All of Taylor Swift's 'I Can See You' Music Video Easter Eggs

Among other hidden messages, the singer's new music video from Speak Now (Taylor's Version) seems to hint that her next rerecording is 1989 (Taylor's Version)

Taylor Swift - I Can See You

Taylor Swift ’s new music video for “I Can See You” is filled with Easter eggs that could hint at her next rerecording.

On July 7, the singer released her anticipated album, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) — a rerecorded version of her 2010 release — including six new never-before-heard vault tracks.

During her Eras Tour, Swift kept the surprises coming as she announced that she was debuting a brand-new music video for one of those vault tracks, “I Can See You,” with the help of three people from her Speak Now era.

The singer was joined on the stage by Joey King and Presley Cash, who previously starred in her “Mean” music video, and Taylor Lautner, who inspired Speak Now 's "Back to December ."

Swift said of her ex before introducing him onstage, “He was a very positive force in my life when I was making the Speak Now album, and I want to say he did every single stunt that you saw in that music video. He and his wife have become some of my closest friends, and it’s very convenient because we all share the same first name.”

Filmed in Liverpool in April, the music video features King, Cash and Lautner as they pull off a heist to break out “Speak Now Taylor” from the vault.

“I wrote this video treatment over a year ago and really wanted to play out symbolically how it’s felt for me to have the fans helping me reclaim my music,” Swift said about the music video on Instagram.

Not only does the music video feature countless nods to her Speak Now era, but it also includes some Easter eggs that seem to point at her 1989 era, which have fans speculating about what could be coming next.

Here’s a complete rundown of all the Easter eggs in the music video.

“Last Kiss” lyric reference

The beginning of the music video is dated July 9 at 1:58, which are lyrics found in the song “Last Kiss” on her Speak Now album.

“Electric Touch” lyric reference

As King types a passcode, she receives a shock via a flash of purple light. Fans think this could be a reference to another Speak Now vault song, “Electric Touch,” which features Fall Out Boy .

“Long Live” lyric on her arm

When we first see Swift, she’s wearing her iconic gold fringe dress from her Speak Now tour. In another nod to the era, she also has lyrics from "Long Live" (a song she wrote for her fans) written on her arm: “I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you."

Undercover mission

King dodging purple lasers to enter the vault has fans drawing parallels to the opening of the 2014 iHeartRadio Music Festival , where Swift had to do something similar to make her way to stage. Seeing as this was during Swift’s 1989 era, Swifties think this could be an Easter egg that her fifth album is her next rerecording.

13 on her hand

In addition to donning her Speak Now Tour outfit, Swift also has her lucky number 13 painted on her hand, a hallmark of her tour days at that time.

Her past frozen behind glass

As the museum lights up, King and Lautner notice that the entire building is filled with costumes from Swift’s Speak Now era. The glass cases seem to be a reference to Swift’s Evermore song “It’s Time to Go” in which she sings about her original recordings being sold to Scooter Braun's company : “He's got my past frozen behind glass / But I've got me.”

Counting down the days until Speak Now ’s release

In the room Swift is in, we see tallies written all over the wall, seemingly making reference to how Swift was counting down the days until she could reclaim her work by releasing Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) .

Joey King’s “Mean” music video outfit

In addition to featuring Swift’s Speak Now outfits, one of the glass cases also includes the outfit King wore in the “Mean” music video. Beside it, we see a throwback photo of Swift and King when they were younger, which makes the Kissing Booth actress emotional.

Later in the video, it becomes clear that “Speak Now Taylor” is actually locked inside a vault. Not only is this a reference to Swift’s “vault tracks” but fans have also noted that Swift used similar imagery in her “Look What You Made Me Do” music video from her Reputation album.

Five security guards

As King and Lautner roam around the museum, they’re met by five different security guards, which fans think could be a reference to Swift’s fifth album, 1989 . The fight scene also draws a lot of parallels to Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video, which was also from that album.

Joey King using Taylor Swift’s “Mean” banjo

Fans have taken note that King’s weapon of choice during the fight scene was fittingly the banjo Swift used to play during her “Mean” performance during her Speak Now Tour.

Taylor Lautner in front of Taylor Swift’s “Back to December” piano

Lautner’s fight sequence is almost exactly the same as the fight sequence during his Saturday Night Live monologue in which he talked about how he should have defended Swift when Kanye West infamously stormed the stage at the MTV VMAs.

Fittingly, his big fight sequence occurs in front of the blue dress Swift wore and the piano she played during “Back to December,” a song penned about Lautner, during the Speak Now Tour.

Purple lights

Throughout the music video, there are various purple lights, seemingly a reference to Swift’s Speak Now album, which has been associated with the color over the years. In particular, when Lautner breaks Swift out of the vault, he uses three purple explosives, a reference to Speak Now being Swift’s third album.

Recreating the Midnights album cover

As King lights a torch before breaking Swift out of the vault, she appears to recreate Swift’s Midnights album cover as she holds the flame close to her face.

Blue lights

While most of the music video features purple lighting, a color associated with Speak Now , fans have pointed out that the lights immediately change as soon as Swift is broken out of the vault, switching to a greenish-blue hue reminiscent of her 1989 album. Could this indicate that Swift is about to break 1989 (Taylor’s Version) out of the vault next?

Taylor Swift leaving her past behind

After Swift successfully takes back Speak Now , she looks back at the museum collapsing behind her, which fans have interpreted as Swift being emotional about leaving behind her original Speak Now album in an effort to reclaim her work. Swift seemingly confirmed this theory as she liked a fan tweet about the scene , which reads: “her face watching everything blow up makes me so sad it’s like she knows she’s reclaiming her work to be her own but she’s also giving away the original 💔 i’m so glad she stole speak now tho ITS WHAT WE DESERVED.”

Van heading towards 1989 TV

The music video ends with Swift, Lautner, King and Cash hopping into a van and driving away. As they head down the street, right above them is a sign that reads “1989 TV,” insinuating that Swift is set to release her version of 1989 next. Swift previously teased the order of her remaining three rerecordings during her “Karma” music video as she included Easter eggs for 1989 , Reputation and her debut album in a clockwise order.

Taylor Swift hints at 'Speak Now (Taylor's Version)' with tour announcement

There's always more than meets the eye when it comes to content from Miss Swift! Eagle-eyed fans know that the singer-songwriter chooses her words very carefully, and that goes for her tour announcement too.

After months of speculation, the ' Midnight Rain ' singer finally confirmed that she is making her long-awaited return to the road! On November 1, she announced the first leg of The Eras Tour and revealed her plans to take the eclectic celebration of all her albums to stadiums across the globe.

She wrote: "I’m enchanted to announce my next tour: Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour, a journey through the musical eras of my career (past & present!)."

It didn't take long for fans to flag the particular use of the word ' enchanted ', which is track nine and a fan-favourite from 2010's 'Speak Now'.

Taylor mouths along to those ever-so-catchy lyrics from 'Anti Hero's chorus as the camera cuts away periodically to another Taylor wearing one of her most recognisable 'Speak Now' tour outfits.

She's even painted the famous '13' on the back of her hand!

Taylor dresses as all the previous versions of herself in new commercial

This one has taken TikTok by storm! Taylor dusted off her acting chops once again to appear in a commercial for the sponsor of her upcoming tour, Capital One.

Reminiscent of the 'Look What You Made Me Do' music video, the superstar dresses up as all the previous versions of herself, donning styles that are evocative of each album.

