Check-in now for your Qantas Airways flight

What are the requirements for using online check-in?

  • Check in 1-24 hours before your domestic flight is scheduled to depart. Check in 2-24 hours before your international flight is scheduled to depart.
  • You must be booked on a flight eligible for online check-in. Check Qanta's eligibility table for more details.
  • You are not a special needs passenger (i.e. unaccompanied minor).

Make sure you leave enough time at the airport to get through security, check your bags, etc.

Can I use online check-in if I have bags to check?

Yes, you will be able to print your boarding pass at home but will have to drop your bags at a designated Qantas Bag Drop at the airport before the cut-off time.

Can I change/select my seat with online check-in?

Yes, when you use online check-in you can change/select a seat.

How much time should I allot at the airport?

  • If you are traveling within Australia, the cut-off is 30-60 minutes before departure time, depending on your flight number .
  • If you are traveling internationally and departing from an Australian international airport, the check-in cut-off time is 30-120 minutes before departure time, depending on your flight number .

When you need to arrive at the airport for a domestic or international flight

By Kristine Tarbert | 2 months ago

More Aussies are travelling than ever, with 75 per cent of us planning to take a holiday in the coming months.

While travelling is, of course, a lot of fun, airports can be one of the most stressful things about planning a trip.

Expedia's Lisa Perkovic previously told 9Travel , "Arriving at the airport with plenty of time to spare is one way to avoid unnecessary stress at the airport."

So just how early should you get there?

qantas domestic travel check in times

When should I arrive at the airport for a domestic flight?

Choosing an arrival time for a domestic flight depends on a number of variables, explains Perkovic.

"When it comes to how early you should arrive at the airport, it's often dependent on the specific airport you're flying out of, the airline and of course your destination and whether you have luggage to check-in," she said

READ MORE: These airports are the world's worst for delays and cancellations

As a general rule, if you are flying domestic in Australia, you should plan to arrive at least one to two hours before departure, to allow enough time to pass through airport security and then arrive at your gate in time for boarding.

If you already checked in online, you will still need a minimum of 30 minutes.

But don't forget to allow extra time for anything out of the ordinary, such as needing to check oversized luggage, such as a pram or surfboard.

According to Qantas, it is probably safe to shave only about 30 minutes off your arrival time if you check-in online. But it warned online check-in closes 30 minutes before domestic departures.

Check-in counters for domestic flights usually close 30 minutes prior to a flight's scheduled departure. But don't forget, it is not uncommon to experience long delays at some check-in counters, which can add to your stress levels if you arrive late.

Qantas says while check-in for its domestic flights closes 30 minutes before departure, it recommends you check-in no later than 45 minutes prior to your flight.

Also, some domestic flights depart from an international terminal. If this is the case, you will need to follow international airport arrival recommendations, according to Skyscanner.

When should I arrive at the airport for an international flight?

As you might expect, if you are travelling internationally, you need to allow more time.

You should generally aim to arrive at the airport at least two to three hours before your flight. This will give you enough time to check-in, drop off your checked baggage, go through passenger security screening, and arrive at the correct gate, all in before final boarding.

Even if you checked in early online, you will typically need a minimum of two hours, especially if you are checking in baggage. And again, don't forget to allow extra time if you need to check-in oversized luggage.

Check-in for international flights often closes much earlier than for domestic flights.

Qantas says check-in for its international flights closes 90 minutes before departure but recommends you check-in no later than two hours prior to your flight.

Qantas offers online check-in on all its flights, which opens 24 hours before departure time.

But while it can shave about 30 minutes off your arrival time at the airport, be warned it still closes 90 minutes before international departures.

Don't forget also there may be long delays at some check-in counters, adding to your stress if you arrive late, and there can be an extra long walk to your departure gate if you are at an international airport.

Qantas says Munich's international airport requires a shuttle to take you between some gates, while the distance between some terminals at Philadelphia's international airport clocks is 1.7 kilometres.

"Don't assume you'll be able to get from A to B (or check-in to gate) in 10 minutes, and take this into account when considering your arrival time," Qantas says in its travel tips.

"It's always best to do your research. During busy travel periods like the school holidays over summer, be sure to allow extra time," Perkovic said.

Around 110,000 people were expected to travel through Sydney airport terminals today.

