Star Trek star says Strange New Worlds changes Spock in one major way

Does the most fun Star Trek in years contain the funniest Spock?

spock star trek new worlds

Spock is not the comic relief in the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , but somehow, he’s hilarious. This isn’t a break with canon, to be clear. From Leonard Nimoy in The Original Series to Zachary Quinto in the reboot films, and now Ethan Peck, Spock has often brought the laughs, even if by accident.

But why is Spock — the Sherlockian paragon of logic and emotional control — so hilarious? Ahead of the May 5 launch of Strange New Worlds on Paramount+, Inverse caught up with Ethan Peck to figure out why Spock and humor are a totally logical combination.

When asked why Spock seems funny so often, Ethan Peck tells Inverse , “I mean, he’s such a weirdo. Like such a strange guy. And earnest. He doesn’t understand — or seems not to understand, comedic timing. But, as the actor, I hope that I do understand comedic timing and can maneuver him in these situations in ways that are amusing.”

“He’s such a weirdo .”

Although Peck is the third actor to take over the role of Spock full time, he’s also been playing the character since 2019 in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, during which time Spock was emotionally disturbed, arguing with his human stepsister Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and rocking an angsty beard.

In Strange New Worlds , Spock has ditched the beard but not the repressed Vulcan emotional baggage. For Peck, time has given him a chance to become more familiar than he was a few years back.

“This thing that is being Spock, and Star Trek being in my life, the onus of that has become less uncomfortable,” Peck says. “And that just gives me more freedom to explore and experiment. While we're filming, I just feel much more license to try things out. I think I have a much greater familiarity with what I believe the character to be.”

Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Spock (Ethan Peck) in the transporter room of the Enterprise .

But who is Spock at this point in the Star Trek timeline? Somewhat infamously, Spock’s behavior in the first pilot for The Original Series , “The Cage,” included him shouting and even smiling. In the rest of The Original Series , Spock was much more stoic, constantly repressing his emotions.

“We’re finding out more and more about him.”

Because Strange New Worlds is set before The Original Series , but after “The Cage” and Discovery Season 2, fans should expect to see a new side of Spock in a time of his life we’ve never glimpsed before. If you think you know the whole story of Spock, think again.

“I think that we're finding out more and more about him, which is so essential,” Peck explains, while also noting there’s a lot of humor and fun in that expanding story.

“We can put him in these scenarios and make him say something that he shouldn't be saying or something that he doesn't want to be saying, or doing something he doesn't want to be doing. And it can be pretty hilarious,” Peck says. “Just because he's this very serious, rational, focused person doesn't mean that we can have a lot of fun with him.”

Ethan Peck on the 'beautiful burden' of playing Spock in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

The Strange New Worlds star still feels pressure, but it's different pressure now.

Ethan Peck as Spock in STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS

There's a legacy within  Star Trek  that everyone who works on it now has to carry, a sense of weight that comes from the beloved sci-fi series being part of American pop culture for nearly 60 years now. That weight gets heavier, though, if you're tasked with playing one of the iconic characters who debuted along with the franchise back in 1966. Just ask Ethan Peck , who's taking on whole new dimensions of Spock as part of the new series  Strange New Worlds .

Peck first began playing Spock as a guest star on  Star Trek: Discovery  back in 2019, embodying a prequel version of the character that Leonard Nimoy first introduced in The Original Series  and becoming the third actor to play the half-Vulcan science officer in live action. From the beginning, there was pressure to get it right, but speaking to  The Hollywood Reporter about his time on  Strange New Worlds , Peck explained that the pressure has shifted somewhat now that he's had more time to settle into the character.

"In the beginning, yes, the weight was nearly unbearable, and I wondered if I would be kind of broken by, 'I’m not sure that I quite feel worthy.' I’m still growing into Spock in many ways. And you know, now the pressure isn’t quite as great as it was during  Discovery ," Peck said.

"I’m trying to have an experience as Spock. I’m not thinking of what the final product will be or how it will look. But I definitely did a bunch of research, and I’m constantly checking in with the voice of Spock in my head. Leonard Nimoy made such an impression on me and that’s with me always. I’m constantly checking in with that."

Peck continued: "Celia [Rose Gooding, who plays Uhura ] and I maybe have added pressure because of the characters we’re playing, but at the same time, I think  Star Trek  is such a beautiful burden for all of us and a heavy one, too. It represents something so special to so many people. It’s hopeful and aspirational and inspiring and curious and accepting. And I think it’s always anecdotal to all of the important things that are happening in the world."

Peck's ability to spend more time with Spock — and with co-stars Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn — has obviously changed his experience with the character, but the format of  Strange New Worlds  also lends itself to a new way of doing things. Like  The Original Series,  Strange New Worlds  takes a very episodic format, offering new planets and new adventures for the crew every single week. That means Peck never knows exactly what he's going to get, which keeps him, and Spock, on his toes.

"It’s obvious we are in an episodic format, so each episode is its own adventure, its own world, its own conflict to be overcome by the bridge crew of the Enterprise," Peck said. "The challenges are new every single time, and that’s exciting for me as an actor because I don’t know what’s coming up. Oftentimes, at the beginning of the season of a serialized show, you kind of get an idea of what your character will be going through. And in this case, it’s kind of a surprise where Spock is going. That’s really thrilling."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds  airs Thursdays on Paramount+.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 Episode 5 Recap: Spock Gets a Fascinating Lesson in Humanity

A shuttle accident and an encounter with a strange alien life form turn Spock completely human ahead of an important dinner.

Spock has been one of the most beloved Star Trek characters since the franchise first hit the air back in 1966. The latest episode of Strange New Worlds sees Spock's Vulcan DNA temporarily removed, leaving him completely human ahead of an important dinner with his fiancé T'Pring ( Gia Sandhu ) and her parents. In addition to exploring Spock's human side — which truly allows Ethan Peck to flex his comedy skills — the episode also finally addresses the romantic feelings simmering between Spock and Nurse Christine Chapel ( Jess Bush ).

Written by Kathryn Lyn and co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers , "Charades" is a hilarious and heartfelt romp that delivers a unique look at why love for Spock is such an enduring part of this franchise. The episode also brings back Mia Kirshner , who plays Spock's mother Amanda Grayson with an incredibly soft strength as we get a closer look at the deep connection between her and her son. For those excitedly waiting to learn about the ties between Amanda and Pelia, we'll have to wait a little long as Carol Kane isn't in this episode — she does send her regards, despite being away, indicating that the show certainly hasn't forgotten about that bit of information from the season premiere .

"Charades" does a beautiful job of exploring an oft-undervalued part of Spock's identity without devaluing his Vulcan side. While the Vulcan culture can be as harsh and unforgiving as T'Pring's mother, T'Pril ( Ellora Patnaik ), at times, it's still an essential part of who Spock is — one that Chapel risks her own life to restore despite getting the emotional honesty she longs for from human Spock. Spock is both human and Vulcan, and "Charades" teaches him how to see that neither of those identities should be taken for granted.

