1. Macy’s Flower Show

Celebrate the arrival of spring with the best flower exhibition in the city, which is open to the public for free.

The Macy’s Herald Square Flower Show, which begins on March 27th and end on April 10th. The exhibition includes over 30,000 different species of flowers and blossoming trees. It is a stunning sight to behold.

2. Easter Parade

It’s a one-of-a-kind experience to witness Fifth Avenue’s legendary Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival.

The event will take place on Easter Sunday (17 April 2022) from 10 AM to 4 PM.

From 49th Street, the parade proceeds along Fifth Avenue to 57th Street, where it concludes.

The greatest place to see the parade is at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, and if you want to participate in it, all you need is a distinctive Easter bonnet that you designed yourself.

In any case, you’ll want to join the masses for a nice Easter brunch at one of the nearby eateries, which will be plentiful this year.

If you visit New York City in April you can expect mixed weather, fewer crowds, lower hotel prices and cherry blossoms blooming. We’ve lived in NYC in April and we think it’s a great time of year for you to visit if you want to avoid overcrowding and save money, as long as you don’t mind risking cold temperatures.

In this guide we walk you through the 10 most important things you should know about visiting New York City in April based on our experiences.

Our NYC Experience

We lived in New York City between December 2020 and April 2021, and we’ve revisited many times since, including in April 2022. During our extensive time spent in the city we’ve seen and done almost everything there is to do. It’s one of our favorite places on the planet and we’ve written lots of NYC travel guides to help you plan various aspects of your visit.

What we love about New York in April is that the city is transitioning out of its cold and snowy winter season, green grass and cherry blossoms are bursting into color and the atmosphere begins to buzz once again. But it’s still the shoulder season, so you can pick up great deals on flights and hotels, and top attractions remain quiet, which is a huge deal! Read more about us .

New York City is one of the world’s most popular travel destinations, so naturally it attracts year round crowds. But some months are busier than others, and the good news for your visit in April is that it’s a transition month so you get some of the major benefits without most of the drawbacks, including crowds.

April is typically busier than March, but not as busy as May when the numbers really begin to increase. If you’re deciding between visiting NYC in spring or summer, you can rest assured that the crowds in April will be far fewer compared to the likes of July or August.

Our Experience : We found April to be almost perfect for exploring the city’s attractions and neighborhoods crowd-free and in reasonable weather conditions. There were no lines at observation decks or museums, we could walk straight into most restaurants and hotels had low occupancy rates, so they were priced more reasonably.

Annual Visitors

In 2019 New York City hosted 66.6 million tourists with roughly 1 in 5 visitors being international travelers. It was a record high but it marked the end of 10 years consistent growth because of the covid lockdowns in 2020.

This NYC tourism and conventions pdf shows that visitor numbers have steadily been returning since the end of the lockdowns, and it’s expected that 2024 will be the first year to surpass 2019 and become a new record year of tourism in New York City.

What Does That Mean For You?

Well, it means that NYC is going to be even more overrun by tourists in the years to come. Crowds will be bigger than ever at top attractions and hotels will likely increase prices as demand begins to offset supply. But visiting in the should season month of April means you should be just ahead of the rush.

New York City’s weather transitions from cold to cool in April, with a 10 degrees Fahrenheit increase in average high and low temperatures from the start to the end of the month. April is also the wettest month of the year in NYC, which means the risk of rainfall scuppering your plans is a factor to consider. And lastly, you’re very unlikely to see any snowfall in April, so you’d need to visit earlier in the year to see snow.

Our experience : During the month of April we’ve experienced lots of different weather systems in New York, including freezing cold but clear blue sky days, non-stop rainy days and beautifully warm days when shorts and t-shirts were perfect. So, the key is to pack lots of layers!

NYC April Temperatures

Here are the high, low and average New York City temperatures in April:

April 1st :

• High Temperature – 56°F (13°C)
• Average Temperature – 48°F (9°C)
• Low Temperature – 42°F (6°C)

April 30th :

• High Temperature – 67°F (19°C)
• Average Temperature – 59°F (15°C)
• Low Temperature – 51°F (11°C)

So as you can see, there’s a fairly significant increase in average temperatures throughout the month, which means visiting later in April will give you a better chance of warmer weather. To finish, one of our top tips to consider is that the grid-style streets in Manhattan are like wind tunnels, so when the wind picks up it can make the “real feel” temperature plummet significantly.

The magic combination of lower occupancy rates and lower average nightly costs for hotel rooms in Manhattan and Brooklyn is up there with the very best reasons to plan a vacation to New York City in April. There’s hundreds of hotels that will fill between June and September, but they’ll be much emptier during your trip in April, so you can take advantage of great deals.

Our experience : We’ve stayed at a lot of hotels in New York over the years, and we’ve found that it’s definitely a place that heavily inflates prices based on seasonality. In winter and through April, we were able to stay at quality hotels with excellent guest ratings for prices that we felt offered good value for money. Hotel Recommendations

If it’s going to be your first visit to New York, we recommend booking a hotel around Midtown Manhattan near Times Square, Bryant Park or the Empire State Building. This way you’ll have a central location, lots of transport links and countless places to eat out.

4. The Foodie Scene

April is a fantastic time to be out and about eating food in New York City. The weather is beginning to warm, which means outdoor dining becomes more comfortable and you’ll see the streets fill with tables outside restaurants and cafes. But it’s still quiet enough to get into most restaurants without reserving months in advance!

Three classic NYC foods you can’t miss include pizza, breakfast bagels and hotdogs from a street vendor. If you like food markets, don’t miss Smorgasburg , which is the largest weekly open air food market in America. Every weekend beginning in April, dozens of vendors set up food stalls in Williamsburg, Prospect Park and the World Trade Center.

Our experience : For us, it’s all about the classics. We love pizza and bagels, so we always try new places when we’re in town. And in April, we’ve always walked straight into any restaurant we liked the look of. It’s another huge bonus to visiting New York City in spring.

Restaurant Recommendations

Okay, New York City is home to some of the finest restaurants on the planet, and there’s thousands of cheap, expensive, unique, fun, hidden or exclusive places you can eat at. So we think you’d have to live in NYC for a good few years before being able to profess that you’re an expert on food in the city.

