Today, Eater turns to Oslo, Norway, to take a look at the food and drink destinations that have been buzzing in the Scandinavian city. We’ve tapped food and wine writer Per Styregård to share his picks for the hottest openings of the past year.

In Oslo, food goes hand and hand with culture, as hubs for music and art offer some serious dining options (Vippa, Sentralen, Kulturhuset). Plus, locals are loving hearty Norwegian fare (Grådi, Ett Bord) and comfort food from the faraway American South (Way Down South). Presented in order from west to east, here now is the Eater Heatmap to Oslo:

Just about one year ago, the busy Grünerløkke neighborhood was gifted yet another restaurant. Grab a seat at the bar or in the dining room, which is decorated with exposed tiles, concrete walls, designer lamps, and ironic artwork. Choose four or five of the menu’s reasonably priced small dishes per person to share with the table. The service team — so relaxed that you can't tell them apart from the guests — presents the modern bistro style dishes on rustic handmade plates. Try the beef tartare, raw scallop with mango, pulled beef with radishes, or salsify with Gruyere.

Way Down South

You’ll never feel lonely at Way Down South in Oslo. The scent of smoked pork is so irresistible that this very tight 32-seater manages to attract and serve 150 guests every night of the week. Let the trademark juicy ribs, fat burgers, crispy fried chicken, and beef brisket form the core of the meal. Add a couple of sides, like crispy sweet potato chips, mac and cheese, cornbread, and house-made sauces.

Pontus Dahlström, co-founder and former head sommelier of three-Michelin-starred Maaemo, opened Kolonialen last year. The corner restaurant in the well-off Bislett neighborhood serves morning coffee, lunch, and dinner. Enjoy oysters on the half shell, lumpfish roe, or beef tartare to start, followed by cod with aquavit spices, poached chicken, or glazed pork with black garlic as mains. Satisfy your sweet tooth with Nordic-inspired desserts, like sea buckthorn curd or carrot ice cream with creme anglaise.

Kulturhuset

Performance and event space Kulturhuset recently relocated and expanded to fill an entire four-story building and backyard. The ground-floor cafe offers breakfast and coffee alongside a well-stocked wine bar with bites, like charcuterie, cornichons, and a solid cheese selection. On the second floor, there’s a beer bar with an extensive menu of local brews and an adjacent library for reading, working, and drinking. Head to the game room and bar on the top floor for shuffleboard and more wine.

This corner restaurant has made the surrounding Tøyen neighborhood more welcoming. The name means “greedy,” and may be a tongue-in-cheek reference to the affordability of the food. The relaxed but knowledgeable staff will bring you lunch, snacks, small plates, or brunch, depending on the hour. The menu features Norwegian comfort food based on quality produce with a mix of Nordic and other more distant influences. Order the fish sticks with remoulade; braised ox cheek with lingonberries; barley risotto with local cheese and wild mushrooms; or the pork, duck, or potato sausages accompanied by traditional condiments.

In a central location close to the National Theatre and the Oslo Concert Hall, Ett Bord attracts power lunchers and pre-concert diners, plus plenty of guests who seek out this restaurant solely for its straightforward, hearty dishes made with mostly organic produce from a farm near Oslo. For lunch, choose a main dish, soup, salad, and dessert (with options for vegetarians). For dinner, a more elaborate, three-course menu is on offer daily. Enjoy either meal at one communal 24-seat table.

More wine bar than restaurant, Brutus features minimal-intervention wines in a spartan atmosphere frequented by a young, hip crowd. Waiters pour bottles of wine with a relaxed attitude, and if you pose intricate questions about the selection, the crew is more likely to bring you to down to the cellar than produce a wine list. In the open kitchen, the chef turns out simple, vegetable-focused dishes.

Living up to its motto “from savings bank to bank of ideas,” Sentralen’s pompous bank building was remodeled to suit its new role as a culture and innovation hub, and now has a fine dining restaurant, a cafe, and a cafeteria. At the restaurant, four renowned Norwegian chefs present a modern menu of seasonal shared plates. The large cafe offers early-morning and late-night eats, including bread from the owner’s own bakery and pizza. And although it’s more than a year old, Sentralen is still packing in diners, helped by a new cafeteria menu from Michael Jordan’s former private chef.

