Food and Beverage Establishment Grant

April 8 eclipse: What you can expect in Zanesville and around the state

Z ANESVILLE − A total solar eclipse will occur April 8 in Ohio, when the moon blocks the sun from our view. This is called totality.

During the eclipse, the Zanesville Astronomy Club coordinators John Bolen and Irene Baron will have safe solar-viewing telescopes open to the public from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 8 at the Lewis Observatory on the Ohio University Zanesville Campus. Totality in this latitude of Ohio will be 3:08-3:12 p.m.

The prime Ohio counties where you will see totality throughout the county are Auglaize, Darke, Erie, Hardin, Lorain, Seneca and Shelby. The time of the eclipse varies with locality. West of Columbus, the leading edge of the moon first touches the sun at 1:55 p.m. The total solar eclipse begins at 3:08 p.m. and ends at 3:12 p.m. The moon leaves the sun at 4:27 p.m. A city with a long totality is Marion with the totality beginning at 3:11 p.m. and lasting more than 3.5 minutes.

To see totality, viewers must be in the 115-mile-wide shadow of the moon as it moves through Ohio. This shadow does not extend to Zanesville, where residents will see only 98.3% of the sun blocked from view. Since the next total solar eclipse in Ohio won't be until 2099, plan to see this one if you can.

To protect eyes, no one should look at the sun without a special-purpose solar filter. Safe sun-viewing lenses will state, “Conforms to and meets the requirements of ISO 12312-2.”

Only during totality, when the sun is completely blocked by the moon, may viewers safely look at the sun without protection to see the sun’s outer layer, the corona. Viewers are told to not look at the sun through a camera, telescope, binoculars or any other optical device while using eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer as the concentrated solar rays of light will cause serious eye injury and/or blindness. Always inspect your eclipse glasses or handheld viewer before use. If torn, scratched or otherwise damaged, discard the device. Always supervise children using solar viewers.

Eclipse will bring out citizens scientists

There will be many opportunities during the eclipse to be more aware of your surroundings.

Annika Moore of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce suggests you find a “space where you have nature around you, a field with trees and bushes around the perimeter, a yard with some trees and bushes by a lake” where you can see the sun. Such surroundings expose you to more animals in nature.

It is suggested you be aware of temperature variations before, during and after the eclipse as the amount of sunshine varies. Be aware of changes in winds and humidity. Listen to animal sounds around you. As the sun dims, animals become alarmed. Day animals may go to roost or night dwellings. Night animals may emerge.

Most audible changes appear with birds. During totality, they become as quiet as the other animals. Noticeable is the call frequencies of crickets and katydids. Field and tree crickets increase their calls as the sun dims. Some persons report no animal is naturally moving about during totality. Even honey bees return to their hives. If you see any orb-weaving spiders, you will see them take down their web during totality and replace it when sunlight returns.

Travel challenges expected on April 8

Ohio residents will find an influx of visitors from other states and nations for the solar eclipse. To prepare for the situation, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been working with Ohio emergency agencies since 2021.

People will arrive at different times to watch the eclipse, but most will leave when totality is finished. This might create massive traffic jams. Since heavy slow traffic will impede emergency vehicles, county agencies plan to have such vehicles spread throughout the county for availability. Highway shoulder areas must remain clear as they will be used by emergency vehicles. Have your emergency roadside kit with you.

If you can, plan to stay overnight at the eclipse location and you won’t be stuck in heavy departing traffic. If you know someone that lives in a county that will experience totality at every point, ask them if you can park in front of their home.

Persons traveling great distances to eclipse sites will find traffic at a standstill after totality that may add hours to travel time returning home. Recommendations include having extra water, food and cash. You will appreciate having folding chairs and blankets. Ensure the car has a full tank of gas. Since provided restrooms may run out of toilet paper, have some with you along with toiletries and needed medicines. Have plenty of food and snacks.

There will be heavy use of cell phones. Systems may be overloaded and your phone may not work. Let family and friends know your location.