But we can offer you the following suggestions to consider based on our experiences so far:

• Italian – Carmine’s Italian (Times Square)
• New American – Gramercy Tavern (Flatiron)
• Ukrainian – Veselka (Ukrainian Village)
• Italian – Rubirosa (Nolita)
• Korean – Thursday Kitchen (East Village)
• Steak – Keens Steakhouse (Midtown South)
• Deli – Katz’s Delicatessen (Lower East Side)
• Bakery – Dominique Ansel (SoHo)

5. Expenses

We’ve been traveling the world non-stop since 2018, so we’ve visited hundreds of cities, towns, national parks and excursions. And we think the whole “New York City is so expensive” thing is a little bit of a myth. Sure, it can be outrageously expensive if you make it that way, but it can also be done on the cheap.

And in April, you certainly can visit NYC without breaking the bank. It’s a great time of year to book cheap flights with low-cost airlines domestically or internationally. We already discussed cheaper hotels earlier but that’s another huge factor. And flash deals tend to run on attractions and broadway shows in the quieter months, so you can pick up discounted prices.

Our experience : During our most recent April trip to New York we booked cheap flights, stayed at a great hotel for reasonable rates and visited lots of attractions with our NY Sightseeing Pass which also had promotional rates because it was still the shoulder season. Overall, we don’t think NYC is any more expensive than other major cities like San Francisco, Tokyo or London.

How Much Spending Money Do You Need?

Well, we think everyone visiting New York City arrives with a different budget, goals and itinerary ideas. There’s no one size fits all budget calculator because you might want to eat and drink your way through the city, or you might want to just visit attractions and museums, or you might want to keep costs down.

But generally speaking, let’s say the average couple spends the following (excluding flights):

• $300/night on a hotel
• $150/day on food
• $150/day on attractions
• $50/day on miscellaneous things

So we think the average couple planning a 3-night and 4-day trip to NYC would need around $2,300 USD. But remember, you absolutely can do it much cheaper than that.

Here’s a few ways you can save money:

• Book a hotel offering free breakfast to cut out one meal a day
• Eat cheap pizza slices, hotdogs or truck stand food for lunch (not the healthiest but cheap)
• Don’t splurge on dinner, keep it simple instead
• Book a cheaper than average hotel (there are highly rated hotels at lower prices)
• Stay away from alcohol, the drink price + tax + tip adds up very quickly!
• Stick to the free attractions like Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park
• Walk instead of using the subway every time

Finally, we recommend you buy an attractions pass like New York Sightseeing Pass or New York CityPASS to save as much as 30-40% if you plan to visit lots of observation decks, museums and attractions.

6. Things To Do

Another great reason to visit New York in April is being able to do all of the same things you could do in summer, but without the crowds. So in terms of attractions, you wouldn’t be missing out on anything except nicer weather. And it’s also a wonderful time to explore New York’s neighborhoods because they’re not overrun by tourists, the air is crisp and the famously pungent smells of summer haven’t yet begun.

Our experience : We’ve been up the observation decks when they’re busy and it’s hard to enjoy the experience. Not being able to get a ferry time slot for the Statue of Liberty is frustrating, lining up just to get into a museum grows tiresome and standing in even longer lines just to get a bagel is worse yet! But in April we walked straight into everything with no line at all, which made a huge difference.

Top NYC Attractions

There are so many fun things to do when you visit New York, but here are some of the most iconic:

• Walk around the famous NYC neighborhoods (free)
• Soak up the atmosphere walking Brooklyn Bridge at sunset and night (free)
• Explore the best spots in Central Park (free)
• Take the ferry to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (cheap)
• Visit several of the best museums in NYC (cheap)
• Go up one or two of the best NYC observation decks (moderately cheap)
• Watch a broadway show (expensive – but often cheaper in April)

7. Cherry Blossoms

Seeing vibrant cherry blossoms bursting into life might be the reason you’re visiting New York in April, and we can’t argue with your reasoning! You can explore various parks and green spaces across the city to see beautiful cherry trees erupting into a pink light show.

Our experience : We made a point of finding as many cherry blossom spots as we could the last time we were in New York in April. Naturally, we thought Central Park would be the best place (and it was great!), but actually the New York Botanical Gardens in The Bronx had the most amazing display. And it was full of other lovely flowers so we highly recommend you visit in spring.

8. Central Park

Central Park is one of the most famous green spaces on the planet and we think it’s a must-visit for your trip in April. You already know there’ll be cherry blossoms in Central Park but here’s where you can find them according to Central Park :

“The cherry blossom trees in Central Park can be found mainly between 72nd Street and 96th Street, with the highest concentrations around the Reservoir , Cherry Hill , Pilgrim Hill , Great Lawn , Cedar Hill , and the area just south of Cedar Hill between 74th and 77th Streets.”

Our experience : Central Park is one of our favorite spots in the city and we always have a walk around no matter the season. We had a magical snow day in the depths of winter which felt like we were in a movie, but in April we actually found a lovely cherry blossom spot near Bethesda Fountain so don’t miss that area.

Where To Go

Central Park is gigantic and diverse, and there’s a lot more to do outside of photographing cherry blossoms. Remember that The Met, Guggenheim and American Museum of Natural History are on either side of Central Park. And if you only have to do one we recommend The Met .

Follow this exact path through Central Park:

• Wollman Ice Rink
• Bethesda Terrace
• Wagner’s Cove
• Strawberry Fields
• Belvedere Castle

You’ll end up a few minutes walk from The Met. And that’s how you plan! Most tourists will only visit the southern part of Central Park. But we encourage you to explore further up, as long as you have enough time on your itinerary.

9. Photography

New York City has one of the most iconic urban landscapes on Earth, and we’re confident you’ll be endlessly impressed by towering skyscrapers and unique architecture. But walking around New York with a camera is both a blessing and a curse because there’s a photo to be taken at every turn, every building and every iconic landmark!

Our experience : We’re travel photographers and NYC is exceptionally photogenic, so we’ve taken thousands of photos in the city and we’re sure there’ll be a few thousand more to come! We think any month is a good month for photography in New York City, so don’t forget your camera.

• Much quieter at observation decks and top attractions
• Cherry blossoms scattered across the city
• Diverse range of weather including clouds, sun, rain etc
• Steam billowing out of vents and drains on cold mornings

10. Packing

Packing for a trip to New York City in April can be tricky because the weather and temperatures can be extremely changeable. You’re likely going to experience cold, mild, warm and cold again throughout the day. And let’s face it, this is NYC, so you’re going to want options!

Some important questions to ask yourself include how much you plan to go out drinking and partying, how many classy restaurants you plan to visit and if you’ll be using the hotel gym at all. Then throw in your casual daytime clothes for walking (considering the changeable weather) and you’ll have a pretty full suitcase.

Our experience : We always try to pack multi-purpose clothes that can be dressed up or dressed down when we visit NYC. And we always walk as much as we can, so we wear running shoes with lots of spring and bounce during the day.

