Our Ski Expeditions near Whitehorse, Yukon:

Book your trip of a lifetime on skis in Canada's far north Yukon, wild mountainous boreal landscape. This land of adventure was described by multiple authors like Jack London with his novels "The Call of the Forest" and "White-Fang". Still today, adventure lovers travel across these wild and quiet areas. It's in this Nordic environment that we offer a wonderful adventure on skis.

Starting from a log cabin in the countryside near Whitehorse

You will load your pulk (sled) and takes off with local guides for an immersion in the pristine and endless boreal forest, unexplored valleys, untouched mountains and frozen lakes. At this stage, you will experience first hand what true “Wilderness” is.

Everyone pulls their personal gear in a pulk for about 15 km each day while the shared and heavy equipment is transported by dogteam.

During the day

Your guide will show you the beauty of this land explaining the northern environment to you and pointing to wildlife and tracks.

In the evenings

You'll spend 3 nights in a warm and cozy log cabin then for the 2 last nights our Arctic Oven tent will be setted up and you can start to feel what a true adventure is. Heated with a wood stove this cozy shelter will invite you for the winter night. Your local guide will share with you stories of the Far North around the campfire while eating an authentic Yukon meal and watching Northern Lights!

A minimum of 2 participants is required to guarantee the departure.

Passionated, knowlegeable and experienced guides. In addition to guiding experience, Raphaelle is a cross-country, downhill and touring ski certified instructor. Fabien is a Canadian ski patrol and was a professional musher and sleddog racer until recently. Both guides have their Wilderness Advanced First Aid.

The groups are very small, 2 to 4 participants to allow for an immersive experience, an intimate connection with nature and with a low environmental impact.

Low carbon footprint

The expedition is a loop that starts and finishes at our log cabin. The only trip by car is a short shuttle to town.

The heavy equipment (canvas tent, wood stove, food) is transported by dog team. We do not use motorized vehicles for re-supplying.

Into the wild

Very high chances to observe northern wildlife (Moose, Caribous, Wolves, Lynx, Coyotes, Eagles) and Northern Lights

You might hear the dogs howling back to the wolves at camp. If interested you will have a chance to try out ski-joring (skiing pulled by a dog) on a frozen lake.

The itinerary of the expedition is unprecedented, the immersion in the true wilderness is striking. We might not even see anyone else on the trail.

About Yukon Backcountry Skiing

With skis, a snowboard or telemark skis, whatever the tools. You are at the right place to find the best slopes between Alaska and the Yukon and to know more about skiing in the Yukon.

I used my experience, my passion for photography and my time well spent in the mountains to write and publish two guide books . The perfect tools to prepare you ski adventures between Alaska and Yukon at White Pass and Haines Pass .

About the author – Claude Vallier

I was born in the small village of le Grand Bornand, in the Aravis mountain range, in the middle of the Alps. I started skiing at the age of 1.5 years old. Skier, snowboarder and mountaineer. Professionally or for fun, I have been skiing in the backcountry for over 25 years and still have the same pleasure to do it.

I have been living in the Yukon for 10 years and still love it more than ever.

PLUM SUMMIT 12

PLUM Summit 12 It seems like the season is far to be finished. While writing this review, it’s still -27 c outside, and we had 2 days of blizzard. At the passes where we ski, there is still 3 meters of snow at the road level. We already had a good season with great conditions. After months…

an Emergency Plan for Yukon’s backcountry adventures

Are you really prepared in case of emergency? Do you have an emergency plan for your next Yukon’s backcountry adventure.   Accidents happen, equipment breaks, weather changes, the unexpected: expect it! No one is immune from problems in the backcountry. Weather changes fast, cold, snow, rain, rain, poor visinility are important factors you must be…

A little video of Paddy’s Peak East summit, the main couloir. Not too steep or extreme but you’re definitively in the “no fall zone”. Snow was variable in the couloir, wind affected, supportive or unsupportive crust, hard snow a bit of everything. Very good to keep you on your guard. Then, at the bottom of the…

Mountain Safety Education

Yukon Backcountry is one of the best places to practise outdoor activities. Tour description.

