Nothing ruins the fun like leaks or warm refreshments, so picking out the right insulated cooler bag calls for some research. The best insulated cooler bags are durable, some level of leakproof, have a good temperature retention, and are comfortable to carry. We’ve done the research and even tested the top options to help you narrow down the selection and make sure you buy a winner.

A cute and roomy tote-style bag came out on top of our testing. But maybe you’re looking for a cooler you can float in the water, toss on your back, or cart around on wheels. We’ve tried those, too. We tested all of the picks below out in the real world or in our in-house lab. Either way, we’ve ensured the cooler is up to snuff and ready to stuff.

Best Overall

Hydro flask day escape cooler tote.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Insulation 4.8 /5
  • Durability 4.8 /5

It’s functional and fashionable.

The ice retention is variable depending on the weather.

We tested the Hydroflask Day Escape 26L in two different real-world scenarios, including in the hot southern sun and out on a boat trip . The 600D polyester exterior is durable and waterproof, and we really liked how they worked it into the cute tote design. The fact that it’s leakproof, easy to carry, spacious inside (one tester’s mom was loving the fact she could lay a veggie tray on the bottom with no issues), and stylish put it at the top of our list. There are no additional pockets or storage options, but the tote does have built-in loops and attachment capabilities so you can customize it with compatible extras as needed.

One qualm was that the temperature retention wasn’t consistent. Most of the ice had melted within 2.5 hours when the cooler was out in Tennessee during the height of summer, but it kept more ice intact and drinks cool in lower temperatures out on the water. That said, we’re confident it could do the job on a day trip. We flipped the bag upside down when it was fully loaded and gave it a shake, and we’re happy to report there was no leaking. Overall, the Day Escape’s performance is outstanding.

Best Budget

Tourit cooler backpack.

  • Design 5 /5
  • Insulation 3.8 /5
  • Maneuverability 4.8 /5
  • Durability 3.5 /5

Several built-in features and storage pockets make it a good bargain.

It disappointed us during our durability tests.

The Tourit 30-can Cooler Backpack holds more like 20 cans with ice, and we love it for its bang-for-your-buck price and lightweight, multi-feature design. In addition to the main compartment, you’ll have your pick of extra storage options, including two side mesh pockets, a spacious front lid zip pocket, and a slim strap pocket (great for holding a phone or cash). It presents like a regular backpack and is easy to lift and carry, making it perfect for picnics in city parks . The thick-lined insulated interior is also leakproof (but the backpack itself isn't) and can keep ice for up to 16 hours. The padded, adjustable straps are comfortable, but there is no chest strap, and wearing the backpack at full capacity for significant distances may not be ideal for some. Unfortunately, we also experienced heavy leaking through the zippers and cans denting in the interior after we tossed this cooler off a table a couple times. However, no other damage was present, and we think this backpack performs admirably in most everyday scenarios.

The Details: 30 cans | 1.1 pounds | 13 x 7.5 x 15.8 inches | Ice retention: 16 hours

Best with Wheels

Arctic zone titan wheeled cooler.

What’s better than a big cooler with wheels? A big cooler with detachable wheels!

It isn’t leakproof.

We tested an unwheeled version of this cooler and liked it — but realized we’d love it with wheels. We’ve owned the wheel-less version of this cooler for two years and even trusted it to keep a baby’s milk cold during long 10-hour drives across the country and for chilled drinks at the beach in over 100-degree weather. We’re fans of the extra storage from the two front pockets and the two side mesh pockets that are big enough for magazines or books. A reflective radiant heat barrier and triple-layer Cold Block base will, quite impressively, keep ice for up to three days. At full capacity, this cooler can get heavy — luckily, the detachable trolley cart can transport up to 100 pounds (there’s also a padded shoulder strap) and features a telescopic handle. It’s worth noting that the capacity is listed as 60 cans, which actually breaks down into 10 cans in the front insulated pocket and 50 in the main compartment. Note that this is not a leakproof option and shouldn't be laid on its side or upside down.

The Details: 60 cans | 6.75 pounds | 14.25 x 6.75 x 19.5 inches | Ice retention: 3 days

Best Ice Retention

Yeti hopper flip.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Insulation 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

The temperature retention is top-notch, and it feels virtually indestructible.

The price is investment-level high.

This 12-can cooler lives up to the Yeti name and gave us impeccable ice and temperature retention. The cooler was tested multiple days at the beach , where it sat in the hot mid-80-degree sun for hours and still kept things notably cold. Cold cell insulation gives the cooler its superb ice retention and makes it perfect for use in hot weather or on overnight trips. Did we mention the heavy-duty, mildew-resistant over shell is not only durable but also blocks UV rays? If you’re hesitant about the single-compartment design, it does sport Yeti’s hitch-point grid that allows you to attach things to the exterior. Even when fully loaded with 12 cans and ice, the extra-thick shoulder strap made it feel like less of a haul, and you also have top and side handles as options. The durability of this totally leakproof cooler cannot be understated as we really put it to the test, from throwing it against rocks and floating it out in the salty ocean water to checking it in luggage. The price is hefty, but consider it an investment, because this baby will last.

The Details: 12 cans | 2.8 pounds | 12.4 x 8.6 x 10.6 inches | Leakproof | Other sizes: 8 cans, 18 cans

Best Backpack

Igloo pro snapdown backpack.

  • Design 4.8 /5

It’s very comfortable to carry and has loads of extra built-in features.

It only comes in two colors/patterns.

Features and versatility are what sped this Igloo backpack cooler to the top of the list for us. We’re big fans of the built-in bottle opener, MOLLE loops and D-rings, trolley sleeve, and the extra pocket and compartment storage capabilities. The wide, main zippered compartment has no organizational features, but it’s easy to load — we fit 40 cans sans ice and 14 cans with the one-third-to-two-thirds cans-to-ice ratio — and the buckle-down rolltop felt secure when filled at varying capacities. Padded, adjustable straps and a chest strap make it comfortable to carry for long periods (key), even fully loaded. The ripstop material stood up well to our durability and leak tests, and temperature retention was notable. Overall this is a good backpack cooler for the price, but we’d love it more if they gave more than two color or pattern options.

The Details: 42 cans | 2.1 pounds | 13 x 7.5 x 13 inches | Leakproof

Best for Picnics

Iron flask soft cooler.

  • Design 4.2 /5
  • Maneuverability 4 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5

It has excellent temperature retention (even in high heat) and an impressively comfortable shoulder strap.

The rigid shape can feel bulky in certain situations.

We admittedly prefer using reusable ice packs in coolers but ended up being pleasantly surprised at the ice retention of this bag during testing. While visiting a park in 90-degree weather, we found minimal ice meltage, prompting us to use it for transporting delicate frozen items like ice cream on summer walks home from the grocery store (but the size and rigid shape felt bulky when browsing the aisles). This is an ideal size for beach hangs or tailgating or any situation where you can just transport it to a spot, plop it down, and then dig in.

It says it’s a 20-can cooler, but we easily fit 24 cans plus ice. We’ve found it’s large enough for storing food and drink for one to four people. After our toss test, there were a few scuffs that didn’t take much effort to remove. It comes with built-in cup holders on top and a bottle opener, and we couldn’t believe how comfortable the padded shoulder strap felt. It tipped over in the sun without leaking, likely thanks to the extra-tight zipper (it comes with zipper lube if needed). Our only pain point is the price, so we suggest taking advantage of any sales.

The Details: 12 liters | 3 pounds | 17.3 x 11.4 x 7.9 inches | Leakproof | Ice retention: 48 hours

Best for Water Activities

Rtic insulated soft cooler bag.

It’s a heavy-duty, ultra-insulated cooler with high durability.

It can feel cumbersome when full and carried on the shoulder for long periods.

If you’re looking to snag all the benefits of a hard-sided cooler with the flexibility that comes with a soft-side cooler, the RTIC Soft Pack should be your go-to — especially if you’re heading out on the water. The thick, heavy-duty nylon exterior is highly durable and escaped our toss tests and beatings with minor scuffs. Any sand, mud, or dirt easily just rinses off. Yes, the leakproof zippers are tight, but they kept the cooler leakproof during our upside-down shake test. A noticeably thick interior insulating layer excels at temperature retention — we left the cooler out in the summer sun for over two hours, and barely any ice melted, and the drinks were crisp and cool. Want to take this cooler in the water? Go for it without worrying about water leaking inside (or outside of the bag back in your car). One downside we should mention is that the cooler wasn’t as comfortable as we’d have liked with a heavy load and carried on the shoulder. We suggest two people carrying it via the tote handles when it’s packed full and not using it solo on any excursions with long walks.

