The Dalmatian Coast

The southernmost stretch of coastline of Croatia is called the Dalmatian Coast. It is the most famous region for Croatia cruising and tourism, and encompasses a narrow belt stretching from the island of Rab in the north to the Bay of Kotor in the south. On Dalmatian Coast cruises, you’ll see dramatic limestone cliffs rise from the deep, and islands like Havar and Korčula are scattered just offshore. Croatia’s top tourist town, Dubrovnik, and Split also reside on this coastline, as do several national parks including Krka, Mljet, Paklenica and Kornati. The streets are lined with tons of great dining options, with great seafood and buzz as the nightlife of the Old City comes alive after sunset. Split is the second-largest city in Croatia yet has a very charming and romantic old town by the seaside. Here you can step inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Diocletian’s Palace to immediately be impressed by the Roman architecture. Get “happily lost” in the city maze of ruins, narrow cobblestone streets, restaurants, bars and musicians. If you overnight here, we recommend staying in one of the quaint hotels within the palace walls. This allows plenty of time to explore the many highlights of the palace and the seaside area along the promenade outside of the Old Town walls. The town of Korcula is another charming port town often visited on Croatian island cruises. Korcula is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of Marco Polo. Korcula’s Old Town design is impressive: the medieval walled city’s fish bone shape was designed to reduce effects of wind and sun. All streets on the western side run straight while Eastern streets were designed with a small curve to protect the town from the unpleasant and cold north/eastern winds. This is a lovely, quaint town with abundant choices of seaside promenade restaurants and evening entertainment at local clubs and bars.

Legend says that the Greek hero Odysseus spent years on Mljet when he was captured by the nymph Calypso. See the famous salt lakes in the Mljet National Park here or take a boat ride to the St Mary Isle to visit an ancient Benedictine monastery, an old abbey and a church dating back to the 12th century. This is a fun place rent kayaks, bicycles, scooters or convertible cars.

A few highlights in Hvar include hiking up to the fortress overlooking old town Hvar and the Pakleni Islands at sunset and enjoying their famous lavender ice cream! This town is known as the longest and sunniest island in the Adriatic Sea. Hvar is full of historical landmarks including the Renaissance cathedral with its original tower and the oldest community theater in Europe (founded in 1612). In the evening Hvar offers an abundance of entertainment, restaurants, bars and cafes that are open long into the night.

Pelješac Peninsula

The 40-mile long, mountainous Pelješac Peninsula is a region known for its excellent wine. Stops here explore rural villages with wineries, farms, churches and monasteries. Lively ports like Trpanj offer swimming, a lively ocean promenade and family-friendly vacation vibes.

Zlatni Rat Beach (the Golden Cape) & Bol

The famous Zlatni Rat Beach (the Golden Cape or Golden Horn) is located about a mile west from the town of Bol on the island of Brač. This popular swim stop has been regularly listed as one of the top beaches in Europe and is found on many a Dalmatian Coast cruise itinerary. Its distinctive shape shifts depending on the changing tides, currents and winds. The waters surrounding this gorgeous stretch of sand are often cool and clear due to the current in the Hvar Channel. Bol is a typical fishing town but also a very popular tourist destination and has a great promenade.

Zadar, the oldest university town in Croatia, is famous for its rich historical heritage of world importance. See the Roman Forum from the 1st century and from the 9th century St Donat church, the most famous medieval basilica and the symbol of the city. The mighty city walls encase the old town and there is a representative city gate from the 16th century. Among many museums, the museum of ancient glass stands out, as do more than 30 churches, palaces and villas. On the waterfront, the award-winning Sea Organ and “Greeting to the Sun” light installations show the funky side of this Dalmatian Coast cruise highlight.

Cruise towards Rab, known as the “island of love,” with an old town of the same name. This is the northernmost point of the Dalmatian Coast, and in fact, many Dalmatian Coast cruises don’t even sail this far north, instead embarking on disembarking in Split. So this is a special bonus if it’s on your Croatia small ship cruise itinerary. Here find medieval walls, the famous four towers (and maybe climb one) together with palaces, churches and squares. Overall a really fun trip & beautiful country. Was a good balance of relaxing/swimming and trips/hikes. We had one of the best groups of people aboard. Everyone meshed really well. And our guides were one of our favorite things about the cruise.

A top location - great ship - wonderful communication... Enjoy a trip of a lifetime! We had so much fun - dancing, dining, swimming, discovering, cocktail hours!

My wife and I have always been cruise-wary, preferring to travel on our own. This was a delightful cruise on a vessel of a perfect size. I would do such a cruise again and will certainly recommend this trip to any seeking my opinion.

The food, cleanliness of the ship, and friendliness of the staff on the Futura made for a wonderful and relaxing week.

It was one of the best vacations I have ever had and I travel fairly frequently.

The ship was just perfect, great size for an experience on a small ship. The swim spots were one of the highlights. AdventureSmith was so knowledgeable and knew about the specific trip I was looking at.

This was such a great trip. It was so well planned, right down to the  airport transfers at 2:45 AM. I would surely recommend AdventureSmith and this particular trip to others. I would like to go on more small boat trips like this one.

Croatia was a beautiful country. Overall a really fun trip. Was a good balance of relaxing/swimming and trips/hikes. Very hot this time of year which might not suit everyone. The Croatian people were very nice and you felt safe wherever we went.

Rooms were nice. Shower was decently big and water was hot.

Food was overall very good. Lunch portions could be smaller.  Don’t necessarily need 3 courses (including dessert) for lunch.

Itinerary Review

Safari boat ride in Opuzen to restaurant was a pleasant and fun surprise. Mostar bridge was awesome to see. Trpanj and Matusko wine tasting was fun. Didn’t really have any places I didn’t like. Some people complained about the end of the trip having basically 2 days in Split but wasn’t a huge deal to me.

Transportation Review

Transport to and from the airport was on time and safe.

Crew & Guides Review

Ziggi our main guide was excellent. Very personable and informative. He had a great sense of humor and kept the trip fun. Andro the second guide was also very good. He had a lot of knowledge on the areas we visited and was very active with us in all the excursions. He made a point to make sure no one felt left out. Together they were a very strong guide team and one of our favorite things about the cruise. The local guide in Korcula was especially funny and informative too.

Fellow Passengers Review

This was one of the best groups of people. Everyone meshed really well. At least half of the passengers were repeat Intrepid travelers. I think that speaks well for their business model.

A top location - great ship - wonderful communication with our rep, Taylor. We enjoyed all the spots the boat docked - and the swim spots were wonderful. 

I've already recommended the company, sent links to friends and will be sharing this with a local travel agent we've used in the past. 