Awkward Tensions Rise Between Spock and Nurse Chapel

Continuing Season 2's trend of spotlighting Strange New Worlds ' incredible ensemble cast, "Charades" opens with a personal log from Christine Chapel. She's en route to the Vulcan system to survey an ancient moon where a civilization once lived before it vanished entirely. There's a strange anomaly nearby that she's hoping will give them answers about the lost alien race – Chapel has a deep love for otherworldly anthropology, and it was mentioned earlier this season that she's planning to apply for an archaeological medicine fellowship on Vulcan that would take her away from the ship for a few months. Pike has decided to survey the moon at impulse speed, essentially giving the crew shore leave without the shore.

Chapel is using her free time to prepare her application by studying with all of her friends, from quizzing herself with M'Benga ( Babs Olusanmokun ), to answering questions while sparring with Uhura ( Celia Rose Gooding ), and playing drinking games with Ortegas ( Melissa Navia ) and La'an ( Christina Chong ). La'an points out that since her interview for the position is with a Vulcan, she should probably be practicing with Spock, but Ortegas explains that things are "weird" between the two of them. Since their impromptu kiss during Season 1's hostage episode , the awkward tension between Spock and Chapel has been almost unbearable, and nearly everyone on the ship has taken note of it.

Meanwhile, Spock has managed to fully suppress his emotions again thanks to therapeutic advice and methods from Doctor M'Benga, and without the distraction of his personal feelings, he's been able to take up new hobbies — like cooking with Captain Pike ( Anson Mount ) . During their latest lesson, Spock explains that he uses nasal suppressants because Vulcans have unusually strong senses, though Pike assures his second officer that he's missing out. Spock is also grateful to be able to suppress his emotions enough not to lash out at annoyances from his fellow officers and to get back to what he considers a normal level of camaraderie with his friends among the crew.

Later, Spock gets a subspace call from T'Pring, with whom he's looking forward to reuniting once they get to Vulcan. Because Spock is half-human, T'Prings's parents — particularly her mother — have qualms about their engagement. To satisfy her mother who insists upon strict adherence to tradition and protocol, T'Pring has scheduled a ceremonial dinner between their two families for when Spock arrives. Spock thinks that it's too soon to have the dinner given that he's not speaking to his father, but T'Pring appears to be at her wits end trying to keep her mother from sabotaging their relationship entirely.

Spock is nervous about the upcoming event, but he brushes it aside so that he can focus on his duties, which turns out to be essential as he's paired up with Chapel in the shuttle mission to scan the anomaly around the moon. Things are still awkward between them, but when Christine points out the tension, Spock pretends he hasn't noticed. They move past it to theorize about what happened to the civilization that disappeared from the moon — their scans pick up a unique energy signature and realize that it's a rupture in space-time which promptly starts to pull their shuttle inside. The two of them lock eyes as they crash directly into the rupture and everything goes white before Spock wakes to find Chapel, M'Benga, and Pike all staring at him in Sickbay. Despite the shuttle accident, they were both healed and returned safely to the Enterprise, however, whoever healed them removed Spock's Vulcan DNA making him entirely human.

'Strange New Worlds' Season 2 Introduces a New Alien Species

Una ( Rebecca Romijn ) and La'an examine the crashed shuttle which appears to have been repaired and deep cleaned when they find a calling card for an alien race they're unfamiliar with. Uhura discovers that they can make a subspace call to the species that left the card, and Pike and Una are practically giddy at the chance to make a new alien first contact. When Uhura pulls up the visuals on the viewscreen, the crew is greeted by a nebulous being that refers to herself as Yellow — she says she's of Kerkhov, the alien civilization that once inhabited the moon they were surveying when Spock and Chapel's shuttle crashed. She tells Pike that remediation has been made per her people's laws and that no further contact is necessary. Quite bluntly she tells the captain that the "beings" contained mixed instructions, but now they match, and because they're both alive Yellow doesn't see any reason that they should continue speaking, and she ends the subspace call. Uhura can't get the call back and Spock is seemingly stuck in his human body.

In sickbay, Spock goes through an incredible emotional rollercoaster from anger to hunger to gratitude that M'Benga is working on finding a way to restore Spock's Vulcan DNA. Pike reminds Spock of his upcoming commitment dinner with T'Pring and her family, and he immediately overreacts, a rarity for Spock, explaining that T'Pring's mother hates him, and she can't know that this has happened. Pike tells him that he informed T'Pring and Amanda that Spock was in an accident, and he's still recovering, and they've simply agreed to postpone the dinner.

Because nothing is technically wrong with Spock, he decides that he'll return to his regular duties, though Pike advises him to take it easy. The episode then takes Spock through a delightful montage as he laughs uncontrollably with friends in the ship's bar, becomes obsessed with bacon during a cooking lesson, and snaps at Sam Kirk ( Dan Jeannotte ) over leaving his breakfast dishes on the conference table during a briefing. Afterward, Spock chats with La'an about the range of emotions that he's going through, and she notes that it sounds like he's experiencing something similar to human puberty. After an awkward moment, she advises him to work on impulse control.

Back in sickbay, Chapel is blaming herself for Spock's current condition and works around the clock to figure out how to restore his Vulcan half. She's worked so long that she realizes she's late for her interview for the archeology fellowship — upon her arrival, she's immediately disappointed as the Vulcan reviewing her application doesn't seem to care about any of the discoveries she's made and dismisses her for taking a unique approach to science and medicine. When she runs into Spock in the hallway later he notices that she's upset and asks what happened. Because he's fully human he doesn't really have the filter he normally would, and he tells her that "Vulcans can be such jerks" and awkwardly offers her a hug. She's grateful for the rare emotional vulnerability from him, but before they can discuss things any further they're interrupted by the news that Spock's mother is beaming aboard.

When Spock arrives to greet Amanda in the transporter room, he's wearing a beanie to hide the fact that his ears are no longer pointy. She thinks it's silly, but the important thing is that she's here to tell him that they can't keep postponing the dinner because T'Pring's mother is threatening to end their engagement. Spock can't suppress his emotional reaction, despite his best efforts, and he has an outburst in front of Amanda. She immediately clocks what's going on and realizes they've got a lot of work to do and very little time to do it in as the dinner with T'Pring's family is now scheduled for the next day aboard the Enterprise. In Pike's quarters, Spock desperately tries to get out of the event entirely, but Amanda explains that to do so, or to reveal that Spock is human, would essentially ostracize T'Pring from upstanding Vulcan society. She decides that it's time to teach Spock about his human side — namely, how to lie.

