Concert Review: A Fireball Performance from Styx at the MGM Music Hall

By Jason M. Rubin

I am happy to report that Styx 2023 is a powerhouse outfit, wielding the most exciting aspects of progressive rock with radio-friendly hooks, riffs, and rhythms that set it apart from many of its peers.

By this point in time, every classic rock band from the 1970s that is still around in one form or another has lost and replaced original members, usually to the detriment of the band’s sound and legitimacy. It’s not often that a band from that decade is more powerful and exciting in the 2020s than when it first came onto the scene. Styx is one such band.

They have lost two key founding members over the years: keyboardist, vocalist, and songwriter Dennis DeYoung, and drummer John Panozzo, whose bass-playing brother Chuck has been on and off over the years, and currently shares duties with Ricky Phillips, who joined in 2003. But each was replaced with better talent: Lawrence Gowan, a charismatic keys master who emerged during the neo-progressive rock movement of the mid-’80s with a series of solo albums that went unnoticed in America; and Todd Sucherman, one of the few rock drummers today with the technique, energy, and sheer talent to step into the shoes left empty by the death of Rush’s Neil Peart three years ago (Gavin Harrison is another). Sucherman went to Berklee for a year, then did sessions and was briefly part of Brian Wilson’s band (his wife, Taylor Mills, was a singer in the group at that time).

Gowan and Sucherman became members of Styx in 1999 and 1995, respectively. With their skill and theatricality, they help make Styx vital and relevant again. Playing a two-set (plus encore), 22-song show at MGM Music Hall on May 12, the entire band — led by longtime members Tommy Shaw and James Young, both lead guitarists — was a fireball from start to finish. Though the band has released a couple of new albums in the last few years, the setlist was wisely geared toward their classic period, with enough new songs to make it clear they are still a legitimate working band — creating decent original material with contributions from all current members — and not just one playing jukebox sets at summer music festivals.

Shaw and Young (known as JY) are as potent as ever on guitar, trading leads with skill and enthusiasm. Shaw also deftly played acoustic guitar. Though Gowan, in contrast with the dressings of progressive rock, had an arsenal of just one keyboard, he coaxed many cool sounds and impressive solos from it. That his instrument revolved on a pole was odd, but the arrangement suited his animated stage style. Sucherman, playing a large kit, did not get any solos, yet he was allowed to go crazy at the ends of a few songs, showcasing his dexterity and speed.

Vocally the band is perhaps at its most impressive. Shaw’s voice, originally a bit thin and high, is strong and sweet. Gowan’s lead vocals sounded exactly like DeYoung. JY sings some leads but mostly contributes to the tight vocal harmonies.

The crowd rabidly cheered during a number of highlight songs from the classic era, including “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights),” “The Grand Illusion,” “Crystal Ball,” “Rockin’ the Paradise,” “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man),” and “Come Sail Away.” The band’s light show was fun and flashy, never overtaking the music but setting a festive tone all its own. The two-song encore set comprised “Mr. Roboto” and “Renegade,” spotlighting Gowan and Shaw, respectively.

I last saw Styx in 1981 on the Paradise Theater tour. It was, as the album title suggested, highly theatrical. But DeYoung’s penchant for big concepts and soft ballads like “Babe” soon met with resistance from the rest of the group, which wanted to rock. Styx became less relevant to me and many other fans, and eventually went on hiatus. For years I resisted checking in to see what they were up to. I am happy to report that Styx 2023 is a powerhouse outfit, wielding the most exciting aspects of progressive rock with radio-friendly hooks, riffs, and rhythms that set it apart from many of its peers. A number of songs were sing-alongs, the knowing crowd happily shouting out each word. I’m already looking forward to their next trip to Boston.

CONCERT REVIEW: STYX Defies The Odds and Ages and Keeps Rocking In The Paradise – Pikes Peak Center, Colorado Springs (February 25th, 2023)

styx tour 2023 reviews

Some of the bands I go to see live have been part of my life soundtrack for a very long time. Styx falls into that category. I first heard 1975’s “Equinox” LP in my brother’s room when I was 8 years old. By then, I had probably heard “Lady” on the radio but it was “Suite Madame Blue,” with its progressive rock heavy ending, that really got me hooked. Although “Equinox” was the fifth studio record of the band, it was still prior to the arrival of Tommy Shaw , who in my book is what made Styx something special. The following year, an 8-track of “Crystal Ball” took up residence in our family car stereo, and with it that wonderfully melancholy title track that Tommy Shaw sang and wrote.

In the years to come I would purchase records of each of the subsequent blockbuster albums like “The Grand Illusion,” “Pieces of Eight,” “Cornerstone” and then the cassette of “Paradise Theatre.” Years later, I would replace the entire Styx catalog with CD versions. Now they’re on my phone. The point is to reveal just how enduring the music has been in my life; it’s lasted longer than three other musical formats. And while the critics never cared for Styx much, the Chicago band mostly made all the right moves for this listener, especially when they steered toward the heavier songs.

