its pink and green lettering and black-and-white photo, 'London Calling' pays direct homage to Elvis Presley's self-titled debut album from 23 years earlier.

Iron Maiden - ‘Powerslave’ (1984)

The heavy metal legends' long-term artist Derek Riggs designed the Ancient Egyptian themed cover to their fifth album 'Powerslave.' Truly one of the best sleeves in metal history.

Earth, Wind & Fire - ‘All n’ All’ (1977)

Visually, Iron Maiden's 'Powerslave' is extremely similar to Earth, Wind & Fire's album 'All n' All' from seven years earlier. Maiden artist Derek Riggs has dismissed the idea he copied the funk band, saying: "Somebody somewhere said it was inspired by an Earth Wind & Fire cover, but that's just crap. Because of the song Bruce wrote it had to be Egyptian, so I went back to the tomb of Rameses 2 and copied the idea from that (just like Earth, Wind & Fire did) but mine is better. It's also got a hieroglyph Micky mouse in the bottom left corner. Ha! Earth Wind and Fire don't have a Mickey Mouse. Obviously inferior." Well said, Derek!

Mötley Crüe – ‘Too Fast for Love’ (1981)

The artwork to Mötley Crüe's debut album features a close-up of a rock star's crotch area.

The Rolling Stones - ‘Sticky Fingers’ (1971)

Mötley Crüe's 'Too Fast for Love' is, of course, a tribute to The Rolling Stones' infamous 'Sticky Fingers artwork from a decade earlier. Created by legendary artist Andy Warhol, the visible outline of the model's manhood caused quite a stir upon the album's release 49 years ago.

Deep Purple – ‘Deep Purple’ (1969)

The dark and macabre cover artwork to 1969's self-titled 'Deep Purple' is adorned with the right-hand painting from Hieronymus Bosch's 15th Century triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights. It depicts the horrors of hell.

Pearls Before Swine - ‘One Nation Underground’ (1967)

Deep Purple weren't the first band to use The Garden of Earthly Delights on their album sleeve – Floridian psychedelic folk act Pearls Before Swine used a slightly different part of the painting for their 1967 debut album 'One Nation Underground'.

Manowar - ‘Fighting the World’ (1987)

Manowar enlisted fantasy artist Ken Kelly to create the 'Fighting the World' sleeve.

Kiss - ‘Destroyer’ (1976)

The 'Destroyer' cover art was also designed by Ken Kelly and features Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss standing atop some rubble with destroyed buildings in the background.

Led Zeppelin – ‘Physical Graffiti’ (1975)

Led Zeppelin's iconic 'Physical Graffiti' depicts two side-by-side tenement buildings located at 96 and 98 St. Mark's Place in New York's East Village. JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, astronaut Neil Armstrong, Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, King Kong, the Virgin Mary, Judy Garland and Led Zeppelin themselves are among the faces peering out of the windows.

Jose Feliciano - ‘Compartments’ (1973)

The concept for Led Zeppelin's 'Physical Grafitti' cover was allegedly inspired by the sleeve on Puerto Rican guitarist Jose Feliciano's 1973 album 'Compartments', which features different faces peering out of windows.

Genesis – ‘Land of Confusion’ (1986)

Just like the hilarious video, Genesis' 'Land of Confusion' single artwork features Spitting Image incarnations of Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford.

The Beatles - ‘With The Beatles’ (1963)

Genesis' 'Land of Confusion' is a hilarious pastiche of the artwork on The Beatles' second studio album 'With The Beatles.'

The Who – ‘The Who Sings My Generation’ (1966)

The US edition of The Who's debut album 'My Generation' not only featured a different title and track list but also alternative artwork of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon stood in front of the Big Ben clock tower.

The Rockin’ Berries – ‘In Town’ (1964)

Two years before The Who's 'The Who Sings My Generation', Birmingham beat group The Rockin' Berries released their debut album 'In Town', which also featured an image of the band standing in front of the Big Ben clock tower against a blue sky. A minor hit, the album dented the UK album chart at no.15.