The vessel was new and apparent they still had work to do - but with the owner on board he was apologizing for any unfinished work. There was nothing that hindered our trip.

Food was delicious and menus were varied. A suggestion would be to post a menu so you knew what you were eating!

The captain of M/S Riva did a wonderful job making everyone feel comfortable and he was always working to please the clients. A beach stop was no problem for our captain to bring us all wine/beer on the beach! It's those little things that stay with you.

Rokko was always available and ready to assist if you needed anything. One suggestion is that he speak a bit slower!

Appreciated the airport transfers waiting for us and bringing us to and from the airport to our hotels! Very good drivers.

Taylor was available if I had any questions. We had hotel stays before and after our cruise and Taylor made the suggestion to have our included transfers from and to the airport bring us to our hotels rather than from hotel to ship as they were not far and we could walk. Reading material was sufficient.

Enjoy a trip of a lifetime! We enjoyed the crew and had so much fun with all our other passengers - dancing, dining, swimming, discovering, cocktail hours! A great, relaxing vacation! Do it now - don't put it off!

Itinerary did change due to weather and that was clear in the written documents. It was stated that snorkel gear would be available but they did not have any flippers onboard. 

We would recommend this trip to anyone looking to experience the country of Croatia and find new friends!

We were delighted with our AdventureSmith vacation. Our experience with the Katarina Cruise Line was extremely positive. The crew were ALL welcoming, friendly, attentive and always eager to provide any needs which happened to arise. My only criticism might be that there was too much food, dessert at lunch is not at all our standard fare. I obviously did not have to partake of the offerings available; however, will power is not at all my strongest suit. The food was consistently excellent and the ready availability of coffee kept me from caffeine withdrawal.

[Re: fellow passengers] Ours was a very broad mixture of nationalities considering that there were fewer than thirty of us aboard. We had S. Africans, Bolivians, French, Canadians, Austro-Hungarians, Americans and Irish aboard. We all mixed and got along well. My wife and I have always been cruise-wary, preferring to travel on our own. This was a delightful cruise on a vessel of a perfect size. I would do such a cruise again and will certainly recommend this trip to any seeking my opinion. We had never before visited the Balkans and were interested to see the area and learn more about it and its people. We owe a huge thanks to our friend who found the trip and permitted us to append ourselves to his sedulous travel plans.

The Futura was hands down the most spotless vessel upon which I have ever had the pleasure of journeying. Fantastic crew and very comfortable accommodations. Perfect size vessel and to our delight only less than thirty passengers aboard which permitted the crew to spoil us rotten.

The food was consistently excellent. I ate too much: my fault entirely, certainly not a complaint.

Our principal leader, Minja, was very good.

Dubrovnik was wonderful as were Hvar and Bol. We stopped our last night for the captain’s dinner at the small community of Mila which was extremely charming. We would have been happy to have had a bit more time there. The visit to the family winery at Prizdrina was very worthwhile. The visit to the lakes and monastery at Mljet were my least favorite if you insist upon my selection of a least wonderful day.

Everything about this trip was exceptional, and we will definitely recommend AdventureSmith to friends.

Bring aqua socks or Tevas.

The food, cleanliness of the ship, and friendliness of the staff on the Futura made for a wonderful and relaxing week. I loved lounging on the top deck, reading and watching the beautiful scenery. Also getting to swim off the boat. The visit to the restaurant (I can't remember the name) at one of the stops that involved a long bus ride with hairpin turns, a look at some donkeys, a tour of an old monastery, and eating under a bunch of cured meat was not to my liking at all.

The low price of this trip was very appealing! I had never been on a small boat like this and found I loved it, and would travel this way again.

I loved our cabin and was very glad we upgraded. There was a musty or dank smell in the bathroom occassionally. Also the noise level in the dining room made conversation with anyone very difficult and frustrating.

I thought the food was great - fresh and varied- and was very appreciative of the staff's kind accomodation to my vegetarian preference.

Anna was the least satisfactory part of my time on the Futura. Although she did seem to respond to individual requests, I didn't need anything specific. But she did not "lead" our trip in the sense of giving us a sense of time and place - she left that to the local guides, some of whom were good, others not. Schedules were not posted until the morning. She seemed a bit ditzy and almost ephemeral - sweet and young that is not what I look for in a trip leader.

The only suggestion I have is that I didn't know that British pounds are rarely used in Croatia - better to bring kuna only.

It was one of the best vacations I have ever had and I travel fairly frequently.  I went as a group experience and Adventure Smith organized the whole thing. We had 15 of us in total and it was just a blast! The boat and the crew exceeded our expectations.  The rooms were beautiful and large and very comfortable. The places were went were well thought out and we docked in amazing ports and anchored in beautiful areas to swim.  We just had a blast. Only complaint would be the complimentary wine with dinner, it was really horrible. I would recommend they provide that one complimentary glass as a good wine and then we would all have bought additional bottles. Also, it would have been great to have a printed form that showed the full itinerary for each day. It is nice to know what to prepare for in regards to dress and timing etc., but we had to guess somewhat and it was hard to understand the trip organizer at times. 

The boat was gorgous and new and comfortable and the perfect size. Couldn't have asked for more! Loved it! It felt like we were living large. We definitely had one of the nicer boats out there and the boat and crew just made the trip even more enjoyable.

Most of the meals were adequate. The chef seemed like he was limited in what he was allowed to do. I think if he was given more free reign he could have done better. Every breakfast was basically the same, but very good and at lunch our favorite was the salads and one day we actually had a variety of salads for lunch and we loved it. And, the dinners got better as the week went on, so that was nice.

The leader got more friendly and interesting as the week went on. He really left us alone to just enjoy the trip and the boat, but I think if he would have socialized more wiht us upfront we would have gottent to know him better sooner than later and that would have been helpful. and, the flashing light of the intinerary was annoying. But, when he did help us it was terrific and he knew tons. Nice man and truly very helpful and he was fun, once he relaxed a bit with all of us.

Guides were terrific! Not one of them was not absolutely fantastic! Some of the best local guides i have ever experienced on any trip! Would highly recommend they use all the same guides they did for our trip as well as the place for wine tasting and mussel tasting.

I have already recommended Adventure Smith and we posted tons of pictures on FB.

Just relax and enjoy and wear and bring comfortable shoes (lots of cobblestone streets). 

The ship was just perfect, great size for an experience on a small ship. The swim spots were one of the highlights. The captain found the perfect spot one day when it was a rough day at sea and cool but we wanted to swim. He found the most perfect spot away from the wind and just the most perfect anchorage. Loved all the islands, especially Korcula.

The trip leader, Matia, was just perfect. A great personality and able to make sure everyone's needs were met.  Not a small task for 35 people for 1 week.

