The most AMAZING culinary experience of my life! I went to La Tour recently for my birthday and it was a perfect evening. The surprise menu was delicious and interesting. The staff were pleasant and accommodating. And the atmosphere was comfortable and light. I honestly cannot say enough positive things about this restaurant and my experience there. Just PERFECT.

Photo of Steven W.

This was an excellent dining experience. Simply, they earn their Michelin star. The courses flow together, they are brilliantly conceived. The favors intense with subtle saucing. They are a feast for the eyes as well. The only weakness is the menu descriptions do not prepare you for the excellence to come. Our simple dinner consisted of an appetizer with a foamed sorbet and fish with almonds. The salad was an exquisite garden that exploded with favors. Next was a squash prepared three ways. Main course, the cod was very light, delicate, perfectly presented, perhaps poached or sou vide? The fromage course was varied and exquisite although heavy for what we had to that point. But who can turn down french cheeses? For desert I had rhubarb confit. There are about ten tables, the room extremely comfortable and quiet. Timing of the courses was perfect as well. Excellent wine menu of the region. Our waiter suggested a very reasonably priced Sancerre SB that excellent. The entire evening cost was 112 euros, the best dining experience for that price I have experienced.

At the Michelin-starred Restaurant La Tour on Sancerre’s main square, chef Baptiste Fournier forgoes today’s culinary trends for simple, sophisticated French fare. He offers just three starters (langoustines, salmon, and mussels) and four entrées (fish, chicken, beef, and lamb) on the weekdays, and a superbly priced five-course menu on the weekends, complete with fish and meat, a cheese course, and dessert. For those looking to indulge, there are also three set menus—the Promenade, Pleasure, and Confidence—that adhere to the same minimalism, but surprise with innovative flavor combinations. Whichever you choose, be sure to pair your meal with a bottle of local Sancerre.

Michelin guide’s point of view.

Nestling at the foot of a 14C tower in the heart of the famous wine-growing village, this traditional townhouse boasts an elegant, contemporary-style dining room that has retained a handful of period touches (beams, ceiling and mouldings). Simplicity, authenticity and bags of character are the hallmarks of dishes elevated by high-quality ingredients, such as cep and onion ravioli served with kale, or chuck of veal with cauliflower. Delicious, well-balanced flavours and judicious use of condiments: pared-back cuisine that makes for a delicious culinary interlude.

31 Place Nouvelle Place, 18300 Sancerre, France Tel: +33 (0) 2 48 54 00 81 GPS: 47.332044, 2.840047

More than twenty years ago, when I first set foot in Sancerre, I gravitated towards the Place Nouvelle Place , at the heart of the town. Back then it was the little bar at the south end of the square that drew me in, the endless supply of cold beer on a hot summer afternoon an irresistible attraction. Walking through the place a few months ago, however, my eye was drawn instead to La Tour , a restaurant at the opposite end of the square. I didn’t notice it on that first visit more than two decades ago. That might well be because it didn’t exist at that time, but then again I might simply have overlooked it. I might also have overlooked a rhinoceros rampaging through the town centre, such was my focus on getting my afternoon beers in.

In truth it is difficult to miss La Tour . The entire front wall of the restaurant folds back, allowing diners an unobstructed view across the lower half of the square. Immediately I sensed it was a tourist magnet. Was that an American accent I heard wafting over the cool night air? Something a little Teutonic too? And perhaps a smattering of Geordie English? Only slightly perturbed, I investigated. The menu looked interesting, and the wine list seemed nothing short of encyclopedic, at least when it came to the world of Sancerre, and what more would you want when dining in the town itself? A few minutes later I walked away, but not before making a reservation for Friday evening.

True to form, two evenings later the front wall was open, and I was enjoying a view across the square. Admittedly, in the early evening the view was dominated by parked cars, and a local guy swinging himself around a lamp post more times than I thought was conceivable. If he wasn’t stoned when he started, then he probably felt like he was when he finished. But as the sky grew dim, the streetlights came on, and the chimneys atop the roofs began to glow an illuminated blue; the square was once more a joy to behold.

