17 Things To Do In The Berkshires With Kids
By Author Eileen P. Gunn
Posted on Last updated: September 18, 2023
Two Things To Do
Where to stay in stockbridge, where to eat around stockbridge:, two awesome things to do, where to stay around lenox, where to eat near jiminy, where to stay in north adams, north adams restaurants, pin it for later.
The Berkshires are one of those regions that looms in my mind as a summer vacation paradise. The region stretches along the spine of Route 7 up the length of Western Massachusetts. And it offers a bounty of things for families to do on a weekend getaway or week-long vacation.
Book lovers can visit Edith Wharton’s home or the Eric Carle Museum . Music lovers take in an outdoor concert in picturesque Tanglewood . Active families have their picks of state forests and nature preserves for hiking, kayaking and other pursuits.
Depending on what you choose to do you can base yourself in one of several towns along Route 7 and have your pick of kid-friendly hotels, inns and restaurants.
For us, the Berkshires seem compact enough that from almost any town you can get anywhere else for a day trip, but if you do want to do a lot at both ends then basing yourself in the center makes the most sense.
We spent a *weekend working our way from Great Barrington up to North Adams . We found room family-friendly hotels and a good variety of things to do and places to eat kid and parents all enjoyed.
We visited at the tail-end of summer. But most of the activities would also be ideal for a fall foliage weekend or a springtime mini-break.
While these ideas are only the tip of the iceberg, they are a good starting point for your own weekend getaway with kids in the Berkshires.

4 Awesome Towns in the Berkshires To Visit With Kids
Stockbridge and great barrington.
These two towns are close enough that we seem to spend a little time in both whenever we pass through the Berkshires.
1. On this trip we stopped at the Norman Rockwell Museum , which shares the grounds with his studio. My husband is not a fan of Rockwell and went into the museum skeptically.
He came out surprisingly impressed with the range of Rockwell’s work over his seven-decade career. It’s an easy museum to do with kids because it’s not too big and Rockwell’s art is very relatable. There’s also a kids’ art room with drop-in activities.
During WWII he produced magazine covers and posters that supported Roosevelt and the war effort. It seemed to free him up and make him appreciate his potential to influence national debates and opinions with his popular magazine covers.
Some of his civil-rights work in the 1960s is powerful and surprising for those of us who mostly know his depictions of idealized white America.
In his cozy studio we learned about his artistic process. He would photograph models, who were often his neighbors, in the scenes he had in mind and then paint large scale canvases from the photos that would be shot and shrunk to fit the magazine covers.
Whether or not you’re a Rockwell fan the museum is worth an hour or two because of the length of his career and the insights his magazine covers offer into the evolution of American life over the 20 th century.
2. The Berkshires are dotted with grand old estates and NaumKeag is easily among the most kid-friendly. You can visit the mansion on a tour.
We didn’t but another family that was there the same day we were said it was well worth it for a peek at the rich, homey interior and to hear the story of the home and Choate family who used it.
We spent all our time in the extensive gardens, playing bocce, finding hidden sculptures and generally wandering around. We loved the hidden Asian pavilion, where we got to relax on exotic furniture and write haikus.
Each summer they offer unique, usually family friendly activities that make the most of the lawns and gardens. Last summer the staff turned the outdoor space into a celebration of children’s classic books.
At various spots around the garden we helped Charlotte spin her web (top), had an Alice-inspired tea party on the grass and followed a robin to the Secret Garden, a cozy reading spot. I hope they revisit this theme again but it was really well done and fun. But they have special events on a regular basis. If you’re visiting the southern Berkshires it’s always worth checking to see what this estate has going on.
The Red Lion Inn might not look entirely child-friendly from the outside but the hotel has a variety of accommodations from traditional hotel rooms to entire guest home.
The main inn has a nice outdoor pool and the front porch is a delightful place to play a game or watch the world go by with a cold lemonade or local beer.
