How Do I Get to the Vienna State Opera?

The State Opera is located on the famous Ringstrasse in Vienna's 1st district.

The best way to get to the State Opera is from the Karlsplatz underground station, which you can take the U1, U2 and U4 to.

Alternatively, you can also take the 59A bus or the 1, 2, D, 62 or 71 tram to the Opernring station.

State Opera Cafe

Inside the State Opera is the Café Oper Wien, which it claims is “Vienna’s most musical café”.

The traditional coffee house with Viennese charm is a popular meeting place for music lovers, opera artists and visitors to the opera. With its traditional Viennese coffeehouse ambience and quickly served delicacies, the café attracts with enjoyment and cosiness, especially during the breaks in the performances.

History of the Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera was built between 1863 and 1896 as the successor to the Vienna Court Opera. It was the first house on what was then the new ring road.

The building was designed by the Viennese architects August von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. At the time, however, the building was heavily criticized by the public and was considered an architectural disaster, leading the sensitive van der Nüll to commit suicide. Just two months later, Sicardsburg died of a heart attack, meaning that both architects did not live to see the completion of the building.

Inauguration with Don Giovanni by Mozart

The State Opera was inaugurated on May 25, 1869 with a premiere of Mozart's "Don Giovanni", in which the imperial couple Franz Joseph and Sisi also took part. The opera served as the Imperial Court Theater until the end of the monarchy in 1918. 

During the National Socialist era, there were numerous performance bans and members of the house were persecuted, expelled and murdered. On March 12, 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War, the building was severely damaged by bombardment. The opera house was rebuilt from 1948 to 1955.

The Vienna State Opera has borne its current name since its glamorous reopening on November 5, 1955 with Beethoven's "Fidelio". Over the years, the Vienna State has been the scene of countless premieres and famous performances, in which stars of the opera scene regularly appear.

Today, the Vienna State Opera is one of the leading and most important opera houses in the world and a cultural landmark in Vienna.

Visiting Vienna

The Wiener Staatsoper

Ask about the world’s best opera venues and most people mention the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera House) in the same breath as Paris or New York…

The State Opera House

The front of the Staatsoper looks out onto Vienna’s Ringstraßen boulevard, but relatively wide streets and open spaces surround the other sides, too.

This standalone location gives the building a notable presence in Vienna’s city centre, like a grand diva towering above the orchestra pit. I often use it as a reference to guide people to other locations.

This presence feels entirely deserved given the Staatsoper’s status in the world of opera, invariably appearing in all sorts of top 10 lists.

A brief history

The opera house greeted its first visitors in 1869 as the Hofoper (court opera) for a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni .

Like many of Vienna’s landmarks, the building owes its existence to the removal of the city fortifications in the mid-19th century and the opening up for construction of the park-like Glacis area that kept the suburbs at bay.

Architect August von Sicardsburg (1813-1868) designed the basic Renaissance-style building, while Eduard van der Nüll (1812-1868) took care of the interior décor.

The public reaction at the time was broadly negative, and this criticism likely contributed to the untimely death of both architects before the official opening.

However, a newspaper article just days after that opening offered a robust defence of the two mens’ work, blaming Viennese pessimism and the population’s love of mockery and grumbling for the bad press. It stated (my translation):

The interior is such that the new opera house is perhaps the most beautiful theatre in Europe.

Unfortunately, the original building failed to escape the ravages of WWII, with allied bombs destroying large parts of it in 1945.

The rebuilding work took around ten years, with Beethoven’s Fidelio welcoming audiences at the reopening in 1955.

Today’s opera house looks especially fantastic at night (see the photo later in the article). The interior is, as that 19th-century writer remarked, quite gorgeous.

If you don’t attend a performance, I recommend the in-house tour that takes you through the building and out behind the surprisingly large stage. Some areas are actually fully original in their historical glory; the wonderful main staircase, for example, survived the aerial bombing intact.

Callas and Cruise

As noted earlier, the Staatsoper sits at the high table of world culture. The playing schedule varies daily, so you won”t find continuous runs of any one particular production.

Puccini’s Madame Butterfly might pine for a lost lover on Thursday, Strauss’s Salome do the dance of the seven veils on Friday, and Bottom make an ass of himself on Saturday in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream .

(Not to mention the occasional ballet thrown in for good measure: the Staatsoper opera also houses the Vienna State Ballet.)

Around 200 stagehands, vast numbers of costumes, swathes of scenery, and a whole lot of storage space combine to ensure sets can be switched in and out quickly, as required by the changing performance.

A permanent in-house ensemble also helps make such a dynamic schedule possible.

Guest performers, conductors, directors and others from the crème de la crème of the operatic universe complement the Staatsoper’s own team for selected productions.

Claudio Abbado, Luciano Pavarotti , Maria Callas, Enrico Caruso, Joan Sutherland, Anna Netrebko, Montserrat Caballé, Plácido Domingo, Gustav Mahler, José Carreras, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Riccardo Muti, and Herbert von Karajan are just some of the names who’ve worked at (or with) the Staatsoper.

It’s not just the prestigious operatic history that contributes to the opera house’s fame.

The Staatsoper hosts the world-famous Opernball (Vienna Opera Ball) in February , for example, and it even played a central role in one of the Mission Impossible films.

You can spot the building in other productions, too, like the Jack Ryan TV series , the The Recruit TV series , or the Sachertorte and The Woman in Gold movies.

So if anyone asks you what connects Callas and Cruise, you now have the answer.

Tickets & alternatives

See my advice on getting tickets , including the inexpensive option of standing space, where a night at the opera can cost little more than a morning coffee.

