GARY PLAYER’S SENIOR BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORIES RECOGNIZED AS MAJORS BY THE PGA TOUR IN USA

As a three-time winner of the Senior Open, Gary Player will now officially be recognized as a nine-time Senior Major champion by the PGA Tour and the PGA Champions Tour as he has always been by the remainder of the golfing world.

The Asian & European Tours, R&A and World Golf Hall of Fame already recognized the Senior Open Championship as a Senior Major, but now the PGA Tour and Champions Tour in the USA will at last join golf’s most influential bodies in honoring all Senior Open wins as Major victories, rather than only accepting those won after 2002. As such, the PGA Tour will now join the golfing world in acknowledging that Gary Player won nine Senior Majors, in addition to his nine Majors on the regular tour. Player remains the only golfer to win the career Grand Slam on both tours.

Player won the Senior Open Championship in 1988, 1990, and 1997. However, the PGA Tour previously only acknowledged Senior Open Championship wins after 2002 as official Major championships in the United States. This meant that the PGA Tour and Champions Tour only considered Player to have won six Senior Majors.

Player has worked to have his record set straight in the USA, consistently maintaining his record of nine Senior Majors in interviews and profiles. He has argued that all Senior Open victories should count and countered all excuses otherwise. He felt that precedent had been made when The Open Championship itself had also been made retroactive by the PGA Tour previously as well.

In one such discussion of the Major Championship records Player said, “Every tournament has to start somewhere, and then evolves. The Masters in 1934 was not what it is today, but every player who has won it is recognized as a Major winner. I remember Arnold Palmer telling me it was ‘bullsh–’ that the Senior Open Championship wasn’t an official major in the states. He so regretted not winning the Senior Open Championship when he was playing senior golf.”

But why does Gary Player, one of the greatest golfers in the history of the game, care about three Senior Open wins? He did not bring his family out of poverty as a young man by staying satisfied with the status quo. Everything in his life was and is still earned – including his nine Senior Major Championships of which he is so proud.

Player said, “What I have learned about myself is that I am an animal when it comes to hard work, achievement and success. There can never be enough for me.”

In response to the PGA Tour Policy Board’s decision, the Black Knight said, “I am thrilled to have my record officially acknowledged by the PGA Tour in America. I consider myself a global player who supports golf around the world. To finally have all of golf’s major governing bodies and tours recognize one of my proudest accomplishments means so much and I thank Commissioner Jay Monahan and the board with great appreciation.”

This change will also give 10 other players one, and in a few cases two, more senior majors to their names. These players include Christy O’Connor Jr., Sir Bob Charles, and Brian Barnes who all won twice, as well as Noboru Sugai, Ian Stanley, Brian Huggett, Tom Wargo, John Fourie, Bobby Verwey, and Neil Coles.

Brooks Koepka won the 105th PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, for his third PGA title and fifth major in all.

He clinched the two-shot win with a final-round 67 for his third Wanamaker trophy.

He joins Gene Sarazen and Sam Snead with three PGA titles. Only three golfers have won the title more. Koepka also won the PGA in 2018 and 2019.

The 2023 PGA marks the third major he has won in New York, to go along with his 2019 PGA at Bethpage and his 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.

How each of the 2023 men's majors were won, explained in four charts

Just like that, the 2023 men's major championships are in the books. We've crowned our four champions—Jon Rahm, Brooks Kopeka, Wyndham Clarkaand Brian Harman—and are counting down the more than 200 days until 2024 Masters week rolls around.

But before we focus too much on what's next, it's worth exploring the Strokes Gained data to look back at what just happened. What did the winners of this year's majors do so well, the week they won? And what can we learn from this year's winners for next year?

Let's dive in.

Jon Rahm's captured the Masters with a display of ball-striking brilliance. Sitting inside the top six both off the tee and into greens meant Rahm gave himself lots of opportunities to make birdies, and not many to make bogeys. His elite ball-striking was enough to cover for his good, but not great, putting (which included a four putt on the first hole of the tournament).

When Brooks Koepka gets into major mode, his game looks impenetrable. And the stats tell the story: The PGA champion finished inside the top 11 in every category that week. It's a formula for slowly, and relentlessly, pulling away from the rest of the field.

Wyndham Clark is the son of professional tennis player, and his stats from his win at U.S. Open give off a serve-and-volley vibe. The powerful player took advantage of Los Angeles Country Club's wide, forgiving fairways to put himself in scoring position. A hot putter would do the rest.