Skippergata

An impressive building from the late 1800s now boasts 4,000 square meters of space for offices, events, startups, and co-working space. The roomy cafe in the front of the building offers breakfast and lunch daily, followed by drinks and coffee at night. The humble lunch menu features a daily rotation of invigorating salads and sandwiches with local, organic, and biodynamic vegetables, cheese, and grains, plus a selection of decadent gluten-free cookies, cakes, and rolls.

In a huge warehouse right on the edge of the Oslo port, Vippa is the newest and hippest food, culture, and music center in the city. Thursday through Sunday, carefully chosen food trucks offer a selection of diverse dishes, accompanied by a DJ or live music. Indulge in Vietnamese summer rolls, Chinese dumplings, Southern chili, Syrian shawarma, Japanese ramen, and a selection of local, organic, and biodynamic beers, wines, and other brews. This is the spot to await sunset in the Oslo fjord.

The 10 Best Restaurants In Oslo, Norway

Cafes, bars, restaurants and shops on Karl Johans gate in the city centre, Oslo, Norway

As Norway’s culturally rich capital, Oslo is packed full of boutique art galleries, architectural wonders and fabulous eateries just waiting to be discovered. To keep you in the know about where’s hot in this fast-changing city right now here is an updated version of Oslo’s ten best cultural restaurants that you need to visit.

1. alex sushi.

Often said to be one of the best sushi restaurants in existence, Alex Sushi has an extremely high reputation and yet never fails to deliver. All of the fish served here is as fresh as it could possibly be and the contents of the set menus changes daily depending on what has been caught that day. There are four set menus each with a different price tag and include dishes such as sashimi, nigri-sushi, maki, scallops, crab, tempura and lobster. For those with a smaller appetite or looking to try something unique, order a selection of innovative dishes off of the main menu instead. Diners can choose to sit at the boat shaped counter inside to enjoy a show of the chefs preparing the sushi right in front of them, or can relax outside on the docks of a fjord. Chef Esben Holmboe Bang (2nd R) works in the kitchen of his restaurant Maaemo in Oslo, September 9, 2014. In an unfashionable part of Oslo, head chef Bang?s minimalist creations are stirring up food culture in a country where, a generation ago, the height

Diners will wish to set aside an entire evening to make the most of the set menu option at Maaemo . Constantly changing to keep locals coming back for more, the tasting menu features a staggering 26 plates of raw foods and sublimely simplistic reductions. Expect to sample innovative and slightly daunting dishes such as reindeer heart, spruce juice and fried rye-bread cream for a dining experience you are unlikely to ever forget. Maaemo earned two Michelin stars in just three years and from the quality and array of dishes on offer, it is very easy to see how they managed it. Although unlikely to become anyone’s regular Saturday night restaurant, Maaemo is a restaurant that everyone should visit at least once.

The 6 Best Restaurants in Oslo

Eat & Drink | Europe | By Gabriella Brundu

best restaurants in Oslo

Gastronomes at the forefront of the ‘New Nordic’ culinary era have taken to bold and innovative ways of approaching food; perhaps the most famous example of this is René Redzepi’s famously foraged menu at Copenhagen’s 2-star Michelin restaurant, Noma (whose head sommelier, Mads Kleppe, just so happens to be Norwegian).

Norway doesn’t get as much of the limelight when it comes to world-famous chefs and months-long reservation waitlists, but don’t be fooled into thinking it doesn’t bear dining establishments worthy of media attention and Michelin stars (five of them, to be exact).

Norwegian chefs hone in on what Scandinavian dining is really all about: home-cooked meals made with local ingredients from both land and sea and the odd inspiration from other cultures.

best restaurants in Oslo

Norway’s unique location and climate give it the most cultivable land in the northern world thanks to the Gulf Stream that brings warm air and water to the Arctic Circle.

The result is mouth-watering flavour complexities that are hard to come by anywhere else; berries grown in microclimates burst with sweetness and seafood from the frigid waters of the Norwegian Sea when met by warm waters of the Gulf is less salty and privileged with the perfect texture.

best restaurants in Oslo

If your season of visit permits, be sure to sample Skrei , a Norwegian cod whose other moniker is ‘white gold’, remarked for its flaky texture and delicate flavour.