• Underwear and socks
• Shorts, pants, leggings, dresses and jeans
• Moisture wicking t-shirts
• Light and medium layers
• Sweaters and hoodies
• Smart casual gear for dinner and drinks
• Even smarter clothes for upscale restaurants
• Sunglasses and hats
• Heavy coat, gloves and scarf for sunrises and sunsets
• At least 2 pairs of shoes for walking and evenings
• Camera, lenses, tripod and plenty of data storage

After that it comes down to your personal travel style. Some people like to dress up smart for walking around the city, whereas others go all out for comfort. There’s no right or wrong in New York, everyone just does whatever they feel comfortable doing!

The Morgan Conclusion

April is a fantastic time to visit New York City because you’ll benefit from a wonderful blend of affordable hotel prices and crowd-free attractions. Plus, you can see cherry blossoms and save money when compared to the summer months.

As far as we’re concerned, the only downside is changeable weather conditions and having to pack more clothes as a result. So if you’re happy to take on the risk, we can tell you from experience that NYC is refreshingly quiet in April, and you’ll have a better time for it.

Comedy at Stonewall ; The Stonewall Inn; Apr 1; $5, at the door $10, plus two-drink minimum The always delightful Chrissie Mayr hosts this monthly showcase of stellar queer and queer-appealing comics at the historic Stonewall. Get down to killer sets from Chewy May, Kaytlin Bailey, Kendra Cunningham, Oscar Aydin and Rich Kiamco. 

Stand Up and Take Your Clothes Off Kraine Theater; Apr 2; $10, at the door $15 This epic meeting of the comedic and ecdysiast arts challenges stand-up comics to try their hands at cheeky strip-tease, while their burlesque buddies take the mic and bare it all with comedy. Watch as hosts Kerry Feehan and Jilliane Gill welcome Tiny D, Fem Appeal, Sweet Lorraine, Vada James and Ginger Twist to work it on stage at this benefit for the American Civil Liberties Union. 

Comics as a Force for Social Change ; Greenlight Bookstore; Apr 3; free Illustrator John Jennings, writer Damian Duffy and author Thi Bui explore how comics can inspire social change by giving underrepresented communities a voice and shaking up cultural norms in this free discussion in Fort Greene.

Punderdome 3000 ; Littlefield; Apr 4; $8–$10 Jo Firestone and her Rodney Dangerfield impersonator father, Fred, host this beloved competition, in which the first 18 individuals or duos to sign up at the door attempt to pun-up each other’s spontaneously produced wordplay. Winners are determined by the Human Clap-O-Meter and go home with a Mystery Box prize.

Hidden Fences ; Littlefield; Apr 14; $8, at the door $10 First, it was a verbal gaff at the Golden Globes. Then, it became a viral meme lampooning white Hollywood's incapability of comprehending that multiple films could exist starring black actors. Now, it's a riotous play by Jordan Temple, mashing up the plots of  Hidden Figures  and  Fences  and taking on all the hypocrisy of Black History Month in 2017. Get ready for some vicious satire. 

Ali Wong ; The Town Hall; Apr 28, 29; $45 With the verbal fury of Nicki Minaj and the fearless attitude of Joan Rivers, Wong made her name with her 2016 Netflix special  Baby Cobra , which she performed seven months pregnant, taking on menstruation, Sheryl Sandberg and sex with Asian men. Now, the  Fresh Off the Boa t scribe and  American Housewife  co-star attacks the Town Hall for two sets of merciless stand-up. Catch her now before she’s selling out arenas.

Katina and Becky Have It All ; Peoples Improv Theater; Apr 4; $7 Any great buddy comedy requires two epic leads. Witness greatness as Becky Yamamoto and Katina Corrao each take the stage with their respective solo shows, "Funky Cold Katina" and "My So Called Loif."

Head to Hebro's wild and raucous party for gay Jews and the boys who love them, and you might find yourself adding a sexy story to your personal Passover narrative. Queer Art Organics ; Dixon Place; Apr 11; free Local performance poet Aimee Herman welcomes some of the city's loveliest LGBTQ writers and performers to try out their latest work at this monthly showcase. This month's edition features stirring readings from Rebecca Perez, Kyle Daileda, and Heather Hudgins.

80s Roller Disco ; various locations; Apr 8; $160, Long Island guests $75 Head on a special trip to the old-timey United Skates of America roller rink in Long Island, where you'll get to dance and skate to ’80s jams, dine on pizza and enjoy an open bar. Meet at 45th St and Tenth Ave to hop on the bus ride. 

Off the Binary ; Bluestockings; 2pm; free Bluestockings welcomes people who identify outside of traditional gender norms to share feelings, questions and beliefs and meet new friends. 

Delicious food and drink opportunities

Smorgasburg ; Apr 1; Free After hibernating indoors for the winter, Smorgasburg is finally moving the party outdoors with the opening of the Kent St location on Saturday, and Prospect Park on Sunday. As the king of food festivals, there will be more than 100 vendors in total, and past participants have included Kimchi Smoke doling out pork belly in glazed donut, mocha cardamom fudgesicles from Whimsy and Spics and frozen cheesecake pops from Ruby Zaar Baked. The market will be open from 11am-6pm every weekend.  

Hester Street Fair ; April 15; Free It’s the opening day for the Lower East Side market that combines food and flair in the community-driven spectacle. First-time entrepreneurs and established vendors like Macaron Parlour, Melt Bakery and Cheeky Sandwich have strutted their stuff for its weekly Saturday market. 

The Bloody Mary Festival ; April 9; $55 This year's Bloody Mary Festival features Brooklyn vendors like Insa, Catfish and A&E Supply Co, offering their tricked-out versions of the tomato-juice cocktail for attendees to sample and eventually vote on for the People’s Choice Award. There will also be a panel of industry judges picking their favorite Brooklyn-based Bloody. True to form, a bagel bar and cheese station will be included in the price of admission to soak up all that booze.  

Bacon and Beer Classic ; April 29-30, $69-$139 The multi-city event lets guests nosh creative twists on bacon-infused eats while gulping down some brews. This year, get the swiney strips from purveyors like NYC-based restaurants likes Blue Smoke, Bareburger and Salt & Bone. And while the creations themselves have yet to be announced, last year’s included bacon banh mi in a deep-fried bun, maple bacon bourbon ice cream and Cinn-Bun-Bacon. 

