Not far from the Croatian coast, Hvar Island is a very popular summer destination, as well as a must on any Split itinerary .

With its incredible beaches, beautiful natural landscapes, cute historical town and awesome food, it’s easy to see why!

This island has become famous recently for its party reputation, however even if you’re not into big parties it’s still an incredible island to visit.

You can do a day trip to Hvar from Split and enjoy the natural and historical beauty of the island, without ever seeing the party side of it, or stay a few nights and live the nightlife.

Best things to do in Hvar Island in one day

So what is there to actually do on Hvar Island? Why does Hvar feature on every Croatia bucket list ? Whether you travel by ferry or do a day tour, what will you actually be exploring on this beautiful Croatian island?

We decided to do our own thing and travel to Hvar with the ferry. There was five of us so we decided it would be cheaper and more fun to rent a car and drive around the island.

I’ve outlined below some of the best things that you can do on Hvar Island if you’re going there solo without a tour.

You can use this as a 1-day Hvar itinerary (assuming you get the first ferry to Hvar and the last one back to Split).

Explore the Hvar Old Town centre

Before you go adventure off to explore the island, the first thing you should do in Hvar Island is explore Hvar Town. This is where you will disembark with the ferry and one of the most beautiful spots on the island.

The old town centre is simply beautiful. The streets and houses are built with traditional stone and have that rustic and old feel to them.

You could wander around the streets all day long, and never get tired of them. The main spots in the town that you should definitely visit are St Stephen’s Cathedral and St Stephen’s Square, right in front of it.

Admire the view from the Spanish Fortress

As you’re wandering around the cute streets of Hvar Town, head up towards Fortica, also known as the Spanish Fortress. From up here you can enjoy an absolutely incredible view.

Entrance to the fortress is 25 HKR. The fort is very well preserved and you can easily spend about an hour exploring all the rooms and cellars of it, as well as the sweeping views over the harbour of Hvar.

Rent a vintage beetle car and drive around the island

We didn’t expect this to be a thing, but were pleasantly surprised to find lots of colourful vintage beetle cars parked on the outskirts of the main square.

If you’re looking to drive around the island with style, this is the way to do it!

We personally had a bad experience since our car rental ripped us off, but don’t let that deter you! Just make sure that what you sign makes sense, drive responsibly and you’ll have a great time.

Hvar has a beautiful coastline. Even driving without a specific end in mind can be very fun. Just enjoy the wind through your hair, the sunshine on your skin and the rolling drives with their epic views.

Explore the beaches of Hvar

Driving for the sake of driving can be fun, but driving with an aim in mind is even better. Once you have your car, it’s time to explore the beaches of Hvar!

Croatia is home to some beautiful beaches, and the same goes for Hvar. We just drove aimlessly for a bit until we eventually reached Malo Zarace Beach. We were the only ones in this little slice of paradise.

There were a lot of rocks and getting in the sea for a swim was a bit painful on the feet, but the crystal clear water and having the beach just for us made it worth it. It’s located about a half hour drive from Hvar Town.

Other popular beaches in Hvar that you can check out are Dubovica Beach, Pokonji Dol Beach, and Milna Beach. At all these beaches you will find a turquoise water and a pristine beach.

Have a drink at Hula Hula Beach Bar at sunset

After exploring the quaint streets of Hvar Town, enjoying the view from the Spanish Fortress and swimming in the clear Croatian sea, you’re probably feeling pretty knackered! It makes for a pretty busy Hvar day trip itinerary.

But there’s one final thing you should do before getting the last ferry back to Split; head over to Hula Hula Beach Bar for a sunset drink!

Hula Hula Beach Bar is located in prime position on the beach, with epic sunset views over the sea.

Hvar is a bit of a party town so even if you visit only for a day, you should get a taste of its nightlife. Grab a drink, some snacks and relax as you watch the sun go into the sea. You could even dance a little if you want!

What to pack for a Hvar day trip

You don’t really need anything special beyond your usual travel essentials and normal outfits. However I’ve listed below a couple items that will make your day trip to Hvar smoother.

Power bank – you don’t want your phone to run out of battery while you’re busy capturing the beautiful views and beaches!

Stainless steel water bottle – save money and reduce plastic consumption by bringing your own water bottle and refilling it.

Sunscreen – I was there in September, and the sun was still really hot! Don’t ruin your trip by getting sunburnt.

Hat – Same as above, the sun is strong, you’ll want some shade for your head during the day!

Waterproof bag – Even if I’m not planning any extreme activities, I like to use a waterproof backpack when I travel to beach and seaside destinations. I’d rather be safe than sorry and ensure all my stuff is dry!

Planning a Hvar day trip from Split is one of the best days out from Croatia’s second-largest city. There are countless incredible places you can visit from Split , however, the idyllic island of Hvar often tops visitors lists. Accessible via direct ferry from Split’s port, you can get to Hvar Island in about an hour depending on the route you take.

Though the island is known for its nightlife, Hvar is an absolute joy to visit by day, as well. Whether you’re looking to wander around a compact and historic old town, find some of the best swimming spots in Croatia, lounge on the beach, prance in lavender fields or sip some local wine, there is a lot to do when spending a day in Hvar.

Table of Contents

How to Get from Split to Hvar

There are numerous ways to get from Split to Hvar and which you choose all depends on your personal preferences and what you’re looking for in a day trip.

By Organised Tour

For those who want to take the planning and logistics out of their day trip to Hvar from Split and simply want to kick back and have a good time, then going on an organised tour is a great option for you.

For example, this guided day tour will pick you up from Split (or Trogir) and take you via boat to the Blue Cave, some smaller islands and swimming spots before you wind out your day in Hvar Town. You can also book a similar tour here .

If you want a bit more intimacy and privacy, then this small group tour is an excellent option, as well. You can also be picked up and dropped off in Split and visit the Blue Cave, swim in the Adriatic along with exploring the town of Hvar. There is a similar private tour available .

And if you want more time to explore the island of Hvar itself, this day tour is an excellent choice. It includes transport to and from Split along with time in Hvar Town and the nearby Pakleni Islands. You can also book this full-day catamaran cruise which includes many of the same things.

