For the first time, PONANT will make a port of call on the Danish island of Christiansoe , a territory measuring less than 0,5 km 2 (barely 0,3 square miles) in the very heart of the Baltic Sea. The rocky shorelines of this natural and preserved sanctuary have magnificent panoramas.

You will set a course for the charming fishing village of  Gudhjem . Located on the small Danish island of Bornholm, it is very popular among the Danes for its gentle way of life and its beautiful landscapes of rock formations.

He trained in contemporary dance and performance art where he worked with dancers renowned in their fields (Gonçalo Lobato, Ricardo Ambrozio, Inaki Azpillaga, Tomislav English, Máté Mészáros, Isael Cruz, etc.). With this new spectrum of mastery of movement, he moved back to Paris in 2021.

Professional dancer, choreographer, organiser of events and cultural actions around the body, composer, photographer, etc., it is as a self-taught and multidisciplinary creative that he never stops exploring new horizons and meeting the curious.

Pirates and fishermen succeeded one another here before the construction of its fortress, built between the 17th and 18th centuries, in the time of the Danish-Swedish wars. Visiting Christiansoe, you see the shaping of great history, the re-emergence of the rivalries and alliances that took place in the Baltic Sea. Today, this peaceful island offers you wild and preserved nature. A natural reserve since 1926, it is home in particular to a very large population of nesting and migrating birds that find food and tranquillity here.

Arrival 09/08/2024 midday Departure 09/08/2024 early evening

Lying in the south-west of the Baltic Sea, the medieval village of Gudhjem , on the island of Bornholm, is one of the most visited and most popular villages in Denmark. As you stroll along its picturesque streets, you will fall under the spell of its varied landscapes, its easy way of life, and the authenticity of this charming town with half-timbered houses topped with red roofs, in the Danish tradition. It is here, along these charming streets, that the first herring smokehouses were built in the mid-19th century, attracting all the region’s fishermen. Tucked away in a gorgeous natural setting composed of rocky cliffs, dense forests and beaches of white sand, Gudhjem will provide an unforgettable interlude where time will seem to stand still.

Suomenlinna Fortress

Suomenlinna Fortress

From the Market Square, board a local ferry to reach Suomenlinna Island . The island is a major monument of military architecture. The construction of the sea fortress on the islands just off Helsinki in the middle of the 18th century was the most extensive building project during Swedish rule. When it was complete, its military shipyard was one of the biggest dry docks in the world and centres of know-how at that time. At the end of Swedish rule, the fortress was being compared with the maritime fortifications of Gibraltar. The 250-year-old fortress, which has been preserved intact because of its military use, is today part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List .

Join your guide for a walking tour of the island.

From the fortress, head back to the mainland by ferry, where you will pass through the Market Square and enjoy free time before walking back to the ship.

Stockholm city tour & Vasa Museum

From the pier, board your coach for a 30-minute drive towards the City Hall .

Inaugurated in 1923 after 12 years of work, it is renowned for its architecture, murals, and mosaics, as well as for being the site of the annual Nobel Prize banquet. Experience the grandeur and spaciousness of the impressive Blue Hall and Golden Chamber and enjoy the beautiful view from the Garden.

Witness the historic elegance of the exterior of the Royal Palace , dating from the 18th century but built on the remains of the old castle “Three Crowns”, which dates as far back as the 12th century. Built on a hill in the Old Town, the Royal Palace has no less than 608 rooms.

Continue with your guide for a walk along the narrow streets of the Old Town and experience the medieval intimacy of what is today a living historical monument of international renown. Savour the bohemian atmosphere and the sense of age in houses dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries with Baroque doorways and coats of arms. You will pass by Stockholm Cathedral (the oldest church in Stockholm) and the Great Square in the centre of the Old Town, which is dominated by the old Stock Exchange, today housing the Nobel (Prize) Museum and the Swedish Academy.

Next, reboard your coach and continue the panoramic sightseeing en route to the Vasa Museum , for a guided visit. The museum was built around a 17th century warship, which sank in Stockholm’s inner harbour on its maiden voyage in 1628. After the visit, reboard your coach for the panoramic return drive to the pier and your ship.

