Introduction.

Are you ready to embrace your wild side? Jungle-themed tattoos are all the rage among tattoo enthusiasts, and for good reason. With their exotic appeal and versatile designs, jungle theme tattoos allow you to roam free with nature-inspired imagery that captures the spirit of adventure and the beauty of the wild. In this article, we'll explore the world of jungle-themed tattoos, from their symbolic meanings to popular designs, and provide inspiration for both men and women looking to express their uniqueness through a wild display of body art.

Exploring Jungle Theme Tattoos

A. what are jungle theme tattoos.

Jungle theme tattoos are body art designs that feature elements inspired by the lush landscapes of the jungle. These tattoos often incorporate exotic jungle animals such as lions, tigers, elephants, and monkeys, as well as vibrant foliage and tropical flowers. The possibilities are endless when it comes to creating a jungle-themed tattoo, whether you prefer a realistic depiction or a more abstract interpretation.

B. Symbolism and Meaning

Jungle motifs carry multiple symbolic meanings that resonate with tattoo enthusiasts. The jungle represents strength, resilience, and the spirit of adventure. By donning a jungle-themed tattoo, you can depict your connection with nature and your willingness to tackle challenges head-on. It's a way to showcase your untamed spirit and love for the wild.

C. Popular Jungle Animals in Tattoos

When it comes to jungle-themed tattoos, certain animals are more commonly represented. Lions embody courage and leadership, while tigers symbolize power and strength. Elephants signify wisdom and intelligence, while monkeys represent playfulness and curiosity. These animals can be depicted in various styles, from realistic portraits to stylized interpretations, giving you plenty of options to choose from.

D. Choosing the Perfect Design

Choosing a jungle-themed tattoo design that resonates with your personality and style is crucial. Consider whether you prefer a larger, more intricate design or a smaller, minimalist piece. Think about the colors you'd like to incorporate, whether you'd prefer a realistic or abstract representation, and if there are any specific elements or animals that hold personal significance for you. Consulting with a professional tattoo artist can help you finalize your design.

Showcasing Women's Safari Tattoos

A. feminine jungle tattoo designs.

Women often opt for jungle tattoo designs that embrace delicate and feminine elements. Floral jungle motifs, such as orchids or hibiscus flowers intertwined with vines and leaves, add an elegant touch to the overall design. Delicate outlines of jungle animals, like a graceful leopard or a wise owl, can also create a stunning feminine look.

B. Expressing Empowerment and Freedom

Safari-themed tattoos can be a powerful way for women to express their strength, resilience, and love for adventure. By choosing a jungle-themed tattoo, women can showcase their inner power and their connection with the untamed world. It's a reminder that they can conquer any challenge and roam freely through life.

C. Placement Ideas for Women

The placement of your safari tattoo can significantly impact its visual impact. Popular body areas for women's safari tattoos include the wrist, ankle, upper back, and shoulder blade. Consider the size and intricacy of the design when choosing the placement, as well as personal preference and visibility.

Adventurous Jungle Tattoos for Everyone

A. unisex jungle tattoo designs.

Jungle-themed tattoos can be embraced by both men and women. For a unisex design, consider bold and detailed representations of jungle animals or lush foliage. Intricate linework and shading can add depth and dimension to the overall design.

B. Embracing Nature and the Wild

Jungle-themed tattoos allow individuals to express their love for the outdoors, wildlife, and adventurous spirit. Whether you're a man or a woman, a jungle theme tattoo serves as a reminder of your connection to nature and your desire to explore the untamed world around you.

C. Back Tattoos for a Statement

The back is a popular canvas for jungle-themed tattoos. The large surface area allows for more intricate and detailed designs that make a bold statement. Consider a full back tattoo featuring a lush jungle scene or a combination of multiple jungle animals to create a visually striking masterpiece.

Getting Inked: The Tattooing Process

A. finding a professional tattoo artist.

When getting a jungle-themed tattoo, it's crucial to find a professional tattoo artist experienced in creating detailed and vibrant designs. Look for portfolios of their previous work and read reviews from their clients to ensure you choose an artist who can bring your vision to life.

B. Consultation and Customization

Once you've found a tattoo artist, schedule a consultation to discuss your ideas, preferences, and size/placement options. A skilled artist will help you refine your design and provide valuable input based on their expertise. Remember, customization is key to ensuring your jungle-themed tattoo reflects your unique personality.