Dennis DeYoung is still not part of the touring band, and in all honesty, I see the band moving forward in a positive direction without him, though credit is rightfully due in recognizing that he wrote or co-wrote many of the band’s classic tunes. Much like there are those who will say Journey isn’t Journey without Steve Perry , there are fans who can’t accept Styx without DeYoung . But the band’s last two records, “The Mission” and “Crash of the Crown,” have earned places that rank quite high in the overall catalog. I believe it. And so does the band, apparently, because they played more songs from the newest record than any other album in the vast catalog during the two-set show in Colorado Springs Saturday night.

styx tour 2023 reviews

As one might expect, most of the “rock essentials” were also in the set list, but the fact that the band opened each of the two sets with a track from 2021’s “Crash of the Crown” is a testament to how strongly they feel about their new music. And for a band that’s been around for over 50 years, that’s pretty astounding. Most bands that have been at it this long are mostly playing the golden oldies, but Styx performed 7 songs from their latest record, and they fit in perfectly with that classic Styx sound. Perhaps more remarkably, there was no mass run for beer or the bathroom. Shaw ’s vocals on the acoustic-based “Sound the Alarm” were particularly impressive.

So about that 50 years figure…one has to acknowledge that there have been some musical chairs played during that lengthy span. For most of the show, there was only one guy on stage who can claim to be a founding member. That would be James “JY” Young , who generally was more reserved on stage than in decades past. Nevertheless, Young tapped into another gear when he fronted the rousing rocker “Miss America,” and it was strong. At age 73, and having recently lost his dear wife, Suzanne , it was not surprising that he was a bit more demure. What was surprising, however, is the spark plug energy of Tommy Shaw , who at 69 was jumping around on stage and wailing on the guitar leads like an “Angry Young Man.” His stage presence and remarkably strong vocals served to “Light Up” the crowd. Props must go out to the entire band, who vocally still can serve up incredible harmonies that were on full display on “Lady,” and “To Those.” Legend has it they are still doing it without the aid of backing vocal tracks, and that deserves extra praise. Live music, the way it should be!

styx tour 2023 reviews

The set-list was full of sing-alongs, of which the mature crowd eagerly joined in, and the band sounded surprisingly energized and tight. With Lawrence Gowan now having taken DeYoung ’s role on keyboards and vocals for more than two decades, this band has played many of these songs over and over, which could make them sound both tight and tired. But there were few signs of tired on stage, aside from the brief appearance of founding bass player Chuck Panozzo , who has maintained a very limited role with the band since declaring that he’s living with HIV. His replacement, Ricky Phillips , has been with the band for two decades now, and though he is 71 years old, you’d never believe it from watching him play. It’s a classy move that they give Chuck some stage time still.

The youngsters of the live act, drummer Todd Sucherman (who is absolutely amazing) and producer/writer “new guy” Will Evankovich , who has managed to conjure up the classic Styx sound on their last two releases, are keeping the spirit of the band running like a pair or “Renegades.”

styx tour 2023 reviews

There’s always a fear when seeing a band that has been at it as long as Styx that they will put on a show that indicates they’ve stayed too long at the party and tarnished their legacy. But Styx with Tommy Shaw at the helm has maintained a professional standard and proven themselves to be a class act. I mention the ages of JY , Tommy and Ricky because they’ve done such a good job of not coming off as guys way past their prime. Styx is still a great live act playing a strong catalog of classics while proudly featuring new music that stands up and slots in well. Not many long running acts can say that.

The band made four stops in Colorado on this run, which is more than unusual, but ticket sales have been brisk and the fan support is still there. So regardless of whatever the critics might have to say about Styx , a couple thousand fans showed their approval on their feet all night as they were thrilled to be invited to “Come Sail Away” once more. If this is the last time they come through Colorado, I’ll be happy to have witnessed that they finished on a high note. Still worth seeing after all these years.

Music and concerts | allentown fair concert review: styx, reo speedwagon deliver a rousing show on first night.

Styx performs Wednesday, Aug.30, 2023, at the Allentown Fair. (April Gamiz/The Morning Call)

It’s that time of year again where roasted corn dominates and ferris wheels illuminate the 46 acres of the Allentown Fairgrounds, hosting the annal Allentown Fair since 1889. However, on this year’s opening night, superstars REO Speedwagon and Styx shook the stands with a combined total of over three hours of unrelenting performances.

