it was a wonderful journey. A beautiful route with breathtaking viewpoints. Excellent hotels and good guidance and support from Iberia Tours. Highly recommended!

Mallorca: Cycling Paradise Tour

Mallorca: Cycling Paradise

The over all experience was fine, excellent hotels, first class bikes and the navigation system fairly good. My negative comments are the information flow and guidence, especially in the beginning, how to check in to the tour, the reception and so forth. We had expected ore formally start and some advice according to this special route. It was a need for this in relation to utility of battery function and consuming of power. We had some problems in the Tramuntana, near Sierra de Tramuntana, ran out of electricity and a little help to get from the organizer. We had the general feeling in the tour that we were more or less on our own. That can also be good

Ojos Negros Spain’s longest greenway in 4 stages

We did this trip with some friends and it was a wonderful experience. We really enjoyed the electric bikes, they are a lot of fun and give you a great help when you need it. We followed the route that Santi made for us. The environment is beautiful, the natural park of Sierra Calderona is spectacular. They have everything very organized and they are very nice. All we had to do was pedal, eat and enjoy! A highly recommended experience

Cycle Southern Spain - Murcia

This was a tour averaging about 40k per day with few hills so there was lots of time for sightseeing and relaxing. We spent most of our time in small towns with few tourists which meant that food and wine was generally excellent value. The riding was pleasant on mostly quiet roads with few traffic issues.

Cycling the Camino de Santiago - Roncesvalles to Santiago Tour

Cycling the Camino de Santiago - Roncesvalles to Santiago

Completely enjoyed every aspect of this trip. The route was incredibly scenic and diverse, giving us an excellent appreciation of northern Spain. The ExperiencePlus! model of marking the roads with a chalk-type substance every morning made navigating through the countryside and towns very easy and enjoyable - I don't think I had to pull out a map once to find my way. Our nightly accommodations included a variety of old castles, refurbished monasteries, country B and Bs, and 4-5 star hotels; each one was unique and superb. Our guides truly enhanced the experience; all were well versed in the historical significance of the areas we traversed and the Camino itself, and between them I think they spoke 6 languages. They did a fantastic job accommodating the individual requirements of each guest - from special dietary considerations to suggestions for additional biking miles or points of interest. The restaurants for our group meals all served traditional dishes and local wines that were fantastic! What a very special trip!!

Andalucia Cycling: Seville to Córdoba in 7 days Tour

Andalucia Cycling: Seville to Córdoba in 7 days

Absolutely Amazing. A wet spring provided for an abundance of wild flowers and beautiful green hills. This area of Spain is hilly, so if you like hills… this is a great trip. If you don’t, no worries, get an e-bike. The history and culture of this area is very interesting and Experience Plus does a very good job of weaving cultural experience into your riding tour.

Spain is the second most toured country in the world. This country is known for miles of beautiful Mediterranean coastline ranging from the rocky Costa Brava to the white sand of Costa Blanca.

Cycling is an uncomplicated, convenient way to tour Spain’s unique history, with countless monuments, ruins, castles and cathedrals. Spain boasts the second most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world.

Find a diverse landscape with miles of dedicated bike paths and minimal traffic. Cycling conditions are optimal for bike touring, with warm, sunny weather and easily understood signage. Spain is also home to the famous Camino de Santiago walking path, perfect for cycle touring.

“The villages were full of nice people, historical castles and churches. I enjoyed the towns by the Mediterranean Sea and going to the beaches. I liked the narrow old streets lined with little shops and walking the wall built around the city.”

As a pair of Dutch girls, I guess we can say that cycling is more or less in our blood! Our adventures have taken us around the world, and more often than not, we’ve enjoyed the sights from the saddle of our trusty bicycles. However, I’ve got to say that bike touring in Spain for a month was one of my favorite bicycle trips of all time!

Cycling in Spain is perhaps the best way to see this incredible country. The sleepy, rustic villages shouldn’t be rushed through, and riding through the beautiful sunshine through the awesome scenery is pure joy! There are a number of official bicycle tours in Spain, with well-signed routes traveling along mostly vehicle-free tracks.

Plus, the weather is almost always gorgeous, with long sunny days well into autumn. It’d be amazing to do a full bike tour of Spain if time allowed, and it’s something we’ve dreamed of! But, for something a little more manageable, the following 7 bike touring routes in Spain are absolutely spectacular.

So, saddle up and let’s find out more!

1. Ruta De La Plata (The Silver Route)

Cycling in Spain through the historical town of Sevilla

  • Total distance: 936 km (582 miles)
  • Total elevation: 20,954 m (68,750 ft)

Also known as the Way of St. James, this is an astounding route for soaking up both sunshine and a little Spanish history. Passing through breathtaking scenery, the route travels south to north, through western Spain, from Seville up to Gijón on the Bay of Biscay. It follows one of the oldest Roman trade routes in the country, taking in a number of charming, historic towns and villages.

Along the way, there are countless opportunities to spend a day out of the saddle, exploring ancient ruins, castles, churches, and amphitheaters. The route follows cycle paths for much of the way and, for the most part, avoids busy roads entirely. Passing through calm, rolling countryside with some climbing along the way, you don’t have to be super fit to complete the route. However, you’ll probably enjoy it more if you’ve done a little training in advance.

With plenty of charming cities and towns to stop off at along the way, you can really take your time with this route. It can normally be completed within 9 days of around 100 km (60 miles) each, though it’s easy to break it down or speed it up. There’s a slightly different version of this trail, which converts it into a pilgrim’s route leading to Santiago rather than Gijón.

2. Camino de Santiago

Camino de Santiago start

  • Total distance: 361km (225 miles)
  • Total elevation: 6,337 m (20,800 ft)

This classic pilgrim’s route is among the oldest cycling routes in Spain . Crossing the north of the country from east to west, the route starts in the beautifully Gothic León. From this stunning start point, the route winds through unspoiled countryside, taking in villages, farms, and medieval monasteries, before culminating in the legendary Santiago.

Along the way you’ll follow the iconic seashell signs as they direct you through a mixed terrain of quiet minor roads, designated cycle routes, and the occasional off-road section. The rural countryside is pretty hilly, and you’ll need a fair level of fitness to enjoy it to the max. However, it’s possible to complete the trip in 6 moderate days, averaging around 54 km (33.5 miles).

