Sand Point Light House is a Photographer's Paradise!

16 Water Plant Road, Escanaba, MI 49829

Sand Point Lighthouse is considered  a historical Michigan lighthouse  and is fully restored. It's a photographer's paradise!

The Sand Point Lighthouse and Historical Complex is located near the end of Ludington Street and across the street from the Escanaba Municipal Marina.

Check out the fresnel fourth class lens at the top of the tower, it's pretty cool!

This Escanaba Michigan lighthouse is open to the public between Memorial Day Weekend to September 1st. See how the light keeps lived and walk up into the light tower for exceptional views of Lake Michigan.

Fayette Historic State Park and Historic Town Site is Incredible for History Buffs!

Located about 55 minutes from Escanaba Michigan, Fayette Historic State Park and Historic Town Site is worth the trip.

Fayette was once a bustling industrial community that manufactured iron ore between 1867 and 1891. Come see what it was like to live in the 19th century by wandering through this well preserved museum village.

Costumed interpreters portray former residents giving a realistic idea of what it was like to live in this rural, wilderness town.  Daily attractions include a modern visitor center, exhibits, scheduled guided tours, 20 historic buildings, kilns and a great interactive visitor center that tells Fayette’s story.

We recommend allowing two to three hours for your visit.

When Should You Visit?

The park is open year-round, 8 am to 10 pm, however, the historic townsite and campsites are only open mid-May to mid-October and the boat slips from early May to early November.

Is There a Fee?

There is no admission charge; however, a Michigan State Park permit is required.

Non-residents can purchase passes when they arrive. Day passes are $9 and annual passes are $32. These passes are good at all Michigan State Parks.

Can We Camp?

Seasonal modern campsites, hammock camping, boat slips and a year-round lodge are available at Fayette Historic State Park. Campsite and marina reservations can be made up to six months in advance online at www.midnrreservations.com or Mon-Fri: 8 am–8 pm, or Sat-Sun: 9 am–5 pm by calling 800-447-2757.

Are Pets Welcome?

Yes but they must be kept quiet and on an up-to-6-foot leash. 

What Else Is There to Do?

• Five miles of hiking trails wind through beech and maple hardwood forests and throughout the historic town site. 
• Trails are groomed for cross-country skiing which circle throughout the historic town site.  
• Look down at the cedars growing on the park’s limestone bluffs. Some are 800, 900, even 1,400 years old, making them the oldest trees in any Michigan state park!

Do You Scuba?

Scuba diving is allowed in Snail Shell Harbor during certain times of the day. A fee and use permit is required for this activity so all divers may participate. 

Haymeadow Falls and Trail

Haymeadow Falls Trail is a 1.4 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Rapid River, Michigan that features a waterfall and is good for all skill levels. 

The trail is great for walking, spotting nature, and snowshoeing . The trail is best from March until October.  It is not groomed in the winter. The trails can be wet or muddy so wear boots.

Dogs are also able to use this trail.

Upper Hand Brewery in Escanaba Michigan

Upper Hand Brewery, a division of Bell’s Brewery (Kalamazoo), was founded by Larry Bell, who always dreamed of opening a brewery in the Upper Peninsula.  The brewery broke ground in 2013 and has been going strong ever since.

I mean with beers called Deer Camp, Yooper Ale and Plaidurday, you just can’t go wrong!

Upper Hand Brewery also likes to get involved with the community so they host fun events throughout the year.   Check their website for fun events such as tie dying, night hikes, bon fires and more. 

Garden Peninsula Historical Museum 

State St. M-183 Garden, Michigan . Sometime only open by appointment so be sure to call (906) 644-2398

Garden Peninsula Historical Museum. Housed in a one-room schoolhouse it features stories about logging, fishing and going to school on the peninsula.

The friendly local volunteers can help you research your family history. It's neat to see historic clothing and tools of the past.

Peninsula Point Lighthouse and Interpretive Trail

If you love spectacular views of Lake Michigan, this Michigan lighthouse is for you!

The 40 ft. lighthouse tower is an easy climb on a circular staircase. At the top, you will be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of lake Michigan. 

Pit toilets are available. 

A parking area for RV’s is available at the beginning of the narrow, winding final mile of road.

A 1-mile long trail shows historical and geographical features along Big Bay de Noc.  The trail follows the shoreline ridges marking ancient lake levels.  The trail ends at the 1865 Peninsula Point Lighthouse.  

Did You Know?

• The rocky shoreline yields fossils estimated at 400-500 million years old. 
• Shaped like a funnel, the peninsula naturally collects thousands of  monarch butterflies  at its tip each fall where they rest before continuing south across Lake Michigan on their annual migration. A few monarchs tagged on the peninsula have been found in Mexico, helping document this amazing migration of nearly 2,000 miles .