Hvar Town

If you want to go to the island independently, then you will need to hop on a ferry from Split to Hvar to get there (that is, unless you happen to have your own boat). There are countless ferries that go from the Croatian mainland to Hvar and which you take really depends on if you have a car or not.

For those who aren’t travelling by car, then your best bet is to hop on a high-speed catamaran that goes directly from the port of Split to Hvar Town. In the summer months, these run extremely frequently and the total journey time is only about an hour. You can view schedules here.

If you’re travelling outside of the high season of June-August, these ferries can be a little bit less frequent, so that is something to keep in mind when you are planning your day trip to Hvar.

For those who are taking the passenger ferry to Hvar, you are going to be a bit limited on what you can feasibly see or do within the confines of a day, however, Hvar Town and its surroundings certainly have enough to offer that a car isn’t entirely necessary in order to enjoy your day trip.

Spanish Fortress in Hvar Town

If you want the most flexibility on your Split to Hvar day trip, then your best bet is to go by car. This option will also include a ferry, just one that can accommodate vehicles.

There are fewer car ferries that leave from Split daily than there are passenger ferries and it takes about twice the time so be aware of this. Like passenger ferries, the car ferries are more frequent in the summer months.

Car ferries leave from the port of Split and arrive at the port of Stari Grad which is located about a 30-minute drive from Hvar Town and the journey is about 2 hours. There is also an option to grab a car ferry from the town of Drvenik that will take you to the town of Sucaraj at the eastern tip of the island.

Keep in mind that while this ferry journey is quicker at about 40 minutes, it also takes about 1.5 hours to drive to Drvenik and another hour to drive from Sucaraj to the western part of the island with the majority of tourist sites. Therefore it’s not a good option for a day trip and is only a good choice if you plan to stay in Hvar.

Having your own car gives you a lot more flexibility to see quite a bit of the island and get around Hvar easily within the confines of one day.

You will have the ability to venture beyond Hvar Town and take in some of the best beaches and some further-flung areas that you wouldn’t be able to get to without your own vehicle should you wish. You can browse car hire options here .

Hvar Day Trip Itinerary

This itinerary is flexible and is great for both those with a car and without. Whether you’re simply looking to explore Hvar town and swim in the crystal clear waters surrounding the island or you’re keen to hit the road and get a bit off the beaten path, seeing Hvar in a day is a day well spend!

The best and easiest way to begin your day trip to Hvar is in Hvar Town itself. Whether you’re arriving via passenger ferry or by car into Stari Grad, we recommend heading here first as it can get very busy as the day goes on.

Begin your day with an excellent view by heading up to the Spanish Fortress. If you have a car, you’re likely going to want to jump in it as it is a bit of a hike up but the view from above is worth it even if you go on your own two feet. If you don’t have a car, it is only about a fifteen-minute walk from the town centre, however, it is quite steep.

You have to pay to enter the fortress (it was €10 per person), however, you can still take in great views of the town and the Pakleni islands below.

As you make your way down from the fortress, take the time to meander through the streets of Hvar Town itself.

There are some lovely winding alleyways to lose yourself in, along with a charming seaside promenade that is perfect for a leisurely stroll. You can also take in the St Stephen’s Cathedral and St Stephen’s Square and wander along to the Franciscan Monastery.

Franciscan Monestary

Head to the Beach

After a morning of exploration, it’s time to hit the beach and soak up the beautiful Adriatic sunshine. There are some lovely little swimming areas in Hvar town itself, however, they aren’t large and can generally fill up quite quickly in the warmer months. There is, for instance, a little beach below the Franciscan Monastery that you could splash around at.

However, if you want to head to a great beach, then consider visiting Pokonji dol Beach which is located just outside of the town centre. You can drive here and there is a large free car park or you could opt to walk or take a taxi. If you walk, it takes about 25 minutes and it’s a flat, minor stroll from the city centre.

The beach itself is, like many Croatian beaches, pebbly but large enough to accommodate several people. It’s set in a protected cove which makes it great for swimming and the crystal clear blue waters are incredibly inviting. There is also a bar and restaurant close by so you don’t need to go hungry while here.

From the beach, you also can view Pokonji Dol Island, which is a small, circular island with a lighthouse atop it.

Pokonji dol Beach

Pakleni Islands

If you’re not keen to head to the beach and want something a bit more exciting, then hop on a water taxi and visit the nearby Pakleni Islands.

Also sometimes referred to as the Paklinski Islands, these is a small archipelago located just off the coast from Hvar and they’re easy to reach from the town centre.

In Hvar Town, there are plenty of places where you can hire a boat of your own or hop on a water taxi that will shuttle you to these little islands. You even could kayak to the islands if you want to get a bit more active. Here, you can enjoy some incredible swimming spots and bask in the crystal-clear Adriatic islands.

Water taxis from Hvar take off from the port of Hvar and are advertised all around the town. Generally, expect to spend around €10-13 for a return trip and there are a few sailings in the afternoon so you will get a few hours on the islands.

You can also choose to go on an organised tour such as this half-day sailing cruise or this kayaking adventure.

Pakleni Islands

Explore Stari Grad

If you’re driving yourself, then make sure to carve out some time at the end of your one day in Hvar to explore the lovely town of Stari Grad before you head back to Split.

This is one of the oldest towns on Hvar (in English, Stari Grad literally means old town) and offers a quiet and more relaxed vibe than in Hvar Town.

Like Hvar Town, there is a tranquil harbourside promenade to wander along and it’s also lined with restaurants and bars, so it’s a great place to grab a drink and relax before hopping back on the ferry. The town of Stari Grad itself also has a lot of lovely, winding alleyways to get lost in and it’s really a charming place to go and explore.

If you don’t want to explore another town, you could also use this opportunity to head to one of the many wineries on Hvar before you catch your ferry.

Though Croatia may not spring to mind as a wine destination (and even Korcula has more of a reputation as a wine island), there are plenty of vineyards dotting the islands that offer tastings. You can take this wine tasting tour if you want to explore with a guide.