Tiffany assisted in the trip planning from start to finish and was so helpful in making sure we were on the right kind of cruise. I did online searching but what made my decision to use Adventure Smith travel after speaking to her on the phone.  She was so knowledgeable and knew about the specific trip I was looking at.

This was such a great trip. It was so well planned, right down to the  airport transfers at 2:45 AM. I would surely recommend AdventureSmith and this particular trip to others. I would like to go on more small boat trips like this one. Along with the group that made arrangements through Adventure Smith, all of the travelers were congenial and easy to get along with. We had no conflict. I would like to travel with this group again. And I will surely encourage others to do so.

The beds on the ship were very hard. So sleep was an experience that was lacking. If possible, I would like  the same sort of ship but  with some sort of foam topper on the bed. The cabin was lovely, big and clean. The beds were just too hard. Everyone on the ship complained about it. I liked the balcony. The snorkeling equipment was in poor shape. That would have been an easy problem to fix.

I liked the breakfasts. There was only one option for each dinner. It was served nicely. It was not always my favorite food. But there was always the salad bar. An option of vegetarian or chicken breast might have been good.

Ivan was wonderful. He tried to meet all of our expectations. His English was so good and easy to understand. Even when weather kept us from visiting Kis, he did his best to give us a good alternative experience.

I enjoyed the  port visits, expecially to Korcula. I liked having tour guides in every town. Some were better than others. The guide in Split gave us a 45 minute tour instead of the expected 75 minutes. The round tables made meals a time to get to know other passengers. As for the add-on, we had a full day in Split and no time in Zagreb. I would have preferred  a more structured alternative in Split or more time in Zagreb with an additional tour there.

Croatia’s small ship cruises are incredibly popular. And with all the beautiful Croatian islands to explore, that is really no surprise.

I recently joined Fjaka Sail on their small ship cruise in Croatia and quickly learned that there are different types of small ship cruises for different types of people . And, that these cruises aren’t suitable for everyone.

If you’ve already done some research about cruising in Croatia you’ve probably noticed that there are tons of different websites offering cruises and that there are even more different boats to choose from.

So, what I want to achieve with this article is to help you find the type of cruise in Croatia that best suits your needs .

I’ll share the advantages of going on a small ship cruise in Croatia, the different types of boats and trips you can choose from, and some other information I think will be useful to help you figure out what type of cruising in Croatia is right for you.

Cruising in Croatia – Everything You Need to Know

What is a small ship cruise in croatia.

A small ship cruise in Croatia is a popular way to explore the Adriatic coastline aboard an intimate vessel designed for a personalized experience.

Unlike large cruise ships, small ship cruises accommodate a limited number of passengers, generally between 20 to 40, creating a cozy and relaxed atmosphere.

One of the key advantages of a small ship cruise is the ability to visit smaller ports that larger vessels cannot access. Croatia boasts a wealth of picturesque islands, charming fishing villages, and historic towns, and on a small ship cruise, you’ll be able to dock in these popular places.

Imagine exploring the birthplace of Marco Polo on Korcula Island or wandering through the narrow streets of Hvar Town, all just a short distance from your floating home.

Onboard, the level of luxury (think en-suite bathrooms, private or shared rooms, comfortable sun loungers, etc) depends on the type of small ship cruise you choose, which I’ll discuss later.

But there will always be a nice sun deck to take in the panoramic views of the shimmering sea and idyllic islands. The ships serve delicious regional cuisine, have a bar open all day, and, if you’re on a small ship cruise like Fjaka Sail, you’ll even have a jacuzzi on deck.

It’s a unique form of accommodation where you can unwind after a day of adventure.

Generally each day you visit a different location and stop at a beautiful swim stop, weather permitting, along the way.

Why Go on a Small Ship Cruise in Croatia?

There are several reasons why people choose a small ship cruise in Croatia.

1. It’s a Comfortable Way to See Different Destinations 

Croatia’s islands, coastal towns, and stunning beaches are some of the country’s highlights and most popular places to visit.

A small ship cruise will take you to a new destination every day, all of which are among those popular destinations.

And this makes cruising in Croatia a great way to get a glimpse of the country’s highlights in a short amount of time.

2. It’s a Unique Experience

Exploring a country on board a luxury yacht is quite a unique experience!

Being taken to a new island while you enjoy a freshly cooked lunch or are relaxing on deck staring out at the incredibly blue Adriatic sea… Do I really need to say more?

3. No Travel Planning, Just Relax & Enjoy

As much as I enjoy planning trips , it can get stressful and quite time-consuming, especially if you want to see many different places.

Deciding where to go, finding hotels, figuring out how to get to all the different places, and researching what the best things to do are, takes a lot of time!

On a typical small ship cruise in Croatia, which is 8 days and 7 nights, you’ll visit 7 different destinations. Can you imagine the stress of having to book transportation, hotels, activities, etc. in all these destinations?

For a stress-free vacation that does allow you to see different places, a small ship cruise is perfect!

Everything is organized for you, yet you have enough freedom to fill in your days the way you want to.

Every day the ship will take you to a different swim stop, weather permitting, and then dock at a different destination.

The guide on board might take you for a tour of the destination, offer some shore excursions (more on that later), or you can simply step off the boat and enjoy this new destination until the boat sets off again the next morning.

4. It’s Great for Solo Travelers Because You Easily Connect With Others

If you love meeting other travelers, these Croatia cruises are great.

Especially the small ship cruises that target a younger audience (more about the different types of cruises later) are incredibly sociable.

With many shared activities offered every day ranging from hikes to wine tastings and nights out in popular clubs, it’s incredibly easy to make friends with your fellow cruisers.

This makes cruises a popular choice for solo travelers.

But of course also if you’re not traveling alone, it’s just a great way to meet other travelers and make friends for life.

And, an added benefit for solo travelers is that on most of the small ship cruises you can book a shared cabin. This both saves money and helps you connect with another traveler.

5. It’s a Good Deal

When you check prices for cruises in Croatia it may at first sound expensive.

But once you start calculating what you’d otherwise spend on hotels in prime locations, a buffet breakfast and a 3-course lunch every day, ferries to islands, a knowledgeable guide, etc. it turns into quite a good deal for a trip that’s fully taken care of!

Several of the small ship cruises in Croatia are only offered between June to September, which is when the weather is best and when most people visit Croatia.

If you ask me though, the best time to go on a cruise in Croatia is during the shoulder seasons of late spring (May to June) and autumn (September to October). These months offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed atmosphere.

In spring, Croatia begins to awaken from its winter slumber. Temperatures gradually rise and nature comes to life. You can expect milder temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to low 70s Fahrenheit (15-23 degrees Celsius), making it perfect for exploring the coastal towns, islands, and national parks without the summer heat.

