Raigad Fort Trek

Raigad Fort Trek

Raigad Fort is a magnificent hill fortress, situated in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. It lies approximately 125 km away from Pune and serves as one of the major excursion of the city. The fort once served as the capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji, the Great Maratha king, in 1674. It was around this time only that Shivaji was crowned the King of a Marathi kingdom. Perched at an altitude of 1350 m or 4530 feet above sea level, Raigarh fort falls under the Sahyadri Mountain range of India.

The main structures inside the Raigad Fort, which today stands mostly in ruins, comprise of Queen's Quarters, Public Durbar, Watch Towers, Darwaza or gateways, Water tanks, temples, etc. The Queen's Quarters consist of six chambers in toto, meant for the queen and her attendants. The central place situated inside the fort was constructed mainly out of wood. However, apart from its base, made up of pillars, hardly anything else remains. One can also be witness to the ruins of the three watchtowers, which were once used to spot any threat from a distance.

The main entrance of the Raigarh Fort comprises the Maha Darwaja, colossal, and protected from the enemies. However, the King, as well as his convoy, used to move through the Palkhi Darwaja. The three dark and deep chambers, situated to the right of the Palkhi Darwaja, are believed to have served as the fort's granaries. One of the Raigad Fort's main attractions is a magnificent statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which is situated opposite the ruins of the main market avenue. The Samadhi tomb of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his dog Waghya is located near the market.

The ideal time to visit the Raigad fort is during November to March as winters are not harsh here. The weather remains pleasant, and you will enjoy trekking or ropeway the most during winters. Summers are hot in Raigad as the mercury reaches up to 50 degrees Celsius. Therefore, March to June is generally avoided by tourists.

Let’s TraWell Amigos!

Join us for a historic trek to Raigad Fort. Time to take out your shoes and straight head to mountains this weekend.

It’s a easy to medium grade trek with lots of historical stories of our Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ☺️

🔺 Brief: Height: 2030 Feet above MSL(Approx) Grade: Endurance level easy Region: Raigad Base Village: Raigadwadi

🔺 Short Info: “Fort Raigad is much more than a mere tourist spot. It is a sacred place of pilgrimage, which has left an imprint of the grand vision of Hindavi Swarajya as cherished by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.” Fort Raigad was the capital of the most illustrious Maratha sovereign, nurtured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It is a monument of his prophetic vision of Hindavi Swarajya.

Sightseeing: The first main place on the fort is the main door – ‘Maha Darawaja’. After the main door, Ganga sagar and some remains of the palace can be seen. Hirkani Buruj can also be seen and one doesn’t believe the heroic deeds of Hirkani (she came down the fort barefooted at night from this point). The famous ‘Takmak Tok’ or place for life punishment – is on the north side. It’s thrilling to stand near Takmak Tok which is always full of breeze. One can see the ammunition store here. The marketplace on the fort is worth watching and history lovers spend time here recalling the great warrior.

The statue of ‘Shivaji Maharaj’ is situated at the center of the fort. The Samadhi of Maharaja is also very beautiful and one can remember Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his contribution and full dedication to Swaraj. The other places to visit on the fort are Jagdishwar Temple, Koli Lake, Shirkai Temple etc. The view of ‘Lingana’ is also wonderful.

Raigad Fort is a magnificent hill fortress, situated in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. It lies approximately 125 km away from Pune and serves as one of the major excursions of the city. An amazing fort in Raigad District. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made it his capital in 1674. A fort that has a lot of history associated to it.

How would you rate this place on a scale of 1-5? Vote Below!

  • Winter Treks near Pune
  • Night Treks Near Pune

Routes from Pune : From Pune there are two major routes by which u can reach Raigad fort. 1) From Pune head southwards on NH 4 for about 48 kms and then you have to turn left from the highway after passing Kivki Village to get to Bhor…..from Bhor continue your journey westwards on the same road till you reach Mahad, which is about approx 100 kms from Bhor. Once you reach Mahad you have to turn north towards Pachad village which is the base village of Raigad fort. 2) From Pune head westwards on Paud road to reach Mangaon, which is town on NH 17 and 120 kms from Pune. After reaching Mangaon move southwards on NH 17 to reach Mahad. From Mahad reach Pachad Village by the same route described in 1.  After reaching Pachad village you can start your trek from there or the Raigad Paytha. (Vehicle parking is available at Raigad Paytha). Ensure that you park your vehichles in a proper place where it does not block any roads.