Appearing like movie silhouettes while taking their places on stage, REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin, now 72, looked almost as good as he did 40 years ago when opening with “Don’t Let Him Go” followed by the mega-hit “Take It on the Run” which were both well received by the all-age audience. A few songs later, and the entire crowd was on their feet dancing and singing upon hearing the first few opening piano notes of the fan-favorite radio ballad, “Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore.”

REO Speedwagon formed in 1967 in Champaign, Illinois and is known for its classic rock sound and commercial success in the 1980s. REO continued into the setting sun with “Golden Country,” “Time for me to Fly,” and “Ridin’ the Storm Out.” The only lasting founding member, keyboardist Neal Doughty, was also joined on stage with drummer Bryan Hitt, guitarist Dave Amato and bassist Bruce Hall. The set closed for the evening with their 1978 extended version of “Roll With the Changes” that bolstered the fans for the upcoming Styx performance.

Now that the air was alive with energy, Styx delivered the rock ‘n roll we were all waiting for, spanning for over 50 years of 39 hit singles. Opening with “In Those,” a hit off their 2021 album, “Crash of the Crown,” followed by “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) and then “Lady,” Styx brought their studio-magic straight to the stage. The band’s members, especially singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw and former member Dennis DeYoung, provided many Styx songs with themes of introspection, fantasy, and social commentary.

The band’s dynamic keyboardist and showman Lawrence Gowan took little to no time to start spinning his keys bringing vibrant stage theatrics to engage the crowd. Chuck Panozzo, the band’s founding bassist, made an appearance during the performance of “Fooling Around (The Angry Young Man),” one of my personal favorites.

This was a treat for fans as Panozzo makes more appearances with the band after fighting an illness for many years. He was replaced by Ricky Phillips, formerly of Bad English and the Babys. Drummer Todd Sucherman was excellent on the kit which I was surprised to see had a double-kick drum, but Styx is known for blending musical styles, including rock, progressive rock, pop and even elements of classical music. They are also known for its members’ musical prowess and skill which is evident in their intricate compositions and harmonies.

NIGHTCRAWLER: Allentown Fair on Wednesday | PHOTOS

“Too Much Time on My Hands,” an astounding favorite that has lasted through the decades from the album Paradise Theater, was received with a standing crowd followed by “Khedive” and then “Lost at Sea.” Newest member, guitarist Will Evankovich, and guitarist James “J.Y.” Young, also provided riveting solos and gritty vocals during the show. The last song of the set was the ever-popular 1978 former top-10 single, “Come Sail Away” where the crowd sang every lyric while lighting up the dark sky with lighters and cell phones in hand. It was one of my most appreciated songs of the night.

After 120 minutes of continual music, the crowd demanded more and Styx returned on stage for a two-song encore. Gowan started with their synthpop 1982 hit, “Mr. Roboto” leading on keys and spinning on the platform, while Shaw closed the night with the heavier sounding “Renegade.” Ending the night with such an ambitious, captivating song reminded the audience that although Styx has some of the most memorable ballads of the 1970s/80s, they are still the rock band we grew to adore and sing in our cars with, and still do after 50 years.

Guitar legend and Allman Brothers Band co-founder Dickey Betts has died at age 80. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer wrote the band's biggest hit, “Ramblin’ Man.” Manager David Spero told The Associated Press that Betts died early Thursday at his home in Osprey, Florida. He says Betts had been battling cancer for more than a year and had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Betts shared lead guitar duties with Duane Allman in the original Allman Brothers Band to help give the group its distinctive sound and create a new genre: Southern rock. Acts ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Kid Rock were influenced by the Allmans’ music, which combined blues, country, R&B and jazz with ’60s rock.

The first being 2017’s THE MISSION , their first new studio album in 14 years at the time. CRASH OF THE CROWN was written pre-pandemic and recorded during the trying times of the pandemic. It’s available as clear vinyl, black vinyl, CD on digital platforms . They released more new music on September 17, 2021, THE SAME STARDUST EP, originally sold as part of Record Store Day (June 12, 2021). Available on blue 180-gram 12-inch vinyl only, featuring two brand-new songs on side one (“The Same Stardust” and “Age of Entropia”), as well as five live performances on side two of some of Styx’s classic hits previously heard during their “Styx Fix” livestreams that kept fans company during the pandemic on their official YouTube page, including “Mr. Roboto,” “Man In The Wilderness,” “Miss America,” “Radio Silence,” and “Renegade.” It’s available worldwide on all digital platforms . The seven men comprising STYX have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide by entering their second decade of averaging over 100 shows a year, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. Styx draws from over four decades of barn burning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a STYX set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man,” from the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady” to the seething indictment of preening, primping pageantry for pageantry’s sake of “Miss America,” from an individual yearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness,” to a soul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball,” from the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away” to the grainy all-in gallop of that rugged “Renegade” who had it made, the band draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature sound. STYX hit its stride with guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s first LP with the band, 1976’s CRYSTAL BALL , and then they become the first group to score four triple-Platinum albums in a row: THE GRAND ILLUSION (1977), PIECES OF EIGHT (1978), CORNERSTONE (1979), and PARADISE THEATER (1981).

