Outstanding tour! It was SO well organized. The emailed instructions were clear and spot on and very detailed, with great recommendations. The cost was extremely affordable. The Monoco tour was a highlight, fantastic tour guide. Had a blast and highly recommend!

Stunning French Riviera Tour

Stunning French Riviera

The hotel was in a trendy location and the hotel/airport transfers went well. It would have been nice to have spent more time in Eze and Menton. Also, the tours should have been split up so that the English speaking people were in one group and the French speaking people were in another group instead of combining them so that everything had to be said in both languages. For the most part though a nice vacation.

Provence and french riviera in depth.

Get to know Provence

Nestled between the sea and mountains, Van Gogh and Cézanne immortalized Provence’s beauty on canvas. Its striking colors range from azure sky to bright pastel facades and deep purple lavender fields to vibrant yellow sunflowers. In the summer cicadas melodically buzz in the background. Wine lovers can’t miss the powerful Côtes-du-Rhône reds and the refreshing Coteaux-d’Aix-en-Provence rosés. History buffs should make time to explore the exceptional Roman ruins and the Gothic Palais des Papes. The is a relaxing place with great weather, millennia of history, and a fantastic art legacy.

Get to know the French Riviera

Further east, the glittering French Riviera, or Cote d’Azur, is a Mediterranean paradise. The Riviera marries glamour with old-world charm. Bask in the bright sun and soak yourself superb turquoise waters. Indulge in the Rivera’s flair for luxury. Michelin-star restaurants, yacht ride, legendary nightlife, and Monaco’s Monte Carlo Casino await.  This sparkling coastline from Cassis to Menton has long drawn celebrities and the jet-set crowd.

yatch and sea in Cannes, France

Every year in May, Hollywood elites descend for the famed Cannes Film Festival. Beautiful yachts line the white sandy shore of St.Tropez. Nice is a beguiling destination blessed with natural beauty and heavy with Italian influences. By car or boat, it is easy to take a quick international detour to follow Grace Kelly’s footsteps to the opulent Principality of Monaco. With their dramatic geography and medieval charm, the perched villages like Éze and Saint-Paul-de-Vence are favorite stops for visitors.

Provence has three millennia of fascinating history to explore. Marseille, France’s oldest city, was colonized by the Greeks in 600 BC (Nice and Monaco followed soon after). The Romans conquered the region in the 1st century BC. The region’s name, derived from the Latin Provincia Romana, is a legacy of this conquest. They left behind colossal works that can still be visited today including the pristine Pont du Gard aqueduct, the antique theatre in Orange and the amphitheater in Nimes. The 14th-century Papal Schism saw the Pope decamp from Rome to Avignon where they built the imposing Gothic Palais of Papes. Though lesser-known than the Normandy beach landings, hundreds of thousands of Allied troops landed in German-occupied Provence and the French Riviera during the summer of 1944 during Operation Dragoon. In four weeks they succeeded in liberating most of southern France. Visitors can pay their respects in the Rhone American Cemetery in Draguignan.

Palais of Papes in Avignon

The border of the Mediterranean means a lot of sun and fantastic stone fruits and vegetables. Food is often lighter here, featuring olive oil, garlic, and olives rather than the creme, butter, and sauces from further north. Try tapenade (an olive and anchovy spread), ratatouille (a zucchini, eggplant, tomato, and onion-based stew), or delicious socca (a chickpea flour flatbread socca) in Nice or panisse (chickpea flour fries) in Marseille. Provence’s markets are an excellent place to sample the local food.

When to go: Most of the year is dry and sunny. Spring and Fall are lovely times to visit. The summer is popular, but it can be very hot in July and August. Marseille and Nice are worthwhile year-around. Provence host several renowned festivals in July and August. The Festival d’Aix and the Choregie d’Orange are among the world’s premier opera events. The Festival d’Avignon is the largest theater festival in Europe. The city is transformed for three weeks in July with over dozens of official and hundreds of unofficial productions. The Festival of Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles showcases great photography by old masters and creative new talents. Dozens of exhibitions are held in emblematic sites across the city.

By Train:  With the TGV high-speed train, Provence and the French Riviera have never been more accessible. The train will whisk you away from Paris to Aix-en-Provence or Marseille in about three hours. Nice is six hours from Paris.

By Plane: The main airport in Provence is the Marseille Provence airport located 20 minutes from Marseille and Aix-en-Provence. It is well-connected to major European airports. Nice Cote d’Azur is France’s busiest international airport after Paris, with over 10 million passengers. It has several direct flights from North America.

What to eat and drink:

Cheese: Southeast France’s climate lends itself better to goat cheeses rather than the cow milk cheeses that are produced in other many regions of France. Picodon and Banon are excellent examples. The famous blue Roquefort , declared by the writer Diderot to be “the king of cheese”, is only allowed to be made in caves Northwest of Montpellier.