Spock Learns Lessons in Both Humanity and Vulcan Tradition

M'Benga crafts synthetic earpieces for Spock to wear during the dinner, while Amanda sets about teaching Spock how to be the best Vulcan he can be during their dinner, following all the traditions and rituals that will garner him some good faith with T'Pring's mother. During their lessons, Spock gains a tremendous amount of respect for his mother as she shows him how she's learned to be strong for him. In a hilarious montage that mirrors the series of scenes from earlier in the episode, Spock gets lessons in how to "look more Vulcan" with the help of the crew. His friends teach him how to hold his face and how to not show his immediate emotional reactions. Peck leans hard into the absurdity of the situation, playing Spock with big emotions and adolescent outbursts that only make him more endearing.

Despite the best efforts of both Amanda and the crew, it appears that they won't be able to convincingly pull off a fake mind-meld for the dinner — the most important step in the event. Unfortunately for Spock, Chapel is not only struggling to find a way to heal him, but she's discovered that if she can't change him back soon he's going to be stuck this way forever. In a last-ditch effort to do everything she can to make Spock "whole" again, Chapel asks Ortegas and Uhura to accompany her back to the anomaly to make contact with the Kerkhovians to get a cure.

When T'Pring arrives on board she throws Spock for a loop when she immediately throws protocol out the window, explaining that she's had quite enough of it from her mother. Amanda takes some weight off of her daughter-in-law-to-be's shoulders and offers to greet T'Pring's parents on her behalf, allowing her and Spock to have a moment alone together before the dinner begins. She explains her conflict with her mother, and while it seems like he wanted to tell her, he decides that it would be more difficult for her to have to lie to her mother and keeps the fact that he's human hidden from her too.

The dinner takes place in Captain Pike's quarters with him essentially serving as a pseudo-father figure in place of Sarek . T'Pring's mother comes in with the worst vibes imaginable, somehow finding a way to insult everything about everyone, despite T'Pring's father seemingly being excited to try the food and enjoy the evening with Spock's family. Her complete disdain for humans is on full display as she doesn't hesitate to make Amanda feel less than and turns her nose up at Pike's phenomenal take on traditional Vulcan foods.

Meanwhile, back at the anomaly, Chapel, Uhura, and Ortegas realize that they might be able to fly through the anomaly to reach the other side and contact the aliens. Despite the risks they decide it's worth it, and Ortegas gets to flex her piloting skills. Once they're through the anomaly, they find themselves in interdimensional space with the shuttle nowhere to be found, and no space suits required. They're greeted by another nebulous being who calls herself Blue, Chapel explains that they need their help because they didn't "remediate" Spock correctly. She makes a desperate plea, but the being finds it strange that they're making a complaint outside "the response period."

Spock fights to make it through the rituals, doing a commendable job with the support of T'Pring and Amanda. After keeping a straight face through the tea ceremony, in which he must hold a scalding pot with his bare hands, Spock and T'Pring must listen to critiques from their future in-laws. Amanda tells T'Pring that she could visit more often and have more self-confidence — T'Pril is dissatisfied claiming that Amanda going too easy on her daughter because of her human instincts. She promptly tells Spock that he's a complete disappointment for abandoning Vulcan society for Starfleet, that Sarek is correct to shut him out, and he's unworthy of their daughter. Spock valiantly makes it through without responding emotionally but excuses himself to let out the tension. M'Benga tells him via communicator that Christine has gone to find the cure.

Back inside the anomaly, Yellow explains that "friends" don't have enough connection to each other to justify a complaint in their society. The whole setup is a little ridiculous, in a fun and lighthearted way, as Chapel is pushed to confess her feelings for Spock in order to save him. Yellow deduces that they're each other's caregivers and reveals that during the accident, Spock diverted the shields to her side of the shuttle to protect her. Uhura and Ortegas make it clear that if Christine doesn't sort out her feelings for him now she'll never be able to save Spock. She tells Yellow about their relationship, and while she's been grateful that the way they "fixed" him allowed him to understand her better, she misses the other part of him. Spock has always been a child of two worlds ; his human and Vulcan sides are essential to his very being.

On the ship, Pike attempts to stall ahead of the mind-meld by adding an Earth tradition to the ceremony with a round of charades. T'Pril is not convinced, but it works long enough for Chapel to beam back aboard and arrive with the cure. She and Spock are able to take a moment away under the guise that she's treating his injuries. Spock is delighted that she's returned, and she takes the moment to ask him why he decided to save her during the accident. He explains that it was only logical, despite his complicated feelings. Before he can say anything else, she gives him the cure and walks away.

Spock Learns to Be Proud of His Human Heritage

With his Vulcan DNA restored, Spock is able to perform the mind-meld with Amanda, and reveals that she showed him a memory from his childhood when she took him to school on Vulcan. While T'Pril is ready to criticize, T'Pring speaks up and tells her mother that they've completed the rituals as required. Despite this, she still insists on delivering backhanded compliments to Spock, saying that she's impressed he got through the dinner given his "human handicap." Spock decides to reveal that he's been human this entire time in defense of his mother, calling her resilient, compassionate, and strong for having withstood judgment from Vulcans like T'Pril for him for his entire life.

Despite his impassioned speech, T'Pring is hurt that he would hide something so big from her. Spock explains that he didn't want her to have to lie for him, but she feels like he doesn't see her as an equal partner because he involved his crewmates in the ruse but didn't trust her with the same. She decides that, for now, they should take some time apart. As much as the connection between Spock and Chapel is new and exciting to explore, we can't help but sympathize with T'Pring, who's done nothing but try to meet Spock halfway over and over.

When Chapel gets another call from the Vulcan fellowship, letting her know she can apply again at another time, she turns the situation on its head, as she flexes about her encounter with the Kerkhovians. Meanwhile, as Spock says goodbye to his mother, he asks her why she chose the memory she picked for the ceremony. She tells him that it was the first time she noticed that he felt accepted, and he reciprocates by telling her how seeing through her eyes has enlightened him about all the ways that she's been excluded because of Vulcan culture. Before she beams away, she imparts some wisdom that allows him to better understand Christine, as "it's not easy to be a human who loves a Vulcan."

Later, Spock is pacing in his quarters when Christine arrives, and he explains that he was just on his way to see her too. Inside, he reveals that he and T'Pring are taking time apart and while he feels bad for hurting T'Pring, the break was necessary because he has feelings for someone else. He reveals that he doesn't want to suppress his feelings for Christine any longer, and she finally decides to kiss him. While they both don't know what to make of their attraction to each other, they agree not to think too hard about it and just let themselves feel it for once.

Who Plays Spock On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

Spock speaking

The character of Spock has been a fundamental aspect of the "Star Trek" franchise ever since it began. The character, a half-human half-Vulcan member of Starfleet, first made his appearance on "Star Trek: The Original Series," where he was played by Leonard Nimoy, who went on to reprise the character on both "Star Trek: The Animated Series" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation," as well as in eight feature films.