Autumn is equally nice, with comfortable temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit (15-24 degrees Celsius). The summer crowds have dispersed, allowing for a more serene cruising experience. And the sea, which can be chilly in spring, is perfect for swimming and water sports in early autumn.

Croatia’s summer months (July and August) are peak tourist season due to the warm weather, school holidays, and numerous festivals . While summer offers great opportunities for swimming and beach activities, it can be crowded and prices tend to be higher.

I would only recommend traveling to Croatia in July and August if you’re tied to school holidays.

Different Types of Cruises in Croatia

What I didn’t realize when I first started researching cruising in Croatia is that not only are there different types of boats (different sizes, levels of comfort, etc), but that it’s also important to choose a cruise that caters to a demographic that fits you.

So, before you book your 2024 Croatia cruise based solely on the looks of the boat and offered itinerary, consider who the different cruises cater to.

1. The Croatia Party Cruise

Croatia actually has quite a reputation for its party cruises.

Especially among young Australians, it seems almost like a right of passage to come to Europe and go on a party cruise in Croatia.

Two of the most famous companies offering party cruises in Croatia are Contiki and Topdeck.

I’d say they are most suitable for people aged 18 to 25.

It’s a great way to meet other young travelers and have lively nights out in different ports. The tour guides on these ships are normally great at getting the party started and taking you to the best bars and clubs.

Themed parties are often organized (pirate night is a popular one) and it’s generally just a very fun, lively boat trip.

Of course you’ll also have great daytime activities including swim stops, sightseeing, checking out beaches and beach bars, etc.

A lot of the wooden boats you see in Croatia are used for this type of cruise. They are less luxurious than the other small ship cruises but also less expensive. They are a bit smaller as well, accommodating about 18 to 25 people, and cabins will have two bunk beds instead of twin or double beds.

2 The Young Professionals’ Cruise

Fjaka Sail is one of the cruise organizers that noticed an “in-between group” for whom a suitable cruise in Croatia was hard to find.

Fjakasail:  ”We realized that there are lots of small ship cruises for young people that tend to draw gap year students, and lots of cruises for older adults, but not many for the in-between age where you still like to have fun and go out but not quite on the teenager level. That’s where we come in. We offer affordable luxury Croatia sailing tours for the slightly older demographic of young people – who prefer a nice cocktail over a crowded bar, plenty of culture and adventure to balance the party, and a nice, comfortable boat (with a rooftop jacuzzi).”

I’d say Fjakasail is most suitable for people aged 25 to 35.

Age is just a number of course, so it mainly depends on what type of experience you are looking for.

Fjaka Sail, and Koda Sail, who target a similar demographic, tend to combine partying with sightseeing.

There is definitely still quite a focus on enjoying nights out. And I have to admit I’ve been to more clubs during my one-week sailing in Croatia with Fjaka Sail than I’d been to in several years.

But, there is less partying going on on the boat and there is plenty of space and flexibility to do your own thing, enjoy sightseeing, a quiet dinner ashore, etc.

3. The High-End Luxury Cruise

If you’re looking for a luxury cruise, there are definitely some great small ship cruises in Croatia for you.

Kompas is one of the best-known operators here with beautiful luxury boats.

They say their age range is 8 to 85. This attracts a more diverse crowd, and has more of a focus on culture, sightseeing, and unwinding than the previous two options.

But, a general tip to keep in mind when looking for cruises in Croatia: the more expensive and more comfortable the ship is, the older the demographic. Therefore Kompas attracts an older demographic.

Kompas also offers more diverse itineraries. While many other small ship cruises stick to the Split to Dubrovnik routes, visiting islands and towns in between, Kompas also offers tours to different places such as Plitvice and Zagreb.

Their tours tend to pack in a lot of sights so you get to see a lot, but also move between destinations quickly.

Their boats are very luxurious with beautiful rooms, comfortable lounge and dining areas, delicious food, and often a small pool or jacuzzi.

Another good luxury cruise option is the Infinity .

4. Cruises for All Ages & Families

There are no specific small ship cruises in Croatia that cater solely to families. Nor are there cruises that focus exclusively on the 35+ working professionals demographic.

So if you are traveling as a family or feel like the previously mentioned younger boats or high-end luxury boats are not what you are looking for, then you fall into the mixed category.

On the Go Tours is a popular choice for families and couples looking for a cruise in Croatia. They offer different routes and different classes of boats .

Liveaboard.com is also a good website to find small-ship cruises that cater to a more mixed audience. Although that website was created for liveaboard diving in other parts of the world, in Croatia it actually has a great overview of small ship cruises.

And again the general rule applies: the more expensive and more comfortable the ship is, the older the demographic.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly small ship cruise that caters to a more mixed crowd (not a party boat) check out Katarina Line’s Traditional Ship .

5. A Sailing Cruise

Having recently returned from almost 2 years of sailing in the Caribbean I might be biased, but I’d say there is something special about cruising on a sailboat versus a large motorboat.

Ok, less comfort as well, but if you’re interested in sailing, then choosing a Croatia cruise on a sailboat versus a motorboat might be worth it.

If you’re young and are looking for a party on a sailing cruise in Croatia you have probably heard of Sail Week and Yacht Week. It’s basically a group of sailboats sailing to a different destination every day, with lots of partying going on.

Medsailors is a similar option but tends to be slightly cheaper and slightly less party, although they definitely still cater to a younger audience with plenty of fun and nightlife.

If you’re past that stage in life, there are several luxury sailboats you can join to cruise Croatia.

Intrepid Travel has sailing yachts between 48 and 52 feet, offering sailing tours from Split to Dubrovnik and from Dubrovnik to Split .

G Adventures has a beautiful 54-foot sailing yacht that offers both tours within Croatia and from Croatia to Italy (and vice-versa).

6. Cruising and Cycling

If you’d love to combine cruising in Croatia with cycling, check out UTrecks .

UTrecks is a well-known outdoor adventure company. In Croatia they offer several bike & boat tours that combine daily cycling routes with a cruise. They cater to all ages, including families with kids.

7. The Large International Cruise

Most people who want to go cruising in Croatia choose a small ship cruise.

Small ship cruises can dock in the smaller ports therefore allowing you to visit different coastal towns and islands in Croatia. The large cruise ships can’t access all the ports the small ship cruises can, so you’ll miss out on some of the smaller ports.

But, larger cruise ships can cover larger distances.

If you want to visit several countries on one cruise, or if you’d like to have more facilities onboard the cruise, then a larger cruise can be a great choice for you.

Cruisedirect offers various larger cruises that include Croatia.

8. A Private Cruise

Many of the small ships in Croatia can be booked as a private cruise. But of course, that means you either have to get a group of 20 or more people together, or be willing to fork out quite a bit of money to book the entire cruise.