Wine and Pastis: Southern France produces tremendous quantities of wine. Try trendy rosé wines from Côtes de Provence and the Coteaux d’Aix .

Along the southern Côtes du Rhône , Châteauneuf du Pape and Gigondas are perhaps the best-regarded, but there are scores of fantastic wines made here.

Locals love pastis , an anise-flavored spirit. It is cut with ice water to make a refreshing escape from the summer heat.

Cassis and the Calanques

Cassis is a dreamy fishing village on the Mediterranean. It’s fine dining, white wines, and colorful port are a serious draw. It is set apart by being a perfect gateway into the Calanques National Park. Extending around 15 miles (25 kilometers) west to Marseille, the Calanques are limestone inlets between Marseille and Cassis, where dramatic cliffs meet the turquoise sea forming secluded beaches. The beaches are accessible by a sporty hike or by boat from Cassis or Marseille’s Vieux Port to take in this natural wonder.

Aix-en-Provence and the Luberon

Aix-en-Provence (pronounced like the letter x) is the ancient center of Provence. It owes its elegant atmosphere to the gorgeous 17th and 18th-century mansions and omnipresent fountains that line its streets. Along the Cours Mirabeau and Vieille Ville, chic cafes and boutiques seduce passerbys. Every day visitors can see a food, flower, or antique market in the city center. Fans of the painter Paul Cézanne can visit his studio, the Atelier Cézanne, and observe the neighboring Sainte-Victoire mountain, a frequent subject of his paintings. North of Aix, the Luberon massif’s countryside and villages will seduce any visitor. The rusty red town of Roussillon, the hilltop-perched Gordes, and the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque are highlights. Come in July to admire the vast violet lavender fields in bloom.

Cote du Rhone Wine Trail

Wine has been produced for more than 2,000 years along the Rhone River between Avignon and Lyon. Today the Côte du Rhone produces some of the most famous wine in the world including France’s first appellation d’origine contrôlée Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Rhone is truly a wine lovers paradise with a remarkable landscape consisting of rolling hills and vineyards and the occasional historical village.

Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

Combine a chef, a food expert, a sommelier, trips to local markets, a cooking class and a wine tasting in one of the world's great wine regions – and what follows is an in-depth portrait of Provence.

Food and art are passions in Southern France and key ingredients for the culturally curious. An idyllic walk down lanes that inspired Cézanne in Aix, contemporary art on the grounds of a classic Provençal château, an insider tour with a van Gogh art scholar in St. Rémy, a picnic in a lavender meadow, exploring the Roman ruins of Glanum, soft landscapes changing hues in the waning sun, and a farewell at a private, family-owned winery in Châteauneuf-du-Pape... and the palette of our Provence tours becomes richer still.

A hands-on culinary experience with an Avignon chef

Shop avignon's markets with a local chef, and help prepare lunch in a hands-on cooking lesson.

In the medieval walled town of Avignon, past and present meet in a parade of sensory delights. On a culinary experience you won't soon forget, you'll accompany our chef on a buying trip to a local market, where you can see, feel, smell, and taste farm-fresh produce, freshly baked baguettes, fragrant herbs and a host of seasonal specialties. After picking up your fresh ingredients, you'll then pick up some of the chef's treasured secrets in a hands-on cooking lesson, as you help prepare a traditional meal for lunch.

Wine pairing with a sommelier in Avignon

In avignon, a professional sommelier guides you through a tasting and pairing of rhône wines.

The popes who reigned over the Roman Catholic Church in Avignon during the 14th century enjoyed not only their formidable lodgings in the fortress-like Palais des Papes, but also the fruit of the vine; they are credited with cultivating the local wine industry widely recognized today by the appellation, Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Today the life of this region still centers around growing, producing and enjoying wine – as you'll see for yourself when a professional sommelier guides you through a tasting and pairing of fine Rhône Valley wines that go perfectly with the unforgettable midday meal you helped prepare… truly an Avignon experience to remember!

In van Gogh's Provençal footsteps with an expert

Explore provençal sites where van gogh lived and painted with scholar mathilde duvilliers.

Picturesque Saint Rémy-de-Provence is forever entwined with the legacy of Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, whose paintings have immortalized such local places as Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, the asylum where he received treatment… and produced more than 150 works, including the legendary Starry Night. The van Gogh scholar Mathilde Duvilliers offers a look inside the artist's troubled mind, discussing the meanings and symbolism of his work and his letters on a tour of the asylum grounds. "I am in love with van Gogh for his talent and his sensitivity," says Mathilde. "I'll share my insights on his complicated life when we walk in his footsteps in Saint Rémy-de-Provence."