C. Aftercare Tips

Proper aftercare is essential for the healing and longevity of your jungle-themed tattoo. Follow the guidance provided by your tattoo artist, which typically includes keeping the tattoo clean, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and moisturizing the area regularly with a tattoo-specific ointment. This will help ensure that your tattoo heals properly and maintains its vibrancy over time.

Jungle-themed tattoos offer a unique way to express your love for adventure, nature, and the wild. Whether you choose a design that combines popular jungle animals or lush foliage, or opt for a more abstract representation, a jungle-themed tattoo allows you to embrace your wild side and showcase your untamed spirit. So, why not consider getting a jungle-themed tattoo and embark on an exciting journey that lasts a lifetime?

Women's Animal Tattoo

Animal tattoos are the cutest examples of body art.

These tattoos are in vogue all across the world, despite the differences in culture, preferences, or traditions. Humans just love decorating their bodies with little images of their favorite animals.

Images of animals are almost always linked to spirituality. Animalism or the worship of animals as spiritual beings is an important part of human history. Humans have associated these creatures with the signs of luck, health, natural phenomena, and supernatural happenings. Many cultures celebrate and worship animals to this date. It is not unusual since many animals, especially wild animals, were alien creatures to humans back when it was impossible to understand their nature and behaviors. But it was not rare to see ancient people taming some animals and making them do chores. Getting tattoos of animals was more like protection against something unnatural or illogical than just for the sake of love. But then history was changing and evolving, and with it, humans started acquiring the skill to better understand animals and love them more dearly. Now animal tattoos are more like pieces of body art to express our admiration of these creatures than just some religious or superstitious markings. What does a giraffe tattoo mean?

A giraffe tattoo typically symbolizes patience, grace, intelligence and protection. It can also be a representation of your journey in life, as the long neck is seen as a metaphor for looking ahead towards the future. In some cultures, the giraffe is also thought to bring luck or bring good fortune to those who wear it. The imagery of a giraffe can also represent strength and resilience, as it is one of the tallest animals in the world. However, ultimately the meaning behind a giraffe tattoo will depend on what the individual wearer wants to express with their ink.

What are the different styles of giraffe tattoos?

Giraffe tattoos can come in a variety of different styles. Examples include traditional, neo-traditional, blackwork, watercolor, and minimalist designs. Traditional giraffe tattoos usually feature the animal in full color with realistic detailing to bring out its features. Neo-traditional designs often have a bolder style that focuses on bright colors and thick lines. Blackwork designs usually feature the giraffe in black or grey ink, while watercolor tattoos involve splashes and drips of color to give it a soft but vibrant aesthetic. Minimalist designs are popular for their simplicity, often using abstract lines to create the silhouette of a giraffe. Ultimately, the style chosen will depend on what look the individual wearer wants to achieve.

How can I design my own giraffe tattoo?

Designing your own giraffe tattoo can be a fun and creative process. First, decide what message you want to convey with the tattoo, as this will help guide your design decisions. You can also pick from a variety of different styles such as traditional, neo-traditional, blackwork, watercolor, or minimalist designs. Once you have decided on the style, you can start sketching out a design. Many tattoo artists offer custom designs, so you may want to consult with one to get feedback on your ideas or help you refine the final look of your giraffe tattoo. Finally, pick a location that best suits your design and lifestyle – this will ensure that the tattoo looks its best and fits in with your daily routines.

How much does a giraffe tattoo cost?

The cost of a giraffe tattoo will depend on the size, style, complexity, and location of the ink. Generally speaking, most small tattoos can range from $50 to $200 dollars while larger ones start at around $300 or more. It’s important to keep in mind that some tattoo artists may charge by the hour instead of per piece, so be sure to ask about their pricing policies before getting your tattoo. Additionally, the price of a giraffe tattoo may be higher if you opt for more intricate designs or specialized inks such as glow-in-the-dark or metallic shades.

African Tattoos: Tattooing Tradition, Designs, and Meanings

safari tattoos for females

Known as the ‘cradle of humankind’, the African continent has kept the world fascinated for hundreds of years. The wildlife, the tradition, the interesting and unique approach to life and the neverending bond with nature and animals is what makes the continent so unique and so close to our origins and what we are as humans.