The scenery along the route is as magnificent as it is varied, taking in grassy plains, woody mountains, lush green valleys, and rolling farmlands. There are also plenty of opportunities to explore the local area and enjoy the delicacies of the region, from tasty wines to moreish local cheeses.

3. Mallorca Coast to Coast

mallorca coast biketouring

  • Total distance: 100 km (147 miles)
  • Total elevation: 1,580 m (5,183 ft)

Mallorca is a stunningly beautiful island to go cycling in Spain and perhaps best known for its luxurious sandy beaches. However, there’s much more to discover on this Paradise Island, and this cycling route takes in all of the best sights. It offers a wonderful mix of coastal areas and the inland foothills of the Tramuntana mountains.

With tons of amazing family-run hotels and guesthouses on the island, it’s easy to adapt the route to your preference, with a fantastic place to stop each night. Most of the going is flat, on quiet, tarmac routes, with the occasional off-road sections. But take care on the couple of steep climbs you pass. Most days you can enjoy around 40 km (25 miles) of leisurely cycling, with plenty of time to enjoy the sights.

The route typically starts from the airport and ends in the beautiful cap Formenta. In between, you’ll visit sleepy rural villages, tranquil beaches, and cycle through unspoiled countryside. Mountain views abound, even though there are no real climbs on this route.

4. the way of el cid.

The Way of El Cid start biketouring

  • Total distance: 1,100 km (685 miles)
  • Total elevation: 18,740 m (61,480 ft)

You’ll be cycling in the footsteps of legends on this incredible Spanish cycle route. Rodrigo Diaz, or El Cid, was a medieval knight in the 11th century, and remains a national hero. This cycle route follows his epic journey from Burgos to Valencia, crossing through an amazingly varied landscape.

Along the way you’ll ride through quaint, medieval villages, unspoiled countryside, mountains and valleys, and conquer hilltop fortresses. The main route takes in 1,100 km (685 miles), but there are a number of interesting side routes that are worth considering if you have time. These circular routes take in various additional historic sights and majestic landscapes, and increase the total route to around 2,000 km (1,245 miles).

Valencia coast

There are actually 2 different routes you can take; the paved route, or the mountain bike route. Both are well signed, and avoid busy roads for the most part. Mostly the going is easy to moderate, with the occasional climb. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, and you can split the journey up as it suits you, with 5 to 6 days being the average time taken.

5. Vía Verde (de la Sierra)

Cycling in Spain Vía Verde de la Sierra Spain Biking

  • Total distance: 36.5 km (23 miles)
  • Total elevation gain: 1,261m (4,135 ft)

Roughly translated to ‘green lanes’, the Vias Verdes stretch for more than 2,200 km in total, all across Spain. After countless failed railway projects, the old tracks were converted into 120 of these impressive routes. They’re well signed, mostly flat, and easily accessible for everyone from hikers and cyclists, to horse riders and even wheelchair users.

When cycling in Spain, they’re a fantastic place to meet fellow travelers, and offer up incredible scenery that takes in everything Spain has to offer. From medieval cities to humble rural villages, through mountain passes to lush green valleys, the green lanes guarantee an incredible adventure.

One of the best routes for cyclists is the Vía Verde de la Sierra from Olvera to Serrano. This fairly easy-going 36.5 km (23 mile) trail takes in 30 tunnels, 4 incredible viaducts, and various medieval villages. The route from Olvera is mostly flat or downhill, making it an easy trail for beginners.

6. Col de Puymorens

Col de Puymorens nature Spain biking

  • Total distance: 176 km (109 miles)
  • Total elevation: 4,144 m (13,595 ft)

This breathtaking looped route takes you on an adventure through the glorious Pyrenees. Winding through the gorgeous Catalonian landscape, you’ll dip briefly into France, before returning to the small Catolonian villages and towns. It’s possible to cycle on paved roads, as well as mountain bike tracks, but both are largely free of motorized traffic.

As such, it’s a peaceful and enjoyable route to cycle, and while there are inclines, there’s nothing too hard going. For the most part, the route is fairly moderate and anyone with a pretty good level of fitness should be okay.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy a wealth of charming towns and villages, and for foodies, incredible cuisine and wine (there are 18 Michelin Star restaurants in the region). The route is well-signed and open throughout the year, though spring and autumn are the best times to visit. There are also plenty of opportunities to leave the official route and explore the surroundings.

7. The Tour of Andalusia Route

Gibraltar Biking Spain

  • Total distance: 267 km (166 miles)
  • Total elevation: 6,733 m (22,089 ft)

This route is fantastic for cycling in Spain and gives you the opportunity to see the treasures of Andalusia in the south of Spain. An area famed for sandy beaches, desert landscapes, gorgeous towns, and awe-inspiring sierras. The route starts in the small town of Malaga, a cultural crossroads and the southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. After exploring Andalusia’s inland gems, you’ll return to the coast, with the route ending in another country: Gibraltar.

Along the way you’ll enjoy breathtaking scenery at almost every turn. Highlights include Ronda, an absolutely stunning mountaintop town, and epic national parks including Sierra de Grazalema. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, and incredible food and drink to enjoy.

The route is quite hard-going at times, with long, steep climbs. A good level of fitness is recommended to enjoy it to the fullest. However, it’s worth the effort, and the rewards are absolutely incredible!

Cyclist in Colombres

Over hills and almost flat country roads you cycle past the coast ranges of El Cuera and El Sueve in the shadow of the impressive peaks of the  Picos de Europa . Passing tiny coves and charming coastal villages, you ride from  Cantabria  into  Asturias . Some of your routes follow sections of the Pilgrims’ Route to Santiago de Compostela so you will find ruins and Romanesque chapels along the way.

Saint James shell

Our itinerary follows this authentic route, which was very popular in the early Middle Ages when pilgrims tried to avoid the constant conflict between Christian and Moorish kingdoms in Central Spain. In this pilgrimage you cycle along the ‘ Green Spain ’, going through varied lanscapes of   Asturias   and   Galicia.

Mallorca lanscape

Brimming with contrasts, Mallorca truly runs the gamut. Gentle hills roll toward seaside cliffs, Mediterranean forests give way to pristine coves and a massive limestone range looms to the west. Embrace this inspiring scenery on easy country routes and more challenging climbs and revel in the island’s heritage, hospitality and cuisine.