NYC Hot Sauce Expo ; April 22-23, $10 general admission, BBQ Platter $40, super VIP $100 Get ready to get all hot and bothered this month for the NYC Hot Sauce Expo. Try different varieties of the spicy sauce from 45 vendors throughout the country and around the world, including New Zealand and Belize. Wash the flames down with craft beer and spicy food. During the event, winners of the Hot Sauce Hall of Fame as well as the Bloody Mary mix down competition are crowned.

Epic concerts and shows  

Stanley Clarke  Blue Note; Apr 1–6; bar $30, table $45 Virtuoso bassist Stanley Clarke is a master of the instrument in just about any jazz genre: from bebop gigs assisting the likes of Dexter Gordon and Horace Silver to his own fusion work of arena rock proportions. He settles into a residency here with his Stanley Clarke Band to celebrate the release of a new album.

Xiu Xiu + Dreamcrusher  Brooklyn Night Bazaar; Apr 6; $13 Two cutting edge artists of the electronic avant-garde pair here for a night of experimental noise: Jamie Stewart's bleak pop deconstructionism as Xiu Xiu and Luwayne Glass's self-described "queer nihilist revolt music" as Dreamcrusher. 

New Order  Radio City Music Hall; Apr 13; $55.50–$95.50 The seminal English postpunk outfit spawned from Joy Division plays Radio City in support of its latest album,  Music Complete,  which ranges from wistful airs to thumping disco,

Benjamin Clementine  Carnegie Hall; Apr 13; $30 Songman Benjamin Clementine has led a meteoric ascent: from homeless busker to internationally acclaimed phenom. He brings his captivating voice and emotive piano to a special Carnegie Hall gig where—fingers crossed—he may debut brand-new tunes from the follow-up to his 2015 Mercury-Prize-winning debut,  At Least For Now .

The Decemberists +Julien Baker  Brooklyn Steel; Apr 17–19; $45 Quaintly antiquarian indie stars the Decemberists present their nerd-core stylings at Brooklyn Steel's inaugural show, a massive new industrial-chic venue opening in Williamsburg. Julien Baker airs her quietly resilient lyrics and spare guitar chords in the opening set. 

Major movie and theater premieres

Colossal Talk about a sledgehammer metaphor: When aimless party girl Gloria (Anne Hathaway) slips from casual drinker into full-blown alcoholic, her fractured psyche somehow conjures a thousand-foot lizard in South Korea that destroys anything it touches. That's the starting premise for this determinedly bizarre, psychologically inquisitive and—in the end—rather wonderful black comedy. Colossal opens Apr 7.

Graduation Bound for Cambridge University on a full scholarship, a Romanian teen only needs to pass her high-school final exams, a mere formality. But when her concentration is suddenly bobbled by an incident beyond her control, her dad intercedes in the grading system, plying regents with favors. Filmmaker Cristian Mungiu’s latest has plenty of ethical compromise to go around. Graduation opens Apr 7.

The Fate of the Furious Not even the death of a leading cast member can put the brakes on this hot-rod action series (we'll all be watching Fast 50 in our retirement homes and Vin Diesel will look exactly the same). This time, the gang heads to NYC, Iceland and Havana, with Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray calling the shots. The Fate of the Furious opens Apr 14.

The Lost City of Z Photographed by genius cinematographer Darius Khondji ( Seven ), James Gray’s latest is a magnificent, leisurely paced take on Amazonian adventure, loaded with natural catastrophes, mutinous colleagues and tons of excitement for old-school movie snobs who secretly love Raiders of the Lost Ark . It’s as epic as films come. The Lost City of Z opens Apr 14.

The Circle Emma Watson joins a mysterious internet company co-founded by Tom Hanks and Patton Oswalt—those two guys alone should give any new employee pause. The original novel comes from Dave Eggers, but we’re even more excited by the presence of writer-director James Ponsoldt, adapting the book and spending the capital he earned on The End of the Tour on another literary (and timely) project. The Circle opens Apr 28.

Fantastic dance performances  

The Joffrey Ballet:  Romeo & Juliet  at the David H. Koch Theater; Mar 29–Apr 2; $50–$155 Having ditched New York for Chicago in 1995, the Joffrey leaps back into our arms with Krzysztof Pastor’s account of Shakespeare’s teen-lust tragedy, the venerable ballet company's first NYC performance in more than two decades. 

Centre National de Danse Contemporaine-Angers  at the Joyce Theater; Apr 4–9; $26–$46 After an acclaimed 2015 presentation of works by Merce Cunningham, France's CNDC returns to the Joyce with another program of the late avant-garde dance master's works, guided by artistic director and longtime Cunningham apostle Robert Swinston 

Scottish Ballet  at the Joyce Theater; Apr 11–16; $26–$56 Founded 60 years ago, Scotland's national dance company finally makes its New York debut with a bill that includes Bryan Arias's  Motion of Displacement  and Christopher Bruce's  Ten Poems  (set to poetry by Dylan Thomas, read by Richard Burton).

New York City Ballet  at the David H. Koch Theater; April 18–May 28; $30–$175 NYCB's spring season at Lincoln Center begins with two programs of short works by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins (Apr 18–23), then moves on to its centerpiece: The Here/Now Festival, 10 shows that comprises 43 recent ballets by 22 choreographers.

Okwui Okpokwasili:  Poor People’s TV Room  at   New York Live Arts; Apr 19–29; $15–$35 In a dance-theater work created with director-designer Peter Born, the striking Okpokwasili investigates cultural narratives, mythmaking and collective amnesia about women's resistance movements in Nigeria.

Jimena Paz: Yellow  at   The Chocolate Factory; Apr 21–30; $20 Paz draws on memories of her childhood in Argentina to explore questions of foreignness, memory and authorship in a solo dance performance created in collaboration with Ralph Lemon and Vicky Shick. Performances begin exactly two hours before sundown.

Marvelous theater    

War Paint ; Nederland Theatre; ongoing Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole are two titans of American cosmetics in this diva-licious new musical, from the creators of Grey Gardens.  

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ; Lunt-Fontanne Theatre; ongoing You know it as a classic kids’ book, a great movie and now it’s returned as a candy-colored musical. Christian Borle ( Smash ) stars as Willy.

Groundhog Day ; August Wilson Theatre; ongoing Got a sense of deja vu? You’re not the only one—the Bill Murray movie has been turned into a musical comedy by the puckish talents behind Matilda .

Hello, Dolly! Shubert Theatre; ongoing  The divine Bette Midler stars in a revival of the splashy, beloved Jerry Herman musical about a matchmaker who knows how to live and love. 