Tom Waits ‘The Heart of Saturday Night’ (1974)

Gravelly voiced singer Tom Waits' second album features an illustration of a tired Waits being observed by a blonde haired woman as he exits a neon-lit cocktail lounge late at night.

Frank Sinatra ‘In the Wee Small Hours’ (1955)

Tom Waits' 'The Heart of Saturday Night' is based on 'In the Wee Small Hours' by Frank Sinatra, which depicts the singer on an eerie and deserted street awash in blue-tinged streetlights. Tom Waits listed 'In the Wee Small Hours' as his favourite album of all time in a 2005 interview with The Guardian.

The Mothers of Invention - ‘We're Only In It for the Money’ (1968)

Frank Zappa's art director Cal Schenkel and Jerry Schatzberg photographed a collage for the 'We're Only In It for the Money' album cover that directly parodied The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', which was released a year earlier. Zappa's good mate Jimi Hendrix appears on the sleeve on the right hand side where the wax sculpture of Sonny Liston appears on The Beatles' sleeve. Much to Zappa's dismay, Capitol Records issued the album with an alternate photograph and the Beatles parody was demoted to the inside cover.

The Beatles – ‘Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’ (1967)

Here's the iconic sleeve to The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' designed by pop artists Peter Blake and Jann Haworth.

Lordi - ‘Beast Loose In Paradise’ (2008)

The monstrous Finnish metallers, who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006 with their song 'Hard Rock Hallelujah', released a single called 'Beast Loose In Paraside' in 2008 for the soundtrack to their film 'Dark Floors'. The artwork features a very blue photograph of Lordi.

Kiss - ‘Creatures of the Night’ (1982)

Lordi's 'Beast Loose In Paradise' single cover pays tribute to the sleeve to Kiss' 10th studio album 'Creatures of the Night'.

12. Uriah Heep – ‘Live at Shepperton '74’ (1986)

Released 12 years after it was recorded at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, 'Live at Shepperton '74' features a bootleg LP style brown paper sleeve with a stamp of the Uriah Heep band name and album title.

The Who - ‘Live at Leeds’ (1970)

Uriah Heep's 'Live at Shepperton '74' is clearly highly reminiscent of The Who's seminal 1970 live album 'Live at Leeds'. It could be argued that 'Live at Leeds' is in fact a homage to The Rolling Stones' bootleg LP 'Live'r Than You'll Ever Be' from 1969.

David Bowie ‘The Next Day’ (2013)

The cover to David Bowie's 24th studio album 'The Next Day' is a tweaked version of Bowie's 1977 album "Heroes" and features a white square obscuring the music legend's face. It was designed by Jonathan Barnbrook, who also created the 'Heathen' and 'Black Star' sleeves, and is meant to signify wiping out the past.

David Bowie – “Heroes” (1977)

Here's the "Heroes" cover from 1977 featuring an iconic image of David Bowie taken by photographer Masayoshi Sukita. The pose was inspired by German artist Erich Heckel's 1917 painting Roquairol.

Slade – ‘Till Deaf Do Us Part’ (1981)

Slade's tenth studio album featured a lovely image of a nail being hammered into an ear canal. Delightful stuff.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band – ‘The Roaring Silence’ (1976)

Slade's 'Till Deaf Do Us Part' is highly reminiscent of Manfred Mann's Earth Band's 'The Roaring Silence' from 15 years earlier, which features a huge outer ear with a mouth inside it. It was created by artist Derek Goldsmith.

Thee Oh Sees / Paul Cary – ‘Thee Oh Sees / Paul Cary’ (2010)

San Francisco alternative rock band Thee Oh Sees released a self-titled split 7" single with musician Paul Cary in 2010.

Rush – ‘Rush’ (1974)

Thee Oh Sees' single is of course a carbon copy of Rush's eponymous debut album from 1974.

David Byrne – ‘Grown Backwards’ (2004)

The Talking Heads frontman's sixth solo album features a photograph of Byrne gazing into the yonder.

Phil Collins – ‘… But Seriously’ (1989)

Genesis drummer/vocalist Phil Collins also gazed pensively into the yonder on his fourth solo album.