Unfortunately, the African continent is also the one constantly facing poverty and exploitation, which has been a huge setback for almost every African country for decades. It is truly bothering that so many people are fascinated by African countries and their cultures, but do so little to help them out and ensure they continue blooming.

But, we’re not here today to talk about these unfortunate topics. We’re here to celebrate the fact that Africa is the origin of tattoos. To do that, we’re going to explore everything we know about African tattoos, the tattoo traditions, the meanings of the designs, and much more. This is our way of showing appreciation to this ancestral form of body art, and hopefully, inspire some of you out there to continue this exploration on your own. So, without further ado, let’s get started!

The Origin Of African Tattoos

The first african tattoo.

It is believed that the oldest evidence of purposeful and symbolic tattooing in humans originates in ancient Egypt. Upon the  discovery of several tattooed mummies , scientists have established that 5000 years ago, African people have utilized body art and tattoos to either express their social status or adorn their bodies.

It is also believed that tattoos were considered a cure for illnesses or as a form of protection against evil spirits. Tattoos were also used to showcase one’s belonging to a certain tribe and one’s loyalty to that community.

Because the discovered mummies of Deir el-Medina were believed to be female, scientists have also concluded that these tattooed women were key religious practitioners in their communities. Their tattoos were also those of healing and protection.

The Spread of Tattooing in Historic Africa

The Spread of Tattooing in Historic Africa

It is well known that Northern African people were the ones more embracing tattooing as a part of their religious and ritual practices than the Southern Africans, or the sub-Saharan people and regions. The Nothern tribes and, what we know nowadays as individual countries, used tattoos to show their identity, their belonging to a specific tribe or community, or self-expression.

Interestingly, upper-class African women were to ones who also spread the tattooing practice across ancient Egypt and Northern Africa . This is because it was believed that tattoos, or permanent body markings, symbolized the woman’s fertility, status, and worship.

With the arrival of monotheistic religions, specifically Islam, to the Northern African countries, the practice of tattooing among African people diminished. This is because in Islam, tattooing is considered to be a sin and a form of self-mutilation. As a God-given being, it is believed that by getting tattooed, you’re ruining something God created. Therefore, the practice of tattoos was abolished.

However, the tradition of tattooing remains among non-Islamic tribes, who have spread it across future generations. Nowadays, traditional African tattooing is present and serves as an inspiration for people around the world.

The Spread of Scarification in Sub-Saharan Historic Africa

As we mentioned, tattooing in Africa started as an ancient Egyptian practice, that spread quickly among Northern Africa. However, people of Central and Southern Africa had a different practice of self-expression; scarification .

Instead of using the ancient form of ink, these people would carve symbols and patterns into the skin, thereby forming permanent scars. Just like tattoos, these scars were believed to be a form of protection from evil spirits or a cure for illness.

Scarification was generally spread among ancient African women, especially younger girls. The scars were believed to be a sign of beauty, but also a sign of womanhood (symbolizing puberty, fertility, menstrual cycle, and childbirth).

Nowadays, scarification is a popular practice in African countries. It is believed to be a practice of strength and courage or is used to mark a significant moment in one’s life.

African Tattoos – Designs and Meanings

To fully understand the origin and tradition of African tattoos, we have to take a look at some popular symbols used in African tattoo designs.

Adinkra Tattoo Symbols

Adinkra tattoo symbols are believed to be a creation of Gyaaman tribes who used to live in West Africa, or the present-day Cîte d’Ivoire region. These tattoo symbols were only used by the key religious and spiritual leaders, as well as people who belonged to the royalty. The Adinkra tattoo symbols are numerous, and each has a specific meaning. Here are some of them;

  • Dwennimmen Adinkra Symbol – symbolizing strength and humility, the Dwennimmen symbol is based on the design of two rams crossing or butting horns against each other. The image is designed to have the bird’s eye view, from above. This symbol usually referred to the need to stay humble and close to the ground even when in possession of great power or status.

Dwennimmen Adinkra Symbol

  • Sankofa Adinkra Symbol – originating in West Africa as well, the Sankofa symbol represents a bird with an egg in her mouth, turning backward. Final Thoughts

We hope this article was insightful when it comes to African tattooing history, culture, and tradition. We tried to stay as informative and as concise as possible. However, we do have to emphasize that by getting African tattoos without actually having an African origin or ancestry, you might be committing cultural appropriation.