The Details: 20 cans | 3 pounds | 13.5 x 9.5 x 13.75 inches | Leakproof | Other sizes: 12 cans, 30 cans, 40 cans | Ice retention: 24 hours

Hydro Flask Carry Out Soft Cooler

  • Maneuverability 4.7 /5

It has the perfect mix of portability and capacity for a day outing.

It’s currently only available in three colors, and one is a limited edition.

This 12-liter soft cooler was the perfect midsize we didn’t realize we desperately wanted for a day out at the beach with friends. It’s larger than a lunchbox cooler but still small enough to be manageable on an outing (and to fit in your suitcase). With nothing else, this ultra-portable cooler can carry around 12 cans. Since we were testing for temperature and ice retention, we filled it up with snacks for three: six cans, three sandwiches, a pack of string cheese, and a bag of ice — and it all fit easily and nice and cold as the cooler impressed us with its ability to retain about two-thirds of the ice after six hours at the beach in 80-degree weather. The padded strap kept it comfy on the shoulder, but we also found it easy to carry via the tote handles. Durability was not a problem, and wiping off the little bit of dirt from the exterior nylon material was painless. It’s even got a small stash pocket in the front, which we found perfect for hiding trash or holding keys. We're just left wishing it came in more than three colors.

The Details: 12 liters | 1.77 pounds | 9.95 x 14.5 x 12.7 inches | Ice retention: 24 hours

Best for Commuters

Carhartt 2-in-1 insulated cooler backpack.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Insulation 4.7 /5

It works for cooler and dry storage, and it can pass as a regular backpack.

Cooler space is limited.

This insulated cooler backpack works perfectly for day trips where you’ll want to store both dry and chilled items. Only the bag’s lower zippered compartment is insulated, giving you a dedicated space for storing dry items and items that need chilling. Although the bag claims to be able to hold 24 cans, we could only squeeze in 10 cans comfortably (with ice) in the lower insulated space. (Note: more cans can be stored in the main compartment, but it’s not insulated.) The 600-denier water-resistant canvas material was extra durable, surviving our toss tests with top scores, but it didn’t perform as well as we wanted during the leak test. We don’t recommend storing any electronics in the dry compartment when the bottom is filled with ice unless the bag stays upright at all times.

This backpack can easily be slung over your shoulders and won’t stick out as a cooler among other commuter bags — it’ll be your little secret. We think it’s a go-to bag for bringing lunch to work. Having the overall design of a regular backpack worked in our favor regarding features, too. There’s a front zippered organization pocket, two stretchy mesh side pockets, and two front slip pockets, making it felt more like a regular everyday backpack that just happens to have a cooler compartment than a cooler backpack. We also love how the bag’s extra padding made it very comfortable to wear, even when full.

The Details: 12 cans | 2.1 pounds | 12.5 x 8 x 17.5

Best Collapsible

Icemule pro cooler 23l.

This is a durable, comfortable, and functional cooler that will last.

There are no exterior pockets or storage compartments.

This collapsible cooler bag takes a cue from the dry-bag playbook with its convenient buckle roll top and waterproof welding seam design. We tested the large 23-liter size and could easily fill the bag to its 18-can capacity — with room to spare — and kept our beverages super cold. The top-loading design makes it a cinch to load, unload, and peek into the bag to suss out available room. When you’re not using the cooler, it conveniently flattens down for easy transport and storage. IceMule is known for its high-quality materials, and this bag held up against our durability tests, leading us to believe it’s in it for the long haul.

Packing food? The 18-inch height makes this bag great for stacking; just be sure any food is stored in sturdy, stackable plastic containers or boxes so nothing gets crushed. Overall, we found the weight was evenly distributed and the padded back and straps comfortable when wearing, but the chest strap does land at an awkward place for some people. Aside from the chest strap (which may depend on the wearer), we just wish this floatable, water-tight, and tough cooler bag had some exterior pockets.

The Details: 23 liters | 2.6 pounds | 14 x 11 x 18 inches | Leakproof | Other sizes: 21 liters | Ice retention: 24 hours

These products were evaluated as part of two different cooler testing processes. All backpack-style coolers that made the list were tested in our very own in-house testing lab. Each bag underwent a line of rigorous testing, allowing us to gauge their performance side-by-side and see how they measured up when it came to capacity (both full of 12-ounce cans and then one-third filled with cans and two-thirds filled with ice, the recommended ratio for optimal cooling and ice retention), comfort while wearing, extra features such as storage pockets, durability, leakage, and ice retention. We packed the coolers full, strapped them on and walked around wearing them, and did a push test off of a table. After two hours, backpacks were placed on their side for five minutes and inspected for leakage.

Non-backpack coolers were tested out in the real world on multiple outings. Environments included grocery shopping, picnics, beach days, and festivals. Before taking off, we noted the overall quality and appearance of the coolers, including any extra features like storage compartments. Coolers were filled with beverages plus ice. After 2.5 hours, we recorded the ice retention and the temperature of the drinks. Durability was tested by tossing the cooler down the stairs (twice!) and slamming it on a hard floor surface before checking for any damage or wear.

We will continue testing these coolers over time, collecting insights for an additional six months and updating our picks and descriptions as necessary.

Tips for Buying an Insulated Cooler Bag

Carefully consider capacity and size needs.

Like lunch boxes , insulated cooler bags come in all shapes, sizes, and capacities. Think about what you’ll want to pack inside the cooler, now and in the future. Remember to factor ice or ice packs into your capacity needs (capacity is often advertised without ice included).

Anticipate the appropriate accessories for your needs

Consider your insulated cooler bag as an investment. Think of different ways you will need to use the insulated cooler bag down the line. Buying a bag that can be accessorized may prevent you from having to purchase a different bag in the future. Some common accessories include ice packs, carabiner clips, and extra storage pockets.

Plan on using ice packs instead of loose ice

Using molded ice packs is a water-friendly alternative to fresh ice. Ice packs can be reused and will avoid possible leakage as they defrost. Keep an eye out for coolers that are designed to use with specific ice packs or have room inside to fit an ice pack.

Look for padded straps and versatile carrying options

Coolers with comfortable and thoughtful carrying features — such as padded straps, adjustable straps, and multi-carry options — can make or break your experience with a cooler bag, especially as you get into larger capacity sizes.

Consider which opening and closure shape and style is best for you

Think about the situations you envision using your cooler bag for. Consider how and where you will want to access the contents of your cooler bag, whether you’ll have a solid flat surface to set it down on, and any portability needs you may have, and choose styles with the most beneficial shapes, materials, overall look, and access points for your needs.

The answer depends on your specific conditions and needs. Hard coolers are known for having better durability in rugged scenarios and providing longer ice retention than soft, insulated cooler bags. Hard coolers are best for lengthy trips like camping, while insulated cooler bags are better for portability and organization.

Finding a leakproof cooler bag is key for preventing spills and for temperature retention. Lower-end cooler bags are less likely to be equipped with water-tight, leakproof zippers and closures. If you’re concerned about leaks, make sure to pick cooler bags with explicitly leakproof closures and lining.

When using fresh ice, the minimum suggested amount of ice to use is a 50/50 split, though it truly depends on what’s inside and how and where you’ll be using the cooler. The higher the ratio of ice, the longer the cooler will retain cool temperatures. Some manufacturers advise filling the cooler with two-thirds ice and one-third contents.

If you are heading out on a road trip, a travel cooler will keep your food and drinks chilled along the way. Whether you choose a basic model that will keep your lunch cool or a cooler that’s big enough to get the party started, mobile refrigeration is the way forward for great days out and long nights spent under the stars.

Travel Cooler

Being able to keep your food cold, and therefore safe to eat, on the go is the biggest benefit to buying a travel cooler, but there are other great reasons to consider getting one, too:

  • Upgrading from a traditional insulated picnic basket or lunch pack will reduce the risk of you having to deal with messy containers , melted ice packs, and other inconveniences along the way.
  • Never buy ice again — simply make your own and take it with you instead. A good quality cooler will help you chill enough drinks and snacks to keep all the family well-fed and refreshed when the temperature rises.
  • Save money by stocking up on snacks when you leave home. This also helps with special dietary requirements, calorie counting, or other preferences you may have as you will know exactly what is in your food at all times.
  • As an additional bonus, your new travel cooler can also be used to keep medicines cool , meaning that your insulin or other temperature-controlled medication won’t be at risk on the road.

