Frequently asked questions.

GuruWalk is an international community for pay-what-you-please walking tours that connects tourists with tour guides all around the world. Our mission is for you to be able to enjoy this type of tour in any place you can imagine.

The GuruWalk community is formed by "gurus" (local guides) who are open, attentive, fun people with great knowledge of the city and who will be your friends wherever you travel.

The other part of the community are the "walkers," or tourist who opt for this type of tour over the more traditional tours, who enjoy unforgettable experiences and most importantly, love to travel around the world doing guruwalks.

A "free walking tour" is a guided tour at a travel destination, where a local guide explains history, culture, and lifestyle. Currently, it is the first option that tourists choose when they visit a new city.

The concept can be a little confusing since "free" in English is a word that immediately makes you think free of cost. While becoming a part of the community, making a booking, or setting up a tour on the platform is 100% free, the traveler has to pay the guide at the end of the tour based on his experience. This concept is commonly referred to as a pay-what-you-please walking tour, because it empowers the client to pay based on their satisfaction with the tour and encourages the guide to always do their best.

At GuruWalk, we call them "guruwalks" so our walkers don’t get confused with the concept. Our intention is for them to understand the concept better and then give a fair remuneration to their Guru, so that we can all keep enjoying this type of tour all across the world.

Look for the city that you want to visit and then choose from all the guruwalks that are available, the different themed experiences, the different neighborhood and the various types of activities to find the best option for you. Book the tour for free through the online platform, receive the email confirmation with all the info and you’re ready to go!

All that’s left to do is show up to the guruwalk to enjoy and learn about other cultures in a fun and entertaining way. Don’t forget to tip your guru’s good work and have a great time.

The star question that the walkers always ask! You choose how much to give, you can take into consideration how satisfied you were with the tour and how much you can afford.

Our gurus are the best tour guides who are at it day after day, who are creating fun and entertaining tours so you can get to know the most important aspects of a city, they know a lot about the city you’re visiting and they’ll help you to have the trip of a lifetime.

This is why most walkers on GuruWalk generally give between 10 o 20€ per person, but as we said, you can choose to give more or less depending on your experience.

If you’d like to join our community of international gurus, all you have to do is click the link here. We’re waiting to get to know you!

Williamsburg Brooklyn Food Tasting and Walking Tour

Best_Walking_Tour_NYC_Williamsburg_Brooklyn_Food_Tasting_and_Walking_Tourjpg

The Williamsburg neighborhood has a lot of bars, restaurants, pubs and delis and for me is one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Brooklyn (one of our favorite BBQ spots called “Die Fette Sau” is located here). A visit to Williamsburg should definitely be on your itinerary because it’s a nice contrast to hectic Manhattan.

On the Williamsburg Brooklyn Food Tasting and Walking Tour, a New York guide will show you the most important corners of the neighborhood and where to get the most authentic and best food.

The 3 Best Street Art Walking Tours

Street art is an expression of art that is very common and popular in New York. If you keep your eyes open while walking around the city, you will see a lot of them.

Especially Brooklyn with the Bushwick and Williamsburg neighborhoods are known for their variety of graffiti and street art. These street art walking tours will take you to the most important spots – and you will learn a lot about the artists and the context of the motifs.

Graffiti & Street Art Walking Tour

Italy_Streetart

Brooklyn is famous for its bold and bright street art, but it’s not easy to know where to find these creative works. With this walking tour of the Bushwick neighborhood, take in the diversity and culture of the neighborhood’s urban street artists. Check out massive murals and intricate designs as you take to the streets to learn how Brooklyn’s best can turn anything with a surface into a stunning work of public art.

Sidewalks and Skyscrapers: Street Art Is This Way

Best_Street_Art_Walking_Tour_NYC_Sidewalks_and_Skyscrapers__Street_Art_Is_This_Way

This walking tour shows that there is also street art and graffiti worth seeing in Manhattan. You start your exploration in Soho , and then in two hours learn the stories behind the large and small works of art. Some of the graffiti is an impressive 20 meters high, so always have your cameras ready!

Private Graffiti & Street Art Walking Tour

Best_Walking_Tour_NYC_Private_Graffiti___Street_Art_Walking_Tour

The Bushwick district is probably the most famous part of New York when it comes to street art and graffiti. Here there are many colorful, very elaborately designed and creative murals. You will see the different techniques that the artists have to master and learn a lot about this own culture and art.

For many artists, this is their main profession and their graffiti just look awesome! For this reason, take a look at this Start Art Walking Tour!

Reason enough to take a closer look at the Hamilton Walking Tours, where you will learn a lot about his life, his works but also a lot about the history of NYC, which is strongly associated with him.

What Our Guests Loved

Ubud Story Walks is something different. It’s a fun, entertaining and refreshing way to delve into Ubud’s past. The knowledgeable guides place as much emphasis on how they tell a story as they do on what they’re sharing, which means all sorts of magical and mystifying details are revealed. I believe the best way to get to know a place is to walk its streets, which makes Ubud Story Walks one of the best ways to get to know Ubud.

Julia Winterflood

We had a fantastic time walking around the historical centre of Ubud! Even though we've been based in Bali for a few years, we'd never had an actual tour of some of Bali's most iconic landmarks and learning about the history was fascinating. Our guide was hilarious and full of information and it was a lovely and relaxing way to learn so much. The tour was early in the morning which was perfect timing as the temperature was still cool and we were able to witness the morning bustle of Ubud's famous markets. 10/10 would recommend!

1. define your goals and target audience.

Start by asking yourself the key question: What’s the core focus of your tour?

It could range from history and culture to art and food.

Knowing this sets the direction of your tour.

Next, picture your ideal participant . Are they history buffs, foodies, or art enthusiasts?

Consider their fitness levels, interests, and age group.

This will help you design a tour that resonates with and is accessible to your intended audience, ensuring they have the best experience possible.

2. Choose a Location and Theme

Picking the right spot is crucial.

Select a specific area or neighborhood that intrigues you and has rich stories to tell.

Maybe it’s known for its vibrant street art, historical landmarks, or a unique culinary scene.

Now, weave a theme that links your location to the interests of your audience.

This theme becomes the heartbeat of your tour, giving it a clear focus and making it more engaging and coherent for your participants.

3. Research and Identify Points of Interest

This is where you dig deep.

Hunt for landmarks, secret spots, historical sites, or cultural hubs that align with your theme and appeal to your audience .

Each point of interest should add value to your tour’s narrative.

Spend time gathering compelling facts, anecdotes, and stories about these places.

This research is what will transform your tour from a simple walk into an immersive experience, rich with knowledge and intrigue.

4. Plan the Route and Logistics

Mapping out your route is more than just connecting dots on a map.

You can use online tools to sketch out a path that’s walkable, enjoyable, and feasible for your group.

Pay attention to distances and ensure each leg of the tour is manageable. It’s a good idea to clearly mark where your tour will start and end, choosing spots that are easy for everyone to find.