Did you know the Upper Peninsula State Fair is now home of the largest fair in the Upper Peninsula?!

Escanaba Michigan has been the site of the Upper Peninsula State Fair ever since the first opening day on Sept. 17, 1928!

And what a fair it is! Held the third week of August , the extraordinary fair rocks seven days of midway fun, grandstand entertainment and tasty fair foods that entice 80,000+ through its gates each year!

So come on out to watch blue ribbon winners at the horse and livestock shows, see tiny animals at the Miracle of Life exhibit or try your luck by entering a raffle for a beautiful, handmade quilt.

Enjoy antique car shows, watch the vehicles zip around the track at the UP International Raceway and be mesmerized by the brilliant fireworks finale on Sunday. What a great way to make some memories in Escanaba Michigan!

This park is a great place to stroll, picnic, or enjoy the picturesque views. It’s an outstanding coastal park located along Lake Michigan and includes facilities for everyone. Tennis and volleyball courts, picnic areas, and bicycle paths are wrapped up in Ludington Park.

Ludington Park is one of Escanaba’s most popular attractions. The famous Harbor Hideout playground is a fave spot for children, while the Escanaba Riverwalk provides lovely views for adults. The Escanaba Municipal Beach beach is listed in our Top 50 Michigan Beaches that you will want to check out.

Those who enjoy taking a ride on a bicycle will find plenty of trails to explore. This is a great place to come for a day of relaxation or to spend some time with family and friends. Many events are held throughout the year, so check the calendar before you visit.

#2 Take Horse Lessons in Bay Run Equestrian Center

Have you ever been horse riding? It’s an excellent activity to take part in when visiting Escanaba as there are a few stables in the area that offer horse riding. Bay Run Equestrian Center is one of them and is located a little outside of Escanaba.

Bay Run Horse Center is a 263-acre horse farm that has been making friends with horses for more than 20 years. There are 22 stalls available for boarding your hooved companion. If you don’t own an equine, no problem! You can still come and enjoy the scenic trails that wind through the property.

Trainers provide a range of lessons, including jumping, dressage, and endurance . They offer horseback riding lessons as well as pony rides for the kids. Besides, horses at Bay Run Equestrian Center are available to lease.

#3 Feel Local Spirit in William Bonifas Fine Arts Center

If you prefer to stay on two legs, the Escanaba William Bonifas Fine Arts Center is for you. The center hosts rotating art exhibits throughout the year. #4 Get Yummies in Pellegrini’s Strawberry Farm

Pellegrini’s Strawberry farm started harvesting juicy strawberries in 1976. Now, it has become one of Escanaba’s most popular tourist attractions. The farm is open from June to July, and visitors can come and pick up their strawberries or purchase a ready-picked pint.

Pellegrini’s Strawberry Farm covers up to seven acres sprinkled with red berries. The most popular strawberry breed is Cavendish, which is loved for its hardiness and attractive shape. But you can also find here other breeds like L’Amore, Jewel, Kent, Dar-select, Cabot, and Brunswick.

Sand Point Lighthouse is Escanaba’s most iconic landmark. The lighthouse is situated on the shores of Lake Michigan and offers amazing views of the Escanaba River.

#6 Chill Out in Upper Hand Brewery

After a long day strolling around Escanaba, you may want to stop at Upper Hand Brewery for a pint of one of their locally brewed beers. The facility is located in the Delta County Airport business park. The taproom is open Thursday-Saturday and offers a wide selection of their brews on tap.

Apart from the well-known Upper Hand beer, check out their fancy merch. It includes a wooden sign, playing cards, and a little flannel jacket for your beer can. The kitchen offers chips & dips, jerkies, and famous pickled eggs.

#7 Bring Family to Upper Peninsula State Fair

In August, go straight to the Upper Peninsula State Fair if you’re visiting Escanaba. This well-known facility is all about family fun. The State Fais offers a great variety of entertainment for all ages: from live music to car shows.

Upper Peninsula State Fair provides livestock shows with their blue ribbon winners. Kids are excited by local truck races that are must-haves to watch. Sparkly fireworks are always a top-notch finale of the fair. Take part in the fair’s competitions and don’t forget to try Escanaba’s famous pasties.

Admission prices range from $5 to $10 (daily) and $20 and $35 (weekly). Kids aged five and under are free of admission. The fair takes place every August, so check the website for the exact dates.

#8 Get Active in Wells Sports Complex

Looking for things to do in Escanaba Mi, such as working out? How about a cozy place to stretch out and have fun? Wells Sports Complex in Escanaba is the answer. The sports center is located in front of the Gardens of Rest Memorial Park. Wells Sports Complex provides two indoor ice surfaces open to figure skating and hockey. #9 Hike in Pioneer Trail Park

Pioneer Trail Park is a part of the Delta County Parks system located in the Upper Peninsula. The park has a playground, a pavilion, a picnic area, campsites, and a fishing area on the Escanaba River. You can go fishing, swimming, canoeing, or kayaking here. In wintertime, try skiing or snowshoeing on the trails. The pavilion is rentable for special occasions like family reunions or birthday parties.