John Waite has been touring the U.S. for the past years, performing his catalog of hits from his 40-year career as a solo artist, with The Babys and Bad English. Those hits include some of the most loved songs of the ‘80s and ‘90s. The #1 worldwide hit “Missing You,” The Babys’ “Isn’t It Time” and Bad English’s “When I See You Smile” rank amongst some of his biggest international hits and are still heard on radio today.  Others include “Tears,” “Change” and “These Times Are Hard For Lovers,” while “Every Step Of The Way” and “If Anybody Had A Heart” appeared on the soundtrack to the 1986 Demi Moore film About Last Night , and “Deal for Life”–penned by Martin Page and Bernie Taupin–was featured in the Days Of Thunder soundtrack. He even reached top country charts with his duet of “Missing You” with country singer, Alison Krauss. As a solo artist and as the lead singer of The Babys and Bad English, John Waite has been a fixture of album-oriented rock radio stations throughout the decades with his talent for power ballads and driving arena rock. His latest music, WOODEN HEART ACOUSTIC ANTHOLOGY THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS VOLUMES 1 2 3 , was released in 2021 In December 2022, his documentary, John Waite — The Hard Way, was released on streaming and as a DVD and Blu-ray on Amazon and features candid interviews with Waite, which were shot during the COVID-19 shutdown. It looks at his whole career, from his years fronting The Babys, to his successful solo career, to his work with Bad English and beyond. And it includes rare archival footage and photos, as well as interviews with award-winning songwriter Diane Warren, guitarist Neil Giraldo and many others. The movie also features footage of Waite touring with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band.

Sailing Away With Styx At The Dr. Phillips Center For The Performing Arts In Orlando, Florida 01/18/23

With almost a month going by since my last show, I was starting to have withdrawals. My 1st show of 2023 had arrived and I couldn’t have asked for more. The iconic rock band Styx was in town and the top-notch Dr. Phillips Center For The Performing Arts was playing host. I’ve covered shows throughout Central Florida and one would be hard-pressed to find a classier venue. From the staff to the facilities, this is a first-rate establishment. I have seen Styx twice before, Paradise Theater and Kilroy Was Here,  but it has been a really long time. Interestingly enough, Paradise Theater celebrated its 42nd birthday earlier this week. I was really looking forward to the show and was curious to see if Styx could conjure up the sound and energy that I remember from those 80s’ shows.

styx tour 2023 reviews

Tonight’s show had sold out days ago and the evidence could be seen in the throngs of concertgoers that were streaming toward the picturesque Dr. Phillips Center. I didn’t have a lot of time to waste thanks to a minor parking snafu, but thankfully the check-in process was quick and painless. As I readied my gear at the soundboard, I was able to do a quick study of the stage, which was left uncovered. The artwork from the band’s 2021 album Crash Of The Crown served as the backdrop and it towered above a very interesting stage design. The drum kit was placed in the rear center and to its left was a rotating keyboard platform. Stairs were located at both ends and they accessed a catwalk that traversed the entire length of the stage.

Right around 8:00 pm the house lights dimmed, and it was time to kick this show off. The audience greeted the band with a jubilant ovation, and they responded with “The Fight Of Our Lives,” from the Crash Of The Crown album. At only 1:54, the 1st of my 3 allotted songs to photograph was gone in the blink of an eye. Next up was “Blue Collar Man” from the monster-hit album Pieces Of Eight . This song has what is arguably the most recognizable intro of any Styx song, and the largely seated crowd was now standing. Keyboardist/vocalist Lawrence Gowan has been with Styx since 1999 and his charisma and showmanship are stellar. Dressed in all white, his “Khedive” jacket also sported patches of Batman, Superman, The Joker and David Bowie . After seeing Tommy Shaw bring his white Gibson to life, I’m convinced he has the Fountain of Youth tucked away on their tour bus, or at the very least, a considerable-sized sample.

For the performance of “Lady,” co-founding member and bassist Chuck Panozzo was invited onstage, the 1st of his several appearances throughout the evening. I would’ve loved to have gotten a photo or 2, however my release didn’t allow it. Panozzo was welcomed warmly by the crowd, who not only recognized his musical contributions, but also the fact that he is the epitome of class. One of my favorite highlights of the night was when Shaw grabbed his acoustic guitar and sang 1977’s “Man In The Wilderness,” an epic song and a passionate performance.