Travel Cooler Capacity

The capacity of a cooler is often measured by the number of drink cans it can hold, as well as the extra ice needed to keep them cool. The internal capacity is, in many ways, much more important than the exterior dimensions, unless you have a very specific space to fill while transporting your cooler.

Smaller personal coolers may only have the capacity to hold between 6 to 8 cans, while huge party coolers can hold 50, 60, or sometimes more, plus ice. Keep in mind that the number of cans they can hold often relates to cans packed tightly together, and if you max out on beverages, you may not have the extra space needed to carry snacks or other essentials.

Hot Tip: Remember that the volume of the storage size can relate to both the insulated and non-insulated areas of the cooler, meaning that 50 quarts of storage may not mean that the entire internal space is available to be used for cooled items.

Travel Cooler Insulation

Depending on your budget and individual requirements, there are different types of insulation that will keep your food and drinks cool on the go. The 2 main types are:

  • Polystyrene — The most effective insulation that money can buy, this cheap, plastic lightweight material is very bad at transferring heat, meaning that your gear stays cooler for longer. As a general rule of thumb, the thicker the walls of polystyrene are, the better the insulation will be. This kind of insulation can keep stuff cold for days on end, making high-end hard coolers more suitable for trips away and longer stays.
  • Foam — Usually found in soft-sided coolers, a foam lining can work well if you need to chill your items for just a few hours at a time. Perfect for lunch packs and days out, foam is effective for short-term chilling, but not as effective as the far superior polystyrene.

Portability

Travel Cooler Portability

It goes without saying that hard coolers will be heavier to carry and bulkier to store than their soft-sided counterparts. Many of the larger coolers on the market will come with superstrong handles, often on both sides, making them easier to carry as a team effort.

With smaller coolers and soft-sided models, portability is easier as they come complete with shoulder straps, backpack straps, or grab handles, and their lightweight design means that they can be easily transported, even when full.

Materials and Durability

Travel Cooler Material

Rotomolded hard coolers are incredibly sought after by those who like to enjoy a bit of camping, fishing, and other outdoor pursuits. Made to be virtually indestructible, these types of coolers can last for many years and easily cope with the bumps and knocks of constant traveling.

Soft coolers, on the other hand, don’t need to be quite as indestructible, but should still offer tear-proof, waterproof exteriors, as well as washable and leakproof interiors that feature FDA-approved lining material.

Travel Cooler Features

Some of the coolers on our list come with delightfully useful additional features that you may never even know you needed. These could include clip-on tables that transform your cooler into an instant bar, handy little cup holders, lids that double up as seating areas, and even fish-measuring rulers for all you anglers out there.

Some of the bigger travel cooler brands offer extended warranties with their coolers. Expensive to buy and often manufactured using the very best materials, it is a safe bet that these types of coolers will last many years if used respectfully. As a rough guide:

  • Coleman  — up to 6 years, depending on the exact model purchased
  • Igloo — 1- to 5-year warranty, depending on the exact model purchased
  • ORCA — 5 years from the date of purchase
  • RovR — 1- to 5-year warranty, depending on the model purchased
  • YETI — 3- to 5-year warranty, depending on the model purchased

With the soft alternatives, most will offer a warranty of around 12 months only.

Hot Tip: Ensure that your cooler purchase is protected from theft, damage, or accidental loss with coverage provided by the best credit cards for purchase protection . If getting the most out of your warranty is important to you, check out the best credit cards for extended warranty coverage .

YETI Hardside and Softside Coolers

Soft Coolers

A soft-sided cooler is perfect for keeping your beverages chilled and will be able to hold enough for all of the family, without weighing you down. Unlike a regular soft-sided lunch bag, many modern-day coolers are “super” coolers with the ability to keep your food and drink much cooler for far longer.

Often insulated using high-density foam, soft-sided coolers are also incredibly portable and can be carried using a shoulder strap or even worn like a backpack. With a fabric or vinyl exterior and a lined interior, they are also easy to wipe clean or wash when needed. More expensive models come with thermally-efficient zippers to keep the cool in.

Although most soft-sided coolers may have a smaller capacity than their hard-sided counterparts, they are lightweight and easy to use daily.

Bottom Line: Soft-sided coolers can collapse down and fold up, making them easy to keep at home or in the car when not in use.

Hard Coolers

By contrast, hard-sided coolers have increased capacity and the ability to keep a wide range of food and drink cool and safely contained on the go. With additional features including freezer-grade lids, easy-to-clean interiors, and drains to quickly empty melted ice, these types of coolers are designed for more hardcore adventures and really thirsty adventurers.

Hard-sided coolers also offer better ice retention and are usually made from hard, rotomolded plastic, making them incredibly resistant to bumps and knocks along the way. While the increased capacity is also useful, the downside to these types of coolers is obviously the weight and restrictions in portability.

Bottom Line: You will need to carry your hard cooler in your car or another vehicle. If you are going all out for a group activity or celebration, you may need 2 people to carry it or even consider one that has its very own wheels.

To make the most of your new cooler, you will need to know how to load it properly. Here are some top tips to maximizing the efficiency of your cooler:

Pre-Cool Your Cooler

It goes without saying that a warm or room temperature cooler will be less efficient than a cold one. If you are using a hard cooler, fill it with ice the night before you plan to pack it.

Pre-Chill Your Contents

It is much more efficient to try and keep cold or frozen contents chilled than it is to cool room temperature ones. With this in mind, refrigerate or freeze your items before you pack them .

Add More Ice

The preferred ice-to-contents ratio is 2:1 , so anticipate that you will need more ice than you originally thought you would. Sprinkling a bit of ice on the top of the cooler will not keep your items cold, so add more.

Also, not all ice is equal. The ice from your refrigerator, for example, is not as cold as ice from a commercial ice maker. Dry ice mixed with regular cubed ice is the very best combination, if you can buy it.

Avoid air gaps by filling your cooler to capacity where possible. If you run out of food and drink items, use more ice instead, or fill the space with towels or paper to prevent the melting process from speeding up.

Coleman Cooler | Steel-Belted Cooler

Dimensions: 26 x 17 x 17 inches

Weight: 2.25 pounds

A modern take on a classic design, the Coleman 54-Quart Steel-Belted Cooler is as iconic now as when it was first released back in 1954. Offering an incredible 85-can capacity, this supercool cooler is also tall enough to hold a 2-liter bottle upright, making it much more spacious than many of its competitors.

Ice packs are lightweight, convenient, easy to use, and perfect for keeping your food and snacks cool.

While all ice packs are pretty much designed to do the same thing, there are a few differences in the way in which they keep your food cold.

Water-Based Ice Packs

Some icepacks contain water mixed with propylene glycol, thickening agents, silica gel, and a non-toxic coloring. This heady mix of liquids has been specially blended to allow for faster freezing and slower melting to keep your perishables icy cold for longer.

Gel-Based Ice Packs

Filled with easy-to-freeze gel, these types of cooling packs are covered in heavy-duty, puncture-proof plastic that won’t leak, even in extreme temperatures.

Flexible and easy to mold to the shape of your lunch bag or backpack, these types of ice packs take up very little room in your freezer and can provide many hours of icy-cold freshness for your food and drinks.

The very best ice packs can be used time and time again and can be wiped clean between uses. Both hard, solid ice packs and flexible gel packs can be frozen and refrozen time and time again.

Freeze Time

Most ice packs will need between 2 to 6 hours to become fully frozen . If you pop your ice pack in the freezer overnight, it should be frozen solid for your daytime adventures. While certain types of ice packs may freeze quicker than others, your ice pack will need to be fully frozen to allow for a slower release to keep your perishables cold on the go.

The specially formulated fillings in both gel and water ice packs are both designed to stay colder for longer than regular ice would. Most packs can stay frozen for an impressive 24 to 36 hours in an insulated cooler container and work best when paired with thermally-insulated coolers.

Ice packs used in an environment that aren’t fully sealed and insulated (like a lunch pack, for example) may only stay cold for between 6 to 8 hours, and ice packs left out in the open may only be effective for as little as 3 or 4 hours at a time.