Six Degrees of Separation ; Ethel Barrymore Theater; through July 16 John Guare’s incisive social drama looks at race, privilege and trust in New York City. The cast is headed by formidable TV star Allison Janney.

Spectacular art shows  

“Irving Penn: Centennial” Metropolitan Museum of Art; Apr 15–July 30 , suggested donation $25, seniors $17, students $12, members and children under 12 free One of the giants of 20th-century photography, Irving Penn (1917–2009) was known for his fashion photography, portraits and still life. His stunning large format, black-and-white images of models and celebrities helped to define the look of midcentury America. This retrospective mounted on the occasion of Penn’s 100th birthday features some 200 examples of his work, which remains as indelible now as when he first began to create it more than 60 years ago.

Sat 5:45–7:45pm pay what you wish The raw and the cooked is ongoing theme in the work of this year’s recipient of the fashion brand’s annual $100,000 arts award. Anicka Yi’s sculptural installations explore the boundary between biology and technology, often employing such unorthodox materials as tempura fried flowers, peta-dish grown molds and funguses to create futuristic forms that resemble lab experiments gone wrong.

“Carol Rama: Antibodies” The New Museum Of Contemporary Art; Apr 26–Sept 10, $16, seniors $14, students $10, children under 18 free. Thu 7–9pm pay as you wish with a suggested minimum of $2 . Remarkably, Rama, a self-taught Italian artist, lived to the ripe old age of 103, and the energy that sustained her for so long is evident in the aggressively erotic drawings drawings that were her métier. Much of her long career was spent in obscurity, though in the last decade of her life she received major recognition in the form of museum shows and the award of a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the 2003 Venice Biennale. This is her her first major survey in the United States. 

“Nari Ward: G.O.A.T., again” Socrates Sculpture Par; Apr 29–Sept 4, free Six sculptures based on the eponymous animal by this African-American artist are on view in this outdoor installation, the title for which is actually an acronym for “Greatest Of All Time,” a favorite expression of the legendary Muhammed Ali, who used it to describe himself with some frequency. According to the artist, the exhibit—his first solo in an institutional setting—will explore “how hubris creates misplaced expectations in American cultural politics.”

“Louise Lawler: WHY PICTURES NOW” Museum of Modern Art (MoMA); Apr 30–July 30, $25, seniors $18, students $14, children under 16 free. For discounts, order tickets in advance at moma.org. Film tickets free with museum admission; screenings-only admission $12, seniors $10, students $8, children under 16 free Associated with the Pictures Generation, Lawler was also one of the authors of Institutional Critique, a Conceptualist genre that made museums and other constituents of the art establishment the subject of a deconstructive inquiry. In Lawler’s case, that entailed photos of other artist’s works hanging in museums, storage rooms and the home of collectors. Elegant and cooly composed, Lawler’s images demystified the art object by showing how it lives as a commodity and piece of decor. MoMA surveys her career, which spans nearly 40 years.

April is a fantastic month to travel in New York. While it might still be cold on some days, the weather is quickly warming up and spring is in the air throughout the state.

New York International Auto Show in New York City – March 29-April 7

If you love cars, the New York International Auto Show is the event to check out in New York this April.

Held annually in New York City since 1900, this show brings together car manufacturers from around the world showcasing everything from practical family vehicles to luxury cars. And since no sales are allowed at the show, you can browse the cars without having to worry about pushy salespeople.

The event will an electric vehicle test track, thrill rides, antique automobiles, celebrity cars, and more.

Thousand Islands Spring Boat Show in Clayton – April 5-7

Clayton, home of the fabulous Antique Boat Museum , is hosting its annual Spring Boat Show in early April. If you are thinking of warmer weather and want to see what’s new in the boating world, this is a show you won’t want to miss.

During the event, you’ll be able to browse a variety of different types of watercraft and accessories from dozens of vendors. There will also be boater safety courses offered during the show.

Syracuse Wine Festival in Syracuse – April 6

Wine aficionados won’t want to miss the annual Syracuse Wine Festival being held at the CNY Regional Market this April.

During the event, there are two three-hour wine-tasting sessions, plus a special VIP session. Wines will be available from producers throughout the state, and you can both sample wine and buy full bottles of your favorites.

Total Solar Eclipse in New York – April 8

On Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross over much of Upstate New York. Cities like Jamestown, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Plattsburgh will be directly in line to see this amazing event.

If you can, I highly recommend visiting one of these areas to experience this event in person. However, if you can’t, the rest of the state will see a partial eclipse, which should also be incredible.

So, no matter where you are in New York, get a pair of eclipse glasses (to keep your eyes safe) and stare up at the sky!

CNY Maple Festival in Cortland – April 13-14

Now in its 52nd year, the CNY Maple Festival in Cortland celebrates the delicious products made from maple trees.

During the event, you will not only be able to see how maple syrup is made, but there are also many other unique activities including a pancake eating contest, races, and a chainsaw carving demonstration.

Herb & Wine Festival on the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail – April 27-28

The 31st Annual Herb and Wine Festival will be happening along the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail at the end of April.

At the 10 participating wineries, visitors will be able to try a sample of food and wine to go with it. Then, they can take home potted herbs or vegetables featured in each recipe, along with a recipe card to make the dish at home.

Of course, there is also the chance to try even more delicious Finger Lakes wine.

One of the most famous music halls in the United States, "the Apollo" started as a burlesque theater in 1914. By the 1930s, it transformed into a concert hall that helped launch the career of several black musicians. A then-unknown Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson (with the Jackson 5) and Stevie Wonder all performed on the Apollo stage during an Amateur Night competition. If you're in Harlem on a Wednesday you can still go to Amateur Night, an experience some previous travelers highly recommend.

Metropolitan Opera House Metropolitan Opera House

Stroll through the courtyard of the Metropolitan Opera House even if you're not going inside for a performance. Every element of this opulent building – from the limestone architecture, to the lobby's glittering chandelier, to the acoustics in the concert hall – is gorgeous. Travelers call this opera house a feast for the eyes and ears. Tickets are notoriously expensive (as much as several hundred dollars for the best seats), but the sticker shock evaporates quickly if you're into performing arts. You can try to score a same-day ticket at a discounted rate, plus there are discounts for senior citizens.

The Metropolitan Opera House features spring performances by the American Ballet Theatre and fall and winter performances by the Met Opera Company. Showtimes and ticket prices vary by performance and seating, so check the Met Opera's website for additional details. You'll find the opera house at Lincoln Center Plaza on Manhattan's Upper West Side – take the 1 train to 66th Street.