Parking Space : There is plenty of parking space at Raigad and all of these are safe parking spaces. Some of the spaces near the Ropeway area are paid parkings. Choose as per your preference.

Difficulty Level and Other useful tips:  There are 2 ways of getting to the top of the fort. One is via the Ropeway (Cable Car) or by the usual trekking route.

Difficulty level is Medium. It will take approximately 1 1/2 hour to reach to the top. For an experienced trekker it should take just just an hour. If you are planning to trek in the night, ensure that you have good flashlights with you. Watch out for crawling creatures and if you need to stop, avoid sitting near any corners coz thats where most crawling creatures would be resting.

If there are elderly people or kids in your group, you can avoid the trekking part and go via the ropeway. It takes around 15-20 minutes to get to the top via the ropeway. Although it sounds like a quick way of getting to the top, it isn't. The queue for the ropeway tickets is always huge and sometimes it takes around an hour to get a ticket.  Important Note: If you have Acrophobia (fear of heights), then please avoid taking the ropeway. The view of the valley from the cable car might scare you.

What to see on the fort:  There's a lot to see on the fort as most of the structures are still intact. The structures give us a true glimpse of the amazing history of Maharashtra and the Maratha Empire.

Camping and Food :

Raigad fort is ideal for camping. There are many closed shelters where you can stay. For food, you can either carry your own food or eat at the mini food outlets on the fort.

If you are with your family, we'd recommend that you stay in the MTDC resorts available on the fort which require advance booking. In our pics we have the MTDC resort phone numbers.

Are you looking for a historical and adventurous destination that will take you back to the era of the brave and valiant Marathas? If yes, then you should visit Raigad Fort, the magnificent fort that served as the capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji.

Raigad Fort is a marvel of engineering and aesthetics that overlooks the Gangasagar Lake and houses a statue of Shivaji.

In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about Raigad Fort, including its history, architecture, attractions, trekking options, and how to reach it. Read on to find out why Raigad Fort is a must-visit place for history buffs and nature lovers alike.

History of Raigad Fort: From Shivaji to the British

Raigad Fort has a rich and glorious history that spans over three centuries. The fort was originally built by Chandrarao More, a king of the Jawali region, in the 14th century. He named it Rairi. In 1656, Shivaji captured the fort from the Mores and renamed it Raigad, meaning the king’s fort. He also renovated and fortified the fort with several structures and features. Raigad Fort became the capital of the Maratha Empire and the site of Shivaji’s coronation as Chhatrapati in 1674. It was also the place where Shivaji died in 1680 and was cremated at his samadhi.

After Shivaji’s death, his son Sambhaji succeeded him as Chhatrapati and defended Raigad Fort against the Mughal attacks. However, in 1689, he was captured and executed by Aurangzeb , who renamed the fort as Islamgad. Sambhaji’s brother Rajaram escaped from Raigad Fort to Gingee in Tamil Nadu with his wife Tarabai and son Shahu. Tarabai led the Maratha resistance against the Mughals from Raigad Fort until Shahu was released by the Mughals in 1707. Shahu claimed the throne at Raigad Fort but later shifted the capital to Satara in 1714.

Raigad Fort remained under the nominal control of the Maratha kings but the real power was wielded by the Peshwas, who became the de facto rulers of the Maratha Empire. The Peshwas neglected Raigad Fort and focused on their new capital Pune. In 1818, during the Third Anglo-Maratha War, the British attacked and bombarded Raigad Fort with cannons and mortars. They dismantled and looted most of its structures and treasures and left it in ruins.

Architecture of Raigad Fort: A Marvel of Engineering and Aesthetics

Raigad Fort is a masterpiece of engineering and aesthetics that showcases the skill and vision of Shivaji and his architects. The fort is situated at an altitude of 2700 feet above sea level and covers an area of 12 square kilometers.

The fort has two main parts: the lower fort or Petha Killa and the upper fort or Bale Killa . The lower fort has three sections: Zunjar Machi, Khubladha Buruj, and Mena Darwaja. The upper fort has four sections: Takmak Tok, Raj Bhavan, Jagdishwar Temple, and Samadhi.

Maha Darwaja

The main entrance gate of Raigad Fort is called Maha Darwaja or Great Door. It is carved out of solid rock and has spikes to prevent elephant attacks. It is also designed in such a way that it is not visible from a distance but only when one comes close to it. The Maha Darwaja leads to a long passage that has several smaller gates and chambers along the way.