🧐 Things To Consider While Buying The Best Insulated Cooler Bags [Buying Guide]

When searching for the best insulated cooler bags, there are several key factors to consider to ensure that you choose a product that suits your needs. These bags are handy for keeping food and beverages cool during picnics, camping trips, beach outings, or even just for grocery shopping. Here’s a buying guide to help you make an informed decision:

  • Size and Capacity : Consider how much storage space you need. Cooler bags come in various sizes, from small lunch bags to large picnic totes. Think about the number of people you’ll be catering to and the items you want to carry.
  • Insulation : Look for a cooler bag with effective insulation. Insulation materials like closed-cell foam, high-density foam, or thick layers of insulation help maintain the internal temperature. Check the bag’s ability to keep items cold or hot for an extended period.
  • Material : Cooler bags are often made from materials like nylon, polyester, or vinyl. Ensure that the bag’s exterior is durable, water-resistant, and easy to clean. Look for a leak-proof liner to prevent any spills.
  • Zippers and Closures : Quality zippers and closures are essential to maintain the temperature inside the bag and prevent any heat exchange. YKK zippers are known for their durability.
  • Portability : Check for comfortable and adjustable shoulder straps or handles for easy transport. Some cooler bags have extra features like backpack-style straps, making them more convenient for longer walks.
  • Pockets and Compartments : Extra pockets can be handy for carrying utensils, napkins, or small items. Look for bags with zippered or mesh pockets for better organization.
  • Durability : The bag should be able to withstand rough handling, especially if you plan to use it for outdoor activities. Reinforced stitching and robust construction are important for long-lasting use.
  • Easy Cleaning : Insulated bags can get messy, so choose one that is easy to clean. Removable and washable liners can be a big advantage.
  • Weight and Foldability : A lightweight cooler bag is easier to carry. If you have limited storage space, consider bags that can be folded for compact storage when not in use.
  • Price and Budget : Cooler bags come in a wide price range. Determine your budget and find a bag that offers the best value for your money. Keep in mind that a higher upfront cost might be justified by better insulation and durability.
  • Brand Reputation : Research and read reviews about different brands and models. Well-known brands are more likely to provide quality and customer support.
  • Use Case : Consider your intended use. If you’re carrying food for a day trip, a smaller bag might suffice. For extended camping trips, a larger, heavy-duty cooler bag might be more suitable.
  • Warranty : Some cooler bag manufacturers offer warranties. Check if the product you’re interested in has a warranty, as it can provide peace of mind.
  • Cooling Method : Some cooler bags use ice packs, gel packs, or ice substitutes to maintain temperature. Ensure that the bag you choose aligns with your preferred cooling method.

By considering these factors and your specific needs, you can find the best insulated cooler bag to keep your food and drinks fresh and at the right temperature during your outdoor adventures.

High-density foam, numerous layers of insulation, and heat-sealed liners are features that assist in keeping the bag’s interior cold for a long time.

6 Best Coolers of 2024

Hard and soft options for camping, entertaining and chilling out.

6 best coolers you can buy in 2023, according to testing

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

The best coolers will keep your food and drinks cold for hours, whether you're entertaining friends in the backyard , spending a day by the water in your beach chair or enjoying the great outdoors with your favorite camping gear in tow.

Some coolers hold ice or ice packs to cool food and beverages down, some provide insulation to help retain the temperature of chilled items — and some do both. They come in an assortment of styles, including hard coolers and soft coolers, with both small and large capacities, and can be narrowed down even further into more specific categories. For example, there are coolers with wheels for transporting lots of snacks and beverages to the beach, backpack-style versions for going on outdoor hikes and small soft versions with a strap attached for day trips in the car.

Our experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab have tested more than 85 coolers in the past decade . In our most recent side-by-side cooler test, we assessed the coolers' ice and temperature retention, how well they resisted odors and how easy they were to use and clean . Here's what we found.

At the end of this guide, you can read more about how we test and choose the best coolers, plus everything you need to know about when shopping for the perfect cooler for your needs. Looking for more ways to keep your food and beverages insulated? Check out our guides to the best water bottles and the best adult lunch boxes .

The Igloo ECOCOOL Trailmate scored highest overall in our most recent cooler testing. It steadily maintained the temperature of soda cans for 36 hours — and even kept most of the ice intact . It was easy to move around when full and is designed to handle all kinds of terrain with its oversize wheels. It has a sturdy base and remains steady when parked. The company states that the cooler is made with postconsumer recycled materials — specifically, 98% of the lid and body plastic and 48% of the liner — one of the first coolers to use recycled materials.

This hard cooler is packed with useful features, such as a telescoping handle and a removable container for storing dry goods. It also includes a ridged tray — with two built-in drink holders — that stores inside the lid and is designed to be placed directly on top of the cooler's sturdy handle after it's been extended outward. The lid comes equipped with four built-in drink cups, and it even has detachable umbrella holders. In addition to all of these handy features, it opens easily (and to the right, versus up and to the back like most coolers) and seals without any pesky latches. The one downside is the location of the cooler's drain plug, which makes it tricky to empty and clean. Instead of the drain plug being positioned on the very bottom of the cooler, it's located just above it, so fully emptying the cooler was a challenge. It's also a little more expensive than the regular Igloo Trailmate Journey 70-Quart Cooler .

This small soft cooler with a hard interior — yes, you read that right; it's a combo that's lightweight but still holds its shape — had extremely good temperature control. After 36 hours, the soda cans dropped only 6 degrees from when they were first placed inside the cooler. However, 90% of the ice had melted when testing was complete. It can hold up to 48 cans without ice, and it weighs about 44 pounds when fully packed with just cans. The hard liner is removable for easy cleaning.

It has a zipper-free design for easy access and opens and closes with the help of a Velcro-style hook-and-loop connection. It's equipped with a strap, which makes it easier to carry, as well as two handles on either side — helpful if you want two people to carry it when it's full. There's no user manual included, but additional features include a perforated tray that spans the length of the cooler to keep some goods separated, several pockets on the outside and bungees on top to help control loose items like napkins.

Of all the soft coolers we tested, this one, from Polar Bear Coolers, performed the best. It even performed just as well as some of the hard coolers we tested , which typically do better than soft coolers . The soda cans got seven degrees colder over 36 hours and maintained a temperature of 33˚F. It's easy to pack and can fit 30 soda cans without ice. When filled with cans and no ice, its maximum weight is less than 30 pounds. The handle on top (hence the name Topper) makes it relatively easy to carry; plus, it comes with a detachable shoulder strap, though we didn't find it that comfortable.

We appreciate the included instructions that describe how to prep the cooler and subsequently care for it. And the zipper comes with zipper lubricant that you apply to help maintain smooth opening and closing. It's radio frequency–welded (a.k.a. the plastic pieces are essentially melted together to create a better seal), which helps prevent leaks inside and out and it even floats if you need it to. Even though we noticed a slight odor after cleaning, we found the cleanup process to be simple.

The Tundra Haul is YETI's first cooler with wheels, which many will appreciate, since it can exceed 100 pounds when full. You can pack it up to its capacity and still be able to move it around your backyard or your favorite park for a family barbecue.

It boasts 65 quarts and can fit 83 cans without ice . In our tests, it had excellent temperature control and was able to maintain a temperature of 33˚F for 36 hours. (The cans were put in the cooler at a starting temperature of around 40˚F.) That's pretty much perfect for ensuring that your drinks and burger toppings stay cool on a hot summer day.

The Tundra Haul is rotomolded, which means it's made from one piece of material, a design that contributes to high quality and durability. It's easy to open, thanks to its rubber latches, versus traditional plastic ones or buckles. Plus, it has a food crate to help keep the inside organized. The handle is oversize, and it can be operated with one hand or two. When it's not extended and ready for use, it folds flat against the cooler.

The cooler is a breeze to clean, partly because the drain plug is located in between the wheels. Just tip the cooler up and pour out excess liquids. It comes with a user maintenance manual that provides instructions on first use and includes directions for cleaning and care.

This rotomolded cooler (made from one piece of material), is strong and durable. It can hold up to 64 cans with ice and comes with a food bin that latches with rubber hooks , which is key when you're camping and cooking in the wilderness so you can keep your dry goods out of the ice in the bottom of the cooler.

It's thick and durable with large handles for carrying, though we recommend that two people carry it together when moving it on your campsite — or that you opt to leave it in your car, since it doesn't have wheels and can weigh around 110 pounds when filled with the maximum capacity of cans, according to testing.

In our tests, it had great temperature retention, and plenty of ice was left over after 36 hours. Our testers also liked that it has two drains that allow you to release melted ice from either side, depending on how the cooler is sloped and where it's placed.