  • This moderate tour involves some steps and approximately 2 km (1.24 mile) of walking on uneven terrain (cobblestone streets in the old town). We recommend you to wear good and comfortable shoes. Stockholm & Sigtuna

Stockholm & Sigtuna

From the pier, start with some panoramic sightseeing to the island of Djurgården, where the number one attraction in Stockholm is located, the Vasa Museum . You will enjoy a guided visit of the mueum, housing the warship Vasa, once the pride of Sweden’s mighty navy. On her maiden voyage in 1628 she capsized and sank in Stockholm’s inner harbour. In 1961, after 333 years at the bottom of the water she was salvaged and is today restored to much of her original magnificence.

You will continue your visit through the northern outskirts of the city and through the scenic countryside en route to Sigtuna , an idyllic little town, approximately 45 minutes drive north of Stockholm and beautifully situated between the Lake Mälaren and cultivated areas bearing countless traces of old cultural traditions.

Sigtuna was founded around 980 on the threshold of a new age as the Viking period became the medieval period, and Sweden united into one kingdom. Sigtuna became the first Christian town in Sweden, a centre of the new religion. Many stone churches were erected but only the ruins of three of them remain to be seen. You will discover this charming town with picturesque wooden houses, narrow alleys and the smallest Town Hall in Scandinavia, dating from 1744. During your visit, tour the major points of interest including one of the Church Ruins, the Town Hall, St Mary’s church and “Stora Gatan”, the oldest street in Sweden.

Finally, enjoy a 3 courses lunch served at a local resturant and have some free time before returning to your ship.

  • This moderate tour involves some steps and approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) of walking on uneven terrain (cobblestone streets in the old town). We recommend you wear good and comfortable shoes.

Polish culinary traditions in Gdansk

Discover one of the most popular specialties of Poland: pierogi . This tour will allow you to taste the local food and enjoy a guided tour of Gdansk.

Together with your guide, you will arrive at a local workshop where you can make and taste pierogi . Indeed, as far as cuisine is concerned, Poland is the most famous country for its pierogi, also called dumplings. You will have the opportunity to get your hands dirty by following the Polish recipe with local ingredients and your chef's instructions, and  prepare your own Polish dumplings. Your chefs know the recipes inside out, so you will not only prepare and taste these delicious dishes, but you will also learn about the true Polish traditions . After the workshop, you will taste your preparations accompanied by a glass of a typical Polish drink, namely kompot . Malbork Castle

Malbork Castle

Discover the beauty of Poland and visit the castle that has remained an object of European fascination since its mediaval origins.

Meet your guide, then board your bus for a one-hour ride to the town of Malbork. Follow your guide and get immersed in medieval Poland , the time of the Teutonic Knights and the largest medieval fortress in Europe.

Malbork Castle , also known as the Castle of the Teutonic Order of Malbork, is the most complete and elaborate example of a Gothic brick castle complex in the characteristic and unique style of the Teutonic Order. Moreover, in 1997 it was included in the list of UNSECO World Heritage Sites . A large part of the original structure remains in Malbork and testifies to the high standard and exceptional quality of craftsmanship practiced in the region throughout the 14th century. Construction along the Nogat River began in 1274, when the Teutonic Knights created this massive stone fortress that includes formidable defensive walls, towers, a labyrinth of chambers, keeps and wonderful architectural details. In 1309, the headquarters of the knights left Venice to settle here. In 1466, the castle and town became part of Royal Prussia, a province of Poland, and served as the royal residence of Polish kings for the next 300 years. Extensive conservation work on the castle was carried out in the 19th and early 20th centuries. After the severe damage it suffered during the final phase of World War II, the castle was renovated once again. Today, the castle serves as a museum, with large exhibition halls, which display collections of armour, ceramics, sculptures and spectacular Baltic amber .

At the end of this exceptional tour, you will return, by bus, to your ship in Gdansk.

  • This tour involves approximately 1km of walking with 150 steps to negotiate at the Castle. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.

Kashubian Region

Kashubian Region

The inhabitants of the Kashubian region say that God forgot about the people of Kashubian when the world was created. Having noticed this, God was so embarrassed that he gave this piece of land all that was left: golden sand, round stones, green forests, blue lakes and rolling hills. Who knows, maybe it really did happen.

You will meet your guide on the pier and board your bus for the hour-long drive to Kashubia.