Taylor channelled all her previous eras

Swifties couldn't help but notice that the TS3 era Taylor appears first and has a central role throughout the advert.

One fan account in particular, @thethrifyswiftie, noticed the order in which the Taylor's appeared, hinting toward the possible chronology of the 'Taylor's Version' releases. If this theory rings true then we could be getting 'Speak Now', followed by '1989', 'Reputation', and then her self-titled debut.

A lady in the elevator scene of the commercial can also be seen sporting a 'Speak Now VIP Tour' lanyard – interesting.

Taylor Nation sneaks TS3 lyrics into their Instagram captions

Taylor Nation, the pop star's official management team, shared their own post to Instagram upon the announcement of The Eras Tour.

They shared that nostalgia-provoking tour artwork and wrote: "When all of your favorite eras, songs, stories, and late nights mesh into one."

However, Taylor Nation couldn't help but get a lyric from the singer's third album in the caption, they finished off the post by writing: "We have a feeling these memories are going to break our fall."

Where have we heard this familiar line before? Oh yes, Taylor sings a very similar line in 'Long Live', the final track on the highly-spoken-about record.

The lyrics in question occur in the bridge: "May these memories break our fall."

The 'Bejeweled' music video is 'Speak Now' central

We've already written a whole article on the abundant Easter eggs in the 'Bejeweled' music video, Taylor even revealed that she had to make a PDF to keep track of the clues! You can read it here or continue for the SparkNotes edition...

Most notably, Taylor enters an elevator with buttons that seems to correspond to each one of her records. 'Speak Now's colour is considered to be purple, and Taylor presses the purple '3' button once she gets in the lift. Number 13 is in the same hue, indicating that it will be her 13th release.

Laura Dern, who plays the singer's evil stepmother in the music video, also shouts "Speak not!" in the intro of the cinderella-esque story – surely it's not a coincidence!

And if that wasn't enough evidence, Taylor also wears pins in her hair that read 'SN' – the TS3 re-recording is on its way!

Taylor Swift’s Arm Lyrics From the 2011 Speak Now Tour – Full List

Only Taylor Swift knows what truly inspires the lyrics that she writes on her arm each night on the 2011 Speak Now Tour, but given the singer's mischievous habit of slipping encoded details of her personal life into her music, it's not a stretch to suggest Swift's left arm is speaking to someone or something every time she takes the stage.Beginning with her May 21 open rehearsal show in Nashville, Swift has been writing lyrics on her arm at each tour date, and we've been keeping track of her Sharpie stylings. What's followed has been quite the narrative of heartbreak and lovestruck hope. Is she trying to work through a painful relationship on the Speak Now Tour, or just picking powerful lyrics from some of her favorite artists and songwriters? You decide, and check back here for updates as the tour goes on.

"You've got every right to a beautiful life"

Taylor Swift chose a lyric from her good friend and fellow singer Selena Gomez to kick off the 2011 Speak Now Tour. 'Who Says' is a confidence booster to pop fans, and perhaps to Swift, as she was no doubting fighting butterflies as she prepared to embark on another massive headlining tour.

"You gotta keep your head up, but you can't let your hair down"

While this show was one week after the opener in Nashville, Taylor Swift chose another lyric meant to swallow self-pity, boost self-esteem and keep it together. Swift has proven throughout this tour that she favors lyrics that address and rise above personal vulnerabilities.

"I recommend getting your heart trampled on to anyone"

Yikes! What the heck happened while Taylor Swift was in Omaha? She would later cover this song (as well as Justin Bieber 's 'Baby') during a tour stop in Toronto. It's certainly not a stretch to compare Swift and Morissette, as both write songs from the edge of their emotions. Perhaps Swift was only paying tribute to a hero.

"Cinderella said to Snow White, 'How does love get so off course?'"

Like her tribute to Alanis Morissette the night before, Taylor Swift could have just been paying homage to a woman she admires in choosing to write a Faith Hill lyric on her arm. However, it's difficult to ignore back-to-back breakup lyrics. Is someone else becoming the subject of a future song?

"And for one desperate moment, he crept back in her memory"

In the interest of fair journalism, we should consider alternatives to the story Taylor Swift seems to be telling on her left arm. Perhaps a friend was heartbroken. Maybe the crowds on this tour weren't receptive? Not likely. Could she just be toying with us? Either way, 'American Girl' is also featured on her pre-show playlist, so she's clearly a fan of the song.

"It took a while to understand the beauty of just letting go"

Once again, Taylor Swift drew inspiration from an artist that does jaded as well as anyone. To date, Swift has not covered this song at any of her stops on the Speak Now Tour, though she did sing the Dixie Chicks' 'Cowboy Take Me Away' at one of her four shows in Newark, N.J. at a later stop on the tour.

"I guess we're all one phone call from our knees"

Swift proved the diversity of her iPod throughout this tour. Kearney is a Nashville based singer-songwriter, but most of his success has been on the Adult Top 40 chart. His inclusion indicates that the country singer will not limit her search for inspiration to get her through difficult times.

"One life, you got to do what you should"

As Taylor Swift began her third week of the Speak Now Tour, the lyrics on her left arm began feeling more hopeful. If it was indeed heartbreak that struck some time around Omaha, then she reached the acceptance stage of the healing process and found songs to ride forward upon by Columbus.

"I slept in castles and fell in love because I was taught to dream"

Taylor Swift's Speak Now Tour has dropped the castle scenery from previous sets, but it still plays into a fantasy that the singer acts out during the course of the evening. If this line from 'Fireflies' doesn't send a personal message, it at least fits well into that imagery.

"You better lose yourself in the music"

Taylor Swift has been known to sprinkle Eminem songs into her set, so there's no doubting her familiarity with this Detroit-born rapper. It's fairly easy to find video of Swift performing this song from as far back as 2007.

"Remember me in ribbons and curls, love your baby girl"

Taylor Swift could be speaking to the city of Nashville with this lyric, as she is somewhat of the Music City's princess. If this is the case, it would indicate forever gratitude to the place that first made her a star. This was Swift's CMA Music Festival performance, but Sugarland was not on the lineup.

"Love has 1,000 faces"

This lyric was no doubt a tip of the cap to the night's opening act. Taylor Swift must really be a fan of the song, though, as she hasn't repeated the tribute for subsequent openers, aside from tour mainstays Needtobreathe in Knoxville.

"A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh, a kiss, a cry, our rights, our wrongs"

In 2009, this song from Australian rockers the Temper Trap appeared in the film '(500) Days of Summer' starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It packs plenty of melodrama into the otherwise simple lyric, and like many great Taylor Swift songs, says plenty without speaking too much.

"Where I was born, where I was raised, where I keep all my yesterdays"

It's unlikely Wyomissing, Pa. has a venue big enough to support 20,000 Taylor Swift fans, so the singer compromises by calling Pittsburgh her homecoming. Technically, she grew up much closer to Philadelphia, so perhaps she'll reprise the lyric next time she hits the city.

"I am just a dreamer, but you are just a dream"

Neil Young was a member of Buffalo Springfield , but it's doubtful that's why Taylor Swift chose this lyric at this tour stop. She could be speaking to the same person who seemed to break her heart at the beginning of the tour. Many of the next few lyrical tributes seem to indicate she's moved out of the eye of her emotional storm.

"'Cause when I close my eyes, I'm somewhere with you"

Taylor Swift grabs lyrics from just about every genre, but is always careful to include music from the style that made her famous. When she does, it's a nice peek at the list of artists and songs on country radio that she finds inspiring.