Incidentally, every seat and standing place inside has its own small screen displaying subtitles for the opera in question, with a choice of languages (including English and German, of course).

Aside from a ticket or tour, you have a couple of other ways to experience the joys of the building or Viennese opera in general:

• Google features the Vienna State Opera in its Arts & Culture project
• Many historical venues put on special visitor-friendly concerts featuring better-known light classical music and select operatic pieces
• Vienna has two other major opera houses: the Volksoper and the Theater an der Wien

How to get to the Staatsoper

You probably pass the Staatsoper on your travels around the city centre; it actually marks the start of my suggested walking tour of Vienna.

The building’s a short walk from the pedestrianised centre: just wander up Kärntner Straße from Stephansdom cathedral, for example. If you want accommodation close by, then here are some suggestions.

Subway: the Oper exit from Karlsplatz subway station drops you pretty much at the doorstep. Karlsplatz is on the U1, U2 and U4 subway lines. Alternatively, the very central Stephansplatz station (U1 and U3) is just up the road, too.

Tram/bus: there’s a tram stop opposite (Oper/Karlsplatz), served by the 1, 2, D, 71 and 62 trams. Or take the 2A city centre bus to Kärntner Straße.

Backstage tour at ORF

In everyday Viennese life, most roads lead past the television and radio broadcasters of Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF). Whether Eurovision Song Contest, New Year's Concert or Ski Alpin: the ORF program, with its four TV stations, often produces memorable moments, excitement, and sometimes also tears of joy. A tour behind the scenes at ORF gives you the possibility to experience Austria's largest media not only in front of TVs and radios. The guided tours through the backstage areas of the TV studios are suitable for everyone (including children) and offer all sorts of interesting information. They are held in German as well as in English or Italian on request.

Behind the musical scenes at the Ronacher

The Ronacher has a unique story to tell: burned down in 1884, twelve years after its construction, rebuilt, and used as a temporary home for the Burgtheater after the Second World War, the Ronacher has now established itself as a permanent feature on the musicals scene . Which makes a backstage tour all the more exciting, because it not only presents historical facts but also gives exciting insights into the world of the musical. The guided tour lasts about an hour and is offered in German only.

Between splendor and prestige: the Burgtheater

As Austria's national theater, the Burgtheater is not only one of the largest and oldest spoken theaters in the Europe but is also considered to be the richest repertoire theater in the world. The prestigious building, whose stairways are adorned with ceiling paintings by Gustav Klimt and Ernst Klimt, is especially impressive thanks to its splendid architecture. The guided tours of the Burgtheater also focus mainly on these areas. The backstage tours are held in German and some in English with a written summary in French, Italian, Spanish, Russian or Japanese.

A house full of music

The Musikverein , home to the annual New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic , enchants countless music fans at home on TV and on location in one of the most beautiful and acoustically brilliant concert halls in the world. This magnificent building, which was constructed based on models from Greek antiquity, is located not far from Schwarzenbergplatz in downtown Vienna. You can get an idea of the impressive architecture and unique acoustics of the Musikverein for yourself on a backstage tour from Monday to Saturday – in German and English as standard.

From ballet to Opera Ball

With almost 60 different operas and 21 ballets on around 300 days per season, the Vienna State Opera is one of the best-known opera houses in the world. A guided tour of the State Opera is an absolute must both for locals and for guests from around the world. A 40-minute tour will take you right behind the scenes of the magnificent opera building, where a total of 950 people ensure everything runs smoothly every day. The backstage guided tours are held in German, English, and Spanish – and by arrangement also in Italian, French, Russian, and Japanese. The Box Office is open 9am-7pm (Monday-Friday) and 9am-1pm on Saturdays.

The Vienna State Opera is one of the world's finest opera companies , famous for its first-class opera and ballet as well as its stunning Rennaissance architecture.

A brief history

The Staatsoper was the first major building to be constructed as part of the Ringstrasse  project. Officially opened in 1869 with a premiere by Mozart, it gained popularity over the following decades, thanks to the artistic influence of its first directors. 

Both the opera house and company suffered during the dark years of World War II: many members of the house were driven out by the Nazis, and many works were not allowed to be played; then, in 1945, the building was devastated by bombing . Ten years later, the Staatsoper reopened, restored with a new auditorium and new technologies, a symbol of the new life leased to a country that had just regained independence .

Visiting the Vienna State Opera

Learn all about the tumultuous history of the State Opera as you explore the inside of the building, thanks to guided visits that run throughout the week.

The tours take you from the foyer, which miraculously survived the 1945 bombing, up the magnificent grand staircase to the staterooms. Explore the Tea Salon, where Franz Josef would relax in the intervals, the Marble Hall, and the Gustav Mahler Hall before you reach the auditorium. Here you can admire the stage as you marvel at the sheer size of the 2,800-seater opera hall.

Opera for all budgets

Opera tickets are notoriously expensive but don't write off seeing one of the legendary performances at the Vienna State Opera. While a seat in the stalls can cost a staggering  € 150 ( US$ 162.40), if you don't mind queuing for a couple of hours before a show,  you can buy 'standing room only' tickets to watch the opera for a very accessible  € 4 ( US$ 4.30)!

What's more, on selected dates throughout April, May, June, and September, a series of opera and ballet performances are screened live outside the opera house, allowing visitors to enjoy classical entertainment in a relaxed atmosphere  for free!

Guided tours of the State Opera are run from Monday to Sunday at varying times throughout the day, usually between 10 am and 3 pm. They last around 40 minutes.