Don’t forget to estimate how long it will take to walk between each point, and to include time for rest breaks and those all-important photo ops.

Lastly, do a little homework on the practicalities: check the opening times, any entry fees, and if certain spots require permits or special permissions.

Speaking of logistics, don’t forget about walking tour insurance either.

5. Craft Your Narrative and Content

Now, let’s bring your tour to life with stories and content.

Develop captivating descriptions for each stop, ensuring they’re packed with info that ties back to your tour’s theme.

Think about how to keep your audience hooked – interactive elements like quizzes, games, or thought-provoking questions can add a dynamic layer to your tour.

If you’re guiding the tour yourself, practice your spiel to get the timing and delivery just right.

Remember, your narrative is what will make the tour memorable and unique.

6. Promote Your Tour

If your goal is to attract participants, promotion is key.

From an online standpoint, we put together a guide on SEO for tour operators , which you’ll definitely find helpful.

Get creative with flyers, eye-catching posters, and engaging social media posts.

Make sure to highlight what makes your walking tour special – is it the hidden stories you’ll share, the off-the-beaten-path spots, or the delicious food stops?

Offering a variety of tour options, like private or themed tours, can also appeal to a broader audience.

The right promotion will not only draw attention but also build excitement and anticipation for your walking tour.

Take a look at our guide on walking tour marketing strategies as well.

7. Test Run and Refine Your Tour

Before launching your tour, it’s crucial to do a test run.

Walk the route yourself or with a small, trusted group.

This is your chance to time each segment and see if the itinerary flows as smoothly as you imagined.

Take notes on what works and what doesn’t.

After the test run, solicit honest feedback and be ready to tweak your content and approach.

This step is all about refining and perfecting your tour to ensure it delivers the best experience.

Bonus Tips to Plan the Perfect Walking Tour

Don’t forget the comfort of your participants.

Plan for little breaks along the way for snacks, drinks, and restroom stops.

These pauses are also great for sparking casual conversations.

Offer suggestions for additional places to explore or nearby attractions that align with the tour’s theme.

Always be ready to adapt to unforeseen circumstances, whether it’s a change in pace or a detour.

And most importantly, let your enthusiasm and love for the location and theme shine through – it’s contagious!

Planning a Walking Tour Doesn’t Have to Be Difficult

Creating a walking tour is an adventure in itself.

It’s a journey that combines thorough planning with creativity and a deep appreciation for the chosen locale.

Remember, the heart of a great walking tour lies in its ability to connect people to places in an intimate and memorable way.

While you’re working on planning your tour, keep in mind that your passion and knowledge are the keys to crafting an experience that resonates long after the walk is over.

So, step forward with confidence, and happy touring!

What to Expect and How to Prepare for a Walking Tour

re walking tour

Before you set out on your travels, here’s a quick checklist so you can make the absolute most out of your trip!

So, you’ve booked — or are thinking about booking — a walking tour. Well, congratulations! You’re about to experience a new (or familiar) city like never before. With City Experiences’ team of expert tour guides, and amazing partners, you’ll be in the best of hands as you explore bustling avenues and adventure through side streets like a local. Before you set out on your travels, though, it’s important to give yourself a checklist so you can make the absolute most out of your trip. Coming prepared is a great way to ensure you’ll enjoy every single second of the tour. Plus, you’ll save time and money by not having to buy any extra supplies while on the tour — money that can be put to better use by, say, enjoying some local food and drink! So, without further ado, let’s run through some basics.

What to Wear

Now, everyone wants to look their best when out and about in a new city, but when you’re planning your outfit for a walking tour, it’s important to focus on function in addition to fashion. That doesn’t mean you can’t still dress to the nines, but you’ll definitely want to wear clothing that you’ll be comfortable in for the duration of the tour — and you’ll want to wear shoes you’ll be comfortable having on all day, since as you might have guessed from the name, you’ll be doing a bit of walking on the walking tour. Oh, and this might go without saying, but you should check the weather before you head out, and bring different layers, as well as a raincoat or umbrella in case of the weather. (It’s always important to check with the tour operator, but most of the walking tours operate rain or shine!)

What to Bring

After you have your outfit squared away, the next thing on the checklist is what you’re planning on bringing along with you on the tour. First, you’ll want to take some sort of bag or backpack to store your belongings and any souvenirs you pick up on the tour. Do keep in mind that any museums or attractions you visit may have baggage restrictions, so it’s always a good idea to check. A solid water bottle is a must-bring item, especially if your tour is in a hilly area or a hot, humid climate. Speaking of the heat, it’s always a good idea to bring some high-SPF sunscreen, since a wicked sunburn can derail an entire trip. (That goes for winter tours, as well!) A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are also key for protecting your face and eyes from the sun’s UV rays and being able to take in all of the scenic views. Oh, and to capture all those scenic views, we always suggest bringing your camera with you to preserve those memories forever — just make sure you check with your expert guide before taking pictures in museums or other places where flash photography might be prohibited.

re walking tour

Now that you’ve got your outfit and your gear checked off the list, let’s check out some of the awesome and exciting tours City Experiences has to offer!

New York City – There’s so much to see and do in New York City, you’ll understand right away why they call it “The City That Never Sleeps!” The Big Apple is exactly that — BIG — so getting a good look and feel for certain neighborhoods is a great way to narrow down your visit and really enjoy yourself. The New York City Wall Street Walking Tour is a great place to start, since you’ll get to dive into the history of Wall Street, the center of modern finance and the oldest part of Manhattan, dating back to when New York was known as New Amsterdam. You’ll check out the world-famous bull, and enjoy highlights such as the New York Stock Exchange, Bowling Green, Fraunces Tavern, the Fearless Girl, and more points of interest. Then, pop up above Houston Street for the Greenwich Village NYC Food Tour , where you’ll discover the Italian heritage and culture that has shaped this historic area — while tasting some of the best and most authentic Italian food New York City has to offer, of course! You’ll sample nine food tastings at seven beloved family-run eateries in the Village — enough food for breakfast and lunch!

Paris – If you’ve never been to the City of Light, you’re going to love it! Paris is home to some of the best food, wine, and cultural centers in the world. The Complete Louvre Tour: Mona Lisa & Beyond is a lovely way to see some of the world’s most exquisite art and architecture. You’ll get skip-the-line access into the Louvre Museum and avoid the worst of the daytime crowds, then check out the collection with an expert guide versed in art history, including the Mona Lisa and Venus De Milo. After you’ve quenched your thirst for culture, quench your actual thirst with the Paris Latin Quarter Tasting Tour , where you’ll enjoy small bites and drinks — enough food for a light, pre-dinner snack — at several emblematic spots in the historic Latin Quarter and discover the secrets of an authentic French aperitif.