Gowan took a moment to introduce the band, including “the man from Alabama,” Tommy Shaw, long-time drummer Todd Sucherman, bassist Ricky Phillips, and newest member, guitarist Will Evankovich. Gowan also pointed out that Evankovich had co-written and produced the band’s 2 most recent albums, 2017’s The Mission and 2021’s Crash Of The Crown . Gowan saved his most elaborate introduction for the prodigious and elegant guitarist, James “J.Y.” Young, referring to him as “a man, a mountain, the godfather of Styx, the cat in the hat and the master of the Stratocaster.”

styx tour 2023 reviews

As “Rockin’ The Paradise” began, someone tossed Gowan a sparkling black jacket and top hat. This was a cue to vacate his rotating perch and dance enthusiastically across the stage. The 1st set concluded with 1981’s “Too Much Time On My Hands,” and Shaw reminded the fans that the song was featured in the 1st hour of play, on the very 1st day of MTV’s inception. After a 20-minute intermission the band picked up right where they left off. The 2nd set was stacked with hits such as “Suite Madame Blue” and “Fooling Yourself.” Panozzo joined Gowan onstage and together they stood in the spotlight while Gowan sang “Lost At Sea.” At the conclusion, Gowan asked Panozzo if he thought the crowd was ready. A huge applause reverberated throughout the venue because the fans knew what was coming next. Gowan began playing the piano intro for the mega-ballad “Come Sail Away” and the capacity crowd of 2700 sang along. What followed for the next 8 minutes or so was nothing short of magical. As the tempo quickened, the stage lit up and smoke billowed throughout. Gowan stood atop his actual keyboard and then jetted up to the catwalk. This rendition was so good it could of easily been the encore, but it was not.

The stage glowed red as the 2-song encore began with the unmistakable sounds of “Mr. Roboto.” To be completely honest, it’s not my favorite song, but the band did it justice and the crowd seemed to enjoy it. The ever-popular “Renegade” was saved for last. Shaw killed the vocals on this one. I think the 1st time I ever heard this song was at the skating rink on a Friday night back around 1980 or 1981. This song withstands all tests of time and was a great choice to end a great show.

For those of you considering whether or not to check out this tour, I’ll leave you with this. Styx has been doing this for more than 50 years and the result is a well-polished, great sounding and tremendously entertaining production. I count myself as fortunate to have seen Styx when Dennis DeYoung and John Panozzo were part of the band, but I’m not exaggerating when I say that the Styx I saw tonight has not skipped a beat. The performance was invigorating and very reminiscent of the Styx of old. Do yourself a favor and grab some tickets now.

I’ve had a love for photography since I was young. Whether it was a Polaroid or a Kodak 110, I was always the kid with the camera. My love of music goes back even further. Nothing beats being at a show when those lights go down and the crowd goes nuts.

Mayo Civic Center Arena presents Styx

Review and photos by Kate Klaus

It was a very chilly March evening in Rochester, MN when Styx made a stop on their Crash of the Crown tour at the Mayo Civic Center Arena. Large rock shows of this caliber are a rare event in Rochester, and the response to this show was overwhelming, with Taylor arena filled with fans who were excited to catch this iconic band after waiting nearly a year since the weather-postponed show.

Being the Crash of the Crown tour, named after their 2021 album, it was fitting that they opened their first set with “To Those”, an energetic track from that album that perfectly captured the classic rock of the Styx from years before, but with a modern feel to it.  This high-energy tune charged the crowd, and that energy exploded as they followed into “Blue Color Man (Long Nights)”.  The crowd was on their feet, trying to match the unbounded energy of Lawrence Gowan, who glimmered with enthusiasm, charisma, and the fastest fingers on the keys up on his keyboard pedestal. As they progressed through their set, jumping between old classics including “Lady” and “Rockin’ the Paradise” to hits from Crash of the Crown, including the title track and “Our Wonderful Lives”, featuring Tommy Shaw on banjo and vocals.  Shaw’s vocals were impeccable, strong and bright for the over 2-hour, 23-song set.  Styx has so much power and dimension added from each member of the band, showcased as they played favorites like “Miss America”, “Lorelei”, and of course “Come Sail Away”.    Guitarists J.Y. Young, WillEvankovich, and of course Shaw provided beautiful vocals, flawless harmonies, and dazzling riffs. Bassist Ricky Philips delivered powerful bass lines and fun energy and interactions with the other members.  It’s very apparent that these guys not only connect well musically, but genuinely enjoy playing together and performing. Drummer Todd Sucherman was the heartbeat of the dynamic group, with intense solos throughout the night, most strikingly as the finale of the show during the encore performance of Renegade., which brought the house down to close the night.  This show was filled with classic tunes, impeccable musicality, and powerful energy that was well worth the wait for the Minnesota fans.

Styx guitarist, singer and songwriter Tommy Shaw rocks out onstage.