Brian Harman took apart Royal Liverpool Golf Club with an incredible display of putting. He was one putt from literally being flawless from the crucial range inside of 10 feet. His driving, though, doesn't get the credit it deserves . Not the longest player, he finished 11th in SG: Off The Tee by pulling more of drivers than his competitors, but without sacrificing accuracy.

Who Are the Golfers With the Most Majors?

The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and Open Championship (also known as the British Open) make up golf’s four majors. They are the pinnacles of achievement in the game and are looked at as the defining factors for greatness amongst the best players to ever pick up a golf club. Here is a list of the golfers, past and present, with the most major titles to their names.

1. Jack Nicklaus - 18 Major Championships

Jack Nicklaus’ unmatched major championship run spanned from 1962 to 1986 as the “Golden Bear” won major championships in three decades. Jack won multiple majors in a year an incredible four times, doing so in 1963, ’66, ’72 and ’80. He won at least one major in four consecutive years from 1970-1973, and rattled off seven of his 18 major triumphs in a six-year span from 1970-1975. Records are made to be broken, but it’s hard to imagine anybody breaking Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championships.

2. Tiger Woods - 15 Major Championships

Despite sitting a few major titles short of Jack Nicklaus, many golf fans and historians alike consider Tiger Woods the best golfer of all time. Tiger absolutely blitzed the Tour by winning 14 of his 15 majors in a span of just 12 years from 1997 - 2008. He became the first golfer of all time to hold all four major championships at one time, what is now referred to as the “Tiger Slam” when he won the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and Open Championship in 2000 and followed it up with a Masters win in early 2001. He won the 2008 U.S. Open on a broken leg and added perhaps the most impressive major championship victory to his resume by winning the 2019 Masters, 22 years after his maiden major win.

3. Walter Hagen - 11 Major Championships

Walter Hagen won all 11 of his major championships before the fourth major, the Masters, even existed. Hagen’s final major triumph came at the 1929 Open Championship, five years before the first Masters was played. Although he competed in six Masters Tournaments in his career, his best finish was T11 and he was unable to accomplish what is today known as the career grand slam. Hagen did however win four consecutive PGA Championships from 1924-27 and rack up 11 major championships in an era when only three majors were contested each year.

Ben Hogan had an incredible six-year run from 1948-1953, winning all nine of his majors in that span. In 1953 he won three of the year’s four majors, the U.S. Open, Masters and Open Championship, and did not enter the PGA Championship due to issues relating to his serious car crash in 1949. He completed the career grand slam with his 1953 Open Championship win, which proved to be the final major of his career.

Gary Player won majors in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, amassing nine majors in that span. After winning his first major at the 1959 Open Championship, Player completed the career grand slam in just six years, culminating in the 1965 U.S. Open, the only U.S. Open win of his career. Player’s won both the Open Championship and Masters in 1974 and won his final major in 1978, his third Masters win.

Career Grand Slams

No one has yet won all four majors in one calendar year, although Tiger Woods coined the "Tiger Slam" by simultaneously holding all four major titles. However, five elite golfers have won each of the majors throughout their careers. This achievement is known as the career grand slam. The following is a list of golfers to win the career grand slam.

Three active players have completed three legs of the career grand slam, and need just one more to join the exclusive group of grand slam winners.

List of men’s golf major championship winners by year

The four current men's major golf championships are currently played in the chronological order of the Masters Tournament in April, the PGA Championship in May, the US Open in June and the Open Championship (British Open) in July.

Interestingly enough, that's also the order in which the tournaments were first played, youngest to oldest.

The Masters Tournament began in 1934, with the PGA Championship starting in 1916. The US Open was first played in 1895, with the Open Championship first played in 1860.

These tournaments have not always been considered major championships -- which was a classification decided in 1930 for Bobby Jones who, in that single year, became the first player to win the US Open, The Open, the US Amateur and the Amateur Championship (British Amateur) in a calendar year.

We have listed out the men's major championship winners by year, dating back to 1860. The tournaments were not always played in this order, so they are not in chronological order. Rather, they are situated by the current men's major championship calendar. The Open, US Open and PGA Championship were not played in different stages of World War I, and all four majors were not played during different stages of World War II.

However, since 1945, three of the four majors have been played continuously. The R&A canceled the 2020 Open Championship because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

2024 PGA Championship odds, field: Surprising PGA picks from golf model that's won 11 majors

U nlike the other majors, the PGA Championship is the only that is exclusive to professional golfers. No amateurs will be a part of the 2024 PGA Championship field when play tees off Thursday, May 16 from Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville. The field of pros hopes to take advantage of what has historically been a course with numerous birdie opportunities, as the average winning score from the three previous PGA Championships at Valhalla is 15-under-par. Rory McIlroy won the last major held at this course in 2014, while Brooks Koepka enters the PGA Championship 2024 as the defending champion.