Surely enough, African people aren’t offended by that, but just to remain respectful to these peoples’ countries, traditions, origins, and cultures, one should avoid getting an Afrocentric tattoo if one has no connection or origin history.

Table of Contents

Tattooing has become an increasingly popular way of self-expression, and for women, it provides a unique opportunity to celebrate their individuality and express their inner strength . However, in the past, girls have not often embraced this art form due to the stereotypes and limitations that were put in front of them.

We will reveal how the sense of identity and self-expression through tattooing has become the basis for expanding horizons and developing women’s rights. And the selected best unique designs for women will not only be a source of inspiration but will also help to create your own tattoo.

Let’s make your tattoo a story you tell the world without words!

The Evolution of Women’s Tattoo History

Tattoo ideas for women

Women’s tattoos have a long and interesting history that has evolved from prohibition to real tattoo art. Throughout history, women have often been assigned different statuses and roles depending on their position in society.

For example, in Ancient Egypt, tattoos on women’s bodies indicated their origin and social status . In some cultures, such as Celtic and Indian, tattoos were considered symbols of female power, fertility, or rank in society.

The prohibition of female tattooing was widespread in Japanese culture, where tattoos were associated with women of easy virtue and mafia groups. While in China, tattoos signified a low status and were seen as a violation of social norms and a lifelong stigma.

Throughout time, women’s tattoos and their meanings have changed, reflecting the fashion, cultural, and social trends of each time. In the 20th century, women increasingly began to use tattoos as a means of self-expression and demonstration of independence.

Today, in modern society, female tattoos have become widespread and diverse. Cool women’s tattoos include a variety of styles, from minimalist to bright and detailed designs. Women choose a tattoo that suits their preferences and symbolizes their values, role in society, and personal stories.

A woman said her tattoos got her rejected for a job, but experts say personality is far more important

  • A tattooed content creator sparked a debate about hiring biases after being rejected by T.J. Maxx.
  • Experts said tattoos could influence hiring decisions, especially in customer-facing roles.
  • But overall, personality and cultural fit are more important, they said.

Insider Today

A TikToker, Ash Putnam, was frustrated after T.J. Maxx denied her application — and she said she thought her tattoos were to blame.

Some of her designs that are visible when she's dressed are a skull with horns on her neck, solid black patches on her arms, and a pattern on her forehead. Putnam, 23, also has multiple facial piercings , including a large silver ring hanging from her septum.

"I hate that my tattoos are such a defining factor for me getting a job or not," she said in a recent TikTok. "Just because I have tattoos doesn't mean I'm not going to be a good worker."

Putnam, from California, said she went into the store to ask why she hadn't gotten the job and that the hiring manager told her she didn't have enough experience. The hiring manager also denied that her tattoos played any role in the rejection, she said. T.J. Maxx did not respond to a request for comment.

She wasn't convinced and took to TikTok to complain. Many commentators claimed her attitude may have been to blame, rather than her tattoos. Others said they thought her body art likely played a role in the rejection.

While the jury is out over whether tattoos can damage your prospects of being hired, experts told BI that the personality of a candidate was likely more important for recruiters.

Putnam's story went viral

Putnam's video amassed 7.4 million views, and it struck a nerve.

"HR supervisor here," one person commented. "There is no way any company would put you in front of customers like T.J. Maxx."

Another commenter, who said they used to be a hiring manager for the store, said: "I will tell you it's the facial piercings and tattoos."

Some fellow content creators criticized Putnam's approach.

Ivy Johnson, for example, who also has many tattoos, said she worked in corporate America as a hiring manager before starting her apothecary business.

"Your tattoos are very aggressive," she said. With customer-facing positions, she said, "that doesn't always go over well."

Johnson said she also thought Putnam had "a really bad attitude."

"If you had come into my business after an interview, or even applying and chatting on the phone, even if I didn't even know that you're a heavily tattooed person, I'd be like, 'Yo, bye, there's the door,'" she said.

"You have to put your best foot forward in an interviewing circumstance, no matter what you do, what you're applying for, or what you look like," she added.