San Francisco – There’s so much more to San Francisco than what you’ve seen in pictures, and a walking tour is the best way to experience all of it! Have an expert local show you around one of the most intriguing spaces in the United States, San Francisco’s legendary Chinatown, on the San Francisco Chinatown Walking Tour: Through the Dragon’s Gate . You’ll see the largest and oldest enclave of Chinese customs and traditions outside of Asia , and indulge in some warm fortune cookies at the famed Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory — and take a few special treats home! Did you bring your appetite? Then the Ultimate San Francisco Food Tour: North Beach, Chinatown & Beyond is the tour for you. You’ll scarf down over 10 delicious tastes across six to seven different establishments , and eat your way through three of San Francisco’s most exciting neighborhoods — a perfect introduction to the city’s cuisine and history.

Rome – The Eternal City is one of Europe’s gems, and a Welcome To Rome: Twilight City Stroll & Gelato-Tasting is the way to start your Italian journey like a true Roman. You’ll take in the most famous sites in central Rome in less than three hours, including the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps, then cool off with some delicious gelato and learn what gives it such vibrant flavors. Then, once you’ve built up an appetite, you can fill up on Italian delicacies on the Rome Street Food & Pizza Making Tour , where you get to experience Rome’s centuries-old street food tradition with delicious bites from seven small businesses, and then learn to make your very own pizza. “ This was an amazing experience and we loved every part of it. It was really cool to swim by the waterfall after hiking through the jungle. Chen was a great guide, really friendly, and planned the day out including the food stops really well.  The food stops themselves were fantastic, some of the best food we had whilst in Malaysia. During the trek, he would stop to explain some of the fauna and even Malaysian history, which was all very interesting.  Would highly recommend this tour to anyone who enjoys the outdoors. ” – A Tripadvisor Reviewer (read more reviews )

North America walking & trekking tours

Intrepid travellers look out over Monument Valley

No matter the question, hiking is always the answer…

…especially in  North America  where the landscapes are beautiful, and the national parks are plenty. No, seriously. You’ve got  Denali National Park  and Kenai Fjords National Park in  Alaska , Bryce Canyon in  Utah  and about a million in  California  (think  Yosemite , Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Park just to name a few). But we’ve barely scratched the surface. On our North America walking trips, marvel at naturally formed rocky monuments, discover scenery too breathtaking not to share on every social media platform and make some of the best travel memories of your life – feet first.

Frequently asked questions

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join a north american walking trip.

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What are the types of walking & hiking holidays?

We predominantly provide two styles of walking & trekking holidays:

Center-based – this style of holiday spends all (or majority) of time in the center of the action. Think Chamonix in the French Alps, Dobbiaco in the Dolomites or a rustic hotel in Yosemite Valley. Enjoy the comfort of the same room every day (as well as only unpacking once) and a selection of the best restaurants and other attractions in the neighborhood. All you have to do is sit back and relax as we pick the best combination of walks available, either directly from the foot of your accommodation or just a short transfer away (often a public bus or train). To put it bluntly – you'll be fairly comfortable while experiencing the best walks and hikes going 'round.

Point-to-point – this style of vacation makes you walk from one place to the other pretty much every day. However, we do throw in a rest day every now and then, depending on the region and the amount of hiking we need to cover on a daily basis. On point-to-point trips, you'll start in A and finish in B. Think about the Inca Trail, the Mount Everest Base Camp trek, the Hadrian’s Wall hike or the Mont Blanc Circuit. In most cases, we'll transfer your main luggage across to the next destination, so all you need to carry is the essentials (water, sun protection, waterproofs, extra layers, snacks and a camera).

What is included in a walking and trekking trip?

We include accommodation as per the itinerary, as well as transportation to and from trailheads and to all other included activities (note: this transportation is often public as that's the way we like to travel). We also include ALL hiking permits. On top of that, we provide our highly qualified and experienced leaders to guide you throughout the trip.

How fit do I need to be for a walking and trekking trip?

We have walks ranging from relatively easy to challenging. But no matter what degree of difficulty or distance you choose to walk, we recommend that you have a reasonable fitness level to ensure you get the most out of your walk or hike. Commit to a physical training program around six weeks before you depart. Here are some suggestions:

  • Long walks: go on some long walks of 3-6 hours duration before you leave, wearing the boots you’re taking and carrying a small backpack to get comfortable with carrying your gear for long stretches.
  • Aerobic exercise: running, distance cycling and the various aerobic classes offered at gyms (like pump, spin, zumba and circuit classes) all help to give you fitness and stamina.
  • Strength training: doing body weight training like pushups, squats, dips, lunges, etc. helps to build up your muscle strength, which is needed for the steady climb up a mountain if you’re embarking on this type of hike (bootcamp sessions are perfect for this type of training).

What should I pack for a walking trip in North America?

It depends on where you're going, what the weather will be like and how difficult the walk that you plan to do is. Generally, it's a good idea to ensure you have the following essentials:

Comfortable walking shoes (make sure they're broken in if you buy a new pair!)

Backpack/day bag

Leggings, shorts or hiking pants

A loose, long-sleeved shirt

Sweater or sweatshirt

Retractable walking poles

Reusable water bottle

Are Intrepid's North America walking tours accessible?

We're committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Discover the Capital’s Incredible Past On Self-Guided History Walking Tour of London

Love This? Save and Share!

A humungous history tour of London where all you’ll need is a healthy curiosity and a good pair of shoes.

Lace up your boots, history buffs. We’re about to take you on a walk of London’s long and winding history. Today you’ll see slices of London dating right back to the city’s true inception under the Romans, hear tales of grizzly deaths in the Middle Ages, adventure and vice.

Best of all, it’s totally free and self-guided. You can pick your own pace and be your own tour guide.

We’ve included information about the spots you’re visiting to fill out a picture of London throughout the ages. There are a few spots you might want to nip into along the way, The Tower of London and The Golden Hinde, or perhaps the art gallery and hidden Roman amphitheatre at the Guildhall but at the end of the day, you’re the boss.

You can stop along the way for food or a break as you like, you’ll have plenty of options. If you’re walking during the week, Leadenhall Market has loads to offer. Otherwise you could hold on to near the end of the tour and hit Borough Market where you’ll find things open at the weekend too.

But enough talk! Let’s get to it…

Practical Information about the Historical Walking Tour of London

London’s Roman Wall, Barbican

Shakespeare’s Globe, The Southbank

Distance

8km or just under 5 miles.

About two hours of walking, plus time for any of the attractions you want to see and maybe a break for lunch. We’d plan for around 4-5 hours but it can be done faster if you want.

Difficulty of Tour

Easy to middling. There’s a lot of walking and some stairs but on the whole no rough terrain or major obstacles.

Admission Fees

  • The Tower of London: £33.60
  • The Golden Hinde: £6.00

Places Visited on the Tour

  • London’s Roman Wall
  • The Guildhall
  • Monument
  • Leadenhall Market
  • All Hallows by the Tower
  • The Tower of London
  • Tower Bridge
  • The Golden Hinde
  • Winchester Palace
  • Shakespeare’s Globe

Accessibility

The tour is very accessible, you won’t be required to climb any madly steep hills or navigate any rough terrain, though it does require a lot of walking.