McIlroy (10-1) and Koepka (16-1) are looking up to Scottie Scheffler in the 2024 PGA Championship odds. The Masters winner is the 4-1 PGA Championship favorite, followed by Jon Rahm (9-1). Ludvig Aberg, who was runner-up at the Masters in his first major start, is 16-1. Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions 

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 PGA Championship: Brooks Koepka, a three-time PGA champion and one of the favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top 10. Koepka has five major tournament wins on his resume and a reputation for elevating his level of play in big events. However, his last two major starts haven't gone well as he was 45th at the Masters, which followed a 64th-place finish at last year's Open Championship. He's failed to shoot par in each of his last seven rounds at major tournaments.

After notching three tournament wins in 2023, including last year's PGA Championship, it has been tough sledding for Koepka in 2024. He has no victories, or even top-fives, and across his six starts, he has three times as many finishes outside the top 25 (three) as he has inside the top 10 (one). He played Valhalla at the 2014 PGA Championship and finished in a tie for 15th place, but that placement ranks just eighth out of his 11 career PGA Championship starts.

Another surprise: Justin Thomas, a 31-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Thomas hasn't had the best run at recent majors, as he's missed the cut in four of his last five majors. However, the one cut he made was at last year's PGA Championship, and this is clearly his favorite major event. He won this tournament just two years ago, his second victory after also being the 2017 PGA champion. Also, Thomas has had more top-fives at the PGA Championship than top-fives at every other major tournament combined.

Thomas is off to a solid start this season, with a pair of top-10s. He also has strong metrics across the board, ranking among the top 12 of the PGA Tour in strokes gained: tee-to-green, birdie average and strokes gained: approach the green. Add in that Thomas is a Louisville native who will have the fan support at a major he's most comfortable at and he has a much better chance to win than his long PGA Championship 2024 odds imply, according to the model.  See who else to pick here .

Rory McIlroy claims 25th PGA Tour victory, teaming with Shane Lowry to win Zurich Classic in a playoff

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event Sunday, beating Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

Trainer pushed a 6-foot par putt to the right of the cup to end it, with Lowry and McIlroy sharing a smiling embrace on the green.

The 34-year-old McIlroy, playing in the event for the first time, won his 25th PGA Tour title and first of the season. Lowry claimed his third PGA Tour victory.

The Irish tandem closed with a 4-under-par 68 in the alternate-shot final round to match Ramey and Trainer at 25-under 263.

Ramey and Trainer began the day tied for 27th at 16 under and shot to the top of the leaderboard with nine birdies between the seventh and 18th holes. They tied the alternate-shot tournament record of 63, but then had to wait nearly three hours to see if their lead would stand up.

They struggled to execute on the playoff hole. Trainer pulled his drive into the left rough, Ramey also yanked his approach left off the cart path and into the wall below the suites around the 18th green. Trainer then chipped short before Ramey finally got his team on the green.

Lowry narrowly missed his mark twice on the playoff hole, putting an approach in a bunker and then leaving a birdie putt for the victory on the edge of the cup.

But Lowry came through when he had to on the 18th, forcing the playoff with a short birdie putt on the par-5 hole, capitalizing on McIlroy’s deft lofted chip from the apron that stopped close to the pin.

Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard were nearly in the playoff as well. Needing a birdie, they went long off the 18th green on their second shot. Hubbard’s chip up the back apron stopped short on the fringe, but Brehm still nearly sank a birdie putt from there, leaving the ball near the right edge of the cup as the crowd gasped. They finished third at 24 under.

Former BYU teammates Patrick Fishburn and Zach Blair, the leaders after three rounds, were still tied for the lead heading to 17, only to make a double bogey after Blair’s tee shot landed right of the green and Fishburn chipped short. They wound up in a four-way tie for fourth at 23 under.

Defending champions Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin finished 10th after their final-round 71 left them at 21 under.

LPGA — Hannah Green won LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship for the second straight year Sunday, holing out twice from off the greens in a pivotal back-nine stretch at challenging Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif.

A year after making a 25-foot birdie on the final hole of regulation and winning on the second hole of a playoff, Green — with help from Maja Stark — took the late drama out of this one for her fifth LPGA Tour victory and second of the year.