"She said, I think I'll go to Boston"

Foxboro is just outside of Boston, making this left-arm lyric somewhat obvious. On the other hand, Augustana aren't even from Boston -- they're a rock band from San Diego.

"Like love from a drunken sky, she's confetti falling down at night"

The previous night's show in Foxboro proved Taylor Swift's mettle. She pressed on despite a driving rain. Taste of Country believes this lyric may have been in appreciation of that storm.

"And we are just breakable, breakable, breakable girls and boys"

This album cut from Ingrid Michaelson's 2006 'Girls and Boys' album again shows that Taylor Swift is digging deep to find great music. Although many of this folk singer's songs have been featured on television shows, she's not exactly a radio mainstay. The lyric doesn't make any connection to the venue, leaving one to guess it's another one of her personal messages to someone.

"You won't be the songs that I could never write"

The Christian rock band from South Carolina have opened every date of Taylor Swift's Speak Now Tour, and in Knoxville she said thank you by inking their lyric on her arm. Could she also be giving fair warning to someone?

"When you're alone, you ain't nothing but alone"

This deep cut from Bruce Springsteen 's 'Tunnel of Love' album shows the singer was paying attention when Mr. and Mrs. Swift were spinning records (or flipping cassettes) at home in Pennsylvania. It could also describe a homesick or still heartbroken 21-year-old, just back from a bout with bronchitis.

"Money can't buy you back the love that you had then"

This song from Canadian rocker Feist became a hit after airing on a commercial for the iPod in 2007. Swift ties geography into her arm lyrics on occasion, and there's no doubt she's aware, if not a big fan of, this singer.

“Doing all the things that I neglected, I traded them all in to be in your arms”

At this point it's been almost 50 days since Taylor Swift's first forlorn lyric tattoo, and nothing of this suggested breakup has made the news, blogs or Twitter fodder. Could it be that the singer is simply drawing lyrics from songs she likes but has no connection to? If so, then why choose mostly melancholy records?

"Belief builds from scratch, doesn't have to relax, doesn't need space"

There were plenty of New Yorkers at each of Taylor Swift's four New Jersey shows, and they no doubt appreciated her showing some love to an artist from their state. Swift consistently shows appreciation for well-written songs, no matter what her motivation is.

"You're someone else's baby, you're someone else's crazy now"

A remorseful and bitter song, if there ever was one. Taylor Swift again proves she's a virtual Wikipedia of song lyrics. Many may know this country folk-rocker, but how many can pull up his lyrics when the emotion calls for it?

"I was only there to sing your song, what were you protecting yourself from"

Another message, or just a tribute to one of her favorite rock bands? If it wasn't Taylor Swift, the theme wouldn't be as obvious, but for a singer who wears her emotions on her sleeves this could be much more literal than one would believe.

"It's been a long hot summer and I'm still trying to leave you alone"

This lyric from a song on Mindy Smith's most recent album could indicate that Swift has plenty of feeling left for somebody out there. Or she could just be simply trying to "leave alone" the bronchitis that sidelined her for a week earlier this month.

"We all learn to make mistakes and run from them"

Taylor Swift is good friends with Hayley Williams of Paramore , and is a big fan of the rock band's music. It's no surprise to see her quoting a friend's record, and as the other arm posts have revealed, she enjoys a good sad song regardless of whether she's sharing stories from her personal life or not.

"He looked just like you'd want him too. Some kind of slick, chrome American prince"

This song is rumored to written about Killers' frontman Brandon Flowers parents, which brings up an interesting - albeit unlikely - supposition about Swift's encrypted messages. What if she's just ticked off at her mom and dad? Her mom is around all the time, and there's no doubt that like any teenager/young-adult she's had disagreements with both of them. Venting via her left arm would be a perfectly natural young-person thing to do.

"Don't know why I'm so afraid, if you weren't real I would make you up"

Arthur is from Akron, Ohio, which makes this a likely geographical connection versus a personal statement. Although she could be trying to impress the singer/songwriter by showing her knowledge of his early works.

“I guess to build yourself up so high you had to take her and break her down”

Wouldn't it be especially cruel if Taylor began and abruptly ended a relationship with someone on tour with her? There is no evidence that this is the case, but one can envision this poor guy having to read he left arm every single night. This Keith Urban lyrics sounds to be continuing the narrative most sentences on her arm have built since late May.

"I dream of things that never were and ask why not"

Swift is either quoting politician Robert F. Kennedy or Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. Kennedy was actually quoting Shaw, but given that Swift was in Washington D.C., we tend to believe she was paying tribute to the late politician and brother to Senator Ted Kennedy and President John Kennedy. It's the first time on this tour an arm quote has come from somewhere other than a song lyric.

"'Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia freedom"

Swift chose lyrics from Montgomery Gentry's 'My Town' for her show in Pittsburgh, although her hometown of Wyomissing is much closer to Philadelphia. As expected, the singer finds a way to pay tribute to the city she grew up living and breathing with this classic Elton John lyric.

"And up in the air they would write your name there, but love would fall to pieces in the rain"

Date: 8/09/11 in Chicago, Ill. | Song: Patty Griffin, 'Christina'

It's rumored that Patty Griffin wrote this song about the tragic life of Christina Onassis. It is a jaded love song if there ever was one. Other lyrics include "If you had the real thing how would you tell / Liars can say it just as well," and "A hundred love letters and none of them true." Does Taylor Swift simply have an attraction to fatal love songs, or is she truly hurting herself? We'll likely have to wait until the next album to find out for sure.

"If you want to be somebody else, change your mind"

Swift was 10-years-old when this song was released in 2000. It's a different style of lyric than others she's inked on her left arm during the Speak Now Tour. While a few have been geographically linked, most have been angry or remorseful or reflected scorn or heartbreak. The singer's music can be equally inspiring, so it's good to see her thinking positive thoughts once again.

"I got a really good heart, I just can't catch a break"

Ryan Adams is one of the few singer-songwriters able to evoke pathos as effortlessly as Swift. There may not be a better lyric to sum up what we know about Swift's love life. It does seem like she's often the benefactor of crude jerkery.

"And the hardest part was letting go, not taking part"

Swift chooses another song about breaking up, or being broken up with or just general heartache. Since early June, the majority of her chosen lyrics have been of this brand. Another theory -- aside from the breakup theory expressed repeatedly throughout this list -- is that by finding a place of great sadness before a show begins, Swift can properly tell the stories within her songs. She begins low, so she can end high. Hey, it's just a theory.

“Find the grace in all the things that you can't change, and help somebody if you can”

Edmonton is a long ways away from the southern country-rocker's homestate of Florida, so we can rule out some sort of geographical connection. This arm lyric stands out. Swift had mostly chosen singer-songwriters to decorate her left arm with, and when she did move to the rock genre (the Van Zant brothers are individually huge names in classic rock), she chose people like Bruce Springsteen. The Van Zants? Well, the 21-year-old singer has no doubt proven to be well-rounded. This inspirational lyric fits in nicely with some of her more uplifting Sharpie stylings.

“Hey brother, we're all learning to love again”

Swift first quoted Kearney in early June using the "I guess we're all one phone call from our knees" lyric from his 'Closer to Love' song. Perhaps this song could be the second bookend to an emotionally difficult time in her life. Her chosen arm lyrics have been more optimistic as of late -- far more so than those dark days in early June.