Is there such a thing as arriving at the airport too early?

Check-in for flights usually opens at a set time, around two hours before departure on a domestic flight and three hours before departure when flying internationally.

That said, airlines sometimes allow earlier arrivals to join the check-in queue at other counters, so it does pay to get there early.

Will a flight leave without me?

Yes! If you're running late to the airport and miss check-in before the counter closes, or you are too busy perusing the duty free aisles to make it on board before they shut the doors, you will probably wind up missing your flight.

Depending on the airline's policy, if you miss your flight, you might be allowed to rebook another flight, either for free, or be charged a fee. However, if you had a ticket that didn't allow changes or refunds, you may end up losing the value of your entire ticket.

How to save time at the airport

Perkovic said the long break many Australians had from travelling as a result of the pandemic meant many travellers had simply forgotten what is involved.

She said Aussies should look at regaining their 'travel fitness' to prepare themselves for what's ahead and ensure a smooth trip.

She offered her three top tips for getting travel ready.

Stay updated: In the lead-up to your travel, keep an eye out for notifications that your flight has been changed or cancelled and note whether that impacts any connections or reservations. A handy way to stay connected is to download your travel provider's app and enable push notifications so you never miss an important update.

Be prepared: It's important to check what documentation is required for your transit and final destinations, as well as your airline and accommodation. Some countries require specific documentation, such as a visa, to enter. For instance, Indonesia introduced a new visa after the pandemic which has caught some travellers unawares. Also, make sure you have all your documents handy when you arrive at the airport, to save you time as you check in.

  • Check your luggage: Many Aussies are out of practice when it comes to packing for a big international trip, so be sure to check your baggage allowances. This includes checking the weight, and in some cases, the dimensions, of any checked baggage and carry-on luggage. You must also ensure you are not carrying any items in your baggage that is not permitted. By ensuring you have packed your luggage in accordance with your airline's policies will save you time at the airport, particularly as you're heading through security.

"Unfortunately, travel disruptions and delays are sometimes an inevitable part of travelling, but with a bit of preparation they don't need to ruin your trip," Perkovic said.

Qantas Airways check-in

How can i check in for a qantas airways flight.

Qantas Airways offers a range of check-in options designed to best suit the passengers’ needs, from online check-in to dedicated check-in counters for Frequent Flyer members and First and Business passengers.

From the following options, you can choose the most convenient one for you to check in for your next Qantas Airways flight:

  • Online Check-in.
  • Mobile Check-in.
  • Kiosk Check-in.
  • Auto Check-in .
  • Ticket Counter Check-in.

What are the minimum check-in times when traveling with Qantas Airways?

To achieve on-time performance, Qantas Airways recommends you check in in advance of the minimum check-in time for your flight. Depending on your itinerary, you should check in between 15 and 60 minutes in advance of the minimum check-in time for your flight. Minimum check-in time for your flight depends on your itinerary, terminal and operating carrier as follows.

  • 30 minutes before departure – flights QF 400 and above, and QF5000-QF5999 (Qantas codeshare flights operated by Jetstar).
  • 45 minutes before departure – domestic flights connecting to international flights.
  • 60 minutes before departure – flights QF001-QF399 (domestic flights departing from an Australian international terminal) and group check-in.
  • 60 minutes before departure – passengers traveling in First or Business class on flights QF001-QF399 (international Qantas flights at all Australian international airports) and international Qantas codeshare flights operated by Jetstar at all Australian international airports .
  • 90 minutes before departure – passengers traveling in Premium Economy or Economy class on flights QF001-QF399 (international Qantas flights at all Australian international airports).

If you do not comply with the minimum check-in time for your flight, you will not be able to travel on that flight. Depending on your fare conditions, failure to check-in on time may also result in the loss of the fare (you will need to make a new booking and pay for a new ticket if you wish to travel), or the payment of any difference between the original fare and the fare for your new booking and a change fee.

Online Check-in

Availability

Online  Check-in  is  available  for  domestic and international flights starting  24 hours before the scheduled departure ,  and up to 30 minutes before domestic flights and 90 minutes before international flights .

You are eligible for Online Check-in if your first flight is operated by Qantas Airways or QantasLink. You may use Online Check-in when you have a connecting flight operated by:

  • Qantas Airways (domestic and international) and QantasLink (same-day connection or return flight).
  • Jetstar international.
  • Oneworld partners.
  • Codeshare partners and other designated international partners.