Next time you find yourself in Oslo, be sure to stop by some of my favourite spots below that include both classic Norwegian fare and international cuisine.

Savour a Cantonese-inspired menu fused with Norwegian ingredients as you overlook the Aker Brygge Marina. Your taste buds won’t be the only ones partying.

best restaurants in Oslo

Music is at the core of Ling Ling’s vibe with hosted DJ nights every Thursday through Saturday.

Le Benjamin

Sleek and hip, this casual bar and bistro is the result of the owners’ many trips to France, a country they hold close to their hearts.

best restaurants in Oslo

Indulge in French cheeses and wine – by the bottle or by the glass – and homemade meals made from scratch from a three-course menu.

For Nordic cuisine, head to Arakataka. This modern bistro is a favourite spot for concertgoers given its prime location across from Oslo’s Rockefeller Music Hall.

best restaurants in Oslo

Its menu consists of small plates many of which include catches from the frosty Norwegian shores such as King Crab, langoustine, and mackerel.

Enjoy Japanese robatayaki, Izakaya and a sushi bar in the chic and modern atmosphere of Hanami.

best restaurants in Oslo

Their beautifully presented plates come paired with an equally stunning waterfront view.

Bearing an honourable 3-star Michelin badge, all the ingredients at Maaemo are entirely organic and natural, featuring a variety of seafood, vegetables and herbs from exclusively Norwegian producers.

Its minimalist setting allows you to place all the attention on the dishes crafted in their innovative kitchen that encourages employees to add their personal touch to each plate.

Brasserie France

Transport to Paris at the Brasserie France, where French dishes like steak frites and bouillabaisse grace the menu in a traditional bistro setting.

For dessert, an unlimited buffet-style dessert trolley spoils diners with crème brûlée , puff pastries and macarons.

Oslo for Foodies

Today «New nordic cuisine» is a well integrated term in the culinary world. It hasn’t always been like this, and Norway has been viewed as somewhat of a culinary backwater. This, despite the fact that only France has racked up more wins in the «chefs’ world championship», the Bocuse d’Or competition!

Oslo has been the engine in increasing the status of Norwegian food culture. As we'll return to in our «Inspiration» section, many other cities in Norway can claim a high restaurant standard with the coveted Michelin recognition adorning a few of these. In Oslo four restaurants have stars, with Maaemo as the flagship with a full three star rating.

Oslo Restaurants

Oslo has a lot more to offer than traditional food, pizzerias and kebab kiosks - although there’s plenty to choose from in said categories! Our foray into Oslo’s over and underbelly starts at the very top, with the Michelin starred restaurants.

Maaemo Restaurant Oslo Tukka Koski

Michelin starred:

is the first Norwegian restaurant to be awarded 3 stars, and it is alongside NOMA in Copenhagen (chef Esben H. Bang began his career here) a leading light when it comes to Nordic food. The restaurant got off to a real flying start, in 2010, when it got a two-star rating in its very first year of existence. The focus is 100% on local, organic produce and on testing the limits of creativity using what can be harvested from the Norwegian nature.

was founded by 4 young veterans of Oslo restaurants, lead by Swedish chef Björn Svensson . They have managed the feat of creating an informal dining experience of Michelin quality. Don’t expect white table cloths, but do expect top quality produce creatively handled to bring out the most powerful flavors that they contain. Although similar in style to Maemo, Galt is «looser» without any comprises being made on quality.

has a modern, minimalist look and feel to it in keeping with the «new nordic» aesthetic. The least expensive of the Michelin alternatives, but perfectly capable of delivering surprising and creative dishes based on traditional and less traditional Norwegian produce. Also comparable to Galt in having a relaxed atmosphere.

Statholdergaarden

is now the «grand old man» of Oslo dining. In 2019 the restaurant celebrates 25 years, 21 of which it has held a Michelin star housed in the same building, which originates from 1640. Here you can expect white table cloths! 25 years ago the finer restaurants in Oslo were, by and large, under French influence, and Statholdergaarden still carries the torch, to some extent, without becoming outdated. Head-chef, former Bocuse d'Or winner, Bent Stiansen, has been at the helm since the start.