"Don't worry baby, everything will turn out all right"

Not including the George Bernard Shaw quote, this is the oldest lyric Swift has drawn on her left arm. The Beach Boys sing about a lover learning to trust again. Could Swift be trying to learn the same thing? The more interesting question is: How did she become a fan of the Beach Boys?

"But my heart cried out for you, California"

Mitchell's song, another geocentric choice, mixes politics and social awareness but at the end is just a love song for the state Swift is spending a week or so visiting. She has a home in L.A., so like Mitchell, there's no doubt she feels more and more at home with each return visit.

"Love Actually is all around"

Swift is quoting Hugh Grant's character from this 2003 movie. It's the first time she's quoted a movie on tour. Aside from one historical quote she's stuck to song lyrics. We're seeing a more optimistic Taylor Swift as of late. Perhaps her broken heart has healed. Or maybe this movie was just on HBO the night before.

"I wish that I could have this moment for life"

There is no evidence that Swift now counts Minaj amongst her new B-F-F's, but she doesn't seem very chummy with artists from the pop side of the radio lately so perhaps she's doing her friend a solid. The song is about two kids who share a dream, grow up, and realize they've achieved it together. Yet another uplifting lyric. Perhaps it's just the sweet California air, but Swift's left arm seems happier these days.

"After all that we've been through, I know we're cool"

There have been reports that Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift are once again speaking/friends/lovers. The seriousness of their relationship depends on what sources you believe, but all this talk could have led Swift to let her former flame know her arms are open by penning this lyric on her left arm.

"For what it's worth, it was worth all the while"

While Green Day is from California, it's somewhat of a stretch to call them a San Jose band so we're going to rule out a geographical arm-lyric. Green Day lead singer says he wrote this song after a difficult break up with a girl who was moving to Ecuador. He was trying to make peace with the separation. Perhaps Swift is now trying at that stage with the guy we think she split with in June.

"Tell me everything I want to hear like that was your favorite year"

Date: 9/03/11 in Sacremento, Calif. | Song: 'Favorite Year,' Dixie Chicks

Yet another song about saying Good-bye to lover. " You looked at me like no one else / But sometimes love just doesn't seem to conquer all / We search for someone else to blame / But sometimes things can't stay the same, " the Dixie Chicks sing. See above to catch up on the potential boy-drama in Swift's life this summer.

"You’re just somewhere that I’ve been, and I won’t go back again"

Three songs in a row about getting over an ex. Swift is either hinting about her personal life or she's stuck in a 'Friends' marathon watching Rachel and Ross break up, get back together, break up, get back together etc...

"You are the ever-living ghost of what once was"

Swift throws a curveball in the narrative. This song is about a troubled relationship, but the chorus goes, "No one's gonna love you more than I do." So who's she talking to? If it's a reference to Joe Jonas (rumors are swirling that they're getting "friendly" again) than things have really heated up quickly.

"There was always something that meant more to you than me"

Andrew's song is a kiss-off to a guy that didn't appreciate her. Swift certainly has a few targets to fire that sort of song at, but quite frankly we're not sure which one is on her mind. Is it the guy from early June or have things with Joe Jonas took a drastic turn for the worse? Maybe she's just messing with the media?

"Where were you when the world stopped turning"

It's unfortunate Swift was in Canada on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. She played this song for her Vancouver audience, but the song didn't have nearly as much influence on Canadian fans as it would have American. It was still a nice thought, and an obvious choice for her left arm. For the record, Swift was in fifth grade, at school "When the World Stopped Turning."

“Be a best friend, tell the truth and overuse 'I love you'”

From time to time one figures Swift ignores any personal drama happening in her life and chooses a song to scribble down her left arm just because it's a dang good song. This might be one of those occasions. Of course, she could also be giving advice to potential beau.

"This one's for the girls who love without holding back"

This song is similar to the one Swift penned on her arm the previous night in that both suggest unrestrained love for someone or something. The theme has us thinking there is indeed something from her private life that ties these two ideas together. It's also not lost that three of the four Arm Lyrics from Nashville shows on this tour have been from country songs. The other was from Selena Gomez, but we'll allow the idea that this project wasn't fully formed on the Speak Now tour's first night.

"Love, save the empty and save me."

McCarley's song from her 2009 album of the same name was used during an episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' and in the movie 'He's Just Not That Into You.' While we can't say that is how Swift learned of the Texas born artist -- she's proved to be quite an encyclopedia of music -- it's not an unreasonable assumption. While this may fit with the theme Swift has crafted on this tour, it seems more likely she just picked a good lyric from a great song.

"Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face"

Most likely this is a geographical tribute. This song from 2002 was chosen as the official rock song of Oklahoma, but we're still giving Swift tons of credit for A) knowing this fact and B) bringing attention to a quirky rock band that's been around for almost 30 years but never broke the mainstream seal. The Flaming Lips are from Oklahoma City, Okla.

"I hope you know that even if I don't, I wanted to."

Date: 9/24/11 in Kansas City, Okla. | Song: 'Even if I Don't,' Rachel Yamagata

This song begins with, " I miss you most in the morning / Most every morning / I wake up thinking / I could call / I could come visit / I could come running / We could relive it. " Yep, Taylor Swift if feeling blue again. Boy troubles maybe, or perhaps she's longing for her dad or a pet. Once again the singer reaches back for an artist flying way under the radar. Her iPod must be full of unheard of gems like this.

"But it flew away from her reach, so she ran away in her sleep and dreamed of paradise."

This is one of the longest arm lyrics yet. She must have written very, very small. As far as content, the Coldplay song could be a theme for Swift. It's about a girl with romantic dreams who keeps getting her heart broken by various people.

"Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride."

This is the second Jimmy Eat World lyric Swift has scribbled down her arm. This 2002 hit was the band's biggest, and it's mostly words of encouragment to a girl who's down on her luck. They actually wrote it about their professional situation at the time, but Swift certainly isn't having troubles there, so we assume that once again her heart is hurting.

"Just as free, free as we'll ever be."

This is a geographical nod to the Georgia based country rockers. It's interesting that she chose 'Free' over 'Chicken Fried' or even 'Toes.' Both were bigger hits that seem to fall more in line with her pop-country stylings. 'Free' isn't melancholy, but it's definitely more emotional than some of the band's other hits.

"No telling where it'll take you, just live your life."

T.I. surprised Swift's audience by making a cameo on Oct. 2. With the country singer singing Rhianna's parts, he performed this hit from 2008. For her part, Swift performed the song like she wrote it. Previously, Swift had invited hip-hop star Usher on stage with her in Atlanta.

"It's easy saying nothing when there's nothing to say."

Another song about a relationship that has run its course. Swift continues with the trend of choosing songs about either heartbreak, getting over a lover or being spurned by a lover.

"She's out there on her own and she's alright."

This song is Shawn Colvin's biggest hit, winning a Grammy in 1998. The lyrics are destructive, to say the least. Colvin talks about burning a house down. Thus far no news has broke about any of Swift's homes burning down.

"A little voice inside my head said, "Don't look back. You can never look back"

Date: 10/08/11 in Dallas, Texas. | Song: 'Boys of Summer,' Don Henley

This is a geographic tribute to Henley as he was born in Gilmer, Texas. More likely Swift chose the song because of the lyrical content. " I thought i knew what love was what did i know / Those days are gone for ever / I should just let them go ," he sings. Who ever hurt Swift four months ago really scarred her.

“Through autumn's advancing we'll stay young, go dancing.”