Cyclist andalucia

This cycling tour also called ' Ruta de los Olivos ' goes along paths and tranquil roads traversing a sea of olive trees and Mediterranean woods. This less-known area in the North of  Malaga  still preserves most of its enchanting white washed villages, scattered along the slopes of the Sierra Subbética slopes.

BEST TIMES OF THE YEAR

Even though you can go cycling practically all year round, bear in mind that in summer the temperatures can get very high in certain areas (even topping the 35ºC mark). Many cyclists prefer to travel during the low holiday season (avoiding the months of July and August), when the trails are less crowded.

SOME TYPES OF ROUTES

- Vías Verdes (Greenways): these are over 3,200 km of old railways lines that have been converted into bicycle tourism itineraries. More than 120 routes are available with distances greatly varying in length (from 1 to 100 km). You can visit their official website . - Nature trails: there are over 10,300 km of these trails throughout Spain. Among them you will find old railway lines, canals, cattle routes, tracks, etc. On the official website you can download GPS files for several of the suggested routes. - EuroVelo Routes: EuroVelo is a cross-border network of long-distance cycling routes that criss-cross Europe. There are 17 defined routes totalling nearly 90,000 km. Three major routes go through Spain, specifically: EuroVelo 1 Atlantic Coast Route, EuroVelo 3 Pilgrims Route and EuroVelo 8 Mediterranean Route. - In addition to all of these routes, you will find other types of tracks, rural pathways, etc. along the way. - Saddlebag bicycle touring is all the rage if you are into cycling routes that take several days to complete. If you use a hybrid bicycle prepared for carrying loads, you can take your luggage with you.

Tajuña Greenway, in the Region of Madrid

There are particularly famous routes when it comes to bicycle tourism. Here are some examples: - Camino de Santiago : the famous Camino comprises several different routes ending at Santiago de Compostela Cathedral (Galicia), including the French Way, the Primitive Way, the English Way, etc. You might be interested in our report on “St James Way by bike”. - Camino del Cid : this route follows in the footsteps of El Cid Campeador through Castile and Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Aragon and the Region of Valencia. - Canal of Castile : once a major transport artery, this canal is now one of the most attractive routes in Castile and Leon.

Tips and recommendations

- As a general rule, in Spain cyclists are not allowed to ride on motorways (unless otherwise indicated in the signage). - Road rules make the wearing of a reflective garment compulsory at night and in tunnels, as well as the use front and back lights that can be seen at a distance of 50 m.  - When it comes to bicycle tourism, before coming to Spain (and particularly if you are going to do one of the long or more difficult routes) you might choose to join your country's cycling federation and extend your insurance cover to Spain or, you can take out travel insurance that covers medical care and public liability.  - If you are travelling to Spain by plane and want to bring your bike, you must pack it properly. Some companies charge extra for carrying the bicycle. The same thing happens with long-distance coach companies. Keep this in mind before purchasing tickets. - If you are travelling by train, according to the Spanish National Train Network (RENFE), as long as the bike dimensions are greater than those established for hand luggage, they will be admitted in the following services: AVE, Long Distance and Avant for national routes under the following terms and conditions: The bicycle is folded or disassembled in a case with a maximum size of 120 x 90 x 40 cm (length-height-width). The pedals must be disassembled and the handlebars turned 90º. - For more information on bicycle tourism visit the tourist offices in each area or get in touch with their respective cycling federations. You can also visit the website of the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation. Since the recommendations and regulations may change, you should always check the requirements before starting the trip.

The basis of this tourist route is a Roman road that began to be built in the 1st century BC and eventually became one of the main roads linking the north and south of the peninsula. You can see all the stages, tracks and different resources for cyclists on the website or the app!

Passport for cycling "La Ruta en Bici"

The route passport is a freely available personal document for accreditation purposes, which certifies that the holder is touring the Ruta Via de la Plata and enables discounts to be obtained from affiliated businesses. A hard copy of the passport can be obtained at the tourist offices of those municipalities who are members of the association, or via the website.

We had a great trip. The cycling was challenging but well worth the scenery, the views and the white villages we visited. The accommodations were wonderful and the hosts were very pleasant and helpful. The food was very tasty but then how can you go wrong with tapas, cerveza and sangria… Read More

Kathy and I would like to thank Cycling Country for setting up the tour, providing the bikes, maps, information sheets/booklet and directions. Definitely, an A-One job. It was a pleasure meeting Warren, Geoff and Maggie. Otherwise as we said, the trip was great and the organization and preparatory help from Cycling Country was superb. A great big thank you from us both.”

Kingston, Canada

Day 1. ARRIVAL IN BILBAO

Arrive to the cultural city of Bilbao and enjoy your free time to explore the old town and try some pintxos (the Basque equivalent to Tapas). Pass through the fishing port of Laredo and to Santoña famous in Spain for its superb whitebait and anchovies done on a spit in local cafès.  Take a ferry crossing over the river estuary and then a short ride to the beach hotel for today.

spain cycle trip

Spain has been a favourite of holidaymakers for many years, and with good reason – fantastic beaches, a wonderful climate and stunning scenery. It also conjures up many different images, of Flamenco dancers, Tapas bars, Moorish castles and matadors with sweat on their brows.

Toro Blanco’s cycling holiday team will help you discover Andalucía on two wheels. Our cycling holidays in this beautiful region of Spain will guide you through amazing scenery to explore the incredible beauty of hilltop towns, dramatic mountains and huge descents.

Andalucía has a rich and varied history which can be seen in the many styles of architecture and numerous monuments, some of which we will visit along the cycle route and include the Unesco World Heritage site the “Alhambra Palace” in Granada and the incredible “Caminito del Rey” near Malaga.

These are eight days of cycling, walking and discovering that we hope will remain as happy memories for many years to come.

My Toro Blanco cycling holiday was a great experience. Chris and Marta were obviously experienced cyclists and their support team were well organised, polite and helpful.

The hotel selection and eateries had been carefully selected and supported the holidays health and fitness intention.

The people in our holiday were of varying cycling abilities and the Toro team catered well for all, including the availability of e bikes to help.

All in all I had a fantastic time with these professional people. Enjoying their their company and the scenery and clement weather that Spain provided.