It depends on the role

Almost one-third (32%) of people in the US have a tattoo, and 22% have more than one, according to Pew Research Center.

Some studies have suggested that tattoos can affect someone's career progression. In a 2018 LinkedIn survey, 40% of respondents said they had rejected a candidate for a job because they had a visible tattoo. Eighty-eight percent of recruiters and human-resources professionals who responded said they thought tattoos limited a candidate's prospects.

However, research from the University of Miami that same year found tattooed job seekers were no less likely to be employed than those without.

The stigma of tattoos is lessening every day, with many employers no longer having an issue with hiring tattooed employees, according to Indeed .

There may still be a line, though, and some of Putnam's viewers argued that she crossed it. Putnam didn't comment on this article, but she told the UK publication The Daily Star : "I am not going to change who I am for minimum-wage jobs."

Adam Collins, the founder and CEO of Ignite SEO, told BI that as someone who hired people to work at his company, he thought "tattoos can make a big impact on how a candidate is perceived."

"I wouldn't say that tattoos make or break an interview because it depends on the role," he said. "A candidate applying to be an account manager for our clients and is supposed to speak to our clients directly should definitely appear trustworthy and clean-cut, so face and neck tattoos would affect that."

On the other hand, with someone who isn't directly working with clients, appearance is less important.

In technical and operational roles, for example, "it's not a big deal," he said.

Michelle Enjoli, a career coach, told BI the visibility and type of tattoos someone has could make a difference.

"Tattoos are personal and typically represent something for that person," she said. "People represent companies, and therefore if a tattoo represents something that a company would not want to be associated with, it can definitely be an issue for a hiring manager."

How likely it is that a tattoo will determine the course of an interview depends on how visible they are and what they may represent, Enjoli added. Tattoos are nowhere near as much of a taboo as they used to be, but some people still hold judgment over them.

In Putnam's case, her tattoos were considered extreme, Enjoli said, and "seemed to be a big part of her identity."

"In other cases, where someone might have a smaller tattoo on their arm or visible area, it might not matter as much as it is less obvious," she said.

"I think a company demanding that an employee not have any tattoos regardless of visibility or meaning is definitely outdated as they have become a big part of the modern culture."

Personality matters more

Justina Raskauskiene, the HR team lead at Omnisend, told BI as tattoos had become more common, it's likely recruiters and hiring managers barely paid attention to them "unless they are offensive or distracting."

"Sometimes hiring managers may even prefer an employee with a tattoo because it can be evidence of an interesting personality," she said.

"Discriminating against those people would mean missing out on some talented people in the industry."

Rachel Pelta, the head writer at the virtual-work-experience platform Forage, told BI that overall, hiring managers were looking at skills and abilities.

"The thing is, everyone who's interviewing probably has the skills and abilities I'm looking for," she said. "So then it comes down to, how well are you selling yourself in the interview? Are you making the case for why you're the best person for the role? If you're not doing that, you won't get the job."

As for tattoos, piercings, or anything else that could be considered unusual, such as bright hair colors, hiring managers "shouldn't evaluate a candidate on their appearance," Pelta added.

But some companies are traditional or conservative, and for them, these things could be a "big deal."

"Unless you're willing to cover or remove them, you'll have to keep searching until you find a company that accepts you as you," she said. "And they are out there. It just may take you a bit longer to find one."

Live updates, with harvey weinstein’s sex conviction overturned, what’s next for embattled mogul.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Now that his New York sex crime convictions have been overturned, disgraced former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein will go through hearings on bail and learn if he will be extradited to California, where he was found guilty of other sexual offenses, according to a legal expert.

Michael Bachner, a former prosecutor in the Manhattan’s DA Office, told The Post that Weinstein will likely seek bail following the court’s decision in order to walk out of the Mohawk Correctional Facility, where he has been held following his 2020 trial.

“Procedurally his lawyers are going to make a request, to either the trial court or appellate court, for bail on the grounds that his conviction has been reversed,” Bachner said.

Harvey Weinstein saw his criminal conviction in New York overturned on Thursday.

Weinstein, 72, has been serving a 23-year sentence in New York following his conviction on charges of criminal sex act for forcibly performing oral sex on former “Project Runway” production assistant Miriam “Mimi” Haleyi in 2006 and raping hairstylist Jessica Mann in 2013.