An unusually happy song from Death Cab For Cutie, and an unusually optimistic choice for an arm lyric by Taylor Swift. It's nice to think that perhaps the cloudy days of heartbreak have given way to a little sunshine. We'll find for sure in three days.

“Can you still feel the butterflies? Can you still hear the last goodnight?"

It's not as plucky as the Death Cab song but it's in the right direction. This is a more introspective Jimmy Eat World song. Taylor seems to be considering life's big questions while hoping there's an angel for her afterall. This is the third Jimmy Eat World song Swift has scrolled on her arm during the Speak Now tour.

“I hope to god I would’ve done something good with my life.”

Holy smokes! Three posts in a row that are not centered on heartache. Swift chose a song from Canadian country group Doc Walker. It's a song of independence, choosing your own path and taking responsibility for the choices you make. We'll find out if the sunshine lasts on Oct. 20 in San Diego.

"Memories fade like looking through a fogged mirror"

It's difficult to offer a guess as to what Taylor Swift was thinking when she scribbled this on her arm before the San Diego show. The song was a huge hit for alt-rockers MGMT in 2008. The message has to do with controlling impulses or being told to control impulses. Is someone treating Swift like a child?

"May angels lead you in. Hear you me my friends."

This song is about saying thank you to someone who you're no longer able to say thank you to. A literal interpretation would push one to theorize that someone close to Swift passed away. However one could also interpret the lyric as someone who she can't talk to any longer is in need of gratitude. Either way, Swift is missing someone close to her if one believes she chooses arm lyrics for personal reason. She could just draw them in on a whim.

“You know you're doing better on your own, so don't buy in.”

It's the third time in five nights Swift has chosen Jimmy Eat World to decorate her arm, and it's the second time during the Speak Now tour she's chosen 'The Middle.' The band is from Mesa, Ariz., so Swift is no doubt paying tribute to the boys' hometown. Alas, it's another geographical reference. However it's clear Swift is a huge fan of the alt-rock band.

"Where love is just a lyric in a children's rhyme, a sound bite"

This Grammy nominated hit from 2006 was actually about the war in Iraq. Just days before this show President Obama announced all American troops were leaving Iraq. This explanation is such a variant from the normal Swift arm-lyric, that it almost sounds unbelievable. Perhaps the 21-year-old is more worldly than she's ever been give credit for.

"And I never saw blue like that before across the sky around the world"

Date: 10/26/11 in Austin, Texas. | Song: 'Never Saw Blue Like That,' Shawn Colvin

Perhaps more interesting than the lyric Swift chose for her arm are the words that follow in Colvin's song. " I can't believe a month ago / I was alone, I didn't know you / I hadn't seen or heard you're name / And even now, I'm so amazed / It's like a dream, It's like a rainbow, it's like the rain ." It's been quite awhile since Swift swam in self-pity with her arm lyric. Perhaps there is a new ray of sunshine in her life.

“'Cause happiness throws a shower of sparks”

The title of this song is misleading because it's all about chasing, and rarely finding happiness. What an up-and-down world Swift lives in. One hopes she's just choosing songs she likes and not actually picking the songs that best represent what she is going through. That would be exhausting.

"But darling, I wish you well On your way to the wishing well"

Many think this song is about death, which would be a perfect topic for the night before Halloween. However this song isn't necessarily spooky. It seems more likely Swift just has a fondness for this great songwriter. She's chosen lyrics from Griffin before, and picked a beautiful message to put on her arm before this show. Another lyric earlier this month was also about death or losing someone, so it's possible she's grieving.

"It's love's illusions that I recall I really don't know love at all."

Date: 11/05/11 in Houston, Texas. | Song: 'Both Sides, Now,' Joni Mitchell

Other lyrics shine more light on why Swift may have chosen this classic Joni Mitchell song. "I've looked at love from both sides now / From give and take, and still somehow / It's love's illusions that I recall / I really don't know love at all. " her left arm isn't big enough for all of that, but the message is clear. She's still a woman healing from a break up.

"Birds flying high, you know how I feel"

Swift won the CMA Award for Entertainer of the Year less than 24 hours before this show. There's no doubt that is why she is feeling good. Credit Swift for digging deep into her iPod to find a lyric that captures her spirit.

"I could rest my head just knowing that you were mine"

Date: 11/12/11 in Tampa, Fla. | Song: 'November Rain,' Guns N' Roses

While this could be a lyric dedicated to a love she's lost and wants back or a new flame, it could also be a tribute to her new CMA trophy. It could also be a sweet ode to her new kitten Meredith . Not too many people would dedicate a hard-rock song to a kitten, but Swift is indeed unlike many people.

"Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly"

A very good week wrapped up for Swift in Miami, and it's possible she's viewing her good fortune at the CMA Awards as a turning point it what seems to have been a difficult year. If this is true, there's reasons for fans to be excited about the next stage in Swift's personal and professional life. She's ready to write a new chapter.

"I feel lost again but this time for the best"

This song by singer-songwriter Meredith Godreau is about pining for someone from afar. It's a happier, more upbeat lyric -- a stark contrast to many of the melancholy messages she'd chosen prior to her wins at the CMA Awards. It's doubtful this song signifies a crush or new relationship, but it may be an indicator as to where Swift is at emotionally.

"We learned more from a 3 minute record than we ever learned in school"

Date: 11/17/11 in Raleigh, N.C. | Song: 'No Surrender,' Bruce Springsteen

Springsteen showed up at this show in Raleigh. The classic rock legend has a daughter who attends nearby Duke University and he brought her and a few friends to the show. Before Swift went on stage Springsteen appeared backstage and strummed a few chords on the 21-year-old's acoustic. She posted a picture of the encounter on Twitter.

"Where would we be today If I never drove that car away"

Date: 11/17/11 in Columbia, S.C. | Song: 'Don't Think I Don't Think About It,' Darius Rucker

This is another lyric that serves as a thank you note to an artist who was nice enough to take time to appear with Swift on stage. Rucker and Swift sang ' Alright ,' much to the delight of his hometown crowd.

“May these memories break our fall”

It's the perfect song for Swift to close the Speak Now tour with. The singer has said that this song is about her band, producer and all of the fans that helped her "build this brick by brick." It's a thank you note to finish what was arguably the year's best tour.

"Bring on all the pretenders, one day, we will be remembered"

These last two shows in New York City are the only in which Swift chose lyrics from her own song to scroll down her arm. While often the lyrics she chose felt like reactions to something happening in her personal life, it's likely she had this song in mind to close the tour for quite awhile.

Taylor Swift announces ‘Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)’ is coming in July

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour - Houston, TX

Taylor Swift  let fans in her hometown of Nashville to be the first to get the official news: “Speak Now” will be the next album in her “Taylor’s Version” series of re-recorded albums.

Swift is giving fans plenty of time to pre-order the album: She revealed that it’s coming out July 7.

“I think rather than me speaking about it,” she said, to screams, as fans realized from the language that the long-awaited announcement was at hand, “I thought I would show you, so if you would direct your attention” to the big screens…” There, the album cover and release date were shown on the big screen.

Upon the announcement at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium, the city turned on purple lights on the nearby bridge over the Cumberland River.

About 10 minutes after making the announcement, she posted to her social accounts. “It fills me with such pride and joy to announce that my version of Speak Now will be out July 7 (just in time for July 9th, iykyk,” she wrote, using the acronym for “iykyk.” (The July 9 reference refers to a specific mention of that date in the lyrics of “Last Kiss” — believed to be a date in 2008 when she went to Texas to visit then-boyfriend Joe Jonas.)