Spain Bike Tours

In Spain, it’s easy to follow word of mouth to the next great discovery. Bike past a coffee shop, and the locals lingering over café con leche will point you to their favorite tapas restaurant around the corner. Once you’re tasting pintxos or paella, the table next to you will eagerly recommend the wine bar where they’re going next, this church you simply must see, and the guy they know who makes his own jamón —the good stuff.

Locals are proud to share, and that’s what makes cycling the Iberian Peninsula so extraordinary. Your bicycle may take you to an olive oil farm in Costa Brava, the land straddling Spain and France, or to the very edge of the Mediterranean Sea in Mallorca. Our tours of southern Spain focus on Andalucía, the Spanish gateway to Africa. And in La Rioja, we’ll open doors to the charms of Basque Country as well as the wineries that are putting Spain on the map.

Cycling Girona: your ultimate guide

Sierra Sports & Tours logo

Cycling Girona is unlike cycling anywhere else in the world. It’s not just the weather, roads and architecture. It’s the fact you feel you’re wandering into the home of the professional peloton.

Girona was made famous by being Lance Armstrong’s base in the ‘90s, but that’s just the start. There are hundreds of professional cyclists and triathletes, all based in and around Girona.

David Millar has a house here, former Movistar rider Rory Sutherland owns a coffee shop, and so does former pro Christian Mieir (in fact he co-owns three of the coolest establishments in town, including La Fabrica Girona ). Ryder Hesjedal, Sam Bewley, Luke Durbridge, Dan Martin, Michael Hepburn, Lucy Martin, Emilia Fahlin, Georgia Bronzini and Matt Brammeier all base out of Girona.

Tempted by a Girona cycling holiday?

In this cyclist’s guide to Girona, you’ll find everything you need to plan unforgettable Girona cycling holidays: detailed information on the best Girona bike routes plus where to stay, when to visit, cycling shops in Girona and where to rent a bike in Girona.

We’ve also picked the brains of Paul and the team at Sierra Sports & Tours. You’ll find tips and input from them throughout the guide.

Read on and plan your next cycling adventure!

Overview of cycling in/around Girona

Girona is one of the better known road cycling destinations in Europe. But is it one of the best?

It depends what you’re after, but it’s certainly one of our favourite places to ride in Europe.

The main things that make it great:

First, Girona’s cycling routes

We’ve found the roads quiet and in good condition, drivers courteous, and the weather hospitable for much of the year. You may not get snow-capped peaks, but there’s impressive scenery and excellent, varied riding in every direction. There’s tons of info on Girona cycling routes below .

Second, the town.

Girona is vibrant and beautiful.

It offers everything cyclists want: great bike hire/repair/guiding, top draw coffee shops and restaurants and a good range of decent hotels. What’s best is that it’s all found in a mediaeval old town which is a joy to explore: thick stone walls, narrow lanes, winding staircases, restaurants whose tables spill over onto pavements and hidden squares. There’s always something going on: Mardi Gras in February, a film festival in September and the St Narcissus’ fair and festival in October. We were so impressed, we dedicated a whole article to the subject of what to do in Girona when you’re not cycling !

Third, the services for cyclists.

Girona is well geared up for cyclists. There are lots of cycling friendly places to stay in Girona , training facilities and tour companies to help you have the trip you’re looking for.

One thing to consider though is that if you want to stay in the centre of Girona, you’ll find it easier if you’re in a small group as accommodation options tend to be lovely but boutiquey in the centre. There are some good options outside Girona for larger groups. More on that below !

In summary…

When you join everything together, it makes cycling holidays to Girona a special experience for road cyclists. It’s also an excellent option for those looking to sneak some riding into a city break.

We’d highly recommend a visit.

The best Girona cycling routes

Wondering where to cycle in/around Girona?

Girona’s cycling routes are excellent. The amazing Costa Brava cycling routes and coastline are about 30-50km away to the south and east, the Les Gaverres mountains are to the south and the Pyrenean border with France is to the north. Over a third of the region comprises protected areas and reserves.

The tough part is deciding which ride to do.

Cycling routes from central Girona

From Els Angels Girona to cycling climbs such as Mare de Déu del Mont , below is our pick of the best cycling routes from central Girona (including route GPX/TCX downloads).

For more information on routes if you’re staying outside the city, see below .

Cycling Girona Costa Brava coastline

And some final tips:

  • If you want to do some pro spotting, local and former pro David Millar recommends hanging around the Pont de Pedra bridge in the centre of Girona in the morning… Apparently it’s where the pros meet so you never know who you might see. You’ll then just need to pluck up the courage to politely ask if you can tag along too!
  • Before you head out, make sure you check our  tips for cycling in Girona – full of lots of ways to ensure a great trip.

Cycling routes around Girona province

Not everyone wants to stay in central Girona. Some prefer to stay in the glorious countryside surrounding the city. It avoids the busier roads around town and means you can stay in accommodation that’s more spacious and more rural.

If you’re looking for routes for this kind of riding, these articles will help you:

Interview with Girona Cycling SL on training camps from their base near Lake Banyoles (Part 4 contains route ideas)

Interview with Adria Moreno on cycling around Olot, just north of Girona

Our experience of a long weekend cycling around Girona

Paul at Sierra Sports & Tours adds “We highly recommend the beachside town of Roses in the L’Alt Emporda region of the Costa Brava (60km north-east of Girona). This is a fantastic base to ride into medieval towns such as Peralada, to follow winding roads past award-winning vineyards and to access Cabo de Creus which is the most eastern point on the Iberian peninsula. When you ride out to the ‘Cape’ they recommend you get there early before the general tourists arrive. You won’t be disappointed!

Now for the jewel of cycling on the Costa Brava in our eyes; the Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery which is in striking distance from Roses and Cabo de Creus. This is an iconic cycling destination! The arrival at the picturesque Benedictine Monastery with its curving roads and spectacular coastal views all combine to create a most memorable experience. The ‘Sant Pere de Rodes’ climb provides views of the Mediterranean which you will follow all the way down to the beach! Our GPS file for the route is here.

Once you are in L’Alt Emporda region, also be sure to look up Coll de Banyuls which will take you up to the Spanish/French border. The views over France are first-class! The first couple of kilometres on the French side of Coll de Banyuls are very steep so keep that in mind if you have to ride back over to Spain again!”

Easy/family cycling routes, Girona

There are so many good road cycling routes around Girona that if you’re travelling with older children with reasonable fitness, you should be able to find routes that cater to them too.