Great Barrington has more restaurants than Stockbridge. It’s the place to go if you want to walk around and see what appeals to you. We don’t have a favorite place in town but we’ve stopped in for Thai food and ice cream on various visits.
We’re big fans of the Great Barrington Brew Pub, outside of town on Route 7. There’s no kids menu but it’s easy to find something kids will eat among the starters, sides and sausages.
The beers (made entirely with solar power) are reliably good, especially the seasonal brews, and the desserts are made from scratch in-house. You can get growlers to take home and we often do.
Midway up the Berkshires is Lenox. It’s likely to be your base if you are going to Tanglewood or enjoying a yoga retreat at Kripalu ,which has family programs in summer.
Lenox also has Chocolate Springs , one of my favorite artisanal chocolate shops anywhere.
Kids can do their best to choose from items like fancy peanut butter cups or Oreos, pretzels and marshmallows dipped in chocolate.
You can buy some truffles for the grown-ups, too in flavors like Paris tea, orange honey and Berkshire Bourbon. My favorite is the Chai This Bar , dark chocolate flavored with tea and Indian spices.
1. If your family needs some activity and a mild adrenaline kick, head to Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort , which turns itself in to an outdoor adventure park during the summer.
I loved the long mellow Alpine slide and shorter, faster mountain coaster (you can control your speed on both) while Tween Traveler and her dad spent a good amount of time on progressively harder rope courses.
There is a mini rope course and play area for kids 8YO and under, and a bungee trampoline Tween Traveler loved. For more daring folks there is a giant swing and the screaming eagle, a long, fast, seated zip-line ride that is aptly named.
It’s wise to get an early start to avoid lines at the trampoline, slide and mountain coaster. But we easily spent a whole day doing our favorite things over multiple times.
2. The 19 th century Hancock Shaker Village is a great Berkshires destination with school-age kids and preschoolers. Explore the round communal barn, gardens and buildings, pet farm animals, try on Shaker clothes and learn to weave in the Discovery barn.
You can see demonstrations that explain all aspects of Shaker life. The onsite café uses ingredients from the farm.
Planning a trip to the Berkshires? • Get more room for less money with a vacation house in the mountains from VRBO. • Get the best rates available on the best Berkshire Mountain hotels on Trip Advisor.
We stayed at both the Berkshire Mountain Lodge outside Lenox and at Jiminy’s Country Inn . We liked them both.
The mountain lodge is more centrally located and is just outside of Lenox, a good town for restaurants and shopping.
The Country Inn is the obvious choice if you’re planning to spend a day at the Adventure Park.

Chistiansen’s Tavern sits at the bottom of Jiminy’s ski hill, in view of the trampoline. The afternoon we arrived we sat at the bar with waffle fries and beer while Tween Traveler ran around the playground area.
We had lunch on the outdoor deck during the full day we spent there and found the food really good, which s nice considering they have a captive audience; portions were large and we probably should have shared an entree.
I had fish tacos with crunchy red cabbage slaw while Rich had grilled hot dogs that came with both potato salad and chips. We all shared and loved a side of crispy fried string beans with tangy dipping sauce. The kids’ menu had the usual items.
For dinner we checked out the Old Forge on a friend’s recommendation. It was too chilly to take advantage of the fantastic back deck with its Berkshire views, unfortunately. But we were happy to be inside the cozy, wide-beamed dining room with its lively bar scene.
The restaurant is popular for its friendly vibe and old-school classics like onion soup, spicy etouffé, and scallops in white wine sauce. Arrive early or plan to wait for a table.
North Adams
This is one of your last towns in the Berkshire Mountains before hitting Vermont and it’s the place to soak up art and the area’s college-town vibe.
1. We started our day with a bike ride along the Ashuwillticook rail trail , which extends for 11 miles south of Adams. It’s a wide flat trail that winds through woods and along a reservoir. It has several access points and is perfect for biking with kids
Read my tips for biking on family vacations .
2. Then we headed to MassMOCA , which Tween Traveler dreaded since she has decided she doesn’t like museums that aren’t “interactive.”
