2017 Rittenhouse Star Trek 50th Anniversary Trading Cards

While The Original Series has already been the subject of a 50th anniversary set , 2017 Rittenhouse Star Trek 50th Anniversary takes a broader approach with both the television and movie entities during the five decades. Hobby boxes promise two signed cards and a relic book card.

Documenting the key moments in Star Trek history for both tv and film, the 100-card base set includes a foil-etched design.

Falling two per box, collectors can find a varied timeframe of Star Trek   Autographs  in 2017 Rittenhouse Star Trek 50th Anniversary, including all captains from multiple points in the television franchise at one per case. This group of captains is led by Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard from The Next Generation and William Shatner as James T. Kirk from The Original Series.

Mixing in another hit choice, every box yields a Relic Booklet of which there are over 50 different versions to collect.

2017 Rittenhouse Star Trek 50th Anniversary also features quite a few Star Trek inserts. Heroes (1:24 packs) is a metal-based set that offers 50 of the biggest names for Trekkies. Artist Emily Tester adds her own touch with Artifex portraits (1:12 packs). This 50-card set also contains commissioned Originals (1/1).

More narrow insert coverage is found with choices such as Evolution (1:96 packs), which looks to the history of phasers and tricoders in a nine-card set. Ships of the Line  (1:96 packs) highlights the notable renditions of the U.S.S. Enterprise with nine cards. Focusing on main characters, Starfleet Captains (1:48 packs - 18 cards) touches on both the big and small screen while  Phaser Cut (1:288 packs - 10 cards) sticks solely with the tv shows on a new, high-tech design.

There are also limited  Sketch cards in 2017 Rittenhouse Star Trek 50th Anniversary. In addition, a custom album is sold separately and includes promo cards.

2006 Rittenhouse Star Trek 40th Anniversary Checklist

Rittenhouse celebrated four decades of  Star Trek over several sets and even years. 2006 Rittenhouse Star Trek 40th Anniversary trading cards don’t limit themselves to just the original series like the product that came out a few months later. Rather it covers all of the show from the first through  Enterprise .

2006 Rittenhouse Star Trek 40th Anniversary Checklist Details

The 90-card base set is all about the Captains. Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway and Archer each get 18 cards to showcase some of their adventures and triumphs.

Autographs aren’t a focal point of the chase in 2006 Rittenhouse Star Trek 40th Anniversary. Instead, it’s costume cards. A total of 40 are available in packs spanning across the various shows. They fall two per box.

The set’s binder has another exclusive costume card. Two variants were available through the Rittenhouse Rewards program.

The set’s only autographs that are in packs come in the form of autographed costume cards. The five-card checklist features some of the most popular actors in the franchise’s history including William Shatner, Scott Bakula and Jeri Ryan.

The only other autograph connected to 2006 Rittenhouse Star Trek 40th Anniversary is a Patrick Stewart Legends card that was given out as a six-case incentive.

Other Inserts

The product has no shortage of additional inserts. ArtiFEX Bridge Crew Portraits feature illustrations from artists John Czop,Douglas Shuler, Geoff Isherwood, Cynthia Cummens and Sean Pence. Although they’re not overly tough to pull at 1:10 packs, there are more than 40 cards in the full set making it something of a challenge to complete. Another ten ArtiFEX Villains Portraits are only found in UK packs. These all have art from Warren Martinek.

North American packs have an exclusive insert of their own. TV Guide Covers (1:40 packs) reprint the fronts of 17 issues from modern  Star Trek shows.

First Officers spotlight the second-in-commands from the various shows. Landing one per box, the six cards mix a die-cut design with sparkle foil.

The toughest inserts to pull are Star Trek In Motion, which fall 1:240 packs. These get their name from their lenticular style.

Each box also has one over-sized box topper. Numbered to 1900, each has artwork from a different show’s crew.

Set Composition

The 25th Anniversary set was a large 310 card set that actually came out in two releases. The cards alternate between The Original Series on black-bordered cards and The Next Generation on brown-bordered cards. Series One had 160 cards, came in a silver colored box and had wrappers with either blue lettering for TOS and Pink for TNG. Series Two had 150 cards, a black colored box and wrappers with blue text for TOS and black and pink for TNG. Series One was released at the 25th Anniversary convention in LA and then to the general public on July 8, 1991. Series II released October 21, 1991. At first glance, there seems little rhyme or reason to how the set was laid out, but various colored borders around the images on the front give an indication of what category a certain card is in.

• Purple border-actors/behind the scene info
• Orange border-general details about the series like TV credits.
• Green border-art/animation information

Wholesale price for cases at time of release was $280 for a 20 box case. Sadly, the product was “dumped”, meaning a large quantity of unsold boxes was unloaded into the secondary market at low prices, which devalued the box price and overall monetary value of the set. This card set was originally a popular one for autograph seekers as it features nice images of the main crew members. Its simple design and nice images don’t detract from the autograph. Many collectors mark this as their collection’s starting point. Compared to today’s standard, this set was simple and easy to collect. A time when putting that last common card into the binder was as awesome as it is today to find that last TOS 1-3 autograph! And lastly, for your viewing pleasure!  A Star Trek card tv ad!

• This set also was the first Trek set to come with insert/chase cards. Each Series had two holograms, Kirk and Picard and both series’ Enterprises. At the time of release, it wasn’t common to add odds to packs, so it isn’t officially know how many packs it took to get a hologram card. One website claims they are found one in every three boxes.
• Diamond Comics released an uncut sheet of cards 37, 128, 130 and 133 with a diamond watermark on the back. These cards are also seen as singles, as though they had been cut up from the sheet. The sheet was inserted into Previews Magazine, July, 1991.
• For Series II, a 3-card poly pack was produced with the same rough cut and finish look.
• Singles out of the poly pack are also available occasionally.

Misc. Items

• Impel also released a 25th Anniversary tin set. This sealed tin came with both Series One and Series Two card sets, all four holograms and a ‘bonus’ set of two cards, B1 and B2, not found in the original release. It also includes a certificate announcing it as a limited to 15,000 numbered product.
• Three 8-1/2″x11″ paper checklists that are often seen folded as they were sent From SkyBox in a standard envelope. There are multiple variations and a tracked in the Gallery and on the checklist.
• A t-shirt was also available from Impel, with card images on the front. Collectors got to select from a few different card images.
• Unknown quantities of mismatched cards exist where front and back don’t go together. For example, card #64 “Angel One” front with card #18 “The Battle” back. Also, some blank-backed cards have been reported. Though perhaps not common, it does seem to have happened often.
• Card #1 with blank back. Unknown how many exist like this or where it came from.
• Binder. Some collectors have questioned if there was a different binder for Series I and II, but Ken Baroff confirms that only one type of binder was produced.

I only got first set in a sealed box (before knowing there are two), and there are 160 cards in total there. Last two cards are checklists. 80 cards are from ST:TOS (odd numbered cards), 80 from ST:TNG (even numbered cards). I didn't get any inserted hologram cards in the sealed box, which is a bit strange... unless they are all part of second set only. Or are simply more rare.

Two series... were they each 155 cards?

I have this set and in great condition... Is it worth anything?