Pro Large Collapsible Backpack Cooler

IceMule's Pro Large Collapsible Backpack Cooler is comfortable to wear and can fit up to 18 cans of soda with ice. This backpack is uniquely designed: There isn't a zipper; you just fold down the opening and use a buckle to keep it fastened. There's also an air valve that you breathe into, which creates extra insulation . In fact, in our Lab tests, the interior temperature went up only 1.98 degrees and stayed under 40˚F during the entire 14-hour testing period.

When you're ready to store this backpack cooler, you simply reverse the bag to empty out the air and fold up the bag. According to the brand, it's 100% waterproof and can even float, but we haven't tested that claim yet. There are also bungee cords on the front to help control loose items, such as a water bottle.

How we test coolers

best coolers tested by the good housekeeping institute april 2022 photographed in the lab

The Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab tests coolers by recording how long each model stays cold in a controlled setting that mimics real-life use:

  • In our most recent side-by-side cooler test, we evaluated 22 coolers and Lab-tested 15 of them . For each cooler, we assessed ease of loading and unloading, cleaning and transporting. We also evaluated the helpfulness of the user guide, if one was included.

a variety of coolers with thermocouples inside to measure temperature

  • To test this batch of 15, we filled each cooler with a comparable ice-to-can ratio of one third cans to two-thirds ice . We then placed a thermocouple (a highly sensitive scientific thermometer) inside one soda can in each cooler and connected the cans to a data logger to record the temperature every 15 minutes over a total of 36 hours .

documenting temperatures of coolers

  • From there, we assessed each cooler's ability to maintain temperature at 12 hours and 36 hours. We also used this test to determine how easy the coolers were to pack.
  • Once every cooler was completely loaded, we carried the coolers around to see which were the easiest to travel with.

a cooler being weighed during testing

  • We also weighed the coolers to determine how heavy they were after being filled up to their capacity with cans and ice.
  • After unpacking the coolers and assessing their drain spouts, we tested their cleanability and ability to resist odor by making a mess: W e spilled soda in each cooler, tossed in half an onion and let the mixture sit for a day. Then we washed the coolers with soap and water to see how well they cleaned up and if they still smelled like onion.
  • Overall, we collected more than 1,800 data points to determine which coolers would best withstand a typical day of use (and longer).

Which cooler holds ice the longest?

a rtic cooler filled with ice and soda cans during testing

According to our testing, the RTIC 65-Quart Hard Cooler held the largest amount of ice after two days of testing . It had some water, but ice probably could have lasted another day or two with the amount that was left.

However, most of our picks, like the Igloo ECOCOOL Trailmate and the YETI Tundra Haul , retained a good amount of ice. If this is important to you, we recommend purchasing a hard cooler, which retained ice the best in our tests. We did find that the Polar Bear Coolers Topper 20 retained ice better than any other soft cooler we tested.

What to look for when shopping for the best coolers

line break

Keep these pointers in mind as you start to narrow down your search for the best cooler for your needs:

✔️ Style and temperature retention: Take note of the differences between these two options:

  • Hard coolers are the better choice for campers, outdoor adventure trips that last more than one day and holding a lot of goods. They're generally made of durable double-walled plastic and/or foam insulation and are designed to keep contents cold for days.
  • Soft coolers are great options for picnics, work lunches or day hikes. Most models are made of easy-to-clean shells and lined with insulating nylon for food safety. They're designed to keep food cold for up to one day.

✔️ Capacity: Coolers are available in a range of sizes, from a five-quart cooler to carry your lunch to a 125-quart cooler that's large enough to hold more than 200 cans. Because a large-capacity cooler can get quite heavy, consider buying one on wheels — or even two smaller coolers (one for drinks and one for food) for easier transport.

✔️ Portability: These days, cooler companies are starting to attach wheels to their hard coolers. This allows individuals to take these big, heavy coolers and maneuver and manipulate them easily and safely. Look for soft coolers with padded shoulder straps or backpack-style attachments, both of which can make carrying easier.

✔️ Construction: If you're a more experienced cooler shopper or someone who's really done their homework, you've likely seen the term "rotomolded," which means a hard cooler has been built from one continuous piece of plastic. This type of construction makes it more durable, with fewer places for the cooler to potentially leak over time. When shopping for soft coolers, look for watertight seals around the zippers.

✔️ Accessories: Many large hard coolers come equipped with dry bins for keeping goods dry and away from ice. Other features to look for include dividers that work within the ice to create individual sections, drink holders on the lid, umbrella holders and can openers. For soft coolers, we like to have at least a couple of carrying options: short handles and a long strap, plus pockets.

What type of cooler should I buy?

line break

It depends on which activities you'd like to use your cooler for . Here's a quick guide:

  • Soft cooler: These are ideal for day trips, like having a small, leisurely picnic in a beautiful locale or spending a sunny day at the beach. Soft coolers are good to have on long drives as well. Most come with handles for easy carrying. In general, though, soft coolers don't hold ice as well as hard coolers.
  • Backpack cooler: If you're going on a long hike or kayak ride, backpack coolers are handy. They help ensure that your hands are free to hold a walking stick or paddle, and they can usually hold other equipment as needed, such as water bottles or sunscreen. These coolers aren't intended to hold a large number of items, but they're great for keeping your drinks and a sandwich or two cold.
  • Hard cooler: Ideal for storing in your car or trailer while camping or setting out on your deck for easy access while you barbecue, hard coolers have good ice retention capabilities and varying capacities. Keep in mind that a large model will be very heavy once filled and will need to stay in place or be moved by two people.
  • Hard cooler with wheels: A cooler with wheels makes transportation easy. Whether you're walking down to the beach or going on a camping trip, you don't have to worry about hurting your back or finding a friend to help you carry it. Since coolers with wheels are often made out of a hard material, they retain ice and temperature well. One downside is that some designs can take up storage room inside the cooler and make them a little harder to pack.

Questions and Answers

Why trust southern living.

Southern Living / Eric Brockob

If you don’t want to invest in a hard-sided cooler , or maybe you need something more compact for on-the-go use, a cooler bag is a great choice. They come in numerous styles and designs and allow you to carry them like a tote, shoulder bag, or backpack. “Soft coolers offer more portability and are typically more comfortable to carry on the go,” says Hannah Mara , vice president of product management for YETI. Cooler bags give you more space while road tripping, but also allow you to still remain mobile while camping, hiking, and spending time on the water. “Soft coolers tend to weigh less, have more flexibility, and are easier for individuals to manage on their own,” says Mara.

To compile this list, we took factors like ice retention, size, capacity, weight, and carrying style into consideration, even testing several of the options on this list over several weeks. We realize that some consumers want a larger cooler bag than can carry as many cans as possible, while others need a simple design that will keep a six-pack cold for hours, so you’ll find a variety of cooler bags on our list. Mara also weighed in with expert insight on what to look for in a cooler bag.

Best Overall Cooler Bag

Rtic insulated soft cooler bag.

Ice retention rivals more expensive options

Durable outer shell and tear-resistant liner

Smooth, leakproof zipper

Floats in water

Zipper can be hard to pull

Lightweight, durable, affordable, and leakproof, RTIC’s Soft Pack Cooler has it all. It comes in 12-, 20-, 30-, and 40-can sizes, so you’re sure to find a size to accommodate your needs. It’s made with a heavy-duty nylon outer shell that works well on sand, the trail, or any terrain you may encounter. And 2 inches of closed-cell foam on the inside combined with a puncture and tear-resistant liner keeps drinks and food cold for up to 24 hours, all with no leaks. When we we filled both this cooler and the YETI Hopper with ice and left them in a covered area for four hours, the ice in both coolers remained mostly solid, and there was no discernible difference between the two.

A bonus feature we love? The cooler floats, so your drinks and food can join you in the lake or pool. Plus, the leakproof zipper keeps liquids sealed inside, although it can require some effort to unzip (although it was still smoother than the Hopper's zipper) . The wide opening also makes the cooler easy to pack and unpack. It also comes with a removable carrying strap and a zippered pocket on the front. Use it for road trips, camping, beach days, lunches, and more. Numerous colors and patterns are available.

Style: Tote/shoulder strap | Capacity: 12, 20, 30, or 40 cans | Dimensions: Varies | Weight: Varies | Ice Retention: 24 hours

Best Budget Cooler Bag

Coleman chiller soft-sided portable cooler.