There are also plenty of other gastronomic places to stop off at if you’re not interested in wine. There are countless places that produce olive oil or sell Hvar lavender products that you can visit, as well.

In fact, if you’re interested in visiting a lavender farm on the island, then direct yourself to a place called “Lavanda Hvar” where you can get some great photos of the iconic lavender fields.

This field is located just outside of the town of Jelsa, about a 30-minute drive from Hvar Town and about 10 minutes from Stari Grad.

Water taxis depart every 30 minutes from Hvar Harbor, and a return ticket costs between 8€ to 12€. The journey time is 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the island you visit. Self-guided vs group tour to Hvar from Split

If you plan a day trip to Hvar from Split, you might wonder whether it’s better to take a self-guided tour or join an organized group tour. Both options have advantages and disadvantages, so the decision ultimately depends on your preferences and travel style.

The main difference lies in whether you only want to explore Hvar Island and Hvar Town or if you also want to visit other nearby islands. Of course, your budget also plays a role.

A self-guided tour is the most economical option for a day trip from Split to Hvar, as it only requires a 40€ return catamaran ticket. This option gives you plenty of time in Hvar and allows you to be flexible and independent in crafting your own itinerary and setting your own pace.

Hvar, waterfront and arsenal building

On the other hand, organized day trips from Split to Hvar cost anywhere from 100€ to 160€ per person and usually include visits to nearby islands such as Vis, Brac, Budikovac, Solta, and the Pakleni Islands. This presents a great opportunity to experience the beauty of several breathtaking Croatian islands in a short time.

However, such excursions typically only allocate 2 to 3 hours for exploring Hvar. Although this timeframe is enough to explore Hvar Town, immerse yourself in its atmospheric ambiance, and visit the town’s main attractions, it may not give you enough time to indulge in Hvar’s hedonistic delights. Enjoying local wines, savoring island delicacies, and relishing the beaches of Hvar may be constrained.

Certain tours include a stop at the Paklinski Islands, particularly the famous Carpe Diem Beach Club. We highly recommend such a speedboat excursion from Split as it provides an opportunity to visit and experience one of Hvar’s most notable highlights.

Hvar Day Trip Itinerary on a self-guided tour

Take an early ferry from Split to Hvar. Jadrolinija’s catamaran sails at 8.30 a.m., while TP-Line’s catamaran departs at 9.15 a.m. from Split Harbor. The catamaran takes approximately 1 hour to reach Hvar.

Once in Hvar, go to Spanjola Fortress for panoramic views over the town, the sea, and the Paklinski islands. After visiting the fortress, visit other Hvar cultural highlights: the Arsenal, theater, and the loggia.

Palmizana Beach, Pakleni Islands, Hvar

After the sightseeing, head to the waterfront and catch a water taxi to the nearby Paklinski Islands. An archipelago consisting of 14 islands and islets, Paklinski Islands are a must-visit in Hvar. Jerolim, Marinkovac, and Sveti Klement Islands are the most popular. Jerolim is the least developed of the three. Marinkovac Island is home to the famed Carpe Diem Beach Club, while Sveti Klemen is the largest of all, and it offers the most options for eating, drinking, and activities. Swim, snorkel, and enjoy other fun under the sun for a couple of hours. Have a light lunch on the island, then head back to Hvar Town. Now it’s time for a wine tour!

Visit Luviji Winery, located close to the Hvar town and accessible on foot. This lovely boutique winery produces organic wines and has nice vineyards across the slopes between Hvar and Milna.

After having some wine to open your appetite, head to one of Hvar’s restaurants for a late lunch / early dinner. We recommend Black Pepper, Dva Ribara, or Luviji Rooftop.

Have a cocktail, craft beer, or a glass of wine in Backlane Bar before taking a ferry back to Split. The TP-Line ferry departs at 8 p.m., and the Jadrolinija ferry departs from Split at 9 p.m.

Can I visit Hvar on a day trip during the off-season?

Yes, visiting Hvar on a day trip during the off-season is possible. However, it’s not as straightforward as you might think. The ferry schedule is reduced during the off-season, although transportation options are still available.

The winter ferry schedules are more geared towards the needs of local residents rather than tourists. Most ferries depart from Hvar to Split in the morning and sail from Split to Hvar in the afternoon, making it impossible to visit Hvar from Split in a single day.

Hvar Town Main Square in April

The island and Hvar towns are quieter, offering a more peaceful and authentic experience. Remember that most activities and restaurants have limited hours or are closed during the off-season, so it’s best to check beforehand. However, the off-season can be a wonderful time to visit Hvar if you want to avoid crowds and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.

From mid-November to the end of March, Kapetan Luka is the only catamaran company that offers a somewhat decent, although limited, schedule for visiting Hvar from Split in a day. This service operates only on weekends (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). The ferry departs from Split at 10 a.m. and leaves Hvar at 2:30 p.m., giving you approximately 2:30 hours in Hvar Town. But honestly, there isn’t much to do in Hvar during the winter besides enjoying its natural beauty. Most businesses, hotels, attractions, and activities are closed. So perhaps even 2.30 hours in Hvar Town is sufficient.

Another option for visiting Hvar from Split on a day trip during the off-season is to take a car ferry from Split to Stari Grad. In winter, the car ferry departs daily from Split at 5.30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and returns to Split at 2.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m.

Visiting Hvar in winter by car is much better because it allows you to explore the entire island. You can enjoy Hvar’s beautiful beaches without the summer crowds. You can also explore attractions like the Stari Grad plains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, go for a wine tasting, and discover the charming interior of Hvar.

How to get from Split to Hvar?

There are four ways to reach Hvar from Split : car ferry, catamaran, speedboat transfer, and an organized tour.

The car ferry operates between Split and Stari Grad, making four trips daily in winter and seven trips daily in summer. The Jadrolinija company manages this ferry service, and the crossing usually takes around two hours. The ticket prices are 5.71€ per person in winter and 8.10€ per person in summer. For those traveling with a car, the cost is 34.24€ in winter and 45.77€ in summer.