Unaccompanied Minors and groups of more than 9 passengers cannot use Online Check-in.

Before you can check in online you need to retrieve your booking using your booking reference or your Frequent Flyer number, and your last name. The Online Check-in button will appear if you are eligible to check in for your flight. During Online Check-in, you can:

  • Select the passengers to check in (not all passengers need to check in at the same time).
  • Check in for your return flight on the same day.
  • Enter Advance Passenger Information, when your itinerary includes a country that requires it.
  • View or change seats.
  • Declare if you are carrying any dangerous goods.
  • Print your boarding pass on A4 paper only.

A confirmation page instead of a boarding pass is issued when additional checks (e.g. exit row seat requirements) are required before you travel. You must present your printed confirmation page and your travel documents to a Customer Service Agent at the Online Check-in counter. Here, you will also get assistance in case you lost or misplaced your boarding pass.

After you’ve checked in online for an international flight, at the airport, you must present your printed boarding pass along with your travel documents to a Qantas Customer Service Agent.

If you are traveling without checked baggage, you can proceed straight to security and then to the boarding gate. If you are traveling with checked baggage , you need to go to :

  • Bag drop (if you have Q Bag Tag or print your bag tags at a kiosk) or a dedicated Bag Drop counter at least 30 minutes before your domestic flight .
  • Dedicated Online Check-in counter (where available) or a check-in desk at least 90 minutes before your international flight .

Mobile Check-in

Mobile Check-in is a simplified check-in process available from Qantas apps or the Qantas mobile site.

You can check in from your web-enabled mobile device starting 24 hours and up to 30 minutes before your flight .

Mobile Check-in is available when traveling with an infant or for bookings with up to a maximum of nine passengers. However, you may check in only one passenger at a time . Group bookings of ten or more passengers, Unaccompanied Minors and passengers who require special assistance are not eligible for Mobile Check-in .

At the end of Mobile Check-in, you must enter your mobile number to receive an SMS with your 2D Boarding Pass (each passenger can receive the boarding pass on his/her own mobile device). Your boarding pass also includes the passenger name, flight details and seat number. You need to scan your mobile boarding passes at the gate to receive a boarding receipt to present to Cabin Crew onboard the aircraft. If you are traveling with checked baggage, you also need to scan your boarding passes at the Bag Drop. If you did not receive the SMS, you will need to print your boarding pass at the kiosk or see a check-in agent at the airport.

Kiosk Check-in

For most domestic flights and international flights from Brisbane, Sydney, and Perth , you have the option to check in at a kiosk, whether you are traveling with or without baggage . To start Kiosk Check-in, you can choose one of the following options :

  • Enter name and flight details or your booking reference
  • Insert your card (Frequent Flyer, Qantas Club or credit card used to make the booking).
  • Scan the barcode on your itinerary.

At the Check-in Kiosk, you will get your printed boarding pass and bag tags (where available), but you can also:

  • Check in for the return flight that same day, if your return flight is within 12 hours of departure and you only have carry-on baggage.
  • Change to an earlier flight (subject to the fare conditions of the ticket you have purchased).
  • View your flight booking details.
  • Print bag tags.
  • Input your Frequent Flyer details (including any Qantas affiliated frequent flyer program).
  • Upgrade using Frequent Flyer points (only available under certain conditions).
  • Check in another person, a companion who is on the same flight but not the same ticket.
  • Check in groups.

For international flights, all passengers, regardless of nationality and destination, must have their travel documents checked by a Customer Service Agent.

Auto Check-in

The Auto Check-in service is available only for selected Qantas domestic flights . If you haven’t already used Online or Mobile Check-in, you will receive an SMS inviting you to access your boarding pass. With three simple clicks, you will receive your boarding pass on your mobile device.

Ticket Counter Check-in

If you intend to check in at the ticket counter, you can find information regarding locations and operating hours in the Airport Guide , on Qantas Airways official website.

For domestic travel, Premium Service Desks are available for Business Class passengers, Frequent Flyers (Platinum, Gold, and Silver) and Qantas Club members for checking in or dropping off baggage. Qantas Airways personnel can assist you with arrangements for international connections, changes to your journey, and any advice you may need .