Radio City Music Hall Radio City Music Hall

It's where Ella Fitzgerald pined for the man she loved, the Rolling Stones couldn't get no satisfaction and Lady Gaga had a "Bad Romance." Among performers, there's no New York concert venue that's quite like Radio City Music Hall. Not only is it the largest indoor theater in the world, its marquee spans a full city block. Opened in 1932, the theater is a New York City Landmark. Today, the theater welcomes musical performers like Ben Platt and Lil Nas X, as well as comedians like Chris Rock.

If you're in town any dates between November and January, consider attending the famous Radio City Christmas Spectacular, which stars the Rockettes. According to recent visitors who attended a show, there's not a bad seat in the house. If you're not able to attend a performance, consider signing up for the hourlong Radio City Stage Door Tour. The guided tour includes stops at areas of the historic venue not typically seen by the public, such as Radio City’s secret apartment, The Roxy Suite. You'll also an enjoy an in-depth history lesson about the stage and its iconic art deco design. The tour concludes with a meet-and-greet with a Radio City Rockette. Tours are offered daily starting at 9:30 a.m.; tickets cost $42 per adult and $38 per kid 12 and younger.  

The Battery The Battery free

Also known as The Battery, this 25-ace park sits at the very southern tip of Manhattan Island, and offers a green respite from the steel and concrete of lower Manhattan. The park, named after artillery batteries that protected the settlement in the 17th century, is popular with visitors because of its views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty . 

The park is home to perennial gardens, bike paths, grand lawns, an urban farm and a unique carousel, known as the SeaGlass Carousel. On the carousel, riders sit within iridescent fish and glide through a 360-degree aquatic adventure. The carousel’s bioluminescent design honors the waterfront site as well as another landmark, the Castle Clinton, one of the country’s earliest aquariums. 

Coney Island Coney Island

Known as the "the People's Playground," this famous amusement area in Brooklyn has witnessed an illustrious past. In the early 1900s, Coney Island enticed New Yorkers to visit with its bathing pavilions, seaside resorts and amusement park. The Great Depression took its toll on the fun-loving spot, causing many attractions to close. But after years of economic instability, Coney Island has reclaimed its place on the Brooklyn map, with a fresh roster of eateries and entertainment (including a July Fourth hot dog-eating contest and an annual Mermaid Parade ) found along the boardwalk. Coney Island now features several separate amusement parks, as well as a museum, which hosts a variety of exhibits and shows.

According to recent visitors, Coney Island is a worthwhile trip in the summer if you have the time and are traveling with young kids who would enjoy the rides. If you're not up for indulging your inner thrill-seeker, you can also walk along the beach, which spans nearly 3 miles and features several sports courts, as well as playgrounds. A walk along the iconic Riegelmann Boardwalk is just as memorable, according to recent visitors.

Chrysler Building Chrysler Building free

Technically, the Chrysler Building is an office building open Monday through Friday, but you don't need to go inside to appreciate its aesthetic appeal. Recent visitors praised the building's unique architectural style (though a few wished you could still go inside to admire its intricate lobby and elevators).

Built in 1930, the Chrysler had a short-lived run as the tallest building in the city, before it was usurped of its title by the Empire State Building . Nevertheless, this 1,046-foot-high skyscraper remains a favorite among New Yorkers for its classic art deco style. And unlike the Empire State, at this site you won't need an expensive entry ticket, a strong stomach to stand soaring heights or patience for long lines to see what all the fuss is about. You can behold the building's menacing gargoyles and triangular openings from many spots in Manhattan. Though the lobby is currently closed to visitors, there have been talks of building an observation deck, though none is available at this time.

Grapes & Hops Festival (Chautauqua-Allegheny)

4th Annual Go Fly a Kite Over Babylon (Long Island)

Hanami Nights at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (New York City)

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path.

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

To see totality — the moment when the moon fully blocks the sun — you need to be in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

Luckily, NASA made a map to pinpoint just where you should be, and when you should be there.

On April 8, North America will experience its second total solar eclipse in seven years. The moon will glide over the surface of our sun, casting a shadow over a swath of Earth below. Along this path, the world will turn dark as night.

Skywatchers in Mexico will be the first to see the eclipse on the mainland. From there, the show will slide north, entering the United States through Texas, then proceeding northeast before concluding for most people off the coast of Canada.

Why eclipses happen is simple: the moon comes between us and the sun. But they are also complicated. So if you’ve forgotten all of your eclipse facts, tips and how-to’s since 2017, we’re here to explain it for you.

But before we dive in, there is one thing to know that is more important than anything else: It is never safe to look directly at the sun during an eclipse (except for the few moments when the moon has fully obscured its surface). At all other times, watch the event through protective eye equipment . Read on to learn about how to watch an eclipse safely.

What is a total solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon orients itself between Earth and the sun, shielding the solar surface from our view.

In cosmic terms, it is unusual that this happens: the moon is about 400 times smaller than the sun, but it is about 400 times closer to us. That means that when these two celestial bodies are aligned, they appear to be the same size in the sky.

What other types of eclipses are there?

Annular solar eclipses occur when the moon is farther from Earth and appears too small to completely shield the sun’s surface. Instead, the outer part of the solar disk remains uncovered — a “ring of fire” in the sky.

Partial solar eclipses happen when Earth, the moon and the sun are imperfectly aligned. The moon only obscures a chunk of the sun. There will be two in 2025.

Earth can also get between the moon and the sun, creating a lunar eclipse. This can be observed once or twice a year .

How dark will it be during the eclipse?

In any given place along the eclipse path , the event will last around two hours or more.

The event will commence with a partial solar eclipse, as the moon takes a small bite out of the sun’s edge, then consumes more and more of its surface. According to NASA , this can last anywhere from 70 to 80 minutes.

The phase of the eclipse where the moon has completely blocked the sun’s surface is called totality. This is the only time the event can be viewed with the naked eye.

The length of totality varies by location. In April, some places will experience this phase for more than four minutes; others, for only one to two minutes.

During totality, the sky will get dark as night and the temperature will drop. Wispy white strings of light from the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will suddenly be visible. Lucky viewers may even spot a thin, reddish-pink circle around the edge of the moon. That’s the chromosphere, an atmospheric layer below the sun’s corona. Its color comes from the presence of hydrogen throughout the layer.

After totality, the sun will slowly peek out from behind the moon again — another partial eclipse that will last the same amount of time as the first one. The moon will recede until the sun is back to normal brightness in our sky.

How can I watch the solar eclipse safely?

In general, avoid looking directly at the sun without special equipment to protect your eyes. Inexpensive options for watching the eclipse include paper solar viewers and glasses. If you are using equipment purchased for a past solar eclipse, make sure to inspect it. Toss anything with scratches or other signs of damage.