But this art museum sprawls across a 16 acres of converted mill buildings and even if you aren’t the biggest fan of contemporary art (like me) you’re bound to find something appealing among the permanent and guest exhibits.
We were all intrigued by Nick Cave’s sparkly, celestial, interactive installation exploring gun violence.
Tween traveler felt immediately at home in KidSpace . The museums commissions art for this room that kids can relate to and interact with (yay!). She spent time climbing in and around a structure called Courage before going to the desk to ask for an art kit.
These are lunch boxes with materials for projects that evoke the work you’ve seen in the galleries and they adapt well to a variety of ages.
Play with stripes of color like Sol Lewitt or use pipe cleaners to make trees inspired by the ones Natalie Jeremijenko hung upside down in the courtyard. While she made art I popped over to the nearby galleries to explore more.
The Porches is a relatively new hotel on the edge of North Adams. It adds a hip boutiquey option to the Berkshires hote scene.
Created from a row of connected porch-fronted Victorian houses, it offers free breakfast, a comfortable lounge with fireplace and bar, and an outdoor pool and whirlpool.
It’s funky in a casual way. With roomy double-queen rooms and one- and two-bedroom suites there’s a lot to appeal to families.
North Adams is a college town with ample dining options. For starters, MassMoca has two restaurants, a cafe and a taproom.
Pedrin’s Dairy Barn is a seasonal drive-in just south of town with whole-belly fried clams, burgers, onion rings and shakes.
We walked to PUBLIC eat + drink , a few blocks from the museum. It looks too industrial chic to be kid friendly but there were plenty of families there, including a few we recognized from the museum.
Their soups, sandwiches and tacos change a bit seasonally and pair up well for lunch. The fish & chips is a reasonable portion. Kids will be happy sharing that with a parent, or with a simple flatbread pizza, one of the soups or chicken tenders.
If they finish their lunch, treat them to an ice cream sandwich from the dessert menu.
*We received complementary hotel stays and admission to some attractions for this story, in particular the Adventure Center at Jiminy. We paid for our meals and for admission to Naumkeag. I did not agree in advance to any particular coverage in exchange for the support. My opinions are always my own.
Photos of the Rockwell Museum, Naumkeag, Hancock Shaker Village MassMOCA are the property of FamiliesGo!©. All other photos are courtesy of the respective store, restaurant or hotel.

14 Unique Days Out in Berkshire You Need to Experience
Are you looking for amazing days out in Berkshire? Make the most of your Berkshire days out with this guide to the best attractions the county has to offer.
Stretching out above Hampshire and bordering Greater London to the east, Berkshire is home to the iconic English towns of Windsor, Reading and Slough, among others. There are also plenty of charming rural villages, sprawling green spaces and numerous Berkshire days out for the entire family, from Legoland Windsor to the Christmassy Lapland UK.
In this article, we’ll show you 16 of the best days out in Berkshire to help you plan your year.
Fun Days Out in Berkshire
Here are the best days out in Berkshire for your year of England adventures.
- 1. Legoland Windsor
Arguably the UK’s most popular theme park for kids , Legoland Windsor is the perfect destination for a family day out in Berkshire. Based entirely around the popular children’s toy, Lego, the park encompasses all sorts of attractions.
There are rides and attractions suitable for kids and adults, a model village of some of the world’s most famous landmarks, interactive shows and performances and much more. Kids from the age of 3 can become learner drivers at L-school and real life fish, sharks and rays can be spotted at the Deep Sea Adventure attraction.
There are also hotels onsite, so you can arrange a multi-day short stay in order to ensure you get the most from your visit. LEGOLAND is a great day out for toddlers.
BUY YOUR LEGOLAND WINDSOR TICKETS HERE
- 2. Ascot Racecourse
Ascot is one of the most famous venues in the world of horse racing – a chance for visitors to glam up and spend the day sipping champagne and betting on the races. The course is closely associated with the royal family and was first established by Queen Anne in 1711.