To check in at the ticket counter for an international flight, you need your E-Ticket, Qantas Booking Reference number, passport and any relevant international travel documents. In the exclusive First Check-in Suite , available in selected airports, Platinum Frequent Flyers, oneworld Emerald members and First Class passengers can check in and fast-track through Immigration. Premium Service Desks are available for Business and  Premium Economy passengers, Gold and Silver Frequent Flyers, and oneworld Ruby members in all airports .

You should be present at the boarding gate at least 20 minutes before departure for domestic flights and 40 minutes before departure for international flights . If you arrive late at the boarding gate or without your boarding pass, Qantas Airways may cancel your reservation, refuse to carry you, and/or require you to pay a service fee to cover reasonably incurred administration costs .

Qantas discounts 100 routes in 72-hour sale

Qantas has announced a snap sale on its domestic network with the cheapest route starting at $105.

Qantas has opened a quickfire three-day sale on 100 domestic routes a day after a new offering for high-rolling frequent flyers.

From Tuesday until Friday, people can book one-way tickets on one of more than 30 routes for less than $150.

Bookings can be made for May to December. The airlines says the sale offers discounts on more than one million seats.

More than 100 routes are on sale, including Launceston to Melbourne ($105), Ballina to Sydney ($1190, Sydney to Gold Coast ($129), Proserpine to Brisbane ($129), Hobart to Melbourne ($135), Brisbane to Hervey Bay ($139), Maroochydore to Sydney ($149) and Adelaide to Whyalla ($149).

On Monday, Qantas announced major changes to its frequent flyer program.

The number of frequent flyer seats available each year increased fourfold to 20 million.

It’s been a turbulent year for the former government-owned airline.

In September, chief executive Alan Joyce quit, and the High Court ruled the company illegally outsourced 1700 jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In March, Qantas was fined $250,000 for breaching workplace health and safety laws. Qantas subsidiary Qantas Ground Services illegally stood down Theo Seremetidis for telling other workers to stop cleaning and servicing planes arriving from China in February 2020.

Just days after Qantas announced a major shakeup to the Frequent Flyer program, rival airline Virgin Australia has a new change for members.

A major airline has slashed airfares to a holiday destination that more than a million Australian holiday makers flock to every year.

Budget airline Scoot is selling flights from Australia to Europe from just $355, as well as other popular overseas destinations.

Qantas criticised over disability policies after 'appalling' treatment of artist

A woman in a blue dress sitting in a wheelchair in her home.

For most people, booking a domestic flight is quick and simple.

But when Anwen Handmer tried to book a work trip with Qantas last month, it turned into a $6,400, weeks-long ordeal that made her feel like she didn't belong in society.

The 46-year-old wheelchair user is on the board of Regional Arts Australia (RAA) and needed to fly between Perth and Canberra for work.

Ms Handmer and her support worker had to book business class flights — at a huge cost — because Qantas couldn't accommodate her accessibility needs in economy.

She was shocked.

"It put [us] at a significant financial disadvantage compared to people [without disability] who would be travelling," she said.

RAA wrote to Qantas to complain about Ms Handmer's experience.

The letter, seen by the ABC, said the barriers placed in front of her just to attend a work meeting were "unacceptable" and RAA was "astounded" Qantas would treat her "in such an appalling manner".

Man, Simon Spain, in his art studio.

Chair Simon Spain said the whole process was "a dog's breakfast" that upset the entire organisation.

"We all feel very much for Anwen," he said.

"We expect better of our national carrier."

What happened?

Ms Handmer's muscular dystrophy means she doesn't have enough physical strength in her legs to allow other passengers into the airplane seats beside her.

She travels with a support worker and needs a slide board — a flat piece of wood or plastic — to transfer from her wheelchair to a plane seat.

On a flight last year, Ms Handmer was upset to be told by cabin crew her inability to move had delayed the flight and inconvenienced the crew.

In the future they said she needed to book via the airline's specific needs phone line .

A woman in a blue dress sitting in a wheelchair in her home.

So, when booking her Perth-Canberra return flights this year, that's exactly what she did.

Weeks of confusion and back and forth ensued.