According to NASA , it is not safe to look at the sun through any optical device while using paper glasses or viewers. To watch the eclipse through cameras, binoculars or telescopes, buy a special solar filter.

The only time you can view a solar eclipse with the naked eye is during the moments of totality. Once the moon begins to reveal the surface of the sun again, return to watching the event through protective equipment to avoid injury.

What happens if I look at the eclipse without protection?

In general, staring directly at the sun, even for a few seconds, can cause permanent damage to your eyes . This can range from blurry or distorted vision to something even more serious, like blind spots. Because there are no pain receptors in the retina, you won’t feel it while it’s happening.

The same is true during an eclipse — except during the brief moments of totality, when the moon has hidden the face of the sun. At all other times, use protective eye equipment to view the event.

What do I do if I can’t find eclipse glasses?

If it’s too late to get glasses or viewers, there’s always a do-it-yourself option: a pinhole camera to indirectly experience the eclipse. You can create one using cardstock , a cardboard box , a kitchen strainer or even your fingers . These designs project an image of the eclipse onto the ground or some other surface that is safe to look at.

Where are the best places to watch the eclipse?

The total eclipse will sweep across large portions of Mexico, the United States and eastern Canada. For the most dramatic show, it’s best to experience the eclipse along the path of totality , which is where the moon will completely blot out the sun.

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada. Viewers outside the path of the total eclipse will see a partial eclipse, if the sky is clear .

Viewers near Mazatlán, a beach town on the Pacific shoreline of Mexico, will be the first place to experience totality on North America’s mainland. Various sites in Mexico along the eclipse’s path will experience the longest duration of totality — as long as four minutes and 29 seconds.

Cities across the United States, including Dallas, Indianapolis and Cleveland, will most likely be hot spots for the upcoming eclipse. Other notable locations include Carbondale, Ill., which also saw totality during the solar eclipse in 2017; small towns west of Austin, Texas, which are projected to have some of the best weather in the country along the eclipse path; and Niagara Falls, if the skies are clear. Six provinces of Canada are in the path of totality, but many of them have a very cloudy outlook.

When does the eclipse begin and end?

The show begins at dawn, thousands of miles southwest of the Pacific shore of Mexico. The moon starts to conceal the sun near Mazatlán at 9:51 a.m. local time. Viewers near Mazatlán will experience totality at 11:07 a.m. for four minutes and 20 seconds.

Then the moon’s shadow will swoop through Mexico, crossing over the Texas border at 1:10 p.m. Eastern time. Totality in the United States will start at 2:27 p.m. and end at 3:33 p.m. Eastern time.

Canadians will experience the solar eclipse in the afternoon for nearly three hours. The eclipse concludes beyond Canada’s boundaries when the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean.

What time is the eclipse in New York, Texas, Illinois, Mexico, Canada and other locations?

How long will the eclipse last?

The duration of totality depends on how far a given location on Earth is from the moon. Places with the longest totality are closest to the moon and farther from the sun. The speed of the lunar shadow is slowest over spots with the longest totality.

In April, the longest period of totality will occur over Durango, a state in Mexico, for a total of four minutes and 29 seconds. Along the centerline, the location of shortest totality on land is on the eastern coast of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada, for about two minutes and 54 seconds. But totality is even shorter along the edges of the total eclipse path; in some places, it lasts less than a minute.

How fast does the eclipse move?

Solar eclipses may seem to happen slowly, but the moon’s shadow is racing across the surface of Earth. Exact speeds vary by location. Eclipse calculators estimate the shadow will move between about 1,560 m.p.h. and 1,600 m.p.h. through Mexico, and more than 3,000 m.p.h. by the time it exits the United States. The eclipse will reach speeds exceeding 6,000 m.p.h. over the Atlantic Ocean.

When was the last total solar eclipse in the United States?

According to the American Astronomical Society , total solar eclipses happen once every year or so, but they can only be viewed along a narrow path on Earth’s surface. Many occur over water or other places that can be difficult to reach. A given location will experience totality once in about 400 years.

But some places get lucky: Carbondale, a college town in southern Illinois, saw the total solar eclipse in the United States on Aug. 21, 2017, and will experience another one this April. San Antonio experienced an annular eclipse last October, and is also in the path of totality for this year’s eclipse.

Do other planets experience solar eclipses?

Yes, any planet in our solar system with a moon can experience a solar eclipse. In February, a Martian rover captured Phobos , one of the red planet’s moons, transiting the sun.

The moons on other planets, though, appear either smaller or larger than the sun in the sky . Only Earth has a moon just the right size and at just the right distance to produce the unique effects of totality.

How will things on Earth change during the eclipse?

As the eclipse approaches its maximum phase, the air will get cooler, the sky will grow dimmer, shadows will sharpen and you might notice images of crescents — tiny projections of the eclipse — within them. Along the path of totality, the world will go dark while the moon inches toward perfect alignment with Earth and the sun.

Animals will also react to the solar eclipse. Bees stop buzzing , birds stop whistling and crickets begin chirping. Some pets may express confusion . Even plants are affected, scientists found after the solar eclipse in 2017 . They have diminished rates of photosynthesis and water loss similar to, though not as extreme as, what happens at night.

What’s the difference between experiencing a solar eclipse at 99 percent compared with a total eclipse?

Patricia Reiff, a physicist at Rice University who has traveled for 25 eclipses and counting, says that if you are in a place where you’d see a 99 percent partial eclipse, it’s worth safely traveling a little farther to experience a total eclipse.

“Ninety-nine percent is cool,” she said, but “totality is oh-my-God crazy.”

Even at 99 percent eclipse, the sky won’t darken — you won’t be able to see stars or planets. Changes in the temperature, wind and shadows won’t be as dramatic. And the moon won’t block out enough light for you to witness the sun’s corona.

What if I can’t get to the path of totality?

Viewers in locations away from the eclipse path will see the moon partially blot out the sun, though how perceptible the effects are depends on the site’s distance from the centerline. (The closer you are, the more remarkable it will be.) Still, it won’t be quite like experiencing the eclipse during totality.

Remember that you should always wear protective eye equipment while watching a partial eclipse.

If you can’t make it to the path of totality but still want to experience it, many organizations are providing live video streams of the eclipse, including NASA and Time and Date . The Exploratorium, a museum in San Francisco, will also offer a sonification of the eclipse and a broadcast in Spanish.

When is the next total solar eclipse?