Nimoy, however, is not the only performer to play the character, with Zachary Quinto having stepped into the role in the 2009 film "Star Trek." When the Paramount+ TV series "Star Trek: Discovery" announced that Spock would be joining the show, many fans wondered who the newest performer to take on the role would be.

Following Season 3 of that series, Spock, along with Christopher Pike (Anson Mount)  and Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) , ultimately transitioned from "Star Trek: Discovery" to "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," which focuses on the travels of the USS Enterprise in a prequel to "Star Trek: The Original Series." This is who plays Spock in the series.

Ethan Peck already has a number of major credits to his name

Spock is played by Ethan Peck on "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." Peck began acting when he was a child, getting his first on-screen credit at the age of 9 when he appeared in the ABC procedural series "Charlie Grace" alongside Mark Harmon. He also appeared on "The Drew Carey Show" and "That '70s Show," playing a young Kelso in the latter, a role he has since spoken about as being a formative experience for him. Peck's first prominent movie role came in the 2008 film "Tennessee," in which he stars as Ellis, one-half of a pair of brothers who go on a trip to try to find their estranged father, alongside Adam Rothenberg, Mariah Carey, and Lance Reddick.

Peck's first leading role on television came in 2009, on the ABC Family series "10 Things I Hate About You," based on the 1999 film. Peck plays Patrick Verona, the role played by Heath Ledger in the film, starring alongside Lindsey Shaw and Meaghan Martin. The series ran for a 20-episode first season before getting canceled, but Peck's career continued to grow, with the actor appearing on the big screen in films such as "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" alongside Nicolas Cage, "In Time" alongside Justin Timberlake, and "The Midnight Sky," alongside George Clooney.

Strange New Worlds

‘Strange New Worlds’ Is Most-Watched Paramount+ Star Trek Original Debut; CEO Says Franchise “Just Getting Started”

the visuals though, i’m diggin it!

THAT was awesome. Now watch it again as a perfume commercial! :) “I am, quite simply, Spock . “

Genius. :-)

My god, that’s brilliant

It’s scary how well that works…

I suspected it before, but now I am certain. They are embracing and incorporating the TOS style and visuals as much as possible and I think they are doing a fantastic job!

That final line, “I am, quite simply, Spock” sounds as if it was delivered by Nimoy himself. Ethan Peck nails it.

I loved him on DSC *because* he wasn’t trying to mimic Nimoy (same for Quinto) — and it seems here he’s really growing into the role and becoming more like the Spock we’ve always known and loved, while still retaining his own charms.

There are moments when he sounds just like Nimoy so that’s cool.

The kissing scene is so NOT who Spock was at that point in his life though so…that’s unfortunate. If that’s anything more than some kind of space drunk one-off it will undercut so much of the character in TOS : |

Spock was far more emotional in the Cage.

Also, kissing is not an emotion. We know Vulcans feel affection for their partners, even emotions (Sarek said so) and Spock may simply be expressing that physically. You know, which is the point of a kiss.

I don’t see him passionately embracing, just giving a kiss.

True re: smiley spock in the cage. But think back to the Naked Time when he was so clearly repressed. Of course it’s an action we’re seeing in the trailer, but the emotion behind such a thing is something I don’t think TOS era Spock would ever dare to allow himself.

Sometimes it seems people take what we saw in the pilot and very early TOS episodes too seriously. The Spock character then was not fleshed out. No one really knew what exactly was the deal with Spock.

At any rate, this supposedly takes place well after the events of The Cage and Spock should be more comfortable in his skin by this point. As evidenced in that promo.

Also… Is it me or are we going to get Spock going through Pon Far again?

I agree. The Spock we saw in “The Cage” was back when Roddenberry had pegged Number One as the “emotionless” one; with the second pilot, that characteristic was assigned to Vulcans instead. That early stuff wasn’t character development; it was production bobbles.

And I believe that Nimoy himself had revealed that smile in the pilot was suggested to him by the director. He went along because that was not a part of the Spock character yet.

Well, the traditional definition of what constitutes ’canon’ in this franchise has been what appears on film, as opposed to books, comics, games, etc. Even if you disallow the unaired first pilot, the sections of it that appear in “The Menagerie” certainly qualify by that standard, and for better or worse, the shot of Young Spock smiling is among them. And “The Menagerie” is a standout show, one of only two TOS episodes to win a Hugo. Certainly, no one would be producing a show about the adventures of Pike, Number One, et al if it had never existed. Not being a canonista I have no dog in this fight, but while you can argue it’s an early show and that Nimoy just took a bit of offhand direction, or that the editor of “The Menagerie” might well have chosen to include another bit of footage from “The Cage” instead if he hadn’t been so pressed for time — and in the end, it doesn’t matter. The character did what he did, and fans have been speculating as to the ‘Trek-world’ reasons why since the first fanzines appeared in the mid-‘70s. It’s no less “real” than any other moment in the show — I’ll take it any day over ‘Gorgon the Friendly Angel,’ myself — and no one gets to gatekeep over which moments in Trek should and should not be taken seriously.

Sadly that seems to be the case. But I feel like creators really should take such things into consideration. If something was done in a pilot before certain characteristics were hammered out, I don’t think it reasonable it should be considered canonical even if it aired. I realize this might open up a can of worms for fans but… Well I said it.

He was very emotional in “The Cage.” Plus, this is presumably his betrothed, T’Pring. So yeah, it is definitely who he was.

And this might well be about seven years before Amok Time …

Whoa— that looks a lot like kal-if-fee! If so, and if it’s Spock’s, then a) we must be in 2260 (7 years before “Amok Time”), and b) Chapel knew *exactly* what was going on with Spock when she brought him plomeek soup.

Looking forward to finding out!

My first instinct was it was a flashback, as we explored his past. But I think you might be right, since the timing matches up.

My guess was already that it was at least 2259, since it seems like some time passed between DSC season 2 and Pike going off to his cabin. So, 2260 would be just about right.

Part of me actually wants to see the whole pon-farr experience in all of its explicit detail. I mean after all the show is on streaming and can get away with those kind of scenes now.

But wasn’t “Amok Time” supposed to be Spock’s first-ever pon farr? He said in that episode that he’d hoped he “would be spared this.” If he’d already BEEN through it once, then he’d know he wouldn’t be spared.

The show never said it was his first, no. He simply said he’d hoped to be spared it.

I know that it wasn’t’ directly stated that “Amok Time” was his first pon farr, but I thought that was a reasonable inference from what he did say in that episode.

You are correct.

The more I think about it, the more I realize how careful they’ll have to be in showing who knows what about pon farr and T’Pring. Uhura can’t see T’Pring (she asks who she is in “Amok Time”; there has to be some reason why M’Benga doesn’t put any mention of the pon farr in Spock’s medical file (as McCoy has no idea what’s going on until he gives Spock a full physical); and Chapel is just a landmine.

I’m not saying they can’t make it work and fit with “Amok Time”, but it’s a very fine needle to thread.