Eventually it boiled down to two options:

  • two seats in business class at 50 per cent off due to Ms Handmer's Qantas concession card (which came to $6,395)
  • four seats in economy — to allow her more space — at full price (which came to more than $8,000)

"I was embarrassed that, after two weeks and more than ten phone calls, I had been unable to reach a [better] compromise," Ms Handmer said.

Issues continued even after forking out for business class tickets.

Twenty minutes before boarding, Ms Handmer said she was told even business class didn't have enough room to use her slide board.

A woman in a blue dress sitting in a wheelchair in her home.

Instead, she had to be lifted with a hoist — a piece of equipment she'd never used before.

She said it made her suddenly feel like she'd "become an object that required manoeuvring".

"Usually, you use ... hoists for the first time in a controlled, dignified environment," she said.

'An absolute violation'

These were the latest in a string of distressing incidents Ms Handmer said she's had with Qantas over several years.

Ahead of a trip in 2022 Ms Handmer enquired about using the bathroom on board.

She was told she wouldn't be able to use her urine jug at her seat and that her only options for toileting were to catheterise or wear a nappy.

"I think that's an absolute violation ... I have no option to go to the bathroom on these flights," she said.

Qantas's  access and inclusion plan states it "wants to make the journey as seamless as possible for people with disability and their families" and it's "important they are treated with dignity and respect every time they fly with us".

Ms Handmer said it didn't look like the national carrier was always practicing what it preached.

"They're talking the talk. They're not walking the walk," she said.

In a statement, a Qantas spokesperson said it had apologised to Ms Handmer.

"We are currently investigating what went wrong during the booking process and will review our processes as necessary," they added.

The ABC understands Qantas has also initiated a review of its carer fares.

'Failing as a society'

The ABC recently heard hundreds of stories from people with disability from across Australia who said transport systems across the country had failed them . Many reported being frequently slugged with extra costs for accessibility.

When it comes to  air travel , people with disability can be left feeling humiliated , have their wheelchairs broken or damaged , and have assistance animals turned away .

The policies that guide the aviation sector are currently under the microscope, with a government review set to be released later this year

Mr Spain said organisations should be making it easier for people with disability to participate in life, not harder.

"If any organisation can't carry out its inclusion policies, then we are failing as a society."

Man, Simon Spain, in his art studio.

Qantas has since refunded the difference between the business and economy class tickets.

But for Ms Handmer, it's not just about money — she wants to keep flying and for Qantas to do better.

"I need to keep travelling ... to improve things for myself and others," she said.

"I'm not the first, I'm not going to be the last, and if we don't keep trying to participate, then this stuff is just invisible."

You can also check your flight status and make changes to your reservation through the app.

In addition to mobile apps, airlines may also send updates via text, email, or push notifications. Make sure to check with your airline to see what options are available to you.

Passengers can check the status of their flight departure at SVO Airport by visiting the flight departures page on ifly.com, which provides real-time updates on flight departures, delays, and gate information.

The first thing to consider is the city’s weather. The weather in Moscow can sometimes be brutal, but there are months with comfortable temperatures.

Besides the climate, you’ll also want to research the period that offers the lowest prices, fewer crowds, and exciting festivals. Below we’ll cover the best time to visit Moscow; let us be your guide!

The Overall Best Time to Visit Moscow

The best time to visit Moscow is May through September. These months suit travelers looking for warmer weather, the best attractions, and plenty of festivals.

May in Moscow comes in late spring when the snow has melted and the weather is mild. The natural greenery is coming back, and students have returned to school. The city’s liveliness begins to kick off, with several tourists starting to trickle in again.

The good thing about visiting Moscow in May is that you’ll enjoy lower prices and fewer crowds. The average temperature in May is in the low of 45.9°F and high of 65.5°F.

It’s Moscow’s least humid month, with a relative humidity of around 64%. Days are now longer than March and April. This is the best time to spend long days exploring parks, museums, cathedral churches, and unique architecture.

Summer in Moscow starts from June to August, and most tourists flock to the city. The weather is quite pleasant, with moderate temperatures. These months experience average highs of 75°F, but temperatures in July can go up to 86°F.

June has the longest days , with some experiencing up to 17 hours of daylight. June and July are the hottest, but you have a lot to enjoy in the city. You can walk in the parks or neighborhoods to discover the city.

Boat trips are in full swing, so your afternoons are well-occupied. Additionally, you can explore Moscow off the beaten tracks, go shopping and try the local food.