Catamaran from Split to Hvar, TP Proversa

Catamarans connect Split with Hvar, Stari Grad, and Jelsa, with most heading to Hvar. Catamarans offer faster travel times and more frequent departures, particularly during summer. The journey typically ranges from 50 to 75 minutes, depending on the specific company and the destination on Hvar Island. Some catamarans include scheduled stops in Brac and Vis before reaching Hvar or Split, resulting in longer travel times. It’s advisable to check the schedule in advance. The cost of a one-way ticket is 20€ per person.

Speedboat transfers are the priciest but most comfortable mode of travel between Split and Hvar. They can be customized to suit individual preferences, which is particularly convenient during the off-peak winter season when ferry and catamaran services to the island are limited. However, the high cost of 500€ for a 4-person boat makes this option unaffordable for many travelers.

Organized group tours offer an alternative option for those planning a day trip to Hvar from Split. While they may be pricier than ferry or catamaran rides, they are still more affordable than private speedboat transfers, costing around 100€ per person. It’s worth noting that these tours are unavailable from mid-November to end-March, except on a request basis.

Things to do in Hvar in one day

Hvar offers visitors a wide range of activities and experiences on a day trip. You can explore the charming Old Town with its medieval streets, St. Stephen’s Square, the Arsenal and the oldest theater in Europe, the historic fortress Spanjola, and beautiful Venetian Loggia.

Hvar seaside promenade

For nature lovers, lovely beaches like Pakleni Islands, Pokonji Dol, Mekicevica, and Robinson Beach are easily accessible from Hvar Town and are perfect for swimming or sunbathing. Sea kayaking to some of these beaches is a great activity for outdoor enthusiasts.

And between the sightseeing, find time to feel the vibe of one of Hvar’s infamous beach clubs like Carpe Diem, Hula Hula, or Bonj Les Bains, or relax on the lovely terrace of the Backlane Craft Bar, where you can enjoy the best cocktails and get a taste of local Croatian craft beers. If you would rather relax over a scoop or two of yummy ice cream, Sweet Republic is the place to go!

Hvar from the sea

Tour one of Hvar’s wineries and sample indigenous grape varieties like Plavac Mali and Bogdanuša. Guided tours of the vineyards and cellars provide a glimpse of the wine-making process. Located close to Hvar, Luviji is a lesser-known but excellent boutique winery with vineyards across the slopes between Hvar and Milna. The winemaking family also operates a Luviji Rooftop restaurant with a rooftop terrace in the heart of Hvar’s historic old town where you can taste their organic wine.

Lastly, have a bite at Black Pepper or Dva Ribara before catching a boat back to Split. Black Pepper and Dva Ribara prepare yummy dishes using fresh local produce and have a lovely atmosphere.

Hvar offers something for everyone, so make sure to plan your day trip well and not miss out on any of its wonderful attractions. Whether you prefer the beach, exploring nature, sightseeing, or indulging in delicious food and drinks, Hvar has it all.

Hvar town in croatia on a one day trip from Split

If you have time to spare on your trip to Croatia , you should definitely take a day trip to Hvar from Split. And if you’re reading this blog post, chances are you’ve already had that thought! The good news is, since these two destinations are close and well-connected, you can do a Split to Hvar day trip easily.

My Hvar day trip from Split was one of the highlights of my trip to Croatia. I loved this Hvar so much that I actually visited it again on another day trip from Split just a few days later!

So, it’s safe to say I know a thing or two about how to take a day trip to Hvar from Split. After all, I’ve done it twice! Today, I’m going to share everything you need to know before you take a Hvar day trip, including how to get to Hvar from Split, what to do in Hvar, and how much everything will cost you.

Let’s dive in!

Top tip: As of 1 January 2023 the official money in Croatia  is now the Euro. All prices in this post are listed in Euros.

Is Hvar Worth Visiting?

Hvar is 100% worth visiting. I loved it so much that I actually returned for a second day trip, and plenty of other travellers I met did the same.

Known as the playground of the rich (and when you see all the super-yachts in Hvar Town’s port you’ll know what I mean), Hvar is a gorgeous island just 40km from Split that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Hvar is the place to kick back, relax and take it easy. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also drop-dead gorgeous!

There’s plenty to keep you occupied for one day in Hvar, but it’s worth pacing yourself. In summer, the heat in Hvar can be extreme, so slowing down your sightseeing is essential.

How to Get to Hvar From Split

There are two ways to get to Hvar from Split – by guided tour, or by ferry. I have done both! I’ll explain everything you need to know about both options so that you can decide what the best way to get to Hvar is for you.

Split to Hvar by Tour

I first visited Hvar on this 5 Island Tour from Split . I rave about this tour, because it’s the perfect way to check out the highlights of the Dalmatian Islands in just one day! During the tour, you spend around 3 hours on Hvar, which is perfect to get a taste for the island and see if you want to come back on a dedicated day trip.

I had an amazing time, and you can read my full review of the experience here . The 5 island tour is the perfect solution if you want to spend the day island hopping and visit Hvar as well as plenty of other awesome destinations.

Another option for a boat tour from Split is this Hvar, Brac and Pakleni boat tour , which includes lunch, a full day of catamaran sailing, and snorkelling stops!

Split to Hvar by Ferry

If you don’t want to join a tour, you’ll have to take the ferry from Split to get to Hvar. It’s possible to visit either Stari Grad or Hvar Town on the ferry from Split, but I highly recommend going to Hvar Town! This is the hub of the island, and it’s where you’ll find all the hippest beach hangouts.

What is the Best Ferry from Split to Hvar?

Three different ferry companies operate on the Split to Hvar route: Kapetan Luka , Jadrolinija and Krilo Shipping. The high-speed Kapetan Luka ferry is the one I went with, and it’s the one I recommend. The journey was smooth, everybody got a seat, and we arrived on time.

Kapetan Luka Jadrolinija have the most frequent ferry services, which means you can be a bit more flexible with your arrival and departure times. Krilo Shipping only runs a couple of journeys per day.

How Long is the Ferry from Split to Hvar?

Depending on which operator you choose, the ferry takes between 55 minutes and 1 hour and 40 minutes to make the journey from Split Port to Hvar Town on the island of Hvar. The majority of ferries on this route take around 1 hour 5 minutes.