This is a popular region throughout Poland, for many reasons. In addition to the region's interesting history and culture, visitors are attracted by "kaszëbsczé jezora et kaszëbsczi las", which means nature that combines forest and water in a special way . With an area of over 32,000 hectares, the Krajobrazowy Park (Kashubian Landscape Park) covers the highest and most diverse part of the Kashubian Lake District, often referred to as "Szwajcaria Kaszubska" ( Kashubian Switzerland ). For nature lovers, there are a multitude of hiking trails of different types and lengths. During your visit to Kashubia, you will enjoy a 9 km hike through the forest of this magnificent region.

Next, you will head to the top of a commanding hill (221.3 m above sea level) above Reboszewo has stood a replica of a wooden windmill - kozlak - since 2012. From the top floor, you can admire the panorama of the surrounding hills and lakes. You will also see the original mechanism transported from Sokólka in Podlasie.

After this visit, which will teach you more about Kashubian culture, you will enjoy a well-deserved coffee break , while taking in the surroundings.

Finally, you will catch your bus back to your ship in Gdansk.

The best of Bornholm

The best of Bornholm

From Gudhjem, you will board your coach and begin your scenic tour through the picturesque farmlands of the small Baltic island of Bornholm belonging to Denmark. On the way, you will enjoy the coastal landscape, heading to the Baltic Sea Glass workshop , located a few kilometers from Gudhjem. Baltic Sea Glass is Denmark's largest glass blowing studio, for which the island is famous. The studio and gallery are set in a converted chicken coop. Today, Baltic Sea Glass welcomes between 100,000 and 120,000 visitors every year. Although they mainly design and produce functional tabletop glassware, the workshop also creates unique pieces for galleries and museum exhibitions.

At the end of the tour, you will continue to Almindingen, on the other side of  the island. In one of Denmark's largest forest areas, you will discover Oesterlars round church, one of the four round churches located on Bornholm (representing half of all round churches in Denmark). A visit inside the church is planned, provided that no religious services are scheduled.

The next stop is at Hammershus , an ancient fortress built on the northern tip of Bornholm. These are the largest castle ruins in Northern Europe. The oldest part was built in the early 12th century to consolidate the power held by the Archbishop of Lund (then part of Denmark) over the island and obtained through an agreement with the Danish king, Svend Grathe. For the next 500 years Hammershus was home to various rulers of the island. Hammershus has been rebuilt and expanded several times. In 1743, Hammershus was finally abandoned as a fortress.

You visit will end with a stop in the charming village of Allinge where you will visit one of the smokehouses for that the island is also renowned. During this visit, you can taste smoked herring and an icecold beer before making the short return trip to the village of Gudhjem to board your ship.

  • Approx 2 km - gravel, concrete, mostly flat - but there are stairs at Hammershus. The stairs to go on the roof of the church are narrow and dark. Guests are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes. Please note, there is no guarantee that the glassblowers will be working at the time of the visit.

Nature and villages of Bornholm

Nature and villages of Bornholm

From the pier, board your bus for a 30-minute drive and start your adventure around the island and through the lush Danish countryside. Drive along the northern coast of this little island situated far from the rest of Denmark in the Baltic Sea. Enjoy the unspoiled landscape and cliffs along the coast and drive through the little village of Allinge before reaching your first stop, the ruins of Hammershus.

Hammershus is the largest ruined castle in Northern Europe. The oldest part of the ruin dates back to the early 12th century and was erected to consolidate control of the island by Archbishop of Lund in the south of Sweden, which also used to be a part of Denmark. Enjoy the magnificent view of the ruin from the viewing point and explore the visitor center where you can learn more about the ruin and the kings who ruled the island.

Next, enjoy the journey to the south of Bornholm, arriving at its biggest town Rønne . Rønne is the largest town on the Danish island of Bornholm. Owing to its natural harbour and its strategic position in the Baltic Sea, Rønne has an interesting history, falling under both German and Swedish influence during its development as a herring fishing port. You will take a stroll along the cobbled streets and enjoy the coloured timbered and half-timbered houses. Rønne is now one of the most visited and popular villages in Denmark. Enjoy time exploring the capital on your own.

Along the northern coast, you will travel into the countryside passing the famous round church of Østerlars , where a uick photo stop will be made (outside visit), which dates back to 1150. It was used both as a place of worship and as protection against enemies from the sea.

Taking the coastal road, you will then travel back to Gudhjem, where you will have the opportunity to walk from the top of the village down the winding narrow streets with your guide before your journey ends where it began.

  • This tour involves approximately 400 meters (0.3 mile) of walking on flat terrain. Please note the order of the visits may be reversed.