Weinstein’s legal team said he will be transported back to the Manhattan courtroom from the upstate  prison, with the embattled former producer likely to be placed at Rikers Island or Bellevue Hospital.

“It’s like his case begins brand new, like those days almost six years ago, when he was initially arrested and brought in. We start from scratch,” defense attorney Arthur Aidala told reporters during a news conference Thursday.

The former Hollywood producer, however, may also undergo a separate hearing to be moved to Los Angeles pending his retrial in New York, Bachner added.

Weinstein’s reps told The Post Thursday that he was “emotional” and “happy” and they were still working out his future steps.

“The next steps are we have to find out what the deal is with Los Angeles – how soon they are going to call for extradition,” said spokesperson Juda Engelmayer.

“We want to get him relocated to a medical facility here in New York City closer to his family and home and the lawyers are going to be filing an appeal in LA. We expect he’ll have to go out to LA to serve some time there.”

Englemayer said it would likely take a week to get Weinstein out of the prison, with LA defense attorney Jennifer Bonjean now feeling positive about the appeal in the California rape case.

Weinstein was sentenced in February 2023 to 16 years in prison in a separate Los Angeles criminal case for raping an Italian model Evgeniya Chernyshova at a film festival in 2013. The sentence was meant to be served concurrently with his New York conviction.

“That jury was under the assumption that Mr. Weinstein had been fairly convicted in New York, and that didn’t turn out to be true,” Bonjean told The Post. “So I’m very optimistic about the California case.”

Harvey Weinstein's sex crime conviction overturned: Key facts

  • Harvey Weinstein’s  New York rape conviction  was overturned in a 4-3 ruling by New York state’s highest court.
  • The New York State Court of Appeals found that Manhattan Judge James Burke “erroneously” allowed testimony from three women whose allegations weren’t connected to the case.
  • The 72-year-old has been serving a 23-year sentence in a New York prison following his conviction on charges of criminal sex act for forcibly performing oral sex and raping two women.
  • Weinstein will remain behind bars because of a February 2023 conviction, sentencing him to 16 years in prison for raping an Italian model in 2013.

Bachner said the ball was in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office on whether to retry Weinstein and whether they’ll seek to keep him in New York.

A spokesperson for DA Alvin Bragg’s office told The Post it will seek a retrial for Weinstein.

“We will do everything in our power to retry this case, and remain steadfast in our commitment to survivors of sexual assault,” the spokesperson said.

Harvey Weinstein seated in court with his attorney Benjamin Brafman, discussing with a court officer, New York, June 5, 2018.

The DA’s Office did not give a timeline on how the Weinstein case will proceed, nor did it comment on whether it will seek to extradite him to Los Angeles.

Bachner said the decision could be made in the coming days, but could ultimately take weeks to coordinate.

The new trial itself will likely take months, Bachner added, as the DA’s Office is currently in the middle of former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial.

Japan Zoo Discovers Male Resident Hippo Is A Female After 7 Years

The zoo decided to have a third-party organization test its DNA.

A zoo in Japan recently learned that their male resident hippo is a female. Japan's Osaka Tennoji Zoo took in a hippo named Gen-chan seven years ago. However, a DNA test found out that the animal is actually a female, as per a report in CBS News .

They revealed the news on their website and said that the hippo was taken from Mexico's African Safari in 2017 at age 5. "The animal was only 5 years old at the time and was still a child. We had no doubts," a translation of the zoo's post said.

"When introducing the animal, the person in charge of the zoo where it was kept explained that it was a 'male' and the documents required for import also indicated that it was a 'male,' and the animal was only 5 years old at the time, so it was still a child. We had no doubts," the Japan zoo wrote.

Regarding the animal's sex, they added that Gen-chan never showed "male-specific behaviours". Zookeepers told AFP that Gen-chan did not have the most common habit of male hippos, which is to whip their tails in a propeller-like motion while defecating to mark their territory. Caretakers were unable to locate any male genitalia, and the hippo failed to make courtship calls to females.

Since Gen-chan's reproductive organs cannot be "visually confirmed," the zoo decided to have a third-party organization test its DNA. "However, based on this result, we recognize the importance of reconfirming the sex of introduced animals and will take precautions to ensure that this does not happen again. We will continue to strive to provide a comfortable environment for Gen-chan, so we hope that you will continue to come and see Gen-chan," the zoo added.