How to Buy Ferry Tickets from Split to Hvar

As a pedestrian, simply arrive at the correct dock number at the port of Split around 30 minutes before departure. You can buy your tickets online, or just turn up at the ferry company’s ticket booth at the pier. As people begin to board you’ll have to get your ticket checked, and then you’re free to grab a seat!

You don’t need to buy a return ticket if you don’t know what time you want to come back to Split yet. There are ferry ticket kiosks at the port in Hvar where you can buy them.

In the middle of summer, you should ideally buy your tickets in advance as some ferries do fill up quickly.

What is the Split to Hvar Ferry Like?

Most of the Split to Hvar ferries have an indoor area on the first floor and an open-top area on the second floor. Get in line for the ferry as early as you can so you can snag fabulous seats overlooking the ocean on the top floor!

St Stephen's Square in one day in Hvar Croatia

How Much Does the Split to Hvar Ferry Cost?

The price of ferry tickets for the Split to Hvar route varies massively, costing between €8.50-20 each way. The price depends on which company you choose, how fast the journey is, and whether you’re travelling in the peak summer season or not.

Split to Hvar day trip things to do

Things to Do in One Day in Hvar

This one day in Hvar itinerary is based around Hvar Town (the most popular destination in Hvar). There’s enough to do here to fill an entire day and then some without needing a car or public transport.

If you’re looking to explore Hvar past Hvar Town, for example by visiting the town of Stari Grad, you really need to stay for at least one night.

So, let’s get started – here’s what to do in Hvar for a day! You can also follow this list as a one day in Hvar itinerary. You’re welcome 😉

Tvrdava Fortress

Looming high over the Hvar Town, you’ll have a long uphill trudge through the narrow streets of the old town to get to the Tvrdava Fortress. I promise, though, the views over the town, the surrounding Pakleni Islands and the glittering ocean are worth it.

Because it’s such a slog to get there, and summer temperatures in Hvar can soar to up to 31°C , go here as soon as you arrive in Hvar to beat the heat!

The fort was built in the early 16th century, when Hvar was under Venetian rule, and was reconstructed in 1579. Entry tickets cost €5 , but you can enjoy its grounds and the views for free.

The view from the Hvar Fortress on a day trip from Split to Hvar

I didn’t go into the fort itself because I didn’t fancy spending a whole €5 and was already dying from the heat. Instead, I sat in the shade for a while and rehydrated whilst the friends I travelled with went in to explore the fort. They said it was great, but they were only inside for about 20 minutes, so I felt pretty fine with my decision to save money.

Plus, it gave me way more time to snap photos of Hvar!

Hvar Old Town

Wandering back to town from the fortress, take your time and explore the quaint streets on your way down to Old Town Hvar.

Start your walking tour of Hvar back near the harbour, at the Venetian Loggia and Clock Tower. Here, you’ll marvel at these dazzling white buildings with the Tvrdava Fortress in the background!

Town Square things to do in Hvar in 1 day.

Then, wander in the direction of St Stephen’s Square, stopping every so often to gawp at just how gorgeous everything is, because you won’t be able to help yourself!

The buildings around here are to-die-for. Everything looks straight out of a holiday brochure – whitewashed buildings, clear blue skies and ancient cobblestoned streets. This is what we travel to Croatia for!

At the end of the square, you’ll find the Hvar Cathedral . It looks much more impressive outside than inside, so enjoy the view of its 17th-century bell tower outside for free.

Lunch at Hanibal

Right outside Hvar Cathedral you’ll find the outdoor seating of Hanibal restaurant. I ate here twice during my time in Hvar and was very impressed both times! They pride themselves on using fresh ingredients and you can really tell.

On the first day, I ordered a veggie pizza which was so fresh and light that I just couldn’t stop eating! On my second visit to Hvar I ordered their Greek salad. It was absolutely delicious, and just what I needed on such a hot day.

Where to eat in Hvar Croatia

The prices are unfortunately not on their online menu, and I can’t for the life of me remember what I paid, but I know that it wasn’t too expensive.

Sitting outside in the shade of the restaurant’s parasols, this is a great place to hide out during the hottest part of the day, watch the world go by and perhaps sample some Croatian wine.

Chilling at Pokonji Dol Beach

Strolling along the waterfront past the port, a 25-minute walk (which is lovely all by itself) will lead you to the deep-blue water and pebbled shore of Pokonji Dol Beach. This is probably the best beach within walking distance from Hvar Town.

Did you know Croatia’s beaches are pebble, not sand? At first, I was slightly disappointed, because it meant I had to fork out for a sun lounger for the afternoon, but this turned out to be one of my most pleasant surprises!

Lying on the fancy sun lounger by the water’s edge felt so luxurious, and I couldn’t help feeling like a celebrity, living a life of luxury.

Since I was suffering so much from the heat, I decided be extravagant and hire an umbrella too. You really should do this! I can’t imagine how burnt and dehydrated I would’ve been if I hadn’t had the shade from my umbrella. It was worth every penny.

Hvar Beaches are gorgeous!

Hiring a sunbed will set you back between €10-€13 for the day, and an umbrella will cost a little bit extra. Yeah, it’s not cheap, but let’s not forget that this is the Croatian island of the rich and famous!

The water here is so delicious and refreshing! Every half-hour or so I took a dip to cool off, and I just couldn’t get over how blue the water was! It looked like blue dye had been put in it, it was so vibrant!

Fancy something more active? Sure thing – the gorgeous Pakleni Islands are just a stone’s throw away. Join a Pakleni Islands Sailing Tour for the afternoon, or for even more activity, an Afternoon Kayaking Tour of the islands.

Hula Hula Beach Bar!

After you’ve chilled at the beach, it’s time to see what Hvar’s hip beach bar scene has to offer. You’ll struggle to find a more kick-ass location for a bar than Hula Hula!

Situated right on the oceanfront, Hula Hula is full of young travellers kicking back with a few drinks. You can come here at any time of day (they have huge sunbeds to sip your drinks on), and can kind of treat it as an extension of the beach, but with funky music and a bar nearby!