The Vías Verdes or ‘Greenways’ are an excellent alternative. The routes have been created from disused railway lines and turned into 125 km of family-friendly cycle routes. They are relatively flat, and the fact there are no cars is a real bonus for families. There are four stretches on the Costa Brava:

  • Ripoloi to Olot
  • Olot to Girona
  • Girona to Sant Feliu de Guíxols
  • Palamós to Palafrugell

We haven’t tried them out ourselves but are told that a particularly nice section is the approx 20 km route from Llagostera to the pretty marina and beach of Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

Finally, very young children may enjoy cycling in Girona – around the Park de la Devesa in central Girona. It’s a nice place with more than 2,500 plane trees; good on a hot day. Tuesdays and Saturdays are market days.

Sportives and cycle events

If you want to race, Girona might give you that opportunity. In February social races take place on Wednesdays and Sundays. The courses are 90–100 km through rolling Catalan countryside. They are challenging and competitive races, but are accessible to racers of any level, including women and juniors.

The International Sea Otter Europe bike show is held in September (2-22 September 2024). The related gran fondo is featured in our list of the best European Gran Fondos .

If you miss that, other options include Terra de Remences – run by the Club Ciclista Bas, it is held in May with a 95km loop and a 175km loop, each starting and finishing in Sant Esteve d’en Bas, about 11km south of Olot and 50km northwest of Girona.

And finally there’s the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, that’s held in March and is one of three World Tour stage races held in Spain.

Accommodation

Remember to double-check accommodation bike storage arrangements (and any other services you need) before booking as policies often change.

Central Girona or Girona province?

When you’re planning Girona holidays, you’ve got three main choices on where to base yourself: Girona old town, the countryside of Girona province or certain beachside areas – Roses for example.

If you’re looking for more spacious and quieter accommodation, the countryside is your best option (in which case, see Other places to stay in Girona province below). Otherwise, Girona old town is the best part of Girona to stay in.

The main drawback of being central is that you have to cycle out of Girona each day – but that’s made up for by:

  • Being surrounded by different types of riding: east for coast and west or north for hills and mountains.
  • The joy of being in the old town when you’re not riding. If you’ve read this far, you’ll know how much we love the old town (for more reasons to stay here, read our list of 5 of the best things to do in Girona when you’re not cycling and our guide to Girona’s best coffee shops )!

Which are the best cycling hotels in Girona’s old town?

The city centre lacks a stand-out five-star hotel that’s cycling-focused, but there are a number of three and four star hotels that are very used to hosting cyclists and offer a great stay.

For the full lowdown, read our article on the best cycling hotels in Girona.

Our choice: Hotel Nord 1901

We stayed at Hotel Nord 1901 . It’s right in the heart of the old town, and we would recommend it to friends. It’s not a cycling hotel as such, but it’s owned by a cyclist and seems very tolerant of bikes.

The hotel only has 18 rooms, and while we were there, it certainly seemed dominated by cyclists. We also spotted five bike boxes and two mountain bikes in the bike storage room.

Bedroom at the Hotel Nord Girona

What we loved

  • Superb location for cyclists . In a historic building two minutes walk across the river to the old town, yet on the flat so you can cycle to the front door.
  • Grown-up décor and well thought out bedrooms. The hotel is decorated in dark wood and fashionable greys, while the bedrooms have soothing ochre walls and taupe, crushed velvet bedspreads. You’ll also find iPod docking stations, kettles and coffee-makers.
  • Family run hotel with friendly, professional staff who help give the hotel a warm, inviting atmosphere. We had a problem with the air conditioning in the first room we were offered. They sorted things out quickly and efficiently.
  • Good breakfast. Highlights were the freshly squeezed orange juice, tempting cold meats and artisan yoghurts.
  • Outdoor pool area . A nice place to relax and a pool long enough to glide up and down.

Cold meat selection for breakfast at Hotel Nord

Things to be aware of

  • Bike storage . Bikes are stored in a room next to reception which is multi-use and could be more spacious.
  • Our room was on the fourth floor . The lift only goes as far as the third floor. Get a room lower down if you want to save your legs!
  • No restaurant . But given the incredible restaurants surrounding the hotel, it wasn’t an issue for us.

Sierra Sports & Tours also tell us that the Hotel Cuitat de Girona , just opposite Hotel Nord 1901, is where their guests often stay. Paul says “our guests really enjoyed it and it has a big dedicated bike storage room with secure access.”

Official Girona cycling hotels

The Catalan Tourist Board has certified Girona as a Sports Holiday Destination. This recognises it as a location offering high-quality resources, sports facilities, lodging and specialised services.

At a practical level, it means that they have designated some hotels as Girona bike hotels. They are advertised as having the following facilities:

  • Closed and secure parking area for bicycles
  • Workshop with basic repair tools
  • Hose for cleaning bicycles
  • Sale of energy products
  • Spare parts
  • Information on cycling routes
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Map with details of sporting facilities
  • Early morning breakfasts
  • Picnic lunches available

The Tourist Board’s official list of Girona cycling hotels is below. Of these, we would pick the Gran Ultònia , which is a modern business hotel about 5 minutes walk to the old town with underground parking and a wonderful rooftop bar. It has a secure bike room with bike washing area, bike parking and tools. Hotel AC Paulau de Bellavista would be our second choice.

  • Gran Ultònia
  • Hotel AC Paulau de Bellavista
  • Hotel Carlemany
  • Melia Girona
  • Doubletree by Hilton
  • Ibis Girona Nord

Five star hotels in Girona

For those with deep pockets, the exclusive new Sants Metges Hotel housed in the old castle of La Fortalesa is worth checking out, though it’s a 15 minute ride back into town.

The Casa Cacao hotel in central Girona opened in 2020. It’s not cycling focused, but it’s owned by the famous Roca brothers and worth a look if you’re after a luxurious experience.

Want our full pick of Girona’s best cycling hotels? Read this .

Other places to stay in Girona province

Where you start your search will probably be based on the riding you want to do.

  • Coastal riding? You’ll be looking sout or east of Girona in towns like Palamós, Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Callela de Palafrugell or Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Roses to the north-east also has coastal riding and some good hills to contend with!
  • Hills and mountains? Try the Garrotxa area like Olot or Ripoli.
  • If you want to hedge your bets, you’ll be aiming for somewhere near Girona or Lake Banyoles so you can access both coast and hills.