Rani Vasa or Queen’s Palace

The six-rowed palace that housed Shivaji’s wives and concubines is called Rani Vasa or Queen’s Palace. It is located on the western side of Raigad Fort and has a beautiful view of the Gangasagar Lake. The palace has several rooms with windows and balconies that were used for different purposes such as living, dining, dressing, bathing, etc. The palace also has a secret passage that leads to an exit gate for escape in case of emergency.

Gangasagar Lake

The artificial lake that supplied water to Raigad Fort is called Gangasagar Lake. It is located on the eastern side of Raigad Fort and has a circumference of about one kilometer. The lake has a filtration system that purifies the water before it reaches the fort through pipes and channels. The lake also has a small island in its center that has a temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga.

Mena Darwaja or Zunjar Machi

The lower entrance gate of Raigad Fort that leads to a bastion with a steep drop and a view of the valley is called Mena Darwaja or Zunjar Machi. It is located on the southern side of Raigad Fort and was used by the royal ladies and their attendants. The bastion has a small temple and a water tank. The view from the bastion is breathtaking and one can see the Konkan region and the Arabian Sea from here.

Palkhi Darwaja or Hirakani Buruj

The upper entrance gate of Raigad Fort that was named after a brave woman who climbed down the fort wall at night to feed her child is called Palkhi Darwaja or Hirakani Buruj. It is located on the northern side of Raigad Fort and was used by Shivaji and his palanquin. The story goes that a woman named Hirakani, who was a milkmaid, was trapped inside the fort after the gates were closed at sunset. She had to feed her child who was waiting outside the fort. She decided to climb down the fort wall using vines and rocks and reached her child safely. When Shivaji heard about her courage and love, he named the gate after her and built a bastion in her honor.

Raj Bhavan or King’s Palace

The three-storeyed palace that served as Shivaji’s residence and administrative center is called Raj Bhavan or King’s Palace. It is located on the highest point of Raigad Fort and has a commanding view of the surroundings. The palace has several features such as a throne room, a court hall, a treasury, and a secret chamber. The throne room has a replica of Shivaji’s original throne that was made of gold and silver. The court hall has a gallery where Shivaji’s ministers and generals sat. The treasury has a vault where Shivaji’s jewels and coins were stored. The secret chamber has a tunnel that leads to an exit gate for escape.

It is located on the western edge of Raigad Fort and has a height of about 1200 feet. The cliff has a platform where the condemned were tied and pushed off by soldiers. The platform also has iron rods that were used to hang the heads of the executed as a warning to others.

Samadhi or Tomb of Shivaji

The final resting place of Shivaji that has his ashes in a tomb along with his dog Waghya’s statue is called Samadhi or Tomb of Shivaji. It is located near the Jagdishwar Temple and has a simple structure with a dome and pillars. The tomb has a stone slab that bears Shivaji’s name and title in Devanagari script. The tomb also has an eternal flame that burns in his memory.

Information About Raigad Fort

The above information about Raigad Fort will help you chalk out an itinerary easily. This wonderful edifice is a fine example of the Maratha era and has a lot for you to explore. To start with, its glorious past dates back to the 1600s.

Raigad Fort: History

Raigad Fort, formerly named as the Fort of Rairi, was seized by the brave warrior king of the Maratha Dynasty, Chhatrapati Shivaji. He renamed it as the Raigad fort. The Mughals, later in the year 1689, took over this fort, and the sixth Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, titled it ‘Islamgad’. An armed expedition by the British East India Company targeted this fort as a piratical stronghold. It is believed to be partially destroyed owing to bombardments from Kalkai Hills in May 1818.

This fort has witnessed various historical events and has managed to retain its old-world charm beautifully. It still flaunts the grandeur of the Marathas through its architecture, which draws a variety of tourists every year.

Raigad Fort: Architecture

Raigad, meaning the King’s fort, was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji. However, the true mastermind behind the Raigad Fort architecture was the visionary architect Hiroji Indulkar. Every nook and cranny of Raigad Fort reflects his architectural expertise.

Once you reach the fort, the sole pathway towards the entrance is the ‘Maha Darwaza’. Its boundaries and watchtowers were strongly built and have stood the test of times. The interiors consist of eight chambers for eight queens of the king. At the back of the chambers, there is an enormous lake called the Elephant Lake (once used for bathing elephants).

