Confirm it is CDI and not points ignition Ensure key, kill, and deadman switches are in the proper posistion Check over wiring (look for unconnected or broken wires) If all is ok, start unhooking the switches and test for spark after each disconnect

Bad coil?

Got her going thanks guys was the coil runs like a watch by the way I'm revy 800 forgot my password for ULTRAMANIAC profile but remembered it agian lol

i had one of those sleds. it was a good trail sled.

Glad it was the coil like I guessed. Should have been fairly easy and not too expensive, maybe 20-30 bucks?

Ya was a cheap fix I picked up 2 old 500 everests over the weekend one runs the other turns but needs work.Thought they would be good machine for my neice and nefews anyways same coil. Thanks again

what are the proper sparkplugs for a 1986 doo safari 377??

  • Add to quote

just wondering what the proper plugs are. im running br9es and dont think there hot enough. either that or my coils gone

ski doo safari 377 no spark

Try br8es's, i think they are the hotter plug, thats what i ran in my '80 citation ss this past winter. If your coils were gone you wouldnt have spark.

BR9ES is the correct plug ... what is the engine doing to make you think the plugs are not hot enough?

somtimes the plugs are perfect other times there really fouled and it only runs on one cylinder im think new coil because somtimes one is perfect the other is fouled. alot of people with this sled use br8es tho? im not sure

To be honest, I have't looked at your other posts and threads so I don't know if you've cleaned your carbs, changed ignition wires or caps ... but that's the order I'd try before getting any deeper.

most all sleds are BR9ES except for the SDI

problems with my 377 safari

  • Add to quote

I have a 377 safari ski doo 1988. When I run the sled it quits, after a minute or two will start again and run. I have tried changing the spark plugs, cleaned the carbarator, changed fuel line and fuel filter in the tank. changed spark plugs caps and checked the spark on the plugs. I have put a new gasket set in the fuel filter. All seem okay. I tried loosening the cap on the fuel tank to make sure it is getting air. When the machine stalls there appears to be fuel in the line. Primer has fuel in line as well. When machine is stalling priming it does not work. Am out of ideas where to look. If anyone has any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

More info. Has it been running this year, if so for how long. Is this engine oil injected. Fresh fuel. Is there air bubbles in the fuel lines.

Yes it has been running. It will start on first pull after being primed, ilde for hours. When I try lifting the rear of the sled can run it full out, won't stall. When I try driving it slow won't stall, but try driving it fast will stall approximately 1/2 mile down the road. Engine is oil injected and does have fresh fuel, I changed it when I changed the fuel filter and fuel line. No bubbles or water in the fuel line. It almost seems to me that something is heating up stalls, cools down and will run again. If you try starting it immediately after the machine stall it runs and stalls again or will go a little and stall again. If you let it sit for a couple of minutes it will run again. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like the coil is getting hot and quiting. Have you check spark right after it dies? had a truck once that would act the same and turned out to be the coil. Does this sound right to anyone else? If you can prime it and that dont fix it, must be electric.

try running with the air box off. if it runs better let me know and i'll tell you what to do next

I have a similar problem too... Every once in a while it will stall out.. but it's inconsistant...I'll be playing for hours and all of a sudden stalls out then starts again.... hmmm

My thoughts are your oil injection pump is going south, it supply's enough oil at idle and when you run it wide open when the track is lifted, underload it may not be suppling enough oil and the engine is heating up. cools and restarts. If it was ignition, would it not break up at high RPM's and under load, maybe backfire. I'm new to sledding so I don't know it all. If it was me I would add some oil to the fuel so what happens.

From my experience the cdi either works or don't. The coil can heat up and quit. Also the pick up might be loose. You dont have a oil problem unless the plugs are white. Your head gasket could be leaking. Look for leaks around the head first. Alot of shops can test your coil for a min charge. Also make sure everything is grounded. If you can by pass any kill switch and tether(remember youll have to choke it to kill it). Good luck and let me know how its coming.

Check your intake between carb and cylinder to make sure you are getting a good seal spray some wd 40 around there while its running if she revs upa little your leaking somewhere and may be causing problems at high rpm , or could you be vapour locking in the fuel system causing it to quit at high rpm

i have an 88 safari 377..same problem.........i have tried just about everythign but the cdi and coils.........im going t probably pull it apart and get them tested.....my feelings are that it gets hot and fails...a very typical coil problem..........CDI is debateable.......cause that kind of things usually works....or does something so bizzare it wont work right..or wont work at all.........im betting on coils........ what ever happend to he days of points and condensors.......things were so easy back then!!!

Same problem over here. I have a 82 citation SS runs for half mile then shuts down, sometimes refires sometimes does not. Been through the carbs, plugs etc. I'll be watching for all posts or post myself with any luck. I,m leaning towards coil heating up.

1994 Safari Delux has spark, then no spark

  • Add to quote

My Dad has a 94 Safari Delux, electric start. This machine will start cold everytime, and run till you shut it off. After you shut it off and try to start it again, by key or electric start, sometimes it will start, other times it won't. When it does not start, we have pulled the plug and there is no spark. It will usually start after it gets cold. This has been going on for the last three years. He is in Northern Maine and has taken it to two shops (not Ski Doo dealership) and they can't figure out the problem. The problem is intermittent, so it is hard to trouble shoot. I think it might be the CDI but typically don't they fail completely? I am heading back up there next weekend, so could you point me in the right direction? The machine runs great for him when it runs, but I don't want him stranded down the lake. Thanks in advance.

ski doo safari 377 no spark

I'd lean more toward stator.

Is there a test you can perform, or am I running the same chance that when I do the test everything is OK? Where can I get parts for a machine that old? Thanks for the help.

ski doo safari 377 no spark

CDI & Coils can sometimes breakdown when hot so you may want to do as "smallengineguy" said and check the stator (ohm it cold and then hot. You should have the same resistance).Try swapping the coil.

I have the exact same problem with my 94 skandic 503. I have replaced the stator, regulator/rectifier & CDI (Ducati) and it still won't start - no spark. Do the two little protrusions on the flywheel need to be magnetized for the trigger coil to send a signal to the CDI- currently, mine are not magnetized.

ski doo safari 377 no spark

The pick up coil would not need them to be magnetic. Think of it like the ABS sensor or the crankshaft or cam sensor, they just send a signal pulse as the little piece of metal goes past! I would replace the pick up coil as well as the ignition coil (s)

I am having the the same problem with my father in laws 94 safari deluxe 377. he has had this sled from new and it has never started well when warm. cold no problem. did you find what was wrong with yours.

ski doo safari 377 no spark

I've had issues with starting when warm. Usually had to hold the throttle at 1/4 to get them back up and running. As a long time owner of a 380, I've seen a lot of different issues. CDI's can go completely bad or they can be flakey. I've even had a CDI that would not fire every 180 degrees, only ever other time. Talk about chasing a ghost in the machine. Really suggested that it would be plugs, plug caps, plug wires or coils, since the CDI is shared. When the firing shifted to the other cylinder I figured it was either stator or CDI. CDI was weak and was only firing every other time. My guess is the capacitor was bad inside it. In any case, there are a couple of reasons for hard starting when warm. 1 - Older machines compression drops as they get hot, so simply checking compression when cold and then hot. If compression is dropping my 5 PSI or more, then you might do a ring job. 2 - Spark plug cap/wires have corroded. Cut back 1/8" of the spark plug wire and screw the cap back on. 3 - Carbs are dirty. Clean the carbs, pay close attention to the pilot circuit and jets. I use a magnifying glass to look close and a small piece of wire to poke through the holes.