You can read about what it’s like to stay with Girona Cycling SL near Lake Banyoles, here.

Our pick of the best cycling hotels in Girona includes several hotels outside Girona. Read the full article here.

Road bike hire Girona/Costa Brava

Prices, services and bike brands often change. Please let us know if anything is incorrect.

As one of the best road cycling destinations in Spain, Girona’s bike rental options are also top notch.

The three main bike shops in Girona all offer slightly different bike rental and services. If you’re not sure which to go for, the comparison table below sets out what’s on offer. We hope it helps.

Please note:

If you opt for a trip with our Girona guide sponsor, Sierra Sports & Tours , they have a number of bike models available for hire. Below is a list of Sierra’s hire bikes from the most economic to expensive options:

  • Hybrid: Specialized Sirrus (Sizes: S to L): Price: 30€/day
  • Road: Orbea Avant M30 (105, Sizes: 49 to 57): Price: 40€/day
  • E-Hybrid: Specialized Vado (Sizes: S, M & L): Price: 60€/day
  • E-Road: Specialized Creo (Sizes S, M & L): Price: 75€/day

Other points worth noting:

  • When we visited Girona, we hired a BMC Teammachine SLR TWO from CycleTours Catalonia – details below. It was in good repair and was an enjoyable ride. We have not used the other places listed.
  • This information is offered as an indicative guide only: we periodically update it but prices, services and bike brands may change. Please let us know if you find anything that is incorrect.
  • The Girona bike rental shops below offer guiding/tours – for more information, read our article on Girona/Costa Brava bike tours .

Bike rental Girona, Spain: the options

Tips for Girona cycle hire:

  • Book your bike in advance, particularly in peak season.
  • Remember to bring your pedals, shoes and helmet. This   packing list may help!
  • Check which way around your brakes are set before you ride away. Front brakes may be on the right hand (as is usual in the UK) or on the left (as is usual elsewhere in Europe).

Supported cycling holidays

Sierra Sports & Tours offer a range of different holiday options in and around Girona. We love their flexibility! Below Paul from Sierra sets out the main options – you can find full details below.

Our Girona bike tour article also has more information on the tour options available in Girona.

“Fully-guided cycling tours

These are group travel experiences where individual travellers sign up to a web-listed package with a set itinerary and set dates (5-13 May and 21-29 September during 2024; these dates are guaranteed departures).

Self-guided cycling tours

Every year from 1 February to 30 November, Sierra has a variety of 6-night, 9-night and 12-night Girona and Costa Brava Self-Guided tour itineraries. You can choose from 2, 3 or 4 star hotels. The Sierra office prepares the tour itinerary, books the accommodation and also provides luggage transfer and emergency back-up.

Partially-guided cycling tours

This is a private group experience where you follow a set itinerary prepared by Sierra for a specific duration and your preferred dates. There is no lead cycling guide but you have a support driver/mechanic and van.

Private tours

Private tours can be self-guided, fully-guided or partially-guided. At Sierra, a private tour can be cheaper than their non-private equivalent!

Read below for full information!”

Girona’s weather means it is a good bet for cycling at any time of the year. Average temperature highs are always in double digits, and lows don’t dip below 2℃, even in the coldest months of December to February.

Of course, most people visit between Spring and Autumn: April to June and September and October probably represent peak cycling season.

Summers tend to be hot – you’re looking at average highs of 29℃ – but cyclists still visit, they just get out early to avoid the intense midday heat.

We’d say the absolute best months are probably June and September, as you get average temperature highs in the late 20s and average rainfall is relatively low too.

While rainfall is relatively low throughout the year, this is not the arid south of Spain, and it does rain throughout the year. The landscape is full of dense green forest, and there’s a reason for that. Statistically speaking May, October and November are the rainiest months with rainfall at about 80mm and rainy days between 11 and 12 per month.

Here’s our at-a-glance guide for cyclists in Girona, Spain:

Tips for cycling in Girona

Cycling cafes around girona.

Girona and its cycling culture has been explored in detail in other Epic Road Rides posts . But as Paul from Sierra Sports & Tours says “as you all know by now, the Costa Brava is far more than just cycling and enjoying coffee in the Girona capital.

Sierra in particular loves cycling along the section of Med coastline which is approximately 40km south of Girona. The 50km stretch of road between Tossa de Mar and Callela de Palafrugell, is a must-ride (see Epic Road Rides’ “ Costa Brava coastline ” route). The bike shop called ‘Tossa Cycling’ importantly includes a café/bar which is the perfect place to begin or finish your ‘coastal’ ride. Halfway along the 50km stretch, you come across the town ‘Platja d’Aro’ (translated Gold Beach in English). This town best serves the general tourism masses, but thankfully the cycling friendly coffee shop ‘La Maglia Coffee & Co’ means there is always a good reason to pull-in for a breather.

In the northern Costa Bravarea (L´Alt Emporda) there’s the town of ‘Sant Pere Pescador’. It doesn’t have a major tourism focus but is on the path for one of the Sierra designed 100km rides from beach towns Callela to Roses. Here stopping at Sant Pere Pescador for a coffee break at ‘Bar Ruki’ is much recommended as it can be the difference between enjoying or bonking during the final 25km through to the beautiful beaches along the ‘Gulf of Roses’.

Closer to Girona are two of the most gruelling climbs in the region; Rocacorba and Santuari de la Mare de Deu del Mont. After reaching the top of Rocacorba the cruise down to Lake Banyules often sees the Sierra crew stop-in at the lakeside cafeteria called ‘Banys Vells Banyoles’. A nice setting and the perfect place to retell a story or two.

The 18km climb to ‘Mare de Deu del Mont’ can also make a serious dent in energy levels so ‘Restaurante Bar Hostatgeria’ at the summit provides an excellent pit-stop. Just remember though it is typically closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.”

Girona maps

For a map of Girona town, this interactive map is quite useful and has a search function.

We love physical maps and so couldn’t resist buying a Mapa topographic de Catalunya, number 3 of Pirinieu Oriental, Girona and Costa Brava at 1:100,000.

If you want a map of Girona before you go, this might help though it’s at 1:150,000.

Paul from Sierra Sports & Tours says “I use the 1:130,000 Michelin map called ‘Costa Brava’ Map 122.”

In terms of guide books, we had a copy of the Marco Polo Costa Brava guide . It didn’t have a huge amount in it about Girona, but it was a reasonable starting point.