If that’s not your cup of tea then feel free to pick the route up anywhere you like. Cutting out the section between Tower Bridge and The Golden Hinde will save you a lot of walking.

If you need breaks you’ll be able to find plenty of places for food and drinks along the way as the tour snakes through central London which is full of pubs, cafes and restaurants.

Stops on the History Tour of London

Stop one – london’s roman wall .

Romans London

We’ll start our tour where the history of London really begins in earnest: with the Romans. London owes much to these conquerors from the Italian peninsula, not least its name. The word London comes from the Latin Londinium, which is what the Romans would have called this city when they came here around 2000 years ago.

Oh and by the way, when they came here they built the place. Much of what is old and important about The City of London (AKA The Square Mile) was laid out in the Roman era, including the wall you’re looking at.

The walls they built still quite accurately mark where the City of London ends and the rest of London begins. They also picked the location for London Bridge and a very important civic centre we’re visiting next.

→→ →→ 7 minute walk from the Roman Wall to the Guildhall.

Walk west on St Alphage Garden towards Wood St. Turn left onto Wood St. Turn left after about 50 metres. Turn right towards Basinghall St and take the stairs after, about 50m turn left towards Basinghall St.

Stop Two – The Guildhall

Guildhall

This impressive building is The Guildhall. It’s the administrative centre of The City of London (not to be confused with Greater London) and the home of The City of London Corporation, stewards of the oldest continuous democracy in the world.

The site was passed down through the many generations of London’s rulers. It began life as an amphitheatre in the Roman Era, was first used as an administrative site by the Saxons and has continued in that function for over a thousand years.

The Great Hall dates back to 1440 and is truly stunning, and the original Roman amphitheatre’s foundations can be seen in the basement. Other than visiting the latter and the stunning collection of art at the Guildhall Art Gallery, you can’t just enter and wander about. You can book yourself on a tour though. Read all about that in the guide below…

→→ →→ 12 minute walk from Guildhall to Monument

Walk south on Basinghall St towards Masons Ave. Turn left onto Gresham St and continue onto Lothbury. Turn right onto Princes Stand then left onto Threadneedle St and continue onto King William St and follow it to Monument St.

Stop Three – Monument

Fire of London Monument

Now you’re at Monument. This needle commemorates the history of the Great Fire of London. You might expect it to be a dour reminder of the people who lost their lives, and in some way it does remember them – but in truth, most people got away from the flames and in total only six people died.

Monument is mostly about the devastation it wreaked upon those that survived, large portions of London being burnt to the ground. It’s also a hopeful reminder of the ability to rebuild and get back on your feet.

Great architect of his day, Sir Christopher Wren , designed the needle. It was completed in 1667.  It stands 202 feet away from the place where the fire began on Pudding Lane.

→→ →→ 6 minute walk from Monument to Leadenhall Market

Walk north on Fish St Hill towards Eastcheap, take the zebra crossing and continue onto Gracechurch St. Follow it until you see Bull’s Head Passage about 70m on your right. Take the passage and turn left onto Lime St Passage. Leadenhall Market will be in front of you.

Stop Four – Leadenhall Market

Leadenhall Market

Leadenhall Market gives us another opportunity to bring up the Romans. Yes, more of those guys (just in case you didn’t believe us about how much of an impact they made on London).

They first set up a bazaar here two millennia ago. That tradition has lived on to the present day, though the way it looks (and the things on sale) will have changed a lot. The market as we now know it was officially established in 1321.

Legendary mayor Dick Whittington gets his name into these annals of history in 1402 by purchasing the market for the City of London Corporation (the folks who run the City of London from the Guildhall) making it into even more of a hub of commerce.

The current style dates to the Victorian era and was designed by Horace Jones. In more recent history it was used as the exterior shot for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter films.

While you’re here, this might be a good spot for a bit of lunch or a break. You’ll have heaps of spots to choose from, take your pick. Our fav would be Old Tom’s Bar but, like many of these Leadenhall Market eateries, it’s only open Monday – Friday.

→→ →→ 9 minute walk to All Hallows by the Tower

Walk back the way you came but don’t Bull’s Head Passage, follow the road about 60m to Fenchurch St. Walk the same distance again and turn right onto Rood Ln. Turn left onto Eastcheap and continue onto Great Tower St 436.

Stop Five – All Hallows by the Tower

All Hallows-by-the-Tower or St. Mary the Virgin or All Hallows Barking

The City of London is a place of many churches . Some of them are truly ancient, or at least have ancient roots. All Hallows by the Tower is so old that no one really knows its origins.

The first record of it comes from a mysterious listing in the Doomsday Book (written in 1086) to the property of Barking Abbey being ‘28 houses and half a church’. That half a church is said to be All Hallows.

The church survived the Great Fire of London, and its connection to this and one of our favourite London characters, Samuel Pepys , is why we love it so much. Pepys writes in his diaries – a must-read for any London history fan – that he watched the fire raging through his beloved city from All Hallows’ spire. Here are his words:

“I up to the top of Barking steeple, and there saw the saddest sight of desolation that I ever saw; every where great fires, oyle-cellars, and brimstone, and other things burning…  … as far as I could see it”

→→ →→ 3 minute walk to The Tower of London

Follow Gloucester Ct to the end, turn right and then left. You can’t miss it.

Stop Six – The Tower of London

Tower of London

A London location that needs no introduction, The Tower of London has been the stage for many of the city, and the country’s great historical moments. It’s played prison to dissidents and rouges from Guy Fawkes to the Kray Twins.

Many have lost their lives in the execution chambers here but none are probably more iconic than Anne Boleyn, wife (or should we say ex-wife) of Henry VIII.

The site as a defensive position on the riverside dates back to the Normans. William the Conqueror built a stone tower here in the 1070s to secure his power over the city.

The tower you’re looking at is much more recent than that but is still home to some very long-standing traditions. The Ceremony of the Keys for one, is a key handover ritual that’s been performed every day for the past 700 years.

Because we know you’re wondering, the last person to be executed here was Josef Jakobs. The year was 1941 and he’d been found guilty of spying for Germany and executed by firing squad.

→→ →→ 5 minute walk from the tower of London to Tower Bridge. Follow the river east and take the stairs under the bridge to reach crossing level. Again, you can’t miss it.

Stop Seven – Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge London

It’s now time to head to the south side of the river. We’re going to do that by crossing London’s most iconic bridge. Yep, it’s Tower Bridge.

Tower Bridge was finished in 1894 and was actually designed by a fella that’s come up in our tour already (no, he’s not a Roman this time) – it’s Horace Jones, the mind behind Leadenhall Market. Over 50 designs were submitted for the bridge but it was his that won out.

The bridge famously opens in the middle to allow boats to pass. The span of the bridge is 800 metres and the two towers that support it are 65 metres tall each.

By crossing the bridge you’re becoming one of the 40,000 crossings made on average every day.