As you proceed, you will reach the Durbar Hall that houses the throne of Chhatrapati Shivaji. The Durbar Hall is believed to be an example of an acoustic architectural arrangement. If you whisper anything from any one corner of the Durbar, it can be easily heard at the throne. When you walk out of the Durbar and walk down the lane, you can spot the sculpture of Chhatrapati Shivaji on a throne. It is placed right in the centre of the marketplace. If you walk further to the right, you will find the Jagadishwar Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva). The samadhi of Chhatrapati Shivaji and his loyal dog ‘Waghya’ are placed in the front of the temple.

FOrt Russell Neighborhood Historic District

Photo: Looking West down B Street in the Historic District, Moscow. The Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Photographed by User:Davidlharlan (own work), 2012, [cc-3.0 ], via Wikimedia Commons, accessed March, 2023.

Original nomination [1]

The Fort Russell Historic District consists of 116 structures in nine square blocks, and fractions of twelve contiguous blocks, in the hilly northwest section of Moscow, Idaho. The district is almost totally residential in use. Only three buildings near the perimeter stand as exceptions: a school and two church buildings, one still used for worship and the other in service as a Senior Citizen's Club. These uses reflect the ambience of the neighborhood and its environs; it is an old residential area, its southeast corner within a few blocks of Main Street, ringed with service institutions: three more school buildings, four more churches, a Carnegie Library, the Post Office and Courthouse, and a city park are within a few blocks of the district. There are no commercial intrusions within it.

The district is strongly homogeneous not only in use but in style, scale, and, as it were, texture. The houses are predominantly from the late Victorian to early twentieth century periods. Fine examples of Queen Anne , Eastlake , Gothic Revival , Colonial Revival , Classic Box and Bungalow appear. In most of these styles, examples occur on both the "mansion" and the cottage scale. Not unexpectedly, this is especially true of the Bungalow style. The pattern prevalent in many turn-of-the century neighborhoods—whereby large homes are built on the corners of blocks, which later fill in with more modest dwellingss—holds true for the Fort Russell neighborhood. But while structures in the district range from small to grand, none exceed two- and-a-half stories, and most are one or two. Finally, the homogeneous streetscapes of residential, structures built largely from 1880 to 1920 and in related styles and scales are knit together by the texture of building material—mostly frame and brick&m dash;and by the texture of the rows of mature deciduous trees which distinguish the neighborhood and contribute much to its character.

The significance of the Fort Russell neighborhood District is both architectural and historic. It is manifestly significant for the rich display of early residential architecture it provides in a town of under 20,000 residents. It is significant as well for the historical connections between the houses and many of the people who built the town: the early entrepreneurs and professionals whose commodious homes expressed their positions of leadership in the community, and the more anonymous citizens whose neat cottages and bungalows grew up between the big houses—indeed, were sometimes built by the owners of them—a generation or two later.

The architectural interest of the district is immediately apparent to the eye. As specified in Section Seven, a neighborhood larger than the area which could reasonably be nominated as an historic district is generally continuous with it, and contains individual structures of substantial significance. It is noteworthy that five National Register properties the Cornwall house, the McConnell mansion, the Carnegie Library, the Methodist church and the Federal Building are located in the less architecturally cohesive but still handsome blocks to the south and west of the district. Moscow's Main Street, which contains a high percentage of early buildings, is only a few blocks further west. Thus perhaps a fifth of the area of this small city a town devoted primarily to servicing the wheatlands round about and the University of Idaho on the west side of town turns out to be of unusual architectural calibre. The Fort Russell district is the most architecturally cohesive core of this generally rewarding area.

Additional nomination [2]

Like Moscow's downtown, the Fort Russell neighborhood began developing during the last few decades of the nineteenth century, with the earliest dwelling dating to 1875 according to City of Moscow GIS property data. A total of 59 of the 243 total sites, nearly one full quarter (24%) within the district's expanded boundaries date prior to 1900, with construction and commerce slowing nationally during the mid-to-late 1890s as a result of the national financial crash that hit in 1893. Once construction began again, around the turn of the century, the neighborhood experienced a major boom with approximately 13% dating to the single decade between 1900 and 1910 at which time Moscow was growing rapidly as a regional commercial center. Approximately 18% of the buildings within the expanded district were then built between 1911 and 1920 as the city continued to grow steadily, another 14% between 1921 and 1930, and finally 20% going up between 1931 and 1940 indicating that residential growth continued at a higher rate than commercial growth during the Great Depression years of the 1930s during which only three commercial structures were built in the downtown district. The remaining 11% is made up of 26 post-1940 dwellings scattered throughout the neighborhood.