There are approximately 26 race days every year, so there are plenty of opportunities to grab tickets and enjoy a day out.
The week-long Royal Ascot is the most popular event, when hundreds of thousands of spectators descend on the venue, including Queen Elizabeth II, who attends every year to cheer on some of her own horses from the royal box.
- 3. Windsor Great Park
Spanning more than 5,000 acres, Windsor Great Park is all that remains of Windsor Royal Park, a hunting forest once owned by the royal family.
Although it is now open to the public, it is still managed and funded by the Crown, the only royal park not managed by The Royal Parks organisation.
Visitors can stroll around the different parts of the park for free. These include the beautiful wildflower meadows of The Valley Gardens, the swan adorned lake and waterfall of Virginia Water, and mile after mile of walking trail through the deer park, a survivor from the times of royal hunting. There is a small charge to enter the Savill Garden, home to an array of native and foreign plants.
- 4. Basildon Park, Reading
Located on the outskirts of Reading a short way into the beautiful Chiltern Hills, Basildon Park is a grand country house and estate.
Made from honey coloured Bath stone, it is most well-known for its use as a prisoner of war camp during the Second World War, after which it fell into a state of disrepair. Saved by Lord and Lady Iliffe, it is now managed by the National Trust, having been restored to its former glory.
Many of the stately rooms are open to the public, and Lady Iliffe’s Rose Garden is a beautiful place to enjoy a stroll during the summer, buzzing with bees and butterflies.
- 5. Lapland UK, Winkfield Row
If the kids deserve an extra special Christmas treat, then look no further than Lapland UK, working out significantly cheaper than a trip to Finland!
Taking the kids on a Christmas adventure, they will receive a personalised invitation from Santa once you have made your booking, sure to get the excitement building. On arrival at the experience, kids will be invited to meet the elves in the Enchanted Forest, help out with the toymaking in the Workshop, and meet Santa himself in his secret wooden cabin, complete with real reindeer.
On Christmas morning, they will also discover that the elves decided your children deserved to keep the gifts they made in the Workshop, so Santa dropped them off during Christmas Eve.
This is definitely one of the best days out in Berkshire for all the Christmassy feels. If you want more great Santa days out in England , check out our list here.
- 6. BCA Zoo, Berkshire College of Agriculture, Maidenhead
Like many universities and colleges, the Berkshire College of Agriculture keeps a resident population of animals to help train students in its animal, agriculture and conservation courses. BCA recently opened its zoo to the public, although advance booking is essential, they don’t accept walk ins.
More than 100 species live at the zoo, including many rare species, some of which the college helps to breed as part of international conservation efforts. These include the Bali starling, Slow loris and Desertas wolf spider. Other more well known creatures such as porcupines, meerkats and Ring-tailed lemurs are also housed at the zoo.
It might not be the biggest zoo in England , but it’s definitely worth a visit for a day out in Berkshire.
- 7. Go Ape, Bracknell
The Go Ape brand has become a household name across the UK for its range of high ropes courses, challenging youngsters and adults alike to push themselves amongst the treetops – and Swinley Forest’s Go Ape is no different.
Located just outside Bracknell, the course has been designed to test stamina, skill and endurance, with challengers spending around three hours amongst the ropes. There are also zip lines and a children’s version of the course, whilst those who’d prefer to give the experience a miss can hire segways and head out to explore Swinley Forest.
- 8. The Living Rainforest, Thatcham
Thatcham’s Living Rainforest is an indoor tropical paradise, replicating the real conditions found in tropical jungles across the world. More than 100,00 visitors are recorded at the site every year, flocking to see some of the 850 plants and animal species on display in the exhibit. The site is managed by a charity, the Trust for Sustainable Living and some of the animal inhabitants include Two toed sloths, Six-banded armadillos, toucans, iguanas, pythons and more.
The exhibit is also powered by mainly renewable energy and is constantly evolving new ways to make itself more sustainable.