→→ →→ 15 minute walk from Tower Bridge to The Golden Hinde

Follow the river west along Queen’s Walk. When it comes to an end take the stairs onto Tooley St and cross at the foot of London Bridge to take the stairs back down to the riverside. Follow Montague Cl to Cathedral St where you take a sharp right and follow Cathedral St 50m to The Golden Hinde.

Stop Eight – The Golden Hinde

Your walk along the riverfront should lead you past a pretty stunning galleon. That would be The Golden Hinde , or more accurately a replica of it.

The Golden Hinde was the ship that Sir Francis Drake made his circumnavigation of the globe in. His trip was one of the greatest (and most questionable adventures) in British history. It was essentially a state-sponsored pirate raid.

Drake’s mission was to steal as much Spanish gold as he could get his hands on and bring it back to England. He was so successful on the Pacific coast of South America he couldn’t return the way he came and was forced to circle the globe to get home.

His haul made him and Queen Elizabeth enormously rich. From one Spanish ship alone he took the equivalent of £480m in today’s money…

This boat was built from years of research on the plans and design of Drake’s ship. It was finished in the 70s, making its own circumnavigation of the globe from ‘74 – ‘79.

→→ →→ 1 minute walk to Winchester Palace.

You basically need to keep walking west about 30 seconds, no longer than a minute. You’ll see the ruins of Winchester Palace on your left.

Stop Nine – Winchester Palace

The Rose Window Winchester Palace

Still with us? You’ve put in quite a stretch today. We’re nearly at the end of our tour. The penultimate stop is Winchester Palace . The Palace is certainly not in its former glory. All you’ll be able to see here now is some ruins of what was once the grand home of The Bishop of Winchester.

It was built in the 12th century and the section that you can see standing survives from that time. It would have once been part of the Great Hall. The property itself would have encompassed around ten acres of land.

So what was the Bishop of Winchester up to in London? Back in the day, the bishops were often required to be in the capital on important business. Palaces like this would have been their city residences – looks like these guys weren’t fans of the vow of poverty…

These residencies would have been outside of the jurisdiction of London law, known as Liberties. The one you’re standing in now was known as the Liberty of the Clink and has a bit of a nefarious past. That’s because one of the bishops in the Middle Ages took advantage of his immunity to turn the neighbourhood into a red-light district.

The women who worked the streets here became known as the Winchester Geese, and it’s widely believed that this is where we get the term ‘goosebumps’, though it meant something quite different back then.

→→ →→ 7 minute walk from Winchester Palace to Shakespeare’s Globe.

Walk west on Clink St towards Stoney St for 160m. Turn left onto Bank End and after 40m turn right onto Park St. Then shortly after turn right onto New Globe Walk. You’ll see the Globe in front of you.

Stop Ten – Shakespeare’s Globe

Shakespeare Globe

If there’s any historical location to top the Tower of London for the most iconic award on our tour, it’s probably got to be our last stop, Shakespeare’s Globe.

This is a faithful reconstruction of the original theatre that The Bad would have had his plays performed. It’s only slightly off from the original location, the original having burnt down in 1613 after a pyrotechnical mishap set fire to the roof.

This iteration is known as Shakespeare’s Globe and they put on some fantastic performances of Shakespeare’s work. One of our favourite things to do in London is grab a cheap standing ticket and experience the plays just like the common folk would have back in Old Bill’s day (without all the rotten tomato throwing of course).

Historical London Walking Tour Practical Tips and Map

  • Make sure you wear comfortable shoes. You will want them for this as you’re going to be on your feet a lot.
  • You’ll be walking past heaps of cafes, pubs and restaurants so feel free to hop off the walk at any point and grab some food. If you make it all the way to Tower Bridge without having eaten, head to Borough Market . It’s very near The Golden Hinde and has so many great options for food.

My 7 Favorite Walking Tours In Rome And Why They’re Great For Solo Travelers

A nyone who has read Eat Pray Love will understand the mystique of Rome. There’s the appeal of the food, the history, the “dolce vita” lifestyle, and of course, the beauty of the people and the country. Like the author of the book, I ventured to Italy on my own but to a yoga retreat instead of an Italian language immersion. Not far from Rome in the tiny medieval town of Pitigliano, I enjoyed the camaraderie of a small group of like-minded “friends,” all eager to explore Tuscany’s small towns and venture to the thermal waters of Terme di Montecatini to slather in mud as part of the wellness experience.

This wonderful week left me refreshed and ready to travel sans a group. Spending a few days in Rome before I flew home was what I had my heart set on. I booked a room at the beautiful and centrally located Hotel Locarno and set out on my adventure. To make the most of my time and profit from the knowledge of local experts, I signed up for a range of walking tours that provided a safe, educational, and welcoming experience for solo travelers like me.

Here are my seven favorite walking tours that I took in Rome:

Walks Of Italy

1. welcome to rome twilight city & gelato tasting .

I’m a strong believer in getting the lay of the land before setting off on your own. You’ll see the “footprint” of a place, glean knowledge about its history, and profit from the experience of locals who can share their insights and answer questions. Then, you’re free to efficiently explore in more depth those places that have piqued your curiosity. This type of tour also builds confidence, especially if you’re not used to traveling by yourself. You’ll visit well-known sites like Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, the Roman Forum, and the Colosseum — all giving you good reason to return for a deeper dive on your own, at your own speed.

The tour that I took with Walks of Italy was my first introduction to Rome as a solo traveler. I picked the “Welcome to Rome: Twilight City Stroll & Gelato Tasting,” as the 6:30 p.m. start best fit with my hotel check-in time and I knew that the tour would show me some good eats as well as great sites.

There’s a magic to experiencing an ancient city like Rome in the dusk hours when there are fewer cars and fewer people in the streets. You can almost imagine what it was like during Nero’s days or during the building of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. When darkness falls and lights come on, and fountains and buildings are illuminated with a romantic glow, you can truly bond with the city. The Trevi Fountain was enchanting at this hour, as was the Pantheon, while breaks for pizza and ice cream added to the almost spiritual feeling.

2. Pristine Sistine

No trip to Rome is complete without a visit to the Vatican, an independent state within the city. But as everyone knows, the crowds there can be overwhelming. Lines queue up for hours to enter the Vatican Museum and view sacred rooms and Leonardo da Vinci’s Sistine Chapel. If you arrive pretty much any time during the day, no matter what the weather, you’ll find that you need a huge dose of patience.

My suggestion to avoid this is to take a very-early private tour to unlock the doors. The number of entrants is limited and you’ll find you have the Sistine Chapel largely to yourself, as remarkable as that sounds.

Led by Walks of Italy , I met my guide at an entrance marked ingresso gruppi at 7:15 a.m. for a “Pristine Sistine” small group tour. I was able to experience the Vatican in near silence before most people were even awake. A stiff espresso or two will motivate you to rise at the early hour required for this tour. But, even I, a committed night owl, found that the reward was worth it. I appreciated the one-on-one attention, the unhurried explanations of what was inside, and the quiet while in the chapel. After climbing the 551 stairs to the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, I happily walked past the long lines that had formed during my time indoors.