Holds up to 30 cans

Includes several pockets for storing ice packs and other essentials

Removable plastic insert for easy cleaning

Ice retention is less than most cooler bags on our list

Only comes in two colors

If you don’t plan on using your cooler bag every weekend, this choice from Coleman is great for the price. It can keep your drinks cold for 12 hours or more and will hold 30 standard cans.

We liked the removable plastic liner that helps to protect the contents of the cooler and makes cleanup a breeze in the event of a spill. The elastic bands along the top of the cooler are great for securing paper plates and other items you don't want to jam into a cooler bag.

There’s a main zippered compartment that opens up wide and zippered front and inside mesh pockets for storing ice packs and other essentials. The welded seams also ensure the cooler is completely leakproof. We did notice some loose threads along the seams, but the seams themselves still felt secure.

If you prefer a smaller bag for lunches or short trips, the Chiller also comes in a 9-can size and a 16-can size . Carry it by the side handles or use the adjustable strap, which allows you to transport the cooler more comfortably when it’s full. As of right now, it’s only available in blue and black, so we would like to see more colors available in the future.

Style: Shoulder bag | Capacity: 30 cans | Dimensions: 13 x 13.2 x 11 inches | Weight: 2.2 pounds | Ice Retention: 12 hours

Best Backpack Cooler

Hydroflask soft backpack cooler.

Includes backpack straps for comfortable carrying

Stands unsupported on its own

Tough polyester shell that's lightweight and waterproof

The top opening is a bit narrow

For a hands-free way to haul drinks and snacks from your car to the beach , a backpack cooler is a great choice. We love HydroFlask’s 20-liter backpack cooler for numerous reasons. First, it keeps things cold for 36 hours—longer than most other cooler bags on this list. It will also hold 36 cans without ice, and the padded mesh back and straps add comfort when carrying. The backpack’s exterior is a tough polyester shell that’s lightweight but also waterproof, and the watertight zipper keeps water out and helps prevent leaks.

Loops on the sides of the backpacks allow you to attach gear and accessories to the cooler to free up your hands, and the sternum strap and carry handles help you out in case you’re trekking the cooler a long distance. The backpack will stand unsupported on its own, which helps when you’re trying to load it down with drinks and snacks. Two colors are available, and the entire backpack is made from BPA-free materials.

Style: Backpack | Capacity: 36 cans | Dimensions: 18.1 x 18.5 x 8.5 inches | Weight: 2.6 pounds | Ice Retention: 36 hours

Best Cooler Tote

Orca walker tote.

Includes magnetic split handle and a shoulder strap

Holds 18 cans or multiple wine bottles

RF welding and tough outer materials for moisture protection

Small compared to other bags on our list

A bit of a smaller option on this list, we still love the Walker Tote from ORCA for numerous reasons. It holds up to 18 cans or multiple wine bottles (standing upright). It also comes with a comfortable, padded shoulder strap for hands-free carrying or a split handle that magnetically sticks together if you want to carry it by hand. Waterproof inner and front pockets allow you to stow your keys, phone, wallet, and other belongings inside and away from water, and the tough bottom pad adds extra strength and protection.

The Walker Tote has insulated inner walls that keep things cold for 24 hours, and the tough outer material, coupled with RF welding (the same used for whitewater crafts), provides added moisture protection. And the top zipper, while not a wraparound zipper, still opens up wide for easy access to drinks and snacks. Take it to the beach, a barbecue, or on a picnic for ice cold drinks all day long. Four different color options are available.

Style: Tote | Capacity: 18 cans | Dimensions: 15.3 x 15 x 9.5 inches | Weight: 3.6 pounds | Ice Retention: 24 hours

Best Beach Cooler Bag

Orca walker 20-can soft cooler.

Wraparound, waterproof zipper

Tough outer shell

Comes with bungee straps, D-rings, and loops

Zipper can be tough to open

The Walker 20 holds 20 cans and comes with magnetic split handles and a padded shoulder strap, like the Walker Tote. It also has the tough bottom skid pad, welded construction, and insulated walls that hold ice for about 24 hours.

We chose this one as the best beach pick because of the durable outer shell that holds its own against sand and the waterproof zipper that keeps moisture out. This zipper is a wraparound zipper too, making it easier to access cans and food within. The Walker 20 also has an added bungee strap to easily connect it to your canoe or kayak, plus D-rings and loops to clip on accessories and your keys. The cooler is BPA-free, food safe, and can hold up to 50 pounds of weight. Four color options are available.

Style: Shoulder bag/tote | Capacity: 20 cans | Dimensions : 13.3 x 14.5 x 11 inches | Weight: 3.6 pounds | Ice Retention: 24 hours

Best Collapsible Cooler Bag

Rei co-op pack-away 24 soft cooler.

Folds down flat when not in use

Adjustable shoulder strap

Wide opening for easy filling

Condensation can accumulate on the liner of the bag

Trying to save space in your car while traveling? We love this collapsible choice from REI, as it folds down flat when you don’t need it. When you’re ready to add your beverages, just use the side clips to expand it to hold up to 24 cans with ice. The top zipper opens wide for easy filling, and the seam-sealed liner is leakproof and easy to clean. The exterior shell is made from polyester that stands up to the outdoors, and an abrasion-resistant, recycled nylon material helps prevent wear and tear, too. Carry it by the attached straps or the padded, adjustable shoulder strap to free up your hands. An added outer pocket includes a key ring to store your car keys, and daisy chains allow you to attach accessories and gear. REI uses recycled materials for this cooler bag for a touch of sustainability.

Style: Shoulder bag/tote | Capacity: 24 cans | Dimensions: 15 x 11 x 10 inches | Weight: 1.8 pounds | Ice Retention: 32 hours

Best Waterproof Cooler Bag

Icemule classic collapsible backpack cooler.

Comes with a backpack strap for hands-free carrying

Zipperless, roll-top closure keeps water out

There isn’t a lot of structure to the bag

Designed like a dry bag with a roll-top closure, this cooler bag from IceMule is made with welded (not sewn) seams that keep water out. It’s also zipperless, so once the cooler bag is full, simply roll the top down over itself, then secure the buckles together to keep the bag closed. This bag also floats, a win in case you drop it in the water.

An included air valve allows you to add air into the cooler to help with insulation and floatability, or take air out to make more room in the cooler if needed. When you’re not using the cooler, it lays flat or rolls up for easy storage. It comes with a backpack-style strap, so you can sling it over your shoulder and go hands-free, and the tough exterior shell holds up at the beach, lake, or on the trail. Interior insulation helps ice hold for 24 hours, and numerous color options are available, as well as multiple sizes.

Style: Backpack | Capacity: 12, 16, or 20 cans | Dimensions: 22 x 9 x 9 inches; 22 x 10.3 x 10.3 inches; or 22 x 11.5 x 11.5 inches | Weight: 1.6, 1.8, or 2.1 pounds | Ice Retention: 24 hours

Best Cooler Bag for Lunches

Yeti lunch box.

Insulated interior keeps food cold for hours

Wraparound zipper and magnetic closure

Leakproof lining

Available in over a dozen colors

Pricey for a lunch bag

It might seem simple in design, but the YETI Daytrip Lunch Box is great to have on hand for lunches or a few hours at the pool. It has a wraparound zipper and a magnetic closure to help keep the cold in, so your food stays fresh for longer.

Closed-cell foam insulation also keeps things cold, and a water-resistant exterior protects from splashes. The interior liner is also leakproof, so if the contents accidentally spill inside, you won’t have to worry about them leaking through to the exterior. Simply wipe it clean and you’re good to go. All materials used inside are food safe, so rest easy knowing your fruits, veggies, and other items are safe. Plus, it’s available in 17 vibrant colors, including Alpine Yellow, Nordic Purple, and more.

Style: Lunch box | Capacity: 5 cans | Dimensions: 4.6 x 10.7 x 8.7 inches | Weight: 1 pound | Ice Retention: Hours (not specified)

Best Cooler Bag for Groceries

Nook theory insulated grocery bag.

Can keep over 30 pounds of groceries cool for six hours

Foldable when not in use

Two side pockets for organization

No key loops or interior pockets

Designed for use as a grocery store bag, Nook Theory’s insulated bag can hold over 30 pounds of groceries and will keep cool for around six hours in case you need to run some errands after grocery shopping. The bag has a sturdy base to help you organize its contents, and it’s foldable so you can store it easily when not in use. Grab a few of them to store in the car to make grocery shopping a breeze (and feel better knowing you’re not using single-use plastic bags).