As well as being one of the most impressive eco days out in Berkshire, The Living Forest is also one of the top eco days out in England.
- 9. Day out in Bray
Bray is just one of many charming country villages in the south of England. It has lush surrounding countryside, old Tudor framed buildings and the odd pub. But what sets Bray apart is that it is home to two of the UK’s seven restaurants to have been awarded not one, not two, but three Michelin stars. This is quite an achievement for a sleepy country village.
Visitors to Bray can choose to dine in the Roux brother’s Waterside Inn or Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck – known for its experimental menus and molecular gastronomy.
- 10. Reading Museum
Housed in Reading’s town hall, this fascinating museum explores the history of the town, charting its path from small Saxon settlement all the way up to the urban university town it is known as today.
Some of the Reading Museum’ s most notable exhibits include a collection of Roman artefacts from the nearby ruins of Calleva Atrebatum, pieces recovered from the ruins of Reading Abbey and, most famously, the UK’s only copy of the Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the Norman conquest of Britain.
There is also plenty of artwork from local artists and a small exhibit dedicated to the biscuit industry, which led to Reading’s meteoric rise during the Victorian period. One of the best days out in Berkshire for history lovers.
- 11. Dinton Pastures Country Park, Wokingham
The continuing urban sprawl stretching out from London means that Berkshire isn’t the most rural county in England, but it still has its fair share of nature sites and outdoor spaces. Dinton Pastures Country Park on the edge of Wokingham is one of the best.
The 450 acre park consists of seven lakes, woodland, meadows and has two rivers flowing through it. There are three public bird hides, where birdwatchers can try to catch a glimpse of some of the parks numerous species – everything from barn owls and sparrowhawks to rare species such as nightingales and common garden birds, from blackbirds to robins.
Sailing, kayaking, angling and canoeing are also popular on some of the park’s several watercourses.
- 12. Museum of English Rural Life, Reading
The agriculture department at the University of Reading is regarded as one of the best in the country, so it is perhaps no surprise that this fantastic museum is operated by the university.
Located on the smaller London Road campus, the Museum of English Rural Life has been open since 1951, and maps more than 250 years of English agriculture. Exhibits include all sorts of tools, clothes, ploughs, tractors and more which have been collected from around the country. Kids can enjoy some of the multimedia exhibits and there are opportunities for them to dress up as farmers from a bygone era.
- 13. Colne Valley Regional Park
Covering a colossal 27,500 acres across parts of Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Surrey, Colne Valley Regional Park is the first significant stretch of countryside you’ll encounter after leaving London.
The park is a patchwork of farmland, woodland, meadows, rivers and more, with walking trails aplenty to help city dwellers engage with the countryside. There are no key attractions per se, but it is such a large expanse of nature that packing a picnic and heading out for a wander is probably the best way to explore, who knows what you’ll find!

Our Mission
All the workshop providers and venues featured on this website are there because they specifically offer their services to schools. We have provided them with a page or pages FREE OF Charge where they can set out the details of the workshops they deliver and other relevant information. There is also a form that buyers can use to enquire or book. This service is also, of course, FREE TO USE by all buyers.
All enquiries from buyers are automatically forwarded to sellers directly by the software.
In order to generate the income that Educational Workshops will need to maintain and grow this site we will be offering a range of additional, but optional benefits to suppliers (including providers of products and other services listed in Edsuma .) The first of these will be the ability to advertise on this site-specific discounts and sales. This service will help buyers to keep costs to a minimum. It will be launched in the autumn term.
We have decided not to charge suppliers for their listings because we are determined to provide schools and other organisations in the education sector with the widest possible choice. So we will be working hard to provide the widest possible geographical coverage for all listings. However, we are pleased to say, that with more than 500 workshop and venue listings, we have already made an impressive start.
If you remain concerned about admitting visitors to the school to deliver different kinds of Workshops for Schools, please be aware that we also have listings on this site for online workshops . Many workshop facilitators have had no income since March 2020. So without schools’ support, they will not survive. Therefore please provide that support as soon as you are able.