The Fort Russell Neighborhood Historic District represents a "rich display of early residential architecture ... significant as well for the historical connections between the houses and many of the people who built the town." It is associated with events, including community planning and development, education, entertainment and recreation, and religion. The District is an embodiment of the architecture and landscape architecture during the period of significance. The neighborhood retains a strong historical character and continues to represent its period as an intact historic district within the city of Moscow. Notwithstanding the presence of some modern buildings the district today retains integrity of location, design, setting, feeling, and association, and though some changes have been made over time to individual dwellings, overall integrity of workmanship and materials is present.

The expanded period of significance for the district begins in 1875, the earliest recorded construction date for any resources within the district boundaries, and extends through to 1940. The district exists as an early residential neighborhood with strong ties to the city's earliest pioneers and businessmen who were responsible for settling, establishing and growing the city and its economy. Post-1940 buildings are scattered in relatively small numbers within the proposed boundaries (accounting for just 11% of buildings within the expanded boundaries). Though modern construction begins to represent a different character moving beyond the period of significance, the presence of these buildings does not detract from the district's strong character and identity as a significant neighborhood reflecting Moscow's early growth.

In the area of architecture, the Fort Russell neighborhood is significant for its residential, educational, and religious buildings and its overall built character, which correspond to the first several decades of the city's growth and development. Both the high-style architecture of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, including Victorian styles such as Queen Anne, as well as the more modest, accessible architecture of the 1920s and 1930s, such as Bungalows and English Cottage or Tudor Revivals, are found within the Fort Russell neighborhood. Though the architecture within the district varies resulting in an eclectic collection of buildings, the architectural forms and styles within the neighborhood are directly representative of national architectural trends for each decade during the period of significance, as well as representing the economic, social, and demographic patterns of city of Moscow itself.

The Fort Russell neighborhood's significance in the area of community planning and development is similar to what has been outlined for architecture, following both national and local trends related to economics and community development. The various additions within the district were platted during the city's earliest days, being laid out generally in a grid pattern with spacious lots intended to serve as an escape from the city's bustling town center. Over time, many of the lots were subdivided and filled in with smaller, more modest dwellings on smaller lots during the 1920s and 1930s accommodating the city's growing middle-class population while continuing to support the entrepreneurs that helped build it up originally. The planning and development evident within the Fort Russell neighborhood is also reflective of its central location, containing not only residential development but also schools, churches, and a major city park, all woven in to accommodate the needs of this diverse neighborhood as well as the needs of the city's general population who could access this area easily since it lies within walking distance to the city center.

Entertainment and recreation, and landscape architecture are related themes within the Fort Russell neighborhood, being represented by the planning and development throughout the neighborhood as well as by East City Park, which is situated in the southeast corner of the expanded district boundaries. This park was laid out in its original location and form during the city's earliest days—being reflected on the earliest city maps and Sanborn maps. The presence of the park reflects early intentions at providing recreation and embracing formal landscape architecture, by positioning the park within a reasonable distance of the city center so that it was accessible, yet removing it far enough from the central business district to ensure a relaxing, enjoyable environment within the park. Parks established around the turn of the twentieth century were intended to provide a rural- or countryside-style escape for city dwellers who were often unable to interact with the natural environment in any other way. Landscape architecture is additionally present within the neighborhood through the generally consistent grid pattern, setbacks, tree-lined properties, and landscaped residential yards found throughout.

In the areas of education and religion, the Fort Russell neighborhood is significant for containing a number of these buildings. The expanded district boundaries contain two schools, John Russell Elementary built in 1928 replacing an older school on the same site, and the old Moscow High School, built in 1912, as well as a 1906 Carnegie Library. Several churches are also found within the expanded boundaries, including Methodist, Catholic, Unitarian, Episcopal churches dating between 1900 and 1930; one contemporary church is also found within the district. The presence of a variety of educational and religious buildings further represent the fact that it was clearly intended to support not only the economically and socially diverse population living within the neighborhood, but also those who had easy access to the neighborhood due to its central location and its proximity to the city center. That these buildings were welcomed into this neighborhood also reflected the early importance of education and religion within the city's social structure.

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

 Sir Francis Canker/Getty Images

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR.

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

Notable Kremlin Towers

Robert Schrader

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated.

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable.

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.