Temperatures during August start to drop, but tourist areas are still crowded. You can spend time in Moscow during the first month of fall to enjoy mild temperatures and fewer crowds. The temperature in September ranges between 46°F to 61°F.

If you’re visiting Moscow from May to September, book your flight and accommodations earlier to avoid higher prices in the peak season. You can also choose your favorite festivals and events to attend.

Some of the best festivals to add to your itinerary include the following:

  • Labor Day: May 1st
  • Victory Day: May 9th
  • Day of Memory and Grief: June 22nd

Cheapest Time to Visit Moscow

The cheapest time to visit Moscow is October. This month allows for a budget-friendly vacation with the best chances to explore less crowded attractions.

In October, the climate has transitioned from hot or mild summer to a colder fall. Most tourists have left the city, and it’s quieter. Temperatures are slightly lower than in the summer months, ranging from 40°F to 54°F.

This is the time to enjoy fall colors as the plants recover from the hot summer. If you’re traveling during October, you’ll enjoy lower accommodation prices.

However, the cost of plane tickets in October can be higher because of the school holidays. So, you’ll want to book the flights earlier. While most attractions have closed down, you can still enjoy long walks in the city and festivals.

The best festivals you can enjoy include the following:

  • Day of Older Persons: October 1st
  • Remembrance Day of Victims of Political Repression:  October 30th

To get the best from your travel, ask your guide or locals for the attractions that are still open. Pack your basic fall outfits for October.

Least Busy Time to Visit Moscow

The least busy time to visit Moscow is March to April. These months are in spring when the city is recovering from the long winter.

Flights and accommodation rates are low since only a few tourists visit the city. March is not one of the best months for visiting Moscow because of the falling snow. The city has a lot to offer if you can cope with the snow that starts melting in mid-March.

It’s a quiet month, and temperatures range from 37°F during the day and 25°F at night. The weather begins to feel warmer in April, and the tourist season starts in a month.

Temperatures range from 40°F to 59°F. It’s still cold and breezy, but a better time to explore the city more quietly. The lush green parks offer the best opportunities to walk and relax with your family.

Unfortunately, most attractions have yet to open and are preparing for the peak season. You can, however, explore the picturesque architecture and enjoy the stunning views from the city’s highest points.

Pack warmer outfits  to beat the cold weather in March and April. You can also ask your hotel or locals where to find the remaining attractions that offer indoor activities.

Worst Time to Visit Moscow

Oluuuka/Shutterstock

The worst time to visit Moscow is in winter, from December to February. The cold weather and snow make it tricky for locals and visitors to enjoy the outdoors.

Most attractions are closed, so you’ll have few options if you still want to visit. Temperatures in winter can drop to around 14°F, with warmer days experiencing temperatures above 32°F. Despite the low temperatures, Moscow receives visitors in December and January.

Hotels rates are higher since more visitors have arrived to celebrate the festive season. Expect larger crowds in the city during December 31st and the first week of the New Year.

However, the city’s silence resumes after mid-January as the third month of winter approaches. January is the coldest month in the city. As February approaches, the city is quiet, with a few activities for tourists.

Hotel and flight rates are at their lowest because tourism has decreased to a trickle. You can visit Moscow in late January and February if you don’t fear the cold weather and snowy landscapes. Activities like ice skating and snowmobiling are available in The Red Square and Shunut Mountain.

You can also consider the following tips for traveling to Moscow in winter:

  • Pack winter clothing such as knit scarves, wooly hats, gloves, a coat, and weatherproof boots.
  • Try indoor and outdoor activities to avoid boredom.
  • Spend time in the snow-capped parks.
  • Stroll the decorated streets such as Red Square and St. Basil’s Cathedral.
  • Join locals to celebrate Christmas.
  • Visit Moscow Zoo
  • Explore The Garage Museum
  • Visit The Ural Buddhist Temple

Qantas frequent flyer changes: how does the revamped system work and who benefits?

The airline is adding more than 20m rewards seats on international and domestic flights

Qantas has unveiled long-awaited changes to its frequent flyer program, boosting the number of reward seats available and changing the way those seats are priced. What does Monday’s announcement mean for its 15.2 million frequent flyer members and who stands to benefit the most?

What are the changes?