Our cross country skiing tour offers a variety of cross country skiing experiences providing participants with a taste of the spectacular Yukon landscape in winter and the most fun you can have on two skiis!

Perhaps surprisingly, Canada’s Yukon boasts one of the country’s most avid cross country ski communities. Yukoners are passionate cross-country skiers and have developed several extensive community trail systems, each with a special character. Championship organizers at the highest levels have recognized the Yukon’s excellence and have awarded World Cup events in both cross country and biathlon, as well as the 2007 Canada Winter Games and 2010 Haywood Ski National Championships. These events have resulted in the development of several Olympic and National team cross country skiers and have attracted the attention of world class skiers.

Our tour is based in Whitehorse and communities a short distance outside the Yukon capital. The world class trail system of the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club at Mt. McIntyre is located just minutes from your downtown hotel. The trails are expertly groomed and offer many viewpoints of the beautiful surrounding mountains and valleys. Trails range in difficulty from beginner to advanced, to touring and racing.

Once you’ve got a feel for local conditions, we’ll travel just outside Whitehorse for a pleasant ski through the Yukon Wildlife Preserve and views of caribou, moose, elk, bison, musk-ox, mountain goats, Dall sheep, and even a lynx! An other day, we’ll travel to the stunning coastal ranges south of Whitehorse to ski the superb subalpine country in the White Pass.

After several days of fabulous skiing in the Whitehorse area, we will leave the groomed trails behind and head into the wild! One hour drive west of Whitehorse on the famous Alaska Highway brings us to a river confluence where we will begin skiing. Following the tracks of wild animals we will ski up the frozen Takhini River to a wilderness wall tent camp. You will experience first hand how frozen waterways provide routes of travel through the North.

Later we will continue west to Haines Junction, a village on the edge of a magnificent mountain range which contains Canada’s highest peak (Mt. Logan, 5920m) for 2 days of skiing in magnificent Kluane National Park; one of Canada’s most spectacular wilderness regions and home to world’s largest (non-polar) ice cap. If you love Canadian cross country skiing, you will love this tour!

Here you get a true Yukon winter experience!

Day 1: We will meet you at the airport in Whitehorse and take you on a shopping and sightseeing tour. Afterwards, we will drive to our place and your log cabin, where you will spend the next 7 days.

Day 2: We still have to get used to the Yukon winter on the second day and start with a simple snowshoeing hike at the foot of nearby Pilot Mountain. Already during this tour through the snowy winter forest you will get to know the beauty of the winter landscape. Along our route, we take a few breaks and enjoy the beautiful view of the Whitehorse Valley and the Ibex Mountains.

Day 3: Today there are various activities are available. We offer you the possibility to enjoy a day cross-country skiing in the cross-country skiing area of Mount McIntyre or Alpine skiing in our ski area at Mount Sima. Of course, ski equipment is provided. If you want to take it easy, take a sightseeing tour in Whitehorse and visit the MacBride Museum, which gives you a good impression of the Yukon history, the gold rush and the Yukon River sternwheeler. Afterwards we visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. In the evening we can sit at the camp fire and try to observe the famous Northern Lights – Aurora Borealis. With a little bit of luck you will see a wonderful coloring in the sky.

Day 4: Now it’s snowmobile time!  Join us for an extended excursion with the snowmobile to the untouched nature and enjoy a day with the snowmobile on the Old Dawson or the Livingstone Trail in the hinterland.

After a brief introduction, we start our snowmobile trip over the frozen Yukon or Takhini River.  On the snowy river, we have enough time to familiarize ourselves with the snowmobile before continuing our tour on the Old Dawson Overland also known as the Trans Canada Trail. We will have our lunch break at a historic place and warm ourselves up at the camp fire.  Hot drinks and grilled sausages will strengthen us for the return journey.