Genesis, the prog-rock outfit of which Gabriel was a founding member, recently sold their publishing rights and master recordings in a $300 million deal with Concord Music.

The deal gives the company ownership of the solo career catalogue of Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, as well as the music they recorded together as a band. Music from their period with Gabriel or his solo material, however, was not part of the sale.

Peter Gabriel confirms i/o European tour and new album: “It’s been a while”

i/o project isn’t the former Genesis man’s paean to his audio interface, we assume

Peter Gabriel

In the music technology world, the term i/o is frequently used to reference the inputs and outputs on an audio interface , but for reasons he’s currently keeping to himself, Peter Gabriel is taking it as the name of his forthcoming tour and album.

Whether the just-announced tour will be a 22-date love letter to Gabriel’s audio hardware remains to be seen - we guess it’s possible, but we’d say it’s unlikely - but what we can confirm is that these shows are the former Genesis man’s first in Europe for almost a decade (his last jaunt across the continent was during 2014’s Back to Front Tour, which celebrated 1986 album So).

i/o - The Tour will see Gabriel playing both new material from forthcoming album i/o (full details on this will follow) and tracks from his back catalogue. We’re told to expect “hits, fan favourites and the unexpected,” as Gabriel is joined by regular bandmates Tony Levin, David Rhodes and Manu Katché.

“It’s been a while and I am now surrounded by a whole lot of new songs and am excited to be taking them out on the road for a spin,” says Gabriel. “Look forward to seeing you out there.”

The tour will kick off in Krakow, Poland on 18 May 2023, with dates in Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, and the UK to follow. It’ll conclude in Dublin, Ireland on 25 June 2023.

You can expect North American dates in the late summer/fall - more details to follow.

A full list of European tour dates is below. Tickets go on sale starting Friday 11 November 2022 at Live Nation . Fans will have access to a special presale through Peter’s Fan Club mailing list, starting today.

Oxford, UK, December 14, 2023 —  Peter Gabriel recently completed his first live tour in six years, covering Europe and North America. This tour supported his latest album, ‘i/o’, which is his first release of original studio material since 2002 .  Both legs of ‘i/o – The Tour’ carried three Solid State Logic Live mixing consoles, including an L550 Plus at front-of-house, another L550 Plus for band monitors and an L650 for Gabriel’s monitors, plus a compact SSL SiX to mix Gabriel’s keyboards.

Peter Gabriel, an artist and studio owner, has a longstanding association with SSL. Within his personal production spaces, and at Real World Studios in Bath, England—a commercial complex he owns—he has installed several of the company’s large-format studio consoles. Since their introduction, Gabriel has exclusively relied on SSL Live consoles throughout his tours.

The best sounding desk in the world “Interestingly, I was the first person to use the SSL Live desk on his tour,” reports veteran monitor engineer Dee Miller, who has been working with Gabriel since the end of the Growing Up Tour in 2003. “I’ve been using the SSL Live desk since its inception. I’m extremely comfortable with it and I find it very easy to navigate”.

“It absolutely sounds stunning. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the best sounding desk in the world. It’s the only desk I use now.” Miller, set to mark 40 years on the road in 2024, has spent the last two decades collaborating with Robert Plant. Additionally, he had a long history with Jeff Beck and has worked with renowned artists such as The Who and Diana Ross. On i/o – The Tour he typically created 14 stereo in-ear mixes for the nine musicians and crew plus one for any potential musical guests.

Richard Sharratt, who has been Gabriel’s front-of-house engineer since 2010’s New Blood Tour, used a variety of consoles before SSL Live was introduced, including with other artists and clients for whom he has worked. “You’re conscious of the differences when you use a different desk and you come back to SSL,” he comments. “The SSL Live has just got that lovely warmth, that analogue thing. It sounds open and clear and just generally better, and we have more room for everything in the mix.”