In just over an hour, you will arrive in Fiskars - a flourishing ironworks village with a colourful history. Fiskars is best known for jewellery, ceramics, woodcrafts, and distilleries. You can take a restroom stop at the information centre before you continue to KWUM. In the Korean language, the word KWUM means “dream”, but in Fiskars it means The Karin Widnäs’ museum. The idea of creating a ceramics museum had a long gestation period, but once the project got under way, the over 300- square meter building was completed in just a few years. The architecture combines timber and ceramics elements, and indeed can be seen as a blueprint of just how to do so. The architect Tuomo Siitonen designed Studio Widnäs, the artist’s home, workshop, and gallery.

After leaving KWUM, take a walk with your guide through Fiskars village and hear about the history of the village and the items that are still being made there, and you can even pop into some of the shops. On the other side of the village, you will find a glass studio where the host will entertain you with a presentation of glass blowing.

Enjoy a traditional village lunch with local beverages at a cozy restaurant, and then take time to browse some of the artisan’s shops before returning to Helsinki. When arriving at Helsinki, a photo stop will be made at the Senate Square.

Le Dumont-d’Urville will then sail to the Swedish island of Gotland and call at  Visby , a site that was important for the Hanseatic League in the Baltic Sea around the 13th century.  UNESCO Heritage Site , this once opulent city still has remarkably well-preserved ramparts, public buildings, merchant houses and warehouses.

You will return to Sweden in  Karlskrona.  This city, whose history is intrinsically linked to the Swedish Navy, boasts exceptional UNESCO-listed architecture that is characteristic of late-17th-century European naval cities.

Your ship will then call at  Gdansk,  famous for its amber stone and its shipyards. The former Hanseatic city will reveal some of its architectural treasures, in Gothic and Baroque styles, restored or rebuilt.

You will set a course for the charming fishing village of  Gudhjem . Located on the small Danish island of Bornholm, it is very popular among the Danes for its gentle way of life and its beautiful landscapes of rock formations.

Then proceed to Temppeliaukio Church . Built from the natural bedrock, it is one of Helsinki's most popular tourist attractions. The interior walls are created naturally by the rock, hence its nickname the Rock Church. The church was opened in 1969. Due to its excellent acoustics, the church is a popular venue for concerts.

After the visit, drive to Senate Square ; it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful urban squares in the world. The square is dominated by four buildings designed by Carl Ludvig Engel between 1822 and 1852: Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki and the National Library of Finland.

Next, walk down from Senate Square to the very lively Market Place . Here, discover the real heart of Helsinki and enjoy free time walking around and tasting local foods. Re-board the coach for the return drive to the pier and ship.

  • This tour involves approximately 1.5 miles (2 km) of walking on uneven ground and sand paths. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes. There are no inside visits included. The use of the local ferry is nonexclusive.

Foraging in a Finnish forest

iStock-1338402517.jpg

This tour takes you on a journey through Mother Nature's kitchen , right in the heart of the Finnish forest.

Board your coach for a 45 minute drive through the Finnish landscapes towards Nuuksio National Park .

Here, you will meet your local Finnish forest guide, who has studied all the edible herbs, berries and mushrooms. He will guide you through the national park and will explain all the secrets of the forest, which is a kind of open-air market garden and kitchen. Indeed, Finland's ever-changing and organic forests provide families with a wide variety of ingredients that change with each season.

During your tour in the middle of the forest the guide will tell you about the Finnish culture, and the importance of the open spaces for the locals.

Every story is unique when it starts in nature. The story of the day will be directed by the season and the wild foods you can find in the heart of it. From spring to autumn, you will be on the hunt for wild herbs like ground elder and nettle, wild berries like blueberries, raspberries and lingonberries, and some of nature's finest fungi (depending on the season), such as the golden chanterelle and the picturesque porcini.

Accompanied by your guide, you will stop for a delicious  Finnish-style light lunch . This perfect moment will allow you to enjoy the serene beauty of the Finnish wilderness in your own way.

After this journey in the forest, you will reboard your coach and drive back to the ship.

  • This tour includes approximately 3km of walking in the forest. A raincoat in case of rain is included in the tour. We recommend you wear comfortable shoes and outdoor clothing in accordance with the weather. Guests must be well fit for a nature walk. You will meet your guide and board your coach for a panoramic 30-minutes tour of the UNESCO World Heritage listed part of the city, which is full of historical splendours reflecting its maritime heritage before heading to Brändaholm, and where you will be immersed in a typical Swedich neighbourhood.