It could just be handled by having Spock (and maybe one other person like Pike) go to/be at Vulcan when this happens. No emotional problems onboard the ship, no needing to reroute to Vulcan at the last minute, so no one else needs to know. Then Spock, having completed the “rituals”, returns to the ship – perhaps then expecting that he wouldn’t face them again in 7 years.

Seems like it is a fairly wide needle to thread, no need to narrow it unnecessarily without additional information.

That’s reasonable — except for the shot that appears to show Spock and T’Pring in his quarters on the Enterprise. Which narrows the needle.

Didn’t Spock also say that he hadn’t seen her since he was 7?

No. He said they were betrothed at seven.

But while they’re traveling to Vulcan, we see him looking at a picture of her on his monitor, and she’s a child in that picture, which suggests that he hasn’t seen her since she’s grown up.

No, not directly stated. But strongly implied.

That is the only bit of evidence to suggest this was his first T’Pring related Pon Far. However, I would think he has gone through it before because, 7 year cycle.

Exactly. If Vulcans go through it “every seven years of their adult life,” then Spock HAS to have gone through it before “Amok Time.”

Perhaps it’s actually not Spocks pon farr , but another ones an he just is there – perhaps a vulcan lady of his past, he did like is involved ….. and he returns to vulcan to take part …. stand by the side of her …. or by the side of a friend …. or because his mother wished him doing so …. and suddenly the vulcan lady chooses kalifee and Spock is involved … and then ….

OK, been “watching” (see what I did there) this site it’s inception (how long is that now? 14, 15 years?) First ever post. For the love of all things holy or otherwise, PLEASE incorporate the “fight music” from Amok Time during what appears to be Kal-if-fee. How nostalgic seeing Spock with lirpa in hand. Fingers crossed they find the right balance in this show!

Thanks for coming in from the cold. From another TrekMovie guy since the beginning. I too have a lot of hope for this show!

I am loving that we are seeing so much of the entire crew, not just Spock and Pike. This tells me we’re finally getting a full ensemble. And so many scenes in corridors, quarters, and other rooms, i’m hopeful this will be a show with smaller stakes, more emotionally resonant stories.

While i’d love it if it was less action, I can live with some big action if it also has that other stuff.

Yes, I think this show is focused on the right things too. Picard season 1 did a good job balancing the characters. Pretty much each one got their own solid introduction and then a “focus” episode later that gave us more about them. Hopefully SNW can continue and improve upon this, while at the same time avoiding the poor plotting of PIC S1, and avoiding the rushed “character building” of DIS (e.g., “meet Airiam in-depth for the first time, oops now she’s dead”).

I will say how odd it is that Picard seems like so much more of an ensemble than say, Discovery, considering the show’s title.

I don’t want to sound mean but, given Stewart’s age, Picard needs these other characters around him to do the work. The show wants to incorporate action. Stewart is still in good shape but he not going to run around or get into fistfights.

We get more than enough “emotional resonance” from Discovery! LMAO. This show should be about ideas and exploration, not another soap opera. I’m liking what I’m seeing so far. And, yes, I like an ensemble feel. That’s the one way that the JJ-verse movies are superior to TOS: everyone in the crew is involved in problem solving.

The visuals in this show, really incredible. The show does sound like it’s having quite a bit of fun with their characters, something TOS was good at but might come off as too contemporaneous or casual. Hoping they find the right balance. 🤞🏻

At least they are getting a lot of the other sets right. All that Vulcan stuff seems to meld right into what we got on TOS.

And I’m forced to admit I liked this one quite a bit. It was pretty obvious that in the Star Fleet Spock found himself and came to terms with himself.

As a side note, beyond his portrayal of Spock…it’s absolutely creepy how much Ethan Peck resembles and sounds like his grandfather.

It’s called genetics. Nothing creepy about it.

Plenty of people don’t resemble and sound like their grandparents as strongly as Ethan Peck.

No need to be a bellend.

I look a lot like my maternal grandfather (1888-1980). People see photos of him in 1910 and ask where did I dress up and pose in old-time clothes. :-)

Who is his grandfather?

Gregory Peck.

Maybe his full name is Ethan Peck Soong. :-)

THIS is the character I want most to see and have the most invested in. The stakes are so high for this one. Will they extend Spock’s story in interesting and meaningful ways while being true to the character, or will they ruin him? So far, it looks promising!

I’m impressed at how well Ethan Peck has picked up the rhythms of Leonard Nimoy’s voicing of Spock. I’m hoping that bodes well for the future!

Did you see how elaborate and detailed those lirpas were? Poor TOS could only DREAM of the kind of budget this show has!

They didn’t need to concern themselves or even consider it back then.

Right, 1960s TVs couldn’t show that kind of detail. That’s also why Jeffries’ Enterprise model was so smooth. He wanted it to have subtle textures and details, but to get it to show up on TV would have meant exaggerating it too much for his tastes. When he was brought in to make a new model for Phase II, he added those details (which Minor & Co. picked up on when it transitioned to TMP).

Even he doesn’t know his first name.

Honestly, I wish they just hadn’t bothered. I was just fine with what I saw of the original, and best, crew. I don’t need this. I’m surprised that anyone does.

To each their own.

“Spock” is Spock’s personal name. Amanda says in “Journey to Babel” that it’s the Vulcan FAMILY name that’s unpronounceable by humans. Notice that his mother and father both call him “Spock.”

“  I’m surprised that anyone does.”

Oh you’re one of them.

Love it! Only good thing DIS has ever done in it’s 4 seasons is get us this spin off!

When Spock is in his quarters we see the TOS intercom speaker on his desk, along with a TOS computer. I love these little TOS touches.

Looking at his sleeves, he’s a commander now (or maybe LT Commander, hard to see).

he is a lt currently both the production team and the actor said as much he may be promoted to lt commander by the end of the season or ever next season

We look forward to seeing Spock’s journey from Pike to Kirk.

Like it but what’s up with the new monochrome red bridge graphics? Too many people liked the big E in Discovery with all the Color and visual stimulation versus their other garbage sets that they had to quash it with red graphics? Too many fans liked it? Why break what was fixed? They think they don’t have Color monitors in the 23rd century?? Was hoping was the ship at red alert but now looking they let someone probably from Picard wreck the set.

The Enterprise in The Cage was mostly gray; Jerry Finneman added the color splashes and brightness for TOS.

I am pretty sure the computer screens were all full color blinking lights, but now you have me intrigued! I will have to watch the Cage / The Menagerie again! I know the bridge was grey but weren’t the pictures and displays (supposed to be monitors) in color?

Did Spock feel fully accepted in TOS, or was there tension there that was part of the character and sometimes part of the storylines?

Perhaps he felt fully accepted but he still seemed to have a personal struggle that I think just being around both McCoy and Kirk might have helped him with. But I don’t think he fully purged his personal conflicts until after the V’Ger incident.