La Tour, Sancerre

The food was also a joy to behold, and to taste. Betteraves, citron et verveine was a curious but ultimately enticing combination of summer vegetables, mainly wafer-thin slices of courgette more than beets, with melon, in a rich and velety foam hiding pieces of preserved lemon and verbena, and this was followed by a second surprise starter themed around caramelised onion , which took things up a gear in terms of cooking, and in terms of flavour complexity, moving from purity and freshness to more texture and grilled flavour here. These were both lovely dishes, and the main courses maintained the same high level of quality. Magret, courgettes, stilton et olives saw some perfectly pink duck hit the plate, while the poisson du jour turned out to be sea bass, the flesh moist, soft and flaking easily, the skin perfectly cooked, grilled to a crisp. After there came a belt-busting cheese course, featuring a huge range of goat’s cheeses (of course) but also other selections from all over France, as well as a huge slice of stilton to which, I found, resistance was futile. I washed them all down with the final glass of my 2012 Les Angelots from Pascal Reverdy ; this is a great wine, although I think this top cuvée from a great vintage was perhaps broached a little too young. On reflection, I should perhaps have chosen a more mature example, or a less exalted 2012 that would have been a touch more approachable. Our repas finished – as any good meal should – with two fabulous desserts, chocolate, mousse à la vanille, sorbet cerise and autour de l’abricot et pistache , the former featuring a softly melting chocolate sponge and cherry sorbet, the latter a selection of apricot cake and sorbets, both being delicious.

We left contented, as did I think our fellow diners, as well as the lamp post-circling local. This is a great venue, serving charming food and boasting a fabulous wine list, with friendly service in whatever language you fancy (including American and Geordie). It all makes for a winning combination. Next I find myself in the Place Nouvelle Place , it won’t be that little bar at the top end I head to first.

Prices: The five-course set menu I enjoyed was a bargain €44, with a fish course instead of the second surprise starter it would have been €60. A tasting menu was €75, with wines €110, and there are a few à la carte options too. The wine list ranges from bargains up to the rarefied heights of Didier Dagueneau and the like; our 2012 Les Angelots cost €34. Total for dinner for two was €135.50. (8/10/16)

An Insider’s Guide to the Best Things to do in Sancerre

By: Author Sophie Nadeau

Perched high on a hill surrounded by swathes of vineyards, Sancerre is a delightful medieval town that is best associated with wine making. Easy to visit over the course of an afternoon (or a couple of days if you want to spend some time relaxing) , here’s your insider’s guide to the best things to do in Sancerre , as well as what to know before you go.

beautiful house in sancerre

Where is Sancerre?

What is sancerre known for, getting to sancerre, la maison des sancerre, taste the local wine, crottin de chavignol goat’s cheese, wander around the town, soak up the views, la nouvelle place, sancerre town hall, ruins of the castle, notre dame de sancerre, where to find the best view of sancerre, where to eat in sancerre, where to stay in sancerre, watch the sancerre travel guide.

Sancerre is located in the province of Berry in the department of Cher in the French Region of Centre-Val de Loire. Nestled within the Loire Valley, a central area which is closely associated with wondrous châteaux, the closest large town is Bourges , which is around a 45 minute drive away.

house in sancerre

Sancerre is most famous for its impressive position atop of a hill, the only such wine-producing town to bear this distinction (almost every other town and village in the surrounding countryside lies within a valley, alongside a riverbed). A maze of quintessentially French rooftops, much of the town is pedestrianised, meaning that it’s best explored on foot.

sancerre history panels

Unfortunately, Sancerre is not served by its own train station directly in the centre of the town. The closest stop to the town centre is at Tracy-Sancerre, which is around a one hour walk from the town. In order to truly discover the region at your own pace, you’ll want to rent a car. Check car rental comparison prices here.

Best things to do in Sancerre

If you want to learn more about the history of Sancerre and its surroundings (as well as its rich history in wine production), then you’ll certainly want to visit La Maison des Sancerre.