A more common option is to charter a smaller motor yacht or sailboat. These can be rented with a captain, or without if you have the credentials to sail yourself.

This way of cruising in Croatia gives you the most freedom, and a better opportunity to see more off-the-beaten-path places.

Chartering a yacht is a popular choice for families but also great for a group of friends.

I’ve even seen posts in sailing groups and travel related groups on Facebook asking for people to charter a yacht together.

Apart from having the freedom to choose where to sail to, one of the biggest advantages of chartering a yacht is that you are free to choose how long you sail. I’d say 4 nights can give you a good taste of the Croatian islands.

But I could spend months sailing around Croatia with all of its beautiful islands and coastal towns. Yes, an extended sailing trip is still on my bucket list!

Another advantage is that reservations for more authentic experiences become a lot easier. On my recent small ship cruise we were a group of 25. That limited us to larger restaurants that often catered largely to tourists.

Chartering is also a good way to learn more about sailing from your captain, if that’s something you want.

But, there are downsides to chartering a smaller yacht as well.

Smaller boats are more limited by the weather. High waves and strong winds will at some point affect any boat, but a small yacht is affected quicker. This means you might not be able to get to a planned destination or you might be in for a bumpy ride.

And if you’re prone to seasickness, you’ll be a lot more likely to get seasick on a small private yacht than on any of the cruises.

Where Will You Go on Your Small Ship Cruise in Croatia?

This is honestly where I was a little disappointed with the standard small ship cruises.

I know I’m not your standard traveler ( I live on a small boat , so I have a lot of experience exploring places by boat), but I really assumed that by being on a small ship cruise we would visit more off-the-beaten-path destinations.

That’s not the case.

Most Croatian small ship cruises sail between Split and Dubrovnik, in the south of Croatia. These cruises tend to visit Central and Southern Dalmatian islands such as Vis, Hvar, Brac, Korcula, and Mljet.

These are some of the most popular tourist destinations in Croatia , receiving a lot of visitors, who come here either on a cruise or by ferry. Especially in July and August these destinations get very crowded and have, in my opinion, lost a bit of their authenticity.

That being said, they offer great tourist facilities ranging from restaurants to shops, water sports activities, daily tours, nightclubs, etc.

Because most small ship cruises stick to the same destinations you’re likely to run into the same boats in different ports.

I would say, if you want to visit off-the-beaten-path destinations, you’re better off booking a private cruise.

But if you want to see the main tourist destinations with a group of like-minded travelers, then the small ship cruises are a great option.

What Does a Typical Day on a Small Ship Cruise Look Like?

Of course this depends a bit on which of the different types of small ship Croatian cruises you book, but generally the small ship cruises are 8 days and 7 nights.

After boarding the ship on the first morning you’ll immediately set sail to your first destination while being served lunch onboard.

From then on, every day follows a similar pattern. Before breakfast is served the boat has generally already set sail to its next destination. So you get to enjoy breakfast while sailing past a beautiful island or a bit of coastline.

If the weather allows it the ship will anchor in a nice sheltered spot so that everyone can jump into the water and enjoy a swim.

After the swim stop the boat will sail to its next port while you get to enjoy a 3-course lunch.

This is generally also when the tour guide provides some information about the next port, the walking tour he or she may offer there, and all the other activities that can be enjoyed.

Once docked the rest of the day and night are spent at this new destination. Depending on the type of small ship cruise you are on you might join an excursion, go to the beach, join a communal dinner at a local restaurant, or get ready for a big night out.

Dinners are generally ashore, although on some nights dinner aboard the boat may be offered, such as a welcome dinner or a captain’s dinner.

Shore Excursions on a Cruise in Croatia

Most small ship cruises offer optional shore excursions at various ports.

These excursions allow you to explore the local attractions, historical sites, and natural beauty of Croatia.

From wine tasting to zip lining, hiking, etc.

I recommend reviewing the available shore excursions beforehand . And if nothing is offered by the ship in a specific port then you could do some research yourself to see what activities you could do at that destination.

For example, some destinations offer great water sports while other destinations are perfect for renting a bicycle to explore the area. Bigger towns offer walking tours or food experiences. But some of these activities are best booked slightly in advance (even if it’s just 1 day).

Final Thoughts About Cruising in Croatia

Croatia is known for its stunning islands and coastal towns. And with so many islands to explore it makes complete sense that cruising in Croatia is incredibly popular.

A small ship cruise offers a relaxed vacation and an easy way to get a glimpse of different parts of Croatia.

Small ships do tend to all visit mainly the same (touristy) locations which makes the ports crowded, especially in July and August, and the towns feel a little less authentic.

If you want a more off-the-beaten-path experience, charter a yacht . But if you want a carefree, fun-filled trip with lots of beautiful swim stops, go on a small ship cruise!

A Few Final Tips When Going on a Small Ship Cruise in Croatia

• Choose a cabin above deck if your budget allows it. The cabins below deck are cheaper, but they generally have no windows that can be opened which makes them a bit stuffy. And of course the cabins above deck have a much nicer view.
• Know that cruises are always weather dependent . Itineraries may change because of the weather. Swim stops might have to be skipped because the sea is too rough, and you could even end up going to a different port than planned for various reasons. From my experience though, every captain and crew will do whatever they can to give you the best possible experience!  
• Make sure you have travel insurance . Of course, we always hope nothing goes wrong when we travel but well, sometimes things happen. If you don’t have suitable travel insurance yet I recommend reading this article about what to look for in travel insurance .  
• There will be wifi but you’re on a boat and often in more remote locations, so don’t expect too much. During my recent cruise wifi was often slow or barely working. If you really need internet, bring a sim card with enough data. That won’t work perfectly in remote locations either, but I found it to be better than the boat’s wifi.  
• Bring sea sickness medication . Although generally the bigger the boat the less likely you are to feel seasick, I’ve seen several people get seasick on larger cruises. I recommend Dramamine . And don’t wait until you are feeling seasick. If you are likely to get seasick, or know the weather will get rougher, take it as early as possible to prevent seasickness.

The beautifully sheltered Adriatic Sea, running between the east coast of Italy and the coast of the former Yugoslavia and Greece, is a cultural gem, the coastline dotted with ancient city states, trading posts and bishoprics. Read on for our pick of the best small ship cruises to Croatia and the Adriatic.

En route to Venice , Phoenicians, Greeks and all the maritime traders of the ancient world plied these waters, bringing wealth and culture to settlements all along the coast. Our fleet consists of motor vessels constructed from either wood or steel, and they are available in various sizes, shapes, and categories. Even though some are more than a hundred years old, they have undergone several renovations to adapt them for tourism. In the past, these boats were primarily used for cargo transportation. However, most of the steel or iron yachts we offer are either brand new or have been constructed recently.