There was definitely tension. Look at “The Galileo Seven” with the shuttle crew second-guessing Spock or “Balance of Terror” where Spock is suspected of being a Romulan sympathizer.

Wow, wow, wow! The visuals are breathtaking! Why do the television shows look better than the JJ-verse films? PS:Ethan Peck is so much better than Quinto!

Very nice promo! :)

I just already find the dialog cringy. “You do a lot of counting down” – eye rollllll. Is that a joke? “I am quite simply Spock.” What is this, a college application essay? The writing of Kurtzman Trek is the consistent disappointment across the series – cheesy dialog that feels like it’s trying so hard to be entertaining. Why can’t the crew solving problems in itself be entertaining? When I think of classic TOS episodes like Menagerie, Balance of Terror, there was none of this contemporary jokey, quippy, snappy dialog trying to be funny. It was professional adults addressing serious situations seriously, and whatever humor there was arose naturally out of the interactions between characters who knew each other. It wasn’t some, oh let’s insert a joke here for a moment of levity because even though we’re officers we sometimes act like buffoons because *entertainment*. I sure hope these trailers aren’t indicative of the quality we’ll be getting. The cringe factor in Discovery is exactly why I can’t watch that show. I’d like for once to be able to enjoy a current Star Trek show.

I think its just a way for the new shows to be more hip or wanting to appeal more to the younger tik-tok generation who like those kind of “cringy” jokes. The older shows used to have a bit more theatricality and literacy in their writings, the new ones just want to adapt themselves to the times, which is understandable if you want to get new fans. We may not like, but if this makes the shows more accessible to the newer generation then so be it.

Possibly but, in the end, Star Trek has never been hip. I think it came closest to being hip in 1986 with “The Voyage Home” by managing to pull something off that no Star Trek series or film has managed to do since 1986: appeal to fans and casual audiences alike.

Star Trek still isn’t expanding its reach beyond Star Trek fans. We’re just feeding off of each other.

I think it’s because the writers are incompetent, full stop. This dialog sounds so unnatural to the ears. There’s one dialog exchange in the Disco season 2 premiere that is so disgustingly bad and poorly delivered that I had to just pause there. I can’t be the only one irritated by it, and the fact is that the tiktok generation isn’t watching Star Trek at all – they’re watching tiktok.

Let’s wait and see. I think, I hope, Anson really pushed for the same.

Debate is a time-honored tradition for Star Trek fans. Was Janeway right about Tuvix ? (Yes.) Is Star Trek: Discovery ruining the franchise with all that crying ? (No, it’s great; get in touch with your feelings.) Who’s the best captain in Starfleet? (The greatest captain is Picard . But the best captain is Sisko .)

What’s not debatable is that Spock is the most important person in the history of the Federation. A mixed-species science officer turned diplomat turned timeline traveler, Spock’s impact boasts an unrivaled longevity within the Star Trek franchise, born from a combination of dramatic necessity and fan appeasement.

And it’s a good thing he’s stuck around, because Star Trek is finally ready for him. Beleaguered as Star Trek: Discovery ’s journey has been from first season to final , it has shepherded the franchise into a new stage of Star Trek’s endless stumble toward utopia . And Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has shown that Star Trek can at long last allow its most famous alien crewmember to be just as relatable as his human colleagues.

The Great Spock

Spock in Star Trek (2009)

“The Great Spock” is how Spock is known within the Federation just a decade after his death, and for good reason. He was a foster brother to Captain Michael Burnham, who would reunite the Federation in the far future. He was second-in-command to the legendary Kirk, and instrumental to ending the cold war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire and reunifying Vulcan and Romulus. And then, in the Kelvin timeline, he ensured the success of Kirk’s enterprise in a whole ’nother universe .

And while this extravagant series of canon events is the fault of decades of Star Trek writers and directors working in tandem, you can’t really blame them. For one thing, Leonard Nimoy inarguably had the range, in a way that set him apart from most of the original cast of the original Star Trek .

This is not a slam on the rest of the TOS cast. The world of midcentury cinematic sci-fi was by necessity one of broad emotion, wide eyes, and huge physical gestures. An earnest dramatic bombast that filled the gap between plywood sets, body paint, acres of lamé, trick camera work, and crude latex masks and the audience’s immersion.

But starting almost immediately upon TOS ’ cancellation in 1969, the tone of sci-fi cinema and television evolved like Tom Paris at warp 10 (that is, it quickly became almost unrecognizable ). Boundary-pushing films like 2001: A Space Odyssey , along with adventures like Star Wars and full-blown dramatic horror like Alien , conditioned audiences to expect more subtlety and immersion from the genre (William Shatner and Ricardo Montalbán’s scenery chewing in Wrath of Khan notwithstanding).

By the time Star Trek returned to television with 1987’s The Next Generation , it was an arena for a different kind of actor entirely, one fitted to the quieter, more humanistic emoting expected from modern dramatic television. It’s a testament to Nimoy’s range, not an insult to his peers, to say that he was one of the only members of The Original Series who could hold up their own end in scenes with, say, Patrick Stewart, in a Next Generation episode where Spock mind melds with Picard to experience his late father’s hidden feelings of love for his son. If there’s another actor with Nimoy’s range in TOS , it’d be DeForest Kelley (who even guest starred in the pilot of The Next Generation ). But Bones is… I mean, there’s no such thing as a “Doctor’s Salute.” Spock is the mascot of Star Trek. And if you doubt it, you just have to look at every time since The Next Generation that the franchise has taken a big risk.

When 2009’s Star Trek needed someone to hold down a new cast playing old characters in a significant departure from The Original Series ’ story and tone, it turned to Nimoy and Spock. And when Star Trek: Discovery placed itself in an era nearly contemporary with Kirk’s Enterprise, it was with a tantalizing reveal of Spock’s secret foster sister, and, after a rocky first season, a recast Spock himself, proving that the character’s effect now stands independent of Nimoy’s contributions: Tossing Spock into a story has become Star Trek’s go-to way to say, “Hey… don’t worry… we’re still Star Trek!”

But something else happened in this long process of Star Trek reinventing itself. It grew from a metaphor about embracing the other to a metaphor about being the other. Spock was the most important person in Starfleet, and Star Trek finally figured out that his personhood is important.

The original alien

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Spock’s struggle with his combined human and Vulcan heritage has been the central tension of his character since Trek’s inception. But The Original Series placed the emphasis firmly on the alien. TOS Spock’s most iconic moments are things like the calm, utterly Vulcan way in which he sacrifices his life in Wrath of Khan , the unexpected brilliance of his smile when he realizes Kirk is alive at the end of “Amok Time,” and a whole episode where we find out that he must have sex with a specific person in the next week or he will literally die.