Styx is on a humble mission in 2023.

They’re simply trying to take over the world “one amphitheater at a time.”

And the classic rockers should be able to accomplish that goal with relative ease on their upcoming 29-concert North American Tour from January through July.

On the road, expect to hear all the classics you know and love from the rockers like “Mr. Roboto,” “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Lady” and “Too Much Time On My Hands” as well as a track or two from their 2021 album “Crash of the Crown.”

Still not sold?

Well, we should mention that ticket prices for some concerts are as low as $17 before fees on Vivid Seats at the time of publication.

We knew that would work.

So, if you want to see the unclassifiable group — are they hard rock, pop or both? — live this year, here’s everything you need to know.

Styx 2023 concert schedule

Starting Jan. 6 in Corbin, KY , Styx will work their way all over North America up until their July 15 Chippewa Falls, WI gig which closes the run.

Before that final show, the group that brought the world “Mr. Roboto” will swing into notable locales like Orlando (Jan. 18), Las Vegas (Jan. 27 through Feb. 4), Phoenix (March 9-10), Grand Prairie, TX (April 13) and Columbia, SC (April 21).

A complete Styx calendar featuring all upcoming tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

Styx current band lineup

Having been formed over 50 years ago in Chicago, IL, Styx has clearly seen a lot of turnover in the past half century since day one in 1972.

Who will you see if you catch the band live in 2023?

Great question.

These days, the group is made up of Chuck Panozzo (bass, Styx co-founder), James “J.Y.” Young (lead guitarist, original member of Styx), Tommy Shaw (co-lead vocalist, joined the group in 1975), Todd Sucherman (drummer since 1995), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocalist, keyboardist since 1999), Ricky Phillips (bass guitarist since 2003) and Will Evankovich (singer-songwriter since 2021).

While we can’t guarantee all of the above will be present at the show of your choosing, we’d put money on a variation of the core seven appearing at the concert you attend.

You can explore all things Styx on the band’s site here .

Classic rockers on tour in 2023

Even though most of these groups got their start over 50 years ago, they’re still rocking as hard as they were in a pre-Reagan world.

And while there are plenty of classic rock acts on tour in 2023, here are our five favorites you won’t want to miss live when they come to a city near you.

•  Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

•  Dead and Company

•  Billy Joel with Stevie Nicks

•  Jimmy Buffett

•  Eagles

REVIEW & PICS: Styx set sail for NJ, bringing hit after hit after hit

Photo: Ricky Phillips smiles at the crowd at the State Theatre. Photo by John Soltes.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. —  When Styx roll into town, concertgoers know they’re in for a good time. That was certainly the case when the legendary classic rockers made a stop at the State Theatre in Central Jersey. They began right on time, as so many legacy acts do, and offered the packed house hit after hit after hit. In fact, after spending a couple hours with the guys of Styx, one realizes just how many recognizable songs they have. There’s truly no filler in these set lists, only the beloved soundtrack staples of the past 50 years.

It’s hard not to gravitate to the two ends of the stage when watching / experiencing a Styx performance. On one end there’s Tommy Shaw, still powerful in voice and an ace on guitar, and on the other end is the exuberance of keyboardist and co-vocalist Lawrence Gowan. Together they make a formidable duo who bring the audience through the decades and the many albums, stretching back to the 1970s and up until their new release, Crash of the Crown.

The band seems to have a blast on stage, and there was never a paint-by-numbers feeling. These guys felt the music they were playing, and the crowd, who were mostly on their feet for the duration of the show, felt the music, too. Ricky Phillips held down centerstage on bass, while James Young blared his guitar like a pro. Chuck Panozzo even turned up for a few choice songs, while Todd Sucherman kept things speeding along on the drums.

There were numerous highlights, including “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights),” “Lady” and “Crystal Ball.” The first set of this two-set show ended with the sing-a-long “Too Much Time on My Hands,” a tune readymade for a large house of Styx fanatics. After a 20-minute intermission, which didn’t feel entirely necessary, the energy was built up again with songs like “Miss America,” “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)” and the set closer “Come Sail Away,” an epic reminiscent of “Stairway.”

The double-shot encore had the audience once again appreciating the two men on either side of the stage: Gowan, who took the lead on “Mr. Roboto,” and Shaw, who took the lead on “Renegade.”

Styx are perpetually on tour, and that’s a good thing, indeed. They need to be experienced live. Amazingly the band members have become even more skilled and more polished as the years tick by, and their numerous hits never sounded better.

Fairyland park in kansas city, us on sun, 22 jun 1975.