Pro Tip: There is an elevator to the rooftop of St. Peter’s Basilica that will save you 330 steps. However, you will still need to climb the rest to the top. To avoid crowds here as well, plan a separate visit and arrive at the dome before 8 a.m.

3. VIP Colosseum Underground Tour

The Colosseum is a must-visit when in Rome. And now that the lower level is open for tourists, there’s even more of a demand to spend time at this well-preserved Roman amphitheater.

Again, I chose a small group, early-hour tour where I had personalized attention and no crowding. All of my questions — I had many as a travel writer — were answered without hesitation. With Walks of Italy’s skip-the-lines “VIP Colosseum Underground Tour,” I was able to roam freely, photograph without pushing people out of my way, and quietly absorb the incredible feat of construction that is the Colosseum. Starting at 8 a.m., the tour met outside the Colosseum and then continued to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. If you’re on a tight schedule, there’s a solo Colosseum-focused tour that will get you in and out with time to make an afternoon or evening flight.

Eating Europe

4. twilight trastevere timeless traditions.

Everyone knows that Italian cuisine is fabulous. But do you really understand the nuances of its preparation? Or the history behind some of the dishes? And have you met the people who put their heart and soul into the cooking? To truly appreciate this, I scheduled a “Twilight Trastevere Timeless Traditions” walking tour with Eating Europe .

Trastevere, a medieval neighborhood across the Tiber River, has a history as a Jewish enclave and offers a blend of tradition and experimentation. This tour offered peeks into local bar favorites, street foods, and a variety of stops for snacks and bigger bites. We stuffed ourselves with prosciutto and melon, biscotti dipped in chocolate, porchetta, and suppli (traditional rice croquettes filled with mozzarella) before indulging in a pasta amatriciana and cacio e pepe dinner at a cozy trattoria. Beverages included wine (of course) at an extensive tasting in a cellar, birra, and limoncello, with a gelato stop to end. I was thankful that we were walking!

After this delicious introduction to Trastevere, I took the advice of my guide and confidently returned the next day to explore further on my own. In the Jewish Ghetto (also known as the Ghetto of Rome), I delved into the area’s culinary heritage, feasting on carciofi alla giudia at the small trattoria Nonna Betta , recommended by Anthony Bourdain in No Reservations . I also toured the Great Synagogue and wandered through the Sant’Angelo (rione of Rome) where I discovered intriguing shops selling religious and secular knickknacks.

Archeological Tours

5. domus aurea .

I was so enamored with the magnitude of history surrounding me that I signed up for (and highly recommend) two in-progress excavations. The Domus Aurea exploration required me to wear a hard hat and took me to an active archeological dig at the site where a huge domed residence once stood across from the Colosseum. Called the “Golden House,” Domus Aurea was built by Nero to revitalize Rome after the fire of 64 A.D.

Pro Tip: Advance reservations (including the Raphael art exhibit) are essential as the tours are only available on weekends.

6. Le Domus Romane Di Palazzo Valentini

The fascinating story of Le Domus Romane di Palazzo Valentini came to light because of Rome’s strict regulations regarding excavation and preservation. Whenever construction is contemplated, careful consideration of the location’s potential historical significance must be taken. And, indeed, that was the case here. While cleaning up an area designated for present-day use, the remains of ancient homes were discovered beneath Palazzo Valentini; a self-guided tour is now offered. Opposite Trajan’s Column, this underground site sheds light on the lives of several generations of inhabitants dating from the days of Emperor Hadrian.

Pro Tip: If you’re claustrophobic, the archeological tours may not be for you. Both involve being underground amid crumbling ruins and semi-darkness. Also, Domus Aurea is a bit tricky to find, so allow extra time if you go.

7. Borghese Gallery

A look at some of the works from the country’s famous artists and sculptors is di rigore when visiting Rome. I opted for a self-guided tour of the famous Borghese Gallery where I had the opportunity to admire Bernini and Canova sculptures as well as paintings by Caravaggio and Raphael. As I was short on time and this was my last night in Rome, I reserved an evening entrance when the crowds were less intense, with a chance to also stroll through the villa gardens. Guided tours are available for those who prefer a more structured visit.

When you choose to travel solo, it helps to be somewhere where it’s considered “normal.” In Rome, I felt comfortable; comfortable enough that I could ask directions, dine by myself, and join small group tours without feeling lost in the crowd. It didn’t hurt that the shopping, dining, and overall magic of this historic city was enticing around every turn, nor that my efforts to speak Italian were appreciated.

Ps - EE also does a 'Taste of Testaccio' tour that was lots of delicious and interesting fun. Maybe more so than the Trastevere tour.

re walking tour

Did this walking tour in 2019, and loved everything about it. So much so, that before we left Rome , we made our way back to Trastevere to find some of the places that we went to on the tour (& we were successful!).

I’m going back in September and looking at the company again for other tours.

I did also book with this company in Amsterdam in December 2019. Unfortunately the tour was cancelled as they didn’t reach minimum numbers (maybe I was the only one booked?!) - but communication with the company was great. Refund was quick as well.

Thank you! I am going to check them out.

City Of Estevan Re-Launching Historic Walking Tour

re walking tour

History buffs and those looking to learn more about the city they live in (or someone just looking to get outdoors away from their screens) have a good chance to do so in Estevan. The city is trying to bring a little more local history into the spotlight with a new walking tour.

In a release this morning, the city announced they were launching a redesigned historical walking tour in a partnership with the Souris Valley Museum. The walking tour was originally designed in the 1980s, and was due for a bit of an update.

The tour focuses on original buildings in Estevan, such as the original school and city hall, as well as a look at how the courthouse was built and some history of the old brick plant. Other historical events, like the miner's strike of 1931, will also be prominent parts of the tour.

"Each stop has a little bit of a story about who lived there, what's significant, even architecturally, what's significant about the property," Westling said.

"Taking a look at different perspectives on things, and maybe you're not really into history but the way we adapted it, some of the content is a fun little tidbit," Westling said. "There's trivia, there are photos of the before and after, and it's a really neat way to do something different."

The city will partner with the Souris Valley Museum for this tour, and they provided some help in revitalizing the old tour.

"We are thrilled to partner with Tourism Estevan on this one-hour audio-guided tour," said Souris Valley Museum Executive Director Mark Veneziano, "where participants can explore the historic downtown core and listen to fascinating commentary about the city's architecture, vibrant culture, and storied past."

The tour is free of charge.

Walking Luxury Tours

A group walking.

The World’s Best Walking Tours.

Meet the locals, on foot, at eye level..

If you’re like us, you think of travel as more than just a check-list. When you strike out, it’s because you crave experience and discovery, not just monuments and museums. You want to understand what’s behind the touristic façade that most people never penetrate. You travel, because you want to step outside of your life and engage with people of other cultures. That’s why Classic Journeys handcrafts the world’s best walking tours—to immerse you into the history and culture of the places you visit.