That he was more alien than human was the whole point. Spock provided a fictional culture clash to contrast against Star Trek’s transgressive lack of real culture clash — an American television series made in the mid-1960s in which men and women, white, Black, Japanese, and Russian people cheerfully cohabitated and co-worked. Spock is Star Trek’s original embraced (or tolerated) alien other.

No matter what kind of eyes you think Kirk is giving his lanky, loyal first officer, Spock was shown through an outside point of view. This continued as Spock was refitted as a legitimizing force, as main characters like Jean-Luc Picard, Zachary Quinto’s younger Kelvinverse Spock, and Michael Burnham had to prove themselves worthy to stand in his shadow. It didn’t stop him from becoming a point of identification for generations of fans — from the moment he showed his pointy ears, Jewish fans, female fans, queer fans, biracial fans, neurodivergent fans, and many more besides have identified with Spock in spite of his positioning as the strange alien on a crew full of humans. But with Strange New Worlds , Star Trek has finally shown that it’s ready to remove “in spite of” from the equation.

From Spock’s first scene in the show — set in a Vulcan restaurant full of Vulcans on the planet Vulcan — Strange New Worlds has been committed to presenting even his alien aspects from within rather than without. The show’s first Spock feature episode, “Spock Amok,” dips directly into his internal insecurities about his most intimate relationship; next, in “The Serene Squall,” it points out that his struggle with his seemingly binary identity is emphatically not singular. The show as a whole has offered tremendous and repeated insight into Spock’s loving but doomed betrothal to T’Pring, a character TOS introduced as an aggrieved ex who forces him to take part in a traditional alien death match against his best friend.

Gia Sandhu as T’Pring and Ethan Peck as Spock sit on cushions on either side of a small low table in a restaurant on Vulcan in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

And in just this season alone, we’ve seen Spock sweat through a meeting with his intolerant in-laws while turning to his understanding human crewmates for help. In “Subspace Rhapsody,” Spock basically says the whole point out loud, when Uhura attempts to console him after Nurse Chapel pretty much broke up with him via an elaborate musical dance number.

“Relationships can be difficult, Spock. And you’re Vulcan —” she begins, clearly about to say “ she’s human.” An implication that their relationship was destined to be even more difficult than usual.

Spock cuts her off. “But I am also human,” he says bluntly. Left unsaid: I am human, just like Chapel . And just like you. Spock and Chapel — and the rest of the crew — are more alike than they are different.

Even in a scene as momentous as his first meeting with James Kirk, Strange New Worlds roots Spock in his own environment, among his own crew. Kirk is the odd one out on this Enterprise. Star Trek has come full circle on a journey of small steps, taken with Spock, and Worf and Data, and the Doctor and Seven of Nine, and Odo and Quark, and Saru, the first nonhuman character to captain a Star Trek series’ crew. Each step brought the franchise to a place where it could more perfectly voice the message of tolerance at its heart.

Star Trek has an old habit, only recently and finally discarded by the modern franchise, of playing light humor out of its crew’s diversity. Did you know that Betazed weddings are performed in the nude? Ho ho ho, better hit the gym, Captain . Did you know Klingons eat live worms? And Commander Riker actually likes it? Yech! Just like everything else about Star Trek’s aliens, it dates back to the original one, the franchise’s mascot. Peel the latex and lamé away from Dr. McCoy’s undying quest to catch Mr. Spock in a moment of open emotion, anathema to his way of life, and you might start wondering where Starfleet’s HR department is. That kind of thing is relatable when you’ve been the odd one out, but not from McCoy’s side.

Generation after generation, Trek fans have pointed at alien characters that were created to represent a clashing perspective with the human majority around them and said, “Their othered experience is like my human one.” The whole point of the franchise is that outsiders should be embraced, and Star Trek has finally evolved enough to stop framing them from the view of the inside. To let us see ourselves in aliens not in spite of original intention, but because of it.

In 1966, Leonard Nimoy was Spock. Sixty years later, Star Trek has finally put the audience in his shoes on purpose — today, Spock is all of us.

Premise [ ]

The official announcement stated that "the series will follow Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock, and Number One in the decade before Captain Kirk boarded the USS Enterprise , as they explore new worlds around the galaxy." [1]

Executive Producer and Co-creator Akiva Goldsman told Variety , " We're going to try to harken back to some classical 'Trek' values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic. Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you've seen in either Discovery or Picard . ... I imagine it to be closer to The Original Series than even DS9 . We can really tell closed-ended stories. We can find ourselves in episodes that are tonally of a piece. " [2]

When talking to Deadline on 16 August 2020 Co-executive Producer Alex Kurtzman elaborated, " I think Strange New Worlds , under the guidance of [showrunners] Henry Myers and Akiva Goldsman, it's going to be a return in a way to TOS [ Star Trek: The Original Series ] . We are going to do stand-alone episodes. There will be emotional serialization. There will be two-parters. There will be larger plot arcs. But it really is back to the model of alien-of-the-week, planet-of-the-week, challenge-on-the-ship-of-the-week. With these characters pre-Kirk's Enterprise ... I think what people responded so much to in all three characters is this kind of relentless optimism that they have. And that they are at the young phase of their careers. " [3]

Production history [ ]

When the news of showrunner Alex Kurtzman 's five-year Star Trek development deal with CBS All Access was announced on 19 June 2018, a show dealing with Christopher Pike, Spock, and the USS Enterprise was not considered for inclusion in any Star Trek line-up. [7]

Star Trek: The Original Series characters, Christopher Pike , Number One , and Spock , were introduced for season two of Discovery and were signed only for that season. [8] [9] It prompted Anson Mount to quip with a "#WillActForFood" hashtag on his Twitter account, making it known that he and Spock performer Ethan Peck were on the job market again shortly after live-action production on season two had wrapped. [10] Following the positive reception to the second season of Star Trek: Discovery , fans circulated a petition in support more appearances of Mount as Captain Pike and Peck as Spock, including the idea of a full new series. [11] Mount expressed support for the fan petition, stating he felt "humbled and deeply touched by this amount of love" in an 14 April 2019 Facebook entry. [12] [13] Peck also expressed interest in returning to the role of Spock. [14]

Mount, Romijn, and Peck reprised their roles in three late 2019 season two episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks .

Inception [ ]

In January 2020, Kurtzman confirmed he and Akiva Goldsman were having "active conversations" about a new series involving the crew of the Enterprise . [15]

On 15 May 2020, CBS announced a new series "based on the years Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the USS Enterprise ." [16] The announcement included that Strange New Worlds would feature Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One, all reprising their roles from the second season of Star Trek: Discovery .

Development [ ]

TRR : " Hide and Seek " presented " The Cage " as the pilot to this series, as opposed to Star Trek: The Original Series .