“It’s really kind to me,” Green said about the course. “I felt like a couple times today almost got like a member bounce. I, obviously, really am fond of the golf club and joked that they didn’t approve it with me that they were making alterations. I love it here.”

Green closed with a 5-under 66 to beat Stark by three strokes. The 27-year-old Australian, also the winner early last month in Singapore, finished at 12-under 272 on the tree-lined layout with poa annua greens that become bumpy late in the day.

Green began the key run with a chip-in birdie on the par-3 12th and made a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 13th. Then, after Stark bogeyed the par-4 16th two groups ahead, Green ran in a 25-footer for eagle from the fringe on 15 to open a four-stroke lead, and made it 5 under in five holes with a birdie on 16.

“When I chipped in on 12 I kind of felt like I really snagged one there,” Green said. “I really like the 13th hole and also played the 15th really well. When I made eagle on 15 that kind of sealed the deal. I did see Maja got it to 9 under so I know what I needed to do. Usually, I make it really tricky on myself and only win by a shot.”

Stark finished with a 68, rebounding from the bogey on 16 to birdie the final two holes. The 24-year-old Swede also finished second last week outside Houston in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year.

LIV — Three-time PGA Tour winner Brendan Steele held off a fast finishing Louis Oosthuizen to win the LIV Golf Adelaide tournament at The Grange Golf Club in Australia by one stoke.

The 41-year-old Steele shot a final-round 68 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 18-under 198 to earn his first victory since he won his second Safeway Open in 2017 on the PGA Tour.

Steele had a streak of five consecutive birdies early in the round, before some putting jitters appeared in his back nine to open the door for a fast finishing pack of challenges including Oosthuizen, and former previous Masters winners Charl Schwartzel (64) and Jon Rahm (64).

“Yeah, I was telling myself that I knew there was going to be hard moments today regardless of the result and that I just needed to get back in there and start playing with freedom again,” Steele said moments after winning.

“And, and I was able to hit some good shots after that and write the show.”

South Africa’s Oosthuizen shot 65 to finish second at 17-under 199, and had drawn within one stroke of Steele late in Sunday’s final round, only for the American to make some clutch pars in the final holes to clinch victory.

Oosthuizen’s compatriot Schwartzel and Rahm were among a group of five players at 16-under 200, with Joaquin Niemann (66), Andy Ogletree (65) and Dean Burgmester (67) in a tie for third.

Former world No.1 Rahm had an eagle and six birdies in his 8-under 64 but had left too much ground to catch up on Steele on the final day to capture his first title since joining the LlV tour in December.

Last year’s winner Talor Gooch shot 70 and finshed in a tie for 26th at 10-under.

Champions — Stephen Ames celebrated his 60th birthday with a successful title defense in the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, closing with a 5-under 67 on Sunday for his eighth PGA Tour Champions victory.

A stroke behind Paul Broadhurst after matching the tournament record Saturday with a 64, Ames had two eagles in the final round. He won by four strokes, finishing at 14-under 202 at TPC Sugarloaf for his record third victory in the event.

Broadhurst, the 58-year-old Englishman coming off a victory last week in the Invited Celebrity Classic, closed with a 72 to tie for second with Doug Barron (69). K.J. Choi (70) and Steven Alker (71) were 9 under.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's nailed 11 majors

The 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson is set to get underway on Thursday, May 2, and several players will enter this week's event confident they can secure the victory. Lee (2021-22) as the only golfer to win this event in back-to-back years. SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage this season. The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Top 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson predictions 

One major surprise the model is calling for at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024: Day, the defending champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top five. Day got off to a hot start this season when he posted three top-10 finishes in his first five tournaments, but he has struggled since then. He has finished outside the top 15 in his last five events, including a missed cut at the Texas Children's Houston Open at the end of March. 

Day ranks 183rd on the PGA Tour in approach shots from more than 200 yards, which will be a shot that he has to take throughout this tournament. He is also ranked 133rd in green in regulation percentage (63.62%) and 152nd in strokes gained: approach to green (-0.380). Day is not in strong form right now, so the model is looking elsewhere with its pick to win this tournament. 

Another surprise: Tom Hoge, a 28-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

In order to score well at TPC Craig Ranch, players will need to be extremely accurate with their irons and few do it better than Hoge. In fact, the 34-year-old enters this week's event ranked second in strokes gained: approach to green (1.035). He also ranks sixth in scoring average (69.13), ninth in birdie average (4.58) and 10th in putting average (1.709).