Auberge de Cassagne & Spa

Nights 5, 6 and 7

All the charm of a beautiful family home at the gate to Avignon

A former Provençal farmhouse built in 1850 on the estate belonging to Cassagne Castle, Auberge de Cassagne & Spa grew quickly from a small six-room hotel-restaurant in the 1960s to the lovely property you see today. Its restaurant was first awarded a Michelin star in 1985; it now holds five. Today, the outbuildings of the 1850 Cassagne Castle have been converted and incorporated into the farmhouse, with a beautiful park at its heart. Here, day after day, friendships and the art of small, everyday gestures are nurtured and practiced.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $449  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for mini coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing mini coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the mini coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the mini coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Certain activities on the tour will require a liability waiver signature before participation. This liability waiver will include an assumption of risk, release and indemnification by you.

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to France. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information about vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also access CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally , please contact a French embassy or consulate to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in reasonably good health. Our journeys are active adventures that may include considerable walking on uneven terrain, involve stairs and steep inclines, touring at high elevations and visiting remote areas in newly developing ecotourism destinations, frequently in warm weather. It is important that you have sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in for our walking excursions.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The south of France has a warm Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. Strong winds, known as the "mistral", can occur on the Côte d'Azur, Provence, particularly in the winter and spring. From April through October, average high temperatures in Provence range from 65 °F (18 °C) to 85 °F (29 °C) and the average low temperatures range from 55 °F (13 °C) to 75 °F (24 °C).

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, the custom is to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. Avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, although a sports jacket is not required for men.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Provence:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Optional: jacket and tie for men
  • Optional: casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes or boots that you have already broken-in and a walking stick if you use one
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of travel documents that should be secured in your hotel safe while traveling

The Perfect South of France Vacation Package

South of France Vacation Package

Are you thinking of visiting the south of France? Not only is the southern part of France packed full of beauty and history, but the food and culture are hard to beat. What is the best Perfect South of France Vacation Package to experience all this area has to offer?

Sure, you could go alone and plan your trip yourself, but you will miss sites and experiences only a local can provide. You could also choose a large tour company, but many of those are lacking personal experiences. They also negatively impact the environment with their big busses and disposable headphones. Your best option for seeing the South of France through the eyes of a local is to travel with a small group tour designed by the locals themselves.

Let Julia and Stephane, with their knowledge and expertise of the area, help you achieve your French trip of a lifetime. One of the ways Trip USA France shines above the rest is that their travel groups never exceed 14 people. Even better, they will take tours with as little as four travelers. Your tour will have the personal touch that can only be achieved with a small group. Not only will you get the opportunity to get to meet the locals but you will also be able to partake in experiences that you would not have been able to create on your own such as eating a homemade picnic in a local winery catered by Julia’s mother or enjoying dinner at a local cowboy farm!

south of france vacation package

The owners and tour guides of Trip USA France want to share with you their culture and traditions. There will be no better opportunity to immerse yourself in southern France culture than with two local tour guides who are at your cultural service. Trip USA France is committed to providing its travel guests with an unforgettable French experience.

Perhaps the best part of booking with Trip USA France is the zero stress you will feel as someone else plans your trip. No more worrying about missing must-see sights, transportation hassles, and booking complications. When you book with Trip USA France, they plan the entire vacation from hotels and most meals to transportation and admission fees. All you need to do is get to them, and they will do the rest. An additional bonus is their insider knowledge of the best and most traditional restaurants that ensure their tour guests get to experience all that France has to offer the palate.

South of france vacation package

Trip USA France offers amazing tours for anyone looking for a genuinely unforgettable south of France experience. They offer two different south of France packages that are each incredible in their own way. No matter what you hope to see on your trip to the south of France, one of their tours will be exactly what anyone looking to experience the south of France would want. 9-Day South of France Tour For the ultimate tour of the southern regions of Provence and Occitanie during the months of April, May, June, and September, consider Trip USA France’s services. Not only do they pack in tons of exciting sights and experiences, while also providing a relaxing time, but they also bring in a personal touch that no other tour company can compete with. One of their most popular events of the tour is a French picnic catered by Julia’s mother. If that doesn’t give you a firsthand experience of French cuisine and culture, nothing else will. Along with this, enjoy the Roman monuments in Arles’, the unique art venue built in quarry-Lumieres; and the beautiful city of Avignon, among many other amazing sites and experiences. 9-Day South of France: Lavender Special This tour only runs in July when the lavender fields of Provence are in their resplendent glory. This tour package is much like the standard 9-day with a lavender twist. Roam the village of Sault and take in the sweet scent of lavender and other native aromatic herbs. Make your own essential oil from lavender you pick yourself while in Sault. If you have ever wanted to see the famed lavender fields of Provence, this is the tour for you.