Local culture is just two feet away.

Walking is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in a local culture. When you’re on foot, the world can’t slide past you faster than you can absorb it. You’ll have time—and proximity—to smell lavender lingering on your clothes even after you return home from Provence. Join us to encounter rainforest tribespeople you never would have met and cottage gardens you never would have seen. Experience the tempo of a Mediterranean village in the hour before sunset in a way you never would have noticed if you breezed through in a vehicle or traveled on your own.

So, what is a walking tour?

We’re glad you asked! Spend part of each morning and afternoon with your feet on the ground, getting up close to the region’s culture and natural history. Your walks might include a village tour, a seaside stroll, or a local guide’s favorite path through an oasis, vineyard, or red rock canyon. Because your group averages just 8-10 guests, your footprint is small. And since your Classic Journeys guide knows all the locals, you can take your time and blend in with the world around you.

Forbes magazine “Luxury Walking Favorites”

If all of this sounds like a great way to explore, you’re in good company. Forbes magazine loves this way of traveling, too, and has called our Tuscany & the Cinque Terre and Morocco tours their “Luxury Walking Favorites”. Join us to see for yourself why the best walking tours in Europe, the U.S., South America, Asia and Africa all have one thing in common; the guests who choose to travel with Classic Journeys.

A brand-new travel taste to offer

We are seeing a shift in the way people travel in 2023 - travelers are seeking experiences that offer them something unique and special. For tour operators, these trends offer exciting opportunities to create walking tours that cater specifically to these avid travelers.

re walking tour

Four Steps on How to Start a Walking Tour Business

Preparation and planning are essential when it comes to starting a successful walking tour business.

Research local attractions:

Do your research to get an idea of the trendiest and most popular attractions in your area. Most walking tours explore the area with specific interests, ranging from history tours to nature tours. This will allow you craft a business plan with tour packages that appeal to a variety of tourists, as well as provide unique experiences for those interested in exploring more off-the-beaten-path sites.

re walking tour

Know your target market:

Taking the time to understand the needs and interests of your target customer base can help you create an experience that will draw in tourists. This will keep them coming back.

When researching your potential customer base, consider factors such as age, gender, interests, budget, how they like to travel, and how they prefer to book tours.

re walking tour

Know the legal requirements:

Operating a walking tour in your state may come with its own local government or regional regulations, however, typically you will need to meet the same requirements as running any business.

These requirements might include obtaining the necessary permits and registering your business. They may also include complying with health and safety regulations, paying local or federal taxes, complying for General Liability Insurance, and other demands to ensure the security of your customers.

TIP: Start this process as soon as possible since each step can be time-consuming. Having all the paperwork completed when you are finished setting up is ideal.

Open a business bank account

When it comes to your business and the management of the finances associated with it, the number one rule to remember is this: always keep your personal money separate from your business income.

Maintaining a firm division between the two serves as personal asset protection and provides you with better organizational order when it comes to money.

re walking tour

Determine routes for your tours:

Creating a route for your walking tour is one of the most significant aspects of starting a walking tour business.

  • Which attractions and hidden gems do you want to include in your tours?
  • How long will each tour last?
  • How far apart are the sites from each other?
  • How much time should be allotted to each site to explore and take pictures?

In addition, take into account the time of day that your tour will be running. This will help you determine how much walking is involved, how long it takes to get between sites, and how comfortable it will be for customers to walk around.

Make sure that you are also familiar with each location so you can provide an informative overview and stories to make the tour more enjoyable.

Make sure to provide all of these necessary details in your tour description. This can help your potential guests feel the vibe of your tour right through your description (which we will be talking about more below!).

Create your tour itinerary:

When planning your tour itinerary, the niche you choose will be a major factor and should not be overlooked.

For example, if your niche was historic sites in a particular area, then you would plan to take your guests to landmarks and points of interest related to this theme. If the focus was local cuisine, however, you may want to take visitors to restaurants or farms that are well-known for their tasty food and drinks.

As essential as it is to determine the places you will visit with your customers, it is also imperative to structure how each day of running your business will look. As a business leader and tour guide, it is up to you to create the logistics that turn an idea into reality. This will ensure everyone involved has the most enjoyable experience possible.

Establish safety procedures and regulations:

Safety is of the utmost importance when it comes to running a walking tour business.

When setting up your safety procedures, consider how you will ensure customer safety during your walking tour.

This can include:

  • Make sure that all participants are aware of any health hazards associated with the tour and how to deal with them appropriately.
  • Having emergency contact information for each participant.
  • Make sure that your staff is trained to handle any difficult or dangerous situations they may encounter while guiding the tour.
  • Having a plan in place in case of inclement weather. This plan should include how to protect your customers from external hazards such as traffic and other potential risks that can’t be avoided.
  • Ensure customers are aware of how to properly interact with any animals or wildlife they may encounter.
  • Be familiar with local regulations regarding how many people can be on a tour and how close they can get to certain areas or attractions.

Communicate these safety protocols and reminders to your customers:

  • Display it on your business website
  • Attach these reminders along with your tour alerts and notifications via SMS or Email Automation
  • Have a quick orientation before the tour
  • Most of all, make sure your tour guides are well-trained and informed of these safety guidelines, as well.

re walking tour

Calculate startup costs:

Calculating start-up costs and budgeting for walking tour businesses is a must if you want to avoid a major financial bump later.

Luckily, starting this kind of business doesn't require too much capital. Plus, if you lead the tours yourself, that cuts out the need for extra expenses like salaries for employees. The majority of your costs should then be geared toward developing a successful marketing strategy.

Taking the time to research how much money you need upfront is worth it in order to ensure a solid foundation and long-term sustainability for your business.

Decide on pricing:

When it comes to deciding on pricing for your walking tour business, there are various options.

You can opt to offer free tours and make money from tips and gratuities, or you can set up a fee-based service.

Whichever option you choose, it's imperative to ensure you're offering high value at that price point. Take the time to look at your competitors, and find out how much they're charging and what they offer in return.

TIP: Aim to exceed expectations! This helps in making sure customers come back for more and happily recommend your services to their friends.

Now that you've got your tour up and running, it's time to get the word out about your business.

This is where marketing comes in.

There are tons of ways to promote your walking tour business online. However, how you go about promoting it will depend on what kind of audience you're trying to reach.

Use social media

For example, if you're targeting younger tourists, consider using social media and influencers for promotions.

Post tour updates and promotions on your social feeds like Facebook and Instagram. You may use high-quality photos and video clips of your tour sights. Or you may write a short blog about what to expect on your tour and post it on your feed.

Also, make sure that each of your posts links to your official website. This way, you can make it easier for your potential guests to book with you online.

Here's our complete guide on how to use social media in your tours and activities.

Create an effective website

An effective website is crucial to getting your walking tour business off the ground. It not only provides a platform for you to promote your tours, but it also gives potential customers an easy way to book and pay for their experiences.