Although our vessels are occasionally called sailing ships, they are primarily powered by engines. It’s essential to note that several of our steel boats do not possess masts and sails at all.

If privacy, luxury, and comfort are essential to you, you may want to consider selecting a vessel from the Premium Superior or Premium categories. Alternatively, the Traditional Ensuite vessels would be more suitable for younger passengers, including friends or special interest groups like alpinists or bikers, who are comfortable sharing small spaces and bathrooms for an extended period. However, it’s important to note that Traditional Ensuite vessels typically do not have air-conditioned cabins, and most have bunk beds.

The number of passengers per vessel can range from 20 to 40 individuals, depending on the size of the boat.

The electrical outlets found in the cabins of our vessels in Croatia are standard Type F sockets, which have two pins and are grounded. These outlets are compatible with plug types C, E, and F and can deliver a power output of 16 A and 220 V. Some newer vessels may also feature USB sockets.

Fishing equipment is not provided on the boat, but passengers are welcome to bring their own gear. However, it’s crucial to note that obtaining special permission for fishing is required from specialized agencies in harbors.

Snorkeling equipment may not always be available on the ship. It is recommended to bring your own gear if you plan to go snorkeling.

All vessels are equipped with life-saving boats and life jackets found in designated wardrobes on the deck, in the salon, or under beds in the cabins. If you cannot swim, you need to inform the crew and captain. Additionally, passengers must be mindful of the following safety guidelines while on board: 

• Take caution when navigating the steep and narrow staircases on the vessel. The decks may also be slippery, particularly in damp conditions, so passengers should hold onto the railings and watch their step.
• Climbing the foremast, jumping off the deck during the cruise, or swimming too far from the vessel during swim breaks are strictly prohibited. 
• During the busy peak season, harbors can be crowded, and vessels may have to dock alongside one another, so passengers must be vigilant when moving between them. Crew members are available to assist passengers, but the cruise is not recommended for individuals with limited mobility or those in wheelchairs.

While the tap water on the ships is of good quality, it is not advised to drink it. A water dispenser is available, complete with reusable glasses. Passengers are encouraged to bring their own refillable bottles. Use the available water on board wisely.

The primary currency accepted on the ship and throughout Croatia is the Euro, but it is advisable to exchange money at a bank or withdraw cash from an ATM where possible. The local currency is required for drinks onboard and all additional services such as transfers, excursions, and accommodation. Premium and Premium Superior vessels offer credit card payment options.

While ATMs linked to international networks are available in major towns and islands like Opatija, Dubrovnik, and Split, smaller ones may not have ATM facilities. Most tourist areas accept major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard, but it is recommended to have some cash on hand if you plan to travel off the beaten path.

Tips are not included in the tour price, and they are discretionary. They are usually given to show appreciation for good service and satisfaction with the crew, guide, and overall tour. If you choose to tip, it is recommended to use your own currency or Euro, and the crew gratuities are equally distributed among all members.

The sea temperature typically averages 24.5°C during July and August, while the air temperature during the same period averages 28°C. For spring and autumn departures, it is advisable to pack some warmer clothes, such as a sports-fitting windbreaker, to prepare for cooler evenings.

Cabins on Premium Superior and Premium ships come with either twin or double beds, and some can accommodate up to three people with an additional bed above or beside the double bed. However, it’s important to note that bed availability is limited, and we cannot guarantee a specific type. We do, however, aim to assign cabins based on guest preferences and requests, so please let us know your bed preference when booking, and we will try our best to accommodate it.

Cabins on Premium and Premium Superior ships come with either twin or double beds, with twin beds measuring approximately 90/100 cm x 190/200 cm and double beds measuring around 150/160 cm x 190/200 cm. Traditional Ensuite cabins often have bunk beds, but twin or double beds may also be available on some vessels. Double beds in these cabins are typically 130/140 cm x 190/200 cm, while bunk beds are about 80/90 cm x 190/200 cm in size.

The ship’s cabins are distributed on two levels, the deck and the lower deck. The on-deck ones can be found either on the main or upper deck, while below-deck cabins are in the ship’s hull. Rooms on the deck provide the advantage of direct access to the sea and better ventilation, while cabins below the deck may be quieter since only passengers who booked lower deck cabins pass by. These cabins are also comfortable due to their location at sea level, which keeps them naturally cool, and the below-deck hallways are typically air-conditioned, affecting the temperature. Lower-deck cabins usually come with small portholes.

Lower deck cabins are located in the boat’s hull and usually have a small porthole, but Croatian law and vessel regulations require them to be closed while sailing to prevent water from entering the cabin. The portholes can be opened when the boat is docked. However, on newer ships like those in the Premium Superior and Premium categories, which have air-conditioned cabins and steel hulls, the portholes are fixed and cannot be opened.

The frequency of cabin cleaning depends on the vessel category. On Premium Superior and Premium vessels, the cabin service is daily. You’ll also receive fresh bed linen when you arrive. However, on Traditional Ensuite category vessels, you’ll be responsible for keeping your room clean because the staff won’t enter your room during the cruise. The crew only cleans the commonly used toilets and bathrooms, and they provide two towels per person. You may request cabin cleaning during the cruise for an extra fee.

Air conditioning is available in Premium Superior and Premium cabins, except for times with limited access to electricity. Traditional Ensuite cabins do not have air conditioning, but lower deck hallways and salons typically do. Air conditioning is only operational when the motor or generator is running, or the vessel is connected to shore power while docked at the harbor. In certain smaller fishing harbors without electricity, air conditioning may be turned off to maintain a tranquil environment.

If you plan to sleep on the deck and enjoy the stars, it is suggested to bring a sleeping bag, as removing mattresses, pillows, and sheets from cabins is prohibited.

The boats have limited capacities for electricity and water. While there is a generator on board for generating electricity, it is not operational during the night or while the boat is in a quiet bay to prevent noise pollution. The water tanks on board have sufficient capacity to match the number of cabins and beds, and they are always filled with enough water, provided that everyone uses water conservatively. Moreover, the vessels are fitted with central heating systems that offer hot water.

During your cruise, you can enjoy meals that feature typical Croatian cuisine. The Premium Superior and Premium vessels offer a breakfast buffet, while the Traditional Ensuite boats serve a continental breakfast with tea, coffee, fruit juice, bread, butter, jam, and sometimes ham and cheese. You can request an English breakfast when booking or upon arrival. Lunch is a three-course meal with a salad bar and cheese plate on deluxe ships and three-course lunch on premium and traditional vessels. The cruise company recommends that passengers explore local restaurants for dinner, which is not included.