Edsuma is a new way for buyers in the education sector to quickly find the suppliers of products who are most likely to sell you what you need. It features more than 800 suppliers selling 96 different categories of products and services from 3D Printers and scanners to Wnter Products and Services. To start using it click on Edsuma in the menu above.

Berkshires travel guide: an outdoorsy weekend itinerary.
The Berkshires is a region in Western Massachusetts best known for its mountains, farmland, and quaint towns. I had the chance to spend a weekend there last fall, and it was a really lovely trip from Boston.
Here are some top things to do in the region, including hiking and wandering the cute towns.

When to Visit the Berkshires
The Berkshires are especially beautiful in the fall, as Western Mass is known for its gorgeous fall foliage. We went in the last weekend of September, and conditions then were ideal. The leaves were noticeably colorful, though not quite at their peak, but the weather was still very mild and warm enough to go camping.
If you want to see fall foliage, I’d recommend going in late September or early October. Be sure to check the current year’s fall foliage map before you plan your trip though, as conditions vary slightly by year.
The spring and summer are also a lovely time, as you’ll get to see the wildflowers and take a dip in the many natural bodies of water . I myself would love to take a summer trip to the Berkshires!
How Long Should You Spend in the Berkshires?
A full weekend should be just the right amount of time. If you’re coming from Boston, you need to factor in a 2.5-3 hour drive. We left Boston Saturday late morning to arrive in the afternoon, then returned Sunday in the early afternoon. It felt a little rushed, and we would’ve liked to do a lot more, but we were also happy with what were able to do.
If you’re coming from Boston as well, I’d recommend leaving a little earlier on Saturday morning, or even taking part of Friday off to head over (I wouldn’t try leaving Boston during normal post-work hours, as traffic will be a nightmare on Friday evening).
The Berkshires is such a large region that you could easily spend a week exploring the area, but you could also easily do a handful of the most popular things in a day (if you’re based close by). Just be careful about traffic and make sure there aren’t any major events happening along the Mass Pike—our drive there took way longer than it should’ve because of an expo in Springfield.
Best Things to Do in the Berkshires – Weekend Itinerary
Here’s a look at some of best ways to spend weekend in the Berkshires, plus some more ideas if you have extra time.
1. Visit the quaint towns and browse the local shops.
The towns in the Berkshires have such an old-time charm. You’ll find lots of antique stores and general stores with local goods. Here are the towns we visited:
Stockbridge
This was by far my favorite town, as it was the most bustling (which is relative, given that these are all peaceful little towns). There were cute shops, restaurants, and dessert shops. You’ll also find the historic Red Lion Inn , which has a lovely courtyard for outdoor dining and a front porch lined with classic rocking chairs (sometimes there are even live music performances). They also have a quaint indoor dining room, tavern, and pub.
Just a short walk from the town center, you’ll find the Norman Rockwell Museum . If you’re not familiar with the Norman Rockwell, he was an American painter and illustrator whose work focused on American culture and everyday life. One of his most iconic pieces, The Problem We All Live With , depicts six-year-old Ruby Bridges (an African-American student) on her way to an all-white school during the era of desegregation.
This town had the cutest antique store called Finders Keepers. There were two other shops called The Uptown Store (records and vintage music equipment), and Christopher James Antiques & Collectibles. We otherwise didn’t find a lot to do, but there are a handful of restaurants.
The main attraction in Lenox is Edith Wharton’s home, called The Mount . Edith Wharton was an American writer who was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Literature. Her novels focused heavily on the American elite, and she used her insider status to portray their lives more realistically. Common themes included self-fulfillment, social roles, and repressed sexuality.
Her estate in Lenox includes a beautifully-decorated mansion and lush, green garden grounds. You’ll also find frequent events such as author talks, bird walks, and seasonal ghost tours (the mansion is said to be haunted).