“I first made Speak Now, completely self-written, between the ages of 18 and 20. The songs that came from this time in my life were marked by their brutal honesty, unfiltered diaristic confessions and wild wistfulness. I love this album because it tells a tale of growing up, flailing, flying and crashing… and living to speak about it. With six extra songs I’ve sprung loose from the vault, I absolutely cannot wait to celebrate Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) with you on July 7th.”

In an additional image, Swift wrote, “I always looked at this album as my album, and the lump in my throat expands to a quivering voice as I say this. Thanks to you, dear reader, it finally will be. I consider this music to be, along with your faith in me, the best thing that’s ever been mine.” The “it finally will be” in this message presumably refers to Swift now having a version of the collection that she fully owns, as opposed to the original Big Machine recording. (The “best thing that’s ever been mine” line is a direct quote from “Mine,” which was the lead single from “Speak Now” in 2010.)

Fans had a pretty strong indication of what was coming. Wristbands given out to fans turned purple at the end of her previous concert this past Sunday, and electronic banners coming into Nissan Stadium were purple-hued.

Swifties had long speculated whether “Speak Now” or “1989” would be next to get the re-recording-plus-bonus-tracks treatment, with the evidence increasingly weighing in her third album’s favor.

The Taylor Nation account went live on Instagram to carry the spoken announcement for fans, with barely a minute’s advance notice.

The new cover art has modern-day Swift wearing a dress similar to the one she wore on the front of the original album in 2010, but with a more serious expression that marks her as definitely not the 20-year-old who posed for the Big Machine edition’s cover.

Swift did not immediately release titles or any other information about the bonus “Vault” tracks, other than to say there would be six. The total 22-song count for the release is confirmed on a  product page  that went up shortly after the announcement, where it’s revealed that the LP version will be a three-record set, released on “three unique violet marble color vinyl discs.”

So far on the  Eras Tour , Swift has only been performing one song on a nightly basis from the “Speak Now” album, “Enchanted,” far less than any other album she’s put out except for her debut, which has no nightly representation. Rather than lead fans to suspect that she disfavors the album, that peculiar choice to make the album practically MIA in the three-hour-plus sets only heightened anticipation that she might be waiting to add more material from “Speak Now” until she was ready to announce the re-recording.

Swift made her announcement right after moving onto the B-stage for the solo-acoustic “surprise songs” segment that comes late in the evening each night on tour. Although Swift inevitably used the moment to premiere a “Speak Now” song that had not previously been played on the tour, “Sparks Fly,” accompanying herself on the guitar, she didn’t devote both surprise slots to the album. The second surprise number Friday was from a different album — “Teardrops on My Guitar,” from her debut, performed perhaps counterintuitively on the piano, not guitar.

(A third song made its debut on the tour Friday night, albeit not during the surprise songs segment. During the portion of the show dedicated to the album “Red,” opening act  Phoebe Bridgers , making her first appearance on the Eras Tour, joined Swift to sing a duet of “Nothing New,” which they recorded together for the Vault section of “Red (Taylor’s Version).”)

Swift has been recording all-new versions of all of her Big Machine releases, with only “ Fearless ” and “ Red ” having come out so far in “Taylor’s Version” editions. The new albums have been strong sellers, as fans follow her wishes to buy and stream only the versions where she owns the recordings outright, after her public distress at her Big Machine catalog having been sold against her wishes. The “TV” editions have also included copious bonus tracks of songs Swift wrote but never released during those eras.

“Speak Now” was a landmark album for Swift 13 years ago, becoming the first and only album for which Swift was the sole songwriter on all the tracks — seen at the time as a reaction to cynics who believed that the young singer’s co-writers must have done the heavier lifting on her first two albums. Having made the point, Swift resumed working with writing collaborators on the following release, “Red.”

The album is also remembered for marking a more decided turn toward pop, from her country origins, even though it would be another couple of albums still before she firmly declared herself a pop artist. At the same time, it signified a move into still-bolder songwriting, as in “Dear John,” still one of Swift’s most strikingly raw songs to date. Six songs from the album charted in the Billboard Hot 100: “Mine,” “Back to December,” “Mean,” “The Story of Us,” “Sparks Fly” and “Ours” (the last of which did not appear until a deluxe edition with extra tracks was belatedly released).

Although none of the songs from the album went to No. 1, “Speak Now” itself debuted atop the Billboard 200 with over a million copies sold in its first week. The Big Machine record ultimately spent six weeks at No. 1 and has been certified six-times platinum.

Raging fantasies … Taylor Swift performing in Ohio, 30 June 2023.

Taylor Swift: Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) review – re-recording project starting to feel wearying and pointless

(Republic) The latest of Swift’s re-recorded albums suffers from the loss of her youthful voice – as well as her decision to alter lyrics out of step with today’s sensibilities

O riginally released in 2010, Speak Now was the first Taylor Swift album to go studs up, foregrounding the combative spirit that would come to define her. It is to date her only entirely self-written record, her attempt to vanquish critics who had credited her co-writers with the success of her first two albums. (The sing-songily vindictive Mean called out one directly.) The fairytale romances of her first two records turned bitter as Swift turned 20 and experienced real heartache. In the bruised epic Dear John, one of her greatest songs, she rebuked musician John Mayer, 12 years her senior, for treating her poorly when they dated. Her country sound hardened accordingly, skewing towards pop-punk and gothic rock. Even the ballads expanded to an indomitable scale, primed to fill the vast rooms she was now selling out. Eleven of the original 14 tracks are classics, and Speak Now (the 2010 version) remains a five-star smash.

The artwork for Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).

The album is premised on Swift saying the things she wished she had said: an extended fantasy about having the last word in heartbreak – but also, for the first time, her own narrative. (Innocent consoles Kanye West, who in 2009 invaded Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music awards, instigating a pop-cultural paradigm shift that we’re still living through.)

Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is a continuation of that spirit. It’s the third album in Swift’s project to re-record her first six records, made for the label Big Machine, after the masters were sold to an old foe, Scooter Braun. Swift claimed she wasn’t offered the chance to buy them back herself; re-recording them gives her ownership of the new master recordings and forces any directors wishing to sync her music to use her versions. The saga educated a generation of young fans about music rights and made supporting this extremely lucrative re-recording campaign an ethical issue.

Your mileage may vary. Still only halfway through, the project is starting to feel a little wearying and pointless, other than in the business sense. There is limited value in playing spot-the-difference between the recordings, and only a few of the bonus From the Vault tracks – recorded at the time but not released – have been keepers.

I hope the three albums still to come – her self-titled debut, 1989 and Reputation – arrive as some sort of box set: the first is just endearing juvenilia; the other two, along with their attendant, gruelling press cycles, live far too fresh in the memory to revisit.

And Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) dilutes some of the original’s acid. One issue with Swift revisiting her older work is that her voice has changed with age. Now 33, she’s a much richer and more skilled singer than she was then, but their piercing, youthful twang was what made these songs kick harder in all their dressing-downs and rabid desires, emphasising the sense of a girl wading into adult waters. “You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter,” from opener Mine, is one of her best lyrics, but here its reckless glee is a touch muted. Mean also sounds more conciliatory in its new softness. Otherwise, the musical consistency is as impressive as ever.