The exterior is made of a scratch-resistant canvas material that comes in lots of colors, and the interior is made with thermal foam that is leakproof and designed to keep things cold for hours. There are two side pockets as well, which also help with organization and a bit of added space. The front and back handles are long enough to use the bag as a tote, or throw it over your shoulder as a shoulder bag.

Style: Tote | Capacity: 40 cans | Dimensions: 13 x 16 x 9 inches | Weight: 12 ounces | Ice Retention: 6 hours

Best Cooler Bag for Wine

Tirrinia 2-bottle wine carrier.

Tall enough to accommodate four standard wine bottles

Comes with dividers to keep the bottles from breaking

Elastic strap inside the lid holds a wine bottle opener

No external pockets

Not the longest ice retention

Lots of cooler bags aren’t tall enough for bottles of wine, but this one is made specifically to cart your wine to parties, the lake, a picnic, and more. It will hold four standard wine bottles, and comes with a divider to keep the bottles separated and prevent them from bumping into each other and possibly breaking. You can also take the divider out and use the bag to store other items if you wish.

The interior is made with thermal foam, which not only protects your wine bottles, but insulates the cooler to keep wine chilled (for about three hours in our experience). It’s also leakproof, so you don’t have to worry about any leakage while on the go. Carry it by the top handle, or attach the shoulder strap and carry it over your shoulder. An elastic strap inside the lid holds a wine bottle opener for when it’s time to get the party started.

Style: Shoulder bag | Capacity : 4 wine bottles or 15 cans | Dimensions: 13.5 x 8 x 7 inches | Weight: 1.3 pounds | Ice Retention: Hours (not specified)

Best Cooler Bag for Cans

Yeti hopper flip.

Keeps cans cold all day

Leakproof zipper

Tough outer shell holds up to punctures and UV rays

Detachable shoulder strap frees up your hands

The zipper is hard to pull

You always want your canned beverages as cold as possible, and the Hopper will keep them ice cold all day, depending on weather and how often the cooler is being left open. The Hopper comes with ColdCell insulation, a closed-cell foam that keeps food and beverages cold for much longer than standard cooler bags. “I’ve brought my Hopper Flip to the pool and the beach for up to eight hours, and it’s always kept canned drinks chilled the entire time,” says Melanie Fincher, Southern Living commerce editor.

It’s also leakproof with a HydroLok zipper that keeps the cold in, although it does require you to pull pretty hard to get it all the way around the opening. The outer fabric is made to hold up against punctures and UV rays, and the exterior shell is waterproof, so it will hold up for days spent camping, at the beach, and more. Carry it by the side handles, top handle, or the detachable shoulder strap if you need to free up your hands. The Hopper Flip also has front and back hitch points, making it easy for you to attach your keys, carabiners, bottle openers, and more. In addition to the 12-can size, it’s also available in 8-can and 18-can versions.

Style: Shoulder bag | Capacity: 24 cans | Dimensions: 12 x 14.3 x 10.7 inches | Weight: 3 pounds | Ice Retention: Days (not specified)

Best Compact Cooler Bag

Mountainsmith the sixer cooler bag.

Can accommodate six cans, six bottles, or two growlers

Compact design

Internal mesh storage pocket and front and back stash pockets

Canvas exterior isn’t as durable as other materials

If you don’t need a large cooler and are just trying to keep a six pack cold, the Mountainsmith Sixer is great, as it doesn’t take up a lot of room and snugly holds six cans, six bottles, or two growlers. We love that the height of this bag can accommodate growlers, and the internal mesh storage pocket provides organization for keys, credit cards, and more. It also has front and back stash pockets, too, for even more storage. You can carry the cooler bag by the dual-rope handle, or attach the shoulder strap and carry it that way.

A waterproof, seam-sealed liner prevents leaks and is easy to clean in case there’s a spill, and foam insulation keeps your drinks ice cold. The opening is a wraparound zipper that makes it easy to access. The bag is available in three neutral color options.

Style: Shoulder bag | Capacity: 12 cans | Dimensions: 11 x 11 x 6 inches | Weight: 1.1 pounds | Ice Retention: Not listed

Best Large-Capacity Cooler Bag

Engel heavy-duty soft sided cooler bag.

Holds up to 48 cans

Welded construction keeps items cold for days

Padded shoulder strap

The zipper requires lubrication

You won’t find any stitching here, as this cooler bag from Engel is welded rather than sewn together, meaning there’ll be no air or water leaks. The welded build also helps keep the interior colder for longer, as no air can escape or penetrate the bag. This means that the cooler bag should keep contents—up to 48 cans with ice—cold for around three to four days in 90-degree weather.

The cooler does open by a zipper at the top, but it requires lubrication for best function, as it’s also designed to be water and air resistant. Closed-cell foam insulation on the inside also helps keep things extra cold, and the tough outer shell is resistant to punctures and abrasions. An added layer of thermal plastic urethane film on the front and back also helps with puncture-resistance, too.

Carry it by the tote handles or with the attached padded strap. And be sure to take advantage of the attached bottle opener, a perk when camping, paddling, or hiking. Due to new, patent-pending vacuum valve technology, it’s recommended that customers use a vacuum to suck out excess air before the first time using the cooler for best performance.

Style: Tote | Capacity: 48 cans | Dimensions: 17 x 20.5 x 9.5 inches | Weight: 5.3 pounds | Ice Retention: 3-4 days

Most Stylish Cooler Bag

Business & pleasure co. premium cooler bag.

Vintage-inspired design with leather accents

Can hold two bottles of wine or 12 standard cans

Three exterior pockets

Fabric exterior is hard to keep clean

Pack a lunch, two bottles of wine, or 12 standard cans in this fun cooler bag that works well for short day trips. The attached handles come with a leather covering and metal snaps to keep the handles together, or you can use the adjustable shoulder strap that clips on and off for hands-free carrying. The shoulder strap even comes with a sewn-on leather piece for an elevated look. The interior of the bag is not only leakproof and easy to wipe clean, but also has a fun, floral pattern that adds a pop of color. If you want to keep your contents extra cold, you can purchase the additional Business & Pleasure Co. ice pack that fits inside the cooler bag. The exterior comes in both a navy stripe design and a yellow stripe design, although keep in mind that the fabric is spot-clean only. Three exterior pockets give you added space for your belongings, and the wraparound zipper makes it super easy to grab what you need from the cooler.

Style: Shoulder bag | Capacity: 12 cans | Dimensions: 8 x 12.5 x 8.5 inches | Weight: 1.7 pounds | Ice Retention: Hours (not specified)

We love the RTIC Soft Pack Cooler because it’s affordable, leakproof, durable, and comes in multiple sizes to suit different needs. The ice retention rivaled much more expensive coolers in our testing, and the wraparound zipper keeps the cold inside. For a budget-friendly option, Coleman Chiller Soft-Sided Portable Cooler is very spacious and comes with multiple pockets for storing extras. Plus, it can retain ice for 12 hours, which should be more than enough for a picnic or beach day, and we loved the removable inner bin that makes cleanup a breeze.

Tips for Choosing the Right Cooler Bag

Size and capacity.

Whether you're toting just a few bottles of wine or a six-pack, or drinks for a crowd, you’ll want to consider what your cooler bag can handle when purchasing. The last thing you want is to be lugging around a huge cooler bag that you won’t even fill all the way up, or vice versa: having a cooler bag that’s too small for all the drinks and snacks you need.

Destination

Consider where you’re going to be using the cooler bag, as weather can play a huge role in ice retention. If you’re going to the lake or beach on a hot day, you’ll want a cooler bag with great ice retention that’ll keep your drinks cold all day long. You’ll also want to consider the bag’s exterior as well to make sure it can hold up to sand, water, dirt, and mud you might encounter.

Carrying Options

Cooler bags often come with either a top handle, a shoulder strap, backpack straps, or a combination. If you’ll be carrying your cooler bag with other equipment, like beach equipment or camping chairs, consider a backpack cooler bag or even one that comes with a shoulder strap. If you aren’t going too far, or are using a small cooler bag, you might be able to get away with a tote-style bag that you can carry by hand.

Do soft cooler bags work as well as hard-sided coolers?

Soft-sided cooler bags and hard-sided coolers work in the same way. They provide insulation to keep ice from melting and a sealed top to keep hot air out. Cooler bags will have a leakproof zipper a lot of times, while a hardside cooler will have a sealed top. Either way, the cooler is supposed to keep ice from melting and keep drinks and food cold.

How do you care for a cooler bag?