If you’re willing to travel, the next total solar eclipse is on Aug. 12, 2026. People in parts of Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and Spain will experience the event.

But if you want to see an eclipse in the United States, you’ll have to wait a long time. While a total eclipse will graze parts of Alaska in 2033, the next one to reach the lower 48 states is on Aug. 22, 2044. That event crosses parts of Canada and ends in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

For those willing to wait until 2045, the eclipse of Aug. 12 that year will start in California and travel east, exiting the country in Florida.

What have we learned from solar eclipses?

In the 1800s, a French astronomer discovered the element helium by studying the spectrum of sunlight emitted during an eclipse. These events also allowed the first scientific observations of coronal mass ejections — violent expulsions of plasma from the sun’s corona — which can cause power outages and communication disruptions on Earth. Scientists also confirmed Einstein’s theory of general relativity, which says that massive objects bend the fabric of space-time, during a solar eclipse in 1919.

And there is more to discover. This April, NASA plans to fly instruments on planes to capture images of the solar corona, and launch rockets to study how the drop in sunlight during an eclipse affects Earth’s atmosphere. A radio telescope in California will try to use the moon as a shield to measure emissions from individual sunspots .

The public is joining the fun, too. During the eclipse, a team of ham radio operators will beam signals across the country to study how solar disturbances can affect communications. Some people along the path of totality will record sounds from wildlife . Others will use their phones to snap pictures of the eclipse to help sketch out the shape of the solar disk .

An earlier version of this article referred imprecisely to eclipse on other worlds. Some appear larger than the sun in sky, they are not all partial eclipses.

Judge in hush money case hits Trump with partial gag order

The judge presiding over the New York criminal case against Donald Trump slapped the former president with a partial gag order Tuesday.

State Judge Juan Merchan's ruling orders Trump to "refrain" from "making or directing others to make public statements about known or reasonably foreseeable witnesses concerning their potential participation" in the falsifying business records case , as well as about individual prosecutors, court staff members, jurors and potential jurors.

The order does not apply to the judge or Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

The judge said the move was necessary now because "the Defendant’s prior extrajudicial statements establishes a sufficient risk to the administration of justice" and "there exists no less restrictive means to prevent such risk."

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung called the order "unconstitutional" and argued that it prevents Trump from "engaging in core political speech, which is entitled to the highest level of protection under the First Amendment."

Trump's attorneys had argued in court filings that because he is the presumptive Republican nominee for president he "must have unfettered access to the voting public to respond to attacks from political opponents."

Merchan said that he was "unpersuaded" by those arguments and that Trump's public commentary on the case has gone "far beyond defending himself against attacks."

The judge noted Trump’s past statements in this case and others included “threatening, inflammatory” and “denigrating” language and said similar attacks would “undoubtedly risk impeding the orderly administration of the Court.”

Merchan also suggested he had firsthand knowledge about being a subject of Trump's comments, and he cited "the nature and impact of the statements made against this Court and a family member," in addition to others.

The ruling was handed down hours after Trump blasted the judge, the judge's daughter, Bragg and former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, a key witness in the case, on his social media platform, Truth Social. The post referred to Cohen as a "liar and felon," and it also referred to a former prosecutor in the case, Mark Pomerantz, as a "dirtbag lawyer."

Cohen said in a statement he was grateful for the judge's action.

"I want to thank Judge Merchan for imposing the gag order as I have been under relentless assault from Donald’s MAGA supporters," he said. "Nevertheless, knowing Donald as well as I do, he will seek to defy the gag order by employing others within his circle to do his bidding; regardless of consequence."

Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to criminal charges that included making hush money deals for women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump.

The DA's case is centered on payments Trump made to reimburse  Cohen  for the $130,000 he paid one of the women, adult film star Stormy Daniels , to stay quiet about her alleged 2006 sexual encounter with Trump.

Trump has denied that he slept with Daniels, but he has acknowledged repaying Cohen. He has pleaded not guilty to charges that he “repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records.”

The case is set to go to trial April 15.

Merchan said that "given that the eve of trial is upon us, it is without question that the imminency of the risk of harm is now paramount."

Tuesday's ruling is the third partial gag order Trump has been hit with in the past year. In the civil fraud trial that concluded in January, New York state Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump and his attorneys not to talk about his law clerk or other court staffers after the former president's insistence that the clerk was biased led to a "deluge" of threats against her.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over Trump's federal election interference case in Washington, D.C., issued a ruling in October that bar s him from trashing witnesses and individual prosecutors and court staff members.

Chutkan said Trump could continue to “criticize the current administration and assert his belief that this prosecution is politically motivated.” But, she added, his First Amendment freedoms “do not allow him to launch a pre-trial smear campaign against participating government staff, their families and foreseeable witnesses.”

An appeals court later narrowed the order , allowing Trump some leeway to speak out if a high-profile witness made disparaging comments about him. That case has been paused while the Supreme Court weighs Trump's presidential immunity defense.

The Manhattan district attorney's office had asked Merchan for the partial gag order last month, arguing that Trump “has a long history of making public and inflammatory remarks about the participants in various judicial proceedings against him, including jurors, witnesses, lawyers, and court staff.”

“Those remarks, as well as the inevitable reactions they incite from defendant’s followers and allies, pose a significant and imminent threat to the orderly administration of this criminal proceeding and a substantial likelihood of causing material prejudice,” Bragg’s office said at the time.

Merchan handed down two other orders Tuesday.

In one, he rejected Trump's efforts to undo a new process for filing pretrial motions. Merchan had changed the procedure after Trump's attorneys tried raising a presidential immunity defense and asked the judge to delay the trial until after the Supreme Court ruled in the federal election interference case. The Trump request came just over two weeks before the hush money case was originally scheduled to go to trial.

In response, Merchan said both sides had to ask him for permission to file any other motions. Trump's attorneys argued that it would violate their client's right to a fair trial. Merchan disagreed, saying he has the "inherent authority" to do so.

In the third ruling, Merchan shot down Trump's motion asking that documents be unsealed and that public filings in the case be immediately visible on the court docket. The judge noted there's a protective order barring some information from being released publicly and said that “it is this Court’s understanding that everything that is normally maintained in a court file is currently contained in the public file.”

"To the extent Defendant believes that anything normally maintained that is not subject to the Protective Order or governing law, is not in the court file, he should identify the document to the Court and to the People. The Court will consider any objections and rule on the matter," Merchan added.

News organizations, including the NBC News Group, had asked the judge to more promptly file the motions to the public docket and to put emails between the parties on the docket, as well. The judge did not address the letter from the media organizations in Tuesday's order.