Brändaholm is considered to be Sweden's most picturesque and beautiful allotment gardens. It is a picture-postcard example of  Sweden's idylic way of life. It is located on a small promontory of the Dragsö island, and is characterized by its 1920s-style houses and small paths. An ideal destination for simply taking a stroll. There are 45 small houses with gardens, adorned with the Sewedish flag floating in the wind. To own a cottage you need to be in an inhabitant of Karlskrona. The local owners are very proud of their houses, and, of course, their gardens. The houses have historically passed from owner to owner through inheritance of other direct and personal means and they are rarely traded in the open market. Stops will be made at a couple of the gardens where you will be able to have a look inside.

Then, head to a typical Swedish “ fika ” where you will enjoy a coffee with Swedish cake in the company of your local guide, who will be happy to ask all your questions about Karlskrona.

After this nice break, you will head to nearby Björkholmen , the old quarter of Karlskrona, with narrow streets and old wooden houses, where you will be immersed in a typical Swedish neighborhood from the past. A sharp contrast from the buildings of the city centre, you will enjoy a unique visit of one of the cottages before reboarding your coach and drive back to your ship.

You will proceed past the Royal Dramatic Theatre along Strandvägen to the island of Djurgården. You will then reach Gamla Stan, the enchanting medieval Old Town passing the Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet) over-looking Stockholm's inner harbour. Gamla Stan is one of the best preserved medieval city centres in the world. You will appreciate some free time in Gamla Stan to have lunch on your own and to walk through the small winding streets lined with stores full of handicrafts, antiques, art galleries and cafés.

You will then be transferred to the pier to embark on your ship.

A Baltic Sea cruise taking in Russia, the Baltic states and Scandinavia provides an opportunity to go back in time to a Europe where royal and imperial families reigned over regions brimming with culture. This historical heritage can still be seen in all the area's major cities.

Must-Sees - Baltic Sea

The Essentials - Baltic Sea

Before setting off on a Baltic Sea cruise , discover some of the cultural traits of this region, with its blend of both Nordic and Slavic influences. Historic city centres and modern architecture, peaceful countryside and an ultra-connected society: tradition and modernity standing side-by-side.

Walk around Stockholm's old town - Sweden

Walk around Stockholm's old town - Sweden

Located on Gamla Stan island by the water, Stockholm's old town is made up of typical narrow paved alleyways and buildings. This is the place people come to gauge the pulse of a stunning city as well as to visit its oldest cathedral and, of course, the royal palace . Although you can't go into all the 608 rooms this impressive building contains, you will still be charmed by the royal apartments in Baroque and Rococo style. Nearby, City Hall watches over the Swedish capital like a lighthouse. Each year, it hosts the banquet put on for the Nobel Prize ceremony.

Take in Tallinn's medieval ambiance - Estonia

Take in Tallinn's medieval ambiance - Estonia

The Estonian capital is a lovely size and has managed to preserve its remarkable medieval centre . The upper town is also nice to visit with its watchtowers, squares and paved alleyways with old arches and its superb Russian Orthodox church dating from 1900. To continue enjoying your immersion in Tallinn 's past, there's nothing better than an Estonian folk performance.

Marvel at Saint Petersburg, the Venice of the North - Russia

Marvel at Saint Petersburg, "the Venice of the North" - Russia

Saint Petersburg is nicknamed the " Venice of the North " thanks to its many canals. One of the best ways to see the city's numerous palaces and castles (Stroganov, Anitchkov, etc.) that showcase its prosperity in past centuries is to go for a panoramic boat ride. Once back on land, the magic continues with visits to various unmissable landmarks like the splendid Yusupov Palace , St Isaac's Cathedral and the iconic Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood .

Wander around the galleries at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg - Russia

Wander around the galleries at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg - Russia

The architecture of the Hermitage building — one of the biggest museums in the world — is itself exceptional. From the outside, the green, white and gold facade, the columns and the huge pediments set the tone. Enter the buildings (Hermitage Theatre, Small Hermitage, Large Hermitage, New Hermitage, Winter Palace and General Staff Building) to find yourself in the lap of luxury, surrounded by magnificent decor. With huge staircases, colonnades, floors decked out in marble or sumptuous parquet, walls decorated with mouldings, gilding, mosaics, bas-reliefs, other paintings and more, almost 1,000 rooms are open to the public covering 66,000 square metres and showcasing over 60,000 works selected from the museum's 3-million-strong collection.