The carrier has created more than 20m additional rewards seats on international and domestic routes across economy, business and first class fares, the pricing of which will vary in line with flight demand. Under the new Classic Plus Flight Rewards system, peak air fares mean higher points costs and vice versa.

The change, which the Qantas chief executive, Vanessa Hudson, said was one of the biggest expansions the carrier has made to the program in its 35-year history, gives customers more price transparency, with one frequent flyer point effectively carrying a fixed value of 1¢ for economy flights and 1.5¢ for business class flights.

Value wise, Classic Plus delivers an option halfway between Classic and Points Plus Pay seats, according to Daniel Sciberras, the editor-in-chief of Point Hacks.

“This new category is going to be fluctuating, depending on the price of the fare, but at a fixed rate of value – and it’s there to bridge the huge gap,” he said.

When do the changes come into effect?

Classic Plus bookings for international flights from 1 July are available from today. Domestic flights will follow later in the year.

Is this an improvement?

Five times more rewards seats are now available, which goes some way towards addressing longstanding criticism that the airline has too few Classic rewards seats. But that availability comes at a cost – Classic Plus seats will usually be more expensive, points-wise, to book than the popular but hard-to-find Classic seats.

Matt Graham, the editor of Australian Frequent Flyer, said: “Qantas had to do something because there have been a lot of complaints that people have a lot of points that they can’t use.” He added that he found the change underwhelming.

For those who have been accumulating points more successfully than they have been able to secure Classic bookings, the new offering gives them a way to spend points beyond the poor value and inflexible Points Plus Pay ($0.6c a point) and Qantas shop (about $0.5c a point) options. In some cases, Classic Plus offers similar or better value than Classic seats, such as for on-sale flights.

For Sciberras, the move is “definitely a plus, because they’re not taking anything away. It’s complementary to what already existed.”

Both he and Graham said they would look for Classic deals before turning to Classic Plus.

How does Classic Plus compare with Classic rewards?

Qantas has been open about Classic Plus generally being costlier than Classic. In many cases, that difference is large, particularly for premium long-haul flights, according to Graham.

“For those aspirational redemptions that most members save their points for, the cost is going to be substantially higher,” he said.

Take the example of a return flight from Sydney to Dallas, Texas. Graham found a Classic business class off-peak seat costing 253,000 points plus $675 taxes and fees. The same flight for Classic Plus customers cost 1,165,800 points plus $1,302 taxes and fees.

Points Plus Pay delivered the least value and flexibility, costing 3,131,167 points.

Both Classic and Classic Plus offer good flexibility. Unlike Classic, Classic Plus flights can be upgraded to first class.

after newsletter promotion

The system has its quirks – Graham said he had found dates on which premium economy Classic flights cost fewer points than Classic Plus economy flights, as well as return flights that were cheaper than one-way options.

How does this affect Classic rewards?

It doesn’t. The existing 5m Classic seats remain unchanged.

Who stands to gain most from the changes?

Those who have a surplus of points and miss out on the small number of Classic seats. And almost half a million Qantas Business Rewards members.

“If you’re a business owner and you’ve got a large credit card spend, you can be earning millions of points every year,” Graham said. “They just want to be able to take their family on holiday once a year and this is a way they’ll be able to find availability much more easily.”

How does Qantas frequent flyer now stack up against other reward programs?

“Qantas is one of the world leaders [in loyalty programs], they know how to engage their members so well,” Sciberras said.

Graham said he had hoped Qantas would release more Classic seats and introduce a Singapore Airlines-style second tier option, which is priced about 50% higher than its usual points rate but offers more availability.

“It’s very hard to get outsized value from the program when the points are fixed at a certain rate,” he said. “It removes some of the gaming element of trying to get more value out of your points.”

How important is the airline’s loyalty program?

Very, and increasingly so. Qantas’ Loyalty division is one of the company’s most lucrative areas year-on-year, especially at the height of the Covid epidemic The key is for the company to keep its members engaged, according to Sciberras, who believes the change “is probably going to be an overall good thing for Qantas”.

Will this help the brand after a bad year?

“Anything they can do which is good news of course is welcome … they want to show they are listening to customers,” Graham said.

The changes to the loyalty program follow a tumultuous period for the company but would have been in the making for many months, if not years, Sciberras said.