Katla Scallops

Up and Coming Restaurants

It makes a lot of sense that Norwegians have embraced the sushi tradition with the access to great quality, fresh seafood on their doorstep. Omakase’s chef is, in fact, a world champion sushi chef, Vladimir Pak - gold medalist in the 2017 «World Sushi Cup». He mixes the finest of Norwegian ingredients with Tokyo cuisine for a truly inventive take on the sushi tradition.

The top Oslo restaurants have lately attracted a lot of Scandinavian talent, Swedish and Danish chefs. In the case of Katla the chef is Icelandic, Atli Mar Yngvason . As befitting a place led by someone who grew on a volcanic rock, Katla (named after a volcano) serves up food prepared on open flame and lava rocks. This technique is a staple of Asian and Latin-American cooking and the menu reflects this mix of local produce and more «southern» cooking styles.

is a restaurant based on discarded produce, and the name could be translated as «leftover». This, however, doesn’t mean that it is a «low cost» dining experience, neither in quality nor in price. The concept is, taking odd looking produce that normally wouldn’t make it to a restaurant table, and create gourmet meals from these. This also entails using parts of the animal that normally is not taken advantage of in a restaurant, like the belly-fat from cod! The result, however, is truly pleasing for the eye as well as the palate.

Foodie on a Budget

You don’t need to break the bank to eat well in Oslo. Ok, so nothing really comes cheap in Oslo, but relatively speaking it is possible to enjoy good food that doesn’t devour your holiday budget in one sitting. The following three restaurants are options that we feel offer especially good quality for the cost. Keep in mind, though, that these aren’t cheap options, but places that are for the gourmand who is not planning to spend more on food than on the trip and hotel combined.

is located at St.Hanshaugen and is a genuine «neighborhood restaurant», and they like to keep it simple. Whereas the other restaurants on our list can tend to be «artsy», this is not the focus here! Despite the name «Smalhans» ( meaning «poverty») they go for an abundance of taste, that for some can be a bit overpowering, but for most is just what the palate craves.

has for almost 20 years been the alternative in Oslo for «budget gourmet-dining». Naturally, they have changed with the times, but never lost the ability to deliver high-quality food at a reasonable price. The Mediterranean influence hasn’t been lost either, but they have embraced the current trends, serving more local produce, and mixing in more nordic tradition on their menu.

Palace Grill

is another «oldtimer» on the Oslo scene. Their improvised and loose attitude has never changed, neither has the consistency of the quality. They always make an extra effort to do something creative that surprises the guest without compromising on the balance of the tastes. The succeed much more often than they fail!

Mathallen

Oslo Food Tour

There are other ways of getting to know the local food besides the traditional restaurant experience.   Street food, and similar, is a topic for another day, but for the cost conscious gourmand there are several activities in Oslo where food is or can be included. Have a look here .  If planning a gourmet-stay, check out our hotels in Oslo .

Best Restaurants with a View in Oslo

By the seaside, at the foot of Akershus Festning, you will find fish and seafood restaurant Solsiden. On a beautiful summer's evening in Oslo, this is certainly the right place to be: the views over the fjord, the sunset and the delicacies on the menu make this restaurant a popular meeting place. Crab, lobster, Norwegian haddock and sea-fish are just some of the things that are offered here, and the fresh tuna is worth a try! All this on cozy and stylish premises.

Onda Sea is a part of a restaurant complex located in Aker Brygge that constitutes three different dining concepts. 1000 square meters are divided into: Onda Asia, Onda Mezzanine and Onda Sea. Onda Sea mainly serves fish and seafood prepared in continental recipes. With spectacular views of Oslofjord and Akershus Fortress, it provides a great setting for important business lunches or a special, romantic occasion. This one may be a little tough on the pocket, but with the unparalleled food and view that it provides, Onda Sea is definitely worth it!

At the tip of Aker Brygge, with the sea right outside its door, it's not surprising that this restaurant serves only the best and freshest products. All types of fish, from salmon to cod to monkfish, are served fresh and cooked in a variety of sauces. Try to get an outdoor table in the summer, especially in the evenings. Along with the view of late evening sunlight on the fjord, you will have the advantage of a cheaper menu.