Once inside, you’ll find a pretty interactive museum (that is fun for all ages), including a 4D cinema (where you’ll join a bee as she flies over the vineyards) and plenty of other interactive exhibitions.

You can even opt to end your tour of the museum with a wine tasting on the terrace. There’s also a shop where you can purchase all sorts of wine-themed products, including bottle covers, tea towels, and baseball caps.

la maison des sancerre

Those who enjoy drinking wine should certainly not miss out on the chance to sample some local wine. Many wine producers have their own boutique in town where you can either turn up on the day (vendor dependant) or book a wine tasting in advance.

While you’re sampling the local produce, you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to try the local goat’s cheese, which is often said to pair perfectly with the wine. This cheese has been produced since the 16th-century, so you can be assured that the cheese producers have had time to perfect the recipe!

Truth be told, like many medieval towns in France, one of the best ways to get to know Sancerre is simply to stroll around and allow the town to reveal itself to you. Enjoy the little details of the pastel hued houses, go window shopping at the many estate agents in town, and soak up the ambiance of the sleepy town.

wander around sancerre

Of course, thanks to its breathtaking position overlooking the Loire Valley, one of the best things to do in Sancerre is to admire the view (so don’t forget to bring your camera along). The best views in town can be found at Esplanade Porte-Cesar, directly across the street from the tourist office.

sancerre vineyards

One of the more bustling and busy places in town is La Nouvelle Place, which is translated into English as the New Square. This is where all of the locals hang out in the evenings and is a pretty lively spot, with lots of bars, cafés, and restaurants spilling out onto the street.

sancerre market square

One of the principle buildings in town is the Sancerre Town Hall, which is known as the Hôtel de Ville in French. This administrative building is located next to the 1590 built l’hôtel de la Thaumassière, which is now home to a language school.

sancerre town hall

Like many hilltop villages in France, Sancerre had its very own château, around which the town developed from the 12th-century onwards. It’s thought that the name Sancerre might have developed from the term “Sacred to Caesar,” before it was later Christianised.

The most impressive piece of the castle to survive is the Tour des Fiefs. Unfortunately it is private property, closed to the public, and can only be admired from its exterior. Once upon a time, the tower could be visited, but this is now permanently closed.

sancerre castle ruins

While strolling around Sancerre, you’ll soon spy vestiges of the past around almost every corner. One of the most historical pieces to look out for is the former church of Saint-Pierre, which is also referred to as Saint-Père-la-None. The former church dates all the way back to the 5th-century, when a place of worship was established by the monks of Saint Satur.

old church sancerre

The most important church in Sancerre is Notre Dame de Sancerre, i.e. our Lady of Sancerre. Located next to the main museum on a particularly pretty stretch of road, the ecclesiastical building dates back to the 18th-century. Free to visit, should you wander inside you’ll find a quintessentially French church with ornate carvings and stained glass windows.

Thanks to its prominent position atop of a hill overlooking the surrounding region, there are a number of places where you can enjoy gorgeous views from Sancerre from afar. Here are some of the best places to view the town:

  • One of the most beautiful views in the surrounding area if you head to the village of Bue
  • You can see Sancerre from the Point de vue Amigny
  • One of the most popular places to view Sancerre is from the Belvédère sur Sancerre
  • From a windmill which is listed simply as ‘Moulin’ on Google Maps
  • The final place where you can enjoy views onto Sancerre is from Chemin de la Crele

Auberge Joseph Mellot: This is one of the oldest restaurants in town and serves up traditional French fare in a cosy setting. On the menu, you’ll find simple food, cooked well (including the chance to try the local goat’s cheese).

La Petite Maison: We personally dined at La Petite Maison and I was especially appreciative that there was a vegetarian option! You can get plates to share or opt for larger single dishes. Be sure to book in advance as space is limited and fills up fast.

sancerre restaurant

If you’re looking for a beautiful stay in Sancerre, coupled with access to an outdoor pool and a view of the endless sea of vineyards which surround the town, then you’ll want to check into the four-star Hôtel le Panoramic. We personally stayed here during our trip and loved looking out onto the vineyards each morning. Check prices and availability here.