Treat yourself to a tour through Finland's rural past

Treat yourself to a tour through Finland's rural past

Although the Finnish capital offers plenty of charms, you can also take a more unusual trip to Seurasaari Island a few kilometres from the city centre. The ethnologist Axel Olai Heikel chose this green area as the site for no fewer than 85 buildings (houses, farms, windmill, cafe and shop). Gathered from all over the country, put back up on the island and authentically decorated, these buildings provide an insight into everyday Finnish life between the 12th century and the start of the 20th century.

Découvrir Riga, entre terre et canaux - Lettonie

Explore Riga on land and on the canals - Latvia

Take a guided boat tour on the Daugava River snaking through Riga to get an initial impression of the city, its tower-filled historic centre, its castle, its landmarks and its parks. If you want more from your visit to the Latvian capital, there's nothing better than walking around the city centre next. Riga Cathedral is worth a detour with its impressive 6,700-pipe organ. In Town Hall Square, St Peter's Church with its bell tower and the House of the Blackheads are worth a visit.

Wander round Copenhagen - Denmark

Wander round Copenhagen - Denmark

The best-known thing about Copenhagen tends to be its iconic little mermaid statue. Yet, the Danish capital often surprises visitors. There are lovely walks to be had through the pedestrian city-centre streets with their designer boutiques, art galleries, cafes and tea rooms. The solemn royal Amalienborg Palace , the jubilant Tivoli Gardens and the quiet Nyhavn waterfront confirm that Copenhagen is a multi-faceted and lively city that makes a great stopover destination.

Dos. In the Baltic countries, whether it's Estonia, Lithuania or Latvia, people represent numbers using only the fingers and not the thumb. "One" is indicated with the index finger, "two" with the middle finger, etc. Don'ts. In Russia and the Baltic countries, shaking hands with one person on one side of a porch and the other person on the other side is said to bring bad luck, as does the act of remaining standing in a doorway. Both parties must be on the same side of the entrance when greeting each other. In Finland, people never interrupt each other: each person speaks in turn.

Unique features

Along the Baltic coast, whether in Russia, Finland or the Baltic countries, ice bathing is a strongly anchored tradition. Hailed for its beneficial effects on blood circulation and in strengthening the immune system, it's an activity that has to be prepared for properly. In Russia, those who take part in the practice are nicknamed morji (walruses).

Essential phrases

ponant cruises baltic

Inhabitants of the Nordic countries, from Canada to Finland, are particularly fond of a small berry that grows in peat bogs close to marshes, especially in Lapland: the cloudberry , or lakka . These small yellow fruits picked in summer and rich in vitamin C are preserved for winter and used to make delicious tarts, jams, cordials and liqueurs.

Myths & legends

Amber , treasure of the Baltic Sea, has inspired many legends. According to traditional stories and tales, these translucent pearls of pine resin symbolise the tears of Jūratė, goddess of the mermaids and fiancée of Potrimpo, god of the sea, and the shards of her underwater amber palace. The goddess incurred the wrath of the gods by falling for the charms of the brave fisherman Kastytis, and to punish her, Perkūnas, the god of thunder and the sky, killed her lover and struck down her palace and Potrimpo chained her to the ruins forever.

In the spotlight

Estonia is one of the most digitally cutting edge countries in the world and also the birthplace of Skype. It even sometimes referred to as E-stonia , which is the nickname that's been given to this little nation that has become a paradise for startups . Having e-resident status in Estonia allows digital entrepreneurs from anywhere in the world to domicile their companies in the country and enjoy the benefits of both an advantageous tax system and access to the European market, all managed remotely. With the exception of marriages, divorces and property purchases, all administrative processes in the country are carried out online and more than 90 percent of the population have electronic ID cards.

Books. In The Man Who Spoke Snakish (Grove Press Atlantic, 2015), winner of the French prix de l'imaginaire 2014 in the foreign novel category, the Estonian author Andrus Kivirähk evokes the world of the ancestors and casts a discerning eye over the present by immersing the reader in a phantasmagorical universe populated with mythical creatures and featuring dialogues between humans and animals.