I remember this concert from my teen years with great delight. I wasn't there to see Climax Blues Band, and to be honest I have virtually no memory of their set. I didn't really know their work, and was most interested in seeing Styx, who put on a great show, and Bob Seger, who presumably did as well. The big surprise was Blue Öyster Cult, with whom I wasn't familiar at all. They knocked my socks off (almost literally--at one point in their set the drummer donned a gas mask, so we knew something big was coming, and there was quite a stage explosion), and soon thereafter I bought their live album, which I listened to many times in my teens. Another highlight of the BOC's set was when all of them grabbed guitars and came to the edge of the stage, making the band, for that moment, a four-electric-guitars-and-a-bass lineup, which I've never seen before or since. I consider this concert one of the most fun I've ever attended. Thanks for reminding me of it!

House of Blues - Myrtle Beach in North Myrtle Beach, US on Thu, 12 Mar 2015

Last night's Styx concert is the absolute best show I've ever been to. It was amazing! I loved it.

The show was amazing at the HOB!! I was right upfront and have seen Styx many times over the years, at different venues and in different cities. This was, however, my first time at HOB. This was my favorite Styx concert so far.The band keeps getting better every year and they put on a great show and lots of high energy.

Last night's show at House of Blues was my first experience with Styx and I must say that I'm above pleasantly surprised with the outcome! I didn't really know much of the music, but it didn't matter because their energy and spirit were contagious and I found myself enjoying the show very quickly. I'm only sorry my husband didn't get to win that guitar - that would've been the best ending to his birthday celebration this week!

THE PEACH REVIEW®

Styx will bring 2023 Tour to The Fox Theatre on Friday, June 16, with support from Edwin McCain

By The Peach Review®

styx tour 2023 reviews

Iconic rock group  Styx  has announced a unique, intimate show in Atlanta on Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Fox Theatre, with Edwin McCain set to support. Presale begins Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, and general tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 17, 2023, at 10 a.m. EST at  FoxTheatre.org  or by calling the Fox Theatre Ticket Office at 855-285-8499.

With over four decades of barn-burning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts, the show will be one to remember. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion,” to the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady”; and the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away” to the rugged “Renegade” –the band draws on unlimited ways to immerse one’s mind.

ABOUT STYX AND “CRASH OF THE CROWN”

A new era of hope, survival, and prosperity comes calling with the release of “Crash of the Crown,” STYX’s “masterpiece” latest studio album, written pre-pandemic and recorded during the trying times of the pandemic. The legendary and multi-Platinum rockers–James “JY” Young (lead vocals, guitars), Tommy Shaw (lead vocals, guitars), Chuck Panozzo (bass, vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocals, keyboards), Ricky Phillips (bass, guitar, vocals) and “Crash of the Crown” producer and co-writer Will Evankovich (guitars)–released their 17th album June 18, 2021, on the band’s label, Alpha Dog 2T/UMe, which is available as clear vinyl, black vinyl, and CD on  digital platforms  and at  Styxworld.com .

STYX’s holy mission for cutting “Crash of the Crown” was crystal-clear to its co-creator from the get-go. “Absolutely no obstacles were going to get in the way of how we approached creating this album,” singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw concludes about the herculean recording efforts of his fellow COTC makers. “Everything came out exactly the way we wanted to hear it.”

Shortly before “Crash of the Crown” came out, STYX released new music on “The Same Stardust” EP as part of Record Store Day (June 12, 2021). Available on blue 180-gram 12-inch vinyl only, featuring two brand-new songs on side one (“The Same Stardust” and “Age of Entropia”), as well as five live performances on side two of some of STYX’s classic hits previously heard during their “STYX Fix” live streams that have been keeping fans company during the pandemic on their official YouTube page, including “Mr. Roboto,” “Man In The Wilderness,” “Miss America,” “Radio Silence” and “Renegade.” On Sept. 17, 2021, “The Same Stardust” was made available worldwide on all  digital platforms .

styx tour 2023 reviews

You can expect the best of times whenever Styx is in town, and luckily the long-standing six-piece are set to spend the entire summer on the road for their 2024 Renegades and Juke Box Heroes Tour with Foreigner and special guest John Waite . Despite averaging 100 shows a year for nearly two consecutive decades running, Styx are still adding new twists to their live shows.

Following a massive world tour in 2023 and an early 2024 residency at The Venetian Theatre in Las Vegas, the hard-rocking prog group will kick off their co-headlining North American trek with Foreigner and special guest John Waite in June. Styx Concert Setlist Info

The setlist for Styx has changed drastically over the band’s five-decade career. Pulling from a song list that features eight Top 10 singles across 17 studio albums, including four triple-platinum releases, Styx have the luxury of crafting a hits-heavy performance quite easily. However, the “Renegade” band continues to push their boundaries with a 2024 setlist that gives just as much shine to their latest full-length effort, 2021’s Crash of the Crown , as their biggest, crowd-pleasing singles.