You totally missed the fabulous French Language school Coeur de France, housed in a historic mansion just opposite the Town Hall, and the Michelin rated restaurant La Pomme d'Or across the street, and Michelin Guide restaurant La Tour Sancerre in the square, and the fabulous Pizza restaurant Sacripanti 10 Pl du Connétable; the Pastry shop across from the church, fabulous optical shop, and amazing toy shop Sancerre'Lipopette. Just to name a few, there are many more great shops and wineries. Also you could book a taxi from the train station, as you will not need a car in Sancerre, and parking in the town is limited. Last but not least leave your stilettos at home, it's very hilly with many cobblestone streets.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Ratings and reviews

Location and contact, michelin guide's point of view.

We came here for dinner, excited about the restaurant’s Michelin star and the promise of a delicious meal, and it definitely did not disappoint. We tried the 4-dish prix fixe menu, and every dish was elegant and refined, tastefully presented and helpfully (but not overbearingly... or condescendingly) explained. The atmosphere was classy, and the service was attentive (without being cloying). What a special experience! More

When we arrived (we always eat at the earliest reservation) we were given our choice of tables and we picked a round by the fireplace. What a cozy evening we had. Food was outstanding, service was impeccable and the wines my husband chose, with a... little help, were the best. It was hard to venture out in the cold night after such a warm reception from the staff and such delicious food and wine. It was a holiday meal to remember. More

Excellent staff whose presence enhances all the wonderfully innovative dishes. Each course offers a pleasing visual presentation which is further enhanced by the subtle flavors. Nothing is overwhelming -- we considered it a smooth journey through a variety of well considered flavors, all designed to... excite (and stimulate discussion of the various ingredients) the palate. The staff were very willing to pair wines to each course all of which enhanced the experience. This is a less formal service that doesn't shirk any of the attention that a great staff provides. Highly recommended - prepare yourself to be surprised! More

We came to La Tour after reading all the fabulous reviews online. The food was incredible, the stater and mains were fresh, well presented, well designed with huge depth of flavour. The desserts were less well put together, in particular the Apricot dessert being overpowered... by the basil Ice cream. The service really put a dampener on the lunch unfortunately. The service was inconsistent and confused. There was a clear lack of communication between the team. We ordered an aperitif, however the wine was poured despite still drinking the aperitif, so at the time we came round to trying the wine it was warm and unappetising. We were served amuse bouche and needed to ask for water and bread as well as a side plate for my husband. My plate was taken away from me whilst I was still eating. Following this the waitress brought cutlery for the main course, but we had to explain we hadn’t received the starter we had ordered. The main course arrived, but my husbands ordered was incorrect, the waiter took the dish back to the kitchen and returned with the correct one. We were asked whether we’d like dessert, to which we responded we would. Ten minutes passed without seeing a menu, then the waitress brought cutlery for the dessert, we had to explain that we hadn’t ordered our dessert yet. The waitress told us that someone had chosen the dessert for us already. We asked to see the menu and explained we’d like that one instead. The dessert arrived, but my husband again, received something that he hadn’t ordered. The kitchen rectified the problem quickly. However the waiting staff were unapologetic throughout. Compared to the timely and friendly service we have received at many restaurants of the same calibre across France recently, this service here really let our experience down unfortunately. Lovely food, shame about the dessert and the service. I would rate this very good on the food alone (save the dessert), but this option isn’t available on trip advisor unfortunately. More

This restaurant was so disappointing! We had a 5 course dinner with wine to compliment each course. Service First off, no cutlery that we had to ask for twice, Wine served too early before receiving our starter. To finish bread served to us that was... for the opposite table ( for celiac) Waiters dropping trays. No atmosphere and chaotic. Food First four courses bland. Dessert was really good and the cheese was nice. Wine Lovely Jules More