Custom Private Tours:

Besides there set dates itinerary Trip USA France also creates private custom tours. Let them know your budget, the number of people, your dates and your interests by filling out this quick questionnaire and they will create a vacation that you will remember for years. From luxury to low key to boutique hotels to theme tours thanks to their extensive knowledge of the Southern France and a full address book they are able to tailor tours that will match our surpass your expectations!

One thing is clear, Julia and Stephane with Trip USA France have the knowledge, expertise, and passion for offering any and every traveler looking for a south of France vacation in which they never want to leave and can’t stop thinking about for years.

Sharing is caring!

9 Stop Tour of the South of France

If you follow this 9-stop South of France tour itinerary, you will encounter some of the best stops and sights in all of Europe . The tour goes from Nice to Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Avignon, Montpellier, Rodez, Toulouse, Carcassonne (you have to double back here to take the big roads), Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and ends in Bordeaux.

If possible, it is recommended that you book a multiple-leg itinerary to allow you to fly into Nice Côte d'Azur airport and fly out of Bordeaux, as this eliminates the need to return to Nice at the end of your tour. Alternatively, this itinerary can make a great add-on to a vacation that starts and ends in Paris . With a rail pass, you can simply take the train to Nice (a pleasant way to get there and see the countryside), and return to Paris on the train back from Bordeaux.

Getting around to the various stops is pretty easy. Renting a car will give you the most flexibility of schedule, but you could certainly use a French rail pass to do this itinerary tour.

Nice is one of France's great cities and with its wonderful mix of urban and the seaside, makes a grand introduction to the tour. The city has a delightful old town, one of the best daily markets in the south of France, good art museums in and around the city and very good French (and Italian) cuisine . It's relaxed with an all-year-round events calendar including a superb Carnival , and an annual Jazz Festival. Nice makes a very good center for some excellent day trips out .

St-Paul-de-Vence

St-Paul-de-Vence is one of the most charming small fortified hilltop villages that dot the landscape of Provence . It's not to be missed, particularly for those who like Provencal fabrics, handcrafted jewelry and gifts, and good restaurants. Simone Signoret had a small house here and met her future husband Yves Montand at the famous Colombe d'Or hotel in 1949. Sit in the cafe at the Place de Gaulle and watch the pétanque players, some of whom might just remember Yves Montand trying his hand at the game. Go to the Colombe d'Or for lunch (or stay there) to see the works of art on the walls given by famous guests. But it gets overcrowded in the high season of July and August, so try to visit at another time.

Avignon is one of the most beautiful and gracious cities in the South of France. This ancient place on the banks of the Rhône river is dominated by the warm stone building of the Pope's Palace, the capital of the Catholic Church during the early Middle Ages. Surrounded by old gates and towers, it forms the heart of the old town where lovely side streets fill up with tourists and locals at the pavement cafes and boutiques.

Montpellier

Montpellier in Languedoc-Roussillon  is the true Southern France lady. Its attraction lies in its many inviting squares and their sidewalk cafes. This is a gem of the south, sitting at the border of Provence and the less popular Languedoc region. It's been a great trading port for a thousand years and was an important university town in the 1500s. This urban center has a real buzz, rivaling Toulouse for the most exciting southern city. It has a delightful Old Town, a top university which makes it a young city and a great cultural life with festivals all through the year.

Rodez is a true gem hidden away in the rural, mountainous Aveyron department. The route there and the whole surrounding area is countryside and hillsides. Then, Rodez is revealed with its small city verve. It features lovely cafes, good shopping, and beautiful architecture. That's not to mention a breathtaking, red sandstone Gothic cathedral which dominates the Old Town.

Steeped in history, yet hip and lively, the enchanting Toulouse is one of France's most beautiful cities. As an added bonus, the food here and in the rest of the Midi-Pyrénées region, for which Toulouse serves as capital, is among France's most memorable. The shopping options are vast. The extraordinary red cathedral is well worth a visit; go inside for its painted interior and its chilling scenes of hell.

Carcassonne

Carcassonne in Languedoc-Roussillon is a unique split personality of a city. The upper city is the original medieval fortified village that remains intact and atmospheric to this day. The lower city is an urban grid of shops, restaurants, and inviting squares. It's all due to its once bloody history. One of the great Cathar towns, it was split in two when the heretics were expelled and allowed to return only if they built their own city by the River Aude.

Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Easily one of the most attractive cities in the Basque Country , from its cozy beach to its attractive downtown, Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a jewel. This pretty small city in the Pyrenees  has real charm, from its port lined with colorful boats to its boutique shops selling surfing gear and lessons year-round.

Bordeaux has had such a resurgence in the last few years that it is now one of France's most dynamic and exciting cities. Its glorious waterfront buildings have been cleaned and renovated, while its latest attraction, the Cité du Vin is getting huge publicity and attendance. This thriving city is filled with shops and historic attractions. It's also the place to explore the Bordeaux wine country , try some vinotherapie (wine therapy) spas and of course, drink the famous wines.