If you’re a fan of watching the sunset over the ocean (who isn’t?) you really have to stay here until the sun sets. The views are epic!

A word of warning about Hula Hula – it’s SO expensive for Croatia. And the service isn’t great.

Why do I recommend it, then?

Well, its location is amazing and the set up is so fun and cool. The other guests are all good fun, the music is great, and the food is just *chefs kiss*. You HAVE to order the Pljukanci (Croatian pasta) with truffles!

Traditional pasta on a day trip from Split to Hvar

Good lord, that meal was delicious.

It cost me a whopping €14.50 but, to my surprise, it was absolutely worth the splurge! Just keep in mind that the drinks are not cheap at all (especially for Croatia). At €6 for their cheapest bottle of beer I was glad we didn’t spend too long there.

After your meal and a drink or two it’ll probably be getting dark. Now is the perfect time to head back to the port to catch the ferry back to Split, and round off your Split to Hvar day trip.

On the ferry back try to get a seat in the indoor area as it’ll be chilly on the open deck. The ferry ride home is the perfect time to have a nap.

What to Pack on a Day Trip to Hvar from Split

Luckily, I’ve already written a comprehensive list of everything to bring to Croatia . Out of these items, there isn’t anything extra you’ll need to bring on your day trip to Hvar from Split. There are a few things you should pack to make your life easier, though.

Firstly, a portable charger is a necessity, since you’ll want to take so many photos.  I have one  like this , which holds about 7 phone recharges, recharges fast, and is surprisingly durable! In addition to this I pack a smaller one  like this for quick recharges on the go.

Hvar’s beaches pebble beaches, making walking around without shoes quite painful! For this reason, I recommend stashing a pair of  water shoes  in your bag.

A quick-dry towel like  this one is ideal for taking to the beach because it packs into a tiny ball and dries very fast. There’s nothing worse than a heavy, soggy towel in your bag!

Finally, pack a waterproof phone lanyard if you want to go into the ocean but are scared about leaving your stuff on the beach. The small, see-through case has enough space to hold your phone, money and keys, and clips so that it’s totally waterproof! I also love that the case is see through, so you can take selfies and videos underwater!

Sunbathing during one day in Hvar Croatia

For a more comprehensive list of what to pack for a day trip, check out my helpful post all about that here!

How Much Does a Day Trip to Hvar Cost?

If you’re following this itinerary and getting the ferry, €65 would be a good amount to budget for your day trip to Hvar from Split. This would be enough to cover your ferry tickets, a delicious lunch and dinner with a few drinks, and renting a sun lounger and umbrella.

If you brought your own packed lunch and dinner from Split and decide to sit on the pebbles on the beach rather than hiring a sun lounger, you could easily spend just €30 for your one day in Hvar. For this reason, it’s totally possible to visit Hvar on a budget.

Want to Extend Your Hvar Day Trip from Split?

Hvar Town Port, on the ferry route for day trips from Split to Hvar

If you have time to spend longer than one day in Hvar I really recommend staying overnight in Hvar Town! This was one of the biggest regrets from my Croatia trip as I’ve heard its nightlife is incredible.

For budget backpackers, I’ve heard great things about Hostel Villa Skansi (and its reviews speak for themselves!). Not only is it right in the centre of Hvar town, but they put a huge emphasis on being sociable, and run LOADS of events to get you mingling with your fellow travellers.

If you’re not travelling on a tight budget you can’t go wrong staying at Pharos Hvar Hotel . At €175 per night (for a double room) it’s definitely not cheap – but nowhere on Hvar is! What sweetens the deal is that an excellent breakfast is included in this rate and you’ll have access to their pool, which will save you from paying to hire sunbeds on the beach.

Other Places to Visit on Hvar

If you’re staying in Hvar for a second day you should get a taxi over to Stari Grad. This journey should cost you around €30 .

Stari Grad is another tourist hotspot on Hvar island with a quieter and more traditional vibe. Plus, it has direct ferry links with Split, so you can just catch the ferry from Stari Grad back to Split when you’re ready to leave Hvar and return to the mainland.

Hvar adventures beaches in 1 day

Did I convince you to take a day trip from Split to Hvar yet? I sure hope so! My time in Hvar was wonderful, and it left me wishing I had a couple of months to do some in-depth island hopping in Croatia. There are a tonne of day trip options from Split , but Hvar is one of my favourites.

For an introduction to the Dalmatian coast, though, Hvar is definitely the right place.

Good to know

What to bring.

  • Swimsuit & sunscreen
  • Beach towel
  • Warm clothes for early morning or late evening
  • Small amount of money in local currency (HRK)

Know before you go

The speedboat ride can get a bit bumpy at times.

As the speedboat ride can sometimes get a bit bumpy when the weather creates rougher sea conditions, the tour isn’t recommended for pregnant women or for those who have neck or back problems. You can be rest assured that the skipper will provide you with the smoothest ride possible.

WHAT TO BRING FOR THE BEST EXPERIENCE ON YOUR SPLIT TO HVAR DAY TRIP

You’ll be provided with a wind jacket in case it gets cool out on the water which can happen even during the summer, in the early morning hours as we depart and in the evening while making our return. The strong Mediterranean sun means you should bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat that stays well-secured so that it won’t blow off. You’ll also want a towel, a bathing suit, some extra clothes to change into in case what you’re wearing gets wet, and a camera for snapping shots of all the incredible scenery and wildlife. To avoid getting pricey electronic equipment wet, you may want to stow it in a “dry” bag. You’ll have opportunities to enjoy local foods and beverages on the trip, but you might want to bring some snacks to soothe any hunger pangs that might arise before we stop. Carry some cash (in kuna) too as some smaller, local restaurants may not accept credit cards.

PRECAUTIONS WHEN SNORKELLING

As we want you to have the safest and most enjoyable experience possible, it’s important to be extra-cautious when snorkelling as the sea surrounding the islands is so clear that depth often seems less than it really is. Please don’t overestimate yourself as it could put you in jeopardy – we want you to return home unharmed, happy and filled with joyful memories of your time here.