Below, you can find an average Styx setlist from their most recent 2024 shows. Check back for updated information once the band’s co-headlining Renegades and Juke Box Heroes Tour kicks off this summer.

Styx’s 2024 Tour Setlist:

CONCERT REVIEW: STYX and REO SPEEDWAGON Deliver Rocking Comfort to the Lincoln Crowd

styx tour 2023 reviews

BY PAM WHISENHUNT | Go Venue Magazine

It was a breath of old school 70s & 80s nostalgia this past Tuesday – May 10, 2022, at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska, when Styx , REO Speedwagon and George Thorogood rolled through on the Live & Unzoomed Tour .  The show was originally set for the Pinewood Bowl Theatre, but due to weather and grounds condition, it was moved to the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The show opened with a local Nebraskan duo, Tom & Wes . Tom Roth & Wes Stebbins played a simple, no frills acoustic set covering a variety of 70s favorites.

George Thorogood and the Destroyers kicked off the “Rock Party” playing a full set of Thorogood’s popular songs.  There was strong crowd participation throughout. People were singing along to favorites like “I Drink Alone” and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”.  Thorogood had diehard fans on their feet dancing.  His efforts to connect to the audience with local references were well received.  He referred to Lincoln as a “best kept secret”.

The crowd, mostly seasoned rock and rollers, continued to stroll in.  Almost everyone was settled by the time REO Speedwagon began, and it’s a good thing; they didn’t want to miss what was next. REO Speedwagon started with “Music Man” “Take It On the Run” and “Keep Pushin”. I found myself in full-on 80s sentimentality with “I Can’t Fight This Feeling”.

REO Speedwagon ’s lead vocalist, Kevin Cronin announced he was 70 years old and acknowledged he doesn’t know it all, and he’s still learning. Cronin introduced his bandmates, but most notably keyboardist Neal Doughty . A founding member in 1967, Doughty has played on every REO Speedwagon album and performed at every show.  An impressive stat by any means.

REO Speedwagon left the stage. People started leaving for intermission when moments later, the band came back for an encore.  Something I’ve never experienced before (a non-headliner doing an encore).  They wrapped up their set with “Keep On Loving You” and “Roll With The Changes”.

Styx kicked off their set with a new song “The Fight of Our Lives” and a classic “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)”. Styx played a mix of old songs including “Lady”, “Rocking the Paradise” and “Come Sail Away” mixed with music from their 2021 album Crash Of The Crown . Vocals from Lawrence Gowan (keyboardist) and Tommy Shaw (guitar) were controlled and melodic.

Gowan introduced the band members; Will Evankovich is the newest member on guitar. Ricky Phillips playing the five-string bass has been with the band for 20 years. Todd Sucherman , winner of nine Modern Drummer awards, has been drumming for Styx since 1995. Tommy Shaw on guitar with his “hair always in place”.  Lastly, when Gowan recognized James Young (guitar) and Chuck Panozzo (bass) as founding members, they received resounding applause and a standing ovation.

Styx was entertaining. They effectively engaged the audience and played with the same energy they always have.  They kept the light show classy and low-key; no pyrotechnics or strobe lights. Styx closed the show with the popular “Mr. Roboto” and “Renegade”.

Veterans of Styx & REO Speedwagon shows were happy with the performance, and newbies like myself were impressed. Fans were delighted with the top tier production, enthusiastic atmosphere and premier sound. It’s no surprise why these bands are considered rock legends.

Styx and REO Speedwagon continue their tour throughout the summer with special guest Loverboy .  You can find upcoming tour dates at styxworld.com .

The six men comprising Styx have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide. Styx draws from over four decades of barnburning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a Styx set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man,” from the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady” to the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away,” the band draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature sound.

After more than a decade together on the road, this incarnation of Styx is looking forward to performing as many shows as it can as long as it can. “It all comes back to the chemistry,” says bassist/vocalist Ricky Phillips. “The legacy of this band will be that it brought joy to millions of people,” notes drummer Todd Sucherman. Observes keyboardist/vocalist Lawrence Gowan, “We’ve always tried to explain why this is this happening. It’s obviously a multitude of factors, but the main one is that our show is really good! And if it’s really good, they’re going to come to see it again.”

Styx hopes it’s a wave that never crests. “Every night, we go on that magic carpet ride together,” observes original bassist Chuck Panozzo, who joins the band on tour as often as he can. “Music is this amazing force that comes from a higher place. I'm humbled for this band to have the great success that it has,” says co-founding guitarist/vocalist James “JY” Young. “We just want to keep on doing this,” asserts Tommy. “We want to let life take its course and let this music continue to be the soundtrack to it. And this band will continue to evolve as long as we live and play this music.”

Styx tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at any box office at The Venetian Resort or by calling 702.414.9000 or 866.641.7469.