Day 5: After the exertions of the last few days, we are going to take it a bit quieter today. We dedicate ourselves to the favorite sport of the Yukon – “ice fishing”. First we get a license and then we drive to the beautifully situated Jackson Lake and will try our luck at ice fishing on the lake. Maybe we’ll catch one of the marvelous Lake trouts. In the late afternoon, you will have time to relax in the Takhini Hot Springs and the sauna and recharge your energy for your upcoming adventure.

Day 6: Today we make you a dog musher. What is that ? You will know this at the end of the day! We will take you for a dog sledding trip and you will drive your own dog sled team. After a short introduction by the Musherguide, you will take over your dog team and off you go. Over secluded snowy trails and the snow covered Fish Lake – listen to the quiet whoosh of the runners and the soft panting of your huskies. A dog sledding trip is a real Yukon adventure where you will have your joy.

Yukon Ski Adventures: Unforgettable Winter Experiences in Canada's Pristine Wilderness

Are you a ski enthusiast looking for a winter adventure like no other? Look no further than Yukon, Canada! In this article, we will explore the best ski resorts in Yukon, along with the food, family activities, parties, transportation options, and prices, and ultimately reveal the must-see location for an unforgettable ski experience.

Nestled in the heart of Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon, Mount Sima is a popular ski resort that offers a wide range of ski trails suitable for all skill levels. From beginners to advanced skiers, there's something for everyone at Mount Sima. The resort boasts 27 ski runs, including gentle slopes for beginners and challenging black diamond runs for the more experienced skiers. With a vertical drop of 240 meters and an average annual snowfall of 150 centimetres, Mount Sima provides excellent skiing conditions from December to April.

The resort also offers modern facilities, including a ski school for beginners, equipment rentals, and a cozy chalet with a restaurant and bar where you can relax and warm up after a day on the slopes. The restaurant at Mount Sima serves a variety of delicious food options, including burgers, poutine, and hot chocolate to keep you fueled for your ski adventures.

Mount Logan Lodge

If you're looking for a more remote ski experience, Mount Logan Lodge is the perfect destination. Located in the picturesque Kluane National Park, Mount Logan Lodge offers a rustic and cozy retreat for skiers who crave solitude and pristine natural beauty. The lodge offers comfortable accommodations and easy access to the surrounding mountains for ski touring and backcountry skiing.

ski tour yukon

At Mount Logan Lodge, you can experience the thrill of skiing in untouched powder snow, surrounded by stunning glaciers and towering peaks. The lodge offers guided skiing tours for all levels of skiers, from beginners to experienced backcountry adventurers. You can also indulge in hearty Canadian cuisine at the lodge's restaurant, which features locally sourced ingredients and delicious homemade meals.

Family Activities

Yukon is a fantastic destination for a family ski vacation, with plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained. In addition to skiing, there are many family-friendly activities to enjoy, such as snowshoeing, dog sledding, ice fishing, and snowmobiling. You can also visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, where you can see majestic Canadian wildlife, including moose, caribou, and bison, up close in their natural habitat.

For a unique family experience, you can take a ride on the historic White Pass and Yukon Route Railway, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. You can also visit the MacBride Museum in Whitehorse, where you can learn about Yukon's history and indigenous cultures through interactive exhibits and displays.

Yukon may be known for its serene and pristine landscapes, but it's also a place where you can let loose and have some fun après-ski. Whitehorse, in particular, offers a vibrant nightlife scene with a variety of bars, pubs, and restaurants where you can unwind and socialize with locals and fellow skiers.

One popular spot is the Sourdough Saloon, a historic bar known for its unique tradition of serving "source cocktails." The cocktail contains a preserved human toe that is dropped into the drink, and those brave enough to take a sip with the toe touching their lips earn a certificate of bravery. It's definitely a one-of-a-kind experience that you won't find anywhere else!