The “captain’s dinner” is a weekly event hosted by the captain, where guests and crew can socialize while having an optional fish or meat dinner. It is included in the deluxe and premium vessel categories. However, if you are on a Traditional Ensuite or Traditional vessel, you can arrange and pay for the dinner during booking or at the event. The dress code for the “Captain’s dinner” is Elegant/Smart Casual.

As our onboard kitchen has limited space, we may not be able to prepare special meals for individuals with specific dietary needs, like vegetarians. However, if you have any dietary restrictions or preferences, please inform us during the booking process, and our onboard chef will make arrangements to accommodate your needs to the best of their ability.

It is not allowed to bring and consume your own drinks on the ship. However, you can buy various alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages from the vessel’s salon, which functions as a restaurant, living room, and bar. In case the drink of your preference is not available at the moment, kindly notify the crew, and they will try their best to procure it for you at the next stop.

The onboard bar accepts payments for drinks made in Euros. At the end of the trip, guests will receive a report showing the total amount spent on drinks, which can be settled during the checkout process. For guests on deluxe and premium vessels, credit card payments are also accepted.

We were lucky to have excellent shipmates and weather. The crew of the ship were friendly and pleased to assist if needed. Each day was was planned to please a multitude of interests. I loved our daily swims in the Adriatic Sea. The tours were informative and there was always time to do some exploring on our own. The Oyster tasting and Captains dinner …..with live entertainment….was a lot of fun. All the meals were excellent.

Croatia’s rocky coastline stretches for more than 1,000 miles along the eastern edges of the Adriatic Sea, from just south of Italy’s Trieste to Montenegro. Countless craggy limestone islands are scattered along the jagged coast, creating one of world’s most scenic places to cruise — right up there with Norway’s fjords, Alaska’s glaciers, and the Greek Isles.

We’re lucky that many spectacular and well-preserved relics remain, from fourth-century palaces to medieval fortresses, cathedrals and classic turreted city walls. The most spectacular — Dubrovnik’s City Walls, Diocletian’s Palace in Split and Hvar’s Old Town — are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

You’ll also find memorials and dedications to the Croatian War of Independence from 1991 to 1995, during which the country was entrenched in a civil war with Serbian forces while striving to secede from the former Yugoslavia. When you visit the gorgeous towns and villages along the coast today, it’s mind-boggling to consider that not too long ago this was a war-torn region.

Croatia Cuisine

All along the Dalmatian coast are regions known for wine and olive oil. Seafood is also especially good here, too, from oysters to squid, octopus, mussels and fish, the later served grilled or in a traditional stew.

Many of the yachts used are “gulets,” a Turkish term derived from the French word “goélette” and the Italian “goletta.”

These traditional-style 2- and 3-masted yachts are based on vessels that were once used as trading and fishing boats. Katarina line.

This family-owned line has operating for some 30 years offers a broad range of cruising styles and lengths on more than 60 small ships that are chartered from Croatian captains who provide a special personal touch to your yachting experience. They can also help with hotel bookings and other tourist services for a stay in Croatia.

Katarina Line offers Deluxe, Premium or Standard cruises roundtrip or one way traveling among the ports of Split, Dubrovnik and Opatija, as well as special Active cruises and Land and Cruise combos.

Ships sail for about four hours each day, overnighting in ports and sailing just after breakfast each day.

The scenic sailing takes you to intimate bays and swimming areas, where you anchor for a bit of swim time and water sports before lunch onboard. Then, you continue on to the next port stop for your exploration ashore, dinner on your own with your fellow travelers and an overnight on the ship.

The Standard cruise category attracts budget travelers, often younger folks and backpackers, generally, ages 18 to 35.

Katarina Line’s newer Deluxe and Premium ships see passengers typically in the 40 to 60-ish age range. Travelers represent a fairly international mix, though with mostly English-speaking couples from the U.S., U.K., Europe and Australia.

Goolets’ charters are luxury small ship experiences with typically eight to 12 passengers on a sailing paying at least $1,200 USD per person for a week of cruising along the Adriatic Coast.

The line offers packages on three ships including a range of seven-night cruises along Croatia’s coast , embarking in Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar or Porec. These Kompas voyages are priced from around $2,000 USD per person for cabins with private facilities.

There are sailings on two new ships with private balconies — Premier and My Wish , the best in the fleet. Kompas rates their third ship, Prestige, as a 3-star yacht compared to the 4-star Premier and My Wish.

Cruises include departure airport transfers, daily breakfasts and lunches, welcome reception, Captain’s dinner with local entertainment, and one or two dinners at a restaurant in port or on board (based on the cruise program). Coffee, tea, bottled water, and WiFi are also included in the fares.

• Elegance cruises are ideal for couples and more mature travelers who want a bit of luxury on their coastal jaunts, which feature the highest level of comfort and inclusions aboard the line’s newest ships (with in-room bathroom and air conditioning). These voyages are the priciest (around $1,150 for a weeklong sailing) and feature exclusive excursions like traditional village dinners and historic walking tours.
• Explorer itineraries are good for couples in the 30- to 60ish-age range, mostly from the U.S., U.K. and Australia, who desire a mix of relaxing and sightseeing.

All cruise fares include buffet breakfast, three-course lunches featuring Croatian dishes (with a meat- or fish-based main course prepared fresh by the onboard chef), a captain’s dinner event, tour guide and WiFi.

You can also choose to add on optional excursions. Drinks are extra, and dinners are on your own as you overnight in the ports.

On Elegance cruises, airport transfers are also included as well as a captains’ dinner and a local village dinner.

Sail Croatia Ships  

• Sail Croatia offers Standard category ships for Navigator cruises. These vessels carry about 30 passengers, and the cabins feature bunk beds. Bathroom facilities are shared, with about five or six passengers per bathroom.
• The line’s Ensuite category ships for Navigator and Active cruises also have bunk beds and carry up to 30 passengers on average. These rooms have their own bathrooms.
• Premier category ships are used for certain Active and Navigator sailings.  These vessels carry up to 36 passengers who enjoy more space and comfort, with private bathrooms with showers and air conditioning.
• Sail Croatia’s Premier Plus category ships are used for the Elegance and Explorer cruises.  These yachts comprise the line’s newest and offer the best in comfort and luxury. These are the largest cabins in the fleet at around 130 square feet. The ships carry 38 passengers on average.

Sail Croatia runs three-, five- and seven-day Navigator cruises, as well as weeklong Explorer, Elegance and Active voyages that sail between Dubrovnik and Split.

Itineraries visit destinations such as Makarska, Hvar, Stari Grad, Vis, Korcula and Mljet.