A truly exceptional meal. The staff were fantastic and the food was on another level. As a vegan I was catered for incredibly and my partner said his meal was the best he’s ever had. A must have experience if you are ever in Sancerre.... It’s not cheap but great value for what you get. More

Our lunch experience in this little and exquisite restaurant in Sancerre was amongst the best we have had in a while. Flawless from the warm greeting, all the way through to the calming surrounding, amazing cooking and caring service. We were delighted with our large... round table, and through generous table spacing, the full room is the testimony of its popularity. Congratulations to the chef and its team : Every dish was a celebration of taste and texture, from the gazpacho amuse-bouche to the chocolatine with the coffee. And of course the charming, professional and attentive service complemented with brio the experience. We’d go again without hesitation. More

We visited this restaurant for dinner. For dinner service the restaurant offers a “surprise” menu with a choice of meat or fish for the main meal. They did ask if we had any allergies or dislikes prior to serving us any meals. All of the... staff we encountered were really friendly and accommodating. My husband did the matched wines but I chose not to. The staff kindly matched wines to each course according to my taste. The dishes were plentiful, inventive with fresh local ingredients, and we found every dish delicious. We would highly recommend visiting this local gem of a restaurant. The food was superb but with a relaxed atmosphere. More

Unfortunately they were fully booked for dinner. Fortunately they had a couple of tables for lunch the next day. Absolutely fabulous meal, one of the best I’ve ever had. Amuse bouche then gazpacho followed by three courses and cheese. We also had the wine flight.... Just stunningly good food! Also incredibly well priced. I was expecting a hefty bill given all the extras and the quality of food and wine but lunch for two came to a total of 136 Euros! Worth every penny. Waiter indulged my poor French which is always appreciated and explained the wines. The chef came out and talked with us too. A fabulous meal which will be remembered for a long time. More

Ate here during recent holiday in France involving a range of restaurants and La Tour stands out as an excellent all-round experience. Service was attentive and helpful but never intrusive. Atmosphere was calm and relaxed and the quality of food and drink was excellent. Creative,... cooked beautifully and delicious, there was not a single dish that disappointed. Highly recommend. More

We unexpectedly landed in Sancerre looking for a restaurant, and saw la Tour by surprise, and what a surprise! We were put on the best table you can get in any restaurant, if they have one , the “chefs table “ from where we could... see the kitchen working like a clock to prepare the superb dishes. The Owner and Host Baptist is a true gentleman , and from the amuse, the two entrees of Tuna and also a delicate ravioli , oh and forgot the amazing gazpacho , cheeses and meat all was superb …. Not to mention the best Sancerre we ever had! WOW More

Every dish in the surprise menu was refined , with great combinations of ingredients, without being overly complex The beetroot ravioli, the tuna dish, the slowcooked veal ( 18 hours at 73 degrees), frome amuse bouche to desert with basilic icecream, a perfect symphony. Apparently... they lost their star for the service but certainly that too was made up: perfect attention and any extras one asked. A real treat. More

What a waste of over 135 Euros! Disappointing service. Food arrived long before the server came to tell us what it was. No set menu. We were asked only if we wanted 'fish' or 'meat'. No advanced explanations for the plates that were presented to... us. More

We recommend to book this restaurant if staying in Sancerre as you would not want to miss having dinner there. The menu on offer last night was a menu du surprise, and each course, each mouthful was amazing, such fantastic flavours, combinations of ingredients, that... each course surpassed the previous one. The chef certainly knows how to cook!!! The service was excellent, not pompous, but very friendly, and the tables are very well spaced apart. We will definitely return, and we would definitely book, (which you can do online) so as not to be disappointed More

We were really looking forward to one of the few Michelin bib gourmand rated restaurants. The food, the wine and the service were excellent. Compliment to the staf. And last but not least: due to the unavailability of taxis, the chef cook decided to bring... us to the hotel due to the poor weather conditions. What an commitment to their customers. Hats off More