Another popular nightlife spot in Whitehorse is The Woodcutter's Blanket, a cozy pub that offers a wide selection of craft beers, cocktails, and delicious comfort food. With its rustic atmosphere and live music, The Woodcutter's Blanket is a perfect place to unwind after a day of skiing and enjoy some local Yukon hospitality.

Transportation

Getting around Yukon is relatively easy, with several transportation options available. If you're flying in, Whitehorse International Airport is the main gateway to Yukon, with regular flights from major Canadian cities such as Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton. From the airport, you can rent a car or take a shuttle to your chosen ski resort or accommodation.

Alternatively, you can also travel to Yukon by road. The Alaska Highway, also known as the ALCAN Highway, is a scenic route that connects Yukon with the rest of Canada and the United States. However, it's important to note that the highway can be challenging to drive in winter, with snowy and icy conditions, so be prepared with appropriate winter driving skills and equipment.

Once you're in Yukon, most ski resorts offer shuttle services to transport you to and from the slopes, making it convenient and hassle-free to get around during your ski trip.

As with any ski destination, prices in Yukon can vary depending on the resort, accommodation, and activities you choose. Generally, Yukon is considered a relatively affordable destination compared to other popular ski resorts in Canada.

For ski resort prices, Mount Sima offers day passes starting from around $40 CAD for adults and $25 CAD for children, with discounted rates for multi-day passes and season passes. Mount Logan Lodge offers all-inclusive packages that include accommodations, meals, and guided skiing tours, with prices ranging from $300 to $500 CAD per night per person, depending on the package and time of year.

Some tips for planning your ski trip to Yukon

  • Dress in layers: The weather in Yukon can be unpredictable, with temperatures dropping significantly during winter months. Make sure to pack warm and waterproof clothing, including thermal layers, waterproof gloves, and a good quality winter coat. Layering allows you to easily adjust your clothing based on the weather conditions and your activity level.
  • Stay informed about weather conditions: Check weather forecasts regularly and be prepared for changing weather conditions, as Yukon's winter weather can vary greatly. Make sure to also check avalanche conditions if you plan to venture into the backcountry for ski touring or backcountry skiing.
  • Rent or bring appropriate ski equipment: If you plan to ski in Yukon, make sure you have the right equipment. Depending on your ski experience and the type of skiing you plan to do, you may need alpine skis, backcountry skis, or cross-country skis. If you don't have your own equipment, you can rent them from local ski shops in Whitehorse or Haines Junction.

Visit local cultural centers, interact with the local communities, and try the traditional cuisine to truly immerse yourself in the Yukon experience.

  • Respect the environment: Yukon's wilderness is pristine and fragile, so it's important to practice Leave No Trace principles and respect the natural environment. Follow all local regulations and guidelines, including proper waste disposal, respecting wildlife habitats, and staying on designated trails.
  • Budget for expenses: While Yukon's ski resorts may offer affordable accommodation options, keep in mind that transportation, food, and other activities may add up. Plan and budget for these expenses accordingly to avoid any surprises during your trip.
  • Check for seasonal availability: Yukon's ski resorts may have limited seasonal availability, so make sure to check for the best time to visit and make any necessary reservations in advance to secure your desired dates and accommodations.

Day 7: We’ll return to Haines in the afternoon — same day flights home can be arranged if desired (no earlier than 5:00 PM)

How good of a skier or snowboarder do I need to be to enjoy backcountry skiing? You should be able to consistently ski or ride down single black diamond terrain at most ski areas in variable conditions without falling.

What type of terrain will we be skiing? The type of terrain will vary depending primarily on avalanche conditions and surface snow quality. There are many great low to moderate angle runs that offer incredible powder skiing. If avalanche conditions are more stable, there are an abundance of steeper lines that we may explore as well. Our guides are adept at finding the best skiing for the current conditions.

What will the snow be like? Our vast terrain options give us flexibility to find the best snow conditions possible. The conditions can vary considerably on a single run from dry blower powder for the 1st 1,000’ to potential for more spring like conditions at lower elevations. Typically March and the 1st half of April has great powder skiing. As we approach the latter half of April, spring conditions begin to set in at lower elevations.