Always check to see if there are specific cleaning and care instructions that come with your cooler bag, and abide by those. If there are no instructions, simply wiping out the interior with a cleaning wipe or paper towels and an antibacterial cleaning spray will work. Depending on the materials used on the exterior of your cooler, you can possibly clean the outside with soap and water and then rinse them off and let them air dry.

What should not be stored in a cooler bag?

Be careful when storing glass bottles in a cooler bag that doesn’t have padded dividers specifically for glass bottles. The glass can clink together and break in the bag without padded dividers. (Fortunately, our favorite cooler bag for wine, the Tirrinia 4-Bottle Wine Carrier , does come with dividers to prevent this.) It’s also recommended to clean out the cooler bag when you’re done using it, as leaving liquids and food inside the bag will make it grow mold quickly. We also don’t recommend storing anything super smelly, like fish, inside your cooler bag, as the insulation can lock in that smell and it can be hard to get rid of.

Amanda Ogle is a freelance writer and editor with seven years of experience covering food and drink, travel, and general lifestyle topics. For this list, we researched different types of coolers and tested several of the options on our list over several weeks, considering factors such as style, capacity, size, ice retention, and portability. For expert insight, Amanda consulted with Hannah Mara, vice president of product management for YETI.

Best Travel Cooler Bags: Keep Things Hot (Or Cold) As Long As You Need!

Admin Reviews

When it comes to travel, having the right cooler bag can make all the difference. Whether you’re packing a picnic for a day out or need to keep food and drinks cool during a long journey, a good cooler bag will ensure your items stay fresh and safe. With so many options available, it can be hard to know which features to look for when selecting the best travel cooler bag. Here are some of the best features to consider when making your choice for the best travel cooler bags .

Some Features of the Best Travel Cooler Bag

Insulation : The most important feature to look for in a travel cooler bag is insulation. A well-insulated bag will keep your food and drinks cool for hours, even in hot climates. Look for bags that have thick walls with multiple layers of insulation to ensure maximum temperature control.

Size : When choosing a cooler bag, size is key. If you’re looking for something that can fit a lot of food and drinks, opt for a larger bag with plenty of compartments. For smaller items, a medium-sized bag should suffice.

Durability : Durability is also an important factor to consider. Look for bags made from tough, water-resistant materials that can withstand rough handling. The straps and handles should also be strong enough to carry the weight of the contents.

Leakproof : If you’re carrying liquid items, it’s important to make sure the bag is leakproof. Look for bags with zippered closures and airtight seals to prevent any spills or leaks.

Style : Last but not least, style is important too. There are a range of colors and designs available, so you can find one that suits your taste. From classic canvas bags to modern designs, there’s something to suit everyone.

These are just some of the features to look for when choosing the best travel cooler bag. With the right bag, you can keep your food and drinks cool and fresh for hours, no matter where you go.

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

Wondering what to pack for Russia in the summer? Our Russian-born author shares her tips and tricks on dressing for both day and night!

What to Pack for Russia: Summer

Written By: Julia K.

If you made it to Moscow, Russia during summer, you’re in luck. Moscow offers a plethora of beautifully landscaped parks and festivals all over the city. If you want to know how to visit all those locations in style, continue reading!

Traveling to Russia in the winter? Read this post instead.

Packing List for Russia in the Summer

Summers in Moscow can get hot. It can range between 77-86°F (25-30°C) and sometimes be humid. Dressing appropriately, comfortably, and accordingly will save you a headache and make your stay more enjoyable.

Always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a travel capsule wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

Must-see attractions during summer include many parks, such as VDNH, Chistyye Prudy, Izmaylovo and Izmailovsky Park, and of course the famous antique and flea market called Vernisaj.

Start by reading these general tips on packing for summer travel:

  • Capsule Wardrobe for Summer
  • Top Summer Dresses Perfect for Europe
  • Lightweight Jackets for Easy Layers
  • Best Walking Shoes for Europe’s Cobblestone Streets

One can see a range of different styles in Moscow. After all, it’s a hub for many travelers, businesspeople, and locals. However, if you’d like to be perceived and treated in a particular way, then pay attention to the way you dress.

You may attract unwanted attention if you wear clothing that’s inappropriate to the local culture. Observe what people are wearing around you and these tips should help point you in the right direction before you arrive.

The following suggestions are based on the perspective of a local born in Moscow.

What to pack for Russia if you’re going to any of the parks:

what-to-pack-for-russia

Blouse | Shorts |  Hat | Scarf | Watch | Sunglasses | Purse  | Flats

  • Flat sandals or flats
  • Dressy shorts or a midi skirt (no shorter than one hand above the knee)
  • A nice blouse
  • A crossbody bag
  • A hat and sunglasses
  • Jewelry and a watch

If you’ll be staying out all day into the evening, wearing layers is key. Pack a shawl or a cardigan for romantic walks next to the Moscow River.

Pro tip: Take a mosquito repellent just in case and apply sun protection wherever you go.

Read this post to find out our stylish strategies on how to layer clothes !

What not to wear:

As a local, I wouldn’t recommend wearing flip flops, short shorts, mini skirts, bright makeup, or see-through clothes. It’s a good idea not to show cleavage, unless you have a layer underneath. Choose understated jewelry instead of flashier pieces.

What to pack for Russia if you’re going to a festival:

what-to-pack-for-russia

Dress |  Hat  | Umbrella |  Crossbody  | Earrings | Lipstick | Watch |  Flats

  • A nice day dress
  • A pair of comfortable wedges
  • A light purse
  • A scarf for the evening
  • Light jewelry
  • Light makeup (bronzer, mascara, lip gloss, blush)
Find out the top ten wedges readers recommend!

Travel shoes:

what-to-pack-for-russia

Flats  |  Wedge |  Oxfords

If you’d like to explore Moscow, then comfortable shoes are a must!

The summer weather is pretty predictable. Based on that, you’ll need three pairs of shoes. One to explore the city, a pair to wear in your hotel room, and something for going out. Think: wedges, dressy flats with a thick sole, and flip-flops.

What are the most comfy shoes? These experts are giving you the inside scoop on their twenty-one top picks. Take a look !

What to pack for Russia if you’re going to enjoy dinner and a ferry ride along the Moscow River:

what-to-pack-for-russia

Top  | Skirt | Jacket |  Sunglasses  |  Wedge  |  Lipstick  | Clutch | Earrings

  • A midi skirt or cropped dressy pants
  • A dressy blouse
  • Comfortable but dressy shoes
  • An evening clutch
  • A jacket for any unexpected chill

Make sure your clothes are clean and neat, and that there are no flashy colors or over-the-top prints.

Summer is also a perfect opportunity to take a short trip to St. Petersburg, one of the most iconic cities in the world. It’s full of heritage, architecture, galleries, and art, even for the most discerning travelers and art lovers. You can get there by train or plane. Whichever is in your budget, pack with comfort and style in mind!

Whether you’re spending a summer abroad or finally taking that vacation you’ve been dreaming about for years, TFG has the ultimate long term packing list for your European adventures !

What to pack for Russia for a 3-day getaway to St. Petersburg:

what-to-pack-for-russia

Dress  |  Earrings | Clutch | Wedge |  Cardigan  | Tank  | Pants |  Flats | Purse  |  Blouse  | Pants | Jacket |  Scarf | Hat | Flats

  • Day/night dress that’s easy to dress up or down with some jewelry
  • Comfortable flats to explore the city in
  • A change of clothes that covers your knees and shoulders
  • A scarf and sweater for when the city becomes cooler during the evening
  • A windbreaker
  • Everyday jewelry
  • A hat to protect yourself from the sun
  • A small umbrella
These are the most cute and comfortable ballet flats for travel!

Some museums and churches might refuse service or admission if shoulders and knees are uncovered. I also recommend avoiding jean cutoffs and tank tops, as they may get unwanted attention.

When entering any religious building modesty should be considered, these tips will help you learn how to pack!

Shopping tips:

Moscow has every single store you could think of! From global luxury brands to everyday wear, it caters to many budgets.

If you want to arrive during sale season, then arrive one to two months before the end of the season. You can pick up European-made goods cheaper than in North America. Good shopping malls include Afimall located in Moscow City (another must see) and Evropeiskii located at Kievsky train station.

I’m traveling to Moscow in five days and was wondering if I should really not wear shorts. I’ve been to Nizhny Novgorod in the summer and Moscow in the winter so I have a few ideas about what to wear, but I thought that shorts wouldn’t be so bad.