10 minutes from Nahma, off Ee 25

As you drive into Nahma on Ee 25, keep your eyes on the right-hand side for a turnoff that dips down a hill to a gravel parking area. Park by the boulders then hike along the trail. Within minutes you will be on a stretch of sand that is a local secret. Amenities: 

• Sandy, good swimming and book-reading beach. The size of the beach depends on Big Bay de Noc’s water levels.

To reach this expansive beach beyond the Portage Point Marsh , drive south from Escanaba on M-35 and turn left on Portage Point 11.4 Lane. Follow the road until it dead ends at the parking lot. The 10-minute walk to the beach is well worth the extra steps. Bring your picnic and blankets. Amenities:

1 dead, 2 injured after driver causes collision while trying to pass active ambulance

DELTA COUNTY, MI – One person is dead, and two others are seriously injured after a crash in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

WLUC-TV reported the crash occurred near U.S. 2 and U.S. 41 near E & K Auto Repair in Delta County’s Wells Township around 3:50 p.m. on Monday.

Michigan State Police in Gladstone told the TV station that the crash happened when the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado tried to pass an ambulance that had its lights and siren activated.

While trying to pass, the Silverado struck a Dodge Ram parked on the shoulder that was yielding for the ambulance.

The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, a 35-year-old man from Escanaba, was pronounced dead on scene, according to the TV station.

The driver and passenger of the Dodge Ram sustained severe injuries and were transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital for treatment. An investigation is ongoing.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Escanaba Department of Public Safety, Delta County Sheriff’s Office and Rampart EMS.

US-2 Gogebic County resurfacing project starts May 13

May 03, 2024

MARENISCO, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing about $10.3 million to resurface nearly 18 miles of US-2 from Great Lakes Road to Gogebic Station in Gogebic County. The work includes asphalt crushing and shaping, asphalt milling and resurfacing, drainage improvements, realignment of the M-64 south junction intersection, and pavement markings.

Start date: Monday, May 13, 2024

Estimated end date: Early October 2024

Traffic restrictions: Work will be performed during daytime hours only. One lane of alternating traffic will be maintained on US-2 using traffic regulators. An 11-foot lane width restriction will be in place during the project.

Jobs numbers: Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 125 jobs.

Safety benefit: This project will increase safety for motorists and extend the lifespan of the roadway.

Four men arrested after teen says she was trafficked for months

ATLANTA ( WANF /Gray News) - Four people have been arrested for allegedly trafficking a teenager in Atlanta and Dekalb County, Georgia, and at least one other suspect is still on the run, according to authorities.

Taalib Blount, Talmes Eugene Smith III, Albert Wells and Levi Sears were arrested. They are being held in jails in DeKalb, Gwinnett and Fulton counties, according to authorities.

Blount, 47, is charged with rape, aggravated assault, trafficking a person for sexual servitude, false imprisonment, two counts of contributing to the unruliness of a minor, aggravated child molestation and sodomy.

Smith, 48, is charged with rape, trafficking a person for sexual servitude, two counts of contributing to the unruliness of a minor and child molestation.

Wells, 23, is charged with trafficking a person for sexual servitude, rape, enticing a child for indecent purposes, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, pimping person under 18 years of age, pandering person under 18 years of age and interference with custody.

Sears, 22, is charged with rape and child molestation.

Police said 40-year-old Harold Poole is still on the run. He is wanted for rape, aggravated assault, trafficking a person for sexual servitude, two counts of contributing to the unruliness of a minor, aggravated child molestation and interference with custody

Atlanta Police Detective Tracy Lewis said the 15-year-old victim connected major dots in this investigation.

“She was absolutely wonderful,” Lewis said. “She is a very sweet young lady. She has a big future ahead of her. We just pray that she will be okay from this.”

On Feb. 29, police were called to the Children’s Hospital of Atlanta, where they spoke with a 15-year-old girl who had been missing since December.

The girl said she was trafficked in DeKalb County and Fulton County, police said.

Lewis said the teen found a way to escape.

“She actually went to a place of refuge,” Lewis said. “The person who she went to seek refugee from was very nice to her and called 911 for her.”

Investigators believe those arrested may have been involved in the trafficking of three others between the ages of 14 and 16.

Casey Benton, a human trafficking investigator at the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, said inter-department cooperation was essential to solving the case, as traffickers often move victims from place to place.

“Today, we stand united to send a message to traffickers: that if you victimize people in our community, we will find you, we will stop you and we will hold you accountable,” he said.