What do we do on poor weather days? Generally, we’ll wake up every morning, ready to ski. After assessing the weather, we may consider reversing slightly from our state of readiness depending on the weather. If plane-supported, and conditions are not optimal for flying, we may consider ski-touring on the highway-accessible terrain on Haines Pass until flights into the backcountry are an option. Guests should be prepared with their passport, as we would pass through both Canadian and US Customs to ski in this area. If we are at basecamp and the conditions are less than ideal, we may spend time around the camp learning about snow pack, rescue techniques, and ski equipment.

What is the lodging in Haines? Generally, guests will stay at the Aspen Suites Hotel . Bookings are based on room availability. If for any reason this location is full, we utilize one of the other centrally-located, great accommodations in Haines. Most accommodations are within walking distance to grocery stores, restaurants, bars and coffee shops in town.

Where will we be sleeping during the trip? We will be based in the backcountry, and will establish a basecamp from which we can access the amazing ski terrain located outside Haines, Alaska. Alaska Mountain Guides provides tents, cooking equipment, and group gear. Additional equipment such as sleeping bags is available to rent.

What type of safety gear is required? What type of safety gear is provided? Alaska Mountain Guides provides an avalanche probe, snow shovel, and avalanche beacon for all guests. We require both our guests and our guides to have these items on them while skiing/riding. If you have your own, feel free to bring them along.

What does the safety briefing look like? Before heading to the backcountry, we’ll go over safe-skiing technique, use of avalanche beacons, communications while in the mountains, and basic rescue skills, such as probing and shoveling.

What will we have for lunch during the day? Can you handle special dietary needs? Typically we’ll pack a lunch for everyone that they can fit easily in their backpack. This usually includes a bagel sandwich, piece of fruit, and a variety of snack items to munch on throughout the day. We may end up eating lunch as a rest stop to our target line, or on the top of a ridge on a beautiful day. We can happily accommodate a reasonable amount of dietary restrictions, such as gluten free or diary-free. Please let us know any restrictions before arrival.

What is the group size like? Your group size may be as small as 3, and may be as large as 8 skiers and 2 guides. We always strive to have at least 2 guides with the group when skiing. We are happy to arrange for smaller or larger groups on a custom basis.

How difficult will this trip be? What physical fitness level do I need for this trip? Ski touring requires strong legs and a healthy amount of cardio exertion. We could be hiking up several miles, and skiing back down that same distance, all within a few hours. Ski touring can require a person to be physically active for up to 5-8 hours each day. In addition to skiing, you can expect to carry a pack that can weigh up to 25 lbs, holding personal gear, safety and rescue equipment, as well as extra food and water for the day. We can recommend a fitness plan to help you prepare for the trip.

Avalanche in Austria kills three skiers from the Netherlands

Group of 17 were ski touring near resort of Sölden when 80-metre wide avalanche hit

An avalanche near the Austrian ski resort of Sölden has killed three skiers from the Netherlands. Another person was rescued and taken to hospital.

The victims were part of a 17-person ski touring group that was on an ascent with four Austrian guides. Ski touring involves using skis with special bindings and skins that make moving uphill possible.

The group was heading towards a mountain refuge at about 2,500 metres (8,200ft) above sea level when the avalanche, which was about 80 metres wide, hit just before 11am on Thursday.

It swept away four members of the group, two of whom were dead when rescuers found them. The two others were found injured; one was flown to hospital by helicopter and the other remained on the mountain. The skier who remained on the mountain died, a police spokesperson said later.

The Dutch foreign ministry said the country’s embassy in Vienna was investigating exactly what happened and was ready to provide assistance if needed.

The avalanche warning level in Tirol province, where Sölden is located, was “moderate”, the second level on a five-tier scale, but experts warned of the possibility of avalanches caused by loose snow.