Sharratt continues, “I love the layout of the L550 Plus. You can reach everything easily.” He used four Bricasti and the internal revebs on i/o – The Tour. The internal effects are really good on the SSL,” he says. “Peter’s vocals are a challenge because they are just so dynamic and because of his style of singing. I use the de-esser and multiband comp, a fair amount of inserted 10- band EQ and also more EQ to just tweak his mic to get more gain before feedback. But none of the compressors are working too hard.”

Establishing a creative workflow with SSL Live The tour’s production setup included 128 of MADI recording, Sharratt reports: “Peter insists on recording soundcheck at shows whenever he’s on stage.” Those recordings are a core part of Gabriel’s longtime creative workflow, both on the road and in the studio, where he records every musical idea, however fleeting, for potential future compositions, sometimes pulling them from the archives many years later. For his FOH mixing purposes, Sharratt adds, “The band inputs are within the first 96.”

Gabriel’s song presentations range from a solo vocal accompanied by a piano to a full-on band performance with the musicians firing on all cylinders. To handle the transition from one song to the next, Sharratt typically uses a single automation scene snapshot to set his mix up for the next number. “I don’t have scenes within a song but it’s a good starting point. The scene fires MIDI to the Bricastis and changes all the internal effects, EQs and the VCA layout, so I can have different things in front of me for different songs.”

Miller, too, makes extensive use of the Live’s scene recall capabilities, he says. “It’s all automated — mutes, groups, sends, EQs; the lot. Peter is quite particular and there’s a lot going on in his music, so the only way you could do it is by using scene snapshots.”

Minimizing outboard gear Miller uses the SSL Lives internal processing and scenes in preference to any outboard equipment. “I never use any outboard. Everything internal is fine for me, and I love everything on it. I love the reverbs. I only use a couple of small reverbs for a couple of members of the band, so I don’t need anything outboard. Plus, you’ve got SSL compressors on there. What else do you need? It’s the industry standard in the studio.”

In his experience, Miller says, artists can clearly hear the difference when they change from another brand of monitor console to the SSL Live. “One hundred percent they can, without a doubt. Everybody goes, ‘Wow, that sounds good!’”

Unlike the FOH engineer, the monitor engineer tailors the mix for each musician based on their personal preferences, notes Miller. “They tell you what they need,” he says. It’s important to him that he can deliver what they need with the utmost clarity. “All I have to care about is how the desk sounds. The SSL Live is so clean. There’s room for everything in the mix,” he says. “This desk, to me, is the benchmark.”

This latest tour was somewhat bittersweet for Miller after four decades on the road, half of them travelling the world with Peter Gabriel. “I’m back with Robert Plant for a couple of weeks in the U.K., doing very small shows, then I’m going to do some stuff locally in London, but I’ve run my course,” he reveals. “This was my last big tour — and a lovely way to go out.”

The SSL Live console used on i/o – The Tour were supplied by Britanita Row Productions. Peter Gabriel’s new album i/o is available now on Real World.

Back to Front – Live in London captures the complete live performance of the So album from start to finish.  This spectacular live concert, filmed at London’s O2 over 2 nights in October 2013, using the latest Ultra High Definition 4K technology, captures Peter Gabriel’s celebration of the 25 th  anniversary of his landmark album So .

To mark the event, Gabriel reunited his original So touring band from 1986/87 (David Rhodes, Tony Levin, Manu Katché and David Sancious, with Jennie Abrahamson & Linnea Olsson) and for the very first time fans saw them play the multi-platinum selling album in its entirety.

As a bonus Back to Front includes “The Visual Approach” a fascinating feature on the creation of the live show. While the core of the performance is the So album, there is so much more to the concert with unfinished, previously unreleased and re-imagined songs sitting effortlessly alongside classic hits reflecting what a multi-dimensional artist Peter Gabriel is. With innovative lighting and staging , Back to Front – Live in London offers a visual and narrative feast that puts the viewer inside a concert like never before.

A notable inclusion in the concert is the song Daddy Long Legs, at the time a previously unheard and unfinished piece which opened the show. With the release of Gabriel’s current album i/o , the performance is revealed to be an early, work in progress rendition of the song Playing for Time .

Peter’s critically acclaimed new album i/o is out now on LP, CD and Digital