The town center is also home to several shops, particularly local art galleries.
2. Pitch a tent at the foot of the mountains (or in the mountains!).
If you’re hoping to camp near the Mt. Greylock area, you have two options for campsites:
Mt. Greylock Campsite Park —We ended up staying in this campsite at the foot of Mt. Greylock. It’s owned by the sweetest older couple, and they go out of their way to make you feel welcome. It costs around $40 for a pond campsite for one night, and $35 for a regular campsite. We stayed at the pond, which had the loveliest view.
If you like fishing, the owners even provide poles to borrow and worms for free. There just happened to be a bonfire the night we arrived, and they also provided free ingredients and equipment to make s’mores. The next morning, we were also treated to free coffee and pumpkin bread, which had been baked by the couple’s friend.
If you come in the summer, they even have an outdoor pool. In all seasons, they have a rec room with tons of board games and free wifi. The bathrooms were also very clean, and the other campers were friendly.
Sperry Road Campground —This campsite is directly on Mt. Greylock. It’s a little more complicated though, as it’s a hike-in campsite. You need to park your car 1.3 miles away and hike to the campsite with all your belongings. There are also no showers, and they only have composting toilets. Correspondingly, it costs less to camp here, at $8 for MA residents and $10 for non-residents. If you want a real camping experience, this is your place, but if you want some more amenities, I’d recommend Mt. Greylock Campsite Park.
If camping isn’t your thing, there are also tons of cute cabins and apartment rentals. Here’s a log cabin on the lake in the woods , a stone cottage on the way to Mt. Greylock , and a charming two-bed apartment in Lee . If you prefer hotels, here are the top-rated ones .
3. Hike to the highest point in Massachusetts.
There are lots of options for hiking in the Berkshires, but I wanted to go to Mt. Greylock for the elevation gain. If you’re used to the mountains in the Pacific Northwest or the Alps, New England hiking will probably disappoint you—both in terms of elevation gain and views (basically just a bunch of trees). Still, Mt. Greylock is the highest point in the state, at 3489 ft (1063m). If that was the tallest mountain I could get in Massachusetts, I wanted to go there 🙂
We unfortunately didn’t have a ton of time to hike, so we started halfway up the mountain at the Mt. Greylock Campground parking lot (the lot for Sperry Road Campsite). The hike to the top from there was about 3 miles with 1100ft gain. If we’d had extra time, I would’ve liked to start at the bottom from the Haley Farm Trailhead in Williamstown. That would’ve been 5.4 miles with 2734ft gain.
At the top, there’s a war memorial for WWI veterans, a panoramic view, and a lodge where you can stay or grab a bite to eat (they had a pretty decent veggie burger). The view at the top wasn’t exactly breathtaking, but it was nice. I’d recommend going into lodge (called Bascom Lodge) just for the view from their windows. The dining area and extra seating area have a lovely view of the mountains from the windows.
Other Activities If You Have More Time
The Berkshires is a large region, and it’s impossible to do everything in a weekend. Here are some other ideas of things to do if you have more time, or are just looking for alternatives:
- Visit a farm to pick apples, corn, or berries (depending on the season). The Berkshires is a rural region after all, so it makes sense to spend some time on a farm.
- Check out the Retro Pop Shop. This store is technically in Lee, one of the towns I recommended visiting, but it’s far out from the town center. I only saw this shop when driving by, and really wanted to turn around and take a look around. According to reviews, you’ll find tons of retro signs/posters and quirky objects.
- Go to Charles H. Baldwin and Sons. A local friend recommended this store to me, but it was a little out of the way in West Stockbridge. The shop is best known for its vanilla extract and other extracts and spices. You’ll also find local candy, toys, and souvenirs.
Hiking Gear I Recommend
If you’re planning to shop on Amazon, I have some affiliate links for products that I use and love. If you want to avoid Amazon, consider shopping instead at REI or Dick’s Sporting Goods or buying from a small, local shop.
