Multiple Grammy Award winning country artist Ronnie Milsap (born January 16th, 1943), has had an incredible 40 number one country hits in his long career, becoming one of the most successful country artists of his generation.

Born in the rural Appalachian town of Robbinsville, North Carolina, US, Milsap suffered from a congenital disorder that meant he has been blind since birth. However, this did little to hold Milsap back, who had a successful career in academia before deciding to leave his studies in order to pursue a career in music. He released his first single in 1964, “Total Disaster,” and went on to release his eponymous debut album on Warner Bros. in 1971.

Milsap has since gone on to forge a remarkable career, gathering endless hits, including the gut-wrenching ballad “Smoky Mountain Rain” (1981), “Any Day Now” (1982) and “There’s No Getting’ Over Me” (1981). Between the 1970s and 1980s, he was rarely out of the top ten of the US country charts, gaining his last number one hit in 1989, with “A Woman in Love.”

In the 90s, Milsap’s popularity began to wane, yet he continued to record and release albums frequently, still finding large audiences attending his live performances. Milsap has also diversified his style in later years, incorporating gospel, R&B and blues into his recordings, such as in his all-gospel affair, “Then Sings My Soul” in 2009.

Milsap has received an incredible array of awards throughout his career, including six Grammy Awards, eight Country Music Association Awards and was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2014. He has sold 35 million albums worldwide and is amongst the best selling country artists of all time.

Live reviews

I will be honest in my review for the show for Ronnie Milsap, and that is he didn't perform to the best of his abilities in last night show at all. I know he could have done better, if he wanted to, but for some reason didn't . I don't even remember what he opened the show with, because my mom and I were having an argument over the fact that I wanted to sing and dance in my seat, and my mom wouldn't let me do that much at least, because she said I was nothing but an embarrassment to her. I told her that she should go to a Mankato Symphony concert, which will be coming to Mankato to the Verizon Center tomorrow. She made me move down to the end of the aisle until some more people came, and then I was forced to sit with her. I then told her that she had to accept my having fun at the concert, she was quiet after that, thank goodness. I think the next one I go to . I will go to by myself, because I will then enjoy it better. As for the show itself, I would have to say , like I said Ronnie could have done better, because he did nothing to excite the crowd at all. He just sat at his piano like a bump on a log. He sang like he was sick. He had no energy at all, but what do you expect from a guy that is 75 years old, and is gaining weight, and been on the road for way too long. I think it is time that he gets off of the road, and spends time with his wife, Joyce.

American country singer, Ronnie Lee Milsap caught the attention of so many people. Part of the reason was because he was blind, but more importantly, it was because he crossed different genres, which was a little different when he first started making music. He was able to blend aspects of R&B with country and open up the appeal to “country music” to a wider range of people.

Front and center of the stage sitting at a beautiful piano, is Ronnie while behind and off to the sides his band takes the stage all at once. A guitarist, keyboardist, drummer, and bassist; however, it is just him and the piano that start off the show. As the song progresses, the band start to layer in their sounds, so that by the time Ronnie starts to sing, you have a full bodied sound, layered with so many different things. The complexity of his songs, and the visual of this complexity lend a special kind of experience. You never for a second pay attention to his blindness because you see the passion and emotion that drives him. You can see that the expression that he allows himself by sharing his music is all that he needs, and inspires you to no end.

Ronnie Milsap was undoubtedly one of the most popular country performers of the 70s and 80s having made the difficult crossover between country and pop with startling ease and staggering success. His influence and legacy is felt in the country scene in the modern day so therefore a demand remains to see the great man perform live.

There is a wide range of patrons gathered tonight as Milsap's music has the power to cross generations and is often passed down from parents. They cheer intently as Ronnie's band appears followed by the man himself. It must be a strange experience to have played so many times and hear the rapturous cheers from the crowd but to never see the scale of the venues Ronnie manages to fill. The blind performer endearingly informs the crowd he understands the magnitude of the show and thanks every audience member for attending tonight. The music is top quality, the performer is top class and the night gets top marks.