32% of Americans have a tattoo, including 22% who have more than one

Tattoos have become a more common sight in workplaces around the United States, even making appearances among members of the U.S. House and Senate . Amid this shift, a large majority of U.S. adults say society has become more accepting of people with tattoos in recent decades, according to a new Pew Research Center survey. And 32% of adults have a tattoo themselves, including 22% who have more than one.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to find out what percentage of Americans have a tattoo and to understand attitudes toward tattoos among those who have them and those who don’t.

For this analysis, the Center surveyed 8,480 adults from July 10 to July 16, 2023. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories.  Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

“Middle income” is defined here as two-thirds to double the median annual family income for panelists on the American Trends Panel. “Lower income” is below that range; “upper income” is above it. See the survey  methodology  for more details.

Here are the  questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and the survey  methodology .

Here’s a closer look at Americans and tattoos, based on the new survey:

Which Americans are most likely to have a tattoo?

The likelihood of having a tattoo varies by several demographic factors.

A bar chart showing that women, Black Americans and younger adults are among the most likely to have tattoos.

  • Gender: 38% of women have at least one tattoo, compared with 27% of men. This includes 56% of women ages 18 to 29 and 53% of women ages 30 to 49.
  • Race and ethnicity: 39% of Black Americans have a tattoo, compared with 35% of Hispanic, 32% of White and 14% of Asian Americans.
  • Age:  Adults under 50 are especially likely to have a tattoo. Some 41% of those under 30 have at least one, as do 46% of those ages 30 to 49. This compares with a quarter of adults ages 50 to 64 and 13% of those 65 and older.
  • Education: 37% of those with some college or less education have a tattoo, compared with 24% of those with a bachelor’s degree and 21% of those with a postgraduate degree.
  • Income: 43% of lower-income adults have a tattoo, compared with 31% of those in middle-income households and 21% of those in upper-income households.
  • Religion: 41% of religiously unaffiliated adults have at least one tattoo, compared with 29% of those who are affiliated with a religion.
  • Sexual orientation: Around half of lesbian, gay or bisexual Americans (51%) have at least one tattoo. The share is especially high among women in this group: 68% are tattooed, including 55% who have more than one tattoo. By comparison, 31% of straight Americans have at least one tattoo.

There are no major differences by political party or whether Americans live in an urban, suburban or rural community. A third of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents have a tattoo, as do 32% of Republicans and Republican leaners. And roughly a third of adults across urban, suburban and rural areas report having a tattoo. There are no differences between veterans and non-veterans, either.

In a 2010 Center survey conducted by phone, 23% of adults said they had a tattoo. But due to changes in survey mode and question wording, the 2010 results are not directly comparable to the results of the new survey.

What are the most common reasons for getting a tattoo?

The new survey also asked tattooed Americans why they have a tattoo.

A bar chart that shows most Americans with tattoos have one to remember or honor someone or something

The most commonly cited reason is to honor or remember someone or something: 69% of tattooed adults say this is either a major or minor reason they got any of their tattoos. Just under half (47%) say they got a tattoo to make a statement about what they believe, and 32% say they got at least one to improve their personal appearance.

Here, too, there are some demographic differences. For example, women are 10 percentage points more likely than men to say remembering or honoring someone or something is a reason they have a tattoo (73% vs. 63%).

Some 56% of Black adults say making a statement about what they believe is a reason for their tattoo, compared with 46% of Hispanic adults and 44% of White adults. And 42% of Black adults say improving their personal appearance is a reason, while roughly three-in-ten Hispanic and White adults say the same. (The sample size for tattooed Asian Americans is too small to analyze separately.)

Some tattooed Americans have regrets

A bar chart showing that 24% of tattooed Americans say they regret any of their tattoos.

Most tattooed Americans do not regret getting a tattoo. But about a quarter (24%) say they ever regret getting one or more of their tattoos.

Three-in-ten tattooed Hispanic adults report regretting any of their tattoos, compared with 23% of White adults and 21% of Black adults. (The sample size for tattooed Asian Americans is too small to analyze separately.)