Sanguine Brasserie is a trendy restaurant located in Oslo Opera House that mainly serves Italian, Spanish and French cuisine. Needless to say, the guests here are connoisseurs of art and music who frequent the opera house. With an option of open air seating, it provides one of the best views of Oslofjord. Some would say that Sanguine Brasserie is a little expensive, however, after experiencing the good food, good wine and an exquisite view, they will forgive it for being so.

Located on the scenic Ekeberg Hill, this eatery provides a breathtaking and panoramic view of Oslo city. The focus of the restaurant is on serving international cuisine prepared to suit contemporary tastes. Outdoor seating is available, allowing you to soak in the view, but the menu is reportedly more extensive in the indoor section. They also have banquet and conference facilities. The food here is pricey, but the view and experience are unforgettable. So go ahead, plan your next event here!

Located on the island of Lille Herbern, a short ferry-ride away from Oslo, Lille Herbern, the restaurant, opened in 1929, is considered one of the oldest restaurants in the city. Offering a number of activities for quality time together, the island itself is a welcome respite for people harrowed by city stress. Added to that, the factor of good food makes this experience absolutely wonderful. Needless to say, any private or corporate events arranged here will be unforgettable. The restaurant menu, emphasizing on seafood, consists of season-based cuisine. Only open during summers, the restaurant is almost always pre-booked; hence, reservations are advisable. Whether it is the island activities, the restaurant atmosphere or the food, visiting Lille Herbern once will leave you begging for more.

With an open-air bar and a picturesque surround, Holmenkollen Restaurant is a must visit. Its location in Holmenkollen- one of the most renowned ski-areas of the city makes it a popular place for locals and tourists alike. Dig into splendid Scandinavian fare as you take in the snow-covered peaks that invoke a mystery and a sense of adventure. The Reinsdyr med skogsopp og selleripuré or reindeer meat cooked with mushrooms and celery is worth writing home about due to its rich flavor and smooth texture. Finish off with the Creme Brulee that melts in the mouth.

10 restaurants in Oslo you mustn’t miss!

Published: 17 April 2018 Updated: 3 January 2019

Even though Oslo is one of the most expensive cities in the world, you can eat amazing food without it costing an arm and a leg. You just need to find the right restaurant! Here are tips on 10 tasteful restaurants in all price ranges in the capital that are not to be missed!

Table at Maaemo with a view over Barcode in Oslo

Oslo is a popular destination for its food. With great variety and high quality, the Oslo restaurant offerings are both large and diverse. In the capital, you can eat anything from gourmet dishes to Michelin restaurants, Thai, seafood to Mexican and vegan food. No matter what you’re looking for, it’s never far to a good restaurant. Check out our tips here!

1. Gourmet experience at Maaemo

If you are looking for a culinary experience that is both rare and unique at a world-class gourmet restaurant (and you are willing to pay for it), Maaemo is definitely the choice for you! Maaemo is the only restaurant in Norway with three stars in the prestigious Michelin guide (and the first Nordic restaurant with the award). They offer exceptional and innovative cuisine in a minimalist setting. All food served at the restaurant is made of organic and natural ingredients. Cheap cafeteria for hearty Somalian food. A sign of a good diner: taxi drivers. In any city, taxi drivers are always a good compass to identify approved food hotspots. There were taxi drivers here. Don't underestimate the importance of cheap eats in society! While in US big cities there's an abundance, here in Oslo it's a welcome rarity. They start to function not only as a restaurant but also a community center of sorts. Of course, none of this would happen if there's isn't good food as the backbone. What you get for 90 NOKs (!) is a HUGE plate of spiced rice/pasta (Somali cuisine use a lot of pasta), and then topped with stewed/grilled/pan-fried beef or fish or chicken. I didn't know what the names are, and they don't seem to bother to explain them either. Most clients seem to know by how it looks. I had rice cooked with green cardamom and raisins, topped with thin slices of beef 'steaks' cooked with earthy spices. The rice was tasty, the beef was sort of dry but I think it was on purpose. Next time, I should order a soup in addition, like many other customers. I'd stop short from saying it's really delicious, but they're good enough and had huge portions: 3-star food with 4-star value. The plate of food is completed with a banana. A must for any self-respecting Somali lunch.