Girona is mentioned by both Millar and Wiggins in their memoirs:

  • Racing through the dark by David Millar
  •   In Pursuit of Glory by Bradley Wiggins

Girona hosts a film festival in September each year. In 2024 it will be begin on 4 November and end on 8 November.

Girona’s picturesque streets were used for the filming of series 6 of the hugely popular Game of Thrones .

Good to know

If you have a bike servicing issue, you’ll probably head to the workshop of one of the “big 3” mentioned in the bike hire section above.

Paul from Sierra Sports & Tours says “If you head further north into L’Alt Emporda region and need some bike servicing help, also be sure to look up Edibikes. They are located 5km and 15km respectively from the Figueres and Roses townships, right on the main road with easy parking in the service lane. They have a big showroom, plenty of stock for spare parts, a good workshop and remains open late (typically 8:00pm). In fact, during the busy summer months it often stays open all day (no Spanish siesta) – but be sure to check this before planning a visit!”

Girona is a great option for triathletes. The GEIG complex in Girona has two 25m pools and a 50m pool. The swimming lake in Banyoles offers fantastic open water swimming.

Nearly everything in Girona shuts on Sunday. If there’s something you need to do on a Sunday, be sure to check the opening times.

Girona (officially, the province of Girona), is located within Catalunya (aka Catalonia), an autonomous community within Spain. Catalans are very proud of their unique language and culture. Catalonia is one of the most affluent regions of Spain and contains excellent public services and infrastructure.

On our flight to Barcelona at the end of September, ours was amongst at least five other bike boxes on the oversize baggage belt (belt 12). Making your box distinctive in some way is a good idea to avoid picking up someone else’s bike by accident.

How to get to Girona from Barcelona

While there are many direct flights to Girona airport, Barcelona is the major hub. From Barcelona to Girona it’s around 110km (and takes about 1.5 hours).

When deciding how to get to your hotel, a big factor will be whether you will be arriving with or without a bike box. Bus and train options, whilst possible, are often more difficult and stressful when travelling with a bike box. Car hire is one option that gives you flexibility in your transfer and during your stay.

Below, Paul from Sierra Sports & Tours shares his insights and experience on the best transfer options.

“Buses

Many cyclists visiting the Costa Brava often spend a few initial days in beautiful Barcelona. If you are travelling without a bike box then from the Catalan capital we can recommend public transport services. Buses leave from ‘Estacio del Nord’ and the Sagales bus company has one-way tickets from approximately 20€.

A bike box is treated as over-sized luggage and you need to buy an additional standard ticket. Whether your bike box can be stored away will also be subject to availability in the underneath luggage compartment so this bus option comes with its own challenges for travellers with bike boxes.

If you prefer train travel, then from Barcelona-El Prat Airport you will first need to find the RENFE station at terminal T2 (there is a free airport bus between T1 and T2). From T2 you can catch the metro line to the central Barcelona-Sants train station (about 5€ for the 20-minute one-way trip). A taxi from Barcelona-El Prat Airport to Barcelona-Sants train station is more likely to be around 40-50 Euro.

Now that you have arrived at Barcelona-Sants train station you can board the high-speed AVE train to Girona city centre. One-way tickets start from around 20€ and the trip usually takes about 40 minutes. Be careful with the high-speed AVE train though as there are strict luggage requirements. RENFE allows one large suitcase only so if you also arrive with your bike box you will encounter a problem.

If you have luggage and a bike box then a good alternative is to make your way to nearby ‘Passeig de Gracia’ train station in the Barcelona city centre. Take a regional train from here which has no luggage restrictions, leaves every hour, costs less than 10€ and typically takes between 75-90 minutes to central Girona.

Once you have made it to Girona bus/train station most of the hotels in the old-town are only a 20-minute walk away.

Or: It might seem surprising, but a transfer from Madrid (Spain’s capital) to Girona is also possible. The Sierra crew have put many of their guests on this high-speed AVE train route. The 700km distance takes 3.5hr and one-way prices can range from 50-150€. It is always a good idea to book well in advance on the RENFE website to take advantage of the best price offers. The only point to remember is the one large luggage requirement with the high-speed AVE trains throughout Spain!

If you are coming into Girona train station or Girona airport with your bike then a taxi will be quick, cheap and easy. However, you and your bike box via taxi from Barcelona Airport to central Girona will most likely come with a 200 Euro price tag.

Sierra Sports & Tours transfer

If you have selected a fully-guided or partially-guided Sierra tour then the Barcelona-Girona and vice versa transfer price (for you and your bike bag) is already included. The self-guided tour options, on the other hand, have the possibility of selecting a transfer for a small extra. Sierra is used to collecting clients from the Girona bus/train station (1.5km), Girona airport (15km), Barcelona-El Prat airport (115km) or Barcelona-Sants train station (105km).”

If you land at Barcelona airport and are looking for the car hire desks, these are located in Terminal B.

Terminal C of Barcelona airport confusingly also seems to be referred to as Terminal 2.

To get to the car hire desks from Terminal C, follow the signs to Terminal B, past the multi-storey car park on your right. It’s less than 5 minutes by foot.”

More on Sierra Sports & Tours

Paul tells us more about the cycling holidays they offer.

“We are delighted to be able to offer the following kinds of cycling trip to our guests:

  • Fully-guided – guide on the road with you + support van
  • Self-guided – GPS files + luggage transfer + emergency help
  • Partially-guided – GPS files + support van
  • Private – any of the above but just for your group.

These different options provide fantastic flexibility – and are made possible because Sierra are based in Spain.

Fully-guided cycling tours

These are group travel experiences where individual travellers sign up to a web-listed package with a set itinerary and set dates (for Girona, 5-13 May and 21-29 September 2024; these dates are guaranteed departures).

Clients sign up via the online booking form and Sierra organises the rest.

The group is led by the Sierra team from the start to finish of the tour. There is a lead cycling guide out on the road with the group at all times and a following support van with experienced driver/mechanic. The support van carries a full-set of bike tools and parts, spare wheels, complimentary food and drink and also each guest’s day pack with additional clothing, valuables, etc. The vans also come with roof racks for transporting up to ten bikes so if you are having an off-day the van ‘is your friend’ as Sierra tour leader Jorge likes to say.