They all include half board service (breakfast and lunch or dinner). Additional services included (guided tours, transfers arrival and departure, wine tasting, …) depend on a chosen category.

Most of our Adriatic cruises have regular departures every Saturday between May and October, but some also leave ports on Wednesday or Sunday. Majority focuses on the popular southern Dalmatian islands (Hvar, Brač , Mljet, …), but we also offer cruises to less known northern islands ( Kvarner Bay and Kornati archipelago ).

My 7 Favorite Cruises In And Around Europe

W hat I love most about cruising around Europe is the huge choice in types of cruises you can go on. Because Europe includes hot and sunny destinations like Spain and Italy, and cold and interesting places like Scandinavia and Scotland, you can take a very different cruise each time around Europe. You can pull up in pretty ports in Greece and swim from the boat and you can sail around the shores of Scotland and take a cold water plunge — if you’re brave enough. 

The coastlines of Europe are vastly different to one another and the types of cruises you can take are too. River cruises, yachts, island cruises, and large fun-packed cruise lines all sail around these shores. Plus, you can start your cruise in Europe and sail off beyond the continent, and then return after an adventure. 

Here are my 7 favorite cruises in and around Europe.

1. Starclippers

Rome round trip .

This seven-night cruise begins and ends in Rome, visiting Lipari, Sicily, Amalfi, Sorrento, and Ponza. What I love about the Starclipper cruises is they are informal and casual — you dine with other guests or by yourself, you don’t have a set table for meals, and you can wear what you like as there’s no dress code. But at the same time, the interior of the ship and the cabins are sophisticated and semi luxurious, so it feels casual and chic all in one go. 

This particular cruise is on the Starflyer , which has two pools and a sun deck. There’s no entertainment on board, though there might be some games in the evening, but children are welcome over the age of 6 months. I love these small-yacht ships that can get you into ports the larger cruise ships can’t, and this one is a beautiful ship with an atmosphere of relaxation and easygoingness. You can even join with the crew and help to sail the ship if you like.

2. French Waterways

Hotel barge prospérité: côte d’or.

If you like things really intimate, you can book a six- or eight-person cruise with French Waterways and have the barge to yourselves. This one is a canal cruise in France, but they also offer river cruises. The rooms on the barge are hotel standard and there’s a sun deck and a hot tub on board. The cruise ambles along the canals in the Côte d’Or, stopping off for a walking tour in Dijon, shopping and markets, and wine tasting at a vineyard. 

This is a really relaxing way to cruise in France with family or friends, but you can’t book onto this cruise as a single person or a couple. This is a chartered barge that is priced for the maximum number of people it sleeps — six or eight. If you’re experienced, you can also choose to pilot the boat yourself.

3. G Adventures

Sailing from split to dubrovnik.

Sailing along the Dalmatian Coast is a unique experience and visiting Croatia is a trip full of historical sites and exploration. The yachts you’ll travel on with G Adventures give you a truly small-boat experience. If you want a luxurious cabin and lush interiors, this isn’t for you, but if you want a sense of adventure and an authentic sailing experience, this is definitely it. 

The yacht accommodates a maximum of eight people, but you don’t have to be a part of the group, you can book onto this as a single person or couple. Note: If you book a solo trip, you will be sharing your cabin with someone else. It’s also worth noting that you’ll need a medium level of physical fitness to take part in the activities on this tour, which can include kayaking and hiking. 

This is a self-catering trip, and while there’s plenty of opportunities to eat at the destinations, there aren’t any meals offered on board. This also means that when you eat your own food on the ship and/or cook for yourself in the kitchen, you are expected to tidy up after.

4. Hebridean Adventures

Hebridean island odyssey.

Sailing on board the MV Hjalmar Bjørge with the Northern Light Cruising Company, Hebridean Adventures brings you a trip like no other around the Hebrides Islands in Scotland. This nine-night cruise stops at Mull, Coll & Tiree, the Small Isles, and the Isle of Skye. Most people who take this cruise are wildlife enthusiasts and are sailing with the hope of spotting dolphins, puffins, eagles, and more. But even if you only have a passing interest in wildlife, this is a stunning way to get a bit closer to it. 

Facilities are limited on board and the cabins are no-frills, with some only including bunk beds. You do have to share bathroom facilities, which is a challenge for some people, but guests are all aware of this and are very considerate. The onboard chef is a real plus on this cruise and they cater for any dietary requirements, cooking all meals fresh every day. The boat might be basic, but the scenery is breathtaking and it’s a unique type of cruise.

5. Celebrity Cruises

Egypt & israel.

Beginning in Athens, Greece, this 10-night cruise with Celebrity Cruises will stop off at Israel and Egypt before returning to Athens. There are 3 days at sea on this cruise, and on board the Celebrity Infinity , there’s a casino, an art gallery, a sun deck, indoor and outdoor pool areas, a spa, tennis, nightlife, and restaurants and bars. 

This is a large cruise ship experience with capacity for 2,170 people. Rooms are hotel standard, some with verandas, and the experience of being on the ship is as much a part of the trip as exploring the stop-off destinations. The cruise gives you the perfect mix between Europe and a little further afield. For anyone who hasn’t strayed beyond Europe before, it’s a great way to get a taste of Egypt and Israel.

6. Variety Cruises

Italy & malta.

Beginning in Naples and sailing along the coast of Italy and around its islands, this small boat intimate cruise with Variety Cruises ends on the 8th day in Malta. At first, I thought it was unusual to end in a totally different place than where the cruise began, but actually, I loved the chance to get to know somewhere separate from the starting point. 

The ship has capacity for 44 people and is a laid-back experience with just a sundeck, informal restaurant, bar, and swim platform. Most of your time is spent off the boat, exploring parts of Italy tourists don’t usually visit, and that’s the real draw with these small-boat cruises. These are ports large cruise ships can’t enter, so you feel like you’re on a voyage of discovery. Rooms are comfortable and pleasantly decorated and designed, but you won’t be spending much time in them. The Italian islands and Malta are beautiful places to explore.

7. Princess Cruises

Grand 11-day mediterranean.

This big cruise ship experience with Princess Cruises begins in Rome and travels to Greece, Turkey, Sicily, and Mallorca, ending in Barcelona, Spain. Aboard the Sun Princess ship, it’s all about fun on a large scale, with climbing walls, swimming pools, a spa, bars, cafés, restaurants, evening entertainment, and kids clubs. 

It is aimed at families and there’s lots for all ages to do, but it’s also a great cruise to take as a couple or by yourself. There’s something going on all the time, but you can still find some quiet time on the sun deck. There’s 3 days at sea on this 11-day cruise and you’ll certainly never get bored. I love the stop-offs and visits to four different countries, with some really diverse excursions offered at every stop.