DOLPHIN WATCHING

There is a good chance that you’ll be able to see dolphins while you’re on this magical Croatian tour. The animals are well-known for their intelligence and curiosity, but they also have another characteristic that not many know about – they inhabit only the cleanest, most pristine waters, which is why groups of dolphins are often seen as we cruise around the islands through the crystal-clear sea that surrounds them. Be sure to keep a watchful eye out, although our skipper is especially good at spotting them. A short stop will be made so that everyone can enjoy the moment and time for capturing photos.

BRAC STONE AND WHY IT’S FAMOUS

As you’ll be visiting Brac, the island that’s become famous for its stone, you might want to know a bit more about it before you go. It’s been mined from the quarries here for centuries. The glistening white stone is indigenous to the island. It was used to build homes, grand Baroque and Renaissance palaces, and even ancient Roman palaces and some notable landmarks like the White House in Washington. Brac is also home to Croatia’s only stonemasonry school, where students who specialise in sculptures carve them from the local stone using traditional tools.

PLAN AHEAD TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME ON HVAR

As Hvar Island is one of the most popular in Croatia, and there is such a long list of things to see and do in Hvar’s old town as mentioned in our itinerary, we advise prioritizing the experiences you’d most like to enjoy. If you’d like to visit the most captivating historic sites and sample some of the delicious fare, it’s especially important to do a bit of planning ahead.

WINE TASTING

The cultivation of grapes and winemaking in Croatia began with the Illyrians followed by the Greeks. In fact, the country hosts the world’s oldest continuously planted vineyard, located on the southern slopes of Hvar Island which has been planted with wine grapes for over 2,400 years. Many wine enthusiasts join our tours – if that’s you, you should know that some of the most popular wines to try when the opportunity arises. Pošip is a white wine with an intense flavour and aroma, think figs and dried apricots. It’s elegant and well-balanced with a specific character that reflects its native terroirs. Plavac Mali is one of Croatia’s most well-known wines – plavac means ‘blue’ and mali means ‘small’ which aptly describes the small blue grapes on the vine. It’s a rich, robust red that packs a powerful punch, high in tannins and alcohol.

BOOK IN ADVANCE, ESPECIALLY IN THE HIGH SEASON

To avoid disappointment, be sure to book your unforgettable Hvar, Brac and Paklinski islands tour at least a few days in advance as there is limited availability. In the high season, this popular tour may be booked a week or more prior to the departure date which means it’s always best to secure your spot as soon as possible.

SAFETY NEED-TO-KNOW

As mentioned, your safety and satisfaction are a top priority. We are fully insured, and all our boats come equipped with the latest safety equipment, enough for every individual passenger. Each boat is thoroughly cleaned every morning to ensure the comfort of all passengers as well.

Five star

Simple and efficient booking process with Happy To Visit. Quick confirmation and good customer service. Reminder message the night before confirming pick up time and place was a nice touch. Early start but well worth it, what a fabulous day out. Mayer Charter Hosts were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. Beautiful islands with plenty of time to explore, swim or eat. Blue Cave unfortunately closed due to tide levels (Mother Nature for you!) but guides adjusted times elsewhere to make the most of our day. Bit disappointed in Green Caves (for the cost) but if this goes toward conservation and protection of the gorgeous clean waters then money well spent. Hvar on the other hand was stunning, and the hike up to the castle is well worth the views from the top. The open water ride out and back was extremely rough due to the wind & waves, but handled expertly by Anthony. Felt completely at ease and safe in his hands. Top tip for the ladies though, wear a sports bra..,a bikini just doesn’t cut-it bumping over the waves!! 🤣 A fun filled day trip which I’d highly recommend, thank you Mayer Charter and Happy to Visit 💯👍

It was a lovely trip, we had the chance to visit the places without much crowd given that the previous day it rained. The guides were very kind and showed us a lot of exciting places. They made a pre-reservation to a restaurant in case you wanted to have lunch there. We did not know about this and for this reason, we prepared our own lunch. It would have been great if we had known this beforehand given that the restaurant looked really nice. They give you enough time to visit and take pictures of every destination. They also help you all the time to get in and out of the boat. The trip was at some times a bit abrupt because there were big waves. This was a bit scary sometimes. But the guides knew how to minimize the impact and we felt safe almost all the time.

Nice Crew and fantastic journey

This was really good fun trip and the boat ride out was great fun. Our guides (I'm sure the lad said his nickname was Milky?! 🤣) made the day interesting and my wife loved seeing where mama Mia was filmed! If I'm honest, I thought the blue cave itself was a huge disappointment and doesn't live up at all to the hype but there's nothing you guys can do about that and I'd give the crew & the trip 5 stars for making it a fun day and it's worth it for the speed boat ride alone

Our reader Lotta enjoyed the small winding roads beyond Siena, Tuscany.

‘Ahead lay cypress-lined Tuscan roads waiting to be discovered’: readers’ best road trips

Our tipsters navigate Alpine passes, serene backcountry and dramatic coastlines across Europe, stopping off for the odd hike, cycle or dip in the sea

Slow roads in Tuscany’s sunny back country

Driving through the Tuscan hills, the sun beginning its slow descent in the hazy, glowing heat on an August evening was one of the most exquisite experiences I have ever had. Travelling slowly along small, winding roads near Siena in our old Polo, we settled in to the rhythm the locals live by. The peaceful embrace of the Tuscan way of life was felt at every turn, with every smile we saw and every vineyard we gazed across. The cypress trees lining other, yet-to-be-discovered roads in the distance added to our awe at our surroundings. Lotta

Riding the flats and peaks of Slovenia

Piran.

A week in western Slovenia offers everything you could want from a European road trip – breathtaking mountain views, easy hops between stops and, maybe most importantly, scenic but well-maintained roads. Pick up a car in Ljubljana, head north to the lakes of Bled and Bohinj, then wind slowly south, via the vinicultural Vipava valley, to the caves and cliffside castles of Postojna . Finally, end your trip in the coastal town of Piran for an open-air spa day on the salt flats of the Sečovlje Salina nature park , and a view of the glittering Adriatic sea, with a glass of Slovenian wine in hand. Hairpin bends from Como to Constance

The Splügen Pass.