A quarter of tattooed adults with some college or less education say they ever regret any of their tattoos. This compares with 19% of those who have a bachelor’s degree or more education.

Which untattooed Americans are most likely to get a tattoo in the future?

The vast majority (85%) of Americans who don’t have a tattoo say they are not too or not at all likely to get one in the future. Another 9% say they are somewhat likely to get one, while 6% say they are extremely or very likely to do so.

A bar chart showing that about 2 in 10 adults under 30 who don't have a tattoo are likely to get one in the future.

Among untattooed Americans, younger adults are more likely than older adults to say they are extremely or very likely to get a tattoo in the future: 19% of those under 30 say this, compared with 7% of those ages 30 to 49, 2% of those ages 50 to 64 and 1% of those 65 and older.

Some 13% of untattooed Hispanic adults say they are extremely or very likely to get a tattoo, compared with 8% of Black adults, 5% of Asian adults and 3% of White adults.

Adults without tattoos in lower- and middle-income households are also more likely than those in upper-income households to say they’re extremely or very likely to get one: 8% of lower-income adults and 6% of middle-income adults say this, compared with 2% of upper-income adults.

What do Americans without tattoos think about those who have them?

A bar chart that shows, for Americans without tattoos, seeing one on someone else gives them a more negative than positive impression of that person.

Among Americans who don’t have tattoos themselves, about three-in-ten (29%) say that seeing a tattoo on someone gives them a more negative than positive impression of that person. Just 5% say tattoos leave a more positive than negative impression. But the largest share of untattooed adults (66%) say seeing a tattoo on someone else leaves them with neither a positive nor negative impression of that person.

Men without tattoos are slightly more likely than women without tattoos to have a more negative impression of someone with a tattoo (32% vs. 27%).

There are differences by age, too: Among Americans without tattoos, 40% of those ages 65 and older say seeing someone with a tattoo gives them a more negative than positive impression of that person. Younger adults are less likely to hold this view.

A pie chart that shows most Americans say society has become more accepting of people with tattoos.

More broadly, Americans overall – including those with and without tattoos – believe society has become more accepting of people with tattoos over the past 20 years or so. Eight-in-ten U.S. adults say this, while far fewer (7%) say society has become less accepting of tattooed people. Another 12% say societal acceptance of people with tattoos has stayed about the same over the past two decades.

Note: Here are the  questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and the survey  methodology . This post was updated on Aug. 16, 2023, to indicate that there are no statistically significant differences by veteran status on having a tattoo.

Brittney Spencer celebrates Beyoncé collaboration with "Blackbird" tattoo

By Analisa Novak

April 18, 2024 / 12:55 PM EDT / CBS News

Rising country star Brittney Spencer couldn't believe she was hearing her voice on the song, "BLACKBIIRD" from Beyoncé' s album "Cowboy Carter."

Recalling the moment she heard her inclusion on the album, Spencer said she was with friends at her apartment.

"I just kind of like just dropped to the floor and just sat there for awhile," she said. "We played 'BLACKBIIRD' a few times, and I was like, 'This is wild, I can't believe it.' I kept looking at my phone like, 'is this actually the Beyonce album?'"

The significance of the song was amplified by praise from music legend Paul McCartney , who called the recording "magnificent" and appreciated its reinforcement of the civil rights message he intended when writing the original "BLACKBIIRD" for his band, The Beatles, in 1968.

"It means everything. The Beatles is my second favorite band of all time," said Spencer, who added that The Chicks is her favorite.

The shared experience led to a unique bond among the artists featured on the track. Spencer and the other women who contributed to "BLACKBIIRD" decided to commemorate their collaboration with tattoos. Each artist chose a design that resonated personally, with Spencer opting for a design that complements her other tattoos, incorporating a songbird wearing headphones.

Spencer said the song's meaning is resurfacing emotions for some.

"This song is really hopeful and healing for a lot of people, and I think it's a good thing to honor our heroes and the people who are still here," she said.

The collaboration has catapulted Spencer into the spotlight, where she performed on the CMT Awards. It's a long way from her days as an airport barista.

"I want to go as far as I can with music," she said. "But I think the more I go into this, I'm less concerned about what I do and I'm more concerned about who I am. And I'm an artist, which means I want to create and I appreciate that my career is providing me the opportunity to live in this space."