Remember that this tour type can easily ‘Go Private’ with a minimum of 4 participants.

More information

Map showing guided cycling tour in Girona Spain

This tour type best suits guests who are experienced travellers who typically enjoy travelling in small groups with friends, family or as a couple (minimum 2 clients).

The Sierra office prepares the tour itinerary, books the accommodation and usually also organises the hire bikes (which can be hybrid, road bike or both forms of e-bike).

Every year from 1 February to 30 November, Sierra has a variety of 6-night, 9-night and 12-night Girona and Costa Brava Self-Guided tour itineraries. You can choose from 2, 3 or 4 star hotels.

The Sierra self-guided formula for success includes a local guide that meets you at the initial hotel in central Girona. At this time there is the bike fitting and handover of small toolkit, floor pump, chains/padlocks and e-bike charges (if necessary). There’s also a detailed briefing going through the client booklet and what you all have in store.

There is no guide with the group during the daily rides, but because Sierra is local, there is a 24hr emergency support phone number in the event clients strike any issues. There is sure to be contact during the tour as every couple of days the tour moves hotels and as such the Sierra guide collects the luggage and moves it on to the next hotel.

Whatever the case though, the Sierra guide will meet you at the end of the tour to collect your hire bike and receive any feedback about your experience. Compared to fully-guided tours the self-guided option is great value at approximately 0.6 the price of a guided tour. Pre and post transfers to Barcelona are also available.

Map showing self-guided cycling trip near Girona, Spain

This is a private group experience where you follow a set itinerary prepared by Sierra for a specific duration and your preferred dates (details below). What is different though is that there is no lead cycling guide on tour.

The Sierra guide in this case is the support driver/mechanic. A van will follow you providing the daily ride assistance you are looking for.

Partially-guided is perfect for those setting off on long challenging daily rides and who want the reassurance of extra kit, food, drink and support if something goes wrong. At the same time, clients who select this tour style are accustomed to riding in their own group, are comfortable using a Garmin and following the GPX ride files designed by Sierra.

The advantage of having a van and driver on-hand also means that afternoon visits to local attractions and/or restaurants can be organised, so you get the most out of your holiday experience!

Compared to fully-guided tours the self-guided option usually has a relative price of approximately 0.8. The reduced tour price is due to the need for only one Sierra guide on tour.

Private cycling tours

Private tours can be ‘self-guided’, ‘fully-guided’ or ‘partially-guided’. When it comes to self-guided the 6-, 9- and 12-night set Sierra itineraries can be customised and your own dates requested. As mentioned earlier, a guided private tour involves rounding up a group of friends and stating the number of tour days and the specific tour dates you require. You will then be assigned a Sierra team with a lead cycling guide and support driver/mechanic.

We often find people expect private tours to be more expensive. This is perhaps true for small private groups with only two people.

However, in the Sierra experience, for groups of four or more this is not usually the case. A fully-guided private tour price is typically a minimum 5-10% cheaper than the guided tour option presented on their website (based on a like-for-like tour service comparison).

We’d love to help you plan your next cycling holiday in Girona, so do get in touch with me, Paul, on [email protected] . You can also find more information on our Girona trips on our website. ”

For more than a decade, SIERRA SPORTS & TOURS has been specialising in European cycling tours for beginners through to advanced cyclists. Sierra was born from a passion for travelling. Its founder and staff love to travel the world, discover new places, quiet roads and meet and mix with the locals. From mountain biking the remote Norwegian fjords to bike-packing non-stop from Alaska to Argentina (yes you read that right) the Sierra tour leaders are explorers well before entrepreneurs. Understanding the needs of their guests means the tours they offer allow you to relax and enjoy the ride!

When Sierra prepares a route, they travel it beforehand and take the necessary time to discover it which riding a bike allows. They love the first stage of a tour, which is design, as if it was a tour for them only. ‘DETOURING’ is a term they like to use: they take detours to discover new roads and lightly-trafficked routes where the cyclist feels comfortable. By getting off the conventional routes and not only looking for the names of the most important cities, Sierra is able to find the most picturesque and rewarding places for cyclo-tourists. They also use the time to discover intimate hotels, cafeterias and restaurants where one can recover their energy for the onward journey.

When it comes to Girona and surrounds, the Sierra focus was initially centred on conducting Costa Brava fully-guided cycling tours. Things have expanded though over recent years and with the increase in Girona demand the Sierra services now also include partially-guided and self-guided options from anywhere between 6– to 12-night packages.

If you want to visit tourist sites on foot, Rome may be your best bet, as there are tons of historical sites like the Roman Forum that are within city limits. — AFP

When it published its latest guide, Lonely Planet highlighted the trend to visit tourist sites on foot or by bike, as optimal means for slowly voyaging through unknown regions and really taking the time to discover them. Of course, some destinations are more suitable for this kind of travel than others.

Locals know that if you’re cycling in Paris, France you can usually outpace the cars. But using your legs is also a good way to get around. While this type of vacation is feasible in the City of Light, it’s less the case in other major tourist destinations around the globe such as London, England unless you concentrate solely on the must-sees around Big Ben and Westminster (but that would be a shame!).

The slower pace of travel on foot is in fact an approach gaining ground, and not only among backpackers, as spotted by the Lonely Planet guide at the end of 2023. So-called “soft” travel, or travelling “on foot or by bike”, is truly in vogue. For instance, the Portuguese Way, which links Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela, was an unprecedented success last year, according to Lonely Planet.

For a city break all on foot, Spain offers the most opportunities, according to searches and bookings made on the Guruwalk platform, which organises free pedestrian tours worldwide, spotted by The DailyMail.

In this Top 100 list of the best destinations to explore without ever relying on the metro or bus, Spain appears 28 times!

Barcelona in Spain is also a great city for walking tours. — Pixabay

It’s worth remembering that the methodology of ranking is based above all on popular walking tours.

Other popular Spanish cities for these types of visits include Seville (15th), Toledo (16th), Valencia (21st) and Granada (27th).

France is another option for visiting the sites by foot. There are seven possibilities, including Paris (11th), Bordeaux (47th), Strasbourg (51st), Toulouse (67th), Nice (81st), Marseille (82nd) and Lyon (95th).

However, it is Rome that really stands out as the most popular destination for a visit without any means of transport.

Meanwhile, the only United States city on the list is New York in the 53rd spot. – AFP Relaxnews