Trekking poles —These are helpful for hikes with significant elevation gain, as they take some strain off of your legs; they also have kept me from falling on steep descents. I use Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z poles. They’re pricey, but I really wanted high-quality, lightweight Z-fold poles since I was hoping to use them for trail races. If Black Diamond is out of your budget, these Foxelli poles and Paria poles are well-reviewed. I didn’t feel that I needed poles on the hike I did, but they were still helpful.
Hiking boots —I purchased Clorts boots a few years ago since they were the most affordable hiking boots I saw on Amazon. The model I got back then is now unavailable, but this pair looks similar and has more ankle support than mine.
Hydration pack —I didn’t bring my hydration vest on this hike, but I use this Triwonder one for my trail runs and shorter hikes. I like that it doubles as a small backpack at 10L, has a phone pocket on the left chest, and lets me secure my poles on the back with the adjustable elastic. You also get a free emergency blanket and whistle with the pack.
I hope this gives you a better idea of things to do in the Berkshires! Be sure to take proper precautions, and enjoy the beautiful region.

Things for Kids to Do on Winter Break
Posted on January 08, 2024 Written by Nancy Macy on behalf of 1Berkshire Updated on January 11, 2024
Imagine a school vacation that is relaxing and fun for everyone!
Looking for things to do with kids during February break in the Berkshires? Here are a few suggestions (with the grownups in mind, too).
Get Outdoors
From snow sports to hiking, the Berkshires is a picturesque playground in winter. Many local attractions offer special activities and programs geared for kids during school vacation weeks. Explore trails at Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary , learn to ski or snowboard, or cross-country ski or snowshoe at Hilltop Orchards , Maple Corner Farm , and Notchview . Try tubing or experience the thrill of night skiing. Or if you’re kiddos like playing in the dirt, Berkshire Botanical Garden’s Farm in the Garden Camp develops green thumbs by connecting children to the environment and food system by planting seedlings, collecting eggs, taking walks in nature, and creating botanical crafts.
Discover Nature, Indoors
For nature lovers who head inside when it’s cold outside, the 8,000-square-foot tropical environment of Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory & Gardens is worth the short drive from the Berkshires to South Deerfield. Berkshire Museum in downtown Pittsfield is another great choice for kids of all ages who would enjoy learning about interesting objects or wildlife that is native to the Berkshires. Afterward, get lunch at Champney’s Restaurant & Tavern in Deerfield or The Marketplace Cafe in Pittsfield.
Explore Art & Storytelling
KidsSpace at MASS MoCA is an art-making space with special programs and hands-on activities just for kids. There are also scheduled story times featuring children’s books about art and creativity. Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art has story times, too, and their bookstore is filled with delightful children’s literature that may become a childhood favorite (or remind you of yours). Storytelling takes on a bigger-than-life twist at Berkshire Art Center ’s GIANT CAMP! as young artists aged 6 and up design and build a magical giant and write the story of its adventurous life. Or learn printmaking at The Clark . For kids aged 7-17 interested in theater arts, there’s Riotous Youth camp at Shakespeare & Co .
Ice Cream, Candy, (And Cows!)
If you have not already discovered the delicious dairy products available from High Lawn Farm at your local grocery store, this is your chance. Visit the farm’s on-site Creamery for an ice cream cone and sample of their cheeses. You can even meet the cows. Those with a sweet tooth should not miss Robin’s Candy in Great Barrington, where the counters and shelves are filled with classic childhood favorites, a large selection of licorice, and handmade chocolates. And have you tried the Serious Hot Chocolate at Chocolate Springs ?
To round out your school vacation break in the Berkshires, enjoy family-friendly lodging (be sure to sort by “Family Friendly”) and restaurants , shopping , and the countless attractions and activities that are often geared toward kids. Find more about where to play, stay, and eat with our travel planning tools where you’ll find the most current Winter Guide, the Official Guide to the Berkshires , and the new BerkshiresOutside.org website where you can hunt for outdoor recreation in all seasons.