More than the re-recordings of Fearless or Red, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is a project of revisionist history. As well as these re-recordings, Swift is currently engaged in a huge retrospective project, the world-conquering Eras tour, in which she plays songs from each of her albums (bar the debut). (Canny branding again: most tours have a wide-ranging setlist.) On one recent date in Minneapolis, she instructed fans not to go after Mayer when she released the updated Dear John, telling them: “I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19 except the songs I wrote and the memories we made together … I’m not putting this album out so that you can go and feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about.”

While that song preserves her youthful sense of being hurt, another has received an edit. Pre-release, there was speculation about whether Swift would change the lyrics to the raging Better Than Revenge, in which she sang of a romantic rival: “She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress.” Swift hasn’t performed it since the original Speak Now tour, and in 2014 told the Guardian : “I was 18 when I wrote that. That’s the age you are when you think someone can actually take your boyfriend. Then you grow up and realise no one can take someone from you if they don’t want to leave.” Sure enough, the new version has different lyrics: “He was a moth to the flame / She was holding the matches.” The song remains a banger, with a massive firework of a “whoa-oh!” in the chorus, but the lyric change feels feeble, as well as inconsistent with the rest of the project. It’s the point where re-recording becomes relitigation.

It feels bad faith to her fans, too: no one listens to the original and thinks, “Yes, slut-shaming is good!” Hayley Williams of Paramore appears on one From the Vault track – an artist who has reckoned very publicly with the same issue. For years, the pop-punk band stopped playing their 2007 song Misery Business due to the line “once a whore, you’re nothing more”. Then, in 2022, Billie Eilish asked Williams to perform it with her at Coachella, and this year the band restored it to their setlists in response to fan demand. Both lyrics are valuable artefacts of how girlhood felt in the late 2000s, when women were still routinely pitted against each other culturally and “not like the other girls” culture thrived.

after newsletter promotion

The song with Williams, Castles Crumbling, is the best bonus track from a slightly bland selection. As with Nothing New, a From the Vault collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers from Red (Taylor’s Version), the crestfallen, delicate song finds Swift and Williams reckoning with fame and falling from grace – a prescient song for Swift to have written at the outset of her imperial phase. Although Castles Crumbling is nowhere near pop-punk, Williams’ presence, along with that of Fall Out Boy on the rueful stadium chugger Electric Touch, is a good bit of revisionist history, rightly honouring Speak Now as emo canon.

I Can See You is actively bad Maroon 5-core, though the lyrics are intriguingly sexual for an artist who kept things pretty chaste lyrically well into early adulthood: “I could see you up against the wall with me,” she sings.

These bonus tracks are mostly notable for this streak of raging fantasy, from the carnal to, in Timeless, Swift finding old photos of couples in an antique shop and imagining herself yearning for a lover who’s gone off to war. It’s endearingly unhinged, and she knows it. On the limpid, puttering Foolish One, she sweetly chides herself for her naivety: “Stop checkin’ your mailbox for confessions of love / That ain’t never gonna come” – Swift the realist v Swift the hopeless romantic. Some of her best songwriting puts her in conversation with herself like this. Parts of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) feel more like she’s silencing herself.

Taylor Swift returns to Nashville, reveals ‘Speak Now’ date

Taylor Swift performs during "The Eras Tour" on Friday, May 5, 2023, at Nissan Stadium in...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) —  Taylor Swift  is playing catch-up with her fans this year in a massive and impressive stadium show that embraces her artistic reinventions.

Nearly two months into the 52-show Eras Tour, Swift returned Friday to the origins of her musical career in Nashville, Tennessee, a city she outgrew as a country starlet destined for pop stardom.

In front of 70,000 fans, Swift  dropped the news  that she would be releasing a re-recording of her Nashville-era 2010 record, “Speak Now,” on July 7.

Swift started  releasing new versions  of her early albums in 2021, after a dispute over the ownership of the masters, which were sold to — and then by — music executive  Scooter Braun.  “Speak Now,” Swift’s third album, will also be the third “Taylor’s Version” recording — she released the re-recordings of  2008′s “Fearless”  and  2012′s “Red”  in 2021.

“Speak Now” was an album she wrote entirely by herself and she performed one of the singles, “Sparks Fly” after her announcement, followed by “Teardrops on My Guitar,” from her 2006 self-titled debut record.

The tour  started chaotically  with a breakdown of Ticketmaster’s ability to withstand  the demand of fans,  who were eager to see Swift after an extended hiatus from touring due to the coronavirus pandemic. Those who were lucky enough to get into the first of three shows in Nashville made sure to show out in their cosplay outfits inspired by Taylor’s songs, ranging from marching band geek to cardigans and  cottagecore.

“I moved to Nashville nearly 20 years ago,” she told the crowd. “And this dream I had since I was so little I can’t even remember even first having it, this dream came true because of this town and the people in it.”

She started off the nearly 3.5-hour show with a line from  “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince”  as a gentle spring rain sprinkled on the crowd: “It’s been a long time coming, but it’s you and me, that’s my whole world.”

The Eras tour theme is a natural fit for an artist whose music is often  so self-referential,  winking and smiling at the previous Taylors and their moments. The show is broken up into acts, not moving chronologically through her discography, but instead presenting like a house with many rooms. The color schemes, choreographed dancers and outfits support the overall feeling of musical theater, with a stage that incorporates rising platforms and hidden trap doors she can disappear through.

With over 40 songs on the setlist from her 10 albums, Swift hits a lot of the highlights of her singles, ranging from “You Belong With Me,” “Shake It Off,” “Bad Blood,” “Anti-Hero” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” But she also made time for special songs, like her 10-minute fan favorite “All Too Well,” and brought back opening act  Phoebe Bridgers  to perform their duet “Nothing New,” a vault track released on “Red (Taylor’s Version).”

It was a five-year wait to see all the glittering chapters of Swift’s career on stage together, but the pop star’s marathon performance carried fans through to the last notes.

Exultant crowds descending on cities. Handmade friendship bracelets to trade with fellow fans. Mayors bestowing honors in tribute to her arrival.

What could prompt such rituals and celebrations? Well, if you’re a bit confused, it’s fair to assume you might be just a casual listener of Taylor Swift, and the news coverage about parking at Gillette Stadium and what weather to expect for the weekend concerts has seemed a bit much.

But not to fret. As one of several in-house Swifties who by Spotify’s count listened to 46,968 minutes of Swift’s music last year, I am here to help with a crash course in Swift fandom ahead of this weekend’s three-night stand at Gillette Stadium.

What does ‘13’ mean to Taylor Swift?

The number 13 has long held a special place in Swift’s heart and she often references it. In 2009, Swift told MTV News that 13 is not only the date of her birthday (Dec. 13, 1989), but is also a lucky number that has links to many of her career successes. For example, her first album went gold in 13 weeks and her first top-charting song had a 13-second intro, she told MTV News.

During past tours and live performances, Swift has drawn 13 on the back of her hand. She even wore a New England Patriots jersey bearing the number during her first show at Gillette Stadium, which was 13 years ago. She continues to incorporate the number into her work, sometimes as a hidden message known as one of her signature Easter eggs .

Friendship bracelets: Why are fans making and trading them?

Many fans are leaving shows not just with concert merchandise but homemade souvenirs in the form of friendship bracelets. The bracelet-making and trading trend was inspired by a lyric from “You’re On Your Own, Kid,” from Swift’s most recent album, “Midnights.” In the song, she sings, “So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it.” Fans took those words to heart and have been making the bracelets at home — many showing off their creations on social media — and meeting others during concerts to exchange them. Swifties have also given them to celebrities in attendance.

What’s with the frenzy over tour merchandise?