Prior to its premiere, Paramount+ specifically suggested that viewers could prepare for the launch of the new series by checking out the following DIS Season 2 episodes:

  • Episode 1 - " Brother "
  • Episode 8 - " If Memory Serves "
  • Episode 12 - " Through the Valley of Shadows "
  • Episode 14 - " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 "

StarTrek.com presented its own list of episodes to watch before the premiere. In addition to the aforementioned Discovery episode "Through the Valley of Shadows", this list of original series episodes served more as a primer for familiarizing or refamiliarizing viewers with the series' cast:

  • " The Menagerie, Part I "+" The Menagerie, Part II "
  • " Space Seed "
  • " Journey to Babel "
  • " Mirror, Mirror "
  • " The Deadly Years "
  • " A Private Little War "

In March 2021 , Eaglemoss/Hero Collector 's Star Trek Universe: The Official Starships Collection premiered at retail. A new starship miniatures partwork and product line, it would have featured Strange New Worlds starships, combined with ships from Star Trek: Discovery (after the release of issue 33 of the DIS partwork ) and Star Trek: Picard . The line's manager indicated that CGI assets of SNW's starships had not yet been received from the show's producers, as of February 2021, which was not that surprising as actual production on the new series had yet to start at that point in time. [17]

Eaglemoss' bankruptcy on 5 August 2022 thwarted all intents to release Strange New Worlds starships and none were, save one. Replicas of Pike's USS Enterprise though, had previously been produced by the company as part of the Discovery partwork collection, as it had already debuted in that series.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks

“ Star Trek : Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “ Star Trek: Lower Decks ,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.

Popular on Variety

“Lower Decks” charted brand new territory for “Star Trek” when it debuted in 2020, as both an animated comedy and a series that focused on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Set in the years following the feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series has included voice cameos from many beloved “Star Trek” alumni, like George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Given its premise, concluding “Lower Decks” make sense considering the main four characters all received promotions in Season 4. But in a message to fans, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan left the turbolift doors open for continuing the characters’ stories following their time at the bottom of the Starfleet pecking order.

The “Star Trek” TV universe, overseen by Kurtzman through his Secret Hideout production company and produced by CBS Studios, has enjoyed a robust expansion since “Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017. Along with “Strange New Worlds,” the made-for-television movie “Star Trek: Section 31” recently concluded production with star Michelle Yeoh, and the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting later this year.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to continue to build the Star Trek universe, and we’re so grateful to Secret Hideout and our immensely talented casts and producers,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of Programming at Paramount+. “‘Strange New Worlds’ has found the perfect blend of action, adventure and humor. Similarly, ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.”

“‘Lower Decks’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ are integral to the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds,” said CBS Studios president David Stapf. “We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago. We are so grateful to work with Secret Hideout, Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and the cast, crews and artists who craft these important and entertaining stories for fans around the world.”

Star trek: strange new worlds season 4 needs another lower decks crossover.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 is confirmed and the best chance to see Star Trek: Lower Decks when the animated show ends with season 5.

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 needs to have another crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks.
  • More opportunities for the casts to meet include Lt. Spock meeting fellow Vulcan Lt. T'Lyn.
  • Strange New Worlds season 4 is the best chance to see the Lower Decks cast again in a further mix of animation and live-action.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 needs another crossover episode with Star Trek: Lower Decks . Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 7, “Those Old Scientists, ” saw Lower Deckers Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) time travel to encounter Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the USS Enterprise crew in the 23rd century. The exciting and emotionally resonant Star Trek crossover was lauded by fans of both shows and provided important character and narrative development.

The renewal of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for season 4, alongside the news that Star Trek: Lower Decks will not be renewed after season 5, is a bittersweet reality check for fans but may also present an opportunity to capitalize on the success of the first crossover between these two shows with another one in Strange New Worlds ’ season 4. The growing prominence and influence of Tawny Newsome over Star Trek’ s modern shows and Strange New Worlds showrunners’ interest in further collaboration suggests that another crossover may be a possibility .

Tawny Newsome is a writer on Paramount+'s upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series as well as voicing Mariner on Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Tompkins) showing Dr. Joseph M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) the finer points of food-metaphor psychiatry. The dynamic between characters like Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Lt. Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore), and Dr. T’Ana (Gillian Vigman) could also create engaging storylines, allowing options for additional animation. With the success of the first Strange New Worlds crossover and both shows’ strong fan base, another joint-venture episode in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ’ season 4 seems a natural progression , continues important character developments, and, most importantly, allows for a continuation of Star Trek: Lower Decks .

Strange New Worlds Season 4 Is The Best Chance To See Lower Decks Again

Strange new worlds can bring the enterprise and cerritos crews back together..

When Star Trek: Prodigy was canceled by Paramount+, an online fan campaign successfully saved the show, with Netflix acquiring it for a second season. This suggests a similar option exists for Star Trek: Lower Decks to continue with a new streaming provider. However, with Lower Decks having already completed a five-season run and fans not responding with the same umbrage and passion that saved Star Trek: Prodigy from cancelation, the likelihood of this happening remains uncertain. Nevertheless, there are still avenues – and interest – for the USS Cerritos crew to embark on new adventures.

Star Trek: The Next Generation icon and Commander William Riker actor Jonathan Frakes directed the Strange New Worlds & Lower Decks crossover episode, "Those Old Scientists."

A second crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds offers the most promising chance to see Lower Decks again after it ends with season 5. Given how well-received Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 7 , “Those Old Scientists" was, there is scope and precedent for further development of this collaboration. Strange New Worlds season 4 presents the best chance for Star Trek: Lower Decks to make a triumphant return . Both Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks' diverse creativity and genre-blending offer numerous possibilities for an engaging and innovative second crossover, including the potential for a multiple-episode story arc.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks are available to stream on Paramount+.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Renewed For Season 4 At Paramount+

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for Season 4 at Paramount+, despite currently being in production on its third season.

On the other hand, it has been revealed that the animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks , will end with Season 5 on the streaming platform. The final season will premiere this fall.

Strange New Worlds centers around Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is the USS Enterprise commander at this point in the Star Trek universe. He is joined by younger versions of several legacy characters, including Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Kirk (Paul Wesley).

It debuted in 2022 and had an epic second season that included a musical episode and a crossover episode with Lower Decks , helping it climb aboard Nielsen’s chart of the 10 most-watched streaming original series over multiple weeks.

“On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Strange New Worlds,’ we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together,” said executive producers and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, along with executive producer Alex Kurtzman in a statement according to Variety . “We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure.”

Lower Decks is set in the years following the feature film Star Trek: Nemesis and centers around the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner ( Tawny Newsome ), Brad Boimler ( Jack Quaid ), D’Vana Tendi ( Noël Wells ) and Sam Rutherford ( Eugene Cordero ).

The series also featured voice cameos from several Star Trek alumni including George Takei , Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor, and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Although some aspects of the storyline make it appropriate to conclude the show, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan are leaving the hull open for future iterations.

“We remain hopeful that even beyond Season 5, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures,” they said in a message to fans. “While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true.”

Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is slated to premiere in 2025.