Music. The kantele , a kind of traditional five-stringed zither and a national symbol in Finland, though it's also found in Russia and the Baltic countries too, was once used to accompany both the songs of bards and poets and traditional folk dancing. The delicate sounds of this sacred instrument served to intensify the romanticism of the national narrative in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. The repertoire associated with it has broadened and expanded since its introduction into the school and conservatory curriculums in the 1970s and 80s.

Film. Actor, director and producer Aki Kaurismäki is one of the iconic figures of European arthouse cinema. Influenced by the French New Wave and cinema burlesque, this Finnish artist uses depictions of marginalised or quirky and off-the-wall characters in his films to paint a poetic and melancholic picture of fragile societies. He has shot several films in France, including La Vie de Bohème (1992) and Le Havre (2011). The Man Without a Past (2002) and The Other Side of Hope (2017) were respectively awarded a Grand Prix at Cannes and a Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

Guest Speaker

  • In partnership with Les Éditions Tallandier and with featured guest Emmanuel de Waresquiel, French historian and author.

PONANT invites you to discover the historical cities along the Baltic Sea. You will embark on Le Dumont-d’Urville for a 9-day cruise about the cultural wonders of the Hanseatic League .

Departing from  Copenhagen , you will head for the charming fishing village of Gudhjem . Located on the small Danish island of Bornholm, it is very popular among the Danes for its gentle way of life and its beautiful landscapes of rock formations.

Your ship will then call at  Gdansk,  famous for its amber stone and its shipyards. The former Hanseatic city will reveal some of its architectural treasures, in Gothic and Baroque styles, restored or rebuilt.

Further north, Klaipeda , formerly known as Memel, the main port town in Lithuania, is separated only by a narrow channel from the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO Heritage.

During your cruise, Helsinki , located on a peninsula surrounded by almost 300 islands, the verdant capital of Finland will charm you with its Art Nouveau architecture.

Then You will visit Tallinn, emblematic city of the Hanseatic League, the large trading network that dominated the Baltic Sea for several centuries. Listed as UNESCO Heritage Site, this once opulent city still have remarkably well-preserved public buildings, merchant houses and warehouses.

Finally, you will then chart a course for Stockholm . Built on water, the Swedish capital embraces nature, which is omnipresent there. Its blend of medieval architecture, colourful houses and trendy neighbourhoods makes it a particularly enjoyable city to visit.

Emmanuel de Waresquiel

Emmanuel de Waresquiel, born 1957, a graduate of the École Normale Supérieure (ENS - Paris) and currently professor at the highly selective École Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE - Paris), is a historian, biographer and essayist. He has published around 20 books, several of which have won prizes (France Television, Ambassadors, Académie Française, Deux Magots, Jean d’Ormesson, etc.) and around a hundred scientific articles. He works and writes about periods ranging from the end of the Ancien Régime to the constitutional monarchies of the 19 th century: Ancien Régime, the Revolution, Empire and Restorations. He approaches his subjects from different angles, either as biography by choosing his characters depending on what they have to say about the periods they lived through (Talleyrand, Fouché, Marie-Antoinette and soon Jeanne du Barry), or as an essay ( Sept Jours , Cent Jours , Penser la Restauration ).

He attaches great importance to the writing of history and the relationships of a period and memories that his subjects bring to the era. He is also author of several literary essays on writers and death ( Fins de partie ), on Stendhal ( J’ai tant vu le soleil ), chronicles on past-present relationships ( Le temps de s’en apercevoir , etc.) and memories ( Voyage autour de mon enfance ).

Extensive conservation work on the castle was carried out in the 19th and early 20th centuries. You will hear the story of how a modern young family can change their lives, return to their roots and live in harmony with nature . This was a decision made by Emas, a young lecturer at the International University and father of a large family. At that time, he had no idea what village life would involve.  But today, you can find Emas milking his goats and feeding chickens , which happily roam free in the yard.  Very often, Emas and his children can see roe deer and hares in the forest.

Emas not only wants to create an enjoyable life for his family, but also to share his new life experiences and dreams with his visitors, young and old. Now Emas's house is not just a home for his family, it is also a summer camp for teenagers who want to be closer to nature . Relax and chat with Emas and his family over a cup of hot beverage and some light Lithuanian snacks .

After seeing how a young family has created its life in the village, you will reboard the bus for a panoramic drive back to Klaipeda and head back to your ship.