Make sure that your site reflects the brand of your tour company business – how do you want people to perceive you?

You should also make sure that all of your contact information and booking information is visible on each page. This helps create trust between customers and tour operators or tour companies.

To get more insight into how to build a great tour-focused website with higher conversion rates, check out this article .

Do the traditional marketing game

If you want to focus more on the local market and people living in the area, try advertising in local publications or radio stations.

You can also create promotional material such as flyers and brochures that you can distribute around town.

Word-of-mouth marketing

Finally, don't forget about word-of-mouth marketing; good old-fashioned face-to-face conversations often yield positive results!

Partner with Online Travel Agencies

Partnering with online travel agencies (OTAs) can be an effective way to increase your reach and boost bookings .

By connecting with OTAs like TripAdvisor , GetYourGuide , and Booking.com , you can get access to a larger audience and make it easier for customers to find and book your tours.

Make sure you’re visible on OTAs and review sites like TripAdvisor by optimizing each of your listings with all the information they need. Have quality photos, your complete business name, descriptions, keywords, and other relevant information.

For more information on how to successfully partner with OTAs, check out this guide .

Manage customer expectations:

Above all, be clear on what guests should expect from your tours.

Make sure you set the tone for how the tour will be conducted, how many people you'll accept, and what day-of activities may entail. And make sure all of the necessary information is detailed on every tour listing you post online.

Inform guests about:

  • Tour itinerary (hours and details)
  • What to expect in each spot (local cuisines, insider tips, fun facts, souvenir shops, and famous spots)
  • Safety guidelines and reminders
  • What to bring and wear (sunglasses, sunblock, or what footwear is best)

In it, you can also offer additional tour services for an additional cost (private tours and experiences).

Now that your walking tour business is set up and promoted, it's time to put the plan into action.

Create a schedule:

It's important to create a structured schedule for how you'll run your tours.

Start by setting up the routes and itineraries for each tour type, as well as how long they will last.

You can also create a series of additional activities that customers may be able to opt for (such as food tours and beverage tastings or visits to local attractions).

Equip your tours with the right gear and equipment:

Make sure you have the right equipment and gear for your tours.

Depending on your chosen niche, this may include first-aid supplies, audio-visual materials, and other necessary items (like binoculars or magnifying glasses) that customers will need during their tour.

Have an online booking system for seamless management:

Finally, have efficient online booking system in place to manage bookings and payments .

This will help you keep track of how many people sign up for each tour, how much money you're making from each one, and how satisfied your customers are with the experience.

Aside from marketing and tour management, effective booking software also offers all the tools like POS solutions for receiving payments in person, a booking widget for your online bookings and positive reviews, and a centralized dashboard for end-to-end management.

Here's our complete guide on how to choose a reliable booking system for running tours.

Train your tour guides

Now that you have a proper system in place, it's time to hire a tour guide (if you choose to hire one or some). Aside from having the right attitude and a thorough knowledge of the area, they need to be trained on how to handle potential risks (such as medical emergencies or bad weather) and how to ensure customer satisfaction.

Provide your guides with the necessary training and information so they can deliver a memorable experience for your customers.

The last step is to officially launch your walking tour business.

Promote them on your official website and social media accounts, share the details of your tours with press outlets and reach out to the local community. This will raise awareness of your services.

Additionally, now that you have a healthy customer base, don't forget to solicit their feedback and use it to improve your walking tour business.

All in all, starting a walking tour business is a wise idea and an incredibly rewarding venture, as long as you don’t forget the preparation. Make sure to plan, market, and execute your walking tour well—with quality content on your business website or tour listings that sets the correct expectations for potential clients.

Don’t forget to equip yourself with the necessary gear and choose the right booking software for efficient management that fits your goals and vision.

These tips can also be applied for free walking tours, where you can make money from gratuities. In any case, ensure that you train your tour guide properly so they can provide a pleasant experience for guests.

Above all else, make sure to have fun and enjoy the journey it takes to get there. So what are you waiting for? Take that first step towards beginning this amazing journey and launch your own successful walking tour business!

1. How do I start my own tour company?

To get started as a business owner in the travel business, your next step is to refine your business idea into a concrete plan. If you're passionate about a walking tour business, perform a thorough market analysis to understand your potential customers. This will enable you to understand what makes your tours stand out.

Once your concept is clear, obtain the necessary permits and licenses from your local authorities. It's crucial to set up business accounting practices, including separating personal and business accounts, to ensure financial clarity and asset protection.

Don't forget to design and print business cards to aid in networking and marketing. Before you launch, consult with your local tourism board for additional insights and secure business insurance to safeguard against risks. With these steps, you'll be on your way to a successful travel business.

2. Is it advisable to use booking software when starting a tour company?

Absolutely! When you start a tour company, integrating booking software is a wise move for several reasons:

  • Professional Image: From the outset, your tour company will appear organized and professional, instilling confidence in potential clients.
  • Operational Efficiency: As you navigate the complexities of starting a tour company, booking software streamlines reservations, minimizing manual errors and freeing up your time.
  • Insightful Data: The software can offer insights into your clientele, aiding in refining your tours and marketing strategies.
  • Growth Readiness: As your tour company venture gains traction, a pre-established system will effortlessly handle increased bookings.
  • Secure Transactions: Integrated payment options within the software ensure smooth and safe financial transactions.
  • Enhanced Customer Journey : A straightforward booking process can lead to satisfied customers and positive feedback.
  • Round-the-Clock Bookings: With software in place, clients can book tours anytime, maximizing your business opportunities.

Incorporating booking software from the beginning lays a robust foundation, ensuring your new business is well-equipped for future growth.

3. Are walking tours profitable?

Walking tours can be profitable, especially if you have a unique selling point that differentiates you from other tours. Consider your operating costs, ongoing expenses, and how you'll transport guests if necessary. Tour pricing should reflect these costs while offering value to customers. Repeat customers and referrals can significantly boost profitability. Having a business mentor can also help, especially if you are still starting your very first business.

4. How do free walking tours make money?

Free walking tours typically operate on a tips-based model, where guests pay what they believe the tour is worth. This model can be profitable if the tour guide provides exceptional value. Some tour guides also collaborate with the local tourism community and local businesses, receiving commissions for bringing in customers.

5. How do I promote my walking tour business?

Promote your tour guide business by creating a basic website optimized for search engines. On your website, tell your brand story, establish a booking process, and showcase your tour design. Establish a Facebook page to post photos and engage with your target customers. Online advertising, such as banner ads, can be a powerful marketing tool. Collaborate with travel agents and leverage walking tour marketing ideas like offering discounts for new customers. As your business grows, consider investing more in marketing collateral and strategies.

6. What booking software features do walking tours need?

For a tour operator business, booking software should offer easy scheduling, allowing customers to book in just a few clicks. Selling tours should also be easy, so look for a platform that simplifies checkout and upselling. Features should include calendar integration, payment processing, and automated reminders. As the business grows, advanced features like analytics to understand customer behavior can be beneficial.