I was so honored and pleased to be at the Parker Playhouse on March 5th, 2015 to see Ronnie Milsap. He has been my all time favorite singer for over 30 years. I had hoped that one day I could actually see him live at a concert. I was so blessed when my daughter gave me tickets to see Ronnie Milsap. What an awesome concert!!!!!!!! Ronnie sang a lot of songs and I must say that honestly, his voice was just as beautiful as it was 30 years ago. If you have never seen him in person, you must go. That is one great singer who I wish would never retire. RONNIE MILSAP IS THE BEST!

He sung a couple of songs that we had never heard before and some that I hadn't heard in a real long time but we loved every minute of it!Can't wait to see him again at Renfro Valley Entertainment Center on Saturday, August 12!!!I do wish they would bring him back to the Paramount Center for the Arts in Bristol, TN again!

Bought these tickets for my dad for Christmas and Unfortunately, it was horrible and we left after 30 mins. At 74 Ronnie can not sing anymore. He almost sounds like he suffered a stoke at some point :-((

Kelly Clarkson Stuns and Keith Urban Surprises at Ronnie Milsap’s Final Concert

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

Ronnie Milsap played what is being billed as his final Nashville concert on Tuesday night at Music City’s Bridgestone Arena. But before he took the stage, a parade of artists from all genres paid him tribute: Keith Urban , Ricky Skaggs , Elizabeth Cook, Los Lonely Boys, and, at the top of the show, Kelly Clarkson .

The pop superstar kicked off the night with a powerhouse rendition of “It Was Almost Like a Song,” the Hal David and Archie Jordan-written title track to his 1977 album. Backed by the house band Sixwire, Clarkson slowly built the song to a dazzling big-note finish. It wasn’t the first time that Clarkson has performed songs from Milsap’s career either. As part of her regular Kellyoke segment on her talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show , the vocalist sang “Smoky Mountain Rain,” “Lost in the Fifties Tonight,” and “I Wouldn’t Have Missed It for the World” — three of Milsap’s finest.

In 2014, Urban talked to Rolling Stone about the influence of more pop-influenced country music on his own sound. “I grew up playing contemporary country music, not traditional: Ronnie Milsap, Alabama’s songs, Glen Campbell,” he said. “And then the West Coast rock thing was a big influence: Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt.”

Milsap’s final Nashville show marks the end of a career that was unafraid to lean hard into pop music. In fact, some of Milsap’s biggest hits crossed over to the adult contemporary chart. “I didn’t just come into town and start having hit records. You’ve got to study the songs and see if it’s a song that you really want to do,” Milsap told Rolling Stone . “And I guess some of them crossed over. Sometimes that just happens.”

Earlier this summer, Country Music Hall of Fame member Ronnie Milsap revealed his final Nashville concert, a special tribute event taking place October 3 at Bridgestone Arena . "I love Nashville and the amazing career my fans have given me. 'I wouldn't have missed it for the world!' Please join me. It will be a very special night.”    Previously-announced performers include  Kelly Clarkson , Little Big Town , Justin Moore , Scotty McCreery , Tracy Lawrence , Randy Houser , Sara Evans , Lorrie Morgan , Neal McCoy , BRELAND , Phil Vassar , Terri Clark, The Band of Heathens and  Charlie McCoy . Sixwire will serve as the house band. The evening will honor Milsap and his 50-plus year career, his celebrated catalog and his lasting influence on country music. Ticket holders can expect several special surprise guest performances.   Tickets are on-sale now via t icketmaster.com .  The event is promoted and produced by Outback Presents and Conway Entertainment Group.   About Ronnie Milsap Country Music Hall of Famer. Forty #1s. Five decades of charted singles. Creating a new way of recording (being blind his hyper-attuned hearing led him to create/build what is now known as Ronnie’s Place), he broke genre rules and became one of the biggest pop/AC and even R&B artists of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.  Six Grammys. CMA Entertainer of the Year and four Album of the Year Awards. The first country video played on MTV (the ironic “She Loves My Car”). An early champion of NFL star Mike Reid, who wrote many of Ronnie’s #1 hits and who’d go on to write Bonnie Raitt’s second most enduring classic, “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”  Always chasing the music, always hungry for the songs, he is now an inspiration for a new generation of country stars from critical standard setters Kacey Musgraves and Little Big Town to CMA/ACM Entertainers of the Year Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean, as well as a standard-setter for friends like Dolly Parton, George Strait, Willie Nelson, Steven Curtis Chapman and even groundbreakers Leon Russell and Billy Gibbons.   For more information, visit ronniemilsap.com .