Fans have been clamoring to get their hands on “The Eras Tour” merchandise , particularly items that are sold only at shows and not available online. Many fans (or their parents) have gotten in line well before sunrise — as was the case Thursday at Gillette Stadium — out of fear the most-prized items would sell out. Perhaps the most popular piece of merchandise is a modest blue crewneck, which has gained cult status after fans showed it off on TikTok.

How are different cities and venues welcoming Swift?

It all started in Glendale, Ariz. — the first stop on “The Eras Tour.” Sue Bredding, the city’s communication director and a Swift fan, told the Wall Street Journal that she wanted to acknowledge the city’s status as the first stop and that Swift was the first artist to sell out two nights at its State Farm Stadium. So the idea to temporarily name Glendale “Swift City” was born. Since then, other cities have jumped on board.

Las Vegas displayed a Swift-inspired light show at the Gateway Arches; Tampa, Fla. , presented Swift a key to the city and invited her to be mayor for the day; Nashville honored her with a bench at Centennial Park and issued a proclamation recognizing “Taylor Swift homecoming weekend”; and Arlington, Tex ., offered her a key to the city and renamed Randol Mill Road to Taylor Swift Way for the weekend.

Gillette Stadium has changed its name on social media to “Gil13tte Stadium (”Taylor’s Version”) and its biography to proclaim itself as the “home of Taylor Swift’s first NFL stadium show.”

Gillette Stadium has changed its name in honor of Taylor Swift.

Why is it called ‘The Eras Tour’?

Throughout Swift’s groundbreaking career, each album cycle has been defined by its own aesthetic, sound, and how she is perceived by her fans. For “The Eras Tour,” Swift is revisiting her past and exploring her present on stage, both in terms of the production and the songs she performs. (Spoiler: don’t expect the eras to be in order, or for each to receive equal attention.)

What special dances and chants are popular with fans?

Swifties are nothing if not creative.

While not every fan approves of chanting during specific songs , a fair amount take part. Some started organically at shows, spread on social media, and then became popular. Others were inspired by her own music and live performances, including chanting “Taylor, you’ll be fine,” during “Anti-Hero” (inspired by the remix with the Bleachers) and clapping during “You Belong With Me.”

With the advent of TikTok, dances have also become popular. Some of the more well-known routines have been choreographed by Mikael Arellano, whose dance to “Bejeweled” went viral. Swift performed the dance at her show in Philadelphia and afterwards gave Arellano the hat she wore while singing “22.”

Why are some fans hoping it rains at their show?

For some fans — and even Swift herself — a rain show only heightens the drama of the event and overall excitement. One of her most legendary performances happened at Gillette Stadium on June 25, 2011, during the “Speak Now Tour,” when Swift performed about half the show in the pouring rain. She has since called it one of her greatest memories and some fans are hoping for another rain show this weekend.

She performed her first rain show of this tour in Nashville , telling the crowd that it’s “such a bonding experience” and joking that “we all look like river otters.” Fans applauded her for sticking it out despite the weather rather than canceling the show.

What are Swift’s ‘Era’s Tour’ outfits? What are fans wearing?

Fans are known for going all out at Swift concerts, with outfits involving weeks or even months of planning. Some Swifties put their crafting and sewing skills to work, to replicate outfits Swift has worn onstage, at events, on magazine covers, and in music videos (the “Junior Jewels” tee from “ You Belong With Me ” is a classic). Others like to have fun with it — for instance, dressing up as a fridge (listen to “All Too Well” to understand) or one of her cats (Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson, and Benjamin Button).

Swift, meanwhile, goes through an impressive number of outfits during “The Eras Tour,” wearing an assortment of designers including Oscar de la Renta and Versace. The fashion extravaganza has left fans in awe over the quality of her outfits and the speed of her wardrobe changes as she transitions through the eras.

What’s with the massive crowds outside venues and livestreams?

You may recall the absolute frenzy over tickets to “The Eras Tour.” Ticketmaster repeatedly malfunctioned, prices instantly surged to staggering heights on the secondhand market, and shows sold out in no time. Unable to see the show, fans have done the next best thing, gathering outside venues in huge numbers to soak up the anticipation. Swifties have also tuned in to livestreams broadcast by fans at the show on social media. The trend is so popular that Taylor Nation , Swift’s management team, capitalized on it to announce the release of “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” on July 7.

i feel like we aren’t focusing enough of the fact that taylornation themselves went on a LIVESTREAM of the eras tour like they are well aware of the mass livestreams happening every night and they chose to use it to their advantage to announce SNTV is that not hilarious to u guys — dom⭐️SAW TAYLOR (@ev3rhaze) May 6, 2023

What are the ‘surprise songs’ at each show?

On the opening night of the tour, Swift announced she’d be performing two surprise songs during an acoustic set at each show, bringing the setlist to 44 songs . The show spans more than three hours. Swift has made a few caveats so far , saying she reserves the right to perform a song more than once if she feels disappointed with the initial performance or if it’s a song from her latest album, “Midnights.”

She’s done this before, but the suspense seems higher this time, with fans tuning in every weekend to find out what the surprise songs are, and likening the choices to the boom of the cannon during “ The Hunger Games ” to signal fallen tributes.

Does every show have a surprise guest or celebrity attendee?

It’s fair to say Swift has her share of famous pals and many have turned up at her shows this tour, including actress Emma Stone, singer Shania Twain, and longtime friend Selena Gomez.

Swift has also brought a surprise guest to perform with her onstage at select shows, including Marcus Mumford in Las Vegas , Aaron Dessner in Tampa and Nashville, and Phoebe Bridgers , a tour opener who has joined Swift to perform their duet “Nothing New.”

[4] On November 23, 2010, various media outlets—including Billboard Magazine announced the second tour by Swift. Before the tour commenced, Swift performed "The Allure of Taylor Swift" aboard the MS Allure of the Seas at the Allure of the Seas Aquatheater, as apart Royal Caribbean Cruises in January 2011. [6]

The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now — why? ‘Cause she’s busy starring in a Capitol One commercial. In a super nostalgic advertisement for the bank holding company’s Venture X credit card released late Monday (Nov. 1), Taylor Swift starred as a dozen versions of her past selves by recreating her most iconic looks from past album cycles, spanning 2006 to 2022.

Taylor Swift Confirms This ‘Reputation’ Track Will Be on the Eras Tour Setlist

Trending on billboard.

The second Taylor — dressed in a purple dress and ponytail, one of Swift’s Speak Now Tour looks from 2011 — appears again in a later scene, in which she watches a Capitol One customer using his phone to book seat 13A on Flight 1989.

“Good choice!” says Speak Now Taylor, pointing at a number 13 painted on her hand. “My lucky number.”

All the Taylors are then shown crammed together in an elevator. “Going up?” asks one Taylor, dressed in the glitzy circus ringleader outfit she sported in 2013 on the Red Tour.

A Taylor wearing a unitard look from the “Look What You Made Me Do” music video, a Taylor wearing one of her famous Folklore cardigans, and a curly-haired Taylor from her debut self-titled album cycle proceed to join all the other Taylors on the elevator in an epic group selfie.

The commercial comes on the heels of Swift’s announcement that she’s going on tour next year, following a five-year break from live performances. Presented by Capitol One, the Eras Tour will see the 11-time Grammy winner stopping by stadiums in cities across the U.S. (international dates have not yet been announced) with guests artists including Paramore, Phoebe Bridgers, Beabadoobee, HAIM and more.