My trip by motorcycle from Lake Como in Italy to Lake Constance (Bodensee) in Germany over the wonderfully twisty Splügen Pass was fantastic. Setting off in bright sunlight with the scent of wisteria in the air, up and over the pass with its road signs beginning with Tornante (hairpin bend) moving on to Due tornanti (two hairpin bends) and finally warning you of M olti Tornanti as the winding road up the steep mountainside comes fearfully into view. Down into Switzerland along sweeping curves, through the micro state of Liechtenstein in just 30 minutes or so, clipping a corner of Austria and on into Germany. A late afternoon arrival in Immenstaad on the shores of Lake Constance and an opportunity to sample the local wine in celebration of a great bike ride was perfection. Five countries in five hours. A true story from the Troodos mountains, Cyprus

Landscape of Cyprus with cars vehicles riding asphalt road in valley with yellow dry fields, cypress trees and roadside poles,

In Cyprus’s Troodos mountains, after driving on the scary mountain roads, we ran out of petrol in the middle of a village on a Sunday morning. The villagers knocked on doors to wake up the man who operated the petrol pump, while we were served cheese snacks and black coffees. They wouldn’t accept our offers of money, so we bought literally all of their tomatoes! Piled into the back I remember tears of laughter as to what we were going to do with them all. Best trip ever. Zoe

On a roll in Bosnia-Herzegovina

The Ćiro Trail uses former railway lines.

After navigating the Montenegrin coastal roads, we decided to cycle inland into mountainous Bosnia-Herzegovina. After a border crossing at almost 1,000 metres above sea level, we descended into a beautiful country with wide plains and empty roads. Enjoying a section of the Ćiro Trail , a former railway route converted into a bicycle path – we enjoyed the spectacular 100-mile journey on the mountain-hugging paved roads into Mostar. The nine-day road trip through Bosnia-Herzegovina was memorable – a juxtaposition of beauty and war – a diverse landscape dotted with a scarred past evident with its landmine signs, gun-shelled houses and verdant valleys. Alpine highs on a circular trip from Munich

The Aqua Dome in Austria’s Ötztal valley

After a day’s sightseeing in Munich we headed south to Ötztal in Austria. Here we stayed at Hotel Stern for the night then hiked up to Farst at 1,450 metres to take in the views. After that we relaxed at Aqua Dome , floating in its heavenly outdoor pools as the moon peeked behind the mountains. On the next leg, we took the Timmelsjoch high alpine road (May-Oct) and crossed into Italy at nearly 2,500 metres, staying overnight at Albergo Hochfirst , high in the mountains with stunning views. The following day we headed west and entered Switzerland in Müstair , admiring the wonderful Unesco-listed Benedictine Abbey of St John. At Davos, 50 miles further west, we took the Schatzalpbahn funicular railway to 1,800 metres and enjoyed a breathtaking panorama and an invigorating walk. Then we drove along the shores of Walensee and Zürichsee into Zurich, where we visited museums and strolled around taking in Swiss culture, history and architecture. Our final stop before heading back to Munich was at Lindau on Lake Constance, where we sat in a quaint beer garden under chestnut trees, gazing at the soaring Alps on the other side of the lake. Rivers and waterfalls, Zagreb to Dubrovnik

Plitvice Lakes was among Sophie’s stops on the way to Dubrovnik.

Our road trip started in Zagreb, which is great value and still has amazing foodie finds. Our next port of call was the stunning Plitvice Lakes national park, with its waterfalls and forests, before a beautiful 120-mile stretch of road to Skradin, a hidden sailing town gem, and a perfect base for heading out to Krka national park to enjoy more rivers and waterfalls. Next up was Split, where we took in views of the old town from the 12th-century bell tower of St Domnius Cathedral. We also took a relaxing boat trip to Hvar from Split. Back in the hire car we headed 150 miles south to crowded but utterly beautiful Dubrovnik – also a great place for eating out. Sophie

A precipitous drive in Provence

La Garde-Freinet.

La Garde-Freinet is a well-preserved medieval village with a fascinating history about 10 miles inland from Saint-Tropez. The hairy roads and mountainous terrain have helped the area avoid the tourist saturation of the coast. When I was a teenager, we drove these mountain roads, eyeing the beautiful scenery and trusting my parents’ driving ability to navigate cliff edges and dust tracks. The village is absolutely worth the edgy drive. The beautiful stone houses, the deep chestnut and cork forests and the distant outline of the Alpes-Maritimes will capture any heart. Sarah

South of Naples on the road to Aspromonte

Capo Vaticano.

An Italian ice-cream seller told me a less crowded, equally spectacular road trip alternative to the Amalfi coast last summer: the evocatively named Violet Coast road in Calabria. Inspired by his praise, we headed south 260 miles from Naples in our camper – to the Capo Vaticano peninsula on a road of dramatic cliffs on one side tumbling down to soft sandy beaches and sensual cerulean sunsets on the other. I had to concentrate on keeping my eyes on the road so I stopped at the town of Tropea for an energising coffee. I carried on along narrow streets zigzagging their way past ancient castles and villas with the mountains of the Aspromonte national park in the distance until another break at the pretty village of Pizzo. More coffee and a view of the volcanoes of Stromboli (from Tropea) and Etna (from Lazzaro) drew me ever farther south before heading back to Naples via Siderno and Catanzaro. Will

Winning tip: A change of gear, Roscoff to San Sebastián

San Sebastián.

As one of a group of surfers I took the ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff and drove down the west coast of France to San Sebastián, just over the Spanish border, stopping along the way to surf the amazing breaks and eat some fantastic food. Highlights include the awe-inspiring Dune du Pilat (Europe’s biggest sand dune), eating fresh moules-frites by the port in Hossegor , and chipirons à la plancha (tiny fried squid from the Basque region) with a cold beer watching the sun go down in Guéthary . San Sebastián proved as wonderful as its reputation suggested: a beautiful city full of more gastronomic and architectural delights. Sarah D The last tip was amended on 26 April 2024. The ferry was from Plymouth to Roscoff, not Saint-Malo, as a previous version said.