Taylor Swift, Ronnie Milsap on the Road With George Strait

ronnie milsap concert tour

Taylor Swift is still getting comfortable with the concept that George Strait and Ronnie Milsap know who she is and are familiar with her music. In fact, a defining moment came earlier this month when she and Milsap first met when they hit the road during Strait's national tour.

Recalling her initial encounter with Milsap, the newcomer told CMT Insider , "He said to me, 'I love your album, girl,' and I said, 'You listened to my album?! You're Ronnie Milsap!' He's so great. He's one of the coolest famous people I've ever met."

With her self-titled debut album just going gold and her first single, "Tim McGraw," still in the Top 10, Swift is also getting used to the reality that she's opening arena shows for Strait and Milsap, two of the biggest hitmakers in country music history.

"I was born in 1989, so I've never known a world without George Strait," Swift said. "I've just loved his music since the day I was born. Watching his show, it's hit after hit after hit, and I know the words to every single song. It's just unbelievable that that I'm on tour with him. I'm so excited.

"Touring with George Strait is so cool because he's a living legend. About a month ago, I was at the CMA Awards and saw him get inducted into the Hall of Fame. And about a week later, I found out I was going to be out on tour with him for his entire tour. It's a dream come true."

Swift got her first taste of being on a major tour in late 2006 when she opened a series of shows for Rascal Flatts.

"That went so great," she said. "It was a perfect audience match, and I was wondering how the transition would be with the George Strait tour. ... It's so amazing -- seeing that the audience really does stay the same."

Milsap has high praise for Swift's talents.

"I think she's incredible," Milsap told CMT Insider . "She is wonderful -- and to have that opportunity at this point in her life. ... I understand she was involved with the writing of every song on her CD, and that's just great. They say she owns the stage, so she's got the confidence. She's a star already."

As for Strait, Milsap explains, "We've been fans of each other's for years. He's a sweet guy. ... And this is the most fun I've had. The audiences are so enthusiastic. They're so great. ... George has his huge fan base, and I've got people coming to see me for years. I think our shows are similar but different enough."

Milsap's portion of the show is a mix of his past hits and new songs from his recent album, My Life . He openly acknowledges that he's hoping the live performances at the sold-out shows will help convince country radio programmers to play his records.

"There's all kinds of alternative ways of selling music," Milsap said. "There's nothing, still, that compares to country radio airplay. There's nothing that absolutely sells records better. ... Airplay still is the way. ... I was looking for the visibility of being on this show with George because I have a new CD out on RCA, and I want to try to help it as much as I can. ... So we get to talk about it and play a couple of songs from that during my show."

As much as Milsap enjoys the process of recording an album, he still finds his greatest musical thrills onstage.

"My band has been with me for 20 years, and we just enjoy playing together," he said. "It's all about teamwork. The audience is what drives all this. ... There are times they will make you do something better than you ever dreamed you would. And it's just a split second in time -- and they bring out the best in you, I think."

Strait's tour with Milsap and Swift continues Thursday (Jan. 25) in Portland, Ore., followed by shows Friday in Boise, Idaho, and Saturday in Tacoma, Wash. Concert dates are scheduled through March 10.

Editor's note: CMT Insider 's Laura Douglas conducted the interviews used in this report.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
